- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean.
- 0:12Here it is, Thursday. It's the 12th of September.
- 0:16And thank you for tapping on play.
- 0:18Thanks for inviting me into your day.
- 0:20No matter where this is that I find you, I hope you're going
- 0:23well. Whether you are being very
- 0:25active right now, whether you are not being active, whether
- 0:28you are driving somewhere where you are working, sitting at a
- 0:31desk, lying in your bed. Great to have your company.
- 0:35Thank you that we can continue reading through God's word
- 0:39together. This is such a great thing to
- 0:41do. You know, we're not going to
- 0:43talk about politics because boy, that is just a can of worms that
- 0:47no one really needs to open right now.
- 0:48But what I am aware of is that in politics and so many things
- 0:53in our lives, we just have this increasing polarity where people
- 0:59choose one side or another and find it harder and harder to
- 1:02engage with people with different ideas or views.
- 1:06So what a wonderful thing that we get to do, which is come
- 1:09together in all of our differences, but to unify this
- 1:13community through God's Word and God's word that actually
- 1:17encourages us to speak with kindness and compassion and
- 1:21inclusivity to others, sharing the good news that we have.
- 1:25So what an antidote to the way that the world is crumbling and
- 1:31cracking at the moment, that we can come and hear God's
- 1:34encouragement, that we are to be a balm of healing and a unifying
- 1:40presence. So let us be inspired.
- 1:43And that is not going to be by my words, but certainly by the
- 1:47words of our living God as we read together Second Corinthians
- 1:52chapter 8. Now I want you to know, dear
- 2:04brothers and sisters, what God in His kindness has done through
- 2:09the churches in Macedonia. They are being tested by many
- 2:13troubles, and they are very poor.
- 2:16But they are also filled with abundant joy, which is
- 2:19overflowed in rich generosity. For I can testify that they gave
- 2:25not only what they could afford, but far more.
- 2:28They did it of their own free will.
- 2:31They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in
- 2:35the gift for the believers in Jerusalem.
- 2:39They even did more than we had hoped for.
- 2:41Their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to
- 2:45us, just as God wanted them to. So we have urged Titus, who
- 2:50encouraged your giving in the 1st place, to return to you and
- 2:54encourage you to finish this ministry of giving.
- 2:58Since you excel in so many ways, in your faith, your gifted
- 3:02speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from
- 3:06us, I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.
- 3:12I'm not commanding you to do this, but I'm testing how
- 3:16genuine your love is by comparing it with the eagerness
- 3:20of the other churches. You know the generous grace of
- 3:24our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your
- 3:28sakes he became poor so that by his poverty he could make you
- 3:33rich. Here is my advice.
- 3:36It would be good for you to finish what you started a year
- 3:39ago. Last year you were the first who
- 3:42wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it.
- 3:46Now you should finish what you started.
- 3:49Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by
- 3:52your giving. Give in proportion to what you
- 3:55have. Whatever you give is acceptable
- 3:59if you give it eagerly and give according to what you have, not
- 4:03what you don't have. Of course, I don't mean your
- 4:06giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves.
- 4:10I only mean that there should be some equality.
- 4:14Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need.
- 4:18Later they will have plenty and can share with you when you need
- 4:22it. In this way, things will be
- 4:24equal. As the Scriptures say, those who
- 4:28gathered a lot had nothing leftover, and those who gathered
- 4:32only a little had enough. But thank God, he has given
- 4:38Titus the same enthusiasm for you that I have.
- 4:42Titus welcomed our request that he visit you again.
- 4:45In fact, he himself was very eager to go and see you.
- 4:50We are also sending another brother with Titus.
- 4:53All the churches praise him as a preacher of the good news.
- 4:57He was appointed by the churches to accompany us as we take the
- 5:01offering to Jerusalem, a service that glorifies the Lord and
- 5:06shows our eagerness to help. We are travelling together to
- 5:10guard against any criticism for the way we are handling this
- 5:14generous gift. We are careful to be honourable
- 5:17before the Lord, but we also want everyone else to see that
- 5:21we are honourable. We are also sending with them
- 5:25another of our brothers who has proven himself many times and
- 5:30has shown on many occasions how eager he is.
- 5:34He is now even more enthusiastic because of his great confidence
- 5:38in you. If anyone asks about Titus, say
- 5:42that he is my partner who works with me to help.
- 5:46You and the brothers with him have been sent by the churches
- 5:51and they bring honour to Christ. So show them your love and prove
- 5:56to all the churches that our boasting about you is justified.
- 6:10Jesus, thank you for the generosity with which you bless
- 6:15us. Ah, you bless most of us with
- 6:18homes that keep us warm, with pantries that fill our bellies,
- 6:23with opportunities to go and to earn an income, with friends and
- 6:28family who love us and care for us.
- 6:32Lord, in so many ways we are incredibly blessed people.
- 6:38Lord, when we have opportunity to give generously from the
- 6:42generosity that you have shared with us, transform and soften
- 6:47our hearts so that it's not the worldly greed that might shape
- 6:51our behaviour, but your generosity of spirit.
- 6:56And Lord, not just with money and resources, but with our time
- 7:00and our energy, may we be generous in the way that we
- 7:05spend time with others and the way that we love and uplift
- 7:10others, just as you have done more generously than we will
- 7:15ever be able to emulate. So we thank you for your
- 7:18generosity. We thank you for giving us your
- 7:21Spirit and for loving us more than we will ever understand
- 7:26until we land an eternity in your embrace, and then we'll
- 7:31finally get it, and we will know your love fully, and it will be
- 7:35overwhelming. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:40loving name, Jesus, Amen.
