- 0:00Aloha. Monday morning. High Surf Warning is in effect through tomorrow morning on south and west-facing shores — dangerous water conditions and unusually high tides pushing coastal flooding risk through this evening.
- 2:12Today, moderate trade winds with occasional gusts and showers tapering off as drier air moves in. South and west beaches are under that warning — large, consistent swells with significant wave run-up. Vulnerable coastal roads and docks may flood, especially late afternoon and evening. If you're on the north or east side, conditions are calmer today.
- 2:30Surf-wise: Oʻahu's south shore at 4.2 feet — moderate and rough. North shore is 3.9 feet, small and manageable. Kāʻanapali on Maui is 3.1 feet, comfortable for swimmers. Hapuna on the Big Island is glassy and calm at 1.6 feet — safest bet for kids and snorkelers. Kauaʻi's Hanalei is 3.7 feet, small and easy.
- 2:45Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several roads and trails temporarily closed: Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail due to hazardous trees, and Lava Tube Bridge undergoing replacement. Kīlauea is at Advisory level after Episode 49 ended yesterday — the volcano is being monitored. Protect yourself from volcanic ash if you're visiting the park.
- 3:02Kīlauea just had a significant event. Episode 49 fountained for 7.5 hours straight before stopping abruptly at 5:05 PM on Sunday. The USGS stepped the alert level down from Watch back to Advisory — good news for the park, but it shows the volcano is still active and worth watching if you're heading there. Our new piece on the site breaks down what happened.
- 3:20Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions improve — lighter winds, gentler surf on north and east shores, and afternoon showers mostly up in the mountains. Wednesday through Friday, the Big Island and parts of Maui will see increased rain chances, especially windward and interior areas. Normal trade wind weather comes back by the weekend.
- 3:37If you're swimming today, stick to the north and east shores — the warning is serious on the south and west sides. Catch you tomorrow.
