- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here it is Wednesday, it's the 30th of
- 0:16October and you have tapped on play and invited me into your
- 0:20day. Hello friends.
- 0:21So good to have your company as we continue on this journey
- 0:26through the records of Nehemiah after he and his people have
- 0:31returned to their homeland of Israel after generations of
- 0:36exile in Babylon. And yes, today we are going to
- 0:40read more lists of names that are difficult to pronounce and
- 0:44that might not seem like the most riveting Bible passage as
- 0:47we go through it. But wouldn't it be amazing to
- 0:52have been one of these people? To be one of these people who
- 0:55travels all the way back to this promised land that they have
- 0:59heard about, for most of them have never been there.
- 1:02And to be able to re establish what it means to be their
- 1:07nation, this special holy nation set apart from God.
- 1:12So every time you hear me read a name, know that that name is
- 1:16attached to a person who would have walked with wide eyed
- 1:19wonder at the way that the God of the universe was providing in
- 1:23such real, tangible, physical ways in their life and their
- 1:28experience. And no wonder what way God is
- 1:31doing that today in your life and in my life that we just
- 1:35aren't seeing as obviously as these people would have seen.
- 1:39So maybe that's something to reflect on as we read through
- 1:43these lists of names of those who are the priests and the
- 1:48Levites of that community settling back into Jerusalem and
- 1:53into Israel. So let's read it together, shall
- 1:55we? Let us read together Nehemiah

- 4:34family of Jediah. A record of the Levite families
- 4:37was kept during the years when a liarship, Joyedah, Johanan and
- 4:42Jadua served as high priest. Another record of the priests
- 4:46was kept during the reign of Darius the Persian.
- 4:49A record of the heads of the Levite families was kept in the
- 4:52Book of History down to the days of Johanan, the grandson of a
- 4:56liarship. These were the family leaders of
- 5:00the Levites. Hashabaya, Sherebaya, Jeshua,
- 5:05Binuwai, Cadmill and other associates who stood opposite
- 5:09them during the ceremonies of praise and Thanksgiving, one
- 5:12section responding to the other as commanded by David, the man
- 5:16of God. This included Matanaya,
- 5:19Bakbukaya and Obadiah. Meshalim, Talmon and Akob were
- 5:26the gatekeepers in charge of the store rooms at the gates.
- 5:29These all served in the days of Joyakim, son of Jeshua, son of
- 5:33Jehoshidak, in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of
- 5:37Ezra the priest and scribe. For the dedication of the new
- 5:42wall of Jerusalem, the Levites throughout the land were asked
- 5:45to come to Jerusalem to assist in the ceremonies.
- 5:49They were to take part in the joyous occasion with their songs
- 5:52of Thanksgiving and with the music of symbols, harps and
- 5:56liars. The singers were brought
- 5:58together from the region around Jerusalem and from the villages
- 6:01of the Natophathites. They also came from Beth Gilgal
- 6:05and the rural area near Gibba and Azmavath, for the singers
- 6:09had built their own settlements around Jerusalem.
- 6:12The priests and Levites first purified themselves, then they
- 6:16purified the people, the gates and the wall.
- 6:20I led the leaders of Judah to the top of the wall and
- 6:23organised 2 large choirs to give thanks.
- 6:27One of the choirs proceeded southward along the top of the
- 6:30wall to the Dung Gate. Heshaya and half the leaders of
- 6:34Judah followed them, along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshalam, Judah,
- 6:39Benjamin, Shamaya and Jeremiah. Then came some priests who
- 6:44played trumpets, including Zechariah son of Jonathan, son
- 6:48of Shamaya son of Matanaya son of Macchiah son of Zakah, A
- 6:53descendant of Asaph and Zechariah's colleagues were
- 6:57Shamaya, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Mai, Nathaniel, Judah,
- 7:04and Hanani. They used the musical
- 7:07instruments prescribed by David, the man of God.
- 7:11Ezra the scribe LED this procession at the fountain gate.
- 7:15They went straight up the steps on the ascent of the city wall
- 7:19toward the city of David. They passed the House of David
- 7:22and then proceeded to the Watergate on the east.
- 7:26The second choir, giving thanks, went northward around the other
- 7:29way to meet them. I followed them together with
- 7:32the other half of the people along the top of the wall,
- 7:35passed the tower of the Ovens to the broad wall, then passed the
- 7:39Ephraim Gate to the Old City gate, passed the Fish Gate and
- 7:43the Tower of Hananel and on to the Tower of the 100.
- 7:47Then we continued on to the sheep gate and stopped at the
- 7:51guard gate. The two choirs that were giving
- 7:54thanks then proceeded to the Temple of God where they took
- 7:57their places. So did I together with the group
- 8:00of leaders who were with me, we went together with the trumpet
- 8:04playing priests, Alaikim, Marseilla, Mini Amin, Makaya,
- 8:10Elio and I, Zechariah and Hananiah, and the singers
- 8:15Marseilla, Shamaya, Eleazar, Uzzai, Jehovah, Nan, Malkajah,
- 8:21Elam and Izah. They played and sang loudly
- 8:25under the direction of Jezrehiah, the choir director.
- 8:29Many sacrifices were offered on that joyous day, for God had
- 8:33given the people cause for great joy.
- 8:36The women and children also participated in the celebration,
- 8:39and the joy of the people of Jerusalem could be heard far
- 8:43away on that day. Men were appointed to be in
- 8:47charge of the store rooms for the offerings, the first part of
- 8:50the harvest, and the tithes they were responsible to collect from
- 8:55the fields outside the towns the portions required by the Lord
- 8:58for the priests and Levites. For all the people of Judah took
- 9:02joy in the priests and Levites and their work.
- 9:05They performed the service of their God and the service of
- 9:08purification as commanded by David and his son Solomon.
- 9:12And so did the singers and gatekeepers.
- 9:15The custom of having choir directors to lead the choirs and
- 9:18hymns of praise and Thanksgiving to God began long ago in the
- 9:22days of David and Asaph. So now in the days of Zerubbabel
- 9:27and Nehemiah, all Israel brought a daily supply of food for the
- 9:31singers, the gatekeepers and the Levites.
- 9:35The Levites in turn gave a proportion of what they received
- 9:38to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
- 9:50Our Lord. We hear the long history of your
- 9:55people singing praises to you all the way back to David and
- 10:00Asaph, the OG couple who wrote all those psalms and really
- 10:05solidified praise and singing to You as what we do.
- 10:11Lord, let our hearts always be filled with praise to You.
- 10:16Let our lips never be far away from the songs of praise
- 10:20bursting forth from them. No matter what goes down today,
- 10:24Lord, I pray that you keep our hearts in a posture of praise
- 10:28towards You, so that as we celebrate the good things that
- 10:32You have given us in our lives, we remember to always attribute
- 10:35them back to you, the author, the origin of all good things
- 10:40that we enjoy. So we lift you up and we praise
- 10:44you, our wonderful, wonderful provider.
- 10:47And God, you are incredible. And we really do just offer you
- 10:52our hearts of praise and we offer these humble sacrifices to
- 10:57you and pray all of these things in the saving name of Jesus,
- 11:01Amen.
