- 0:00Hey everyone, it's Dune here, your host and Hype Girl. Today I'm taking you through the 1% method and giving you a wild example of how this has really worked for me with this show. I'm also taking you through some cool things I've seen recently in the UK and a recap on Hype Club and the Non-Alk brand. Let's get into it. This is me for Female Startup Club.
- 0:26Hey everyone, it's me, Dune, your host and hype girl. It is a Friday afternoon in London. I am looking out the window and it is, it's pretty grey as per usual. There's a little bit of blue skies but...
- 0:44You know, for any Londoners out there, gosh, this weather kills me. But that aside, I am excited to jump straight into today's episode. If you've been tuning in with me on the reg, you will be pretty up to speed with this framework that I love to talk about. I love to bring it up in a lot of episodes, or maybe you've read about it in Atomic Habits or...
- 1:10On the internet, I don't know. Truth be told, I actually haven't read Atomic Habits, but obviously it's mentioned on the show all the time.
- 1:18It's obviously on my never ending business books list. But anyway, it's pretty straightforward. Essentially, instead of getting caught up in all of the like millions of mountains ahead of you to reach your goals or to create new habits that you know will improve your life. The essence is that you just need to focus on doing the one percent.
- 1:44And in time, the compounded effect will leave you looking back down that mountain, that big mountain, wondering how the hell you got there, looking at all your amazing habits and how you've pretty much kicked goals in your business. And so I wanted to give you some real examples of how this has actually worked for me because it kind of hit me today that that 1% really pays off and it's,
- 2:11I'm just pretty happy about it. So I'm going to share. The first is more of a personal note. I think it was PA that actually first told me about this. And I think if I'm not corrected, we were actually living in Bali at the time. We were living in Bali for six months and like, you know, our routine had changed and all this kind of stuff. But we're in this really healthy, positive mindset. And we started implementing this towards small things in our life.
- 2:41to help build habits and help achieve things that we wanted to be doing daily, but we weren't. So literally I'm talking things like making sure the dishes are away every night before we went to bed or things like meditating every morning. So when we weren't in the mood to do something like this, we would just say out loud to ourselves, let's just be 1% better today.
- 3:07Just do this one tiny thing that will make my day 1% better. I'm not aiming for like huge overnight success with this habit, but if I can aim for those 1% little tiny daily wins, eventually I'm going to look back and things will become habitual and it will have compounded. Now on a business level, I can talk about the show.
- 3:31So in 2020, I set my sights on bringing this podcast, Female Startup Club, to life. And I gave myself a goal of 100 episodes in the year by December 31st. Now, of course, at the time, I literally laughed myself out of the room because as if that was going to be possible, like 100 episodes just seemed so insane because I think this was like when I realized that.
- 4:00how many I'd actually need to do. It may have been around like April, I'm going to say like just after the pandemic hit. And I think I had four episodes live at that point. So a hundred episodes by the end of the year. And of course,
- 4:15There are other things that kept me on track and kept me accountable. But essentially, I just stuck to this theory of aiming for 1% better every day, taking those small, tiny actions towards this random, big goal that I had, setting the habits that I needed to get through it and just like telling myself in the moment, just aim for the 1%. Just aim for the 1%.
- 4:43And now today I've just been doing my reporting on the show. And to be honest, I really don't spend a lot of time with numbers. It's not really my strength. Well, it's actually just not the strength of mine at all, full stop. But, you know, I take a quick peek.
- 4:58here and there to make sure that we're growing, that we're like on the up. But literally, that's pretty much it until today. When I looked at the growth we've had since I made the call to kind of like take things a bit more seriously and work towards that goal of 100 episodes and holy freaking bananas, I was so surprised to see we had grown 4000 something percent, which like,
- 5:26I don't know, to me, that seems like a really crazy big number.
- 5:31So back to the method or the framework, this is something so many people operate under. James Clear is the author of Atomic Habits, and he talks about the method, obviously, throughout the book and using that 1% as your guiding principle. So my whole point being here, just give yourself the goal of 1% and actually just say it out loud when you're not in the mood to do something like, I don't know what, make the bed. This is a really easy one.
- 6:01meditate at nighttime. Just say to yourself, let's do 1% better.
- 6:09And when you are saying that out loud and you're kind of like putting it into your mind, putting it out into the universe, you actually just like, oh yeah, I can do 1%. Like that's not, I'm not asking for a hundred percent better. I'm asking for 1% better of myself and you will be better off for doing it both in personal life and in business. Eventually it'll become so ingrained in your day to day. You won't even remember that you didn't like doing the thing or whatever.
- 6:37when you had a new goal and you were just getting started. So yeah, that's kind of like my whole 1% take it seriously. And I don't know, you're just going to achieve these remarkable results. As James Clear says on the cover of Atomic Habits. Onto some other cool stuff.
- 7:03drum roll. What was that? Is that like a scary noise? Definitely not that noise. Drum roll noise. I can't do that. I actually can't do a drum roll noise, but you know what I'm saying here. The non-alc brand may have found its new name. I forget if I told you this last time, but it's so exciting that it's worth sharing again. It's like 99% for sure,
- 7:27But until we've processed that trademark, we're going to remain pretty quiet about it and not get our hopes up.
- 7:34But as soon as we have some of this stuff locked in, obviously, I'm going to be so excited to share it with you and the actual details around who we worked with to help us put this together and help us get the vision, you know, into the digital paper, down on paper, as they might say. They're literally so great. And I can't wait to share more. If you guys are listening, love you.
- 8:01I also wanted to share some other cool stuff I've seen recently that might be really useful for you as an entrepreneur or a small business owner. For anyone in the UK, I shared this website in Hype Club recently, and I thought I should also just share it here because it's pretty cool. It's called grantify.io.
- 8:25And they essentially help you find grants that are relevant to you as a small business owner in the UK. And at the moment, they have a focus on women founded and owned companies. And by focus, I mean they have like 50K grants for women founded and owned companies. So it's definitely worth checking it out. It's definitely worth booking a call. I don't really know any more of the details other than like that. I just booked in a call to chat with them.
- 8:53myself. I also saw on their website, they handle R&D claims. So if you've been doing research and development and you're in the UK, you can claim back something like 70% of the spend that you've done and like get that back in cash. And I know about this before reading about it on Grantify because with PA's business, with his tech business, he was able to do that a couple of times, a few years in a row.
- 9:21And I'm talking literally like so much money that you get back that you've spent already. Like you've already spent that money in your business, but you get a huge portion of it back. And it's so crazy. They take a commission. They basically do all the paperwork and stuff for you, which I don't know. It's a lot of paperwork. Like I definitely wouldn't do it myself. I saw even when PA was doing it with the accountants, like it just took a lot of time, a lot of effort on their side. So anyway, check it out. Grantify.io.
- 9:50What else? What else? Oh, yesterday I took a call with this guy from a company called 10X Incubator.
- 9:58And essentially, they're on the lookout for women who have ideas in tech and want to explore partnering with a company who can help bring it to life. So the basic gist is that they can literally help you with everything from R&D through to the build of the tech. They can help you with fundraising. They can help you with sales right through to acquisition.
- 10:21And it's actually pretty cool if you don't see yourself going the journey alone. The downside from my perspective after speaking is that they do take a fairly big portion of equity. And I'm talking like 40, 60%, 40 to 60%. But in my mind, it's actually pretty cool if you're someone that knows that you have this idea, you have this like thing you want to work on, but you don't have that desire to do everything by yourself and you actually feel like.
- 10:50like overwhelmed at that kind of journey of going out and fundraising and all that kind of thing. They essentially act as a co-founder and they have all the systems, they have all the processes, they have the team, they have everything, but they just need people who A, like have a great idea and B, still want to be the face of a company. And yeah, so it's this pretty cool thing. I was really excited to connect with them. If anyone wants an intro,
- 11:18Just shoot me a DM on Instagram at Doon Roisin or an email to hello at femalesoutelclub.com and I can connect those dots for you. Last thing that I saw that I thought was kind of cool is Forbes is hosting a free 30 Under 30 Summit on October 11 and 12th.
- 11:39And it sounds pretty rad. I signed up to make sure that we can get all of the founders who they feature across onto Female Startup Club because I'm sure there's going to be some really amazing, insightful women on there. But yeah, it's free. I think you just go to like, I don't know where you go, but go to like Forbes. Actually, you know what? Go to Google and just type in Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit and it'll come up, I'm sure.
- 12:04Now, I also wanted to do a little quick recap on Hype Club because it is so cool. Yesterday, we had Kim Johnson, who gave us a masterclass on all things relating to community. So her background is she spent about five years building Glossier's community. And now she's the head of community at Geneva App.
- 12:30And so we as a group had this really insightful, juicy chat around how to approach community tips to making it a success. And something that we spoke about was this idea of rituals within the community. So the things that essentially you do every week, your members know that those things are a definite that they can tune into if they want to. They can opt in. They can opt out.
- 12:58And I thought it might be cool if I shared a few of ours. So in Hype Club on Mondays, every single Monday, we have this like ongoing chat for biz wins and biz fails from the previous week. And so on every Monday, we go in and we cherry pick a few that goes out in our weekly newsletter on Monday evening. And so it's pretty cool because obviously it's great that we celebrate the wins, especially the small ones.
- 13:27that sometimes get overlooked, but it's also wild to celebrate and learn from the fails. As we know from the women on the show, always talking at the end about fails. It's such a great opportunity to learn and to grow.
- 13:42But it's obviously also something that's actually kind of intimidating to share, especially in this like forum style group. But when you make it normal and you actually are literally celebrating it and highlighting it and, you know, shining a spotlight on it, it just becomes this new thing to learn from, grow from, push you forward and like not be ashamed of. So yeah.
- 14:08It's one of my favorite rituals that we have in the group. And obviously, if you read the newsletter that we send out on Mondays, I'm sure you will have noticed those biz wins and fails that we feature in there. I love it a lot.
- 14:22What else? We also do performance marketing Tuesdays with PA. So during the week, anyone can pop into this specific channel. They can post any questions relating to their ads, what's working, what's not working, like if they need help, whatever. And then on Tuesdays, he goes in and answers all the questions around ads.
- 14:43But he also records these quick Zooms, or maybe they're quick Looms, anyway, quick videos with like tips and insights from what he's picked up in the week and what's working at the moment, what's not.
- 14:57Most Thursdays and even sometimes on an extra Wednesday, we host live masterclasses, Zooms, and well, they're all on Zoom, live masterclasses and workshops relevant to the e-com slash DTC slash CPG space, basically like Kim's yesterday. And there's a whole range of people that come in to do that.
- 15:26So that's like a little, I think that was three, three rituals that we do. And now I'm wondering if you can help me because I want to know what else could be a cool ritual to add into our private network. So if you've got any genius ideas or if you're a part of a private group,
- 15:47Maybe just pay attention to see if they have some epic rituals that you really enjoy, because I would love to hear about it and add them into ours too. So if you've got any good ones, please do slide into my DMs at Doon Rishi and then I can implement them into Hype Club. What else? What else? What else? Oh, yes. Just quickly, I wanted to do a few shout outs to some members in our group.
- 16:14Firstly, a shout out to Rae Dorn. She launched her brand last week and the launch day was a major success, like an actual major success. We haven't had a chance to catch up to understand what she was doing in the lead up, but I just wanted to highlight her company for a moment, highlight her for a good hot second. She's a makeup artist and she works for people like...
- 16:40I think she works for Gayle King, which is obviously mind-blowing. Anyway, she started this really cool brand. It's called Bellion. And her first product is this ultra-hydrating, waterless face and body stick,
- 16:56that you pop on underneath your foundation to prep your skin and keep it feeling healthy and flawless and glowy, all that good stuff. And she obviously comes from a background of makeup, so she knows her stuff. And I just wanted to wish her a big congratulations. Yeah.
- 17:15Secondly, I wanted to shout out to Fiona in our group. She is the founder of this company called Pinky, which is a personal care brand for teens and tweens. And she's had these super cute pouches for women and girls to put their pads in. And her actual pads are made and manufactured in a way so that when you like...
- 17:38take them out of the wrapper or out of that plastic bit that they usually come encased in. It's actually instead this, I don't know what kind of fabric maybe it is, but essentially it doesn't make any sound when they're being taken out of that wrapper. So she's had these really cool pouches made. And obviously this is just such a cool brand. It's so important for young women and girls when they're at that, I don't know,
- 18:04When I think about me at that age in school, I was pretty awkward. So needing a little bit more privacy and not wanting to, you know, not wanting people to hear you take a pad out of its wrapper. She's solving that issue. So she's actually starting to partner with local schools in her area, which I also thought was really cool.
- 18:24Anyway, they're getting close to launching. So definitely head to her website to sign up for that. I think it's pinkypads.com, P-I-N-K-I-E pads.com. So that's a little bit about what's been going on over here in Hype Club for the Non-Alk brand and the podcast.
- 18:46A super quick reminder to get yourself involved in the Small Biz Grant. If you haven't heard me talk about this already, I'm giving away $1,000 cash in partnership with Flowium. And to enter, you basically just need to refer other small business owners and...
- 19:04And that gives you more entries. So for those of you who really want $1,000, I'm telling you, you could literally refer your entire email database and you would be in with a very, very, very small pool of people who are actually doing that and like taking it to the next level. So highly recommend getting involved. $1,000 cash, just saying. I would love $1,000 cash. That would be so cool. And secondly,
- 19:33Sometimes I forget to say this, but we have a really epic newsletter that goes out on Mondays. I don't know if you've seen it, but it's got some industry news. It has jobs from female founded or female owned companies. It's got insights from the show and I don't know, just a bunch of other updates. I'm told it's pretty cool. Obviously, I'm biased, but I'm told that it is. And especially if you want to read something that like lifts you up on a Monday, I obviously recommend it.
- 20:00My wingwoman, Josephine, is really the shining star behind the scenes on this one, and she makes it come to life every week. She is also our gal on Instagram. So if you're ever on the gram, drop in, say hello to her and know that you're speaking to Josephine. She is the actual best.
- 20:20Last thing is that I'm kind of thinking about looking for a co-host to join me in these solo episodes. So I'm going to put that to a vote. What do you think? What do we think? Do we think a co-host could be a good idea? I'm kind of on the side of the fence of like this solo thing is really hard.
- 20:43And maybe having someone else with me to kind of jam for like a certain number of episodes at a time could be kind of cool. And then we could mix it up. We could get different hosts. Anyway, that's what I'm kind of thinking. But...
- 21:00I want to hear what you think. So if you have any thoughts on this or if you have any tips to solo episodes, please slide into my DMs. I would love to chat with you. Anyway, that's all for today. I love you all. I am so grateful for you. Please check in with me anytime. I am Doona Roisin in all the places, TikTok, Instagram. I rarely check Twitter, but there too. LinkedIn. Yeah, I think that's all the places.
