- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27That that's amazing. So you went from, you know, mid
- 0:30twos to to the threes and like, here's the standard.
- 0:32So again, standard show up on time.
- 0:36Do what's expected of you, right?
- 0:37Pay the Caesar what is due to Caesar, right?
- 0:40And if you don't, here's the consequence.
- 0:44Yeah. And The thing is, and it wasn't
- 0:46just and it wasn't just the the on time, like it was a lot of
- 0:51things that I, I adjusted in my program, like my kids don't come
- 0:55into and like even I have some of them in math class, they will
- 1:00check the kids who cuss in front of me.
- 1:02Hey, you can't cuss in front of coach, right?
- 1:06Not to say that I've never cussed ever, like in front of
- 1:09the kids, like I slip up sometimes, right.
- 1:13But you know, that was another thing because we were getting
- 1:17deemed for for cussing like you can, you can lose points for
- 1:21that and attract me. So that like I had to help have
- 1:26them understand like this is a standard because it not only is
- 1:30it not a professional thing, but also like you're going to end up
- 1:34costing yourself at a track meet.
- 1:37So like all of those small things about like how to be
- 1:40professional, you know, how to carry yourself, things like
- 1:43that. All that stuff rolls over and
- 1:45the kid, like you, I was so surprised, but I didn't realize,
- 1:49like what the kids paid attention to like they do, they
- 1:53paid they paid attention to the fact that I was married, You
- 1:56know, when when, when my son was about to be born, like every
- 2:03single man, I had kids that weren't on even on the track
- 2:06team, you know, coming in. Hey, coach, how's your wife?
- 2:09How's the baby? Hey, coach, baby's being born.
- 2:12How's the baby? You know, what's the name?
- 2:14You know, can't, can you, can you bring them over here?
- 2:16I'll babysit for you. You know, things like that are
- 2:20things that, you know, like they say like thankless jobs and
- 2:24things like that. Like you cannot put a price tag
- 2:27on, you know, the relationships that you build.
- 2:29And then like kids, like kids are like loyal, like loyal to a
- 2:34fault. And so you know, you, you always
- 2:37want to make sure like you're, you're taking care of what has
- 2:41to be taken care of to set them up for success.
- 2:44Because what you don't want is you don't want to fail them at
- 2:47this level. Then they go to the next level
- 2:48and then they are in for a rude awakening because that coach has
- 2:51to feed their family on you, on you succeeding or failing.
- 2:57Right. And you know what the coach and
- 2:59I and I think of what you're saying is really important here.
- 3:03You're, you're the example, right?
- 3:05And we, we pull our kids forward.
- 3:10A lot of people try to push him and go do this, do this, do
- 3:13this, but you aren't doing it right.
- 3:15No, no, no. How about we, we show up the way
- 3:17we're expecting. And that one of the things that
- 3:19I teach our kids, if you're, if you're going to ask somebody to
- 3:23do something, you better be doing the most of that thing
- 3:25you're asking. I mean, that's all our coaches.
- 3:27If you want to, if you want people to show up on time, you
- 3:30better be the most on time person you've ever met in your
- 3:32life, right? If you want people to work hard,
- 3:34you better be the hardest working person they see.
- 3:37If you want people to have integrity, you better have the
- 3:39most integrity out there. And you can't have you can't be
- 3:45a over here or you can't plant apple seeds and expect
- 3:49watermelons, right? It doesn't work like that.
- 3:52So you got this program and you know, we kind of wrap it up here
- 3:57because I don't want to get you back to your family.
- 3:59One walked in the door be on time and that's kind of the, you
- 4:03know, the minimum standard data, other things.
- 4:06I'm sure that went into it, right.
- 4:08So what meet the mark. If you don't, here's a
- 4:10consequence, we'll put you over here.
- 4:12Don't care how fast you are. There's no you got to respect
- 4:15the system and and and your team and respect each other.
- 4:18And if you don't, then this is what you get right?
- 4:21Then you're looking at, hey, here's our plan for the year.
- 4:25This is what we do. Here are the things that I, I
- 4:28really want to focus on that are important for us, for this team.
- 4:32Showing the data, explaining to the kids what's really
- 4:35happening, making sure that you're customizing, tailoring
- 4:38the trainings to what it is that they need and finding ways to
- 4:43expose those weaknesses, but having enough wisdom to stop
- 4:48when things don't make sense, right?
- 4:51Instead of just sticking to the proverbial plan.
- 4:54Then academics, let's get it together.
- 4:58We've got to be on this. We got to be here.
- 5:00Here's the target, y'all and meet this target and then you
- 5:05qualify for X, right? So what I see here is a system
- 5:10of here's the goal, here's the outcome.
- 5:14Here are the ways that we can get there.
- 5:18It's up to you to get there, right?
- 5:19So you've given them, you've empowered the kids, you've
- 5:23empowered the staff, you've shown by example what it's like
- 5:28and to be what you're asking them so that they can follow
- 5:33your building trust with the athletes.
- 5:35And that is what has essentially created this culture of very
- 5:40successful athletes. People ask, how do you build a
- 5:46winning program? You start with a standard.
- 5:50You don't back down from that standard.
- 5:52You hold people accountable, you empower them to hold each other
- 5:56accountable and you become the example.
- 5:59And then you mix in all the fun data in between and Excel sheets
- 6:02like Coach has here that it's really kind of cool.
- 6:07And then you, you, you, you execute and you do that
- 6:11consistently. Coach, that's amazing.
- 6:17I do have a couple of questions. I know Coach Debney would kill
- 6:19me if I. Ask these.
- 6:21Questions. He's going to jump on me.
- 6:26So the two questions we have and then we'll kind of wrap up and
- 6:30roll out. The first one is what is
- 6:32something that you could have only learned from your USATF or
- 6:37other courses. So he said that I was like,
- 6:42what, What am I going to? What should I say to this?
- 6:44You know, I'm not sure. Well, The thing is this, this
- 6:47layout that I have right here on the screen is actually from
- 6:50USATF, right? And as a matter of fact, what
- 6:54you can't see is this down here. Let me Scroll down.
- 6:59Come on, come on, come on. So you see this this little
- 7:01thing right here, this this yellow.
- 7:04This is directly from the Sports Science 2 course that was that
- 7:09was taught by Doctor Brookings. Doctor Brookings from UCLAI
- 7:17believe she was at UCLA. She might not be there anymore,
- 7:20but that was who taught the sports science 2 course.
- 7:24So if you ever do a level 2 course for USA track and field,
- 7:28you have to do sports science two first before you can test
- 7:32for your certification. And so this is what I used to
- 7:37when I like, and I was, I looked at it like every day when I
- 7:42first, when I first started creating programs because I went
- 7:47to the jumps first, but I still had to figure out how to coach
- 7:50the sprints. And I hadn't like done it.
- 7:55They had, I hadn't done their course on the locks And you
- 8:01know, the I didn't have the hurdle equation and all of this
- 8:03other stuff, right. So I was kind of, you know,
- 8:05doing a lot of research on my own trying to figure it out, but
- 8:07I always had this as a as a foundation for the energy system
- 8:15that I was taxing. The other thing is, if you look
- 8:21right here, I have a note to myself.
- 8:23Create a base fitness assessment for testing before Christmas
- 8:26break. So standing broad jump, standing
- 8:29triple jump, 40 yard dash, 30m fly overhead shop put slash Med
- 8:33balls go 45 seconds Sprint in a one mile run, right.
- 8:37So it, this is not the fitness assessment, it's just, it was
- 8:44just a note that I made to myself to make sure that I
- 8:47include the five biomotor abilities in whatever assessment
- 8:51I do so that I have a good understanding of where the
- 8:55athlete is as a whole. So that was something that I
- 8:58learned from Level 2. I don't want to move that.
- 9:03That was something I learned from the Level 2 of course with
- 9:05USA Track and Field. And the other thing is I tell
- 9:09people they should go like even if you think you know everything
- 9:13though, because guess who's there?
- 9:15College coaches are there, right?
- 9:17So I've met some college coaches at level 2 that I kind of got an
- 9:22upper hand on because guess what, if I call them, you know,
- 9:26they already know me. They know I went through the
- 9:27same instruction that they did. They saw me present whatever I
- 9:31presented during that time, depending on which course I met
- 9:34them in. And then I also have a lifeline,
- 9:43right? So my you're, when you go to
- 9:45USATF, the instructor. I, I can't speak for level one.
- 9:50Well, some of my level 1 instructors were also my level 2
- 9:53instructors. But at level 2, specifically,
- 9:57when you get those instructors, if you are like struggling, like
- 10:03floundering, and you just reach out to my head coach, I'm really
- 10:05struggling with this. I got this many kids, I'm trying
- 10:07to figure this out. They they'll, they'll reach back
- 10:10out to you and they'll talk to you through, you know, and that
- 10:14was why I learned that you can just talk to a college coach
- 10:18just normal. Because when I first started
- 10:21coaching, I was like in awe. I mean, and a lot of it had to
- 10:24do with the university in the marks that the that the athletes
- 10:27had. But you know, you know, Coach
- 10:30Chu, who's down at TCU, Coach Morgan told me to reach out to
- 10:35her, one of the best humans I've ever met in my life.
- 10:38You know, hey, coach at Talton State, Bobby Carter, one of the
- 10:47best people I've met in my life, met him at USATF jumps right
- 10:52when he was still at University of Arizona.
- 10:55You know, like you learn by going to these places, by
- 11:00interacting with people, like how the game actually works and
- 11:06and coaches will tell you like, that's not going to work for me,
- 11:11you know, so I know, like the coaches that I talked to does
- 11:15tell me shut up. Nah, I can't use them or, you
- 11:20know, hey, I didn't think I could use them, but yeah, like,
- 11:25give me a call. Right.
- 11:28And so it's that's what it is. Like coaches are still people
- 11:32and I didn't know how much or how little they knew in college
- 11:39until I started going to these coaching clinics.
- 11:42And they don't know how much you know or don't know until you go
- 11:45to these coaching clinics and you then you get to kind of show
- 11:48them. Yeah, you know what, it's, it's
- 11:52funny that you say that cause of course we know when you've been
- 11:54in a game long enough, you, you find out that they're what it,
- 11:58there was a past president and he talked about any level you go
- 12:05to, you're going to find geniuses and you're going to
- 12:08find fools. And so that I find that to be
- 12:13true in every group or environment I've ever seen.
- 12:17You know, that includes college coaches, high school coaches,
- 12:19middle school youth, the pros, you've got some geniuses and
- 12:24then you got some people that probably should not be coaching,
- 12:27right. So I've never mentioned any
- 12:29names. I've met some people and I'm
- 12:31like, who put you in charge? That's not right.
- 12:35But hey, you know, to each their own.
- 12:38And I pray for the athletes that they find great people at all
- 12:41times. OK, so the second question here
- 12:44is what is something that you could not learn from a course
- 12:49but had to learn by experience? That I'm on a perfect campus.
- 12:54So the building that we train in is the long haul.
- 12:58Coach Deadman, I saw your name pop up.
- 13:00Coach Deadman, if you are ever in the Indianapolis area, give
- 13:03me a call and I'll give you a personal tour of campus.
- 13:08So the building we train in, it is a square.
- 13:12Guess how long the square is going all the way around?
- 13:16No, it's exactly 200 meters. I'm going.
- 13:18To go for it. So, so when I'm training for
- 13:21indoor, where do I train at? I train, I train in that
- 13:24building. And so I have a hallway that's
- 13:2780 meters. The side hallways are 20 meters,
- 13:31no, 70 meters and 30 meters on the side, right.
- 13:35And depending on how far, how deep into the corner they cut,
- 13:39it's it, it can be a little bit more, it can go all the way up
- 13:44to like 250 meters, right. And so I learned that I learned
- 13:50that before I went to USATF for sprints, I was just, I had my
- 13:55walking stick and I was just measuring.
- 13:57And then another building, the hallway is 120 meters exactly
- 14:02from wall to wall. And so I'm like, OK, that I can
- 14:07work with this because when I need to do 80 meters, they have
- 14:0940 meters to slow down. And you know, most of them are
- 14:12not, you know, really going all the way through the line when
- 14:15they first start anyway. So, so I I learned that just
- 14:24from being on the campus and and that's the creative coach brain
- 14:29side of things. The other thing that I did learn
- 14:32from USATF initially in the Sprint sports, if you change
- 14:36the, if you change the rest time, you can change the type of
- 14:40workout that you have. So one of the workouts that was
- 14:43shared, this wasn't USATF, it was just one of the coaches.
- 14:47I want any instructor shared it. And it's called a 400 meters the
- 14:50hard way, right? So it's called 400 the hard way.
- 14:53So it's a 40, it's 40 meters and it's a relay.
- 14:58So it's basically down, back, down back.
- 15:01So you go down and back five times or 1040s, but everybody's
- 15:05getting less than a minute break.
- 15:07Basically you break it up into the group so everybody gets
- 15:10about a minute rest. And so when you shorten the rest
- 15:13like that for 40, it changes the the response that the body or
- 15:22you change the the adaptation. So maybe you only have about 40
- 15:27meters to work with, but you need to do a speed indoors
- 15:29workout. You can do something like that
- 15:32to get that kind of work out instead of having to rely solely
- 15:36on the distance. That's powerful.
- 15:39So our 400 meters, what the hard way was different.
- 15:42Our coach will make us run. Well, this was outdoor, but
- 15:45that's really cool. We did.
- 15:46We did 100 meters and walked back 50.
- 15:48We had to make our way all the way around the track.
- 15:51Yeah, we that, that 50m walk back was like, you know, we're
- 15:54trying to be like zombies. Yeah, trying to walk back as
- 15:57slow as possible. Yeah, man, that that thing that
- 16:00speeding doors and there or that tempo.
- 16:01Oh my God, You were thinking by the time you get to that 6781,
- 16:06you're like, yo, I'm done, right.
- 16:08And the kids, that's one of the thing that they don't
- 16:10understand. Like sometimes you tell them to
- 16:12go 7075%, you know, 3/4 speed here.
- 16:15Do you think they're like, oh, no, we're not running fast
- 16:18enough. By the time they get to that 7th
- 16:19or 8th 1, they're like, they're like leaning over looking for
- 16:23every bit of trying to hold their lunch in.
- 16:25So yeah. Yeah, absolutely the.
- 16:28Hardest part is keeping them at that pace when they when they
- 16:31want to go faster, right? They don't understand the
- 16:33recovery in time. So man, coach, man, I know, I
- 16:37know at some point we're going to have to do a round two and
- 16:39dig into some more of this technical stuff because I know
- 16:42that that everybody really loves and enjoys the technical pieces
- 16:46of it. And again, I think we're we're
- 16:47probably going to do another coach's round table, get all the
- 16:49coaches together and just talk through the speed talk through
- 16:52the science, because I think that's important.
- 16:55Like the sports science part of it is important.
- 16:57The data is important, but also learning how to build
- 17:02relationships with your kids and not be a, you know, a Richard,
- 17:08take that and y'all, y'all filled in the blank on that one,
- 17:10right? Yeah, I mean, but but I felt the
- 17:14need to share that because everybody focuses so much on the
- 17:18the technical piece and it's almost to the point of
- 17:21forgetting like what coaching is really about.
- 17:23Like in coaching, like what is coach literally mean?
- 17:28It is getting somebody from point A to point B.
- 17:32And, you know, coaching is both an art and a science.
- 17:37And I feel like I've mastered the art of coaching the science
- 17:42I'm still working on, you know, getting it, figuring out exactly
- 17:46how the science works for my kids because that's that's
- 17:51sometimes you just got to be in it long enough.
- 17:55So, but yeah, this is a good conversation.
- 18:00I love being on here. Coach Deadman, I'm going to
- 18:03reach out to you. I'm going to shoot you my
- 18:05contact information because our, our state association, our
- 18:10coaches association just released some meats.
- 18:13So I'm going to send those your way for the indoor season.
- 18:19And then I'll shoot you my information.
- 18:21Coach Jones, if you, if you have anybody who wants more like the
- 18:27real nitty gritty, because I can, I can really nerd out on
- 18:31the science stuff. I just opted I just, you know,
- 18:36one where I'm at, like I thought I was going to be in in the Home
- 18:39Office and I'm not in the Home Office.
- 18:42I thought I was going to be on my other laptop.
- 18:44I'm not on my other laptop, you know, but I still wanted to make
- 18:47sure that I was here. But if anybody wants like some
- 18:50like, like I said, like the real nitty gritty, like nerdies kind
- 18:54of stuff, like I have all kinds of stuffs, man.
- 18:57I have the, the Pythagorean theorem stuff for high jump, you
- 19:02know, you know, like I, I got all kinds of stuff.
- 19:06I have the equation, like I, I told you the equation for the
- 19:09hurdles. I have that down pack.
- 19:11I have the actual like equation for measuring out the push float
- 19:16turn drill I talked about for the long jump.
- 19:21Like I got a lot of stuff that I wanted, I didn't know I was
- 19:25going to be able to share on screen.
- 19:27So the next time, you know, we get on next time, next time we
- 19:33get on and I'll make sure I have some of that stuff kind of
- 19:36preloaded so I can just share it and people can and, and then I
- 19:40can send you the the PowerPoint over as well.
- 19:42So. Oh yeah, look, we, we've got a
- 19:45lot ahead of us, right? We didn't even have to do it all
- 19:49in one night. Man up at the division is is
- 19:52coming to pass. The reason why I created the
- 19:54track tribe was for this, right? For us to be able to get
- 19:58together to share our knowledge, our resources and to sharpen
- 20:04each other, right. Because I may know something
- 20:06that you don't know. You know some things that I
- 20:08don't know. And if we share that, yes.
- 20:11It's, it's a competitive edge. We think we hold on to things
- 20:15and we're just man listen, the more we share with each other,
- 20:17the better the competition gets and the better the, the the
- 20:20meats get, the better the kids get.
- 20:22And if you're really a coach that loves the kids, you want
- 20:24the best of competition, right? We don't dodge any smoke as we
- 20:28say, we want all the smoke as we say down South, right?
- 20:30We looking for the. And.
- 20:32I'm going to tell you if you're ever and I, I don't know if you
- 20:34got travelled or not, but if you ever guys ever come down to the
- 20:37Atlanta area or maybe we'll go down to the Bob Hayes meet at
- 20:41some point. We can't go this year.
- 20:42But like the Bob Hayes meet in Florida, you know, we, we, we,
- 20:47we got some smoke down here in Georgia too.
- 20:49If you don't want to come get some.
- 20:51Me, me and me, me and you know, my coach Jones, the boys head
- 20:55coach, he and I were just having a conversation today.
- 20:59We're going to sit down and make sure we set up things like the
- 21:04paperwork so that we can get some of our kids to travel some
- 21:08of these other places. Because like you said, like I
- 21:11want the kids to be able to go down to University of Kentucky
- 21:15to some of these indoor meets that are just open because,
- 21:18yeah, transparently I just need to see grown people.
- 21:21Like y'all need to see what it's like when when you get there and
- 21:24you look lowly old freshman and you running against somebody
- 21:27that might be 2324 years old because they skipped the year
- 21:30or, you know, they had a red shirt from COVID or, you know,
- 21:34all the different ways in which, you know, the eligibility gets
- 21:38sliced. Like you need to see that
- 21:39because some of these folks are not playing like they are.
- 21:44They're trying to make a living. Listen, you can, you can the
- 21:48Alabama. We we go to Alabama for our
- 21:49indoor meets because we have to go unattached.
- 21:52We're only, we don't really have an indoor season in Georgia.
- 21:54So if you ever go to the the Birmingham complex, man, I'm
- 21:58going to tell you do you did there.
- 21:59Soon I've I've looked at it, I I I found it online.
- 22:04It's nice. I want to go.
- 22:05Smoke in the city over there man and I can we just now that the
- 22:09freshman girls that just came in this year for in Georgia are
- 22:14going to shake up the entire state.
- 22:16I can tell you right now, I don't know if you ever heard of
- 22:18Melanie Doggett. She ran 22 as an. 8th grader in
- 22:23the 200 of the most ridiculous. She's she's a freshman now at
- 22:27the high school level. So we get to see her.
- 22:29There are a couple of other girls out here that are running
- 22:32like 54 seconds in the open 400. Yeah, they, they're, they were
- 22:38just 8th graders and they're they're coming up.
- 22:40There's some girls that are jumping like nineteens 20s that
- 22:43I'm telling you man, it's some smoke down in the South.
- 22:47I got, I got a couple freshmen coming in.
- 22:50I'm I'm just just keep your eyes open.
- 22:53Because somebody's. Freshman coming in up here they
- 22:55they going. I have a freshman that I fully
- 22:58expect to break two or three of our school records before she
- 23:02finishes her sophomore year. So so it was good talking with
- 23:08you. I enjoyed being on here.
- 23:13Anybody in the Tract Tribe is always open to reaching out to
- 23:17me because I know I will be asking questions as well.
- 23:22I've trained in a lot of limited space and limited capacity
- 23:27environment. So if anybody wants to know like
- 23:31how to do XYZ 123, you know, but they only got this right.
- 23:36There's some things you can work with, you know, and I know
- 23:42coach, Coach Damon, I think his session is going to be over a
- 23:46large group training. So I'm going to tap into that as
- 23:48well because I would like to see how he does some things as well.
- 23:51So thank you for having me. Man, coach, I appreciate you.
- 23:55Thank you. Especially in these times and
- 23:56these circumstances. Man, I appreciate your
- 23:58commitment. I appreciate you being in the
- 23:59standing in the gap for these kids, man, You're an amazing man
- 24:03and I'm really grateful for you. I'm grateful that you're there
- 24:07helping those kids as well and just being the mentors that they
- 24:10need sometimes, being the father figures that they need, standing
- 24:14there with them, being empathetic and being a solid
- 24:17human being and being the example.
- 24:19We don't have a lot of that a lot of times.
- 24:21And so it it does mean the world, if to no one else, it
- 24:24means the world to me that I know that I've got a brother up
- 24:27in Indianapolis that is doing it right and consistently and with
- 24:33integrity. So I really appreciate you.
- 24:36And then also thank you to your wife who allowed us to borrow
- 24:40you for a brief time to share with us your great knowledge.
- 24:43So please thank her. If I have to send flowers, let
- 24:46me know to keep you out of the out of the doghouse.
- 24:51We appreciate you praying for your son that all is well and to

- 24:58at peace with everything that is happening.
- 25:01And you know, we know things are going to go in a great way.

- 25:12we've got Coach Deadman too, so you just talked about that.
- 25:14We're going to be talking about simple systems and big results.
