Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Carolyn Young: Retail NZ Chief Executive on why she quit the Ministerial Advisory Group for victims of retail crime
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Board of the Ministerial Advisory Group into Retail Crime
- 0:02Speaker 1: is falling apart at the scenes. It seems three out
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the five members of the board resigned since twenty
- 0:07Speaker 1: twenty four when it was created. CEO of Retailing ZED
- 0:10Speaker 1: Carolyn Young is the latest. She blames board chairs Sonny Kshelle.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Good morning, Carolyn, What an Ryan? What exactly can you
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us an example of what he did, you know,
- 0:20Speaker 1: to really irk you or to make you quit.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Look, I think it's been a series of challenges that
- 0:29Speaker 2: have gone on from a very long time. Especially I
- 0:32Speaker 2: think it started back when the Dairy Owners Association to
- 0:36Speaker 2: put out a press relief personally attacking me and my professionalism,
- 0:40Speaker 2: and Sonny was unprepared to do anything about another member
- 0:45Speaker 2: on the NAG attacking another member, so you know, it's
- 0:50Speaker 2: really unprofessional. And yeah, he just laughed about it and said, oh,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know, these things have happened. And one of the
- 0:58Speaker 2: other members who was pooring me on the mag you know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: he raised it with the chair and said it was
- 1:03Speaker 2: inappropriate for that sort of thing that happened in the media.
- 1:07Speaker 1: What did when you say attacking, what what was the attack?
- 1:10Speaker 2: They put out a met press release which in March
- 1:13Speaker 2: last year, which effectively attacked me personally and my professionalism,
- 1:19Speaker 2: made up information and just put it out in the press.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So it was really uncaud for because they were unhappy
- 1:27Speaker 2: that the members that I represent, so the members of Italians,
- 1:32Speaker 2: didn't support Sitizan's arrest and therefore we spoke out about
- 1:36Speaker 2: that and that was a very that was kind of
- 1:39Speaker 2: like the catalyst of where everything you know, went from there.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So you're just doing your job, Carolyn, what is it?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Why do you think Goldsmith's holding on to Sonny?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Look, you have to really speak to the minister about that,
- 1:55Speaker 2: you know. I think that Sonny has has some perspectives
- 1:59Speaker 2: that inter lined with a lot of other retailers, but
- 2:02Speaker 2: they still represent some portion of retail within New Zealand.
- 2:06Speaker 2: And you know, I think his voice is useful to
- 2:10Speaker 2: be heard, but I don't think it's the only voice,
- 2:12Speaker 2: and I don't think it's the leading voice.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Do you think it should be gone as chair? Maybe
- 2:17Speaker 1: it's still on the board, but gone as chair? Yeah,
- 2:20Speaker 1: would you come back that had changed?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Look, I think there's a few things that had to
- 2:26Speaker 2: change on it. I mean, it's a pretty untenable position.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But my members are really keen for me to stay
- 2:34Speaker 2: on the mag because it's really important to be involved
- 2:37Speaker 2: and be able to put forward, you know what a
- 2:40Speaker 2: big portion of retail crime as it's being experienced in
- 2:43Speaker 2: New Zealand and to support them and their work, that's
- 2:46Speaker 2: my job. So you know, I guess that's the key
- 2:51Speaker 2: thing that kept me there for so long. And we
- 2:52Speaker 2: had a lot of conversations at board level around what
- 2:55Speaker 2: was the right thing for us to do and was
- 2:58Speaker 2: it right for retail and the had to be involved
- 3:00Speaker 2: an minister advisory when we're going to agreeing with the
- 3:03Speaker 2: positions that were being taken.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Carolyn, appreciate your time this morning. Carolyn Young Retailing is
- 3:07Speaker 1: the chief executive and no longer on the mag, which
- 3:09Speaker 1: by the way stands for Ministerial Advisory Group. If you
- 3:12Speaker 1: didn't pick that up.
- 3:14Speaker 2: For more from early edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live
- 3:17Speaker 2: to news Talks. It'd be from five am weekdays, or
