Latest / Modularity Podcast / Citation-Worthy Pages Beat Keyword Soup
Transcript
- 0:00Google's getting a little more ruthless now.
- 0:02If your page reads like, "We provide innovative solutions for all your needs,"
- 0:08the AI results are basically treating it like a fake ID at the door.
- 0:12And now that Google's showing little subscription labels and inline source links,
- 0:17the pages winning are the ones a machine can quote in one clean sentence.
- 0:23Yeah, the robot bouncer wants specifics.
- 0:25Not vibes.
- 0:26If your service page looks like it was written by six managers and one legal
- 0:30department, you're not getting cited -- you're getting escorted out.
- 0:34Exactly.
- 0:34And the recent core update swings -- or, well, the ongoing volatility -- keep
- 0:39pointing at the same stuff: clear expertise, real local signals,
- 0:44fast mobile performance, and content that answers the question FAST.
- 0:49Not eventually.
- 0:51Not after a 400-word throat-clearing exercise about your passion for excellence.
- 0:57Wait -- "first screen" fast, right?
- 0:59Like before I scroll, before I pinch-zoom, before your hero image of a smiling guy
- 1:03in a headset loads from the moon?
- 1:05Yes.
- 1:05First screen.
- 1:06Above the fold, if you wanna use the old newspaper term.
- 1:09A plumbing page should say "Emergency Plumber in Erie, PA" or whatever the service
- 1:16is, who it's for, where you do it, and what the next step is.
- 1:21Call.
- 1:22Book.
- 1:22Request quote.
- 1:24The AI summary and the human both need the same thing: clarity.
- 1:30So let's make that concrete.
- 1:31If I'm a roofer and my page headline says "Protecting What Matters Most" -- which,
- 1:35by the way, every roofer and insurance company on Earth has used -- that's bad
- 1:39because the H1 isn't actually saying "roof repair"?
- 1:42That's part of it.
- 1:43Your title tag and your H1 should basically agree on the job.
- 1:46Not identical robot copy, but close enough that Google and a customer both know,
- 1:52"This is the roof repair page for this town or service area."
- 1:55One page, one job.
- 1:58If the page is trying to rank for roof repair, storm restoration,
- 2:02gutters, siding, insurance claims, and solar installation all at once...
- 2:08it's keyword soup.
- 2:10Keyword soup is the perfect phrase.
- 2:11It's like opening a restaurant menu and every item is somehow chicken,
- 2:15steak, pasta, sushi, and dessert.
- 2:17I don't trust any of it.
- 2:19Right -- and search doesn't either.
- 2:20A strong page is almost boring in its clarity.
- 2:23Plain-English answer up top.
- 2:26Primary service named immediately.
- 2:28Then proof: pricing cues, even if it's "starting at" or "free estimates."
- 2:34Location proof.
- 2:36Service-area proof.
- 2:37Testimonials from actual customers.
- 2:40FAQs that handle objections.
- 2:42And internal links to deeper pages so the page isn't making unsupported claims in a
- 2:47vacuum.
- 2:49That "pricing cues" thing matters more than people think.
- 2:51If you can't give exact pricing, fine.
- 2:53But saying "projects typically start at $1500" or "same-day diagnostics available"
- 2:59at least tells me what universe we're in.
- 3:01Otherwise it feels like walking into a store with no price tags,
- 3:04which is always code for "prepare to be annoyed."
- 3:07Yes.
- 3:08And for local businesses, the "prove you're real" layer is huge.
- 3:12Name the towns.
- 3:14Show the service area.
- 3:15Mention the actual office if you have one.
- 3:18Use testimonials that mention the place and the service.
- 3:21Those are strong signals for regular search, and they're exactly the kind of details
- 3:25AI systems can lift and cite.
- 3:28Let me try to play this back.
- 3:29So the page needs to answer three things almost immediately: what do you do,
- 3:33where do you do it, and what should I do next.
- 3:35And then underneath that, you stack evidence so neither Google nor the customer has
- 3:39to just take your word for it.
- 3:42That's it.
- 3:42Almost.
- 3:44I'd add one more: why should anyone trust THIS page over the ten lookalikes?
- 3:51That's where one original stat, one real example, one tiny
- 3:57specific detail can carry a lot of weight.
- 4:01"Installed 42 commercial access control systems in northwest Pennsylvania last
- 4:06year."
- 4:07"Average turnaround: 48 hours."
- 4:10Doesn't need to be fancy.
- 4:12It needs to be REAL.
- 4:15Forty-two installs beats "industry-leading excellence" every day of the week.
- 4:18Amazing how numbers from your actual business are better than adjectives stolen from
- 4:22a brochure.
- 4:24And then there's mobile speed, which people keep pretending is some deeply mystical
- 4:29engineering problem.
- 4:30Usually it's not.
- 4:32Oversized images.
- 4:34Bloated scripts.
- 4:36Five trackers and a video background nobody asked for.
- 4:39Fix the basics and half the battle's over.
- 4:43Yeah, if your page is 9 megabytes because the banner image is basically a movie
- 4:47poster, the AI crawler's not impressed, and neither is the person on a parking-lot
- 4:51LTE signal.
- 4:52Compress the images.
- 4:54Cut junk scripts.
- 4:55Make the page feel light.
- 4:57So stop writing like a committee that's afraid of commitment.
- 5:00Make the page obvious.
- 5:02Make it useful.
- 5:03Make it impossible to misread.
