Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This media podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:13Speaker 2: conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newmarten. Today we're
- 0:17Speaker 2: joined by Jannis, Randall, Brody, Seth, Tresa, Cory, and Hansei.
- 0:22Speaker 2: This is a ten round quiz show with questions from
- 0:24Speaker 2: Meat Eater's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking,
- 0:28Speaker 2: and there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate five
- 0:30Speaker 2: hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing
- 0:34Speaker 2: and for the start of the week. This week we're
- 0:36Speaker 2: looking at the prevalence of perfect games. In twenty twenty four,
- 0:40Speaker 2: we saw a big uptick in winners getting ten questions correct.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Prior to last year we had five perfect games ever,
- 0:47Speaker 2: but in twenty twenty four we had seven. Four of
- 0:50Speaker 2: those we're from Randall and three were from Brody. On
- 0:54Speaker 2: this new pace, we have perfect games about twelve percent
- 0:58Speaker 2: of the time.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Four Do we have stats on who besides Randall and
- 1:02Speaker 3: Brody have gotten perfect games?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I think it's only them and Steve. I think it's
- 1:06Speaker 2: the perfect games are exclusive to those three.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Huh wow. I would not have guessed that I had four.
- 1:13Speaker 2: You had four, Brody had three one. There was one
- 1:15Speaker 2: game where you guys died so humble you guys tied
- 1:19Speaker 2: for a perfect game. That's right.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That was fun.
- 1:22Speaker 2: So the new pace is about one out of every
- 1:25Speaker 2: ten episodes. We haven't had one yet in twenty twenty
- 1:28Speaker 2: five though. Now here's our Infrequently Asked Questions segment. If
- 1:31Speaker 2: you have a trivia related question for our crew, send
- 1:34Speaker 2: it to Trivia at the medieater dot com with the
- 1:37Speaker 2: subject line I f AQ. Nick Landry says, with all
- 1:40Speaker 2: the cryptid talk lately, it got me wondering if anyone
- 1:42Speaker 2: from the crew believes in Bigfoot or other cryptids, what
- 1:46Speaker 2: do you guys say?
- 1:48Speaker 1: No?
- 1:48Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, okay, a big no from the room.
- 1:52Speaker 2: We also had HANSI asked last week for the definition
- 1:56Speaker 2: of cryptid. I looked it up. This is from Merriam Webster.
- 1:58Speaker 2: It says an animal just sasquatch or lock ness that
- 2:02Speaker 2: has been claimed to exist but never proven to exist.
- 2:07Speaker 2: So that doesn't change anyone's.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Mind what we're about like aliens.
- 2:11Speaker 2: You know, I don't know if that's a cryptid. I
- 2:13Speaker 2: suppose well, I think it bends the rules a little bit.
- 2:16Speaker 2: There's like like skin walkers, like, you know, kind of
- 2:21Speaker 2: move through portals. They say, so, is that an alien?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Then?
- 2:24Speaker 2: I don't know. You think aliens are real?
- 2:27Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Maybe what cryptid could most likely be real?
- 2:31Speaker 1: Two inch mule deer, something at the bottom of the ocean.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Mountain, lions in Pennsylvania, sup of cobbers.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Okay, Fiel, do you believe in any cryptids?
- 2:42Speaker 3: Absolutely? Not No, and I'm very judgmental towards people who do. So.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Do you do you personally know some folks like outside
- 2:51Speaker 2: of meat Eater No.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Not not, not personally. I think I think if we
- 2:54Speaker 3: if we lean into the ghosts department, I mean, I'm
- 2:57Speaker 3: sure we all know people who believe. People in this room,
- 2:59Speaker 3: I believe ghosts, but I think it's all rather silly. Okay,
- 3:03Speaker 3: I do, sorry.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Some validity in the the observation that if aliens and
- 3:09Speaker 1: these mythical creatures are real, they're sure picking some interesting
- 3:14Speaker 1: characters to come visit, you know.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's yeah, yeah, I'm with the randall. If there's a
- 3:19Speaker 2: cryptid out there, it's at the bottom of the sea,
- 3:20Speaker 2: yeah somewhere.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, it's too many trail cameras.
- 3:23Speaker 2: That's right, too many cell phones handy as well.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Yes, well, they don't show up on trail cameras.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Oh I forgot that.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I'd also use the example of a seilacn F last week.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I should point out Cela cans were not cryptids, but
- 3:37Speaker 2: cryptozoologists will use that to explain how cryptids could be real. Hey,
- 3:41Speaker 2: we thought this thing was gone and then it shows
- 3:44Speaker 2: up sixty five million years after we thought that they
- 3:46Speaker 2: were swimming around the ocean. So cryptozoologists really love Azila
- 3:50Speaker 2: can a SELACNT All right, no housekeeping this week, so
- 3:53Speaker 2: we can get right to trivia. The Shelby index for
- 3:55Speaker 2: today is a four point five, so our winner should
- 3:58Speaker 2: get nine correct and and with that we're onto the
- 4:01Speaker 2: game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil, Look, I need
- 4:07Speaker 2: to know what I stand to win everything?
- 4:11Speaker 1: How's that just tend to win everything? Demon suckers?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Question one. The topic is conservation, and as always, this
- 4:26Speaker 2: will be multiple choice. Which of these is not a
- 4:30Speaker 2: fee free day in National Parks for twenty twenty five?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Is it Martin Luther King Junior Day, Juneteenth Veterans Day
- 4:41Speaker 2: or Christmas? Which of these is not a fee free
- 4:47Speaker 2: day in National Parks for twenty twenty five? Your four choices,
- 4:53Speaker 2: MLK Junior Day, Juneteenth, Veterans Day, Christmas.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Tough one.
- 5:01Speaker 2: This is a tough one to start out. I saw
- 5:04Speaker 2: you give a little thumbs up to fill Randall while
- 5:07Speaker 2: the drop was playing. What was that?
- 5:09Speaker 3: I fed them all the answers.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Oh, no, it's just that the drops sounded good today.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it hit with some extra clarity.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Sure, yeah, put a little bump in the lower range
- 5:20Speaker 3: and the high range. Give it that.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And you know, my headphones weren't working for the first
- 5:25Speaker 1: few moments of this game until Corey solved the mystery
- 5:28Speaker 1: of the unplugged headphones.
- 5:29Speaker 3: So oh wow, oh thanks.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I was thrown off my game. But then when I
- 5:32Speaker 1: heard the drop, I felt uh huh okay, empowered again again.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Three of the one of them.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Three of them are fee free days, one of them
- 5:42Speaker 2: is not. Is it Martin Luther King Junior Day, June teenth,
- 5:47Speaker 2: Veterans Day? Or Christmas? Is everybody ready?
- 5:51Speaker 6: No?
- 5:53Speaker 2: How many?
- 5:53Speaker 3: You got it?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Narrow down to?
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yanni?
- 5:56Speaker 2: Four? Yeah?
- 5:57Speaker 6: Four?
- 6:00Speaker 1: This is one of those questions. We can't really narrow
- 6:02Speaker 1: it down. No.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yeah, they're all federal holidays.
- 6:11Speaker 1: If you've got your annual pass.
- 6:12Speaker 2: That's right. If you pay your eighty dollars at the
- 6:15Speaker 2: beginning of the year. Janny, I think we're waiting on you.
- 6:21Speaker 2: You ready go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 6:25Speaker 2: seth saying Juneteenth, Jannis, June teenth, Corey, Christmas, Randall, Christmas, Hansei, MLKDA, Tressa, Christmas,
- 6:36Speaker 2: Brody Christmas. The correct answer is Christmas. I think about
- 6:42Speaker 2: more than half of our players got that right. There
- 6:45Speaker 2: are seven fee free days for national parks this year.
- 6:49Speaker 2: They are the National Day of Mourning for President Jimmy Carter, MLKDA,
- 6:54Speaker 2: the first day of National Park Week, Juneteenth, the anniversary
- 6:58Speaker 2: of the Great American outs Act, National Public Lands Day,
- 7:02Speaker 2: and Veterans Day.
- 7:04Speaker 1: An interesting assortment.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know how they select their seven fee
- 7:11Speaker 2: free days. I notice a lot of them seem like
- 7:14Speaker 2: they avoid the summer when the traffic is highest. Besides
- 7:17Speaker 2: maybe Juneteenth.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Does that change every year?
- 7:21Speaker 2: I tried to look back for twenty twenty four. It
- 7:22Speaker 2: was almost the same besides the Jimmy Carter Morning Day,
- 7:26Speaker 2: so it's been that way for a little while. Question
- 7:29Speaker 2: to the topic is trapping. This is our listener Question
- 7:32Speaker 2: of the Week, which was won by Michael Galing. For
- 7:34Speaker 2: sending this great question. Michael is going to get a
- 7:36Speaker 2: board game signed by the crew. If you want a
- 7:38Speaker 2: chance to win the listener Question of the Week, then
- 7:40Speaker 2: send your question to Trivia at the medeater dot com.
- 7:44Speaker 2: This five letter word is another name for a short
- 7:47Speaker 2: tailed weasel or ermine. This five letter word is another
- 7:55Speaker 2: name for a short tailed weasel or ermine. Do you
- 8:00Speaker 2: have this one right if.
- 8:01Speaker 7: I'm remembering correctly.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Okay, I just saw one of these the other day's
- 8:08Speaker 6: doing digging in the snow.
- 8:11Speaker 1: It was probably two feet of snow.
- 8:13Speaker 6: He was jumping around on top, and then all of
- 8:15Speaker 6: a sudden he disappeared, Pop up three four feet.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Where are they?
- 8:19Speaker 5: There's some hanging here somewhere in there.
- 8:22Speaker 2: All right behind Seth. Seth has some some there. He's
- 8:27Speaker 2: now showing them to the camera. Maybe that'll inspire the
- 8:29Speaker 2: answer for the five letter word. That's another name for
- 8:32Speaker 2: a short tailed weasel.
- 8:35Speaker 7: A step through short.
- 8:38Speaker 2: The tails are long. They look extra magical in the snow. Yeah,
- 8:44Speaker 2: those things look like cryptids the way they move.
- 8:46Speaker 6: A little bit. I'd hate to be a mouse near
- 8:50Speaker 6: one of.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Those five letter words. That's another name for short tailed
- 8:53Speaker 2: weasel or mine. This one, right, I think?
- 8:56Speaker 1: So?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:57Speaker 4: One of the greatest wildlife encounters we've ever had at
- 9:02Speaker 4: our old place was we had everybody there for the
- 9:04Speaker 4: holidays and one of those buggers run around chasing a
- 9:07Speaker 4: rabbit and it lasted an hour or more, and the
- 9:11Speaker 4: rabbit keep getting away. They'd get caught up and it'd
- 9:14Speaker 4: be a big skirmish, yeah, everywhere, and then they get
- 9:19Speaker 4: away again. And before that, ermine stayed on him and
- 9:22Speaker 4: eventually killed it.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Taking down something that weighs ten times more than that.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Pretty impressive.
- 9:29Speaker 2: What do they do with one of those things when
- 9:30Speaker 2: they get him? I assume they like fill up then,
- 9:32Speaker 2: But do they cash them anywhere?
- 9:35Speaker 4: He did drag him off.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Her maybe, So.
- 9:39Speaker 2: We have Yanni and Brody are the only two players
- 9:42Speaker 2: who were confident. Do you'd like your Auntsier, Cory, No,
- 9:45Speaker 2: I don't like it. Think how about you, Randall?
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm having trouble with the five letter parts, which I
- 9:51Speaker 1: assume is key.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Okay, do our other players give up?
- 9:58Speaker 7: Oh, Seth, you're gonna know when he says that, I know,
- 10:02Speaker 7: I know?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Randall? Oh yeah, go ahead, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 10:11Speaker 2: We have Seth without an answer, Janni says stoat, Cory
- 10:15Speaker 2: says merit. Randall without an answer, Hansey says that's Marks
- 10:22Speaker 2: says wezeh.
- 10:24Speaker 7: And the last thing.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I think.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The correct answer is stow t. Yanni and Brodie got
- 10:32Speaker 2: that one.
- 10:32Speaker 4: I don't.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I've never even heard that s t o a t
- 10:36Speaker 2: I heard?
- 10:40Speaker 7: Is that more of a like a British name.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I think Europeans are more likely to use it. Stoat
- 10:46Speaker 2: comes from the Dutch word stout, which means bold. They
- 10:49Speaker 2: are the second smallest weasel in the world, just out
- 10:52Speaker 2: weighing the least weasel. In general, bigger animals have longer
- 10:56Speaker 2: gestation periods, but Stoat's buck that trend. They have a
- 11:00Speaker 2: gestation period of two hundred and eighty days, which is
- 11:03Speaker 2: similar to bison, moose, and humans.
- 11:06Speaker 4: That's interesting. Question has heard that they call that You
- 11:09Speaker 4: call it a short tail weasel in the summer, and
- 11:12Speaker 4: then when it changes its coat you call it a
- 11:15Speaker 4: ermine in the winter or stout?
- 11:18Speaker 2: Question three, The topic is hunting. This brand started making
- 11:22Speaker 2: jewelry in eighteen ninety five and binoculars in nineteen thirty five.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Half of the room has already wrote down their answer. Randall,
- 11:33Speaker 2: Cory Yanni and Seth are confident. This brand started making
- 11:37Speaker 2: jewelry in eighteen ninety five and binoculars in nineteen thirty five. Anzi,
- 11:44Speaker 2: you got this one right, I think? So? Do you
- 11:48Speaker 2: own any of this jewelry or binoculars?
- 11:51Speaker 1: I wouldn't mind. Yeah, I wouldn't mind owning some of it.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But I don't can't afford it.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a hint from Seth.
- 11:58Speaker 4: It's always funny though when you see this brand that say,
- 12:02Speaker 4: I don't know they shall have mallst wars.
- 12:05Speaker 8: Yeah, another hint, like what let's keep going with?
- 12:10Speaker 2: To be honest, a lot of chatter. Trista could use
- 12:13Speaker 2: another hint if you got one. I know the word
- 12:15Speaker 2: is okay, I couldn't think of it. Well, might be wrong.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Yeah, you're going to direct.
- 12:25Speaker 6: Or not.
- 12:25Speaker 1: You get that one for free, but the next one's
- 12:27Speaker 1: gonna cost you.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You may have a one hundred percenter here this when
- 12:30Speaker 2: Everybody wins started making jewelry and eighteen eighty five and
- 12:36Speaker 2: binoculars in nineteen thirty five. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Every kid begins with k oh.
- 12:44Speaker 2: The whole room says Swarovski. They got it. The correct
- 12:49Speaker 2: answer is Sworowsky. Taarovsky was started in Austria as a
- 12:53Speaker 2: high quality crystal and gemstone company. The founder son made
- 12:57Speaker 2: their first pair of binos using the same technology and
- 13:00Speaker 2: machines that were used for fabricating jewelry. The brand followed
- 13:04Speaker 2: up the success of their first binos by making rifle
- 13:07Speaker 2: scopes in nineteen fifty nine and telescopes in nineteen ninety one.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Question four the topic is public lands. This next great
- 13:15Speaker 2: question is via Moses Taffle. The Ruby Ridge standoff, which
- 13:20Speaker 2: Randy Weaver claims was incorrectly named, happened in this state.
- 13:28Speaker 2: The Ruby Ridge standoff, which Randy Weaver claims was incorrectly named,
- 13:33Speaker 2: happened in this state.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Who's Randy Weaver?
- 13:37Speaker 2: Tell you about it?
- 13:38Speaker 1: The flame text?
- 13:39Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:39Speaker 1: The first few times I met Steve, he asked me
- 13:43Speaker 1: if anybody ever called me Randy Weaver?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Do you look like him?
- 13:48Speaker 1: I don't know, what's just the name is similar?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Randal willis Randall?
- 13:52Speaker 1: Do you go by Randy? Does anyone ever call you
- 13:54Speaker 1: Randy Weaver? He did that on at least three separate occasions,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and the first time I said no, and I thought
- 14:01Speaker 1: to myself, am I thinking of the same Randy Weaver.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And then yeah, subsequently it is clear that he was
- 14:11Speaker 1: thinking of this Randy Weaver as well.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Doctor Randy Weaver. That's what we will refer to.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You as Randall's.
- 14:17Speaker 4: The first time that we met was when you came
- 14:19Speaker 4: to do the podcast to talk about your dissertation.
- 14:22Speaker 1: At a at an Airbnb in Seattle.
- 14:24Speaker 4: That's right.
- 14:26Speaker 1: What was the dissertation, my my PhD dissertation on Hunting
- 14:31Speaker 1: and Politics and the Modern United States?
- 14:34Speaker 2: Here you are now again, there going to be Ridge
- 14:36Speaker 2: stand up, which Randall Williams claims was incorrectly named happened
- 14:41Speaker 2: in this state.
- 14:41Speaker 1: No such thing.
- 14:43Speaker 9: Everybody ready, I've got a factoid for this one. Perfect,
- 14:46Speaker 9: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have said yes,
- 14:49Speaker 9: and Yanni saying Idaho. Corey says Oregon, Randall says Idaho.
- 14:55Speaker 9: Hansi says Kansas. Tresa and a Brody say Idaho. The
- 15:00Speaker 9: correct answer is Idaho.
- 15:02Speaker 1: People seem to write it down fast.
- 15:03Speaker 4: So I was like, what's at Oklahoma, Kansas?
- 15:10Speaker 1: I was like Oklahoma, Kansas?
- 15:12Speaker 6: Right.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Andy Weaver was a white supremacist who was wanted for
- 15:18Speaker 2: illegally selling firearms and eleven days standoff happened when US
- 15:23Speaker 2: marshalls shot and killed his dog and son while surveiling
- 15:27Speaker 2: while surveilling Weaver's property. Weaver's wife and a US marshall
- 15:30Speaker 2: were also killed in the siege. Weaver later said the
- 15:33Speaker 2: media incorrectly identified the ridge he lived on as Ruby
- 15:37Speaker 2: Ridge when it was actually Cariboo Ridge. Deputy Marshall Dave
- 15:41Speaker 2: Hunt agreed with Weaver, later saying in an interview that
- 15:44Speaker 2: the wrong name always bothered him. So it should have
- 15:47Speaker 2: been the Cariboo Ridge standoff, not the Ruby Ridge standoff.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So I have a friend who grew up in Standpoint
- 15:54Speaker 1: and her dad was fishing Ruby Creek on the day
- 15:58Speaker 1: that this all started. Oh and he had to take
- 16:01Speaker 1: like a four hour detour home.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Okay, that's all I got. Yeah, the day before, the
- 16:06Speaker 2: Weaver family also went fishing on Ruby Creek. I don't
- 16:09Speaker 2: remember what they were celebrating, but they caught some trout
- 16:12Speaker 2: cooked him right on the water there. And I had
- 16:14Speaker 2: also read that the US marshals they thought this was
- 16:17Speaker 2: going to be a quick arrest. They all had a
- 16:18Speaker 2: fishing trip planned the next day too, like the day
- 16:21Speaker 2: that everything went down. Question five. The topic is wildlife
- 16:26Speaker 2: Western timber pigmy mojave, tiger, blacktail, and great basin are
- 16:33Speaker 2: all types of this animal. For specificity, if you think
- 16:39Speaker 2: it's a lab, say lab rather than dog or black lab.
- 16:44Speaker 2: That's how specific you need to be. Western timber pigmy
- 16:48Speaker 2: mojave tiger, blacktail, and great basin are all types of
- 16:54Speaker 2: this animal.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Are you leaving any hour? Or is this all of them?
- 16:57Speaker 2: Not going to tell you anything? Again? This is question five.
- 17:03Speaker 2: We'll get a scoreboard update from Fill the engineer after this.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Western timber pigmy mojave tiger, blacktail, and great basin are
- 17:15Speaker 2: all types of this animal. See some writing and erasing happening.
- 17:23Speaker 6: Bro.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Do you like your answer?
- 17:25Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 17:25Speaker 2: Kind of okay, kind of likes his answer. I think
- 17:28Speaker 2: this could keep the perfect game going for him.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Mmmmm.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Western timber pigmy mojave tiger, blacktail, and great basin are
- 17:43Speaker 2: all types of this animal. Does anyone else like their answer?
- 17:48Speaker 4: I like mine?
- 17:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I believe I've seen.
- 17:53Speaker 2: A couple maybe three of these all right?
- 17:57Speaker 4: Where at one was in Arizona.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Oh wow, he's getting an actual hint here. Randall, you
- 18:13Speaker 2: like your answer?
- 18:14Speaker 4: Not in the least okay, Oh, Randall, yeah, I know,
- 18:18Speaker 4: you know it is.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 18:27Speaker 2: Seth saying Salamandrianna says rattlesnake, Cordy rattlesnake, Randall tortoise, Hansi rattlesnake,
- 18:36Speaker 2: Tresa snake, Brody rattlesnake. The correct answer is rattlesnake. Rhythroom
- 18:42Speaker 2: did pretty well, that's right. By some counts, there are
- 18:45Speaker 2: more than thirty types of rattlesnakes in North America. The
- 18:49Speaker 2: Eastern diamondback is the biggest venomous snake on the continent,
- 18:52Speaker 2: growing up to eight feet long and thirty five pounds
- 18:55Speaker 2: some source of thirty five pounds. Some sources claim the
- 18:59Speaker 2: mortality rate for humans struck by Eastern diamondbacks is forty percent.
- 19:05Speaker 8: I know trust is like dying and if you're giving her, yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I'm sure she can have that one. I did say
- 19:13Speaker 2: you need to be as specific as lab, so don't
- 19:15Speaker 2: write down dog or black lab Testse can have.
- 19:17Speaker 1: The point is that you're right in there.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Seth and Hanse have two points, Randal and Corey have three.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Jannis and Trusta have four. Yeah, and with a perfect
- 19:30Speaker 3: game is Brodie Henderson.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Question six, the topic is mountain men. This next great
- 19:41Speaker 2: question is via Michael Corter. This person whose biography declared
- 19:47Speaker 2: him California's greatest mountain man was related to Samuel Adams
- 19:51Speaker 2: and John Quincy Adams.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Oh, there just happens to be a guy in the
- 19:56Speaker 4: room that's been working on a mountain project.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Have you know this has nothing to do with anything that.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Little bit of a little bone ski there.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Yeah, not even that.
- 20:10Speaker 4: It's not even that.
- 20:10Speaker 5: It's like slam dump.
- 20:13Speaker 2: This person on whose biography declared him California's greatest mountain
- 20:19Speaker 2: man was related to Samuel Adams and John Quincy Adams.
- 20:23Speaker 7: It's like saying, what kind of dog does you? Honest?
- 20:26Speaker 7: Betellas just like that.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Randall, do you have this one right?
- 20:32Speaker 1: I think?
- 20:32Speaker 2: So, okay, Brody, do you have this one right?
- 20:35Speaker 7: Maybe I remember the story.
- 20:37Speaker 4: So I feel like someone recently was talking about this
- 20:41Speaker 4: because I feel like the related that the Adams Adams.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Again, their biography declared them California's greatest mountain man, and
- 20:50Speaker 2: they're related to Samuel Adams and John Quincy Adams. Brody
- 20:57Speaker 2: and Randall.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Oh, I don't count me among the ones.
- 21:01Speaker 2: That I'm saying you're the only players who haven't answered.
- 21:06Speaker 2: We'll say Randall's the only confident player.
- 21:08Speaker 7: Then, hey, Randall, you know you should write some books
- 21:13Speaker 7: on mountain man.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Well Randall did give a hint. He said what
- 21:17Speaker 2: he let's not give nothing to do with uh this question?
- 21:23Speaker 7: So so it's a trick question.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm just telling you what Randall said.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Well, I just meant that he wasn't he didn't make
- 21:32Speaker 1: the cut.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Oh okay, another hint from Randall.
- 21:37Speaker 7: He didn't make the cut for the book that Randall
- 21:39Speaker 7: Rode on mountain.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Many discussed how many times Randall read this fellow's name,
- 21:47Speaker 4: and he was researching for this book.
- 21:50Speaker 2: This person whose biography declared him California's greatest mountain man.
- 21:55Speaker 8: Last night, when you guys were talking about the questions
- 21:58Speaker 8: that Pencer's going to write, Randall.
- 22:00Speaker 7: Did you give him this one?
- 22:02Speaker 2: Michael, I was busy less.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Did you give him some good flavor text?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Is everybody ready? Yeah? Sure, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 22:15Speaker 2: We have seth saying mister Adams, Johnny says, Hugh Glass,
- 22:20Speaker 2: Corey says Bishop Adams. Randall says Grizzly Adams. Christ Hansei
- 22:25Speaker 2: says grizzly Adams. For Essa says John Cracker. Brody says
- 22:32Speaker 2: Jededi Smith. The correct answer was Grizzly Adams. Hansie and
- 22:37Speaker 2: Randall got that.
- 22:39Speaker 1: It would have been a weird question if there wasn't
- 22:41Speaker 1: so much context there for the rest of the relationship.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. The grizzly Adams was born in Massachusetts
- 22:52Speaker 2: in eighteen twelve. In his early years he worked as
- 22:55Speaker 2: a shoemaker and caretaker of exotic animals. Then he moved
- 22:58Speaker 2: to California during the Gold Rush, which is when he
- 23:01Speaker 2: started his mountain Man era of hunting and trapping. This
- 23:04Speaker 2: is also when he got famous for capturing wild animals
- 23:07Speaker 2: like grizzlies that he'd raise his pets. Question seven, Do
- 23:11Speaker 2: you have any flavor texts to add to that? Randall?
- 23:13Speaker 1: No, he headed west in eighteen forty six, and no, yes, well, well,
- 23:19Speaker 1: our our book focuses on the rendezvous erav.
- 23:25Speaker 7: Yeah, wasn't the mountain Man era like done?
- 23:28Speaker 1: I mean, there's still mountain men, you know, but like
- 23:31Speaker 1: the classic Rocky Mountain Rendezvous era, the last rendezvous in
- 23:35Speaker 1: eighteen forty.
- 23:36Speaker 2: So Grizzly Adams shows up like six years late.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Yea, make the cut like Jeremiah Johnson that Steve likes
- 23:43Speaker 1: to point out.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Question seven. The topic is woodsmanship. The National Weather Service
- 23:50Speaker 2: describes this type of snowstorm as quote when cold air,
- 23:54Speaker 2: often originating from Canada, moves across the open waters of
- 23:58Speaker 2: the Great Lakes. This is question seven. The National Weather
- 24:05Speaker 2: Service describes this type of snowstorm as when cold air,
- 24:10Speaker 2: often originating from Canada, moves across the open waters of
- 24:14Speaker 2: the Great Lakes.
- 24:14Speaker 3: So when you were talking with Bowie last night about.
- 24:16Speaker 2: The questions, yes, oh yeah, I reached out.
- 24:25Speaker 3: He grew up his entire life dealing with this ship. Yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I got a few snow days out of this.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Okay. So our players from Pennsylvania and Michigan are confidence.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I mean, we all saw the AFC playoffs this weekend.
- 24:41Speaker 2: There's little hints from.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I figured, as long as we're doing this, do you
- 24:45Speaker 1: have this one right?
- 24:46Speaker 2: Randall?
- 24:47Speaker 1: I do?
- 24:47Speaker 2: Okay, how about you Corey?
- 24:49Speaker 4: No, I'll tell you what the Montana boy.
- 24:54Speaker 6: We had some pretty nasty water in the you know,
- 24:57Speaker 6: flathead lake effect snow that we get, okay, but they're
- 25:02Speaker 6: not that great Trusty, you're still keeping pace with our winners.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Do you have a chance? Okay again question seven. The
- 25:11Speaker 2: National Weather Service describes this type of snowstorm as when
- 25:15Speaker 2: cold air, often originating from Canada, moves across the open
- 25:19Speaker 2: waters of the Great Lakes.
- 25:21Speaker 7: Boy Spencer, back in my day, we used to get
- 25:23Speaker 7: some big ones.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Okay, Is everybody ready?
- 25:29Speaker 1: That was shortly after Grizzly Adams.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Brody.
- 25:34Speaker 7: They knew each other before global warming started.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 25:41Speaker 2: have seth Andy Honest saying lake effect, you safect, but
- 25:48Speaker 2: then he wrote down blizzard. Randall says lake effect, Hansi
- 25:52Speaker 2: lake effect, Tressa says snow flurry, and Brody says lake effect.
- 25:57Speaker 2: The correct answer is lake effect. If you'd rewind, you'd
- 26:01Speaker 2: hear Corey say we got some pretty big flathead lake effects.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Snowstuffs in the post.
- 26:07Speaker 3: We could do that scrubbing there is sure you're giving
- 26:11Speaker 3: me more work random, it'll be fun.
- 26:14Speaker 2: This episode only comes out in like sixteen hours.
- 26:20Speaker 6: We had some pretty nasty water in the you know,
- 26:22Speaker 6: flathead lake effect snow that we'd get, okay, but they're
- 26:27Speaker 6: not that great.
- 26:30Speaker 2: The States most impacted by lake effects snow are referred
- 26:33Speaker 2: to as the snow Belt, which includes portions of Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
- 26:39Speaker 2: New York, and Vermont. This region is also home to
- 26:42Speaker 2: America's four snowiest cities, which are Syracuse, Eerie, Rochester, and Buffalo.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Question eight, the topic is cooking. McCormick says, this ingredient
- 26:53Speaker 2: has a subtle licorice flavor and is what brings Italian
- 26:57Speaker 2: sausage and marinara sauce to life. We have some confident
- 27:04Speaker 2: players in the room. Question eight, the topic is cooking.
- 27:08Speaker 2: McCormick says, this ingredient has a quote subtle licorice flavor
- 27:13Speaker 2: and is what brings Italian sausage and Marinera sauce to life.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I just assumed the Weather Service would have had a
- 27:20Speaker 1: better name for.
- 27:20Speaker 7: It, lake effects snow, lake effect warnings.
- 27:26Speaker 1: M M, that's what it is, a lake effect warning.
- 27:28Speaker 1: It's a type of blizzard.
- 27:29Speaker 8: You want me to explain it to yesser Midwest.
- 27:31Speaker 1: It's a type of weather.
- 27:33Speaker 8: The weather comes, the cold there comes over the warm
- 27:37Speaker 8: lakes and.
- 27:39Speaker 2: It makes that noise. Wake up to the snow.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Day and then Josh Allen goes out and plays in it.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Mm hmm, Lake Effect.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Mount Bohemia.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Oh yeah, those things are great.
- 27:50Speaker 8: We'd occasionally get a day off from school for those things.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Did you guys know that today is a National Squirrel
- 27:58Speaker 4: Appreciation Day?
- 27:59Speaker 2: Of course I didn't. How are you going to celebrate?
- 28:03Speaker 4: I just found out myself, just, you know, minutes before
- 28:06Speaker 4: we started playing trivia.
- 28:07Speaker 2: So did someone tell you happy national?
- 28:11Speaker 4: Yeah? My wife send me a little text about it.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Okay, it's everybody ready.
- 28:19Speaker 3: A squirrel conservation group.
- 28:22Speaker 7: I don't know, but there.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Should be one way for Yanni to start Rocky Mount Squirrels.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Mm hmm. Is everybody ready again? McCormick says, this ingredient
- 28:33Speaker 2: has a subtle licorice flavor and is what brings Italian
- 28:36Speaker 2: sausage and Marinaire sauce to life. Go ahead and reveal
- 28:40Speaker 2: your answers. We have Seth and Yanni and Corey and
- 28:44Speaker 2: Randall saying fennel. Hansi says, uh, fennel seed.
- 28:50Speaker 7: Are those two things the same thing?
- 28:52Speaker 3: They are?
- 28:54Speaker 2: Tressa says tobacco. Brody says fennel. The correct answer is fennel.
- 28:58Speaker 2: The room did very well well.
- 29:07Speaker 3: The fennel that grows like you wouldn't call that fennel seed.
- 29:09Speaker 3: But I think the fennel that's used in cooking is
- 29:11Speaker 3: fennel seed.
- 29:12Speaker 1: But is it?
- 29:13Speaker 2: No, no, no, we're talking about yeah. He said, how do
- 29:16Speaker 2: you pronounce it? And I think it's all said it differently.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I don't not star anise and I don't care. Yeah,
- 29:27Speaker 2: so you can. You can have fennel seed flavor is
- 29:30Speaker 2: described as bold and sweet with warm notes of licorice.
- 29:34Speaker 2: It's commonly used in Spanish, Italian, and Middle Eastern Cuisines.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Some recipes on our website that feature it include venison lasagnia,
- 29:42Speaker 2: goose skewers, roasted hog loin, and venison salami. You could
- 29:47Speaker 2: have given me ten chances to describe fennel seed flavor
- 29:51Speaker 2: and I would have never come up with licorice. So
- 29:53Speaker 2: you guys would have.
- 29:54Speaker 7: Said, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Once once I read it it made sense, I was like,
- 29:57Speaker 2: it does taste like licorice.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I would Christian, I wrote down, the flavor is called
- 30:03Speaker 1: the flavor is called anasat is the name of that
- 30:06Speaker 1: liquorice flavor. Well, we learned, and then I just thought
- 30:09Speaker 1: more about Italian sausage, and I thought, I don't know
- 30:11Speaker 1: about Annis and Italian sausage, but I know Fennel.
- 30:14Speaker 3: I used to use ana so oil for catching coons
- 30:16Speaker 3: when I was trapping.
- 30:17Speaker 2: They like that.
- 30:18Speaker 5: We used to, we used to, uh do some fish
- 30:21Speaker 5: s thence yeah, and what.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Coons don't like? What don't coons like traps? To give
- 30:30Speaker 2: us a scoreboard update.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Let's see here, Seth and Tresa, you hung on tight,
- 30:38Speaker 3: but uh Corey too, That's right, Sorry, Corey. And then
- 30:45Speaker 3: we've got Hansi with five points. Randall and Giannis have
- 30:48Speaker 3: six points apiece in first place, still with seven points
- 30:51Speaker 3: with Prody Henderson.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Question nine. The topic is conservation and this next great
- 30:57Speaker 2: question is via Leland hard They two of the five
- 31:01Speaker 2: states with the most acres of military owned land.
- 31:05Speaker 1: O goodness.
- 31:08Speaker 2: This is question nine. The topic is conservation, named two
- 31:11Speaker 2: of the five states with the most acres of military
- 31:15Speaker 2: owned land. Brody has a one point lead. Right now,
- 31:23Speaker 2: Randall has already come up with his answers. Randall, do
- 31:26Speaker 2: you like your answers?
- 31:28Speaker 1: Feel pretty good?
- 31:29Speaker 2: Two of the five states, feel pretty good?
- 31:37Speaker 1: Brody?
- 31:37Speaker 2: How many answers do you ever written?
- 31:38Speaker 6: Dout?
- 31:38Speaker 1: One?
- 31:39Speaker 2: Okay? Two of the five states with the most acres
- 31:46Speaker 2: of military owned land. Randall is wearing his Ohio State
- 31:51Speaker 2: University shirt today. He declared it's the same shirt he
- 31:55Speaker 2: was wearing last night, which he decorated with a little chili.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Yes, just minor droplets down by the waist on the
- 32:03Speaker 1: front side. Things didn't get that crazy.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Oh it's terrible.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Yeah, man, me and Lebron were celebrating pretty hard last night.
- 32:14Speaker 1: He was on the TV. I was just watching it.
- 32:16Speaker 1: But uh huh in the world, yep, the.
- 32:21Speaker 4: He was wearing an interesting Uh it's like an Araq
- 32:24Speaker 4: almost Did you notice that?
- 32:26Speaker 2: What that that piece?
- 32:28Speaker 4: What's that?
- 32:28Speaker 2: What does that mean?
- 32:29Speaker 4: What is an in.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Parka with this typically doesn't zip all the way down.
- 32:36Speaker 1: It's like a quarter zip.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Was he in a box and he was wearing that.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Well, but it wasn't a It wasn't an insulated in Iraq.
- 32:44Speaker 4: It was more of just a shirt waight in Iraq?
- 32:47Speaker 4: But uh, yeah, I noticed.
- 32:49Speaker 2: It, Yanni, with a lot of thoughts on fashion. I noticed.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I bet Savannah picked it out for him. Who's that
- 32:57Speaker 1: his wife, She's got a real fashion sense. M or
- 33:01Speaker 1: Zuri his daughter Jesus, who is Maximus and Ron James Junior.
- 33:11Speaker 2: How are we doing over here? Brody keep talking? Okay,
- 33:15Speaker 2: he wants wants.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Arizona fans are going crazy right now because they just
- 33:21Speaker 1: secured Bryce locked him up. It's exciting Arizona.
- 33:28Speaker 2: What Arizona wild Wildcats their basketball team? And name two
- 33:35Speaker 2: of the five states with the most acres of military
- 33:37Speaker 2: owned land. Is everybody ready? Go ahead? And we have
- 33:45Speaker 2: sat saying Nevada, New Mexico. Giannis says Wisconsin, North Carolina,
- 33:50Speaker 2: Cordy says Texas, Nevada, Randall says Nevada, California. Hansi says Nevada,
- 33:58Speaker 2: New Mexico. Tresa says Florida, California. Brody crossed out Wyoming
- 34:05Speaker 2: and he went with New Mexico and Alaska. The five
- 34:10Speaker 2: states are New Mexico, California, Nevada, Arizona, and Alaska. God,
- 34:19Speaker 2: there was a groan when it was revealed that Brody
- 34:22Speaker 2: got that one right. He correctly chose Alaska instead of Wyoming.
- 34:27Speaker 2: New Mexico has nearly four million acres of military owned land,
- 34:31Speaker 2: which is the most in the United States. The other
- 34:34Speaker 2: states in the top ten are Utah, Texas, Washington, Florida,
- 34:38Speaker 2: and Georgia. Through the Sikes Act, the Departments of Interior
- 34:42Speaker 2: and Defense are obligated to work together to manage natural
- 34:46Speaker 2: resources on military land, and thanks to the Angle Act,
- 34:49Speaker 2: hunting and fishing became legal on some of the bases.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Bell give us another scoreboard update before we do the
- 34:57Speaker 2: final question.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yes, it's down to Brody and Randall. Brody has eight,
- 35:03Speaker 3: Randall has seven, but Jannison Hanse have six points.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Apiece, It's nothing to stick your nose up at nice
- 35:09Speaker 4: showing Hansei that.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Last minute adjustment.
- 35:12Speaker 6: We missed our question about cypressco a little fishing is
- 35:15Speaker 6: that would have been a little review on that.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Now here is a correct answer. Review so far. One
- 35:20Speaker 2: was Christmas, Two was Stout three, Swarovski four, Idaho five,
- 35:27Speaker 2: Rattlesnake six, Grizzly Adams seven, Lake Effect eight, Fennel. Nine
- 35:34Speaker 2: was New Mexico, California, Nevada, Arizona, and Alaska. Here's question ten.
- 35:40Speaker 2: The topic is fishing. The US Forest Service defines this
- 35:45Speaker 2: six letter word as quote the shallower, faster moving sections
- 35:50Speaker 2: of a stream where rocks break the water surface. Brody,
- 35:55Speaker 2: confident wrote down his answer, seems as though he has
- 36:00Speaker 2: won the game.
- 36:01Speaker 3: How often did you use this word when you were
- 36:03Speaker 3: a fishing guide, Brody?
- 36:05Speaker 7: Quite often, you think so.
- 36:10Speaker 2: The US Forest Service defines this six letter word as
- 36:14Speaker 2: the shallower, faster moving sections of a stream where rocks
- 36:18Speaker 2: break the water surface. If I may, okay.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Uh, it's it asks. It says sections plural.
- 36:32Speaker 2: It's not. The answer is not plural.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Okay, let's just check.
- 36:39Speaker 2: The US Forest Service defines this six letter word as
- 36:43Speaker 2: the shallower, faster moving sections of a stream where rocks
- 36:47Speaker 2: break the water surface.
- 36:49Speaker 1: What percentage of your question tens are in the category
- 36:53Speaker 1: of fishing?
- 36:54Speaker 2: I don't know. Does it seem seems like it?
- 36:59Speaker 7: Spencer and I talk about that the night before the game.
- 37:01Speaker 1: It's always anticlimactic.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I brought this up a couple of weeks. It's like,
- 37:05Speaker 1: it's like we get to question nine, I need to
- 37:07Speaker 1: get one on Brody, and then it's the categories fishing.
- 37:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to look into this.
- 37:14Speaker 3: It's noticeable. It happens a lot.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks Phil.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I'm going to review some scripts now and try to
- 37:19Speaker 2: get back to you on that one to be.
- 37:22Speaker 7: Fair change first, or I'll ask questions it creates be.
- 37:27Speaker 1: More interesting to me. It would be more interesting to
- 37:30Speaker 1: me if it.
- 37:31Speaker 7: Sounds like you're saying, it's like is everybody?
- 37:36Speaker 4: I agree the last question should be broad, it should
- 37:39Speaker 4: be but difficult.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I also, I also don't want to make it where
- 37:45Speaker 2: every question ten is where you're like, Okay, I know
- 37:48Speaker 2: this is a tough one, so the answer wouldn't be
- 37:51Speaker 2: like too obvious. No, I understand that I have people
- 37:54Speaker 2: have made that request before, but I don't want to
- 37:55Speaker 2: stack the game in a way that you can like
- 37:58Speaker 2: sort of predict the difficult.
- 38:00Speaker 7: To you, you're doing a great job.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Thank you, Brody. I go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 38:05Speaker 2: We have seth saying wrapped rapid uh Giannis says riffle, Corey, riffle, Randall, riffle, Hansei, riffle.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Tressa says nervous. Brody says riffle. The correct answer is riffle.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Most streams have a basic pattern that's explained by the
- 38:25Speaker 2: riffle pool run sequence. Riffles are the shallowest, fastest moving
- 38:29Speaker 2: parts of a waterway. They create pools by carving out
- 38:32Speaker 2: the bottom and sides of the stream. Then after that
- 38:35Speaker 2: comes a run where the water is deep like a
- 38:37Speaker 2: pool and fast like a riffle that makes Brody our
- 38:41Speaker 2: winner with nine correct answers. Congratulations, Brody. What do you
- 38:46Speaker 2: want to do with your five hundred dollars donation today?
- 38:49Speaker 8: I get since we got a new administration coming in
- 38:53Speaker 8: that always throws like conservation and public access stuff like
- 38:58Speaker 8: things change, so we need a group that can work
- 39:02Speaker 8: with the new administration.
- 39:03Speaker 2: So we'll go with the TRCP. Brody sending five hundred
- 39:07Speaker 2: dollars to TRCP. Join us next week for more meat
- 39:11Speaker 2: Eater trivia on the game show where conservation always wins.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Thanks Spencer, Thank.
- 39:16Speaker 10: You, Yes Spencer from South Dakota. He's the host, using
- 39:21Speaker 10: those smooth mellow tones. He lays them questions down. He
- 39:31Speaker 10: likes taking those two and three year old bucks. It
- 39:35Speaker 10: is an avid amateur
