- 1:29Speaker 4: Now today's show, I have a unique opportunity to speak
- 1:34Speaker 4: to a former Viking teammate, and I have to say
- 1:38Speaker 4: he's a friend as well, but he's also a twenty
- 1:42Speaker 4: twenty four NFL Hall of Fame nominee. Henry Thomas Hank
- 1:47Speaker 4: as I know him, was drafted in the third round
- 1:50Speaker 4: from LSU in nineteen eighty seven, and he made an
- 1:54Speaker 4: immediate impact with the Vikings as nose tackle in his
- 1:58Speaker 4: rookie season. He played with the Vikings from nineteen eighty
- 2:01Speaker 4: seven to nineteen ninety four, then he would go on
- 2:04Speaker 4: to play with the Lions from ninety five to ninety six.
- 2:07Speaker 4: He finished his career with the New England Patriots from
- 2:11Speaker 4: nineteen ninety seven to two thousand, after fourteen with after
- 2:14Speaker 4: a fourteen year career, okay, fourteen year career in the NFL,
- 2:19Speaker 4: he finished his career with ninety three and a half
- 2:22Speaker 4: socks and over a thousand tackles. I'm gonna that's gonna
- 2:26Speaker 4: be questionable. I'm gonna ask a little bit about that
- 2:28Speaker 4: when I get him on their so let me bring
- 2:32Speaker 4: in right now Henry Thomas, and you'll hear me call
- 2:36Speaker 4: him Hank from here on out, probably because I can't
- 2:39Speaker 4: help it, Hank, happy to have you on the show, man,
- 2:42Speaker 4: what's going on?
- 2:44Speaker 5: Hey, I'm happy to be on the show. That was.
- 2:46Speaker 5: That was a pretty good introduction. Many Well, you know what,
- 2:52Speaker 5: you left some stuff out started for fourteen years. You know,
- 2:57Speaker 5: I was a starter for all fourteen years playing career.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Uh yeah, it was at least a couple of years
- 3:03Speaker 5: in row, I had over hundred castles.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I mean, I'm surprised, ladies, ladies and gentlemen.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Again, just so I can take you back, we Hank
- 3:17Speaker 4: and I played in Minnesota together. We also, believe it
- 3:20Speaker 4: or not, we we had our We had a show
- 3:23Speaker 4: there that we were doing every week. I don't know
- 3:27Speaker 4: how long we did that show, Hank, but but we
- 3:31Speaker 4: have a unique relationship which is basically bringing each other
- 3:36Speaker 4: down or trying not to give them their their proper due.
- 3:39Speaker 4: But because he's going to be on the show and
- 3:42Speaker 4: a lot of people here in West Virginia, I want
- 3:44Speaker 4: to make sure that I give him his props. But
- 3:46Speaker 4: one of the things you won't have to worry about,
- 3:48Speaker 4: he will not shy away from giving himself his props.
- 3:51Speaker 4: So all right, so Hank, here's here's here's one of
- 3:54Speaker 4: my first questions. And I want to touch I want
- 3:58Speaker 4: to touch on the Hall of Fame, the emotions of
- 4:03Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame when you heard, when you first
- 4:06Speaker 4: heard about it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: What what did that feel like for.
- 4:11Speaker 4: The for the public who ends up hearing about the
- 4:14Speaker 4: person who's in or may not know all the people
- 4:17Speaker 4: who get nominated, what is that feeling like?
- 4:22Speaker 5: Uh, well, you were there with me the first time
- 4:24Speaker 5: up and I nominated. I've been nominated maybe three weeks
- 4:29Speaker 5: before and had no idea until someone what We're at
- 4:33Speaker 5: a uh an appearance together and someone was saying, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 5: Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame, and I was like, okay, cool,
- 4:39Speaker 5: yeah one day soon. And then when he actually introduced
- 4:42Speaker 5: me as a Hall of Fame nominee, I was like,
- 4:46Speaker 5: come on, bird, you're taking the jagon real far here
- 4:49Speaker 5: and no, and he put the phone now and showed me.
- 4:52Speaker 5: And that's when I had to turn to you and said, look, man,
- 4:54Speaker 5: I can't hang with you no mo.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 4: I think that was the day that our friendship kind
- 5:02Speaker 4: of we had a little bit of a divide in
- 5:04Speaker 4: our friendship because I was I wasn't a Hall of
- 5:07Speaker 4: Famer and you were a nominee, So that separated us
- 5:10Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Was the feeling for it was it was outstanding and
- 5:16Speaker 5: to see it and then to actually look at the
- 5:20Speaker 5: list of defensive but I was going against rationally knew
- 5:24Speaker 5: that maybe the next nominee I might have gonna shot,
- 5:28Speaker 5: but it was it was still as honor and just
- 5:32Speaker 5: really really excited to be even you know, I'm in
- 5:36Speaker 5: the game. I'm in the game so that my name
- 5:38Speaker 5: is in those the in the thralls of being possibly
- 5:44Speaker 5: considered as a Hall of Famer, and you.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Know, and again i'm I'm I'm on a serious note,
- 5:51Speaker 4: I'm obviously I could be very biased because I played
- 5:55Speaker 4: behind Hank and and we had a relationship the deal line,
- 6:00Speaker 4: which was a great one. Chris Dowman was on that
- 6:03Speaker 4: D line, Keith Mallard was on that D line, Al Noga,
- 6:07Speaker 4: a whole host of other people. At one point, I
- 6:09Speaker 4: think Johnny Randall joined that group. And so it was
- 6:15Speaker 4: it was it was clear to me how good our
- 6:19Speaker 4: D line was. It was clear to me because at
- 6:22Speaker 4: the end of the day, while a lot of names
- 6:24Speaker 4: were being thrown out. Back in those days, Hank was
- 6:29Speaker 4: the guy who was kind of doing the lining up,
- 6:31Speaker 4: getting everybody lined up, making the calls and to and
- 6:36Speaker 4: and what happens is you don't see that. People don't
- 6:39Speaker 4: know that. And to me, when you when you told
- 6:43Speaker 4: me that you had been nominated, you know, I was,
- 6:46Speaker 4: I was proud, you know, like I was like thinking
- 6:48Speaker 4: to myself, you know, because I know I'm not going
- 6:52Speaker 4: I know I'm not gonna get nominated. It's just it's
- 6:54Speaker 4: just not in in in my in my space. But
- 6:59Speaker 4: I really did. I was as excited as you were.
- 7:03Speaker 4: And I and I really felt like this was this
- 7:06Speaker 4: was for sure deserving. And again I'm hoping that it
- 7:10Speaker 4: is going to come to pass. But you're making a
- 7:13Speaker 4: case for some of the some of the names, and
- 7:15Speaker 4: I want you to get some of those names that
- 7:16Speaker 4: are on there because I'm going to make the I'm
- 7:19Speaker 4: going to challenge those names and say, hmmm, I don't
- 7:22Speaker 4: know if they were better than you.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Well, I mean there were there were names on that
- 7:26Speaker 5: like the Julius Pepper's, the scene, the you know, those
- 7:31Speaker 5: guys in their old life did something special for me.
- 7:35Speaker 5: I'll give you white Pean. You know, d White Seenie.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I had to privily just coaching him a little bit
- 7:41Speaker 5: when I was did some internship with Tony Gungeye and
- 7:45Speaker 5: John Chierley in uh Indianapolis, that kind of thing. Uh,
- 7:51Speaker 5: those guys were, like I said, it was, it was
- 7:54Speaker 5: just amazing to see that I was in that company.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Even though those guys are hey, yonger than I am.
- 8:00Speaker 5: It was still, uh, it was an honor. It's still
- 8:04Speaker 5: it still is an honor because you know, I think
- 8:06Speaker 5: I'm gonna get some search made with that Hall of.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Fame, because because everybody might not know, and you want
- 8:15Speaker 4: to make sure that everybody knows.
- 8:18Speaker 5: No, not nothing across the sleeve. You know right there,
- 8:23Speaker 5: you were stupid man.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Well, okay, so let's I want to switch a little
- 8:28Speaker 4: bit and ask you today's game from from from your view,
- 8:36Speaker 4: because I've talked to a lot of former players just
- 8:39Speaker 4: you know, either back in Minnesota or you know, some
- 8:41Speaker 4: of the trips that we take to Wisconsin or North Dakota.
- 8:46Speaker 4: You know, I feel like everybody's in the consame consensus
- 8:51Speaker 4: of the game is different.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It doesn't really look the same.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I think our game during the time that we were
- 8:59Speaker 4: playing in and I'm curious of what you think it
- 9:02Speaker 4: was a it was and maybe maybe this is not.
- 9:06Speaker 4: It doesn't justify it. But I know that safety has
- 9:10Speaker 4: become an issue. But I think back in our day
- 9:13Speaker 4: when I don't know, safety was the key component. I think,
- 9:16Speaker 4: you know, the physicality was the was the key thing.
- 9:21Speaker 4: When you look at the game, you see new linemen,
- 9:26Speaker 4: you know, you see the kind of the handcuffs that
- 9:28Speaker 4: are put on them by hitting the quarterback. What do
- 9:30Speaker 4: you think when you look at that?
- 9:33Speaker 5: Well, when I look at the game now, it's it's
- 9:36Speaker 5: an evolution the game. Everything, nothing is ever gonna stay,
- 9:40Speaker 5: it's the same, It's gonna be an evolution. Is Like
- 9:43Speaker 5: you said, the physical part of our game was the
- 9:47Speaker 5: focal focal point for when we played the game. But
- 9:51Speaker 5: because of that, the way we played the game and
- 9:55Speaker 5: the way we enjoyed the game, we lost or we
- 9:59Speaker 5: saw other people in our era that possibly didn't come
- 10:04Speaker 5: out as well as you and I did, you know,
- 10:07Speaker 5: because of the physicalness of it. So they had to
- 10:10Speaker 5: make some adjustments and some changes to the game. But
- 10:17Speaker 5: when you get into the actual plan of the game
- 10:20Speaker 5: with things that are different on you know, if we
- 10:25Speaker 5: played a game and we had seventy five snaps as
- 10:29Speaker 5: a defensive unit. It was for certain, unless I was hurt,
- 10:33Speaker 5: I took seventy snaps. There was not a rotation or
- 10:40Speaker 5: our group was that that was so conscious of how
- 10:44Speaker 5: many players, what are they doing? And I think it's
- 10:47Speaker 5: because of some of the the deterioration of players before
- 10:54Speaker 5: them that they tried to eliminate that for future players.
- 10:59Speaker 5: But the way of the game has changed as far
- 11:01Speaker 5: as taking some of the physical you know, the way
- 11:05Speaker 5: they handcoff me from you know, bumping a quarterback or
- 11:10Speaker 5: giving them a little job, that's the one. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 5: that's something to do with guaranting the just for those quarterbacks.
- 11:17Speaker 5: You know they were had that you know stiver smooth
- 11:21Speaker 5: that you know they have that mantle that they're all
- 11:24Speaker 5: knock them down a bit, but not in a malicious way,
- 11:27Speaker 5: but feel fun. But the game has changed, and being older,
- 11:33Speaker 5: I can look at it and see, well where and
- 11:37Speaker 5: what the attempt is to make something that is so
- 11:43Speaker 5: violent safe as well. It's like trying to make the
- 11:48Speaker 5: Gladiator game safe, you know sport, and you can't. You
- 11:54Speaker 5: can't try to. You can critique it a turb it
- 11:58Speaker 5: a little, but you can't cut it out and then
- 12:01Speaker 5: you lose the whole premise of the game.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And see and I kind of I kind of feel
- 12:07Speaker 4: like we're at the I feel like we're really close
- 12:11Speaker 4: to doing that because I don't know, because to me
- 12:19Speaker 4: that when I look at when I look at the
- 12:20Speaker 4: secondary and I watch guys play and I and just
- 12:25Speaker 4: looking at them tackle, I mean, it's it looks horrible
- 12:29Speaker 4: to me.
- 12:30Speaker 5: You know.
- 12:30Speaker 4: It's like like like when I look at the secondary
- 12:33Speaker 4: and and and and I can't say everybody, but yeah,
- 12:37Speaker 4: you know, I watched corners try to tackle and it's
- 12:39Speaker 4: like they're not like they're trying to just not get hurt.
- 12:43Speaker 2: A lot of times.
- 12:44Speaker 5: That was in my opinion, even when I played, That's
- 12:48Speaker 5: the way I thought about the corners eating house.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I've got sure the quarters that you had were were
- 13:00Speaker 4: that way. But you know, but what whatever, you know,
- 13:03Speaker 4: call it as you will.
- 13:06Speaker 2: So tell me, tell me. I want to. I want
- 13:09Speaker 2: to go back.
- 13:10Speaker 5: I want to.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I want to come back.
- 13:11Speaker 4: You coming into the league, there's Chris Dowman, who's who's
- 13:15Speaker 4: passed away. There's Keith Millard there, Al Noga's there. You
- 13:20Speaker 4: come in as a nose guard or nose tackle, I
- 13:24Speaker 4: should say, And and we had some years with that group.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Well, yeah, Al came in later after me. Yeah, when
- 13:33Speaker 5: I when I came in with Doug Martin, Yeah, Doug Martin.
- 13:37Speaker 4: A couple of other There was a couple of other
- 13:40Speaker 4: guys there too that had that I think the breakers
- 13:42Speaker 4: that brought, yes, the the creation of our defense to
- 13:50Speaker 4: what to the eighty seven season, eighty six eighty seven season, Yeah,
- 13:56Speaker 4: the d line was totally amazing and talented. Can you
- 14:05Speaker 4: can you give can you give the audience a kind
- 14:08Speaker 4: of a snapshot of what each one of the players,
- 14:12Speaker 4: because each one, each one of our players were going
- 14:15Speaker 4: forward trying to make have the most socks. You know,
- 14:19Speaker 4: they were going to be one or two, one or three,
- 14:21Speaker 4: they were going to be in those top three. Tell
- 14:24Speaker 4: me how that how those players competed and how they
- 14:29Speaker 4: competed against each other more so than anybody else in
- 14:33Speaker 4: the league. Not to say there was another great pass rushers,
- 14:37Speaker 4: but our guys were just amazing.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Well, coming into the to the Vikings as a as
- 14:44Speaker 5: a rookie, you know, I was fortunate enough to have
- 14:49Speaker 5: played for a great technician teacher in Pete Jenkins when
- 14:55Speaker 5: I was at LSU and not even knowing it, but
- 14:58Speaker 5: absorbing so much from him. And when I got to
- 15:02Speaker 5: the Minnesota Viking, there were there were some lapses that
- 15:08Speaker 5: I was that I that I had become accustomed to doing,
- 15:13Speaker 5: like Rell wise, what I needed to make me better
- 15:16Speaker 5: for this week I learned from Coach Jenkin at LSU.
- 15:21Speaker 5: When I brought it to Minnesota, and I didn't get it,
- 15:24Speaker 5: I just went and got it on my own. We
- 15:26Speaker 5: had a unique group where Chris Doman and keep my
- 15:34Speaker 5: Lard and myself became fast friends because Keith was not
- 15:38Speaker 5: I mean, Chris was not certain about putting his hand
- 15:43Speaker 5: in the dirt. He was a stand up about the guy.
- 15:46Speaker 5: And it was like, look, man, you got some speed,
- 15:48Speaker 5: but your hip saint turned and you can't cover them.
- 15:51Speaker 5: But somebody, Yeah, exactly. And I was telling him all
- 15:58Speaker 5: the time from on, put your hand in the dirt.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Let me see you how to have fun here. And
- 16:03Speaker 5: Chris picked up from that with Krit, with Keith and myself,
- 16:08Speaker 5: And like I said, I came from a you know,
- 16:13Speaker 5: very technical how to play a game because but this
- 16:17Speaker 5: is probably the only time you're gonna ever hear me
- 16:19Speaker 5: say this, and I hope they're not recarding it. But
- 16:22Speaker 5: I wasn't the greatest athletics people that were there. I
- 16:26Speaker 5: have my quickness, my feet, I have some athleticism. But
- 16:30Speaker 5: what in looking back at my game would make my
- 16:33Speaker 5: game different and better than any other note tackle at
- 16:36Speaker 5: that time was I was a technician. I mean hand placement,
- 16:41Speaker 5: how to explode, how to read the block. Those are
- 16:44Speaker 5: the things I studied. I wasn't the strongest factored guy
- 16:48Speaker 5: out on the field. But you know, I watched film
- 16:52Speaker 5: my studies like, oh, they're in that far eye formation
- 16:55Speaker 5: and that type of doing emotion. I know they running
- 16:57Speaker 5: the dive at me. Here we go, bring it on,
- 17:00Speaker 5: Come on, I'm not but I know it permits. You
- 17:03Speaker 5: know you're not gonna surprise me. That kind of that
- 17:07Speaker 5: was my play and has a group. I brought that
- 17:10Speaker 5: part in. Keith and and Chris had so much explosive
- 17:16Speaker 5: talent off the ball, and Keith and Keith was so
- 17:20Speaker 5: explosive in the three technique because I mean, at that point,
- 17:25Speaker 5: whoever heard of six five six six three techniques?
- 17:29Speaker 2: Right right?
- 17:30Speaker 5: But he was there getting off on the ball. And
- 17:33Speaker 5: what made us great was I was learning about the NFL.
- 17:38Speaker 5: All the sacks and all that. Keith was already a
- 17:40Speaker 5: part of it. Godman was just learning the joy of
- 17:45Speaker 5: actually being the defensive then as opposed an outside linebackers,
- 17:50Speaker 5: and we just bonded over what I could bring, what
- 17:55Speaker 5: they saw. And then when you're throwing deud Martin's veteran
- 18:00Speaker 5: leadership on right, I mean, we just had a great group.
- 18:04Speaker 5: And then when Doug Lee's and and Noble comes in
- 18:07Speaker 5: and he's just hungry to be successful, it just made us.
- 18:11Speaker 5: We competed in a group like the year. One year
- 18:17Speaker 5: we had seventy something sacks and the defensive line had
- 18:22Speaker 5: sixty of them, and we all we never competed like
- 18:28Speaker 5: against one another. We've wanted more than that guy got
- 18:31Speaker 5: as a group, but has a unit. We wanted to
- 18:34Speaker 5: be the best. We wanted We always said we wanted
- 18:38Speaker 5: to set the standard. When every ever, every other team
- 18:42Speaker 5: in the NFL look at defensive linemen, we wanted to
- 18:45Speaker 5: be the standard they were shooting them be so period.
- 18:49Speaker 4: So when you go back, when you when you look
- 18:52Speaker 4: at the Purple people leaders and and that and that legacy,
- 18:58Speaker 4: where now do you do you feel like that group,
- 19:02Speaker 4: your group, where do they sit.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Where do you you know, because because I.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Can most people now who don't, who are not old
- 19:12Speaker 4: enough to know the people the Purple People leaders, all right,
- 19:16Speaker 4: when they think about the Minnesota Vikings and they think
- 19:20Speaker 4: about the defensive line, I to my to me, I'm
- 19:24Speaker 4: thinking they're thinking that group right there.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Well, when you think of the Purple People, we sit
- 19:30Speaker 5: as as my group were, we sit very a very
- 19:35Speaker 5: comfortable close second behind those because those guys revolutionize. Yes,
- 19:42Speaker 5: they made it difference than anybody else the way they
- 19:46Speaker 5: played the game, and back then everybody wanted to beat it.
- 19:53Speaker 5: No one wanted to give the Purple People. The guys
- 19:56Speaker 5: up front, they're just dudes. They always a attributed the
- 20:01Speaker 5: success that they had because they were a customer playing
- 20:04Speaker 5: in the cold weather. But they will kick your butt
- 20:07Speaker 5: no better way you were cold or not.
- 20:10Speaker 2: You know, it didn't make any difference.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Okay, So you you you're putting our group your d
- 20:19Speaker 4: line second?
- 20:21Speaker 2: Which which is which is fair?
- 20:25Speaker 5: Yeah? Rankings, those guys, those guys inspired us to be
- 20:30Speaker 5: what we were, and I believe we took what they
- 20:35Speaker 5: did and took it to another level where every other
- 20:39Speaker 5: team in the league wanted to play the way we played.
- 20:43Speaker 5: But there were those that said, oh, they don't play
- 20:46Speaker 5: with any discipline insight, Oh we're disciplined. We're disciplining kicking
- 20:51Speaker 5: them crap out of your offen line.
- 20:54Speaker 4: But but I think I think part of that, don't
- 20:57Speaker 4: you think that comes with the scheme. I mean, we
- 20:59Speaker 4: were saying, man the man, and you guys are just
- 21:01Speaker 4: going it could it could have looked like, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 4: playground ball, but everybody had a role, and everybody in
- 21:11Speaker 4: that everybody in I mean we had like everybody that
- 21:15Speaker 4: was in a spot was perfect for the spot.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Well that's exactly right. When people look at us and said, oh,
- 21:24Speaker 5: their defensive line is just running up the field there, Uh,
- 21:28Speaker 5: they're only doing that because they got those guys in
- 21:31Speaker 5: the back that can play man coverage. Uh, but you
- 21:36Speaker 5: guys played man coverage because we could run up the
- 21:38Speaker 5: field because we know how to get the pressure on
- 21:41Speaker 5: the guy.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Right, and and and and and to to anybody who
- 21:45Speaker 4: is a football coach, anybody who is a d lineman
- 21:50Speaker 4: or defensive back or linebacker, hear what he's saying, because
- 21:54Speaker 4: at the end of the day, the defense, there's no
- 21:59Speaker 4: I can't I can't get interceptions, I can't knock balls down.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I can't be a pro bowler.
- 22:05Speaker 4: I can't be all of those kinds of things if
- 22:07Speaker 4: I don't have some guys up front that can put pressure.
- 22:12Speaker 2: And we and and and and Hank.
- 22:15Speaker 4: I can remember a number of times you guys turning
- 22:17Speaker 4: around saying, hey, just hold them just a little bit longer.
- 22:20Speaker 2: We're almost there, you know.
- 22:22Speaker 4: I remember those saying it a zillion times, keep saying
- 22:26Speaker 4: it always so. And we were like, Okay, we're right,
- 22:29Speaker 4: we're trying, we're trying. And we didn't have a problem.
- 22:33Speaker 4: We never had a problem of a distinction of the
- 22:37Speaker 4: need that you had for that other position.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think that I.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Think that's a critical piece of having a good defense
- 22:46Speaker 4: is that you don't break up. You have to stay connected.
- 22:49Speaker 4: You have to realize, as a dB, you need everybody
- 22:52Speaker 4: that's in front of you to play well. If you're upfront,
- 22:56Speaker 4: you need everybody in the background to play good. And
- 22:58Speaker 4: if you can get that as a whole, that's a
- 23:01Speaker 4: good football team. That's a good defensive football team.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Well. The thing about it, too, that people don't get
- 23:08Speaker 5: when they try to say that we were undisciplined, we
- 23:11Speaker 5: were done this we're that you can't say it. You
- 23:15Speaker 5: can say it and show examples of where they're undisciplined,
- 23:19Speaker 5: but in each one of those years, you can't. The
- 23:24Speaker 5: fact don't line up because this group was always one
- 23:29Speaker 5: two in defense. They're the top in the top three
- 23:34Speaker 5: tiers every year. Defense that's not undisciplined, that's that's playing excited,
- 23:42Speaker 5: put together defensive football.
- 23:44Speaker 2: How many? How many?
- 23:45Speaker 4: How many people that we put in the Pro Bowl
- 23:47Speaker 4: in eighty seven?
- 23:49Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, I mean it was a lot and
- 23:55Speaker 5: a lot because I was I remember that was my
- 23:57Speaker 5: rookie year, and I was like, there's none of the
- 24:00Speaker 5: guys that are in there at the at the topic
- 24:03Speaker 5: you can you have numbers better than me. What what
- 24:06Speaker 5: what's happening?
- 24:07Speaker 2: Right right?
- 24:09Speaker 5: We put eighty seven and eighty eight, eighty nine, We
- 24:11Speaker 5: put a ton of people in the Pro.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Bowls and and and again, part of that to me.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Is coaches, you know, coaches knowing what your guys can do.
- 24:27Speaker 4: I mean, you had Floyd Peters, I had Pete Carroll.
- 24:32Speaker 4: And everybody may not know Floyd Peters, but and you
- 24:36Speaker 4: can and you can, and you can talk about him
- 24:38Speaker 4: because because he deserves his due. But in the secondary,
- 24:42Speaker 4: you know, learning how to play man to man. I'm
- 24:44Speaker 4: learning that from now what we know the best probably
- 24:49Speaker 4: the best defense about.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Coach in history exactly.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Okay, So as good as I thought I was, I
- 24:57Speaker 4: learned it from a coach that tied it to so
- 25:01Speaker 4: many other I don't think he ever tied it to
- 25:04Speaker 4: anybody who did not have success.
- 25:07Speaker 2: So you got to kind of blame that on the coach.
- 25:10Speaker 5: You gotta bless him everywhere he went, everywhere he.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Went, Yes, and and and and so again a lot
- 25:18Speaker 4: of people don't know the name Floyd Peters, but give
- 25:22Speaker 4: give them a description of how you how if you
- 25:26Speaker 4: were going to introduce him, how would you introduce him?
- 25:29Speaker 2: Because Floyd was a different kind of character.
- 25:32Speaker 4: I don't know if parents like he could never be
- 25:34Speaker 4: a high school coach, and maybe not even a college coach.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Because you do something wrong, you're gonna hear.
- 25:44Speaker 5: He's gonna let you know. And the thing about when
- 25:47Speaker 5: we played for Floyd, Floyd had a a very good
- 25:52Speaker 5: understanding of what he wanted to see out of his defense,
- 25:57Speaker 5: how his defense was supposed to look, and what was
- 26:00Speaker 5: you know, Because I honestly believed that I got the
- 26:05Speaker 5: starting job two weeks into the training camp because they
- 26:09Speaker 5: had no intentions of making me the starter. But if
- 26:13Speaker 5: you remember that rookie year, Tim Newton came in a
- 26:21Speaker 5: little bit, he came in a little heavy that year,
- 26:26Speaker 5: and to give him a little slap on the wrist,
- 26:30Speaker 5: throw that rookie in there. Well, that rookie could play and.
- 26:37Speaker 2: And and hold up.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Let me let me clarify that to the folks, like
- 26:41Speaker 4: Tim Newton was a great player. Yeah, but there was
- 26:45Speaker 4: an expectation of weight and you needed to come back in,
- 26:51Speaker 4: you needed to come in at a certain weight. They
- 26:53Speaker 4: had to wait for him to come in at and
- 26:57Speaker 4: he did not come in at the proper weight, And
- 27:01Speaker 4: all of a sudden, what happens is they're like, okay,
- 27:03Speaker 4: we're gonna go.
- 27:04Speaker 2: We'll go with the rookie.
- 27:07Speaker 5: So they put me in to give him a little
- 27:09Speaker 5: slap on the wrist to say, hey, you need to
- 27:11Speaker 5: will play this rookie. But it was the second day
- 27:15Speaker 5: of me being the starter because they had no intentions
- 27:19Speaker 5: of me being the snart. They just wanted to get
- 27:21Speaker 5: him motivated. But I'll never forget. We had a blitz
- 27:26Speaker 5: call the tight end. Steve Jordan gets up whitchy side
- 27:33Speaker 5: the strict team, and I'm over there biting my lip
- 27:36Speaker 5: till it bleeds because I know I'm already study. We
- 27:40Speaker 5: got an Omaha out of this blitz, and the veteran
- 27:46Speaker 5: linebacker Studwell is not saying it, and I yell out Omaha,
- 27:51Speaker 5: Omaha and Studwell and I get into it because I'm
- 27:56Speaker 5: not supposed to be making no calls. And Floyd comes
- 28:00Speaker 5: and you're a rookie and I'm a rookie and come
- 28:04Speaker 5: in and says Son, he's right, we gotta get out
- 28:07Speaker 5: of there if we can't, you know. And I think
- 28:10Speaker 5: that was the day I became a starter for real,
- 28:15Speaker 5: for real, for real, because I knew I studied. It
- 28:20Speaker 5: was my my My My role into Minnesota was let me,
- 28:27Speaker 5: I'll take it back to my draft day. It's me.
- 28:32Speaker 5: Two other guys had signed with the same agent. These
- 28:37Speaker 5: two guys were both from A and M. I think
- 28:41Speaker 5: it was Roger Vick and Johnny Holland, Yes, from Green Bay.
- 28:49Speaker 5: We partied. We hung out together that whole week, just
- 28:56Speaker 5: having a great time in Houston. Draft Day, Come first round,
- 29:03Speaker 5: Jet picked Roger Vick, running back, phone rings, Oh clean,
- 29:10Speaker 5: come on up. Press conference, blah blah blah blah, he's
- 29:13Speaker 5: gone second round. Come around, phone rings, Johnie Holland, Green
- 29:20Speaker 5: Bay Prince comperence, Come on up, we're gon having the
- 29:23Speaker 5: blah blah blah, he's gone, third round. Comes on, it's
- 29:29Speaker 5: shut the coverage cut off. I'm sitting around there by
- 29:34Speaker 5: my fist now like I'm gonna go home. Then the
- 29:39Speaker 5: phone rings, Minnesota vics you, Jashie blond Vihans. I get
- 29:46Speaker 5: on the phone, man.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Like who called you?
- 29:48Speaker 5: Who called you?
- 29:49Speaker 2: Who called you?
- 29:51Speaker 5: Jerry Burns, Burnsy, Okay, Bernsy call and so I'm waiting
- 29:56Speaker 5: for the come on French conference. Blah blah blahn at
- 30:00Speaker 5: mini camp. So when I go to minicamp, this is
- 30:04Speaker 5: how a here because I was I think that was
- 30:07Speaker 5: the last and in the third round.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Pick All right, hold that thought right there. We're going
- 30:12Speaker 2: to take a quick break and we'll come right back. Okay,
- 30:14Speaker 2: so hold your thought down.

- 31:15Speaker 3: Now back through the conversation.
- 31:17Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back from the break,
- 31:20Speaker 4: and I have my buddy and former teammate, Henry Hank
- 31:24Speaker 4: Thomas on the on the show today, and uh, Hank,
- 31:30Speaker 4: pick up from where you left off right.
- 31:33Speaker 5: A lot of problem. I came in, like I said,
- 31:36Speaker 5: I came in I was I think it was. I
- 31:38Speaker 5: might've been the last player picked in the third round.
- 31:40Speaker 5: But the coverage, it's first time they had coverage and
- 31:43Speaker 5: nobody flew out to New York or nowhere wherever they
- 31:47Speaker 5: were having they were that So the Jerry Burst call,
- 31:53Speaker 5: they put me on a call with him. I'm like, oh,
- 31:55Speaker 5: I'm excited. I can't wait for me. And I'm thinking
- 31:59Speaker 5: there's gonna be a accomplience like the other guys know,
- 32:02Speaker 5: we'll see you at mini camp. So I was like, okay, great,
- 32:05Speaker 5: I show up at mini camp. There's nobody there to
- 32:10Speaker 5: pick me up at the airport. You know, I'm looking
- 32:13Speaker 5: for guys. It's not hard to sell Henry Toomas. I'm
- 32:18Speaker 5: looking for a guy with a car. There's Henry Tomas,
- 32:23Speaker 5: and I'm looking all over for it and I don't
- 32:25Speaker 5: see it. I'm looking for stuff to see, Miniesota biking.
- 32:29Speaker 5: I see a lot of DAP with all the fans
- 32:33Speaker 5: people walking around, but nothing that says you need to
- 32:37Speaker 5: come with us. So I'm standing on the corner and
- 32:40Speaker 5: I said, Caddy, that's right. There was no ubers back then.
- 32:44Speaker 5: There's no cell phones back then. Don't judge me. People.
- 32:47Speaker 5: You're old.
- 32:49Speaker 2: You're old.
- 32:50Speaker 5: I'm old. I remember when that was not cell phone
- 32:53Speaker 5: so stop it and no internet anyway. So I walk
- 32:59Speaker 5: up to the cab and anybody who knows me knows
- 33:03Speaker 5: anything about me. I am probably the biggest Prince fan.
- 33:10Speaker 5: And the cab I said, and all I knew about
- 33:14Speaker 5: Minnesota was Prince. So the cabby said, where do you
- 33:19Speaker 5: want to go? I said, well, how far is First Avenue?
- 33:24Speaker 5: He says, just downtown. You can come on, I'll take you.
- 33:27Speaker 5: He takes me to the first Avenue. The door is open,
- 33:31Speaker 5: and let me explain to people First Avenue used to
- 33:34Speaker 5: be a bus depot before it became a club, and
- 33:41Speaker 5: that there was a door on the side that was
- 33:43Speaker 5: open where the guy stopped and I kind of peeked
- 33:45Speaker 5: in and somebody said, hey, what are you doing? And
- 33:48Speaker 5: I was like, oh, I'm Minnesota Vikings and I was
- 33:52Speaker 5: just peaking, you know, I'm fan of them. And he goes, well,
- 33:54Speaker 5: co on in, let me say you round, show me around,
- 33:57Speaker 5: tell me the things. Come back out the cabin still
- 33:59Speaker 5: there looking at me, he was like, where do you
- 34:01Speaker 5: want to go? I said, do you know where the
- 34:03Speaker 5: Vikings practice? Because yeah, I went apart. I'll take me,
- 34:06Speaker 5: takes me down there and I'll never forget because that
- 34:09Speaker 5: day I had a hundred and thirty three dollars in
- 34:13Speaker 5: my pocket.
- 34:14Speaker 2: You probably spent all that out.
- 34:16Speaker 5: It was. It was seventy three bucks, and I gave
- 34:20Speaker 5: him eighty five dollars. And when I walked into the building,
- 34:25Speaker 5: the first person I see is Jerry Burns, and he
- 34:30Speaker 5: lit into me. What the hell have you been? Olah?
- 34:34Speaker 5: Practice is going ruh around. You stepped right round and
- 34:37Speaker 5: I was like, oh, there was nobody there to pick
- 34:39Speaker 5: me up. I don't know. I had to take a cab.
- 34:42Speaker 5: You know, you took the cab. I was like yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 5: And I handed in my receipt and he saw that
- 34:46Speaker 5: eighty five bucks and he goes, what are you stupid?
- 34:51Speaker 5: And I was like what, I don't know where I
- 34:53Speaker 5: was going because you know, the guy charged me for
- 34:55Speaker 5: the whole round.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Tick absolutely and the time you wait, he was waiting
- 34:59Speaker 2: on you.
- 35:00Speaker 5: And look and he turned and he took the receipt.
- 35:03Speaker 5: You know, he looks at the receiver. He goes, maybe
- 35:06Speaker 5: five dollars, What are you stupid? And he turns to
- 35:09Speaker 5: the secretary and goes, make sure he gets his money.
- 35:12Speaker 5: Get your so and some downstairs and get to your
- 35:15Speaker 5: meetings and that and that meeting is where they handed
- 35:20Speaker 5: me a yellow three ring binder with the defensive stuff
- 35:28Speaker 5: in it. And that afternoon I took that binder, opened
- 35:33Speaker 5: it up and toppied all the pages for the defensive
- 35:37Speaker 5: line stuff and the blitches, and I put it in
- 35:40Speaker 5: my bag. And from that week of training camp until
- 35:44Speaker 5: we which was in May, till we came back in August,
- 35:50Speaker 5: I studied all that. I mean, I had my mom
- 35:53Speaker 5: in the driveway being the line by just saying by that,
- 35:56Speaker 5: I think he went the wrong way. I think what
- 35:58Speaker 5: you say it say Rama, but you're supposed to go
- 36:01Speaker 5: that way. I mean, I study there, Okay, okay, I
- 36:05Speaker 5: got when I got the training camp, that first two
- 36:09Speaker 5: weeks of installation, man, I was like nothing to me.
- 36:12Speaker 5: I hadn't so it looked like I would changed some quickly,
- 36:16Speaker 5: but I just.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Okay, okay. So I want to switch. I want to
- 36:21Speaker 4: switch gears because I want to switch to that that
- 36:26Speaker 4: piece of learning, the playbook, learning what to do, working
- 36:32Speaker 4: out to to do. You know, know what the calls,
- 36:36Speaker 4: know when the call is coming, what you're supposed to do,
- 36:40Speaker 4: Knowing how to make that call, knowing the deep knowing
- 36:43Speaker 4: the offense, knowing the strength, knowing all that kind of stuff.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Because for for all the players, high school players, collegiate players,
- 36:52Speaker 4: middle school players, youth players, and your parents, what you
- 36:58Speaker 4: have to understand if your goal is to be a
- 37:01Speaker 4: D one football player, if your goal is to play
- 37:05Speaker 4: an to be an NFL player, you need to understand
- 37:11Speaker 4: that if you thought algebra, algebra two, geometry, all that
- 37:17Speaker 4: kind of stuff was difficult, football without study, without studying,
- 37:25Speaker 4: is virtually impossible.
- 37:27Speaker 2: As you go up the ladder and.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Explain and again, terminology formations, all of those kinds of things.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Those things matter.
- 37:40Speaker 5: You have to know.
- 37:42Speaker 4: You have to know right now if this guy moves,
- 37:45Speaker 4: you're gonna do this. You can't wait or think somebody's
- 37:48Speaker 4: gonna tell you. They may tell you, but you got
- 37:51Speaker 4: to know that stuff on your own.
- 37:53Speaker 2: That's what I think.
- 37:55Speaker 4: That piece, the physical piece of being in shape and
- 38:00Speaker 4: the mental piece that comes with playing D one ball.
- 38:05Speaker 4: And I'm not saying it's not there for D two
- 38:08Speaker 4: or any of that, but basically to play football, to
- 38:12Speaker 4: learn it. When you get away from you know, the
- 38:16Speaker 4: simplicity of it, you're talking about stuff that makes no sense.
- 38:20Speaker 4: You know, you could get a call, you may be
- 38:23Speaker 4: able to give us a call, Hank. I don't know
- 38:24Speaker 4: if I can remember all the calls, but if you
- 38:26Speaker 4: give me a.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Call, like you got to know all that?
- 38:31Speaker 5: Well, yeah, you have to know all that because the
- 38:34Speaker 5: thing that helped me a lot with understanding what you
- 38:39Speaker 5: were doing, what I was doing, and what the offense
- 38:43Speaker 5: is doing. Yes, because so many teams when we broke
- 38:47Speaker 5: down film. In my mind, when I break a film down,
- 38:52Speaker 5: like if this, okay, here's their favorite formation, let's say
- 38:56Speaker 5: is strong strong eyes left or whatever. Let's say it's
- 39:04Speaker 5: strong eye. My thing was how many players do have
- 39:10Speaker 5: they run out of this? And what are their top
- 39:13Speaker 5: three plays? Okay, let's go to far eye. How many
- 39:20Speaker 5: plays have they run out of this and one of
- 39:22Speaker 5: their top three planes? So once I get there, when
- 39:28Speaker 5: I see a wrinkle to it, you can't beat me.
- 39:32Speaker 5: I know where you're going. I haven't and I'm not
- 39:36Speaker 5: gonna cheat to that, but you're not gonna beat.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Me to that either, Okay.
- 39:40Speaker 4: And here, So for me playing corner, my film study
- 39:46Speaker 4: was really simple. I wanted to know what routes you
- 39:50Speaker 4: ran and what routes you didn't run, because if you
- 39:53Speaker 4: didn't run a route. If you haven't run a post corner,
- 39:56Speaker 4: I'm not worried about it. If you look like you
- 39:58Speaker 4: running the post, you running the post because you ain't
- 40:01Speaker 4: never run a postcorner.
- 40:02Speaker 2: If you run that post corner, you got me.
- 40:05Speaker 5: Wow.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Yeah and once exactly. And so the study for me
- 40:11Speaker 4: was just to try to figure out what routes do
- 40:13Speaker 4: they not run? Because now I know if you take
- 40:17Speaker 4: an outside release, there's only there's only a few routes
- 40:20Speaker 4: you can run. You run a takeoff, come back, that's
- 40:22Speaker 4: about or just maybe an out. But in most cases
- 40:26Speaker 4: you got to get inside to run a curl, you
- 40:28Speaker 4: got to get inside to run an in. You got
- 40:30Speaker 4: all that kind of stuffs. And then now that made
- 40:33Speaker 4: it so simple to me playing man to man that
- 40:37Speaker 4: I wasn't. All I needed to do was try to
- 40:39Speaker 4: figure out where you started wherever you're going to release.
- 40:45Speaker 4: I already know where you're going.
- 40:48Speaker 5: Okay, see their lives for us, what the studying of
- 40:55Speaker 5: film is because as you remember, on Friday was a
- 41:01Speaker 5: short day for us. But the d line after practice
- 41:06Speaker 5: we always met as a group. We find one another
- 41:10Speaker 5: for low miss tackles, we find each terman, we find
- 41:14Speaker 5: our decency line group in six packs of beer. You
- 41:21Speaker 5: got two low lasts last week, you old a twin pack.
- 41:25Speaker 5: You had a misstackle. You old this. So when privately came,
- 41:29Speaker 5: we got on the practice around one, but the d
- 41:32Speaker 5: line never left until about three because we would go
- 41:36Speaker 5: and you know that beer that we we test ourselves,
- 41:40Speaker 5: We would drink and watch them. I mean we would
- 41:43Speaker 5: go so far into requesting requesting the uh, the network
- 41:49Speaker 5: coverage of the games, just so we can get a
- 41:53Speaker 5: rhythm of the caten that kind of thing.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Do you remember, do you remember the committee?
- 42:00Speaker 4: We'd have the committee meetings where where and what the
- 42:05Speaker 4: committee was was it was a group of players that
- 42:08Speaker 4: would evaluate each player and if you if you didn't
- 42:14Speaker 4: do well, you didn't play well, you made some mistakes.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Basically you had to buy all the.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Drinks that night, and and and and you couldn't and
- 42:27Speaker 4: and no matter what anybody said about your play that week.
- 42:30Speaker 4: So like if Hank were to say, caral Man, you
- 42:32Speaker 4: ain't give us nothing this week, I mean, you just
- 42:34Speaker 4: didn't do nothing. You you might as well have not
- 42:37Speaker 4: even been out there. I'm getting if I get mad
- 42:39Speaker 4: at Hank. And now we're gonna start talk about trying
- 42:42Speaker 4: to go to blows. I got to beat up the.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Whole crew, right, you know.
- 42:47Speaker 4: And that's when you when you when you think about
- 42:51Speaker 4: a team, when you think about the expectations of your
- 42:56Speaker 4: the expectations that your teammates have for you, right, that
- 43:01Speaker 4: speaks volumes because I knew. I knew that there's no
- 43:06Speaker 4: way that Hagen's not gonna be in the game. There's
- 43:08Speaker 4: no way he's not gonna make place. There's no way
- 43:10Speaker 4: those not gonna make place, no way Mile's not gonna
- 43:13Speaker 4: make place. And that's gonna help me. So I can't
- 43:17Speaker 4: afford one of them not to be at their best
- 43:20Speaker 4: because now if they're not at their best, I can't.
- 43:24Speaker 5: Play right well. The thing about it is, too, is
- 43:28Speaker 5: that I think our group had from all the other
- 43:32Speaker 5: groups that I played with, because I'm I'm not that
- 43:38Speaker 5: regardless of what Carl says, I'm not that big. First god,
- 43:43Speaker 5: oh my god, what are you saying?
- 43:46Speaker 2: What are you saying?
- 43:49Speaker 5: But in the group, in the group when I was
- 43:52Speaker 5: in Minnesota, the thing was when somebody said something about
- 43:58Speaker 5: your play, you got anger, but you kept that anger
- 44:03Speaker 5: in and you use that anger to correct even if
- 44:09Speaker 5: you disagreed. Yes, you've had you had to go back
- 44:14Speaker 5: and actual actually look to see and if you if
- 44:19Speaker 5: you weren't right, it's like, hey, I don't see what
- 44:22Speaker 5: you're saying. Show me here. You can go and see it.
- 44:25Speaker 5: But you've curbed that anger enough to make yourself and
- 44:30Speaker 5: at least evaluate your own place in the mirror to yourself.
- 44:36Speaker 5: And that that held everyone untremble in our group.
- 44:42Speaker 2: And I think, I think parents and I think young
- 44:46Speaker 2: kids today.
- 44:47Speaker 4: You have to be honest with yourself because you may
- 44:51Speaker 4: not or a parent has to be honest with the child.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Child has to be honest with the parent. And you
- 44:55Speaker 4: got to say, am I putting in the work I'm
- 44:59Speaker 4: talking about I want to play college ball. I talk
- 45:01Speaker 4: about I want to be a great high school player.
- 45:03Speaker 4: I want to be a great middle school player. What
- 45:06Speaker 4: work are you putting in? Because at the end of
- 45:10Speaker 4: the day, the work that you put in is going
- 45:14Speaker 4: to get you the results that you want. You can
- 45:17Speaker 4: talk about I can talk about Pro Bowl all day long, right,
- 45:21Speaker 4: but I got I got to put work in in
- 45:24Speaker 4: order to do that. And the one thing I can think,
- 45:29Speaker 4: I don't know of any of our top players through
- 45:34Speaker 4: that eighty seven eighty eight or yes, I don't think
- 45:41Speaker 4: any of those guys ever came to camp out of shape.
- 45:48Speaker 5: I'll give you. Let me sum up our eighty seven
- 45:51Speaker 5: year in a nutshell, our eighty seven year.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Let me say this. Let me just say this.
- 45:59Speaker 4: I have another motive behind the eighty seven year two.
- 46:03Speaker 4: But I'm curious to see why.
- 46:04Speaker 2: What you say?
- 46:05Speaker 5: First, Okay, here it is we get locked out by
- 46:10Speaker 5: the owners, and I'm a rookie, so I don't know
- 46:13Speaker 5: any better. I'm gonna get my money. And that group
- 46:17Speaker 5: was like, no, you're not gonna be a scaff player,
- 46:20Speaker 5: and you're gonna stay here with them as a group
- 46:24Speaker 5: at least three times a week. And we were locked
- 46:28Speaker 5: out for four weeks out of leave at least three
- 46:32Speaker 5: times a week, we met as a team in practiced
- 46:37Speaker 5: by ourselves, by ourselves. That summed up our eighty seven
- 46:44Speaker 5: playoff run right there.
- 46:47Speaker 4: Okay, so, and I'm one agree with that. Here was
- 46:53Speaker 4: here was the other thing? So really, so my point's
- 46:56Speaker 4: not really the eighty seven season. Mine's gonna be the
- 47:00Speaker 4: eighty eight season, I guess, because what was interesting to
- 47:05Speaker 4: me was all the players whose contract was up that year.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Do you remember that like, So when eighty seven came
- 47:16Speaker 2: around or eight.
- 47:18Speaker 5: I signed the one year deal as rookie because I
- 47:21Speaker 5: couldn't get but you know, like I said, nobody cared
- 47:25Speaker 5: for what the what the hell I was going to do?
- 47:27Speaker 5: And here I am was a rookie. I started all
- 47:30Speaker 5: the whole season.
- 47:32Speaker 4: And and you and you probably had some kind of incentive,
- 47:35Speaker 4: some kind of number of plays, number of quarters.
- 47:39Speaker 5: No, no, no that, none of that, and no idea
- 47:42Speaker 5: that that was. That was the first aging. He was
- 47:45Speaker 5: just out all about the novel second agent. Oh yeah,
- 47:51Speaker 5: it was.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Good then, yeah, yeah, and see and and and what
- 47:55Speaker 4: was interesting to me was that everybody was out trying
- 47:58Speaker 4: to get their money. And so from eighty seven to
- 48:02Speaker 4: eighty eight, in that eighty eight year off season of
- 48:06Speaker 4: eighty seven or even during the season, trying to get signed,
- 48:12Speaker 4: you know, with Mike Linn, was was really a super
- 48:17Speaker 4: challenge to get a dollar from him. You know, I
- 48:22Speaker 4: felt like I felt like there was a there was
- 48:26Speaker 4: an opportunity to divide the team because everybody, everybody thought
- 48:32Speaker 4: that they should be high paid, they should be paid,
- 48:35Speaker 4: and didn't nobody want to.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Be the last the low guy on the pay scale.
- 48:40Speaker 4: You know, because I mean, think about that team, for
- 48:43Speaker 4: everybody played well, right, and now you gotta sign all
- 48:48Speaker 4: of those guys. Basically almost and I truly think Hank
- 48:53Speaker 4: that there was the whole entire defense had to been up.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Up for contract.
- 49:00Speaker 5: My years an a one year deal because I was
- 49:06Speaker 5: up there.
- 49:06Speaker 2: I was up, I was in. I was in a
- 49:09Speaker 2: an option year.
- 49:11Speaker 5: So see, well as you look at it, back then,
- 49:16Speaker 5: the auction year was just another way of the hand company. Yes,
- 49:20Speaker 5: because there was no options.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, what was the option exactly?
- 49:25Speaker 5: There was no option? Is like, well, we're on the option. Well,
- 49:28Speaker 5: even then, let's say I played so well as a rookie,
- 49:34Speaker 5: I can't get a contract done. I was not allowed
- 49:38Speaker 5: to go to another team.
- 49:40Speaker 4: Yeah, all those things where those opportunities did not exist
- 49:46Speaker 4: at all back then.
- 49:48Speaker 5: Those are the things that that's another part of the
- 49:52Speaker 5: evolution of the game. I talk about. We we fought
- 49:56Speaker 5: so hard for it, even when I didn't understand it.
- 49:59Speaker 5: I follow the lead of the veteran guys.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Say that again, Say that again, because that's that's important.
- 50:07Speaker 5: I followed the lead of the veteran guys. That's something
- 50:11Speaker 5: you do not have anymore in the NFL. Because if
- 50:18Speaker 5: you take I played for fourteen years for three different teams,
- 50:22Speaker 5: it takes all of my contracts, and I had a
- 50:26Speaker 5: decent contract, Adam all up will not equate to one
- 50:32Speaker 5: of a contract of a guy you know today four
- 50:35Speaker 5: year guys by your guys today, it will not equate today.
- 50:40Speaker 5: But that's the evolution of the game. But had to
- 50:43Speaker 5: gave me evolved. It's lost something in veteran leadership because
- 50:49Speaker 5: a veteran nowage was seven years, eight years.
- 50:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean when we you know, I came in
- 50:55Speaker 4: and there was you know, Fred McNeil, Matt Blair. Those
- 51:00Speaker 4: guys were hangovers from a purple people leaders because I
- 51:06Speaker 4: want to say, shoot, those guys probably had what eleven, twelve,
- 51:11Speaker 4: thirteen years Matt. I don't know how long Matt played,
- 51:16Speaker 4: but those guys had been there for a long time
- 51:19Speaker 4: and they were when they would say something, you would
- 51:22Speaker 4: do it.
- 51:22Speaker 2: There's not a cour there's no question.
- 51:24Speaker 4: And you the reality hang too of if they tell
- 51:29Speaker 4: you to go do something, you ain't asking them why,
- 51:32Speaker 4: you ain't challenging them.
- 51:34Speaker 2: You're not talking about I'm a grown man. I'm not
- 51:36Speaker 2: doing that. You gonna you gonna you you would do
- 51:40Speaker 2: that out of respect.
- 51:43Speaker 4: And I think and I think that piece of it
- 51:46Speaker 4: is gone because I'm you know, today, if I'm drafted,
- 51:49Speaker 4: I'm drafted first round, second round, third round. You know
- 51:52Speaker 4: I'm getting super money. I'm getting guaranteed super money. I'm
- 51:56Speaker 4: coming in like I'm the dude.
- 51:59Speaker 5: Well, and a think about that is nowadays you leave
- 52:03Speaker 5: in college, you know.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you'd have made a couple of meal. You'd have
- 52:08Speaker 2: made a couple of meal.
- 52:09Speaker 5: You made a couple of meal. And if you're if
- 52:11Speaker 5: you're somebody that's gonna be just and how mem already? Yeah?
- 52:18Speaker 2: Yeah, how do you? How does that player?
- 52:20Speaker 4: How does that player come in and and gonna listen
- 52:25Speaker 4: to me and you as veterans, Why is he gonna
- 52:27Speaker 4: listen to us?
- 52:28Speaker 5: He don't need us exactly.
- 52:31Speaker 4: But but but back in the day, that was, that
- 52:35Speaker 4: was law in order, and and and when Bud was there,
- 52:38Speaker 4: but when when bet, when Bud was there, that was that.
- 52:43Speaker 4: I dare you to act like you're not gonna listen.
- 52:45Speaker 2: To a vet.
- 52:47Speaker 4: Oh yeah, oh yeah, you you ain't you You're not
- 52:50Speaker 4: gonna make the team. I don't care who you are, well,
- 52:52Speaker 4: how good you are? If a VET tells you to
- 52:55Speaker 4: do something, and you know how they used to do.
- 52:57Speaker 4: You know, I don't want to call it hazing, but
- 52:59Speaker 4: you know you'd have take their helmets and shoulder pads
- 53:01Speaker 4: and carry them in or whatever.
- 53:03Speaker 2: If if if they wanted, if they gave you the
- 53:06Speaker 2: helmet told you to carry it in, you better carry
- 53:09Speaker 2: it in. Okay, Well, now I'll say this.
- 53:16Speaker 4: As it got forward, as those guys were loyal to it,
- 53:21Speaker 4: I wasn't necessarily loyal to it because I wasn't interested
- 53:25Speaker 4: in trying to make anybody do anything anyway. I didn't
- 53:28Speaker 4: like doing anything, so I wasn't gonna put that on
- 53:31Speaker 4: somebody else. Again, that's the evolution of that, that happening
- 53:36Speaker 4: and not happening.
- 53:37Speaker 5: How the game changed, right, It's like like at that point,
- 53:43Speaker 5: I always carried Doug Money pass with my pads. But
- 53:50Speaker 5: as a rookie, you know, I wanted to make a team,
- 53:55Speaker 5: so I did all I heard. So I got on.
- 53:58Speaker 5: I was put on the point with turn and the
- 54:00Speaker 5: kickoff team. Okay, one practice, everybody's hurt. So now I'm
- 54:09Speaker 5: studying those happens. But I'm a rookie, so that means
- 54:13Speaker 5: I have to do the scout team stuff more. Than offense.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Yep, I know all about that, dude.
- 54:21Speaker 5: Kickoff and kickoff and put return always seemed to be
- 54:24Speaker 5: on the same shrinking day.
- 54:31Speaker 2: To do all that running, I had to do it.
- 54:33Speaker 5: I was right there with you, and that that day
- 54:37Speaker 5: everybody hurt. So I got to do everything. And after
- 54:41Speaker 5: practice we got to run gassers. And for those who
- 54:45Speaker 5: years who don't know what a gasser is, that's when
- 54:47Speaker 5: you from across the field, you run across the field,
- 54:51Speaker 5: touch across the field, touch across the field, touch and back.
- 54:57Speaker 5: And that it was a time limit that you had
- 55:02Speaker 5: to do that. So you always had three of those
- 55:06Speaker 5: after practice. And after a particular practice, everybody was hurt
- 55:10Speaker 5: on the befense except me. I said a pull something
- 55:14Speaker 5: up faked the injury. But I was young and green
- 55:16Speaker 5: didn't know any better. And there was another guy who
- 55:21Speaker 5: had been on the team for four or five years,
- 55:23Speaker 5: never started play all of ten or twelve players, don't
- 55:28Speaker 5: know why he's still on the team, told me to
- 55:31Speaker 5: carry his pads.
- 55:33Speaker 2: I know who you're talking about.
- 55:36Speaker 5: Yeah, we played the same we played both play d line,
- 55:39Speaker 5: and so my response to him was to kick his
- 55:44Speaker 5: hands as hard as I hear this one, as I said,
- 55:49Speaker 5: and we get to row bo.
- 55:51Speaker 2: See that, you know, see that?
- 55:52Speaker 4: See that's the bad that would that's the bad thing
- 55:55Speaker 4: man is is like you gotta be you gotta know,
- 55:59Speaker 4: like you gotta know who you're going to try to
- 56:01Speaker 4: You know who you're gonna and I'll just call it hazy,
- 56:03Speaker 4: who you're gonna try to hate? Who you gonna try
- 56:05Speaker 4: to get to carry your pads? Come on, you can't
- 56:08Speaker 4: if you don't. And I know, like I said, I
- 56:10Speaker 4: know exactly who you're talking about, you know, And and
- 56:13Speaker 4: come on, man, bro, you got to carry your own pass.
- 56:16Speaker 5: You've been on the team for four to five years.
- 56:22Speaker 5: I've been on the team for all of twelve days
- 56:25Speaker 5: and I'm the starter and you're gonna tell me to
- 56:28Speaker 5: carry your time? That that was? That was? That was?
- 56:41Speaker 4: That's you know those stories there are are really the
- 56:45Speaker 4: interesting pieces to.
- 56:47Speaker 2: The ego of of an athlete that's on a ProTeam.
- 56:52Speaker 5: Well see that. That's another thing. There's this fine line
- 56:56Speaker 5: between fun saving and bullying. Yes, yes, his was.
- 57:02Speaker 2: His was more like a bully.
- 57:05Speaker 5: Yeah, And I was not after all that, I was
- 57:10Speaker 5: not in the move, moved for it, and I never
- 57:14Speaker 5: forget Floyd Peters being Floyd Peterson saying you got that
- 57:20Speaker 5: much in fighting.
- 57:27Speaker 4: So so we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna,
- 57:29Speaker 4: we're gonna wrap We're gonna wrap it up here in
- 57:32Speaker 4: just a second. But what I want, what I want
- 57:34Speaker 4: from you, Hank, is two, if there's the athlete or
- 57:39Speaker 4: the parent that's out there that's that that's that's wanting
- 57:42Speaker 4: to be good, wanting to ultimately get to that that
- 57:48Speaker 4: D one level, wants to maybe play professional professional sports,
- 57:52Speaker 4: because it doesn't really make any difference because everything to
- 57:56Speaker 4: get to the professional level, everything is requires the same
- 57:59Speaker 4: time type of thing. So give those folks because I've
- 58:04Speaker 4: said it a thousand times and I'm just I'm curious
- 58:07Speaker 4: that how you may say it, and then we'll wrap
- 58:09Speaker 4: this up.
- 58:11Speaker 5: All right for me to be If you want to
- 58:15Speaker 5: be that top athlete, first and foremost, you got to
- 58:20Speaker 5: enjoy it. If it's work. Anytime you leave the house
- 58:24Speaker 5: to go lift weight and it seems like work. Anytime
- 58:28Speaker 5: you leave the house to go run or do sprints
- 58:32Speaker 5: in the stadium or the thing, it feels like work.
- 58:36Speaker 5: It doesn't feel like fun. It's just something that you do.
- 58:40Speaker 5: You're going to have a problem if you can't. If
- 58:44Speaker 5: it feels like work and it's not enjoyable, you're not
- 58:47Speaker 5: going to put in the time and an effort that
- 58:50Speaker 5: it's required to conferience what you want. If you put it,
- 58:55Speaker 5: if you get the same Okay, let me take that back,
- 58:59Speaker 5: not the same joy, because I didn't get the same
- 59:01Speaker 5: joy out of running. When I went and ran, there
- 59:05Speaker 5: was a joy there. There was something I was looking
- 59:07Speaker 5: forward to do with it, even though in my mind
- 59:10Speaker 5: back then I didn't quit it back to that I
- 59:14Speaker 5: was getting ready for the things I did in NFL,
- 59:19Speaker 5: but it was a part of something that I enjoyed doing.
- 59:22Speaker 5: If you don't put in the work, and you don't
- 59:26Speaker 5: find joy in putting in the work, you're not gonna
- 59:30Speaker 5: accomplish the things that you want to do, and you're
- 59:33Speaker 5: gonna get to the point where you're gonna if you
- 59:36Speaker 5: put in the work and it seemed like a grind
- 59:41Speaker 5: or actual work, when you get to that almost to
- 59:46Speaker 5: that threshold, you're gonna have a breakdown. You're gonna lose it.
- 59:51Speaker 5: Enjoy was doing and work hard at it. That's all
- 59:55Speaker 5: I got to say about it.
- 59:56Speaker 4: And I'll and I'll say this. I know working out myself.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: When I worked out getting ready for camp like, it
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: wasn't hard. It wasn't hard to go to get up
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: early in the morning and do it because I knew
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: I had to do it. Because I knew somebody was
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: gonna be coming into the Vikings, to Marshall, to South
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: Charleston High School that that was gonna want to play
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: my position.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and I didn't have I was.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Not gonna take that.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: I was not gonna take that chance to give somebody
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: a chance to be in better shape than I was.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: I wanted to be in the best shape of anybody
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: that was that was possible.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: On the team that that was That was my goal.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: But that ladies and gentlemen, I hope that you can
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: take that take that bit of advice from Hank and uh, Hank.
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: I truly do appreciate you coming on, man, and I'm
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: sure we'll do it again, so I do.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: I do truly appreciate you. Man.
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: Hey, anytime you need me come in and fill in
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: and do something, Yeah, you want me to sit in
