- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to mini scroll
- 0:22everyone. OK, I actually have a bit of an
- 0:24exciting update for you guys to anyone who has been on the whole
- 0:28journey with us through mini, like if you guys have listened
- 0:31from the beginning or even if you listened from like when I
- 0:33had my Co host Geordie with me and it was like a totally
- 0:36different podcast basically we didn't have mini scroll yet.
- 0:39You will remember the journey of recording the podcast at my
- 0:42house to then get in this office.
- 0:45We tried so many different setups like this is a curtain
- 0:47because behind this wall or behind this curtain is a wall
- 0:50that is like brick and it has, I don't know, it's like teal.
- 0:53It's like a dark teal. It's so ugly.
- 0:56There are some videos on YouTube, it looks, it actually
- 0:59looks fine in person, but like on camera it looks really bad.
- 1:01There are some videos on YouTube of me recording the podcast with
- 1:04that. And then people would be like,
- 1:05can you please cover up that disgusting splotchy wall?
- 1:10And I'm like, OK. And then I tried recording it
- 1:12over there with some sheer curtains.
- 1:14Anyways, we landed on this setup and it's like done as well.
- 1:17But the office is so small that whenever we need to record, we
- 1:20have to set everything back up every single day, right?
- 1:24We have to set it back up. And then we have to take it all
- 1:26down so that we can work in the office at the desks.
- 1:29And like, when I need to record, the girls have to leave and vice
- 1:33versa. So it's been such a startup
- 1:35vibe, but I'm so excited because I've been like trying to figure
- 1:38out what our next move is in terms of space.
- 1:40We absolutely need more space for 2026.
- 1:43And obviously, being a podcast network now, we need to be able
- 1:46to have the capability to have more people in this office, like
- 1:50more guests can come on our podcast at once, right?
- 1:53And all of that. So anyways, that was a big
- 1:55priority for me the last couple of months.
- 1:57And I'm really excited because we actually just signed our new
- 2:00office space. So we're going to be moving
- 2:02technically, November 1st is like when we get possession,
- 2:05it's still at the Commons. So it's still in our same
- 2:08location that we've been at for over 5 years years now.
- 2:11It's actually wild that I've been at this office for five
- 2:13years. But yeah, so it's still with the
- 2:15Commons, but it's a bigger space.
- 2:17It has a window. I wish we got possession now so
- 2:20I could do a TikTok using Sabrina Carpenter's house tour
- 2:23with the new office because I feel like that would just really
- 2:25hit. And by the time we get it, I
- 2:26think the moment will be over. But it has a huge window that
- 2:30looks outside. And this office has no windows.
- 2:32So that's why it's like a Harry Potter closet, because it's so
- 2:34dark. So I've done what I could to
- 2:37this office to make it the best that I could for the girls and
- 2:41I. But I'm so excited.
- 2:42So it'll have been 18 months in this office.
- 2:44And yeah, we're moving on up. We're getting a bigger space.
- 2:48It's not that much bigger, but it's like bigger enough.
- 2:51Does that make sense? Like, that grammar feels off,
- 2:54you know what I mean? And I'm also happy that I don't
- 2:57have to disrupt our routine that much because we were looking at
- 3:00spaces all over, which obviously would be quite disruptive to
- 3:04like the established commute and, you know, where we get our
- 3:07lunches, where we go to the gym, things like that around the
- 3:10office. So we're staying put.
- 3:11And I'm so happy. I love the comments.
- 3:13They've been so good to us in these five years and I'm so
- 3:16happy we get to stay with them and we get a bigger space and we
- 3:19get a window and yeah, really exciting.
- 3:21So there will be some changes to like, what the podcast looks
- 3:24like starting in November. And hopefully we don't go
- 3:27through as many evolutions of like trying to figure it out,
- 3:30but we'll see. OK, As always, Please remember
- 3:33to rate, review and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 3:36I've noticed a lot of you guys have started Spotify star rating
- 3:39us again. So please, it helps us so much.
- 3:41I am still trying to get to our target of 1000.
- 3:44I was like pushing you guys to get us there.
- 3:46And then I kind of fell off because then I started pushing
- 3:48you guys to subscribe to us on YouTube to get to 10,000 on
- 3:50YouTube. So I fell off on the Spotify
- 3:52star rating, but I'm still trying to get to 1000.
- 3:55We're almost there. Like we're getting there.
- 3:57OK, before I get into the stories for today, I think I do
- 3:59have to acknowledge that easily the biggest story on the
- 4:03Internet today is that somebody shot Charlie Kirk at a
- 4:07university campus event in Utah and he died.
- 4:10He was a very prominent figure in Internet culture.
- 4:13Obviously, I don't support him, but he was undeniably a massive
- 4:18influencer. And at the time of recording,
- 4:21that is all the information that we have so far.
- 4:24It's being extensively covered by mainstream news, so I'm
- 4:27keeping up with the story. I'll keep you guys posted on any
- 4:31like major updates on it. I'm sure all of you guys are
- 4:34keeping up with it to an extent as well because this is a really
- 4:37big moment in Internet culture news.
- 4:39It is absolutely the biggest story on the Internet today.
- 4:42OK. The first story that I have for
- 4:44you guys is that Taylor Frankie Paul has been announced as the
- 4:49new Bachelorette. Now, normally I would probably
- 4:52never cover The Bachelorette. I mean, I guess I've covered it
- 4:55in relation to Gabby Windy and that's probably it.
- 4:58But this is really relevant to us because Taylor Frankie Paul
- 5:02is a TikTok star. And it's also really relevant to
- 5:04me because Taylor Frankie Paul is also the star of Secret Lives
- 5:08of Mormon Wives and I love reality TV and I love that show.
- 5:12So yes, Taylor was originally a really big TikTok star.
- 5:15She's kind of the originator of mom talk, which was the TikTok
- 5:19group of Mormon women who really viral a few years ago.
- 5:23They would film content all together, like dancing and
- 5:25having fun. And, you know, they were so
- 5:27beautiful and skinny and young and everyone was like, how are
- 5:31these moms? Like, how is this mom talk?
- 5:33And then they really shot to fame when they became embroiled
- 5:36in a scandal after Taylor herself went on TikTok live and
- 5:39admitted that she and a bunch of the other mom talk members were
- 5:42involved in soft swinging together where they would
- 5:45essentially hook up with each other's husbands.
- 5:48You guys can read all about like how that came out.
- 5:51It wasn't just her like going rogue.
- 5:53I mean, it was definitely a bit rogue, but like, you know, it
- 5:55was because it was in response to I think there was a couple
- 5:57that was like about to get divorced and online people were
- 6:00questioning like, are these people all still close?
- 6:02And there were feelings getting involved.
- 6:04Like one of the husbands profess their love to Taylor and it all
- 6:07just kind of like fell apart. And so after this drama, then
- 6:12Hulu was like, we need to make a show about this.
- 6:16And they cast Taylor as the lead of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
- 6:20And they actually didn't get the original swingers to join, like
- 6:24aside from Taylor to join the first season because everybody
- 6:26hated Taylor. Like all those women that were
- 6:28involved in it hated Taylor because she exposed their secret
- 6:32to the whole world, which honestly is like, fair enough.
- 6:34Like fair enough that they hated her for that.
- 6:35And then season 2 Miranda, who was part of the original
- 6:39swinging scandal, she did join the cast.
- 6:41So yes, Taylor has now shot to even more fame because the show
- 6:45was so successful. A huge part of Taylor's
- 6:48storyline on the show has been her turbulent relationship with
- 6:52her boyfriend Dakota, who she did recently have a baby with
- 6:54but basically refuses to marry him because he's the worst.
- 6:58And they've been broken up, I guess, like on and off for a
- 7:00while now. It's never fully clear if
- 7:03they're together or not, but Taylor actually recently teased
- 7:07that she was on in a new relationship on her socials.
- 7:10So this announcement of her being the new Bachelorette is
- 7:13kind of a huge shock to fans. Now, fans of the Bachelor
- 7:16franchise are saying that this feels like it marks a pretty
- 7:19clear, like, new chapter for the show and for the franchise, I
- 7:22guess, which has been struggling to maintain relevancy.
- 7:26I've seen a lot of people who are fans of the show say, like,
- 7:29finally, they are not trying to keep up the facade that people
- 7:33are on this for love and they're going to start casting like
- 7:36really famous people if they'll accept it.
- 7:38And it will just kind of be like this reality show that everybody
- 7:42knows. You know, we're just here for
- 7:43clout. I mean, I absolutely think this
- 7:45is a great idea. I do not watch any of the
- 7:47Bachelors, but I'm going to watch this season because Taylor
- 7:50Frankie Paul has such a different type of reach.
- 7:54She's very relevant right now. I mean, I feel like there's a
- 7:57lot of crossover in the audiences for sure between her
- 7:59show and the Bachelor. But regardless, I think
- 8:02especially with the TikTok connection, it's going to open
- 8:04up a whole new kind of audience for the franchise.
- 8:07And I will definitely be watching.
- 8:09OK the next word that I have for you guys is there is a new Gen.
- 8:13Alpha skin care line that has just launched by a big YouTube
- 8:17but it has sparked some concern online and I will get into why.
- 8:22So 15 year old influencer Salish.
- 8:25I think it's Salish or I think it's Salish.
- 8:28I watched her say her name like 5 times.
- 8:30I think it's Salish has launched her own skin care brand targeted
- 8:34at Gen. Alpha.
- 8:35The brand is called Sincerely Yours and was Co launched with
- 8:38her father Jordan Matter and will be run by skin care
- 8:41industry veteran Julia Ross who used to be the CEO of Tula.
- 8:45Jordan is also an influencer like her dad is also an
- 8:48influencer kind of he's like a dad.
- 8:49YouTube who has built a following of over 32,000,000
- 8:54mostly from posting content of his kids, but more on that in a
- 8:58minute. So more than 60,000 teens were
- 9:01involved in creating the brand via a private text message
- 9:05platform sourced by Salish's audience.
- 9:08So the brand launched on September 6th.
- 9:10They had this huge event and there were like thousands and
- 9:14thousands of young kids with their parents there waiting to
- 9:18meet her, to see her at this mall.
- 9:20It was actually like mayhem and they actually went straight into
- 9:24Sephora, which is really interesting because for
- 9:26influencer brands, typically they go direct to consumer to
- 9:30begin with. Now, it's not new that young
- 9:32people, especially young girls want to use like makeup and skin
- 9:35care. You know, that is always been
- 9:37the case. And especially with social media
- 9:39replacing like tween magazines, the role models that they're
- 9:43following and the content that they're consuming as opposed to
- 9:45like a tween magazine, which is telling you in theory, like
- 9:48serving you like more age appropriate stuff.
- 9:51You're watching it. Get ready with me from like a 25
- 9:54year old influencer who lives in New York City that you love and
- 9:57you're like 11 years old and she's using all of this
- 10:00expensive product and product that is probably not even
- 10:03necessarily age appropriate for her skin at the age of 25, but
- 10:07she's using it anyways, worried about anti aging.
- 10:10And so you're trying to buy this stuff.
- 10:11So like the idea of launching A Gen. alpha skin care brand that
- 10:15is like made for younger skin. I think actually is a good idea
- 10:18and I think it makes sense for it to be in Sephora because of
- 10:20course we know the Sephora teen or tween epidemic where all the
- 10:24tweens are going to Sephora, like swatching everything.
- 10:26And just like, it's fun. I get it.
- 10:28Like I used to love to go to the mall when I was young too.
- 10:30OK, Like that's like part of the experience.
- 10:31I get why they launched into Sephora.
- 10:34However, what has been interesting is the brand's
- 10:37launch, especially into Sephora. Like if this was not a Sephora
- 10:41launch, I don't think that this would have reached other
- 10:43audiences. OK, so this brand's launch,
- 10:46especially into Sephora has put quite a spotlight on this father
- 10:50daughter influencer duo and it's opened them up to a much older
- 10:55and different type of audience. An audience that is interested
- 10:58in business news, an audience that is interested in branding
- 11:01and marketing, an audience that is interested in the beauty
- 11:04industry. It's opened her up well beyond
- 11:06the scope of like Jen Alpha and young Jen Zed, interested in her
- 11:10skin care brand. And what that has brought with
- 11:14it is a lot of concern because if you look at the content that
- 11:20is on both of their channels, but especially her dad's
- 11:23channel, her dad has 32,000,000 followers.
- 11:26OK. She herself as the influencer
- 11:28has like 3,000,000 followers, I think on YouTube, still huge.
- 11:31But her dad has 32,000,000. His channel is all about his
- 11:35daughter. And it is like Mr. Beast style,
- 11:39like weird click baby challenge videos about his daughter.
- 11:43There's a lot of splits involved, like his young
- 11:46daughter doing the splits, weird click baby videos about like her
- 11:50dating life. It's creepy.
- 11:53And it's interesting because there are a lot of people in
- 11:57these industries now, like business industries, marketing
- 12:01industries who are covering this on TikTok, talking about this on
- 12:04TikTok. Their eyes have been opened to
- 12:06the world of essentially like parent vloggers.
- 12:10Is anybody else so creeped out by this Sincerely Yours brand
- 12:14that just launched at Sephora for Gen.
- 12:15Alphas? I'm not creeped out for the
- 12:18reasons that you think, but I just looked at the content that
- 12:21is on the father's YouTube channel because this brand is
- 12:25obviously going to do really well at Sephora with Gen.
- 12:27Alpha, and I think it's creepy. Speak.
- 12:29I saw the big Sephora news. No, not the road launch, but
- 12:34rather a 15 year old influencer whose name I had never heard was
- 12:38launching a beauty line with Sephora.
- 12:39All of his content is about her so it's like I'll put some here.
- 12:44My daughter has a crush on this guy.
- 12:46I dug very deep into YouTube, into Reddit.
- 12:50As far as I can tell, Salish's target audience is like 7 years
- 12:55old. Why are you launching a skin
- 12:56care company aimed at 7 year olds?
- 12:59And for me, looking at it from an Internet culture perspective,
- 13:02what I find the most interesting is how niche these conversations
- 13:06still are because we talk about this all the time.
- 13:09If you are entrenched in Internet culture, you are across
- 13:12the like kid influencers, parent vloggers, like all family
- 13:17bloggers, like you are across those conversations.
- 13:19They happen a lot in this specific bubble, but it's really
- 13:23highlighting to me that a lot of these, especially these creators
- 13:25that I follow, like a lot of creators that I follow for like
- 13:28branding, marketing advice, It's fascinating to watch them
- 13:31discover this and to realize how big of a problem this is.
- 13:36I mean, even a personal anecdote, one of my best friends
- 13:40who knows, obviously that I do this for a living, When the
- 13:43Piper Rock Hell documentary came out on Netflix, she messaged me
- 13:47and she was like, Oh my God, have you heard of this girl?
- 13:49Have you seen this? Did you know that this was
- 13:51happening? And I was like, yeah, bro, I
- 13:52have like multiple podcast episodes about things just like
- 13:55that. Like that is a huge problem in
- 13:58specifically like my industry. It's like something that we
- 14:00cover all the time. And I found it so, so
- 14:03interesting. She's literally like one of my
- 14:05best friends. And, you know, we spent so much
- 14:07time together and she just still was completely unaware really of
- 14:12the how big of a problem this is.
- 14:15OK. And the last word that I have
- 14:16for you guys, I hope this brings you some joy because it's so
- 14:212015. It feels so like nostalgic, OK?
- 14:27Jeffree Star has called out James, Charles and Nikki
- 14:31tutorials in some OG beauty community drama.
- 14:36So this is all related to Louis Vuitton's new beauty brand
- 14:39launch Labute with Pat McGrath at the helm as creative
- 14:43director. So this is a description from
- 14:45the business of fashion quote. On Tuesday, fashion house Louis
- 14:49Vuitton unveiled its modern debut makeup collection, Labute
- 14:53Louis Vuitton, designed in partnership with the famed
- 14:55makeup artist Pat McGrath, originally teased in March.
- 14:59The range includes 55 lipsticks and 10 lip balms at $160 each
- 15:06and eight eyeshadow palettes priced at $250 each.
- 15:11OK, so the pricing is steep. Obviously, that was a huge, you
- 15:16know, topic of conversation in the industry when it was first
- 15:19announced. Now a bunch of influencers got
- 15:22PR as usual, and they were doing reviews.
- 15:25But two who didn't get PR were James Charles and Nikki
- 15:29tutorials, both of whom didn't particularly like the
- 15:32collections or at least like rate the collections.
- 15:34So they both essentially said it wasn't worth the price.
- 15:37James said if you can afford the makeup and you want to try it to
- 15:40get a lipstick instead of the eye shadows.
- 15:42And Nikki said she did seem to like one of the palettes, but
- 15:46not the one that she tried on TikTok.
- 15:49She said the pigmentation was just not out there.
- 15:51And then interestingly, I didn't know about this.
- 15:53So this was like interesting tea for me to learn.
- 15:56Nikki also noted that she probably didn't get PR because
- 15:59she said that she and Pat McGrath have like low key beef.
- 16:02She didn't really, I mean, she didn't word it like that, but
- 16:04like that's what she said. OK, so she's never said exactly
- 16:08what happened, but several years ago, Nikki gave one of Pat
- 16:11Mcgrath's makeup products like a not so great review.
- 16:14And then she said in a video after that, like a year or so
- 16:18after that, that a makeup artist, like a US makeup artist
- 16:21snubbed her in person recently at an event.
- 16:23And she heavily implied that it was Pat McGrath.
- 16:26So there were like, Reddit posts about this.
- 16:28Obviously. There were articles about this,
- 16:30about how like Pat McGrath and Nikki tutorials have like low
- 16:33key beef. It's like unconfirmed,
- 16:34obviously, but kind of. So then in this video, she's
- 16:37like, yeah, I mean, when I found out that it was Pat McGrath, I
- 16:39figured that's why I didn't get PR.
- 16:41So anyways, then Jeffrey started a review and he gave a positive
- 16:46review about the makeup, but it was sent to him NPR.
- 16:49So that that made viewers and audiences question his review
- 16:54and think that he was lying. A lot of beauty influencers who
- 16:57got in NPR were saying good things about it.
- 16:58OK, So people immediately thought like, because people
- 17:01have more trust in negative reviews than they do in positive
- 17:04reviews. That is like a known thing among
- 17:06psychology. But also especially if you think
- 17:09about the beauty influencer industry, like how burns we were
- 17:12from OG beauty YouTube. So of course, when we hear that
- 17:15something's given to someone, NPR or there's a brand collab,
- 17:18like you immediately question the validity of their review.
- 17:22So his positive review off the back of Nikki and James's
- 17:26negative reviews caused people to be like, what the fuck?
- 17:29This is obviously a fake review. Like, we don't trust you.
- 17:31And apparently he says he got like a ton of backlash for that,
- 17:35that he woke up to, like, thousands of comments telling
- 17:37him that basically he's a liar. So he went on this like rant,
- 17:41OK, where he was going off like honestly, it's like OG Jeffrey
- 17:46style stuff going off on his audience basically saying he
- 17:51doesn't need to like a shill for a free lipstick.
- 17:55He was like, I bought a $250,000 Louis Vuitton pool table.
- 17:59You think I care about a free lipstick?
- 18:01And then he basically called James and Nikki out in his
- 18:04response. So the topic of discussion is of
- 18:07course the $250 eyeshadow palette.
- 18:10Now I guess Nikki Tutorials and James Charles reviewed the
- 18:13makeup. They bought it themselves.
- 18:14They were not on the PR list. So is it giving Bitter Betty or
- 18:18why am I involved actually respect Nikki Tutorials?
- 18:21But if you hear her in the intro, she said that she
- 18:23reviewed a different Louis palette for her YouTube channel
- 18:27and that one was totally fine with pigment even though it was
- 18:30boring. According to her her it had
- 18:32pigment so she chose to use the lightest color story for TikTok.
- 18:36And now everyone's coming at me like I'm a liar.
- 18:40Woke up to all these comments. Well Nikki and James used it and
- 18:43it didn't and and they didn't have the same experience as you.
- 18:46We're still listening to what James Charles has to say.
- 18:48Someone that admitted to texting minors and then deleted the
- 18:51apology video. You guys are believing someone
- 18:54that likes children. I think we have a bigger issue
- 18:57at hand. I think I'm thoroughly offended
- 18:59that anyone would think I would lie about something to get a
- 19:02free lipstick. No offense, but huh?
- 19:04Nicky and James have not engaged with this as far as I've seen at
- 19:09the time of recording. I don't think they will.
- 19:12I think most people in the beauty industry, beauty
- 19:15influencer industry, steer clear of Jeffrey, especially when he's
- 19:18kind of like inflamed like that. But yes, it's very nostalgic for
- 19:21me. It's actually like the kind of
- 19:23drama that I needed to hear about today, like drama over
- 19:27influencer PR and reviews. Like that's the kind of shit
- 19:30that we need. OK, we need more of that, less
- 19:32like child influencers, more of this.
- 19:37All right, guys, that's it for today.
- 19:38Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
