- 0:00Welcome back to Clone Wars: The Spinoff.
- 0:03It's DJ Universe, and today we're doing something different.
- 0:07This isn't just another episode.
- 0:10This is an introduction.
- 0:12This is an induction.
- 0:14And this is the beginning of a new chapter for the Clone Wars family.
- 0:18I got Dangerous Zygos with me.
- 0:21You already know.
- 0:22Calvin Blingwell is in the building.
- 0:24Present and accounted for.
- 0:25And sitting in that fourth chair for the first time, we have the newest member of
- 0:30the team.
- 0:31Independent recording artist.
- 0:33Producer.
- 0:34Newest addition to the Down By Law Management family.
- 0:38Newest member of the Hip-Hop Hero League.
- 0:41And beginning today, the new fourth host of Clone Wars: The Spinoff.
- 0:46Lil Bennington.
- 0:47Welcome to the Clone Wars.
- 0:49Man, I appreciate that.
- 0:50I'm ready.
- 0:51For me, this is bigger than just getting another platform to talk on.
- 0:55I'm coming here as an artist, but I'm also coming here to learn,
- 0:58build, and bring my perspective into what y'all have already created.
- 1:02See, that's what I want to hear.
- 1:03Because we're not giving you the fourth chair just so you can sit there looking
- 1:07mysterious.
- 1:08There will be homework.
- 1:09I already figured that.
- 1:10Definitely homework.
- 1:12Because Clone Wars has always been about more than entertainment.
- 1:16We're talking about culture.
- 1:17We're talking about ownership.
- 1:19We're talking about financial literacy.
- 1:21We're talking about knowledge of self.
- 1:23We're talking about taking something that starts as creativity and figuring out how
- 1:28you build a real life around it.
- 1:29And ultimately, how you turn art into something bigger than a moment.
- 1:33How do you turn it into legacy?
- 1:35That's the difference between somebody who makes songs and somebody who builds a
- 1:39career.
- 1:40And there's another difference people don't talk about enough.
- 1:43Making money isn't necessarily building wealth.
- 1:46You can make money and spend all of it.
- 1:49You can have a successful year and still own nothing.
- 1:53Generational wealth requires assets, systems, and ownership.
- 1:57Exactly.
- 1:58And that's why Lil Bennington joining us creates an interesting conversation.
- 2:03Because we're dealing with an artist who's already been creating at a serious pace.
- 2:08So now the question becomes: What happens when you put infrastructure behind the
- 2:12creativity?
- 2:14Bennington, let's properly introduce you.
- 2:16Not the social media bio.
- 2:18Not the streaming profile.
- 2:20Who is Lil Bennington?
- 2:22I'm an independent recording artist and producer.
- 2:25My music pulls from alternative rock, rap-rock, nu-metal, and hip-hop,
- 2:30but I don't really want to be trapped inside one genre.
- 2:33The music can get aggressive.
- 2:34It can get melodic.
- 2:35Sometimes it's introspective.
- 2:37A lot of it comes from whatever I'm actually feeling when I'm creating.
- 2:41And I've always been big on being able to create independently.
- 2:45That's what interests me about your story.
- 2:47Because you're not waiting for somebody to give you permission to create.
- 2:50Exactly.
- 2:51A lot of my workflow is mobile.
- 2:53I'm writing.
- 2:54Recording.
- 2:54Producing.
- 2:55Mixing.
- 2:55Putting projects together.
- 2:57If I have the tools available, I'm trying to make something.
- 3:00But here's where I'm going to challenge you.
- 3:02Creative independence is powerful.
- 3:04Creative independence without organization can become chaos.
- 3:08Absolutely.
- 3:09Because if you're producing that much material, eventually you're not managing ten
- 3:13songs.
- 3:14You're managing intellectual property.
- 3:17That's the game right there.
- 3:18And let's give the audience some context.
- 3:21Lil Bennington has already been building a catalog that includes projects like New
- 3:26Faith, My Pleasure, Moments Divided, and the self-titled Bennington.
- 3:32And there's collaborative work like HellFire Disciples with sadboy 9 8 8.
- 3:37That's output.
- 3:38But here's what we're going to start teaching on this show: Output is not
- 3:43automatically an asset.
- 3:45Organization turns output into something you can manage.
- 3:49Ownership turns it into something you can control.
- 3:52Strategy turns it into something you can grow.
- 3:55And longevity tells you whether you actually built something.
- 3:58Because anybody can have one record everybody talks about for three weeks.
- 4:01What does the catalog look like ten years later?
- 4:04That's where my thinking has been changing.
- 4:06When you're creating constantly, your first thought is the song.
- 4:11Does the record sound right?
- 4:12Does it express what I'm trying to say?
- 4:14But then you start realizing every song has another side to it.
- 4:17There's the master.
- 4:18There's publishing.
- 4:19There's credits.
- 4:20There's distribution.
- 4:22There's metadata.
- 4:23There's money attached to different rights.
- 4:25Now we're talking.
- 4:26That's why you're here.
- 4:28Not because we're trying to turn creativity into corporate paperwork.
- 4:32We're trying to make sure the creativity doesn't disappear because nobody handled
- 4:36the paperwork.
- 4:37That's a jewel right there.
- 4:39You can make the wildest record imaginable.
- 4:42Break every musical rule.
- 4:44Turn the guitar up until the engineer starts complaining.
- 4:47But when the song is finished?
- 4:49Handle your business.
- 4:51Let's turn this into something every independent artist listening can use.
- 4:55You've got twenty songs.
- 4:57Fifty songs.
- 4:58A hundred songs.
- 5:00Maybe you've been releasing music for five years.
- 5:03What's the first move?
- 5:04Inventory.
- 5:05Know what you have.
- 5:06And don't say, "I got like eighty-something songs."
- 5:10No.
- 5:10How many?
- 5:11What are they called?
- 5:12When did they come out?
- 5:13Who worked on them?
- 5:14Exactly.
- 5:15Build a catalog database.
- 5:16Title.
- 5:17Version.
- 5:18Release date.
- 5:19Writers.
- 5:20Producers.
- 5:21Featured artists.
- 5:22Splits.
- 5:23Master ownership.
- 5:24Publishing ownership.
- 5:25Distributor.
- 5:26ISRC.
- 5:27Artwork.
- 5:28Contracts.
- 5:29Registration information.
- 5:31Revenue.
- 5:31Get organized.
- 5:33Especially if you're somebody like me who creates fast.
- 5:35Because high output creates another responsibility.
- 5:39You've got to make sure the business can keep up with the art.
- 5:42That's it.
- 5:42Don't slow down the creativity.
- 5:44Build infrastructure capable of keeping up with it.
- 5:46And handle splits early.
- 5:48Don't wait until the record gets successful.
- 5:50Everybody is your brother when the song has three hundred streams.
- 5:53Then the check arrives.
- 5:55Suddenly everybody remembers the studio session differently.
- 5:58Facts.
- 5:58Handle the business while everybody is still cool.
- 6:02That's part of financial literacy in hip-hop.
- 6:05And financial literacy doesn't start with stocks.
- 6:08It starts with understanding your own business.
- 6:12Do you understand how your music makes money?
- 6:15Do you know who owns your masters?
- 6:17Do you understand your publishing?
- 6:19Do you know where your royalties are supposed to come from?
- 6:22Do you know your percentages?
- 6:24Because revenue isn't wealth.
- 6:26Let's keep making that distinction.
- 6:28Revenue comes in.
- 6:30Wealth is what you're building and retaining.
- 6:32If your catalog generates money but you don't control the underlying rights,
- 6:36that's a completely different economic position than owning an appreciating catalog.
- 6:41And that's where legacy comes into the conversation.
- 6:45Because if you're talking about generational wealth, the question becomes: What
- 6:49survives you?
- 6:50That's something I want to build toward.
- 6:52I don't want the music to just be a bunch of links floating around online.
- 6:55I want the catalog to have structure.
- 6:57That's Hip-Hop Hero League mentality.
- 7:00And let's connect this to knowledge of self.
- 7:02Before somebody can successfully market you, you need to understand you.
- 7:08What do you represent?
- 7:10What makes your sound yours?
- 7:12What does your audience come to you for?
- 7:14What values are attached to your name?
- 7:17Because if you don't define yourself, the market will gladly define you.
- 7:21And usually it'll define you according to what's easiest to sell today,
- 7:24not what's best for you ten years from now.
- 7:26Exactly.
- 7:28Knowledge.
- 7:29Understanding.
- 7:30Application.
- 7:31That's where concepts like Supreme Mathematics have had such a deep historical
- 7:36relationship with hip-hop culture.
- 7:38We're approaching those teachings respectfully.
- 7:41Not as marketing gimmicks.
- 7:43Not as slogans.
- 7:45We're talking about the tradition of artists using knowledge of self as part of
- 7:49understanding their place in the world.
- 7:51And musically, knowledge of self gives you freedom.
- 7:54Because if I know who I am creatively, I don't have to panic every time the trend
- 7:58changes.
- 7:59There it is.
- 8:00Trends rent attention.
- 8:01Identity builds equity.
- 8:03All right.
- 8:03Time for the official business.
- 8:05Do we have a cape?
- 8:06Absolutely not.
- 8:07Thank God.
- 8:08Lil Bennington, on behalf of Down By Law Management and everybody building this
- 8:13movement, we're officially welcoming you into the Hip-Hop Hero League.
- 8:17But I want people listening to understand what that means.
- 8:20The Hip-Hop Hero League isn't about pretending we're superheroes.
- 8:25It's about recognizing that hip-hop gave generations of people tools.
- 8:29Voice.
- 8:30Identity.
- 8:31Entrepreneurship.
- 8:33Technology.
- 8:34Fashion.
- 8:35Language.
- 8:36Community.
- 8:37And knowledge.
- 8:39Now we have a responsibility to build something with those tools.
- 8:43And economically, that means graduating from consumer to owner.
- 8:47Artist to entrepreneur.
- 8:49Income to assets.
- 8:51Individual success to generational strategy.
- 8:54And you don't have to become somebody else to do that.
- 8:56That's important.
- 8:57You don't have to stop being an artist.
- 8:59You don't have to start walking around talking like a banker.
- 9:02Please don't.
- 9:02You just have to understand your business.
- 9:04Bennington, your music pulls from different worlds.
- 9:08Alternative rock.
- 9:09Rap-rock.
- 9:10Nu-metal.
- 9:11Hip-hop.
- 9:12Heavy music.
- 9:13Some people are going to ask, "Where does that fit?"
- 9:17My answer is that hip-hop has always been about transformation.
- 9:21DJs took records that already existed and discovered completely different
- 9:25possibilities inside them.
- 9:28Sampling transformed sound.
- 9:30Turntables became instruments.
- 9:32Drum machines became weapons.
- 9:35Technology people overlooked became the foundation of movements.
- 9:39So experimentation doesn't scare me.
- 9:42That's exactly how I look at it.
- 9:43I respect where different sounds come from.
- 9:46But I don't want genre to become a cage.
- 9:48I want to take those influences and build something that feels like me.
- 9:52Then here's the question I want you to answer on your first episode.
- 9:55Ten years from now, what should the name Lil Bennington mean?
- 9:59Evolution.
- 10:00Consistency.
- 10:02Independence.
- 10:03Somebody who wasn't afraid to experiment.
- 10:06But also somebody who built something real behind the music.
- 10:10I want somebody to be able to go through the catalog years from now and hear
- 10:15different periods.
- 10:16Different emotions.
- 10:17Different sounds.
- 10:19But I also want the business behind that catalog to be strong enough that the work
- 10:24continues creating opportunities.
- 10:26That's legacy.
- 10:27Then welcome to the League.
- 10:28Welcome to the team.
- 10:30And welcome to Clone Wars.
- 10:31Let's build.
- 10:32Before we close this special episode, everybody listening gets an assignment.
- 10:37Because that's what we're doing here.
- 10:39Entertainment with information.
- 10:41Culture with application.
- 10:43So let's go around the table.
- 10:45Zygos, give them one.
- 10:46Know your catalog.
- 10:48Every record.
- 10:48Every collaboration.
- 10:49Every producer.
- 10:50Every feature.
- 10:51Every split.
- 10:52Stop treating your career like a junk drawer.
- 10:55Calvin.
- 10:55Know your numbers.
- 10:57What came in?
- 10:58Where did it come from?
- 10:59What did the release cost?
- 11:00What do you own?
- 11:01What are your recurring expenses?
- 11:03What percentage are you actually keeping?
- 11:05You cannot build generational wealth if you refuse to measure what's happening
- 11:09financially.
- 11:10Bennington.
- 11:11First episode.
- 11:12Give the people something.
- 11:13Don't let independence turn into isolation.
- 11:16Learn how to do things yourself because that gives you power.
- 11:20But also learn when you need a team.
- 11:23Management.
- 11:24Production.
- 11:25Marketing.
- 11:26Business.
- 11:27Whatever helps you grow.
- 11:29The goal shouldn't be proving you can do every job.
- 11:32The goal should be building something that lasts.
- 11:35That's exactly why this chair exists.
- 11:37And mine?
- 11:38Know yourself.
- 11:40Because your career is going to encounter people who have an idea of what you should
- 11:44sound like.
- 11:45What you should wear.
- 11:47What you should post.
- 11:49Who you should become.
- 11:51Listen to information.
- 11:53Learn.
- 11:53Evolve.
- 11:55But don't outsource your identity.
- 11:57Knowledge of self gives everything else a foundation.
- 12:00And back up your sessions.
- 12:02Please.
- 12:03Definitely.
- 12:04Man, listen.
- 12:05Your entire catalog cannot live on one phone with a cracked screen.
- 12:08That's financial literacy lesson number seven.
- 12:10Buy a hard drive.
- 12:11Two hard drives.
- 12:13See?
- 12:13We're building wealth already.
- 12:15But seriously, today represents a new chapter.
- 12:17I'm DJ Universe.
- 12:19Dangerous Zygos.
- 12:20Calvin Blingwell.
- 12:22And Lil Bennington.
- 12:23Those are your four voices moving forward on Clone Wars: The Spinoff.
- 12:27And today we're officially welcoming Lil Bennington into the family,
- 12:31into the fourth chair, and into the Hip-Hop Hero League.
- 12:35Bennington, last word belongs to you.
- 12:38What are we building?
- 12:39Something bigger than one song.
- 12:41Bigger than one project.
- 12:42We're building a catalog.
- 12:44We're building ownership.
- 12:45We're building community.
- 12:46We're building something that can still mean something years from now.
- 12:49That's the mission.
- 12:50Turn creativity into assets.
- 12:52Turn assets into infrastructure.
- 12:54Turn infrastructure into legacy.
- 12:56And never forget: Know what you created.
- 12:59Know what you own.
- 13:01Know where the money goes.
- 13:02Know who you are.
- 13:04Build your catalog like an asset.
- 13:06Build your name like a brand.
- 13:08And build your career like something your family can inherit.
- 13:12Welcome to the League, Lil Bennington.
- 13:15Let's get to work.
- 13:16This is DJ Universe, Dangerous Zygos, Calvin Blingwell, and Lil Bennington.
- 13:22This is Clone Wars: The Spinoff.
- 13:24Welcome to the new era.
