- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeff Legwalld time here attorney camp coverage brought to
- 0:02Speaker 1: you by ramos Law car accident. You need ramos Law
- 0:05Speaker 1: medical doctor and attorney visit ramos Law dot com. Uh, Jeff,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the injuries are mounting right now. Uh today Marvin Mims,
- 0:14Speaker 1: Nate Atkins, and Matt Henningson left the field with injuries.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Is Taysom Hill able to play all three of those
- 0:23Speaker 1: different positions?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Roll if yas Sean Payton probably say yes, but uh no,
- 0:31Speaker 2: it was a brutal leak when you think about it
- 0:33Speaker 2: for a team that has had rare injury good fortune
- 0:39Speaker 2: over the last two seasons, especially Uh, this was a
- 0:43Speaker 2: particularly tough week. I mean Benito model.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Then today you know the three guys including Men's and
- 0:50Speaker 2: Mens's Uh, you know, Wattles already a minimum of a
- 0:56Speaker 2: week out probably and you know if men Is, he
- 1:00Speaker 2: was hopping as if it was a a muscle type injury.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So you know that's gonna be one to watch as
- 1:07Speaker 2: they evaluated today and tomorrow morning. So and Henningson's I
- 1:14Speaker 2: feel awful, you know for him that that was hard
- 1:17Speaker 2: to watch given how Hardy's work to come back, and
- 1:20Speaker 2: it was all it's a year to the day, I
- 1:22Speaker 2: think from when he was injured at the joint practice
- 1:26Speaker 2: with the Niners last year. So, you know, it's one
- 1:32Speaker 2: thing after all these years of covering the league I
- 1:35Speaker 2: just can't get used to, is is watching guys who
- 1:39Speaker 2: have worked so hard to come back suffer something like that,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, again before they even get to play in
- 1:47Speaker 2: any games or anything. So, uh, you know that it
- 1:51Speaker 2: will be a surprise if that's not a very serious
- 1:56Speaker 2: uh you know, potentially season under there given his reaction
- 2:00Speaker 2: to it.
- 2:01Speaker 3: So what did you think of the proceeding? Sean left
- 2:04Speaker 3: about halfway through practice, as he told us he would,
- 2:07Speaker 3: no surprise there, he said, he was off to, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 3: do the thing in Canton. Obviously, Drew Brees talked about
- 2:11Speaker 3: him in the Hall of Fame game. What was that
- 2:14Speaker 3: last night? Feels like that was three days ago, but
- 2:16Speaker 3: that's training camp for him, so we knew he'd be leaving.
- 2:20Speaker 3: How'd you think things went after he left? Did you
- 2:21Speaker 3: notice anything different to the pace or not really at all?
- 2:24Speaker 3: He kind of I know he left instructions. Just what
- 2:26Speaker 3: were your thoughts, especially in the two minutdrill at the end.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I know that had a nice to minute drill
- 2:31Speaker 2: at the end, you know, mix it a nice ball
- 2:33Speaker 2: to Sutton and then I think to anger him to
- 2:37Speaker 2: finish it out. So I think overall, even when Sean
- 2:41Speaker 2: was there, you can tell this was sort of me
- 2:45Speaker 2: practice deep and in the one week where they really
- 2:50Speaker 2: had to go at it six days and then you
- 2:52Speaker 2: know tomorrow is you know, back in the old day,
- 2:56Speaker 2: a foam blowing scrimmage. It's going to be a sort
- 2:59Speaker 2: of a control scrimmage tomorrow. But they had that seal
- 3:03Speaker 2: of the day before something, so yeah, tempo was the
- 3:09Speaker 2: tempo was good, but just the noise and the energy
- 3:12Speaker 2: you could tell they were they were fighting through it
- 3:15Speaker 2: today and you know a little bit to be expected.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And then some of the energy guys, you know, Malcolm
- 3:21Speaker 2: Roach and DJ DJ Jones had the day off so
- 3:24Speaker 2: they were already out of the mix. So you could
- 3:28Speaker 2: tell some of the energy guys were missing today.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and it really was it kind of it was interesting, Jeff,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and and you know, it kind of sounds like you
- 3:37Speaker 1: viewed it the same way. I thought it was a
- 3:39Speaker 1: very uneven practice out of the Broncos today, and then
- 3:43Speaker 1: that two minute drill kind of came out of nowhere,
- 3:46Speaker 1: And I would like to think particularly for the guys
- 3:48Speaker 1: on the offensive side of the ball, not the defense
- 3:50Speaker 1: because they lost, but for the guys on offense. I mean,
- 3:54Speaker 1: that was really really crisp. You mentioned the twenty seven
- 3:57Speaker 1: yonder is something the fade to angrim on the touchdown
- 4:00Speaker 1: you hit a little Jordan Humphrey and Pat Brian I
- 4:02Speaker 1: believe on on that series as well. What is it
- 4:06Speaker 1: about that two minute situation where bo Nicks is just
- 4:11Speaker 1: a different football player?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Well, you know, I've always contended through the years that
- 4:19Speaker 2: this can happen. You know, Steve McNair was a guy
- 4:22Speaker 2: who is sort of the same way in that the
- 4:26Speaker 2: menu gets a lot more condensed. So the quarterbacks choices
- 4:30Speaker 2: are very definitive, and there's not a lot of you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: hemming and hawn about what are you gonna call here?
- 4:36Speaker 2: You're just going right to the menu as a play
- 4:41Speaker 2: caller and as a as a quarterback, and the checks
- 4:44Speaker 2: are very defined, and what you would get in and
- 4:47Speaker 2: out of are very defined. It's all there's not much nebulous,
- 4:51Speaker 2: So at least the team that's good in the two
- 4:53Speaker 2: minutes throw it's not as nebulous as you know, they're
- 4:58Speaker 2: just isn't nearly as much on the call sheet that's
- 5:01Speaker 2: in play. So I think that's why he flourishes, is
- 5:05Speaker 2: just he knows exactly what he's going to get off
- 5:09Speaker 2: the play sheet. And you know, frankly, some guys just
- 5:13Speaker 2: like that pace. You know, let's go, go go, And
- 5:17Speaker 2: I think, you know, son of a coach, Bo Nicks
- 5:21Speaker 2: was very comfortable at that pace.
- 5:24Speaker 3: All right, Jeff, what are you seeing at You know,
- 5:27Speaker 3: I want to ask you a sneaky question. So I'm
- 5:29Speaker 3: trying to figure out a way to do this. You
- 5:31Speaker 3: feel like you've seen some good competition at the outside linebacker,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and no matter whatever the legal situation is going on,
- 5:39Speaker 3: there might be a competition for that starting job outside,
- 5:43Speaker 3: whether Cooper's clear or not.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I mean I I you know, I said,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think the team saw it. You know, even before
- 5:52Speaker 2: any of this happened, the Broncos are already thinking Jonah
- 5:57Speaker 2: Ellis is going to get more snaps a outside line
- 6:00Speaker 2: because he was doing so well. They just scrapped the
- 6:05Speaker 2: plan of him taking snats an inside linebacker to cover
- 6:10Speaker 2: for green Laws departure and all the rest of it
- 6:14Speaker 2: that they were thinking. They then through that plan in
- 6:17Speaker 2: the dumper when they watched what Elis was doing. So
- 6:22Speaker 2: it isn't a shock to me that he's having such
- 6:24Speaker 2: a good tamp because they had already seen glimpses of
- 6:27Speaker 2: it when they were just in the ota section of this.
- 6:31Speaker 2: So that ton of Allis is gonna play more and
- 6:34Speaker 2: every day. You see why. I mean, he's he's an
- 6:36Speaker 2: impactful guy. And you know, I know I talked it's
- 6:42Speaker 2: inside linebacker and not outside line but I know I
- 6:45Speaker 2: talk to you guys about Red Murdoch a few days ago,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and all he does is just get noticed a little
- 6:52Speaker 2: more every day. So I think he's making a big
- 6:55Speaker 2: push to be that third or fourth inside guy when
- 6:59Speaker 2: it's all said and done in there.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Forced fumbled today for big number fifty, Red Murdoch
- 7:04Speaker 1: going up against a keen butler in seven on seven.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So yeah, he makes the impacts and that's exactly what
- 7:10Speaker 1: the Broncos are looking for out of him. Jeff Lakewild
- 7:13Speaker 1: is brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
- 7:15Speaker 1: Workers ib W Local sixty eight. You start with a
- 7:19Speaker 1: job and you end with a career, Jeff one pretty
- 7:24Speaker 1: interesting rep. I thought today with both Dobbins and Harvey
- 7:27Speaker 1: lined up in the backfield formationally without getting an angry
- 7:31Speaker 1: phone call from the Broncos. What are the things that
- 7:34Speaker 1: you have seen or noticed? Are there any evolutions and
- 7:38Speaker 1: what the Broncos are doing in terms of formations and
- 7:41Speaker 1: personnel groupings that have maybe popped for you a little bit.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Well, I will say that they've shown that, you know
- 7:48Speaker 2: yet my informal charting. You know, they've shown that a
- 7:52Speaker 2: few times in this camp, and I think it is
- 7:55Speaker 2: one to sort of the dams Web endorsed wrinkles. They've
- 8:00Speaker 2: had it in the playbook already. I don't want to
- 8:02Speaker 2: make it sound like they're drawing a new play yet,
- 8:04Speaker 2: but it was in there, but he has pushed it
- 8:08Speaker 2: to the forefront a little bit. I've seen it multiple
- 8:12Speaker 2: times and team drills this year, and I think he
- 8:16Speaker 2: I've seen more tweets. Again, I don't get to see
- 8:20Speaker 2: a lot of the I see some of the lockthroughs,
- 8:22Speaker 2: but I don't see them all, and I know a
- 8:25Speaker 2: lot of the tweet the real big tweaks are are
- 8:28Speaker 2: happening in those other walkthroughs. But a lot of the
- 8:33Speaker 2: changes that I've seen with my own eyes so far
- 8:37Speaker 2: are in the run game. So I think Webb's impact
- 8:43Speaker 2: on being the play caller and sort of getting a
- 8:46Speaker 2: bigger voice and what they're gonna practice, what they're gonna
- 8:49Speaker 2: rep I think is showing up in the run game
- 8:52Speaker 2: more right now. And it's tough to evaluate that because
- 8:57Speaker 2: the defense has dominated those periods because they're a really
- 9:01Speaker 2: good defense. So, you know, I think the preseason game
- 9:05Speaker 2: in Atlanta is gonna offer a little more about where
- 9:10Speaker 2: things really are on offense, because I don't I don't
- 9:13Speaker 2: think fans should think they're getting a good gage when
- 9:16Speaker 2: they leave practice because, uh, they're facing one of the
- 9:20Speaker 2: best defenses in the league and they came to camp
- 9:23Speaker 2: ready to go.
- 9:25Speaker 3: All right, Uh, we've got what's being called a scrimmage tomorrow.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And in modern NFL parlance, what should we expect coming
- 9:31Speaker 3: up here, Jeff? Because again it's not are we gonna
- 9:34Speaker 3: see like you know, I say, go live, not bring
- 9:38Speaker 3: guys to the ground, but will this be actual? I'm
- 9:40Speaker 3: gonna call MIO, You're gonna call your dean. Either side
- 9:43Speaker 3: knows what's coming or what's gonna happen to mar Do
- 9:45Speaker 3: you think.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Well controlled stimmage is you know, everybody knows what periods
- 9:50Speaker 2: they're gonna be and like this is we're gonna do
- 9:52Speaker 2: two drives or two possessions, uh and and people are
- 9:56Speaker 2: sort of familiar with what's available. It will be more
- 10:00Speaker 2: game like than they've done so far. So, I mean,
- 10:03Speaker 2: some of the eleven on eleven's they've done have been
- 10:06Speaker 2: good game situational things, but this will resemble more of
- 10:11Speaker 2: a game than they've done so in the past. It
- 10:14Speaker 2: will not be a scrimmage is some days of old,
- 10:17Speaker 2: so I don't think people should come expecting that. But
- 10:22Speaker 2: you know, I when I covered the Steelers in the
- 10:24Speaker 2: early nineties, it's hard to believe they did this now,
- 10:27Speaker 2: but they would scrimmage the Bills in Eerie, Pennsylvania, and
- 10:32Speaker 2: it was like a game. Yeah, like like in the
- 10:35Speaker 2: third week of camp. So, I mean it was It's
- 10:38Speaker 2: crazy what they did then compared to to now. And
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm not sure it helped them along the way doing
- 10:46Speaker 2: it that way back then, but because I'm not sure
- 10:49Speaker 2: guys were ready for that kind of stuff. But yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 2: I used to know for the Steelers bill scrimmage and
- 10:56Speaker 2: Eerie and watch them go at it at the high school.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yeah, won't exactly look like that tomorrow with the Broncos,
- 11:02Speaker 1: but we're looking for some intensity. And then a week
- 11:05Speaker 1: from today Jeff preseason opener on the road at Atlanta.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Knowing the way that Sean Payton likes to conduct his preseason,
- 11:14Speaker 1: knowing that the Broncos do have some nagging injuries right now,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and knowing the continuity with this roster, what kind of
- 11:23Speaker 1: right now is your sense of how Sean plans to
- 11:25Speaker 1: attack this first preseason game.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I think if you're a healthy starter, you have to
- 11:30Speaker 2: play some snaps. You know how many snaps that is?
- 11:34Speaker 2: I think will very at your experience level, you know
- 11:39Speaker 2: all of those things, you know. I think some linemen
- 11:43Speaker 2: will play more than than Glintsey does you know what
- 11:45Speaker 2: I mean? I think, But in this perfect world, starters
- 11:50Speaker 2: will place some in the first quarter and then they'll
- 11:54Speaker 2: go from there. I think the teams will still get
- 11:58Speaker 2: the bulk of the work. That'll be the group they're
- 12:01Speaker 2: really targeting. Ours will go in the first quarter. And
- 12:07Speaker 2: if you know, especially in the offense, if the outfense
- 12:10Speaker 2: puts together a really good possession, are two good early possessions,
- 12:14Speaker 2: that'll be bad and they'll get most of those guys
- 12:16Speaker 2: out of there.
- 12:17Speaker 3: All right, I got a couple for you, and they're
- 12:19Speaker 3: both Hall of Fame related, if you can believe it, Jeff, So, first,
- 12:22Speaker 3: I want to start with something from your very own
- 12:24Speaker 3: publication on your very own website. ESPN's everybody that could
- 12:29Speaker 3: be in the Hall of Fame list And when they
- 12:32Speaker 3: go to the Broncos and I don't know if you
- 12:34Speaker 3: contributed to this or not, they keep it up. They
- 12:37Speaker 3: don't have anybody on the team that's already in, but
- 12:40Speaker 3: they said keep it up. Nick, Benito, Quinn Miners and
- 12:43Speaker 3: Pats er Tan. We don't even to talk about Pats
- 12:46Speaker 3: or Tan. What do you think of the shot for
- 12:48Speaker 3: the other two at the Hall?
- 12:49Speaker 2: Ultimately, well, I think in the current guidelines, the way
- 12:58Speaker 2: the loading is now, there are probably way too many,
- 13:03Speaker 2: you know, going in guys on the list because it's
- 13:07Speaker 2: it's very restrictive now. It's gonna be very difficult for
- 13:10Speaker 2: that number of people to make it if they don't
- 13:13Speaker 2: tweak the voting. But of this group, the players who
- 13:17Speaker 2: had the profile, you know, when you're looking at a
- 13:20Speaker 2: Hall of Fame profile and a guy who hasn't been
- 13:23Speaker 2: in the league ten years, you're looking for all pros
- 13:27Speaker 2: you know, year end honors, Defensive Player of the Year,
- 13:30Speaker 2: Offensive Player of the Year, you know, for MVP, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: again until they reached ten years, it's really hard to
- 13:37Speaker 2: say all this guy's going in and the Broncos really
- 13:40Speaker 2: don't have that bowls would fit the category. But his
- 13:43Speaker 2: early portion of his career was such a fight. As
- 13:47Speaker 2: he developed, you know, he made himself into what he
- 13:51Speaker 2: is right now. If he had had this arc, you know,
- 13:56Speaker 2: this level of play his first four years of his career,
- 14:00Speaker 2: I think both would be the guy you know headed in,
- 14:03Speaker 2: you know, headed that way because he'd have the years
- 14:06Speaker 2: built in. But if Sirtaan's stacking the next four seasons
- 14:11Speaker 2: the way he has, you know, the current ones, then
- 14:15Speaker 2: he's definitely got the profile. And Minuts is a guard,
- 14:19Speaker 2: and it's really hard for guards, but he has the
- 14:22Speaker 2: all pro framework and he has the profile right now.
- 14:28Speaker 2: If the profile is the same when he's in year nine,
- 14:32Speaker 2: year ten, year eleven, all right.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Then I got to ask you one quick one about
- 14:35Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame last night, because I know Carson
- 14:37Speaker 3: Beck went out there and got everybody all big fired
- 14:39Speaker 3: up and did his thing. Do you warn anybody about
- 14:43Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame game.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I mean that.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I remember when I covered that when we were with
- 14:47Speaker 3: Mike sheen hand and again with Vic vanje I didn't
- 14:49Speaker 3: feel like there's a ton of prep going into that one.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Do you have to be leary of the All Star
- 14:53Speaker 3: performance in the Hall of Fame game?
- 14:56Speaker 2: I think that's why they're, you know, trade touchdowns at
- 15:00Speaker 2: one point, just because you know, you're just wheeling and dealing.
- 15:03Speaker 2: You know, they've probably repped some of the game stuff
- 15:08Speaker 2: just the day before, you know, and that's it, and
- 15:11Speaker 2: you're just going off athleticism and your talent level does
- 15:16Speaker 2: tell me those teams probably have an equal talent level
- 15:21Speaker 2: in terms of personnel in some areas. I was intrigued
- 15:27Speaker 2: by Haines Kane because I was intrigued by him before
- 15:29Speaker 2: the draft. He's just got a real, you know, kind
- 15:35Speaker 2: of survivor mentality when he plays, and I was always
- 15:39Speaker 2: curious if someone was gonna appreciate that and give him
- 15:43Speaker 2: a chance at some point because he played in an
- 15:48Speaker 2: odd offense. If you're an NFL personnel guy and you're
- 15:51Speaker 2: trying to evaluate guys for NFL careers, So that was
- 15:54Speaker 2: the player that intrigued me watching last night was seeing
- 15:58Speaker 2: him do his thing.
- 16:00Speaker 1: The other thing that I was very amused by this
- 16:02Speaker 1: week really quickly, Jeff, speaking of the Hall of Fame,
- 16:04Speaker 1: was you having to tell Sean Payton what his itinerary
- 16:09Speaker 1: was for the weekend because he really didn't know, but
- 16:11Speaker 1: you know everything about the Hall of Fame. I was
- 16:13Speaker 1: tickled by that.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Well, Yeah, I'm there to help. I'm a helper. Everybody
- 16:19Speaker 2: knows I'm a helper out there.
- 16:21Speaker 3: You are a helper.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you got the you got the Gold Jacket Dinner
- 16:23Speaker 1: on Friday night, Sean. Yeah, got to move that flight up,
- 16:28Speaker 1: pal Yeah, exactly, you gotta. You got a meal to
- 16:30Speaker 1: get there.
- 16:31Speaker 2: They were gonna ask to hustle to make it today
- 16:34Speaker 2: because the Gold Jacket Dinner might that might be the
- 16:36Speaker 2: best event of the whole weekend really in terms of
- 16:41Speaker 2: crazy enthusiasm and just kind of the bigness on the moment.
- 16:45Speaker 2: I think that's the that's the that's tonight. They do
- 16:49Speaker 2: it in the arena in downtown Canton. Everybody comes out
- 16:52Speaker 2: like it's the Oscars. It's an amazing event in Canton
- 16:56Speaker 2: because it is the event of the year. And if
- 17:00Speaker 2: you live in Canton and you get tickets to that
- 17:03Speaker 2: it's like a huge thing. And it's really really cool
- 17:07Speaker 2: because they in the past would have the Entrinese walk
- 17:12Speaker 2: a stage or a runway that was the length of
- 17:15Speaker 2: the arena and people go crazy cheering the whole time,
- 17:20Speaker 2: and then at the end of the walk, your presenter
- 17:22Speaker 2: would put the gold jacket on you. And it's just
- 17:26Speaker 2: really cool. And I've had I've had twenty thirty Hall
- 17:31Speaker 2: of Famers through the years tell me that that's when
- 17:34Speaker 2: it really hit them that they were Hall of Famers?
- 17:36Speaker 3: Now is that the one in there at dinner too,
- 17:38Speaker 3: We're just just the Hall of Famers are at.
- 17:41Speaker 2: That's a luncheon, yea they call it. They call it
- 17:44Speaker 2: the Nichty Luncheon. And it's only Hall of Famers, a
- 17:49Speaker 2: couple of people from the Hall of Fame. And it
- 17:52Speaker 2: used to be selectors could go, so I've been to
- 17:55Speaker 2: a few, but they don't. They don't. The selectors don't
- 17:58Speaker 2: go anymore either. But and it's basically the new class
- 18:02Speaker 2: of Hall of Famers is not allowed to speak, and
- 18:06Speaker 2: it's just the hall the current Hall of Famers standing
- 18:09Speaker 2: up and telling them what it means. So like the
- 18:12Speaker 2: one I went to, I'm a kid from Chicago, and
- 18:15Speaker 2: I was sitting at the at the table before the
- 18:18Speaker 2: lunch in my seat and I hear somebody ask me
- 18:24Speaker 2: can I sit here? And I looked up and it
- 18:25Speaker 2: was Dick Buckus. So that was pretty cool.
- 18:29Speaker 1: A line eye legend for you right there, Another a
- 18:32Speaker 1: line e legend, Jeff Legwald. Everybody ESPN dot com read
- 18:36Speaker 1: Leggy stuff, Leggy Man. Awesome as always, Thank you so much. Thanks, Hello,
- 18:40Speaker 1: Let's see it, Jeff Legwell. Brought to you by the
- 18:42Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. Start
- 18:46Speaker 1: with a job, end with a career
