Ep. 124. Who is Web-Weaver in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:14
Hi guys, it's Mecca of vigilante vibes and I have another
• 0:17
character breakdown for you. And today I am going to continue
• 0:20
the Pride month theme with another LGBTQ character that
• 0:24
just does not get a lot of attention, but mostly because
• 0:27
they're very new and because the fire spider verse is huge.
• 0:31
I am talking about none other than Cooper Cohen AKA Web
• 0:34
Weaver. Web Weaver is Marvel's first gay
• 0:37
male spider man. As Marvel describes him.
• 0:40
Web Weaver, a not so mild mannered fashion designer at Van
• 0:44
Dyne, gets spider powers and shows us a very different kind
• 0:48
of spider Slayer in a story by Steve Fox and Key Zama.
• 0:52
So it already sounds pretty exciting to me.
• 0:55
I think Web Weaver first appeared in Edge of Spider Verse
• 0:58
volume to #5 in October of 2022. There has been a lot of talk
• 1:02
about how flamboyant Web Weaver is, or how he's been described
• 1:06
as a twink, but it's important to note what his creator, Steve
• 1:09
Fox, says about him. Steve says, something I realized
• 1:13
immediately when conceiving Web Weaver is that he can't and
• 1:17
shouldn't represent all gay men. No single character can.
• 1:21
His fearlessly femme identity is essential to who he is, but it's
• 1:26
not the story. So there you have it.
• 1:30
OK, now continuing with Web Weaver story, it's important to
• 1:35
note that Web Weaver is a variant of Spider Man, not of
• 1:39
Peter Parker. Back in high school, Cooper
• 1:42
Cohen had a major crush on his classmate Peter Parker.
• 1:46
On a field trip. Cooper actually saved Peter from
• 1:49
getting bitten by a radioactive spider, but ended up getting
• 1:52
  bitten himself and gained superpowers.
• 1:54
Since then, the two became really close friends.
• 1:57
On prom night when Cooper's date bailed on him, Peter showed up
• 2:01
as his bro date so he wouldn't feel lonely.
• 2:05
After they graduated, Cooper noticed that Peter's talent for
• 2:08
photography while he was working at the Daily Bugle and
• 2:11
encouraged him to chase it as a career instead of sticking to
• 2:14
science. Thanks to that, Peter landed a
• 2:17
job as a runway fashion photographer.
• 2:20
Cooper's already tough relationship with his homophobic
• 2:23
parents got worse because he had to keep his superhero identity a
• 2:26
secret, and eventually they kicked him out.
• 2:29
He went to live with his aunts Lori and Mel, who were super
• 2:32
supportive and pushed him to follow his dreams.
• 2:35
They got him into New York's top fashion school, which led to a
• 2:39
job at the fancy Van Dyne fashion house.
• 2:42
That's when Cooper became the superhero Web Weaver, protecting
• 2:45
his community and his aunts. Start over.
• 2:48
He spent at least three years working as Web Weaver battling
• 2:51
all sorts of villains like Chameleon, Morbius, Craven, the
• 2:54
Hunter, Symbiotes, Rhino, and all these other characters.
• 2:59
His plans to go to Kyle Giannadi's summer birthday
• 3:02
parties on Fire Island got wrecked by fights with Ant Man
• 3:06
and Morbius 2 years in a row. Then Craven messed up the third.
• 3:10
Don't you just hate when that happens?
• 3:13
While Cooper was in college and fashion school, he and Peter
• 3:16
ended up living together as roommates and stayed roommates
• 3:19
even after graduation. After working at Van Dyne,
• 3:24
Cooper dated a Co worker named Albert Moon.
• 3:27
But things got messy when Albert left for work for a rival
• 3:31
company owned by no one else but Northstar.
• 3:35
Cooper's still a little salty about it, but he's OK with the
• 3:38
complicated fact that Albert was attracted to his web Weaver
• 3:42
alter ego. What Cooper didn't know was that
• 3:45
Albert was secretly the superhero Silk.
• 3:50
Neither of them knew each other's secret identity, but
• 3:52
they still had a flirty sort of romantic vibe, sometimes covered
• 3:57
for each other on superhero missions.
• 3:59
So cute. One New York Fashion Week,
• 4:03
Cooper found out that a model named Millie Collins was
• 4:07
actually impersonated by the shape shifting assassin
• 4:10
Chameleon, who had also disguised himself as Cooper's
• 4:13
boss, Janet Van Dyne. Web Weaver stepped in, stopped
• 4:17
Chameleon's plans to kill another model, and trapped him
• 4:21
with his webs. Right after that, Spider UK
• 4:24
popped up in the web portal and recruited Web Weaver to help him
• 4:27
fight a new threat in the spider verse.
• 4:31
So that there's not much to work with with Web Weaver because
• 4:34
  he's a very new character, but he's, he's a fun character.
• 4:37
He's very, very fancy for his power set.
• 4:42
It's about the same as every Spider Man variant.
• 4:45
After getting bitten by radioactive spider, Cooper has
• 4:48
the proportionate strength, speed, and agility.
• 4:51
He can crawl walls. He has Spidey Sense, which he
• 4:54
calls his websense. He's fashioned his own web
• 5:00
shooters for to snare bad guys and swing for fast travel, among
• 5:04
other things. So he's one of the many, many,
• 5:08
many spider man variants that are in the spider verse, but
• 5:12
he's new and he doesn't get a lot of love because there's not
• 5:15
much about him. So I hope someone learned
• 5:17
something from this. For comics, you can check out
• 5:19
about Web Weaver. You can check out Edge of Spider
