Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: On the Bechdelcast, the questions asked if movies have women
- 0:04Speaker 1: in them. Are all their discussions just boyfriends and husbands
- 0:08Speaker 1: or do they have individualism? The patriarchy's effing vast. Start
- 0:13Speaker 1: changing it with the Bechdelcast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hello, Bechtelcast listeners. Hello.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Here we are doing a bit of a mini-sode this week.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Don't turn it off.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Leave it on.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Keep it on.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Leave it on.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Because this isn't strictly an ad. We're going to do
- 0:31Speaker 1: a quick chat about The reason we're taking this week
- 0:34Speaker 1: soft off is because we're getting ready for our upcoming tour,
- 0:39Speaker 1: which we'll be talking about in a little bit. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: there's just a lot going on in the expanded Bechtelkast universe. And, yeah,
- 0:46Speaker 1: so we're going to chat about it.
- 0:47Speaker 2: First off, we're going to talk about Jamie's. forthcoming a
- 0:53Speaker 2: novel yay tell us about it jamie yeah.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm very excited for it and i don't i mean
- 1:00Speaker 1: i don't think i've really talked about it very much
- 1:03Speaker 1: on the pod but i've been working on this novel
- 1:06Speaker 1: for almost four years now i think actually technically four
- 1:10Speaker 1: years in terms of like idea to completion it'll be
- 1:14Speaker 1: almost five by the time it comes out But yeah,
- 1:18Speaker 1: it just went on presale.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I think maybe by the time.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You hear this, the cover will have also come out.
- 1:24Speaker 1: But it's called The Tower. It's been a story I've
- 1:28Speaker 1: had on my mind for a really, really, really long time.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And it is about a woman who is an architect
- 1:37Speaker 1: who falls in love with and starts a relationship with
- 1:42Speaker 1: with a blueprint that she designs to get into college
- 1:47Speaker 1: and then spends the book takes place when she's in
- 1:50Speaker 1: her mid 30s so she basically spends the better part
- 1:52Speaker 1: of 20 years trying to get this building into existence
- 1:58Speaker 1: while you know kind of maintaining the fact that you're
- 2:02Speaker 1: not letting anyone know that she is in love with
- 2:05Speaker 1: a blueprint and just generally has relationships with objects so
- 2:09Speaker 1: she's married to another architect.
- 2:11Speaker 3: There's a bunch of stuff going on there. Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So it just sort of follows that relationship and her
- 2:20Speaker 1: kind of difficult path as she navigates that.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And we haven't even really talked about it very much.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I've been pretty quiet about it.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I know you're writing a novel. I think you first
- 2:36Speaker 2: mentioned it to me maybe two years ago or so ish,
- 2:42Speaker 2: maybe a year ago.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:44Speaker 2: It was some time in the, it's been 84 years.
- 2:47Speaker 2: It was some time in the recent slash distant past
- 2:52Speaker 2: who can say, and then I didn't really hear anything
- 2:55Speaker 2: about it since from you. So I was like, Oh,
- 2:58Speaker 2: I wonder if, I wonder if Jamie's still working on that.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Cause famously I start a writing project and then work
- 3:06Speaker 2: on it for approximately three days and then quit it.
- 3:11Speaker 2: That's my MO when it comes to writing. So yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I wasn't really sure. And then you were like, by
- 3:18Speaker 2: the way, it's getting published. And I was like, wowie wow.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like working on it kind of in
- 3:26Speaker 1: chunks over the years, like when I had time or
- 3:30Speaker 1: just energy depending to get it done. But yeah, I
- 3:34Speaker 1: feel very lucky that It's with the same publisher and
- 3:39Speaker 1: editor as my previous book. Raw Dog, ever heard of it? I,
- 3:45Speaker 1: you know, I'm so thrilled that people have and I...
- 3:48Speaker 1: I would love if people stopped asking me questions about
- 3:50Speaker 1: hot dogs in my day-to-day life. But that is not,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you know, whatever. I truly only have myself to blame.
- 3:56Speaker 1: But I really loved writing that book. I loved getting
- 4:00Speaker 1: to tour it and getting to, you know, just hear
- 4:02Speaker 1: what people thought about it. And it was cool because
- 4:04Speaker 1: it was kind of this very, very long road to
- 4:07Speaker 1: get to write fiction, which I don't think, you know,
- 4:11Speaker 1: would have been quite as possible if.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I hadn't written Raw Dog first. whatever, that's more like
- 4:17Speaker 3: technical stuff.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But yeah, the story itself, I know that there's been...
- 4:21Speaker 1: I think a fair amount like written and talked about
- 4:24Speaker 1: it over the years, but it's an objective sexual relationship,
- 4:29Speaker 1: which I think we, I mean, we will talk about
- 4:31Speaker 1: it has been featured in pop culture has been featured in,
- 4:36Speaker 1: you know, movies and television over the years, I think
- 4:39Speaker 1: with varying results.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Sure.
- 4:42Speaker 1: We were, we're going to eventually talk about Lars and
- 4:45Speaker 1: the real girl, which is like about a Ryan Gosling
- 4:47Speaker 1: character having a relationship with a doll and There is
- 4:50Speaker 1: another like more obscure French movie that's closer to the
- 4:54Speaker 1: kind of thing that.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I'm talking about called Jumbo.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And it stars the brunette from Portrait of a Lady
- 5:04Speaker 3: on Fire.
- 5:04Speaker 1: The painter, not the lady on fire. Okay.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Got it.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Got it. Got it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: As a woman who is in love with a carnival ride.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I think it's a really, I would recommend it, but. Yeah,
- 5:17Speaker 1: it's been talked about kind of sporadically through the years.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But I think the thing that like really stuck with
- 5:21Speaker 1: me about it was that I learned about it in college.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Like I remember seeing like a documentary about it in
- 5:28Speaker 1: like 2011 about a woman named Erica Eiffel who had
- 5:33Speaker 1: married the Eiffel Tower.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Have you ever heard about this?
- 5:36Speaker 2: That sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't really know anything
- 5:41Speaker 2: about it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I think like a lot of stories I tend to
- 5:45Speaker 1: hyper fix it on. It's like a little obscure, but
- 5:49Speaker 1: also goes viral.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Every six months for like years.
- 5:53Speaker 1: It's the same thing to me as like every six
- 5:56Speaker 1: months without fail, people realize that Kathy Geisweit who drew
- 5:59Speaker 1: the Kathy comics is hot.
- 6:01Speaker 3: People rediscover this.
- 6:03Speaker 1: People rediscover that Keanu Reeves is nice every six months.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Like into fucking everything.
- 6:10Speaker 3: For whatever reason.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I don't know why, but like, I think that this
- 6:14Speaker 1: story is kind of similar where, you know, I've rewatched
- 6:19Speaker 1: the documentary many times. I haven't seen it in about
- 6:21Speaker 1: a year, but it's a, I believe a British documentary
- 6:25Speaker 1: about objective sexuals that is both very insightful and I
- 6:29Speaker 1: feel like very judgmental. Yeah. Where, you know, while I
- 6:36Speaker 1: myself have not Objective sexual.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I think that just like.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Any non-hetero kind of relationship, there is an intense judgment
- 6:47Speaker 1: made toward sex.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yes. Huge stigma.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I mean, I think that Erica Eiffel, who has a
- 6:54Speaker 1: very fascinating life story, I've never spoken to her personally,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but I think has been pretty heavily kind of through
- 7:01Speaker 1: the years made a joke of in pop culture. And
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think a lot of the media around objective sexuals
- 7:07Speaker 1: sort of seek to make it a punchline or like
- 7:11Speaker 1: it's a character detail that's made to make someone seem
- 7:15Speaker 1: a scale of quirky to unwell, I guess.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I remember there being an episode slash maybe a handful
- 7:22Speaker 2: of episodes on 30 Rock where... a james franco character
- 7:26Speaker 2: boo but he played someone who was in love with
- 7:32Speaker 2: a body pillow and that was that whole thing was
- 7:35Speaker 2: framed as a like what a ridiculous person he.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Is right and it's like james franco is a ridiculous
- 7:42Speaker 1: person but not for that reason yeah i think that
- 7:45Speaker 1: there is like and again i don't i don't again
- 7:47Speaker 1: this is like not a community i am an active
- 7:50Speaker 1: part of and it's not a community i've done like deep, deep,
- 7:54Speaker 1: deep research into the way I normally would if I
- 7:56Speaker 1: was doing nonfiction. But I feel like, yeah, it's very
- 8:00Speaker 1: often made to seem to be a punchline, including, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: some media that I have enjoyed that it's like made
- 8:08Speaker 1: to be clear, like this relationship is not real. This
- 8:11Speaker 1: relationship is symptomatic of something else going on in this
- 8:14Speaker 1: person's life. And so in The Tower, you know, I'm
- 8:19Speaker 1: not trying to, or I don't tell you, like, if
- 8:23Speaker 1: the relationship, like you can make what you will of
- 8:25Speaker 1: the relationship. Our protagonist is very real to her. And
- 8:30Speaker 1: so it's real to me. So it, I don't know.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I like, I'm already kind of in my head about like,
- 8:37Speaker 1: how do you talk about it? Cause I barely talked
- 8:39Speaker 1: about it. Like even like, you're like one of my
- 8:41Speaker 1: closest friends in the world. I've barely spoken to you
- 8:43Speaker 1: about it.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Wow. Keeping your secrets, Jamie.
- 8:47Speaker 3: It's kind of true.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I mean, up until like, a year ago until I
- 8:51Speaker 1: was like shopping it around really only Grant had read
- 8:55Speaker 1: the whole thing. But yeah, I mean, I think to
- 8:59Speaker 1: me it is very much a love story and it is, yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 1: it's just like, it's a relationship that I feel it
- 9:08Speaker 1: feels real to me at this point. And so I
- 9:12Speaker 1: hope that readers enjoy it. I hope that readers have,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I don't know, like relating to the Bechdel cast. We've
- 9:20Speaker 1: spent an actual decade at this point thinking about how
- 9:26Speaker 1: women are portrayed in media and how they are judged,
- 9:30Speaker 1: how they're not judged, all this different stuff. And also
- 9:34Speaker 1: feeling aware of, you know, like Mary Sue stuff. And,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, it's been very. challenging and like enlightening to
- 9:43Speaker 1: work on a character who you really like want to
- 9:46Speaker 1: present as a like this is who this person is
- 9:50Speaker 1: and you can judge her however you want but I'm
- 9:52Speaker 1: not going to judge her. And that's hard because our
- 9:56Speaker 1: job is judging stuff.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Famously, yes.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:02Speaker 1: But also in a way that I think is cool
- 10:04Speaker 1: because it's like a time capsule of how two people
- 10:07Speaker 1: interpreted this character in this moment with their respective experiences.
- 10:11Speaker 1: So anyways, I don't mean to go on too long
- 10:14Speaker 1: about it, but yeah, I'm really excited about it.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I'm still... I'm still tweaking.
- 10:21Speaker 1: The last parts of it, but it goes on sale now.
- 10:26Speaker 3: You can get it right now.
- 10:28Speaker 2: You can and you should.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You can and you should. I've made this plea before.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I aspire to make it again. I'm sure that all
- 10:38Speaker 1: of our listeners followed. Writers, it's very helpful.
- 10:45Speaker 3: If you pre-order it. Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And so if you are like, maybe I'll read it,
- 10:50Speaker 1: just order it, forget about it, and then something will
- 10:54Speaker 1: happen in June and a mysterious package will come.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I love doing that.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I love pre-ordering something like a year in advance and
- 11:02Speaker 1: then getting a mysterious package.
- 11:03Speaker 3: It's thrilling.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You're like, what could this be? What? So.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Thrill your future self by pre-ordering it.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think if you've enjoyed anything I've ever done, this
- 11:17Speaker 1: is weirdly of a part in the way to all
- 11:20Speaker 1: of it. It's new, but you're not going to be like, wait,
- 11:25Speaker 1: she's a Republican? I'm very excited about it.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I really hope you enjoy it.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean, I'll be annoying about it throughout
- 11:34Speaker 1: the the year as, as this comes up. But, um,
- 11:38Speaker 1: but yeah, that's, that's more information than I've shared about
- 11:42Speaker 1: the tower anywhere else to this point.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Well, thank you for sharing with me and our listeners.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I'm excited to spoil the book for you specifically.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Um, and also give you kind of, cause yeah, I
- 11:57Speaker 1: started writing it in 2022 and now it's 2026 and
- 11:58Speaker 1: I feel like.
- 12:02Speaker 3: You as someone who knows.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Me very well may be able to discern certain things
- 12:09Speaker 1: inside the book that our.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Listeners may not. And that's a mystery for the rest
- 12:14Speaker 3: of you.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Wow. Unless Grant's listening to this thing, he might pick
- 12:17Speaker 2: it up. And he should be. He should be listening
- 12:21Speaker 2: to all of our episodes.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He should. And he should.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And anytime, this is like kind of true, with all
- 12:28Speaker 1: love to my husband-to-be, Yeah. Sometimes I hear if he's
- 12:31Speaker 1: like listening to a podcast and it's three male voices
- 12:34Speaker 1: in the kitchen.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I'm like, what the fuck?
- 12:36Speaker 3: I'm like, earbuds at best. Earbuds at best.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Not in this house. Are we listening to three men
- 12:45Speaker 1: who claim to have different opinions but ultimately don't? So, again,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you can go to the link in the description to
- 12:54Speaker 1: pre-order The Tower. It officially comes out in June 2027.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And at that link specifically, I would recommend you go
- 13:02Speaker 1: to bookshop.org, which... many of you probably already know is
- 13:07Speaker 1: a website that will directly order my book from your
- 13:11Speaker 1: closest independent bookstore and support a local business, maybe even
- 13:15Speaker 1: introduce you to a local business and all of the
- 13:18Speaker 1: other links that also technically exist. But that's where I
- 13:22Speaker 1: would recommend that you go. And yeah, I don't know.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I'm very excited for you to meet this character. She's
- 13:30Speaker 1: A mess. She's a very complicated woman.
- 13:33Speaker 2: We love to see it.
- 13:35Speaker 3: We love to see it. I love to see her
- 13:37Speaker 3: stomping around on these pages. And I will also be
- 13:44Speaker 3: yapping my ass off.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Oh, actually, this is actually perfect. If you have already
- 13:50Speaker 1: pre-ordered the tower and you happen to be attending our
- 13:54Speaker 1: upcoming tour today, Do not forget to come to the
- 13:57Speaker 1: merch table because I have some exclusive free buttons and
- 14:05Speaker 1: other stuff related to the tower to give to people
- 14:09Speaker 1: who have pre-ordered it.
- 14:10Speaker 3: So if you have your pre-order.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Receipt, come to the merch table and there'll be some
- 14:16Speaker 1: goodies for you. And speaking of the tower.
- 14:19Speaker 3: So interesting. And incredible merch available.
- 14:21Speaker 2: At the tour. Yeah, there are shows coming up. And
- 14:25Speaker 2: not only are we selling merch at them, we're also doing.
- 14:28Speaker 3: A show before.
- 14:29Speaker 2: A whole show.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 3: I mean, if you insist. We'll do a whole show.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I guess.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I guess we'll do it. So as you may already know,
- 14:38Speaker 2: we have entered our 10th... year anniversary of hosting this show.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Can you believe it?
- 14:46Speaker 1: It's been 24 years. I can't believe we haven't said
- 14:51Speaker 1: that yet. I, it doesn't really make sense, but I
- 14:54Speaker 1: like it.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I love it. Um, so yes, we are celebrating by
- 14:59Speaker 2: doing a big anniversary tour. We are doing it region
- 15:04Speaker 2: by region and we're starting with the Northeast of the
- 15:08Speaker 2: U S uh, That is coming up in October. Tickets
- 15:11Speaker 2: are on sale now. We are kicking off the tour
- 15:15Speaker 2: in New York City. Ever heard of it? We are
- 15:18Speaker 2: returning to the Bell House where we have done shows before,
- 15:21Speaker 2: but not for many, many years. So we're very excited
- 15:24Speaker 2: to return. And tickets are already going fast for that.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So if you're in the New York area, get yours
- 15:29Speaker 1: now for crying out loud.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Seriously. That's on October 12th. Then we are scooting down
- 15:35Speaker 2: to Baltimore. We have a show at Creative Alliance on
- 15:40Speaker 2: October 15th. Very excited to be doing our first ever
- 15:44Speaker 2: Baltimore show. And I've never been there at all. So
- 15:47Speaker 2: I'm excited to go there for the first time.
- 15:49Speaker 3: My cousins will be there. I love my Baltimore area cousins.
- 15:55Speaker 1: We will be then going to Philadelphia at Philomoka. On
- 16:00Speaker 1: October 17th. We love Philly and that's a venue I've
- 16:03Speaker 1: never been to and I've always really, really, really wanted
- 16:05Speaker 1: to go to. Much less perform at.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I can't wait.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Then we are doing a homecoming of sorts for you, Caitlin,
- 16:13Speaker 1: in State College at Manny's.
- 16:16Speaker 2: That's right.
- 16:16Speaker 3: On October 18th, the next day.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah, we've got a stretch in Pennsylvania. Three days,
- 16:22Speaker 2: three shows.
- 16:23Speaker 1: It's a big state.
- 16:24Speaker 3: It's a big state. It really is.
- 16:25Speaker 2: People underestimate how big Pennsylvania is.
- 16:29Speaker 3: It's true.
- 16:30Speaker 2: But yeah, after Philadelphia, we are going to State College.
- 16:33Speaker 2: That is not where I'm from originally, but that is
- 16:36Speaker 2: where my family lives now.
- 16:38Speaker 1: And that's where you got one of two degrees that
- 16:40Speaker 1: you never talk about.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Thank you for bringing that up for me so that
- 16:44Speaker 2: I didn't have to.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I mean, that's after 10 years, you get the hang
- 16:47Speaker 1: of it.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Then we're going to one of my.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Favorite cities on the entire planet. No disrespect to every
- 16:53Speaker 1: other city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at one of my favorite comedy
- 16:56Speaker 1: clubs on the planet, Bottle Rocket.
- 16:59Speaker 3: On October 19th. So excited. The Pennsylvania trifecta.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Indeed.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And this is our first time doing a Bechtelcast show
- 17:06Speaker 2: in Pittsburgh. So I'm very excited about that.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Cannot wait.
- 17:10Speaker 1: They have a hot dog cart for crying out loud.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Come on.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Gasp.
- 17:13Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And then we are closing out this leg of the
- 17:17Speaker 2: tour with a show in Boston at Brattle Theater on
- 17:21Speaker 2: October 21st. So it's a homecoming for both of us.
- 17:25Speaker 1: So if you've ever wanted to meet my mom... You
- 17:28Speaker 1: aggressively can do so and she would love it. Yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 1: that's again on October 21st at the Brattle Theatre in
- 17:34Speaker 1: beautiful Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- 17:37Speaker 3: There are more dates coming up.
- 17:38Speaker 2: If you're like, wait a minute, I don't live in
- 17:40Speaker 2: any of those cities. I don't live near those cities.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I live in a different place. Well, guess what? We
- 17:47Speaker 2: are coming to other regions of the U.S. and maybe Canada.
- 17:52Speaker 2: We're trying to figure that out.
- 17:53Speaker 3: We're working on it.
- 17:54Speaker 2: So throughout the next year, we will be visiting different
- 17:58Speaker 2: regions of the country that we hail from.
- 18:01Speaker 1: As well as places we've never been. We're going to
- 18:03Speaker 1: be doing a southern leg of the tour, including cities
- 18:06Speaker 1: we've never been to before. We're going to be returning
- 18:09Speaker 1: to the Midwest.
- 18:10Speaker 3: And we can.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Officially tease that we'll be returning to the Northwest.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Yes. In January. So.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:17Speaker 2: We have not officially announced that yet. And tickets are
- 18:21Speaker 2: not on sale yet. But. Keep your eyes peeled. Mark
- 18:25Speaker 2: your calendars in mid-January.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And if you've seen us in the Pacific Northwest before,
- 18:31Speaker 1: keep an eye on your email lists. There'll be stuff
- 18:33Speaker 1: for you soon. And I guess just a little bit
- 18:36Speaker 1: of like insight into how our touring situation works, because
- 18:39Speaker 1: I feel like podcasting in the 10 years we've been
- 18:41Speaker 1: doing it has changed so much. It is like, at
- 18:46Speaker 1: least even as a listener of podcasts, it's like hard
- 18:49Speaker 1: to understand how stuff operates, who's doing what. I think
- 18:53Speaker 1: that sometimes podcasts have a vested interest in looking perhaps
- 18:59Speaker 1: more lo-fi than they actually are. So I think it's
- 19:03Speaker 1: worth mentioning that even though we've been on iHeart for
- 19:07Speaker 1: many years and our beloved Sophie has been our producer
- 19:11Speaker 1: for many years, the Bechtelcast.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Has remained a very lo-fi operation.
- 19:17Speaker 1: So if you haven't been to our shows before, because
- 19:21Speaker 1: I've been surprised before to go to live shows and
- 19:23Speaker 1: this isn't a judgment but like you know you go
- 19:25Speaker 1: and it's like you're like oh this is like this
- 19:27Speaker 1: is a business they have a whole team we're we're
- 19:30Speaker 1: simply not that savvy and we kind of don't want
- 19:32Speaker 1: that at all we're real heads which is why we're
- 19:35Speaker 1: not actually famous and so all of these shows that
- 19:39Speaker 1: that we hope you'll attend we plan them ourselves we
- 19:42Speaker 1: book them ourselves often Caitlin will even handle the ticketing
- 19:48Speaker 1: We're bringing the merch on our own. I'm designing the merch.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Caitlin manages a lot of the orders. When you buy
- 19:56Speaker 1: merch at the show, you're ordering from literally the two
- 19:59Speaker 1: of us. Often, sometimes a matron will bravely assist and
- 20:04Speaker 1: we're very grateful for that. But for the most part,
- 20:06Speaker 1: I think it's something I'm very proud of. through the
- 20:09Speaker 1: years of the Bechtel cast is it's like even when
- 20:12Speaker 1: the show itself has grown it's like it kind of
- 20:16Speaker 1: really just does at the end of the day we're
- 20:18Speaker 1: punk rock we used to we used to have an
- 20:21Speaker 1: editor and now it's like.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And now it's me. It was me for many years.
- 20:25Speaker 2: And then for a couple of years, we outsourced it
- 20:27Speaker 2: to someone else. And now it's me again. So we really,
- 20:30Speaker 2: we truly do most of the labor that is required
- 20:34Speaker 2: to make a podcast ourselves.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't think anyone else has ever done our
- 20:38Speaker 1: promotional materials. Definitely no one else has ever planned our touring.
- 20:42Speaker 3: And we take pride in that. We're like, I don't know.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm very proud to be A part of, you know,
- 20:47Speaker 1: kind of just like.
- 20:48Speaker 3: A lo-fi fun operation.
- 20:50Speaker 1: We want it to feel like you're hanging out with friends.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And if you're on the fence about getting a ticket, well,
- 20:55Speaker 1: there's people who have met at Bechtelkast shows who are
- 20:57Speaker 1: now married.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 3: So think about that.
- 21:00Speaker 1: If that's something you want, you could maybe meet, I mean, certainly.
- 21:06Speaker 3: A very hot audience, but also... sometimes hot and looking
- 21:10Speaker 3: to commit, looking to smash.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Or, yeah, or, or even looking to fuck. I mean, you,
- 21:15Speaker 1: we're not going to judge whatever you do it about.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You want to do.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Friends, lovers, permanent lovers.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Now we've been around for long enough that we can,
- 21:23Speaker 1: we can attest that all of the above and more. Yes.
- 21:26Speaker 1: And so this is going to be like a big celebration.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I'm basically a variety show about both like the last
- 21:33Speaker 1: 10 years of movies and, you know, representation and, therein,
- 21:38Speaker 1: but also just like the last 10 years of the show.
- 21:40Speaker 1: So if you're a fan of the show, new or old,
- 21:43Speaker 1: baby or 100, come to the show.
- 21:46Speaker 3: It'll be a blast. And we're very excited to hang
- 21:49Speaker 3: and to celebrate with you. Absolutely.
- 21:52Speaker 2: You can grab tickets for all of the shows that
- 21:55Speaker 2: currently have tickets on sale for on our Linktree, Linktree

- 22:39Speaker 1: That price has never changed. That money goes directly back
- 22:45Speaker 1: into the show is the best way to support the show.
- 22:47Speaker 3: As you know.
- 22:49Speaker 1: And we also have tried our best on these tour
- 22:51Speaker 1: dates to keep prices to tickets affordable during a recession.

- 22:59Speaker 1: to see you. And also, if you're a matron, Come

- 23:43Speaker 1: We're like, I mean, we've had fun shows in the past,
- 23:46Speaker 1: but like we've really thought this one out in a
- 23:48Speaker 1: way that like.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm excited.
- 23:50Speaker 1: It's my favorite kind of show where it's like, it's
- 23:52Speaker 1: going to be super fun.
- 23:53Speaker 3: It's going to be different in every city.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And like, we're going to, I think, surprise each other
- 23:57Speaker 1: with what we've like put together.
- 23:59Speaker 3: I can't wait. Oh, I can't wait. Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Is there anything else we need to, anything else you
- 24:03Speaker 2: want to plug? Anything else you want to say?
- 24:07Speaker 3: Not at the moment.
- 24:08Speaker 2: No.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I think, you know, if you haven't checked out the
- 24:14Speaker 1: tower or you haven't heard about it, I will be
- 24:17Speaker 1: continuing to bug you about it. But yeah, I highly
- 24:19Speaker 1: encourage you to check it out. And I'm so excited
- 24:25Speaker 1: to be able to share it with you.
- 24:26Speaker 3: And I hope you enjoy it.

- 24:52Speaker 2: And me, Caitlin Durante. The podcast is also produced by

- 24:57Speaker 3: And edited by Caitlin Durante. Ever heard of them?
- 25:00Speaker 2: That's me. And our logo and merch and all of
- 25:03Speaker 2: our artwork, in fact, are designed by Jamie Loftus. Ever
