Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: We must be cultural.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Look, a couple of weeks ago, Pauline Hands and gave
- 0:08Speaker 3: a big speech at the National Press Club and she
- 0:10Speaker 3: spoke about multiculturalism and wanting to turn Australia back into
- 0:14Speaker 3: a monocultural society.
- 0:16Speaker 1: What she said, at the center of this crisis is
- 0:19Speaker 1: the utterly flawed policy of multiculturalism. We cannot be a
- 0:26Speaker 1: multicultural society. We are a multi racial society, but we
- 0:31Speaker 1: must be mono cultural. Australians must live under the one
- 0:36Speaker 1: cultural umbrella.
- 0:38Speaker 4: How are you feeling about this? Just to get this right,
- 0:41Speaker 4: your parents were born here.
- 0:43Speaker 3: No, my parents were born in Singapore. They immigrated to
- 0:46Speaker 3: Australia in the seventies and so, you know, I have
- 0:48Speaker 3: some feelings about what was said at her National Press
- 0:53Speaker 3: Club speech.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Well go for it, you got the platform, you're live
- 0:56Speaker 4: on air. How do you feel about what Pauline hands looks.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I feel like Australia has always been multicultural and our
- 1:03Speaker 3: society would not be what it is today without it.
- 1:06Speaker 3: And you know, if you think about it. From First
- 1:08Speaker 3: Nations history, spanning sixty five thousand years, there were over
- 1:12Speaker 3: five hundred separate nations, each with their own traditions, and
- 1:16Speaker 3: languages and practices, and so you fast forward to today,
- 1:19Speaker 3: and just because I am who I am, let's talk
- 1:21Speaker 3: about this through the lens of food. We are known,
- 1:24Speaker 3: you know, for our love of good coffee the world over.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We have that thanks to Italian immigrants who brought espresso
- 1:29Speaker 3: machines over from World War Two. Yesterday we were talking
- 1:33Speaker 3: about how good a country takeaway Chinese restaurant is and
- 1:37Speaker 3: how did that start the gold Rush in the eighteen hundreds.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So with each migration that comes something that we didn't
- 1:44Speaker 3: know that we could do without, because culture is always evolving.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And you know, look in Australia, if you have a
- 1:50Speaker 3: hankering for almost any cuisine on the planet, chances are
- 1:53Speaker 3: that most of us are within striking distance of having
- 1:56Speaker 3: it for lunch bun me soufle, curry, schnitze or yum.
- 2:00Speaker 3: So you're guilty. I could literally go on forever. But
- 2:04Speaker 3: you know, obviously this is not just about food to me,
- 2:08Speaker 3: It's about exhaustion for those of us who are not
- 2:12Speaker 3: of an Anglo background. I think, you know, we are
- 2:14Speaker 3: beyond tired of having to justify our australianness and be
- 2:20Speaker 3: made to feel like we don't belong to the only
- 2:22Speaker 3: place that we call home.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I mean you were born here right thirteen
- 2:26Speaker 4: one oh six'. Five if you've got a, thought So
- 2:28Speaker 4: i'm interested in. THAT i, Mean i'm boring white guy
- 2:31Speaker 4: here when she comes out with his. STUFF i don't
- 2:33Speaker 4: agree with, it BUT i don't get like. Upset are
- 2:35Speaker 4: you upset by what you?
- 2:37Speaker 3: HEAR i am, tired you, know like you there. Are
- 2:42Speaker 3: we live an entire life, where you, KNOW i walk
- 2:45Speaker 3: down the street on any given day and someone will, Say,
- 2:46Speaker 3: wow Your english is really. Good you still got, That
- 2:49Speaker 3: you still get. It i'm forty. Four i've grown up
- 2:51Speaker 3: here my entire. Life you're ON tv ON, tv you,
- 2:55Speaker 3: know and to have, to you, know sort of say,
- 2:58Speaker 3: oh you, know but where are you really? From it's, like,
- 2:59Speaker 3: No i'm really from. Here my race happens to Be.
- 3:04Speaker 3: CHINESE i happen to be you, know my roots come
- 3:07Speaker 3: from somewhere. Else but CULTURALLY i am about As australian
- 3:10Speaker 3: as you could. Get absolutely leave this. Place my husband
- 3:14Speaker 3: wirrying having to explain.
- 3:15Speaker 5: That, yeah my husband is like his parents Are, italian,
- 3:19Speaker 5: Right and so Sometimes i'll on the radio, say, oh,
- 3:22Speaker 5: yeah my Husband's italian and he said to, Me he's,
- 3:25Speaker 5: like you keep saying, that But I'm i'm Not. Italian
- 3:28Speaker 5: i've never lived In, italy Like i'm Just ozzy and
- 3:32Speaker 5: he's sort of it's not, offended but he, yeah it's
- 3:35Speaker 5: exactly what you're. Saying it's, like how long DO i
- 3:37Speaker 5: have to be here Before i'm just An? Assy and it's, like,
- 3:42Speaker 5: YEAH i don't think like, That, NO i get.
- 3:44Speaker 6: You we Had pauline on the. Show we've had on
- 3:46Speaker 6: the show a couple of.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Times she did say when you pressed, her she's not
- 3:50Speaker 4: picking any particular.
- 3:51Speaker 6: Race to just have An. Australia IF i can try
- 3:54Speaker 6: and defend her.
- 3:55Speaker 5: There, yeah she's been questioned about that speech how lot
- 3:58Speaker 5: since she said, it and she's sort of saying that
- 4:01Speaker 5: she's more trying to say that she just wants her
- 4:03Speaker 5: to be An australian. Value but she's still calling it
- 4:06Speaker 5: mono culture AND i think that's where she's not really
- 4:10Speaker 5: explaining it, well because clearly culture is food and all
- 4:14Speaker 5: these amazing things That australians really love and we don't
- 4:18Speaker 5: want to lose it no matter where we come.
- 4:20Speaker 3: From you, know we are an inherently, multiple multicultural place
- 4:23Speaker 3: we've just discussed that have been. Forever but you, know
- 4:27Speaker 3: the issue is that what she's expecting is for there
- 4:30Speaker 3: to be a uniformity of of you, know the way
- 4:34Speaker 3: that we look for. Example BUT i, mean we can
- 4:38Speaker 3: all agree that there are values that we are so
- 4:41Speaker 3: proud of of Being. Australian we want to See australia,
- 4:43Speaker 3: exceed we want to See australia, Succeed so there are
- 4:47Speaker 3: shared values. There BUT i think that there's a mistake
- 4:50Speaker 3: in HER i, mean she cherry picked very specific examples
- 4:53Speaker 3: of you, KNOW i want to go back to An
- 4:54Speaker 3: australia that is you, Know Paul hogan and you, know
- 4:57Speaker 3: and all of these sort of specific examples that you,
- 4:59Speaker 3: know in all, FAIRNESS i think they are nostalgic things
- 5:03Speaker 3: that she is fond of that she can recall from
- 5:06Speaker 3: a time in her. Life but that's not an accurate
- 5:08Speaker 3: snapshot of even that particular time In australian. History like
- 5:13Speaker 3: the same era Of Paul hogan Was Marsha, hines and
- 5:17Speaker 3: Was Ernie, dingo and with so many other things that
- 5:19Speaker 3: she chose to selectively, Forget and so by not by,
- 5:24Speaker 3: omitting what you're doing is, erasing you, know the contribution
- 5:29Speaker 3: of so many other cultures and perspectives and, values and
- 5:33Speaker 3: by doing, that you are saying that we are not as.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Important all, right.
- 5:38Speaker 6: We're going to take your. Calls do you agree With?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Melissa maybe you've got a multicultural, background of this kind
- 5:43Speaker 4: of talk is upset you as, well.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Because it's been everywhere in the news like this talk
- 5:48Speaker 5: of a mono, culture like hinting that that white culture
- 5:53Speaker 5: is the one that's gonna. Succeed so there's so many
- 5:55Speaker 5: people that are not in that.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Girl the whole soccer is, example you, know and obviously
- 6:00Speaker 3: there was there was the. BACKLASH i think the soccer
- 6:03Speaker 3: is an amazing example of the difference between you, know
- 6:07Speaker 3: the uniformity that she's looking for and sort of a shared.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Goal if you look at the soccer is eclectic from absolutely,
- 6:14Speaker 3: everywhere all gunning for the same. Goal and that's what
- 6:18Speaker 3: this country. Is we're from absolutely, Everywhere we use all
- 6:21Speaker 3: of our skills from, everywhere with everywhere we've come from
- 6:24Speaker 3: for the same, goal which is that we want to
- 6:26Speaker 3: See australia excel on the global.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Scale all, right do you want to agree With, melissa
- 6:31Speaker 4: back her, up or maybe you want to stand up For.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Pauline you can call us right now thirteen one oh six.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Five button's not we MUST i hit it twice.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Because we want to hear more from your one.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Direction we must be, cultural.
- 6:53Speaker 6: All, right we're taking your calls thirty.
- 6:54Speaker 5: One we need to get a little bit of the
- 6:56Speaker 5: grab where she stumbles on the.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Word So melissa Ly, on you Know Asian, australian and
- 7:03Speaker 4: you've been upset by the Stuff pauling's.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Absolutely you KNOW i was in my early teens When
- 7:09Speaker 3: pauline first sort of came onto the political, scene AND
- 7:11Speaker 3: i just remember feeling, like oh my, gosh what is
- 7:14Speaker 3: my adult life going to be like If i'm going
- 7:16Speaker 3: to you, know feel fear in the only home THAT
- 7:20Speaker 3: i then were.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Shining she got famous for saying we're in danger of
- 7:24Speaker 5: being swamped By. Asians that's with her. Nineties it's you, know.
- 7:28Speaker 3: She goes after different religious or racial groups over the,
- 7:32Speaker 3: years and you, know when you're in the firing, line
- 7:35Speaker 3: when it's your, history it's your, roots it. Hurts there's
- 7:39Speaker 3: a deep sadness that comes with that because being told
- 7:42Speaker 3: to go back to where you came. FROM i come from.
- 7:44Speaker 3: HERE i love this. Country the cultural aspects of what
- 7:48Speaker 3: it is to Be australian are inherent in WHO i. Am,
- 7:52Speaker 3: RIGHT i can't go anywhere.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Else, no of course.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Not and we're taken your calls because the last week
- 7:56Speaker 4: it's all been about she said she wants, monoculture not.
- 8:00Speaker 6: MULTICULTURAL i. Stumbled, then just Like follween.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Thirteen one six y, five feel free to have you
- 8:06Speaker 4: say you might disagree With, melissa or you completely agree with.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Her it will go To john open forum for. Discussion you,
- 8:13Speaker 3: know everybody's opinions are, welcome all, Right.
- 8:15Speaker 6: John you're on go for, it.
- 8:16Speaker 7: Mate Hey, John, hi how are? You AND i That
- 8:22Speaker 7: n'm one hundred percent behind You. Melissa i'm A maldees
- 8:26Speaker 7: descendant in this. Country the, problem LIKE i, think the
- 8:30Speaker 7: PROBLEM i have With pauline is most of what she's
- 8:33Speaker 7: saying really comes over as the seat she's saying that
- 8:36Speaker 7: she's not really, after you, know changing the fabric of
- 8:39Speaker 7: the country and we are multi, racial and then but
- 8:42Speaker 7: we can't have the multicultural and she claims that she's
- 8:45Speaker 7: not targeting one individual. Culture and then you're also by
- 8:48Speaker 7: the same, token you, know dose stunts like being the
- 8:51Speaker 7: burker or you, know say That muslims are, intrinsically you,
- 8:55Speaker 7: know unable to assimilate, it so that you you start
- 9:00Speaker 7: us in this language that, says you, know we're allowing
- 9:03Speaker 7: you to be who you want to be as long
- 9:05Speaker 7: as you also. Assimilate and what does that? Mean, like
- 9:08Speaker 7: what do assimilate? Mean what do we? Assimilate my view
- 9:11Speaker 7: on the whole thing is is that we have a.
- 9:13Speaker 7: Law we all should abide by the. Law the law
- 9:15Speaker 7: should be as thin as possible to allow for our personal.
- 9:18Speaker 7: Freedoms that's what we. Value that's what it means to
- 9:21Speaker 7: be An australian is that you can worship who you,
- 9:24Speaker 7: want you can dress how you, like you can speak
- 9:26Speaker 7: whatever language you feel most comfortable. With, ultimately people generally
- 9:31Speaker 7: tend to assimilate because that's just how you're living in the.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Culture there's no point in making an issue out of.
- 9:37Speaker 7: That and if you do make an issue out of,
- 9:38Speaker 7: that you're just sort of dog whistling for blatant racism
- 9:41Speaker 7: while hiding underneath in the year of what you're trying
- 9:45Speaker 7: to present as being, reasonable and it's not. Reasonable, YEAH i.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Agree with you. WHOLEHEARTEDLY i think you, know politicians Like
- 9:52Speaker 3: hanson are really good at creating division and fracturing you,
- 9:56Speaker 3: know us from each other so that we can't bond
- 10:00Speaker 3: together and realize that all we really we want the same.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Things you, know we want to Be. Australian we want
- 10:05Speaker 3: to be, here will want to see the economy. Succeed
- 10:08Speaker 3: we want to see and celebrate our sporting and you,
- 10:11Speaker 3: know artistic achievements across the. Planet there are certain fundamental
- 10:15Speaker 3: things that, yes we all need to agree.
- 10:17Speaker 6: On, yeah AND i think it's fair.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Enough if you don't agree with like democracy or our
- 10:20Speaker 4: rule of law and you want certain crazy laws or,
- 10:23Speaker 4: something then you shouldn't BE i, mean.
- 10:25Speaker 3: We have lost four women this week to men who
- 10:30Speaker 3: they have, known and that's tragically. Sad One south One
- 10:33Speaker 3: South asian To australians And first. Nations can we agree
- 10:37Speaker 3: that that's not? Okay, yes we can agree that.
- 10:39Speaker 5: That's Not we're not kicking all men out of the.
- 10:42Speaker 6: Country but it.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Is an Inherently australian thing to want to protect our
- 10:46Speaker 3: women and to protect our. Children and if we can
- 10:49Speaker 3: agree on, that there are many other things that we
- 10:51Speaker 3: can agree. On our dad Is, Australian.
- 10:53Speaker 6: Carl you want to have a chat To, melissa go
- 10:55Speaker 6: for a.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Maze.
- 10:56Speaker 8: Yeah, LOOK i think there's a lot of hype out
- 10:58Speaker 8: in the media that they'll twist and turn a lot
- 11:02Speaker 8: of the words that are said out.
- 11:03Speaker 5: There.
- 11:03Speaker 8: Now for, Me i'm A european born that lived In
- 11:07Speaker 8: australia SINCE i was three and a half years. Old
- 11:09Speaker 8: but my understanding of what she means by that is that,
- 11:12Speaker 8: yes when you come To, australia you live like The
- 11:14Speaker 8: australians bas and yes you bring your cultural, things but
- 11:18Speaker 8: you don't bring the extremisms or all the bad things
- 11:21Speaker 8: that we don't want here in the. Country that's The
- 11:24Speaker 8: australian ways that we all look after each, other you,
- 11:26Speaker 8: know you care for each. Other you, know that's The australian.
- 11:29Speaker 8: Way but that's what she doesn't want to bring those
- 11:32Speaker 8: other you, know those stupid you, know well that's from my.
- 11:36Speaker 8: Country well those if you if you do those things
- 11:39Speaker 8: in your, country that's that's your. Countries like, us will
- 11:41Speaker 8: we go, overseas we have to respect respect the laws over,
- 11:44Speaker 8: there and it's the same. Here no different that you
- 11:46Speaker 8: come To, australia you've got to respect The australian, laws
- 11:49Speaker 8: not sit there and twist it and try to make
- 11:50Speaker 8: it into something. Else and like you, said if they're
- 11:53Speaker 8: going to bring in a for instance like This sharia
- 11:56Speaker 8: or some of them are extremisms and you, know the
- 11:58Speaker 8: women are subjugated and.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Shouldn't shouldn't she then call it mono law like she's
- 12:04Speaker 5: saying mono.
- 12:05Speaker 8: Culture, unfortunately that's maybe the thing that she may maybe
- 12:09Speaker 8: has not the.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Best but, unfortunately as a, politician you need to be
- 12:13Speaker 3: highly specific about how you communicate and what you intend
- 12:17Speaker 3: because you are influencing a constituency that are potentially voting
- 12:20Speaker 3: for you to be in power to Influence australia even,
- 12:24Speaker 3: more and that is.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Dangerous it's not great with her expressing herself of.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Specificity all, Right, maria what are your thoughts? Here go for.
- 12:34Speaker 3: It Morning, Maria, morning, morning.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Guys totally agree with the two other. CALLERS i want
- 12:41Speaker 2: to put a question out to Miss. Hanson i'm an
- 12:44Speaker 2: actual White aboriginal that's brought Up european AS i was.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Adopted where would she send?
- 12:52Speaker 5: Me it's a very good.
- 12:55Speaker 7: Question, well what's.
- 12:58Speaker 2: What she's going to put me in Because i've brought up.
- 13:00Speaker 2: HERE i was born In. Sydney, yeah so you, know
- 13:05Speaker 2: and what about these sovereign. Citizens they don't follow the.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Laws they do their own. Thing, yeah the majority of
- 13:12Speaker 2: them are.
- 13:12Speaker 3: White you, KNOW i think all of us just want
- 13:15Speaker 3: to FEEL i agree with. YOU i think all of
- 13:18Speaker 3: us just want to feel seen and be safe in
- 13:21Speaker 3: the country that we call. Home AND i feel like
- 13:25Speaker 3: there's a danger in, making you, know different parts of
- 13:30Speaker 3: who we are feel like we shouldn't be, here or
- 13:33Speaker 3: that we have to justify our existence to the nth
- 13:37Speaker 3: degree our entire. Lives it's exhausting.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And without Multicultural i'm not having The lebanese. FOOD i,
- 13:44Speaker 4: Like i'm not having That french. Omelet you tried to
- 13:46Speaker 4: make this.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Sport if you, don't like, course don't eat our.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Food they boring would this country be if there was
- 13:54Speaker 5: only one, Culture.
- 13:56Speaker 4: There'll be no Al, jarna WHICH i say is just
- 13:58Speaker 4: open up in my area if.
- 13:59Speaker 3: You really think about. It, globally where is where is?
- 14:03Speaker 3: Monoculture which To Japan North, Korea japan's.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Monoculture they don't have, immigration which.
- 14:11Speaker 5: It kind of. Is but they've also got like this
- 14:14Speaker 5: thousands of years of just untouched like, culture Whereas australia's
- 14:18Speaker 5: Never they're.
- 14:20Speaker 4: In big trouble because people aren't having kids over there
- 14:24Speaker 4: in immigration.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Anyway let's bring it back To. Australia please give us a.
- 14:28Speaker 3: CALL i want to hear what people. THINK i think
- 14:30Speaker 3: it's really a really important discussion to.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Have, now you could have our
- 14:34Speaker 3: Writers australians currently
