Latest / Bible Chat Devotional / April 17 - The Company You Keep
Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, April 17th.
- 0:11The company you keep. One of the hardest truths to
- 0:14accept is that some relationships are built more on
- 0:17convenience than love. Proverbs chapter 14 verse 20
- 0:21says the poor is disliked even by his neighbor, but the rich
- 0:25has many friends. It is an honest observation
- 0:28about human nature. People are often drawn to what
- 0:32benefits them. Popularity, status, success, and
- 0:35influence can attract a crowd, but not every crowd is made of
- 0:39true friends. Romans chapter one goes even
- 0:42deeper. It shows what happens when
- 0:45people know truth but refuse to honor God.
- 0:48Hearts become darkened, priorities become twisted, and
- 0:51people begin to call normal what God calls broken.
- 0:55That matters when we think about friendships and influence
- 0:58because the company you keep will shape what starts to feel
- 1:01acceptable to you. We all want to belong.
- 1:05We all want people who understand us and stay close.
- 1:08But not every friendship is healthy just because it is
- 1:10familiar. Some relationships push you
- 1:13toward compromise. Some make sin feel casual.
- 1:17Some train you to chase approval instead of truth.
- 1:20Others strengthen your faith, sharpen your thinking, and
- 1:22encourage your love for God. The question is not just who
- 1:26likes me. The deeper question is who is
- 1:29helping me become more faithful? Who is drawing me toward
- 1:32honesty, purity, courage, and worship?
- 1:36And just as important, what kind of influence am I becoming in
- 1:39the lives of others? Following Jesus sometimes means
- 1:43you will not fit in everywhere. It may even mean standing apart
- 1:47from people whose values do not align with His.
- 1:50That can feel lonely for a moment, but it protects your
- 1:53heart from drifting. God never asks you to trade
- 1:56truth for acceptance. True friendship is not built on
- 1:59status. It is built on truth, loyalty,
- 2:03and the kind of love that stays steady even when life gets hard.
- 2:07Ask God to surround you with people who help you honor Him,
- 2:10and ask Him to make you that kind of person, too.
- 2:13Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 2:16being the friend who never leaves me.
- 2:18Give me wisdom in my relationships and help me
- 2:21recognize the difference between shallow approval and godly
- 2:24friendship. Surround me with people who
- 2:27encourage me to honor You and make me a person who reflects
- 2:31Your truth, love, and faithfulness to others.
- 2:35Help me care more about your approval than the approval of
- 2:37the crowd. In Jesus name, Amen.
- 2:44What if you could rise up and declare with full spiritual
- 2:47authority, I shall not die, but live?

- 3:42Now I invite you to spend time with God in today's three-year
- 3:45Bible reading plan. Proverbs chapter 14 verse 20
- 3:51World English Bible The poor person is shunned even by his
- 3:54own neighbor, but the rich person has many friends.
- 3:57Romans chapter one World English Bible Paul, a servant of Jesus
- 4:03Christ called to be an apostle, set apart for the good news of
- 4:07God, which he promised before through his prophets in the Holy
- 4:10Scriptures. Concerning his Son, who was born
- 4:14of the offspring of David according to the flesh, who was
- 4:17declared to be the Son of God, with power according to the
- 4:20spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead.
- 4:24Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we received grace and
- 4:28apostleship for obedience of faith among all the nations, for
- 4:31His name's sake, among whom you are also called to belong to
- 4:34Jesus Christ. To all who are in Rome, beloved
- 4:38of God, called to be Saints, grace to you and peace from God
- 4:42our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1st.
- 4:45I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, that your
- 4:49faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.
- 4:52For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the good
- 4:55news of His Son. How unceasingly I make mention
- 4:59of you always in my prayers, requesting if by any means now
- 5:03at last I may be prospered by the will of God to come to you.
- 5:08For I long to see you that I may impart to you some spiritual
- 5:11gift to the end that you may be established, that is, that I
- 5:15with you, may be encouraged in you, each of us, by the other's
- 5:18faith, both yours and mine. Now I don't desire to have you
- 5:23unaware, brothers, that I often plan to come to you, and was
- 5:27hindered so far that I might have some fruit among you also,
- 5:31even as among the rest of the Gentiles.
- 5:34I am debtor both to Greeks and to foreigners, both to the wise
- 5:37and to the foolish. So as much as is in me, I am
- 5:41eager to preach the good news to you also who are in Rome.
- 5:45For I am not ashamed of the good news of Christ, because it is
- 5:48the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, for
- 5:52the Jew 1st, and also for the Greek.
- 5:55For in it is revealed God's righteousness from faith to
- 5:57faith, as it is written. But the righteous shall live by
- 6:01faith. For the wrath of God is revealed
- 6:04from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness
- 6:08of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that
- 6:12which is known of God is revealed in them, for God
- 6:15revealed it to them. For the invisible things of Him
- 6:19since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being
- 6:22perceived through the things that are made, even His
- 6:25everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse.
- 6:30Because knowing God, they didn't glorify Him as God and didn't
- 6:34give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their
- 6:37senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be
- 6:41wise, they became fools and traded the glory of the
- 6:44incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of
- 6:47corruptible man and of birds, 4 footed animals and creeping
- 6:52things. Therefore God also gave them up
- 6:56in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, that their bodies
- 6:59should be dishonored among themselves, who exchanged the
- 7:02truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the
- 7:05creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.
- 7:10Amen. For this reason God gave them up
- 7:12to vile passions for their women.
- 7:14Change the natural function into that which is against nature.
- 7:19Likewise also the men leaving the natural function of the
- 7:22woman burned in their lust toward one another.
- 7:25Men doing what is inappropriate with men, and receiving in
- 7:29themselves the due penalty of their error, even as they refuse
- 7:33to have God in their knowledge. God gave them up to a reprobate
- 7:36mind to do those things which are not fitting, being filled
- 7:40with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness,
- 7:44covetousness, malice, full of envy, murder, strife, deceit,
- 7:48evil habits, secret slanderers, backbutters, hateful to God,
- 7:52insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil things,
- 7:56disobedient to parents without understanding, covenant Breakers
- 8:00without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful.
- 8:03Who, knowing the ordinance of God that those who practice such
- 8:08things are worthy of death, not only do the same but also
- 8:11approve of those who practice them.
