- 0:00Warning. The following podcast contains an entertaining look at astronomy, physics, and
- 0:04space news throughout the known universe. Listeners have been known to learn about astronomical
- 0:08phenomenon the scientific method and expand their vocabulary to include terms like quasar asterism and
- 0:13uranus. Listen, that's your own risk. Go ahead. Where made of
- 0:23Stars, Made of stars, Made stars Stars. You could be from Highllywood,
- 0:36New Mexico, Mars. Where stars women us, We are made of
- 0:54stars. I'm West, Carol Join, I'm a good friend. Doctor Sean
- 0:58Cruizen from Columbus State univer Versities, Coca Cola Space Science Center. Hey Sean,
- 1:03good morning West. This has been an eventful morning in space science.
- 1:08I am happy to be here to discuss the ramifications of this very interesting day
- 1:14with you on our podcast Made of Stars. This is another one of those
- 1:17days where we have to kind of navigate our way through the cow pasture a
- 1:22little bit, because we have some some news stories that I would say,
- 1:29even as recently as I don't know two years ago, maybe even a year
- 1:34ago, we would have just kind of blown right past it and not even
- 1:36brought it up. And certainly five ten years ago this would have just been
- 1:41like on the cover of those magazines when you're going through the grocery store,
- 1:45or those are the bat Boy magazines. They still have those. I haven't
- 1:48seen those in a long time. Whatever that was so normally in the past,
- 1:56we would not have even acknowledged this in any way. However, as
- 2:01we have pointed out for the past several weeks, over the past few or
- 2:06seven past a few months, several times I guess the fact that this is
- 2:12now news for a few different reasons. And while we have this little side
- 2:17story to go with it, it is part of the bigger story, right.
- 2:23It just has become that. And I don't really understand how we got
- 2:27to this point, but we've gotten to this point. So the two things
- 2:30that we feel one absolutely relevant. NASA's independent study team had a press conference
- 2:38earlier. We delayed recordings so that you and I could watch the press conference.
- 2:45I thought it was overall, and I didn't. I missed part of
- 2:47it because I had a phone call that came in that I needed to take,
- 2:51so I missed part of the Q and A. But however, what
- 2:53I saw of the actual beginning of the press conference all relevant. All things
- 2:58that we need to know, considering the fact that there's a lot of conversation
- 3:01about UAPs formerly known as UFOs, and there's been some credible people talking about
- 3:08it. That's why this has become relevant here in the last few months.
- 3:13Now, this all comes a day after these quote unquote alien bodies that look
- 3:22like mummified I don't know, science projects. They look like something a kid
- 3:27made to turn in at school. These things show up in Mexico and they
- 3:30were being presented to their Congress and not the first time these things have shown
- 3:38up anywhere, but for some reason, and I guess because of what's going
- 3:43on with UAPs, this became a major news story yesterday on all the networks
- 3:49all over the place. So let's start. I don't know whichever one of
- 3:52these we want to start with. Do we want to start with the fake
- 3:54aliens or do we want to start with the pill real aliens? I mean,
- 4:00where do we want to go with this? I don't know. But
- 4:02it's a weird world we live in now, Sean Kruzen, it is West
- 4:10Carroll, and I'm just so proud to be here at this moment to share
- 4:14this time with you. In history, there's no one outside when I have
- 4:16this conversation with September twenty twenty three, and this is what we have to
- 4:26talk about. That's right, that's what we have. We have paper machee
- 4:30Aliens, ladies and gentlemen. If you are new to this podcast or just
- 4:36have not listened to enough to figure out who and who I am and what
- 4:41I do, let me just say this for the record, ladies and gentlemen.
- 4:45I am a faculty member at a university. I have a PhD in
- 4:50astrophysics, and I teach people, both college students and the general public about
- 4:59what we know from science about space. So let me step on that platform
- 5:05just a moment. You know, West and I like to have a really
- 5:09good time on this show. In general, we like to cut things up
- 5:13and take a lighter, a lighter approach to examining space news. But recently
- 5:17we've had to insert a new, you know, quasi segment into our show,
- 5:23which we first titled They're Saying Weird Things in DC, but then we
- 5:28had to modify that title because they always say weird things in DC. We
- 5:30had to modify that title to say They're saying weird things in DC about UAPs
- 5:38Unidentified Anomalous phenomena, and we've run several stories, and you know, quasi
- 5:45segments on our podcast You're Made of Stars, where we take a lighter hearted
- 5:48look at space news. We've had to run several segments and just say,
- 5:54hey, they're saying this, so it's news. So we're gonna talk about
- 6:00it for a minute, and then we're going to go back and talk about
- 6:01the James Webb space telescope. That's literally my approach this morning. But I
- 6:08will tell you, within the last twenty four hours it's been extra weird.
- 6:14And so before we get to the they're saying weird things in DC about UAP
- 6:18segment, they're saying really weird things in the capital of Mexico, ladies and
- 6:26gentlemen, I would point you to a story from MSN dot com. It
- 6:32is not the only story of this nature, but MSN has done a very
- 6:35good job of within the last twenty four hours going out and actually talking to
- 6:41scientists about the so called presentation that wasn't done in front of the legislature of
- 6:49the Nation of Mexico within the last twenty four hours, where alien bodies that
- 6:59were alleged to have been uncovered in the deserts of Peru, the high deserts
- 7:05of Peru, where the Nazca lines are located. If you don't know what
- 7:14those are, just google it Nazca lines. So these bodies were allegedly excavated
- 7:19from that area back in twenty seventeen. And then we're being presented before the
- 7:27legislature of Mexico, an actual nation, a pretty prominent nation on this planet
- 7:32that we live on. The governmental officials were being presented with mummies of what
- 7:40we're purported to be creatures not of this earth. I am gonna notably say
- 7:46right now that I am not aware of one scrap of scientific evidence of any
- 7:53kind that these were in any way legitimate, And neither did they discuss in
- 8:00this presentation in the Mexican legislature any evidence that these were actual, real,
- 8:09non human mummies. Ladies and gentlemen. The presenters made various suggestions that DNA
- 8:18evidence had been extracted and other things, but they didn't actually turn these mummies
- 8:22over to any kind of scientific authority of any kind to perform any kind of
- 8:28analysis. So I know that you've probably seen on your major news carriers and
- 8:33hell on facebooks that alien mummies have been revealed to the world in Mexico.
- 8:41Let me also remind you and thank you MSN for doing this good research.
- 8:48Let me also remind you that the Peruvian prosecutor's office for the country, the
- 8:54nation's prosecutor's office, back in twenty seventeen, found that the bodies were actually
- 9:00quote recently manufactured dolls which had been covered with a mixture of paper and synthetic
- 9:07glue to simulate the presence of skin unquote credit MSN reporting. So it's not
- 9:16even like these were new mummies. Yeah, it's a paper mache mummies that
- 9:24were rolled out in front of the Peruvians back in twenty seventeen and they said
- 9:28no, all right, So well there's that. Well, and before we
- 9:33dive into where all of this becomes more relevant, because there is a connection
- 9:39to what's been going on here in the States, in in our government,
- 9:43in our Congress. So we're gonna we're gonna talk about Ryan Graves in a
- 9:48second. I just want to quickly give you know, a little on my
- 9:52resume, because you laid yours out to make it clear what our role your
- 9:58role is here on this show as far as what you do. You're an
- 10:01actual scientist, I you know, an award winning broadcaster, right, a
- 10:07humorist, and a guy who comes on here and tries to play the role
- 10:11of surrogate for the listener. I want to be the guy who can ask
- 10:13the questions that maybe they want to ask, but they're not on the show.
- 10:18They're not dialed right in to ask the questions. So that's what I
- 10:20try to do. And then I make uranus and you know, mooning jokes
- 10:24do that kind of thing from time to time, So that's my role in
- 10:28it. Now. When I'm watching the news and I see kind of a
- 10:31brief summary of the news stories for the day and they mentioned, you know,
- 10:37some politician, or they say the word impeachment, or they say,
- 10:41you know, various topics of the day, and then they just throw in
- 10:43the middle of it a picture of an alien body and then they say,
- 10:48oh yeah, and this was presented to Mexican Congress, and then they move
- 10:50on to the next story quickly, and I go hit the rewind button on
- 10:54that remote real quick. For me, I miss something there. There was
- 10:58something there that seemed to go by much more quickly than it should have,
- 11:01and I feel like it should have been maybe the top story if there was
- 11:07any credibility to it. And then of course I sent you a you know,
- 11:11a picture this morning of this thing and said, I guess we're gonna
- 11:15be talking about this today. And I feel like because we have to just
- 11:18a little bit. Now you've you've perfectly explained why there's many, many,
- 11:24many reasons. Well, we should start at being a skeptic, and I
- 11:26think that's where a lot of science should come from, is being that skeptic
- 11:31right away. And then we've got other reasons to be skeptical, you know,
- 11:35starting in twenty seventeen in Peru, and you know these paper things and
- 11:41then like I kind of think maybe they blew up a balloon and then put
- 11:45the paper machet on it and then pop the balloon. Maybe that was what
- 11:46they did. I don't know. I don't know how they how you would
- 11:48create such a thing, but it sounds like an interesting project. Now this
- 11:52becomes really important because they brought in a spell, actual guest for this thing,
- 12:01perhaps to give it more credibility. I don't know, but maybe this
- 12:05is someone who shouldn't have some concerns about his own credibility because he was there.
- 12:11Yes, So now we get to where the line gets a tad gray.
- 12:20Let's see what I did there. Yeah, gray like aliens, like
- 12:22gray grace. Anyway, the line gets a tad gray here because the United
- 12:28States has been doing its own investigations into unidentified aerial phenomenon or UAPs, and
- 12:35earlier this summer there were some very credible witnesses who walked up in front of
- 12:39the United States Congress and testified before Congress about various videos that were captured by
- 12:46naval jets encountering basically craft is a good word for them, that they could
- 12:54not explain they were performing anomalous maneuvers and did not behave according to the understood
- 13:00laws of aeronautics and flight. So then that peaked folks's interest because that constitutes
- 13:09some level of physical evidence. One of the people who testified before Congress earlier
- 13:16the summer was a naval aviator by the name of Ryan Graves, US fighter
- 13:22pilot and someone who actually encountered these objects with his aircraft and recorded some of
- 13:30the video somehow. Ryan Graves, a seemingly reputable witness when he testified before
- 13:37the United States Congress as a naval aviator, was present in Mexico when they
- 13:45unveiled the paper mache aliens. Ryan, who are your handler's buddy? I
- 13:52mean, you have some interesting and important things to maybe add to a conversation
- 13:58about UAPs, And somehow you got doped into being in Mexico for this shin
- 14:05dig Ryan, buddy, buddy friend, Hire West Carroll as your handler for
- 14:11all media relations. He's right here on this podcast. He's waiting for your
- 14:16call. Just reach out to us. Through the connections from the Mate of
- 14:20Stars podcast. Ryan Graves and West Carol can keep you away from these sort
- 14:26of events, just like Jerry McGuire on the movie kept you know, his
- 14:31his clients out of trouble anyway. So well, let me just also the
- 14:35data. So the data. I was I was gonna use a different quote,
- 14:41but I like that one that works very well. But I was gonna
- 14:45say, I think you know Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss once said,
- 14:48come on man, come on man, what are we doing here?
- 14:52How did you end up there? But anyway, were you just down having
- 14:56a vacation in Mexico City and somebody came by and say, hey, aren't
- 15:01you Ryan Graves? You want to come talk to Congress? Well, sure
- 15:03I do. And then they unveiled paper machee aliens before you know what was
- 15:07going on, because I don't know why the heck else you were there,
- 15:11Ryan Graves, buddy. Respect by the way, respect, you're a naval
- 15:16aviator. Yeah, you land aircraft on the decks of aircraft carriers in the
- 15:22dark. Yeah. One of the highest human achievements possible. So I'm given
- 15:28respect, Ryan Graves. Well, and it's important with you on that stage.
- 15:31Yeah. Why it's important to note that he understands that he shouldn't have
- 15:35been there, right, I mean, he's at a point now where he's
- 15:39acknowledging I don't know how this happened. He said that he had accepted this
- 15:46invitation quote hoping to keep up the momentum of government interest in pilot experiences with
- 15:54UAP. Again, this is a quote from MSN dot com and they're story.
- 16:00He further goes on to say, unquote Unfortunately, yesterday's demonstration was a
- 16:06huge step backwards for this issue. He wrote on Twitter, I will continue
- 16:11to raise awareness of UAP as an urgent matter for aerospace safety, national city,
- 16:18national security, and science. I'm sorry for my bad reading there aerospace
- 16:22safety, national security, and science, but I am deeply disappointed by this
- 16:26unsubstantiated stunt on the right side, Ryan Graves, on the right side of
- 16:33history there, Why were you there? So we know, we know there's
- 16:40has been talk of, uh, you know, the government has the aliens,
- 16:45they've got the bodies, they've had them Roswell Area fifty one, all
- 16:48this talk, all this conspiracy talk for so long. I love that movie.
- 16:53By the way, I love that movie. It was great, it
- 16:56was fun. So let's let's just now a minute, say, I guess
- 17:03maybe the timing of yesterday's event in Mexico probably not a coincidence that it happened
- 17:11the day before what happened with the NASA's independent study team today, however,
- 17:21I just can't help but wonder, like, were they just trying to get
- 17:25extra eyes and extra attention on what was going on in Mexico by inviting him?
- 17:30Or is I'm sorry, and I know I sound like one of those
- 17:33guys, but is someone trying to destroy his credibility? And I guess I'm
- 17:38just asking this from the again, I'm the surrogate. I'm playing the role
- 17:44of the audience member. Is someone just trying to blow up this guy's credibility?
- 17:48When and therefore being one of the solid potential witnesses and all of this
- 17:52important to testimony, thereby blowing up the whole argument. Now we got some
- 17:57answers on some of what's going on with NASA's independent study team and where that's
- 18:03all going, But I can't help it just go. It just seems like
- 18:07a hit job on a guy, doesn't it? A hit job on not
- 18:12just a guy, but an entire effort to with any scientific credibility actually look
- 18:19into something that seems on the surface unusual. Ladies and gentlemen, Once again,
- 18:27I'm going to be cautious when waiting into this freaking swamp, and I'm
- 18:32just going to say that I speak with confidence about the things I know from
- 18:37science, and I only speak with speculation and humor about those things that of
- 18:42which I do not know because there is no data for my eyes to see.
- 18:47So I'm going to speak with speculation and humor on the next point,
- 18:51which is simply this, Why the heck did this come out? Within less
- 18:56than twenty four hours of the announcements from the committee by the National Aeronautics and
- 19:04Space Administration looking into the phenomena of UAP at press conference which have been announced
- 19:15well ahead of the actual event, and somehow paper mache aliens are rolled out
- 19:22in a foreign country less than twenty four hours, or at least it hits
- 19:26the news cycle less than twenty four hours prior to the actual scientists and scientific
- 19:33investigators from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration coming out and trying to talk with
- 19:38some form of rationality about this issue of UAPs, ladies and gentlemen. I
- 19:45personally, opinion, do not think that was a coincidence. There, I've
- 19:49said it. And now, this is what we do on podcasts, right,
- 19:52We speculate, we start conspiracy theories, and I don't know if I'm
- 19:56doing that, but I don't want to start a conspiracy theory. But it
- 20:00just seems weird. Wess that it was less than a day yeah, before
- 20:04nassa's UAP panel begins their public announcements. What do you think, my friend?
- 20:10Because we are simply speculating here, and we are, and I mean
- 20:12that's why I asked the question. The timing of it is just really too
- 20:17convenient. I don't know now, I understand without very clear connected dot evidence,
- 20:25but I do feel like I could get my board out and get my
- 20:27red string and I could start connecting things. But you know, it is
- 20:33it is a very strange timing for all of it. And to have such
- 20:38an important part of this testimony to be basically put out on display with the
- 20:45paper machee aliens, it just it. Anyway. The event today, though,
- 20:52sort of laid a few things out for us, gave us a little
- 20:56bit of information and what the plans were. And then the very first person
- 21:00who got up and asked a question at the press conference, as an independent
- 21:03journalist of some kind, had had an interesting, an interesting response to the
- 21:10whole thing as far as the questions that we're being asked because uh, and
- 21:14it's we should point out that, you know, Bill Nelson, administrator for
- 21:18NASA, was one of the speakers in this event, and you know,
- 21:22basically said we don't have any evidence that the UAPs are of extraterrestrial origin,
- 21:29which led the very first person to ask a question to go, well,
- 21:30how can you prove it's not? And you go, this is if we
- 21:34don't know what they are, how can we prove it's not? And he
- 21:37said, that's not what I said. And I'm paraphrasing all of that,
- 21:41but I mean that's exactly the approach that NASA has to take to it,
- 21:48to say, we're just trying to find the answers and we're not trying to,
- 21:52uh, you know, create any sort of hype, any sort of
- 21:56they're trying to uh, what were the words that they use, destigmatized the
- 22:00reporting in it And then comes less than twenty four hours after the paper mache
- 22:04aliens. So he didn't actually address the aliens. He didn't talk about the
- 22:11Mexico paper mache aliens. But you couldn't help. But when he said destigmatized
- 22:18reporting efforts, she couldn't help but imagine in my head the paper mache Mexican
- 22:22aliens. I'm sorry, Peruvian, Peruvian aliens, wow, Peruvian by way
- 22:27of Mexico. And I don't know if they have a passport. I mean,
- 22:30I don't know what's going on there anyway. So so let me just
- 22:34get away from that and talk about the thing that has actually maybe scientifically important
- 22:41in this whole conversation, which is actually the panel coming out and discussing this
- 22:45issue, which West We've been through so much, buddy, you and me.
- 22:52We've lived through COVID, We've lived through a national upheaval. We've lived
- 22:56through lockdowns and masks and the death of friends, and it's been hard and
- 23:03weird and it's changed our world. So now we're in twenty twenty three,
- 23:08going, yeah, a big deal. There's aliens. I don't know whatever
- 23:12I mean. In nineteen eighty five, when I was a journalism student at
- 23:17the University of Southern Colorado, this would have been stunning. But okay,
- 23:23now it's just like a well, you know what I mean, as a
- 23:26panel investigating UFOs, And didn't they always have that? No, no,
- 23:32they did not have an external panel investigating unidentified flying objects or aerial phenomenon or
- 23:40a novelist, none of that. It's a first Okay, So let me
- 23:47lower my blood pressure and just return to science. The question that you addressed,
- 23:52how do we prove they're not from another world? The answer data for
- 24:00all of my Columbia State University students or any students of science out there listening
- 24:03to this particular podcast. There's something called the scientific method, and the scientific
- 24:08method is a way to assert certain concepts from the realm of speculation into the
- 24:14realm of commonly accepted theories and theory. As a meaning, ladies and gentlemen,
- 24:19it doesn't mean a swag. That doesn't mean a wild guess. It
- 24:22means something else. It means that you have actually found evidence that supports an
- 24:30idea, and so therefore you postulate a theory. And ladies and gentlemen,
- 24:33this is not a theory because we have not had evidence to support beyond a
- 24:41shadow of a doubt a the existence even the existence of UAPs, but B
- 24:48that they are in any way associated with any kind of extraterrestrial presence. Okay,
- 24:56so let's just start there. B. The commission themselves came out and
- 25:00said, as good scientists would, that right now they have no evidence that
- 25:08UAP events are of extraterrestrial origin. That is a lack of evidence, therefore
- 25:18denying the ability to carry out the scientific process because speculation doesn't cut it.
- 25:26Science speaks to data, evidence and what that evidence can tell us about the
- 25:34nature of physical reality, and they're just simply is not enough. What they
- 25:41have said, quite cleverly from this commission is we see some data. Some
- 25:47data does exist. It points to very interesting ideas. And ladies and gentlemen,
- 25:56they did not just collect the data from these naval aviators off San Diego's
- 26:00coast. They looked at a plethora of data from a variety of sources,
- 26:07and the vast majority of them were easily identifiable as everyday common occurrence phenomenon such
- 26:15as aircraft, weather balloons, the planet Venus, unusual apparitions of the sunlight
- 26:22in the clouds, and a variety of other things which I get phone calls
- 26:26all about down here at the Space Science Center, and I have to say,
- 26:30no, that was simply chromatic aberration on the bright star. Serious,
- 26:33and what you saw was not a UFO. Okay, all right, So
- 26:37I'm a little bit in this area as well, so I can tell you
- 26:41that what they said was they simply don't have data of sufficient resolution to carry
- 26:48out any more significant investigations. Beyond that, there are some phenomenon phenomena reported
- 27:00in this plethora of data that still defy explanation, but that's in part because
- 27:06the data is insufficient to confirm or deny what they have seen. However,
- 27:15some of this data appears to be compelling enough, and West set aside the
- 27:19paper mache aliens for a moment. This is the headline, if you wanted
- 27:23to the actual science headline. Ladies and gentlemen, this group did not come
- 27:29out and deny the existence of UAP, but instead tacitly confirmed the existence of
- 27:37phenomenon that were compelling enough that they simply could not explain even the poor quality
- 27:45data, and therefore they need to actually establish an office within NASA to further
- 27:53investigate these few phenomenon within these plethora of other reports. So NASA has appointed
- 28:00a Director of UAP Research, and this person will use both artificial intelligence machine
- 28:10learning combined with space based data collection resources to investigate UAP. That's a stunning
- 28:22headline, folks, because anytime NASA establishes an office, there are dollars tied
- 28:27to that because they have to pay people, and so this office actually has
- 28:33a budget. They're not going to establish this office with a budget attached to
- 28:40it if they think the data are insignificant and will lead nowhere. There's the
- 28:48headline. So this NASA office is going to coordinate with a larger, larger
- 28:56governmental entity called the All Domain anomal Resolution Office or very cleverly right straight out
- 29:03of the X files called ARROW a RO, the All Domain Anomaly Resolution Office
- 29:08ARROW. They're going to collaborate or coordinate with the ARROW office all of the
- 29:14governmental reporting on UAP phenomenon. That's the headline. Friends, paper mache aliens
- 29:22in Mexico, not important, the establishment of an office within the structure of
- 29:29NASA to investigate UAPs because they can't explain away everything that is important. All
- 29:37right. We follow that up with, hey, did they just using the
- 29:44James Webb space telescope discover life on another planet? Maybe? Maybe maybe within
- 30:00the same you know, a week long news cycle. Maybe maybe the James
- 30:03web Space Telescope found signatures of alien life. Maybe maybe what sort of home
- 30:11craft materials are these made out of? I wonder if only weekend? No,
- 30:15No, this is one of those many incredible uses for the James web
- 30:21Space telescope as on an exoplanet, a discovery of basically potential well I guess
- 30:30they are life chemicals, but it could be a potential sign for life.
- 30:33But again, thank goodness for that scientific method. I wish that there are
- 30:38two previous stories that we just discussed never existed, because west we could start
- 30:45off our show with this really cool story that actually is important. Wouldn't that
- 30:51be awesome? It would be that we didn't have to talk about paper mache
- 30:53aliens and NASA looking into UAP kind of enjoyed it, though I'm just being
- 31:00from the perspective of the audience, Sarah. Yet I kind of enjoyed it.
- 31:03It was fun, you know. You know, I really enjoyed it
- 31:08too. It was awesome. So but now let's move on to actual astronomical
- 31:15science, ladies and gentlemen. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has discovered the presence
- 31:22of methane and carbon dioxide, as we know well here on Earth, two
- 31:27very important greenhouse gases produced by living things as well as automobiles and other sources
- 31:33of energy. But they found these not in Earth's atmosphere, but in the
- 31:37atmosphere of a of a planet that's orbiting around another star. We call that
- 31:41an exoplanet and has a very clever catalog called the K two DA eighteen B.
- 31:47So K two Dash eighteen is a star and the B represents the second
- 31:52planet known to orbit that star. This is the second planet around this sun.
- 31:56The K two eighteen B an exo planet at about eight point six times
- 32:00as massive as the Earth. We know that as a subnet Tunian object,
- 32:07so it's like Neptune kind of it. Orbits a cool dwarf star called K
- 32:13two eighteen. But that planet B is in the habitable zone of that other
- 32:21star. That's where water could potentially exist on its surface. It's at that
- 32:27just right distance, not too hot, not too cold, and so it
- 32:32makes it very interesting. And this whole planetary system lies about one hundred and
- 32:37twenty light years from the Earth, which means you jump out on the bypass,
- 32:43you take the left at the first convenience store, and you travel about
- 32:46one hundred and twenty light years from Earth and you run into K two eighteen.
- 32:51You look for the second planet around that star, and you will find
- 32:54methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of that planet. But west that's not
- 33:00even the most compelling thing. We need to set things up a little bit
- 33:04more to talk about an even more compelling scenario for this weird exoplanet, and
- 33:14that is dimethyl sulfide. So there's this weird substance called dimethyl sulfide which we
- 33:24find in the atmosphere of the Earth, which there appears to be embedded within
- 33:30the spectroscopic signatures of absorption elements in the atmosphere of this exoplanet. Dimethyl dimethyl
- 33:39sulfide d MS, ladies and gentlemen on Earth. This substance is only known
- 33:50to be produced by life. The bulk of DMS in Earth's atmosphere. By
- 33:58the way, this is from a story for NASA dot gov. Although they're
- 34:01out run around looking for aliens, so how can you believe those people?
- 34:04But whatever NASA dot gov is where the story is from, Ladies and gentlemen,
- 34:07The bulk of DMS in Earth's atmosphere is emitted from phytoplankton in marine environments.
- 34:15Let me tell you just a little bit more about K two D eighteen
- 34:19B. It's thought to be something called a high Sean planet, the word
- 34:25high Sean being a derivative of two other English words hydrogen and ocean hydrogen oceans
- 34:36smash them together high Sean. It is a hypothetical type planet described as a
- 34:42hot water covered world with a hydrogen atmosphere. But remember water has oxygen in
- 34:50it H two oh, so therefore the presence of the life necessary compound of
- 34:58oxygen would be all also present in these high Sean worlds. K two D
- 35:04eighteen B has all of the parameters that would make it a really good candidate
- 35:09for one of these high Sean worlds. Hydrogen atmosphere, water covered surface,
- 35:15and it's thought that the spectral signature of dimethyl sulfide is in the spectrum of
- 35:24this planet and we only know of that compound being created by life sources and
- 35:30not by any other geological sources here on the Earth. WHOA Okay, so
- 35:37we know and we've talked about this many many times before. When they start
- 35:39talking about exoplanets, and they start any planet in general, but we start
- 35:45taking specially we started talking about exoplanets, the possibility of life begins with water.
- 35:53And we've you know, we've talked about as far as liquid water.
- 35:57That is a certain that's sort of the first basis for being able to have
- 36:01as a marker for this because obviously life would need that you take that,
- 36:07and then you take in the fact that they've this presence of dimethyl sulfide certainly
- 36:13would lead this to be And remember we're not talking about mummified aliens. When
- 36:19we start talking about life on another world, it begins with some sort of
- 36:23simple life form, some sort of simple cell life form that could exist there,
- 36:30and this certainly would qualify for that on this type of planet as a
- 36:34possibility, and having to go through the whole process of actually doing the science,
- 36:38not showing up at a press conference with something that your kid made with
- 36:44macaronian glue. It's a long way for me to go to get to the
- 36:51macaroni joke, right, I mean was that? I mean it could be
- 36:53a thing. Maybe Halloween's coming up. I think I'm gonna make some aliens
- 37:00of macaronian glues and present them to the Mexican government. That's what that's my
- 37:05next goal. I think that's I think that's a good Halloween project. Ladies
- 37:08and gentlemen, we're talking about the actual data signature of potential life, and
- 37:15maybe not life capable of flying around in spacecraft, but living organisms as we
- 37:21know it. It's always it's always the protocol. You have to throw it
- 37:23in on every sci fi movie, right, Life as we know it?
- 37:27Life as we know it is dependent on that H two that West was describing.
- 37:30So we look for planets that live in the habitable zone where liquid water
- 37:34can exist on the surface. Liquid water being an extraordinarily unusual substance. Water
- 37:38itself is mostly either solid or gas, only in the rarest of environments can
- 37:44exist as a liquid. And now we've found a planet where it can exist
- 37:47as a liquid where we see methane and carbon dioxide in good supply in the
- 37:52atmosphere and a potential trace of dimethyl sulfide. By the way, it's important
- 37:58to say the folks the James Webb Space Telescope have come out and said they
- 38:04need to do follow up observations on this particular one. Right. Their data
- 38:07is not good enough to absolutely confirm DMS in the spectrum. They want to
- 38:10go out and do more detailed observations of K two eighteen B and so they
- 38:15can get better confirmation of the existence of dms. But ladies and gentlemen,
- 38:20that is by far a more credible path to go down to look for alien
- 38:27life, yeah, than anything that we're in those two sarcop guy in the
- 38:32Mexican Parliament. And it's also worth noting to just that. Earlier today at
- 38:37that press conference, the NASA Administrator Bill Nelson did say that in the billions
- 38:44of galaxies with billions of stars, you know, there's a really good possibility
- 38:50he believes some life out there. Maybe he was talking about this one,
- 38:55he could be talking about K two eighteen B. So, folks, just
- 39:00to put a finer point on what West just said, Bill Nelson, the
- 39:05director of NASA, was actually commissioned by officers from the federal government to come
- 39:09up the qualitative analysis of how likely NASA scientists believed that it would be,
- 39:17numerically speaking, for life to exist in our universe. And so they did
- 39:22an estimation similar to what we know as the Drake equation. They did an
- 39:27estimation about the number of stars and the number of planets around those stars,
- 39:31in the number of galaxies that we know about, and the number of those
- 39:36planets that would be rocky worlds or some kind of life supporting world and the
- 39:39number of those planets that could have liquid water on their surface, and a
- 39:43number of those planets in which life might actually try to evolve. And they
- 39:45came up with an estimate of trillions of worlds that would satisfy those conditions.
- 39:55So Bill Nelson did kind of open up today's press conference with that number.
- 40:01So so there you go. I mean, you know what I'm saying is
- 40:06it's aliens. Aliens are out there. I'm just convinced. But that's merely
- 40:10opinion, ladies and gentlemen, that is not science. Coming up after a
- 40:15quick break, an American sets a record for time in space and he has
- 40:21a connection to the Chattahoochee Valley. We'll talk about Frank Rubio next. I
- 40:45thought the Drake equation had something to do with hotline bling, but maybe I'm
- 40:50confusing it with somebody else. I don't know what's going on. All right,
- 40:52let's talk. It seems like maybe like six months ago, we started
- 40:55talking about the fact that astronaut Frank rue Bo, who was once here in
- 41:01the Chattahoochee Valley. I guess as a member of the military. It was
- 41:07he'd gone to space about a year ago, and you know, six months
- 41:12ago there was an issue with his ride home, and suddenly it became a
- 41:15scenario where he said, while an American astronaut may do something no other American
- 41:19astronaut has done, spend a whole year on the International Space Station. And
- 41:23we're coming up on that year. How many times, West if I had
- 41:29a nickel for every time I was at a party and my ride's car broke
- 41:32down and I had no way home. You know, this just happened to
- 41:37me so many times. And then you know, I'm calling around to various
- 41:39space agencies and governments around the world, say hey, can you give me
- 41:43a lift and they're saying, you know, no, you know, we
- 41:46don't have a ride for you. So I mean if I had a nickel
- 41:51anyway. So this is basically what happened to Frank Rubio. American NASA astronaut
- 41:54Frank Rubio rode to space starting in September of last year with a group of
- 42:04cosmonauts. So Frankie got to evaluate your life choices. You have to know
- 42:08who you're going to the party with, so you're going up with cosmonauts.
- 42:12So seward rode up to the ISS with some cosmonauts on the very on the
- 42:15very robust and credible spacecraft called the soy Us. But after the soy Us
- 42:22attached to the International Space Station and both the two cosmonauts and Frank Rubio were
- 42:29inside the ISS doing very important scientific work advancing the frontiers of space exploration and
- 42:37our scientific knowledge, their ride sprung a leak. The soy US craft called
- 42:43the MS twenty three. I'm sorry the MS twenty I don't need to confuse
- 42:49my MSS. It's MS twenty two. Their ride MS twenty two sprung a
- 42:54leak in December of twenty twenty two and sprayed ammonia coolant all over the neighborhood
- 43:02of the International Space Station, which made giant ice fountains of ammonia and looked
- 43:07very attractive for a short period of time, but also looked rather terrifying back
- 43:10in December of twenty twenty two, and see, without the coolant, you
- 43:15can't take everybody home. So that ride was disabled for three astronauts. The
- 43:22Russian said, well, it might get a little hot in there, but
- 43:24we think we can get our two cosmonauts back, but we don't know about
- 43:28this Rubio guy. So Frank didn't have a ride home. So what Ross
- 43:32Cosmos did is in February of twenty twenty three, they send up the MS
- 43:37twenty three. And that's where I confuse my numbers. The MS twenty three
- 43:42was a different spacecraft sent up to the International Space Station to dock there to
- 43:45be the ride home for everybody. Okay, so it's been up there for
- 43:51a while, but because of other transportation consideration and astronaut crew changes and a
- 43:57variety of things happening at the International Space Station that's a pretty complicated flight environment,
- 44:02they just couldn't let them go home at that time. And so Frank
- 44:07Rubio, Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitri Pellaton, who are all scheduled to fly up
- 44:15in September and come home about six months later. They've been up there since
- 44:19September of twenty twenty two and have now completed almost a year in space.
- 44:25They will complete more than a year in space, making Frank have the single
- 44:32longest space flight in NASA astronaut history. So, Frank Rubio, congratulations,
- 44:40sir. You have been up there on a single mission longer than any other
- 44:45astronaut that has ever flown for NASA, and you are now the record holder,
- 44:49sir. As we record the show, they are scheduled to come back
- 44:53on the twenty seventh of September twenty twenty three, and that would bring them
- 44:59home in more than a year up in space, three hundred seventy seven days
- 45:04of memory serves, and so so he would be the longest single mission astronaut
- 45:09flight in the American Space program history. Proud to have had you part of
- 45:15our community. Yeah, he was apparently, as you said, with the
- 45:21military station at what was then Fort Benning which is now Fort Moore here in
- 45:24our Chattahoochee Valley. Frank says this, there was a quote from Frank from
- 45:30this story from space dot Com. By the way, he said this,
- 45:31as much as it was a challenge to say an extra six months, I'm
- 45:36so grateful that the agency was able to say, Hey, you know what
- 45:39the safe thing to do would be to fire up a new spacecraft and have
- 45:45my crew and me wait and ensure a more safe return. I am looking
- 45:51forward to a return on a more safe and more secure spacecraft. So that's
- 45:57that's the quote from Frank Rubio. Frank, we wish you the best,
- 46:00and when we get back down, we are going to extend you an invitation
- 46:02to come and speak with us as a member of our community here on the
- 46:06Mative Stars podcast and quite possibly at Columba State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.
- 46:12So Frank, I know you're listening while you're up there trying to run
- 46:14the International Space Station right now. But yeah, thank you for listening to
- 46:17Major Stars, Frank Rubio, and we will we will get that invitation out
- 46:22to you soon. On the edge of his seat during the paper Machee Aliens
- 46:25segment, all right, let's talk about Starship because they're a little closer to
- 46:30launching as we're so many NASA astronauts listening to the paper mache alien conversation.
- 46:36I'm sure there's a large astronaut contingent who would have stayed tuned for that whole
- 46:39discussion. So thank you for your patients, all you members of NASA's Astronaut
- 46:45Corps. Somewhere somewhere around here on my desk, I've got a friendship bracelet
- 46:50that was made by aliens. Of course it was. I don't know.
- 46:54Is it from Mexico? No, no, no no, they found it
- 46:59in Guatemala. Oh not Peru. Okay anyway, So, ladies and gentlemen,
- 47:05two more quick hits here on today's episode today's prolonged episode of Made of
- 47:08Stars Two quick hits. One Elon Musk SpaceX has come out and said Starship
- 47:15is ready to go, baby. All we have to do is get that
- 47:19signed document from the Federal Aviation Administration. And he came out on what used
- 47:23to be called Twitter but is now called x X and said, congrats to
- 47:30the SpaceX. I'm sorry, congrats to SpaceX for completing and documenting the fifty
- 47:35seven items required by the FAA for flight two of Starship unquote meaning, hey,
- 47:39FAA put you on notice. We've checked off all the boxes. We're
- 47:44ready to fly. Put the blue ink on that document, get it to
- 47:46us, and we're ready to go. So SpaceX has announced a flight date
- 47:51yet, but Elon Musk has said that flight two can take place pretty much
- 47:54as soon as the FAA awards a launch license. That regulatory step has not
- 47:59yet happen as as we know. Find out all of this and more on
- 48:02the space dot com story. All Right, Nebraska seeing some northern lights.
- 48:08One more quick hit. If you're seeing Aurora borealis in Nebraska, it's weird.
- 48:15That does not happen all the time because Nebraska as at a longitude of
- 48:21forty point nine degrees, not even halfway from the equator to the north Pole.
- 48:28So if you're seeing glowing skies in Nebraska and it has nothing to do
- 48:32with UAPs, if it's solar phenomenon, that means that there's been a pretty
- 48:37big solar event. And that's exactly what's taking place here. In the last
- 48:40twenty four hours, a surprise geomagnetic storm has erupted on the Sun. It
- 48:45hurled a CME at the Earth back on September the twelfth. That CME has
- 48:52now encountered Earth's geomagnetic field and sparked a G two class geomagnetic storm, so
- 49:00magnetically, the CME remained connected to our planet for more than thirteen hours.
- 49:05All of this from the excellent reporting from spaceweather dot com. That's the website,
- 49:09ladies and gentlemen, that you need to follow to stay in touch with
- 49:13all of the events taking place on the Sun and it's interconnectedness with the Earth.
- 49:17And if you go there and look at the thirteenth of September in their
- 49:22archive page, you will see absolutely beautiful photographs of Aurora borealis that appeared over
- 49:28the United States Midwest, both in Missouri and Nebraska, and the amateur astronomers
- 49:34that photographed that nighttime sky beautiful shots. Check out the story on spaceweather dot
- 49:39com. Right here on Native Stars podcast is where you heard about it,
- 49:43Ladies and gentlemen. Full disclosure, the Friendship bracelet was made by my niece
- 49:47Lucy in Australia, so just a heads up, I don't want to give
- 49:52any false information. All right, let's talk about Music under the Dome because
- 49:54it's coming back a new season of it at the Coca Cola Space Science Center
- 49:59a concert experience. It's unlike any you've ever experienced before, unless you've already
- 50:01been to music under the Dome. I've not ever been to a music under
- 50:06the Dome concert and seen a UAP. Let me just be clear about that.
- 50:08That's good. That's good. It's important to note or paper mache aliens.
- 50:15I have no paper mache aliens. If you want a UAP free experience,
- 50:20come on down on October three to Columbis State University's Coca Cola Space Science
- 50:23Center right here in the uptown area of beautiful Columbus, Georgia, and experience
- 50:29a concert that is unique, that is special. A collaboration with the Schwab
- 50:32School of Music here at Columbis State University, the Schwab Artists will be performing
- 50:37inside of Columbis State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center in the Planetarium with visuals
- 50:44choreographed by our very own planetarium director, mister Lance tankers Lee. And that
- 50:47concert is going to be taking place within the Omnisphere Theater, our planetarium,
- 50:52beginning at five thirty eight pm on October the third. There are still tickets
- 50:58available and they are are cheap, ladies and gentlemen, so from the experience
- 51:02that you're going to get with the excellent musicianship of the artists from the Shrobe
- 51:06School of Music combined with the unbelievable graphics choreographed to that music presented by mister
- 51:10lands Tankers lea here at the Space Science Center. It's a very enjoyable concert.
- 51:15And by the way, there's a wine and cheese reception ahead of time
- 51:19that your ticket price gets you in four free ninety five free ninety five,
- 51:22so you can check it out. Ladies and gentlemen, go to our website
