- 0:55Speaker 1: of the Bengals. Now here's a quick reminder that you

- 1:01Speaker 1: to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing wherever you
- 1:06Speaker 1: get your podcasts. It's the greatest thing since my all
- 1:10Speaker 1: time favorite line on a TV show, HBO ran a
- 1:14Speaker 1: Sopranos marathon over the last week or so, and when
- 1:16Speaker 1: I was flipping channels on the remote, I wound up
- 1:19Speaker 1: watching bits and pieces of several episodes, including one that
- 1:23Speaker 1: features perhaps my all time favorite line of dialogue. Christopher
- 1:28Speaker 1: is in the hospital having nightmares about going to Hell
- 1:31Speaker 1: for his mob related sins. That freaks out Polly Walnuts,
- 1:35Speaker 1: who worries that he's headed there in the afterlife too,
- 1:38Speaker 1: so he quizzes Christopher about his nightmare and asks if
- 1:43Speaker 1: Hell was hot in his dream. After Christopher answers, I
- 1:48Speaker 1: don't know, Polly triumphantly says, the heat would have been
- 1:52Speaker 1: the first thing you noticed. Hell is hot. That's never
- 1:56Speaker 1: been disputed. I have probably said hell is hot, never
- 2:01Speaker 1: been disputed a million times since first seeing that episode.
- 2:06Speaker 1: It cracks me up every time. Now let's get to
- 2:10Speaker 1: football and the radio replays from week one. The weather
- 2:14Speaker 1: was perfect, and kudos to Bengals fans for turning the
- 2:17Speaker 1: jungle into an ocean of orange. It looked great in
- 2:22Speaker 1: person and on TV, and I, for one hope the
- 2:25Speaker 1: open and orange tradition is here to stay. The Bengals
- 2:29Speaker 1: offense got off to a slow start, but rookie punter
- 2:32Speaker 1: Ryan Rico didn't. His first NFL punt went fifty seven
- 2:36Speaker 1: yards and his second set a franchise record wereco waiting
- 2:40Speaker 1: at the five. Snap is shoulder high, the right footed
- 2:44Speaker 1: punt is goosh, holy cow, it's going to fly to
- 2:48Speaker 1: the nine, bounce.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Us to the five, chip us toward the pylon and
- 2:53Speaker 2: just barely goes into the end zone that would.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Have been at the one foot line.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It's an eighty yard punt had traveled seventy yards in
- 3:02Speaker 1: the air. It's still sixty net yards despite bouncing into
- 3:06Speaker 1: the end zone.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Howard's a shot there.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Boy.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That was the longest punt in team history, but not
- 3:14Speaker 1: the longest ever for Rico.
- 3:15Speaker 5: I think I had an eighty three at YU three. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 5: but that was a little while ago too, and they
- 3:22Speaker 5: come around every so often. It's fun, but yeah, definitely
- 3:26Speaker 5: couldn't be more grateful.
- 3:27Speaker 1: The previous Bengals record was seventy five yards, shared by
- 3:29Speaker 1: Kevin Huber and Kyle Larson. Rico averaged sixty four and
- 3:34Speaker 1: a half yards on four punts in the game, and
- 3:37Speaker 1: that is also a new single game team record. The
- 3:41Speaker 1: Patriots took a seven to nothing lead on a three
- 3:44Speaker 1: yard touchdown run by Romandre Stevenson on the first play
- 3:47Speaker 1: of the second quarter. But a few minutes later, the
- 3:50Speaker 1: Bengals offense started to cook Burrow in the shotgun. Moss
- 3:54Speaker 1: lines up to his right, Tanner Hudson motions out to
- 3:57Speaker 1: the left. Burrow drops back to throw fires caught by
- 4:00Speaker 1: Chase Jamar at the fifteen. The fourteen hits a first
- 4:03Speaker 1: down for Cincinnati. He took Christian Gonzales for a ride
- 4:08Speaker 1: and the Bengals are in the red zone for a
- 4:10Speaker 1: first down. Two plays later, they went from the red
- 4:13Speaker 1: zone to the end zone. Drew Sample lines up in
- 4:16Speaker 1: the backfield to the left of Burrow. Shotgun snap Joe
- 4:19Speaker 1: looking right, He'll float it for the end zone.
- 4:22Speaker 6: It if baby caught for the touchdown.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Mike Kasiki against his former team with his first touchdown
- 4:31Speaker 2: in a Bengals uniform. He does his version of the gritty,
- 4:36Speaker 2: which isn't exactly perfectly executed, but the Bengals have scored
- 4:41Speaker 2: their first touchdown of the year.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Or so we thought. As the Bengals lined up for
- 4:46Speaker 1: the game tying extra point, the officials studied the replay
- 4:50Speaker 1: and determined that Kasiki did not complete the catch as
- 4:53Speaker 1: he went to the ground no touchdown, but the Bengals
- 4:57Speaker 1: still had the ball in the red zone. They're down
- 4:59Speaker 1: in eleven four the fifteen Burrow quick pass over.
- 5:02Speaker 2: The minute cut by Tanner Hudson loses the football picked
- 5:05Speaker 2: up in.
- 5:05Speaker 1: The end zone by the Patriots. They are running it
- 5:08Speaker 1: back to the ten to the fifteen and the tackle
- 5:11Speaker 1: is made at the seventeen yard line. Tanner Hudson, on
- 5:14Speaker 1: the verge of going into the end zone for a touchdown,
- 5:17Speaker 1: had the ball knocked away. Marcus Jones scooped up the
- 5:21Speaker 1: ricochet right at the goal line and ran it back
- 5:24Speaker 1: to the seventeen. Before Jamar Chase could make the stop.
- 5:27Speaker 7: He exposed the football and Douger made him pay.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Instead of being a tie game, the Patriots were still
- 5:33Speaker 1: up by seven, and a field goal on the final
- 5:36Speaker 1: play of the half made it ten to nothing New England.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The Bengals defense promptly got a three and out to
- 5:41Speaker 1: begin the second half, but Cincinnati made another costly mistake.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The long snapper Cardona fires it back. Baringer launches a
- 5:52Speaker 1: very very high punt. Charlie Jones, back pedaling and catching
- 5:55Speaker 1: at the ten, has a little bit of running room
- 5:57Speaker 1: He's to the fifteen to twenty the ball and the
- 6:01Speaker 1: Patriots recover at the twenty four yard line.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Man.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That led to a field goal in a thirteen to
- 6:06Speaker 1: nothing lead. It was time for the offense to deliver
- 6:10Speaker 1: and the Bengals quickly drove into New England territory. The
- 6:13Speaker 1: Bengals line up to go for it on fourth and
- 6:15Speaker 1: two at the New England thirty six. Three receivers out
- 6:19Speaker 1: to the right burrow in the gun. He catches his
- 6:21Speaker 1: shoulder high snap, throws a screen out to the right.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yo see Bosh tackle it to thirty five? What not
- 6:27Speaker 1: short of the first down, oh Man. After five drives,
- 6:31Speaker 1: the Bengals still had not scored, but that changed the
- 6:35Speaker 1: next time. They got the ball, first and goal from
- 6:37Speaker 1: the five Burrow in the pistol again, turns left, gives
- 6:40Speaker 1: it to.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Moss right up the medal touchdown down Baby Bengals sack
- 6:46Speaker 6: Moss up the gut head into the end zone for
- 6:50Speaker 6: his first Bengals touchdown.
- 6:52Speaker 3: What I liked on.
- 6:53Speaker 7: That I saw a blocker finishing a defender into the
- 6:56Speaker 7: end zone on his backside. The Bengals were starting to
- 6:59Speaker 7: catch you control of the minus scrimmage. A little bit
- 7:02Speaker 7: mosses up the football field and boy, I'll tell you
- 7:05Speaker 7: watching this well, take him to the ground, finish him,
- 7:08Speaker 7: put him on his backside.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It was thirteen to seven going to the fourth quarter.
- 7:13Speaker 1: A Patriots field goal made it sixteen to seven, but
- 7:16Speaker 1: the Bengals scored for the second drive in a row.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Shotgun snapped to Burrow four man rush throws down the
- 7:21Speaker 1: minute of the field, Chase with a catch in Patriots'
- 7:24Speaker 1: territory and he gets tackled in the middle of the
- 7:27Speaker 1: field at the thirty six huff New England by Jabril
- 7:30Speaker 1: Peppers twenty eight yards to Jamar Chase. That led to
- 7:34Speaker 1: an Evan McPherson field goal that made it sixteen to ten,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and the defense forced to punt with about three minutes
- 7:40Speaker 1: to go. That gave the Bengals a chance for a
- 7:43Speaker 1: game winning drive. Unfortunately, it was not to be. The
- 7:47Speaker 1: Bengals elected to punt on fourth and five from their
- 7:50Speaker 1: own fifteen with two and a half minutes to go
- 7:53Speaker 1: in three timeouts remaining, but the Patriots were able to
- 7:56Speaker 1: run for two first downs to win the game six
- 8:00Speaker 1: sixteen ten. Holding a team to sixteen points is usually
- 8:03Speaker 1: enough to win but not when you lose the turnover
- 8:06Speaker 1: battle to Zip, and not when you allow the opponent
- 8:09Speaker 1: to rush for one hundred and seventy yards on thirty
- 8:12Speaker 1: nine carries to dominate time of possession. Logan Wilson led
- 8:17Speaker 1: the Bengals with thirteen tackles and three quarterback hits. And
- 8:20Speaker 1: I talked to them after the game, what aspect of
- 8:25Speaker 1: the game bothers.
- 8:26Speaker 3: You them rushing for one hundred and seventy rushing yards.
- 8:30Speaker 8: We've talked about all off season how we're going to
- 8:31Speaker 8: clean that shit up, and it's we didn't.
- 8:35Speaker 3: So obviously we still I worked too. We gotta tackle better.
- 8:37Speaker 3: That starts with tackling.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say, it seemed like there
- 8:40Speaker 1: were several of those running plays where you guys were
- 8:42Speaker 1: in position to get them down and maybe got two
- 8:44Speaker 1: more yards, four more yards, six more yards, whatever it
- 8:47Speaker 1: might have been.
- 8:48Speaker 8: Yeah, it's seen those issues that were from last year.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I mean, we still have time to clean up.
- 8:52Speaker 8: Obviously, we had sixteen more games, but we got to
- 8:55Speaker 8: let this one sting quite a bit, just because we
- 8:57Speaker 8: got to clean that that stuff up up the bath.
- 9:00Speaker 8: We gotta be better on defense. We gotta get turnovers.
- 9:04Speaker 8: We had no turnovers today, and when you win the
- 9:06Speaker 8: turnover battle, I think plus plus two in this league
- 9:08Speaker 8: is like winning percent, just like seventy eight.
- 9:12Speaker 3: So odds are high. When you get turnovers, you forced
- 9:15Speaker 3: to fumble.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Unfortunately, at the bottom of the pile, they guess they
- 9:18Speaker 1: willed that Stevenson held on long enough.
- 9:21Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, I got he did. I thought Joseph came
- 9:24Speaker 8: up with it. I wasn't really sure who came up
- 9:25Speaker 8: with it. Everyone was seeing Osai came up with it,
- 9:27Speaker 8: and so I was hoping that we were. They were
- 9:29Speaker 8: letting him play through. But unfortunately it didn't go away.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into trying
- 9:34Speaker 1: to get off to a better start this year. Is
- 9:37Speaker 1: it a little bewildering it? For whatever reason, Week one
- 9:40Speaker 1: just has not gone well.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:44Speaker 8: I mean, I'm not I'm not gonna panic, that's for sure.
- 9:46Speaker 8: You know, I'm gonna I'm gonna look myself in the mirror. See,
- 9:49Speaker 8: but I gotta do better.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And then because the defense gotta sue we can do better.
- 9:52Speaker 8: Especial teams offense is do the same, and we gotta
- 9:55Speaker 8: put our best foot forward because it's not like we're
- 9:57Speaker 8: going into an easy environment, going to Ahead and playing
- 10:00Speaker 8: in Kansas City.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Appreciate your time Offensively, Joe Burrow was twenty one for
- 10:05Speaker 1: twenty nine, that's seventy two percent, but he had to
- 10:07Speaker 1: settle for short passes with the Patriots taking away the
- 10:10Speaker 1: deep ball. Joe threw for one hundred and sixty four
- 10:13Speaker 1: yards and had a passer rating of eighty six. Zach
- 10:17Speaker 1: Moss was the team's leading rusher with forty four yards.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Jamar Chase was the leading receiver with six catches for
- 10:23Speaker 1: sixty two. For more on the offense, here's tight end
- 10:27Speaker 1: Mike KASICKI. I thought you had your first touchdown in
- 10:30Speaker 1: a Bengals uniform. I guess after seeing the replay the
- 10:35Speaker 1: ball skidded on the ground.
- 10:37Speaker 3: What did you think.
- 10:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't know. I haven't seen a replay of
- 10:40Speaker 9: it yet, so unfortunately I can't really comment on it
- 10:43Speaker 9: too soon. But definitely thought I had it. You know,
- 10:47Speaker 9: Obviously I wouldn't have, you know, celebrated like I did. Yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 9: if I didn't, But unfortunately, I mean, that was the
- 10:56Speaker 9: call and it is what it is.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Kind of a frustrating day for the offense. Arded slowly
- 11:01Speaker 1: from the fourth possession on you moved the ball well,
- 11:03Speaker 1: but for whatever reason, those first three drives just couldn't
- 11:06Speaker 1: get it going.
- 11:07Speaker 9: Yeah, it is, like you said, unfortunate. You know, we
- 11:14Speaker 9: got a lot of good players, a lot of great coaches,
- 11:16Speaker 9: and I think the right people in this in this
- 11:20Speaker 9: locker room. So you know, we'll go back watch the tape, uh,
- 11:23Speaker 9: see what we can do better improve on, and come
- 11:27Speaker 9: back next week ready.
- 11:27Speaker 1: To feel like t was badly missed today.
- 11:31Speaker 9: Uh. Yeah, me and a guy of his caliber and talent, Uh,
- 11:33Speaker 9: that's always gonna you know, affect the offense. But you
- 11:37Speaker 9: know some other guys got to step up, including myself,
- 11:40Speaker 9: and you know, next week's a new week.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You were a Patriot last year, that game kind of
- 11:46Speaker 1: felt like a bella check performance to me. They didn't
- 11:49Speaker 1: turn it over, they led the clock, They did the
- 11:52Speaker 1: things that the Patriots had historically done well when they went.
- 11:55Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, you know, we've lost the turnover battle and
- 12:00Speaker 9: they won the time in possession battle and all that
- 12:02Speaker 9: kind of stuff. So uh, you know, at the end
- 12:05Speaker 9: of the day, you know, we got some things that
- 12:08Speaker 9: we have to clean up, and we know that, and
- 12:10Speaker 9: you know we'll be ready to come back in tomorrow
- 12:12Speaker 9: and get to work.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Half of the league got a bounce back in week one.
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's where we are unfortunately.
- 12:16Speaker 9: Yeah, no doubt, it's a long season. It's only September eighth,
- 12:18Speaker 9: so plenty of time.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Mike, appreciate you time.
- 12:21Speaker 9: Appreciate it.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Now. Let's hear what Zach Taylor had to say as
- 12:24Speaker 1: he spent a couple of minutes with Lap after the game.
- 12:28Speaker 10: We got to tackle better and we got to get
- 12:29Speaker 10: the ball of them losing the turn of battle two
- 12:32Speaker 10: to nothing, you know, and the chart Troy three to
- 12:34Speaker 10: nothing with a failed first fourth down. But that's not
- 12:36Speaker 10: unacceptable in week one. That's not gonna win you any games.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Last year ten Fumbals lost two of them all season
- 12:43Speaker 4: long Clubber only losing two fumbles none to lose two
- 12:47Speaker 4: and like just a little bit over half had to
- 12:49Speaker 4: be disappointed.
- 12:50Speaker 10: Yeah, two loose with the ball. I mean it's very
- 12:52Speaker 10: simple there. There's not a big mystery to what I happened,
- 12:54Speaker 10: and so we'll certainly address it and do a better
- 12:56Speaker 10: job moving forward.
- 12:58Speaker 4: When when something happens like that, funnel like that in
- 13:00Speaker 4: a low red zone going into score, I mean, it
- 13:03Speaker 4: just picks the ear up of the balloom, doesn't it.
- 13:06Speaker 10: Well, that's you talk about contrimary football. You know, that's
- 13:08Speaker 10: where another side's got to rise up and get a
- 13:10Speaker 10: big stop. Unfortunately, they got ten points off of our turnovers,
- 13:14Speaker 10: three of them. The defense did a great job off
- 13:15Speaker 10: of a sudden change on a pump fumble held them
- 13:17Speaker 10: to a field goal. Excellent job. We just we obviously
- 13:20Speaker 10: can't fumble in the red zone and then we got
- 13:22Speaker 10: to get stopped once they get the ball.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Controlling the line of scrimmage. Winning in the trenches is
- 13:26Speaker 4: such a big deal. Did the Patriots move guys out
- 13:30Speaker 4: of gap control responsibilities? Did they not hit them right?
- 13:32Speaker 4: Was a combination? I know you haven't had time to
- 13:34Speaker 4: check it.
- 13:35Speaker 10: Yeah, we'll I have to watch the tay see that.
- 13:37Speaker 11: So what the.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Spot running the football as well? And want to get
- 13:41Speaker 4: that on tracks as well.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Well.
- 13:43Speaker 10: We certainly got a ton of momentum there in the
- 13:44Speaker 10: second half. You know, it felt like we were moving
- 13:46Speaker 10: the ball well, finished with the ball in the end
- 13:48Speaker 10: zone on a great run, great drive. We'd run the
- 13:50Speaker 10: ball well. Unfortunately, the next possession we got the ball
- 13:52Speaker 10: eight minutes down two scores, and so that kind of
- 13:55Speaker 10: takes the ball out of the back's hands in that case,
- 13:56Speaker 10: and we knew we were probably on to get two
- 13:58Speaker 10: possessions left in the game down two posion, so we
- 14:00Speaker 10: had to throw the ball to try to maximize the clock.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Coach, what what did you What did you tell the
- 14:04Speaker 4: guys after the game? What was your What was the
- 14:06Speaker 4: biggest part of your message?
- 14:07Speaker 10: That's what I told you to turn of a battle
- 14:08Speaker 10: and tackling. You know, you can't expect to one week
- 14:10Speaker 10: one when they get two more possessions than you do.
- 14:13Speaker 10: You take points off the board, you know, from one
- 14:15Speaker 10: on the two yard line and and you know, so
- 14:18Speaker 10: it's just in the way we tackle it. At the
- 14:20Speaker 10: end of the game, particularly, it wasn't good enough.
- 14:21Speaker 4: And I and finally, I know a big key for
- 14:24Speaker 4: you was, you know, getting off to that good start
- 14:26Speaker 4: and you did a lot of things to get that accomplishment,
- 14:29Speaker 4: and that just didn't work out. Has to be really frustrating.
- 14:32Speaker 10: You just got to take a deep breath. This is
- 14:34Speaker 10: what we wanted. Uh, we have to be accountable for
- 14:36Speaker 10: why it happened. For row and one, we got sixteen
- 14:38Speaker 10: left to play, tremendous opportunity to go on the road
- 14:41Speaker 10: next week and flip all this momentum. And so again
- 14:44Speaker 10: that's that's how we got to look at it. We
- 14:46Speaker 10: got to handle ourselves internally, not worry about the external noise.
- 14:48Speaker 10: We know we'll be there and I know our guys
- 14:50Speaker 10: will do a great.
- 14:51Speaker 5: Job of that.
- 14:52Speaker 4: And final, final, how did you think Jamar Chase played?
- 14:54Speaker 10: I thought he gave us enough to make some plays
- 14:56Speaker 10: and and we got to continue give him opportunities.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Appreciate you, Thank you.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So the Bengals are zero and one, just like the
- 15:04Speaker 1: Ravens and Browns. The only team in the AFC North
- 15:08Speaker 1: to win its opener was Pittsburgh. Chris Boswell kicked six
- 15:12Speaker 1: field goals, including three from fifty plus as the Steelers
- 15:16Speaker 1: beat the Falcons eighteen ten. Up next for the Bengals
- 15:20Speaker 1: a road game next Sunday afternoon against the two time
- 15:23Speaker 1: defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Bengals Booth
- 15:28Speaker 1: Podcast is brought to you by pay Corps, proud to
- 15:30Speaker 1: be the Bengals official HR software provider, by Alta Fiber
- 15:34Speaker 1: future Proof Fiber Internet designed to elevate your home, business,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and community to a new level, and by kettering health
- 15:41Speaker 1: the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is
- 15:44Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time for
- 15:48Speaker 1: their radio guys recap lap. One of the biggest question
- 15:52Speaker 1: marks about this team going into the season was would
- 15:55Speaker 1: they be able to stop the run better than they
- 15:57Speaker 1: did a year ago? And unfortunately, in Week one the
- 16:01Speaker 1: answer is now. One hundred and seventy rushing yards for
- 16:04Speaker 1: the Patriots. I haven't seen how many of those were
- 16:06Speaker 1: yards after contact, but I'm guessing it was a bunch
- 16:09Speaker 1: for Amandre Stevenson.
- 16:11Speaker 4: No doubt, Dan, he had one hundred and twenty of
- 16:12Speaker 4: them on twenty five carries. He had ten carries of
- 16:16Speaker 4: five yards of more. So it wasn't he wasn't just
- 16:19Speaker 4: like you know, Nicol and Diamondum. He hit one for
- 16:22Speaker 4: fourteen yards, it hits one for sixteen, the next carry
- 16:26Speaker 4: for seventeen two carries later, nineteen yard run. I mean
- 16:30Speaker 4: he had multiple carries of nine yards or more. He
- 16:33Speaker 4: had another twelve yard run. I mean he was consistently
- 16:37Speaker 4: gashing the Cincinnati Bengals front seven. And I asked Zach
- 16:41Speaker 4: after the game that could he tell if it was,
- 16:45Speaker 4: you know, not mental mistake about filling the wrong gap
- 16:48Speaker 4: or getting moved out of the gap, because we talked
- 16:50Speaker 4: about a couple of times during the during the game,
- 16:52Speaker 4: I thought they were getting moved out of the gap
- 16:54Speaker 4: more so than the mental era. But I don't know
- 16:56Speaker 4: what their gap control responsibilities are, so Zach SAIDY have
- 16:59Speaker 4: to look at the tape a little a little closer
- 17:01Speaker 4: to find out. But whatever it was, it certainly wasn't enough.
- 17:05Speaker 4: It wasn't good.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Against the team with a questionable offensive line. Left guard out,
- 17:11Speaker 1: left tackle not thought to be very good. Right guard
- 17:15Speaker 1: rookie dominated in the run game, only surrendered one sack.
- 17:19Speaker 1: That's a very disappointing performance for Cincinnati against that line.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Absolutely because they never got them to where they had
- 17:26Speaker 4: to pass protect. And when they did, I mean four times,
- 17:30Speaker 4: Jacoby Brissett tucked it and ran the football for thirty
- 17:33Speaker 4: four yards. I mean, he was his legs were a factor.
- 17:37Speaker 4: We talked about him. I mean, he's a grown man.
- 17:39Speaker 4: The guy sixty four and thirty five pounds, and he's
- 17:41Speaker 4: got a very quick first step. When he decides to
- 17:43Speaker 4: step up in the pocket, he's sudden, and he's strong,
- 17:46Speaker 4: and he breaks through arm tackles. You know, when you're
- 17:48Speaker 4: trying to sack him. You're not going to sack him
- 17:50Speaker 4: by grabbing him with one hand and sling him to
- 17:52Speaker 4: the ground, and it's just not going to happen. I
- 17:55Speaker 4: thought he was a force. I thought he ran through contact.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I thought, you know, he was a huge factor with
- 18:01Speaker 4: his throwing arm, made enough plays with the throwing arm
- 18:04Speaker 4: and then his feet. He really hurt the Bengals because
- 18:06Speaker 4: I'd say probably four of those carries were on Three
- 18:09Speaker 4: of the four carries were probably on third down where
- 18:11Speaker 4: he moved the chains and kept drives alive.
- 18:14Speaker 1: This was the first time in twenty five years that
- 18:16Speaker 1: Bill Belichick was not the Patriots head coach. If you
- 18:19Speaker 1: watched this game with no video of who was on
- 18:21Speaker 1: the sideline, you would have said it was a Belichick win.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Win the turnover battle to nothing, control the clock, no
- 18:27Speaker 1: silly penalties. I mean, Gerrod Mayo coached for the guy,
- 18:31Speaker 1: played for the guy, and today his team won like
- 18:34Speaker 1: he was still the coach.
- 18:35Speaker 4: At halftime, he came off the field and told the
- 18:38Speaker 4: TV crew were winning in the trenches. Well, you know,
- 18:41Speaker 4: as a former lineman, that's all I was saying the
- 18:42Speaker 4: whole game. I mean, it was so evident, so obvious.
- 18:45Speaker 4: You didn't have to be a football einstein. I mean,
- 18:48Speaker 4: this guy is obviously a brilliant football coach. But yeah,
- 18:51Speaker 4: I mean everything that had to be done, the boxes
- 18:54Speaker 4: that needed to be checked to beat a team like
- 18:56Speaker 4: the Bengals, they did. And the thing that's unbelievable to
- 19:00Speaker 4: me is brought up during the game. They fumbled it
- 19:02Speaker 4: ten times all of last year and lost two two
- 19:05Speaker 4: fumbels the whole season. Best in club history. They have
- 19:10Speaker 4: two fumbels that they lose in this football game a
- 19:12Speaker 4: little over two quarters. So you know, it's it's like
- 19:16Speaker 4: the self destruction, you know, no ball security, shooting yourself
- 19:20Speaker 4: in the foot, whatever you want to call it. It cropped,
- 19:23Speaker 4: its its reared its ugly head, and you know, going
- 19:26Speaker 4: into score Tanner Hudson just tucked that ball away. You know,
- 19:30Speaker 4: don't don't hold it out there and give them an
- 19:31Speaker 4: opportunity in the.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Worst case scenario, get tackled at the one exactly.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I mean, it's like, you know, make sure that you
- 19:38Speaker 4: secure the pig man. I mean, don't don't hold it
- 19:41Speaker 4: out there. You know, in the in the low red zone,
- 19:44Speaker 4: they're coming, there's not that much ground to cover. They're
- 19:47Speaker 4: there if you hold it out there, man, it's like
- 19:49Speaker 4: a big old bulls eye on it, and they're going
- 19:51Speaker 4: for it. And they did and they got it out,
- 19:54Speaker 4: you know, and then I mean everybody's guilty. Special teams,
- 19:58Speaker 4: you know, crucial fum will give them a short field.
- 20:00Speaker 4: They scored ten points off the two fumbles. So you know,
- 20:04Speaker 4: in a game that the Bengals lose by six, the
- 20:07Speaker 4: two turnovers, they didn't turn it over. So yeah, I
- 20:10Speaker 4: mean they played Bill Belichick New York Giant, New England
- 20:17Speaker 4: Patriot football good defense. I mean, they shut down the
- 20:21Speaker 4: running game the Bengals. The Bengals running game was about
- 20:25Speaker 4: one hundred yards less. It was just over seventy yards
- 20:28Speaker 4: to one hundred and seventy for the New England Patriots.
- 20:31Speaker 4: So it was a football feel differential there. And of
- 20:33Speaker 4: course they didn't run an anywhere near as many times.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I mean, shoot, I guess they probably had more than
- 20:38Speaker 4: twenty five carries that Stevenson had. But I mean it
- 20:41Speaker 4: was I thought in the second half it got better
- 20:44Speaker 4: and I thought they played better in the second half.
- 20:46Speaker 4: That first half was I mean, that wasn't Bengals football.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I was like, what am I looking at? I just
- 20:51Speaker 4: didn't recognize what was going on out there.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I'm really mystified by the first three drives. I mean,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you come out, Joe Burrow's gone through camp. Yeah, you're
- 20:59Speaker 1: missing t Higgins. But one, two, three point one, two,
- 21:02Speaker 1: three point one, two three point on your first three
- 21:05Speaker 1: drives of the season.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Stunning, totally, you know, and you're you're looking at a
- 21:10Speaker 4: Patriots defense that's finished in the top ten to four
- 21:13Speaker 4: out of the last five years. They were number seven
- 21:15Speaker 4: last year, and they were returning nine to eleven stars.
- 21:17Speaker 4: But the two stars they lost were significant, but particularly
- 21:21Speaker 4: one a jew Done is a rusher. But man, I
- 21:24Speaker 4: mean they had a lot of guys returning that gave
- 21:26Speaker 4: up only ninety three yards a game on the ground
- 21:29Speaker 4: last year, which was fourth in the league but third
- 21:31Speaker 4: best in Patriot history. Three point three yards of carry
- 21:35Speaker 4: was the lowest that any team has had since the
- 21:37Speaker 4: merger in nineteen seventy. So this team knows how to
- 21:42Speaker 4: stop the run, and they had nine guys returning that
- 21:45Speaker 4: were in the same spots knowing how to stop the run,
- 21:48Speaker 4: and the Bengals really struggled to get their running game going.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I thought, again, you know, almost any level of football.
- 21:55Speaker 4: If it's that imbalanced in the trenches, you're gonna have
- 21:57Speaker 4: trouble winning the football game.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Let's talk about it. Mr Chase targeted six times, six catches,
- 22:03Speaker 1: sixty two yards. I mean, it wasn't the greatest game
- 22:05Speaker 1: he's ever played, but that's pretty impressive considering his lack
- 22:09Speaker 1: of training camp snaps.
- 22:11Speaker 4: No doubt. And the last catch he had was twenty
- 22:13Speaker 4: eight yards, you know, and it looked, you know, in
- 22:15Speaker 4: the middle of the football field. He found a found
- 22:18Speaker 4: an alley, found a lane in there, and he had
- 22:20Speaker 4: a couple of catches double digit yards. You know, I
- 22:24Speaker 4: think he started to climb into a rhythm a little bit.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Uh.
- 22:28Speaker 4: It's when you're going against a defense that good, that
- 22:31Speaker 4: has that good players in the secondary as well, those
- 22:34Speaker 4: guys stopping the run. That's just a very well put
- 22:37Speaker 4: together defense by players that totally understand what they're trying
- 22:41Speaker 4: to do inside out in terms of disguise and you know, confusion, chaos,
- 22:48Speaker 4: all the things that they try to do. It's it
- 22:51Speaker 4: is they're just orchestrated so well. It's like watching you know,
- 22:56Speaker 4: a dance performance, you know, the way everybody just is
- 22:59Speaker 4: in total steps, total sync with each other when when
- 23:03Speaker 4: they're playing that way, it's a it's a beautiful thing
- 23:05Speaker 4: to watch. Unless you're trying to operate against it, it's
- 23:08Speaker 4: not so fun to watch. But man, that was That
- 23:12Speaker 4: was definitely a challenge for him, without any real snaps
- 23:16Speaker 4: anywhere training camp, to go out against that high level,
- 23:20Speaker 4: a caliber of football player that has is in another
- 23:24Speaker 4: level of football conditioning than you are. It's challenging. But
- 23:27Speaker 4: this guy's unique. He's a freakazoid man. He really is.
- 23:31Speaker 1: No complaints about Ryan Rico. In his Bengals debut as punter,
- 23:34Speaker 1: he set a franchise record with an eighty yarder that
- 23:37Speaker 1: traveled seventy yards in the air before going into the
- 23:40Speaker 1: end zone. Averaged more than sixty yards per punt. Very
- 23:44Speaker 1: very impressive work by the young man from BYU.
- 23:47Speaker 4: I asked him if he had one any longer eighty
- 23:49Speaker 4: three he had at BYU, and uh, that's rarefied air,
- 23:53Speaker 4: you know, I mean, that's I'm not saying everybody can
- 23:56Speaker 4: punt the ball eighty three yards of Byu or anywhere,
- 23:59Speaker 4: but for him to an eighty yard here and it
- 24:01Speaker 4: was within a whisker of going out at the foot line,
- 24:04Speaker 4: it could have been an eighty yard net. I mean
- 24:06Speaker 4: it's a sixty yard net, but man, it could have
- 24:08Speaker 4: been an eighty yard net. You talk about flipping the field, man,
- 24:13Speaker 4: you know, and Uh talked to him in the post game.
- 24:15Speaker 4: He's very humble about it, you know. He said it
- 24:17Speaker 4: would have been a lot better to have that record
- 24:19Speaker 4: in a victory, obviously, but I said, you know the
- 24:22Speaker 4: way you flip the field, though, Man, it's gonna be
- 24:24Speaker 4: a weapon that, you know, in football games during the
- 24:27Speaker 4: course of the season, the Bengals gonna lean on you. You've
- 24:30Speaker 4: proven you can do it, and that's gonna be that's
- 24:33Speaker 4: gonna be tough to match every single week.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Though.
- 24:35Speaker 4: But man, and I kidded with him, I said, you
- 24:38Speaker 4: know those Nikes, they got a dynamite cap in that toe,
- 24:41Speaker 4: and you know what did Nike do for you to
- 24:42Speaker 4: get you to explode that ball off your off your toe,
- 24:45Speaker 4: off your foot like that? And he goes, now here's
- 24:47Speaker 4: a standard Nike order, you know, but it's he is. Uh.
- 24:50Speaker 4: He's a big kid. I mean solid six ' four ish,
- 24:54Speaker 4: i'd say two hundred and thirty five pounds. I mean
- 24:56Speaker 4: he looks like a like a linebacker or you know,
- 24:59Speaker 4: something of that tight end, something of that ilk and
- 25:03Speaker 4: he has got some strength in that body. Man.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So the Bengals open with a loss against the team
- 25:09Speaker 1: most of us thought they would beat. Now they've got
- 25:11Speaker 1: to try to beat a team in Week two that
- 25:14Speaker 1: not many people think they're going to win, at least
- 25:16Speaker 1: down the road in Arrowhead against Kansas City.
- 25:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Kansas City has a dogfight against the Baltimore Ravens.
- 25:23Speaker 4: I mean could have been either team's football game. Kansas
- 25:27Speaker 4: City comes out on top. That's good. You know, Baltimore
- 25:30Speaker 4: has a loss in the AFC unfortunately, now so of
- 25:32Speaker 4: the Bengals. So, I mean, you're gonna go to Kansas
- 25:35Speaker 4: City and try to give them, you know, an AFC loss.
- 25:38Speaker 4: And Joe Burrow has beaten Mahomes three times. He's three
- 25:41Speaker 4: and one. He's the only guy I think with a
- 25:43Speaker 4: winning record against Mahomes. Hopefully he can build on that.
- 25:48Speaker 4: It's going to be going to be a challenge. I
- 25:50Speaker 4: mean that place, I mean, Dan, we've been there, but man,
- 25:54Speaker 4: the crowd is so crazy.
- 25:57Speaker 8: Man.
- 25:57Speaker 1: The Bengals certainly know what to expect. This is the
- 26:00Speaker 1: fourth straight year they've played on the road at Kansas City.
- 26:04Speaker 1: All right. So far, this hasn't been the most enjoyable podcast,
- 26:08Speaker 1: but I promise we are ending with a segment that
- 26:11Speaker 1: you will thoroughly enjoy. Season fifty seven is about to
- 26:16Speaker 1: begin for the Cincinnati Bengals, and it's always a treat
- 26:19Speaker 1: to visit with team president Mike Brown. Mike, we typically
- 26:22Speaker 1: go down memory lane in these visits, and I thought
- 26:25Speaker 1: it might be fun to reminisce about some of the
- 26:28Speaker 1: more amusing moments in franchise history. Let's start in nineteen
- 26:34Speaker 1: eighty eight when your then eighty year old father, I
- 26:38Speaker 1: kind of Hall of Fame coach Paul Brown, did the
- 26:41Speaker 1: Icky shuffle in public. Were you as surprised as everybody else?
- 26:47Speaker 7: Not?
- 26:48Speaker 11: Really, I knew how supple he was. He was an
- 26:52Speaker 11: extremely well coordinated man, and that stayed with him until
- 26:57Speaker 11: very close to the end. He was athletic as a youngster.
- 27:03Speaker 11: He could pull ball, played baseball, played center field, he
- 27:09Speaker 11: played football, he played basketball. That part of it never
- 27:15Speaker 11: left him. As a kid. I would get involved with
- 27:19Speaker 11: him out in the backyard shooting baskets, and I thought,
- 27:24Speaker 11: you know, we got this old guy here. He won't
- 27:27Speaker 11: be able to do much in the heck, he could
- 27:30Speaker 11: shoot far better than any of us could. He was
- 27:33Speaker 11: very accurate, and it's hard to lay off and then
- 27:37Speaker 11: go out and put it through, but he could do that.
- 27:45Speaker 11: Was more embarrassed by.
- 27:46Speaker 4: It than.
- 27:49Speaker 11: I know I should have been. I didn't look at
- 27:52Speaker 11: it like others did. I said, oh my god, he's
- 27:54Speaker 11: not doing that.
- 27:55Speaker 1: He did you ever attempt the icky shuffle yourself?
- 28:01Speaker 11: Not even to this moment were there any plans to
- 28:04Speaker 11: do shit, it's.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Not too late.
- 28:07Speaker 1: One year later, in December of nineteen eighty nine, after
- 28:11Speaker 1: fans threw snowballs on the field at Riverfront Stadium, Sam
- 28:14Speaker 1: Whitch took the microphone into his hands and said, you
- 28:17Speaker 1: don't live in Cleveland, you live in Cincinnati. When he
- 28:21Speaker 1: grabbed that microphone, did you instantly think.
- 28:24Speaker 11: Oh, oh, Sam was Sam and he had these moments
- 28:31Speaker 11: that would come upon him when he would act in
- 28:38Speaker 11: unexpected ways. I'll put it, and that was one of them.
- 28:43Speaker 11: I don't think it was pre thought or pre planned.
- 28:48Speaker 11: I think it just blurted out and it was absolutely
- 28:52Speaker 11: perfect because our audience responded to that. They thought it
- 28:58Speaker 11: was funny, they thought it was appropriate, and they stopped
- 29:04Speaker 11: throwing snowballs. I've seen way back during that period when
- 29:11Speaker 11: a league rule required coaches to ask for good behavior
- 29:19Speaker 11: from the stands or for the stands to quiet down
- 29:23Speaker 11: or whatever. And I've seen people like Chuck no and
- 29:29Speaker 11: top coaches, historically famous coaches, they just pretended because they
- 29:35Speaker 11: knew they couldn't do anything about it. They try controlling
- 29:38Speaker 11: a group of fans when they're up in the bit.
- 29:43Speaker 11: It isn't something that's very easy. But Sam, to his credit,
- 29:47Speaker 11: managed it, and I give him great credit.
- 29:52Speaker 3: For the moment.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Here's another Samwich moment, the time he ran up the
- 29:56Speaker 1: score on a coach he didn't like, Jerry Glanville. Sam
- 30:00Speaker 1: successfully tried non side kick up forty five nothing. He
- 30:04Speaker 1: kicked the field goal in the final thirty seconds up
- 30:06Speaker 1: fifty eight to seven. Needless to say, there was no
- 30:09Speaker 1: postgame handshake. Were you amused or horrified?
- 30:13Speaker 5: Oh?
- 30:13Speaker 11: I thought it was probably not the thing to do.
- 30:18Speaker 11: But that was also Sam being Sam. He could have
- 30:23Speaker 11: those moments again. This one I would not have been
- 30:27Speaker 11: so approving.
- 30:29Speaker 5: But.
- 30:31Speaker 11: It didn't mean anything.
- 30:34Speaker 4: It was maybe just.
- 30:39Speaker 11: Being let's say, unpolite.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Any list of amusing moments in Bengals history has to
- 30:47Speaker 1: include something about Chad Johnson I've got a couple of things. First,
- 30:52Speaker 1: the two thousand and nine preseason game, after kickers Shane
- 30:57Speaker 1: Graham strained his groin, Chad drilled a game winning extra point.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Did you have any idea he could kick well?
- 31:05Speaker 11: He always said he was a great soccer player, and
- 31:09Speaker 11: that was a preseason game, if I remember right up
- 31:11Speaker 11: in Boston. He went out and kicked the extra point through.
- 31:19Speaker 11: I think he did a kickoff which went fairly well,
- 31:24Speaker 11: and he did it with never having practiced doing this
- 31:29Speaker 11: sort of thing. Belichick noticed it, and in my mind
- 31:34Speaker 11: the years later he picked up Chad. I thought, maybe
- 31:41Speaker 11: I'm wrong on this. That Chad's performance that day des
- 31:46Speaker 11: grabbed his attention and made the Chad register in his mind.
- 31:54Speaker 1: In two thousand and four, Chad sent bottles of pepto
- 31:58Speaker 1: bismol to the Browns defense backs before a game, implying
- 32:01Speaker 1: that they would be sick to their stomachs after facing him.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Harmless fun or bulletin board material.
- 32:09Speaker 11: I'd put that in the rather stupid department. If you're
- 32:14Speaker 11: going to go toe to toe with somebody, you don't
- 32:18Speaker 11: need to pretend it's professional wrestling. Don't rev them up.
- 32:24Speaker 11: That was what I was taught, and when he did
- 32:28Speaker 11: things like that, I probably wished he had not.
- 32:34Speaker 1: For many fans, the greatest win in franchise history was
- 32:37Speaker 1: the Freezer bowld in nineteen eighty one AFC Championship game.
- 32:41Speaker 1: What was your reaction when my broadcast partner Dave Lapham
- 32:44Speaker 1: convinced his fellow offensive lineman to go sleeveless despite the
- 32:49Speaker 1: minus fifty nine Winshill.
- 32:52Speaker 11: Well, you're bringing up all these stupid actions, that question,
- 32:56Speaker 11: and that was cold. That was so cold that it
- 33:02Speaker 11: didn't feel cold. It felt like burning sensation almost. And
- 33:09Speaker 11: I know the Army books say that you can withstand
- 33:14Speaker 11: that kind of cold if you're appropriately dressed. Well, being
- 33:17Speaker 11: short sleeved as not being appropriately dressed. Our guys thought
- 33:23Speaker 11: it sent a message. Maybe it did. I think that
- 33:27Speaker 11: sent the message was when that door went up and
- 33:31Speaker 11: chargers came out on the field. It was cold. They
- 33:36Speaker 11: weren't used to that. They right there and then I
- 33:40Speaker 11: think put their tails between their legs. They didn't want
- 33:43Speaker 11: any part of that weather. Our guys had practiced in
- 33:47Speaker 11: it forrested make him practice in that, and he wouldn't
- 33:51Speaker 11: let them think that it was anything out of the way.
- 33:57Speaker 11: They were tough and coming from the West Coast when
- 34:02Speaker 11: you hadn't encountered any frigid weather, that would have been
- 34:07Speaker 11: a hard thing to.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Claim, didn't the Charger's owner generously offer to move the
- 34:12Speaker 1: game to San Diego.
- 34:14Speaker 11: Yeah. He came up to me and said, I have
- 34:17Speaker 11: a good idea. He wanted to move the game out
- 34:21Speaker 11: to San Diego, and I said, I don't think so.
- 34:25Speaker 11: Our fans would be disappointed.
- 34:27Speaker 1: They said, all right, I know. This next one probably
- 34:31Speaker 1: was not amusing at the time, but Tim Crumrai broke
- 34:35Speaker 1: his leg in four places in Super Bowl twenty three
- 34:38Speaker 1: and refused to go to the hospital, insisting on watching
- 34:41Speaker 1: the game in the locker room for as long as
- 34:43Speaker 1: he was allowed. This was before cell phones. Were you
- 34:47Speaker 1: aware that that was going on?
- 34:50Speaker 11: I don't think so. It might have been aware later on,
- 34:56Speaker 11: but not immediately, as I recall, And Timmy is a
- 35:03Speaker 11: tough nut, about as rough and tough as they come.
- 35:10Speaker 11: If anyone could have he would have played with that.
- 35:13Speaker 11: But it was obviously an impossibility. It was a serious injury.
- 35:20Speaker 11: The turf was bad. We went down there and that
- 35:25Speaker 11: was a grass field, but it was on a sand
- 35:29Speaker 11: base and overnight the ground's crew made a mistake. They
- 35:35Speaker 11: left the suction on, so all the water was drained
- 35:40Speaker 11: out of the field and it took enough water to
- 35:45Speaker 11: keep the sod attached to the sand. You dig up
- 35:49Speaker 11: these huge divots like bathroom rugs and timmy, I always
- 35:57Speaker 11: thought paid the price for them. That was the thought
- 36:01Speaker 11: that was in my mind. I didn't know about some
- 36:05Speaker 11: of the other aspects until later.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Before drafting Anthony Munio's number three overall in nineteen eighty,
- 36:13Speaker 1: you sent Forrest greg to Los Angeles to work him out,
- 36:16Speaker 1: and in a pass rushing drill, Anthony slammed him so
- 36:19Speaker 1: hard that he knocked Forrest to his backside. Was that
- 36:23Speaker 1: the final confirmation you needed to know that Anthony Munoz
- 36:27Speaker 1: was healthy and your guy.
- 36:29Speaker 11: That was for Forrest the final cont For some of
- 36:33Speaker 11: the rest of us, it probably came along at different points.
- 36:38Speaker 11: I remember at the Rose Bowl game, I was with
- 36:45Speaker 11: my dad and brother and we were sitting watching it
- 36:50Speaker 11: on TV. Anthony played and he just dominated the Ohio
- 36:54Speaker 11: State guy in front of it. That's when I became convinced.
- 37:00Speaker 11: But the thing with Anthony was that not everyone thought
- 37:07Speaker 11: he was going to heal up and be able to
- 37:09Speaker 11: handle our doctor George Balou said he would, and George
- 37:14Speaker 11: was right, and of course Anthony had a Hall of
- 37:18Speaker 11: Fame career.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Forrest Gregg wanted players to wear suits on road trips,
- 37:24Speaker 1: so Harvard educated punter Pat mcinally showed up in a
- 37:28Speaker 1: limo wearing a tuxedo complete with top hat and cane.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Do you remember seeing that?
- 37:35Speaker 11: I fortunately do not, and I wouldn't have cared if
- 37:39Speaker 11: I had. Pat was a live wiren he meant to
- 37:45Speaker 11: be funny and have fun. Forrest would have laughed. I think,
- 37:51Speaker 11: if I remember right, he did. He wouldn't have taken
- 37:54Speaker 11: exception to it at all. It was just any funny
- 38:00Speaker 11: moment for the guys.
- 38:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Final one, This one is more touching than amusing. You
- 38:08Speaker 1: gave Adam Jones a chance to revive his career.
- 38:11Speaker 3: He had eight.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Fine seasons with Cincinnati, and he was so appreciative of
- 38:16Speaker 1: your support that he commissioned an artist to do a
- 38:19Speaker 1: sketch of you and your father watching practice together. What
- 38:24Speaker 1: was your reaction when you receive that gift.
- 38:28Speaker 11: I like Adam Jones. I know he had these incidents
- 38:32Speaker 11: off and on, but Adam Jones is quite bright. He's smart,
- 38:38Speaker 11: he's quick minded. He didn't come up the easy way,
- 38:44Speaker 11: and some of the discipline.
- 38:47Speaker 3: That you lose that you learn with the.
- 38:52Speaker 11: Normal average upbringing. He didn't come across the so there
- 38:59Speaker 11: be times when he would flare out instantly and suffer
- 39:04Speaker 11: the consequences. But if you knew him as a person,
- 39:10Speaker 11: you would admire him because he was fun to talk to,
- 39:14Speaker 11: quick a mind, and I'll never forget how he was
- 39:19Speaker 11: when his little daughter was a premie and it was
- 39:24Speaker 11: predicted that the odds were against her. We were down
- 39:28Speaker 11: at training camp in Georgetown. After practice. He'd get in
- 39:32Speaker 11: his car every night and drive up the Cincinnati to
- 39:36Speaker 11: tap on the window and look at her in the
- 39:40Speaker 11: nursery at the hospital. And the little girl today is
- 39:46Speaker 11: grown and is a wonderful young lady. So when I
- 39:51Speaker 11: think of Adam Jones, I think of things like that,
- 39:55Speaker 11: not some of these other problems that have I've cropped up.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Mike, I always enjoy our visits.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your time and best of
- 40:05Speaker 1: luck this year.
