- 0:07Welcome to a new series of our podcast weekly series.
- 0:11Today, Ray and Annie invite you to explore the powerful emotion of anger,
- 0:16how it originates, how it can be managed, and how biblical insights can guide
- 0:20us toward healthier relationships.
- 0:22Stay tuned. This could change how you see your emotional landscape forever. Here's part one.
- 0:29In the book, The Emotionally Healthy Marriage, authored by Dr.
- 0:33David Stoop and Dr. Jan Stoop, anger is identified as one of the basic emotional
- 0:38postures, B, E, P, that we adopt when under stress or when someone has pushed our buttons.
- 0:45Alongside anger, the other emotions are fear, shame, and sadness.
- 0:50As highlighted in the book, it is crucial to identify and understand what our fallback emotion is.
- 0:56This process often involves some reflection on our history.
- 1:00Understanding the roots of our automatic responses is vital to becoming more
- 1:04emotionally self-aware.
- 1:06Avoiding this reflection reveals a reluctance to face the past circumstances
- 1:11that have shaped our current behavior and personality.
- 1:14We've seen this many times.
- 1:17Evidence can be clear, yet some people resist understanding.
- 1:20Sometimes even twisting scriptures or using accusations of condemnation to justify their stance.
- 1:27What we often fail to realize is that it's not about finding faults in ourselves
- 1:32or others, but about facing the reality of how our past life circumstances.
- 1:37Especially when lived apart from God's authority, have influenced us.
- 1:41Our lack of healthy self-awareness also affects our understanding of our spouse's emotional landscape.
- 1:47When difficult circumstances arise and push us toward vulnerability,
- 1:52we are often surprised to discover our fallback emotion.
- 1:55Then, we find ourselves navigating the effects of these emotions in a cloudy, uncertain way.
- 2:01Anger, along with other emotions, is natural and God-given. It's completely
- 2:06normal and healthy to feel anger at times, especially in response to certain situations.
- 2:12The Bible doesn't condemn anger outright.
- 2:15Rather, it reminds us to manage it so that it doesn't lead us into sin,
- 2:20as noted in Ephesians 4 verse 26.
- 2:23The problem isn't anger itself, but rather its intensity and how we handle it.
- 2:28When anger becomes overwhelming or mismanaged, that's when issues arise.
- 2:33Despite the plethora of self-help books available today, many of us still struggle
- 2:38with falling into the temptation of mismanaging this emotion.
- 2:42Remember, while anger is a gift from God, we should always turn to Him as we navigate it.
- 2:48What God desires from us is our heart. He wants our desires to be aligned with
- 2:53His through delighting in Him, which can only happen when we surrender our hearts
- 2:57to Him, as noted in Psalm 37 verse 4.
- 3:01He calls us to submit under His authority and invites us to ask Him to search
- 3:06our hearts, as noted in Psalm 139 verses 23 to 24.
- 3:11Moreover, God Himself commands us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind.
- 3:17Matthew 22 verse 37.
- 3:20These gods' will and purpose will be challenging for us until we allow Him to heal our hearts.
- 3:26This healing involves revealing and confronting the unhealthy,
- 3:30or even dangerous, webs that cloud our hearts.
- 3:33The Bible warns us that the heart can be deceitful above all things,
- 3:38as noted in Jeremiah 17 verse 9. C. S.
- 3:43Lewis once observed that even we are often unaware of the true condition of
- 3:47our hearts, which are the wellspring of our emotions, including anger.
- 3:52So, for this week, we will explore this emotion through the lens of scripture
- 3:56and deepen our understanding with insights from experts.
- 4:00We'll share how we've been navigating this emotion and how we deal with it during difficult times.
