- 0:39Speaker 3: for thanks so much for tuning in on this Wednesday morning.
- 0:42Speaker 3: And it is a nice morning outside. As I was
- 0:45Speaker 3: driving into work this morning, the sun's out. You can
- 0:47Speaker 3: tell it's going to be a little bit of a
- 0:48Speaker 3: warm day out there. Nothing necessarily wrong with that. Larry
- 0:52Speaker 3: Dawson from Larry Dawson is in studio with us this morning.

- 1:06Speaker 3: eight Lara, How you doing this morning?
- 1:07Speaker 4: I'm doing fine. I'm doing fine. If you are headed
- 1:10Speaker 4: towards Charleston out of Dunlol County, there is a backup
- 1:15Speaker 4: starts at cross Lanes and you'll get through it on
- 1:18Speaker 4: the other side of Institute. He caught me by the
- 1:21Speaker 4: surprise this morning, but mister Cooper texted me this morning
- 1:24Speaker 4: and had asked me a question. I was already up anyway,
- 1:28Speaker 4: so I just left a few minutes early, and fortunately
- 1:31Speaker 4: I did so. But if you are coming to Charleston,
- 1:34Speaker 4: there is looks like to me they're doing a bridge,
- 1:37Speaker 4: so they're swinging the left lane to the right lane
- 1:41Speaker 4: and the right lane to the media or to the burm.
- 1:44Speaker 4: So I don't know if that's very good presentation traffic report.
- 1:50Speaker 4: The other thing, did you see the moon last night? Oh?
- 1:52Speaker 5: Man?
- 1:53Speaker 3: I we went out to try to take a look,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and I think that if we would have waited a
- 1:57Speaker 3: little longer, I fell asleep.
- 1:58Speaker 5: Unfortunately.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I think if we would have waited a little longer,
- 2:00Speaker 3: maybe it would have cleared off a little better for it,
- 2:01Speaker 3: because I heard that the people got some pretty good
- 2:04Speaker 3: views of it, but when we went out, it was
- 2:05Speaker 3: too cloudy.
- 2:06Speaker 4: It's beautiful, and I did not, but I'm sure many
- 2:09Speaker 4: people did that. These cell phones have wonderful.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It's amazing. I actually have a setting that's called like astrophotography,
- 2:17Speaker 3: like on my phone.
- 2:19Speaker 4: So there was I'm sure a lot of pictures taken
- 2:21Speaker 4: and it was very, very pretty, and I think, but
- 2:25Speaker 4: just listing a little bit, I think that's not a
- 2:28Speaker 4: common occurrence. In other words, they called the strawberry Man.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Yeah, strawberry Yeah.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Speaking of strawberries, I got fresh strawberries out that's about
- 2:36Speaker 4: breakfast is out of my car, so I'll eat them
- 2:38Speaker 4: when I get back to my office.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Not to throw out an endorsement unwarranted, but just as
- 2:44Speaker 3: a strawberry lover, because I absolutely love strawberries. The South
- 2:48Speaker 3: Charleston farmers Market, I can't even remember the name of
- 2:51Speaker 3: the farmer now that does it, And I feel bad
- 2:54Speaker 3: for that, because I literally got the best strawberries I've had.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I used to pick strawberries in Michigan. They have a
- 2:59Speaker 3: bunch of strawberr farms up there and those strawberries are delicious.
- 3:02Speaker 3: These are the best strawberries I've had since then. They
- 3:03Speaker 3: are They were incredible. We ate two whole packages of
- 3:06Speaker 3: them this weekend. My kid ate them and my wife
- 3:08Speaker 3: ate them.
- 3:08Speaker 5: I ate them. They were great.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Well, I bet you I visit that today because when
- 3:12Speaker 4: I leave, I hear I have a couple of stops
- 3:15Speaker 4: to pay for a couple of cars that I purchased,
- 3:18Speaker 4: and I had some paving done yesterday. Piece of real
- 3:24Speaker 4: estate I own. I've been waiting for quite some time
- 3:29Speaker 4: to have my go to contractor pave it. And you know,
- 3:37Speaker 4: we've talked about this for probably since I've been orn
- 3:42Speaker 4: is referrals and getting back and staying in contact. And
- 3:47Speaker 4: there's an academic I don't somebody's gonna have to set
- 3:50Speaker 4: me down and explain to me why you don't return
- 3:53Speaker 4: a text. I just don't know. It's so simple. And
- 3:57Speaker 4: on the other end, when you don't receive it from
- 4:00Speaker 4: what you think is someone that A you know or
- 4:02Speaker 4: B you're doing business with. I just could only imagine
- 4:06Speaker 4: the struggle that people has, and I see it because
- 4:09Speaker 4: so many people still contacts me about a question about
- 4:12Speaker 4: an automibile. I was telling Fred I said, I'm going
- 4:15Speaker 4: to do this until those questions quit coming in or
- 4:20Speaker 4: that need of someone helping them purchase or sell their car.
- 4:25Speaker 4: And I'm a very get back to you fella. Now
- 4:28Speaker 4: do I stay busy. I'm extremely busy though I'm really
- 4:31Speaker 4: not working. But yesterday I was handling a lot of
- 4:34Speaker 4: balls in the air. But I return my text, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 4: the other day, and it's a simple text. I mean
- 4:40Speaker 4: it's a simple request that mister Peyton has got a
- 4:43Speaker 4: secretary from Buffalo and I met her. Fact I call
- 4:47Speaker 4: her missus Buffalo, so we'll leave her name with that.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I mean, she's a lovely lady, been with mister Peyton
- 4:52Speaker 4: for a long time. She had a simple question dealing
- 4:54Speaker 4: with the car of a lost loved one. And you
- 4:57Speaker 4: can get on that Google or whatever you want to call.
- 5:01Speaker 4: But ors you could just simply call or text May
- 5:05Speaker 4: and I'm going to give you a legitimate, truthful, honest answer.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And if I can be any more informative or helpful,
- 5:13Speaker 4: I do it and it's free. I helped the gentleman
- 5:17Speaker 4: the other day. I don't know, I don't know how.
- 5:20Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, I should accounted before I
- 5:22Speaker 4: come on here, how many texts he and I exchanged
- 5:25Speaker 4: and how many days weeks changed to help him buy
- 5:30Speaker 4: a car here in town. And I end up buying
- 5:32Speaker 4: his car. And it resulted in two trips to Charleston,
- 5:38Speaker 4: one to look and one to buy, and probably a
- 5:41Speaker 4: week if baby two weeks worth of text helping him
- 5:45Speaker 4: find a car, landing on a car, hooking him up
- 5:49Speaker 4: with a salesperson at this particular dealership. And then he
- 5:53Speaker 4: started asking me about interest rates, and I really didn't
- 5:56Speaker 4: know exactly, but I've done this all my life and
- 5:59Speaker 4: I should told him. I said, you should be within
- 6:02Speaker 4: this number of percentage wise. Well I missed it by
- 6:06Speaker 4: point one, he tells me. And he says, you are
- 6:09Speaker 4: off by point one, not one point one. And I said,
- 6:14Speaker 4: we'll just go with it. In anyway, long story short,
- 6:17Speaker 4: he was able to buy his family a new vehicle,
- 6:20Speaker 4: and I purchased his car, allowed a store to sell
- 6:24Speaker 4: a car in his town, allowed him to sell me
- 6:26Speaker 4: his car because he was going to take that money
- 6:29Speaker 4: and maybe air marked for something else. Because when you
- 6:33Speaker 4: roll your car into a purchase, all your equity goes
- 6:38Speaker 4: into that car. That's not money you can spend. That's
- 6:43Speaker 4: if you sell to me you have that money, you
- 6:45Speaker 4: can I mean, you can vacate. The list goes on
- 6:48Speaker 4: and on and on from vacation to maybe you have
- 6:50Speaker 4: school supplies or school two issue that you don't want
- 6:54Speaker 4: to roll into that purchase. And I'm helping a guy
- 6:58Speaker 4: right now. And it started actually with a car recession
- 7:00Speaker 4: down to the marina and a lot of people calls me ld.
- 7:04Speaker 4: He said, hey, ld, walk over here, look at my truck.
- 7:07Speaker 4: And I looked at it, and he has a nice
- 7:09Speaker 4: truck and he said, I'm thinking about buying a new one.
- 7:12Speaker 4: I said, here, call this guy right here, he runs
- 7:15Speaker 4: his store. Call him and he did, and they weren't
- 7:20Speaker 4: able to maybe get on the same agreeable figure or
- 7:24Speaker 4: the trade in allowance. Well, the next week I kind
- 7:28Speaker 4: of asked him, I said, where's that new truck And
- 7:30Speaker 4: he said, well, we're a little bit off and he
- 7:33Speaker 4: he shared with me the numbers. Well I stopped in
- 7:36Speaker 4: there yesterday. Now I have no dog in this hunt
- 7:39Speaker 4: at all. And I walked in, walked up to him
- 7:42Speaker 4: and we got talking farming and brush hogs and this
- 7:44Speaker 4: and what and you know this and that, and I said, hey,
- 7:47Speaker 4: by the way, let me tell you where this gentleman's at.
- 7:50Speaker 4: If you can do this number, I believe you can
- 7:52Speaker 4: sell you him a truck. He looked at me, said yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 4: I can do that. I said, okay, I walked out.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I text my friend. I said, call him. You two
- 8:03Speaker 4: can get together. And and I said to the gentleman
- 8:07Speaker 4: and runs the store, I said, And by the way,
- 8:09Speaker 4: i'll buy as trade in. Let it flow through here
- 8:11Speaker 4: for tax credits. That you know, I'll pay more than
- 8:14Speaker 4: what you you were valuating at that and that way
- 8:18Speaker 4: it's a win win win. He said, we'll do that.
- 8:23Speaker 4: All that was free, you know, I don't I don't
- 8:26Speaker 4: charge for this and the and the nice thing about
- 8:28Speaker 4: it is, as I tell people, it's it's factual. You
- 8:32Speaker 4: don't have to google what I tell you, you know. In
- 8:34Speaker 4: other words, I have no other reason to be straight
- 8:38Speaker 4: up with you, try to help you in a way,
- 8:41Speaker 4: and then you know, maybe later down the road you'll
- 8:44Speaker 4: throw the dog a bone or you'll sell me a car. Now,
- 8:48Speaker 4: i'll make his story short. There was a gentleman come
- 8:50Speaker 4: in my store two weeks ago, and I kind of
- 8:54Speaker 4: recognized him, but I just didn't grasp it all all
- 8:58Speaker 4: at once. And because he was in there about two
- 9:01Speaker 4: months ago. He walks in, eyes actually just setting out.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I don't even know what I was doing. I was
- 9:07Speaker 4: just sitting there and he said, Larry, I want to
- 9:10Speaker 4: thank you. I said, well, okay for what he said.
- 9:15Speaker 4: You remember me. I come in here about two months
- 9:17Speaker 4: ago to sell you, and I believe it was his
- 9:20Speaker 4: daughter's car. Could be wife, could be granddaughter, I don't remember,
- 9:23Speaker 4: but he female was with him, and I'm thinking it
- 9:25Speaker 4: was his daughter. I was wanting to sell you the car.
- 9:28Speaker 4: And we sit here and talk to he said, a matter
- 9:30Speaker 4: of fact, we talked for about an hour, and you
- 9:33Speaker 4: said to me, you can probably take this car from
- 9:37Speaker 4: one end to the valley to the next. Because I
- 9:39Speaker 4: see you're going to do this, and you're going to
- 9:41Speaker 4: try to sell this car. I doubt you'll find more
- 9:44Speaker 4: than a five hundred dollars variation in offers. You might,
- 9:48Speaker 4: but probably not. And he said you are wrong in
- 9:52Speaker 4: that area. He said, you are the heist, right. He
- 9:56Speaker 4: said you were the heist. He said the guy down
- 9:58Speaker 4: the road and he pointed, unwell, I mention name the
- 10:01Speaker 4: dealer or the other in a Nitro was three thousand
- 10:04Speaker 4: dollars less than you, he says, And you took your
- 10:08Speaker 4: time and you spent an hour with us, he said.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Now I've done something else with a vehicle. He said.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I did not sell to a dealer here in the valley.
- 10:15Speaker 4: But he said, you took your time, and you shared,
- 10:19Speaker 4: and you sit in there and you talked and gave
- 10:22Speaker 4: me a lot of suggestions, he says, And I want
- 10:25Speaker 4: to thank you. I was blown away and I said, well,
- 10:30Speaker 4: thank you for coming.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Telling me, because at this point, this is highly unusual anyway,
- 10:33Speaker 3: because people almost never revisit some even when you get
- 10:37Speaker 3: good service, people very rarely revisit that as an effort
- 10:41Speaker 3: on their own part, you know, if they saw you
- 10:42Speaker 3: down the street and I'm like, oh, hey, you really
- 10:44Speaker 3: helped me out that one time. But to make it
- 10:45Speaker 3: a concentrated effort, you never see that.
- 10:48Speaker 4: And this man told me, he said, Larry, I've been
- 10:49Speaker 4: by here twice, so.
- 10:51Speaker 5: He wanted to make sure he see you.
- 10:53Speaker 4: And I just was really taken back by He was
- 10:58Speaker 4: very sincere. Evidently I asked some information long to him,
- 11:01Speaker 4: allowed him to do what he was doing. It did
- 11:03Speaker 4: not happen here in the valley. He did shop that
- 11:07Speaker 4: car from one end to the other. He had a
- 11:09Speaker 4: negative equity. I understand his position. He was wanting to
- 11:12Speaker 4: lessen that negative equity the best he could because he
- 11:15Speaker 4: was going to have to supply the difference. You know,
- 11:18Speaker 4: I can understand that. And once again, I think it
- 11:20Speaker 4: was his daughter. So let's say it was you have
- 11:23Speaker 4: a daughter. Sure, you know as a father helping a
- 11:25Speaker 4: daughter or a father helping a loved one and so,
- 11:28Speaker 4: and you are going to be the one that ultimately
- 11:30Speaker 4: pays the difference, and so you do want the best.
- 11:33Speaker 4: And the three thousand dollars valuation was on the extreme.
- 11:39Speaker 4: But he did share with me that I was the
- 11:41Speaker 4: highest offer. And I rarely am one will sit there
- 11:45Speaker 4: and make an offer. I sit there and what I
- 11:48Speaker 4: do is talk, and because the last thing I want
- 11:51Speaker 4: to do is offend somebody. I bought a lady's car.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I don't know two months ago that I believe I
- 11:58Speaker 4: told this story. She was a ninety plus your years old.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Her son called me delicate situation, mom's aging. I had
- 12:04Speaker 4: a mother and age. I had to go through that
- 12:07Speaker 4: and I was able to buy the car. But as
- 12:09Speaker 4: he and I were sharing information, I said, look, I'm
- 12:12Speaker 4: just not going to make you an offer because you
- 12:16Speaker 4: might have a number in your head, and the last
- 12:18Speaker 4: thing I want to do is count your money. And
- 12:21Speaker 4: I will never count anybody's money. And what I'm saying is,
- 12:25Speaker 4: I'm not going to evaluate what you own. If you
- 12:28Speaker 4: want to share with me the proximity of what you're
- 12:30Speaker 4: looking for. If we are close, then we're going to
- 12:33Speaker 4: talk and I'm going to I'm going to try to
- 12:35Speaker 4: do what I can do to help you. But if
- 12:37Speaker 4: you got on that mister Google Internet, let me see
- 12:40Speaker 4: what my car's worth, and went to that far left column,
- 12:43Speaker 4: the extra clean column, and you zero in on that number,
- 12:47Speaker 4: and forget about all the rest, We're probably not I'm
- 12:49Speaker 4: probably not going to build buy your car, and I
- 12:51Speaker 4: doubt anyone else can be the person that buys your car.
- 12:56Speaker 4: You know, it's like the real estate. You look at
- 12:58Speaker 4: houses in your you live in Kenoss City, I believe
- 13:01Speaker 4: you look in Winfield area. We could probably find very
- 13:05Speaker 4: comparable square footage brick homes, vital side homes, two story homes,
- 13:09Speaker 4: and there's going to be a different evaluation because it's location, location, location, Well,
- 13:15Speaker 4: automobiles are region and what works in one area doesn't
- 13:19Speaker 4: work in other areas, and it is just an all
- 13:22Speaker 4: a guessing game, you know. It's it's no different from
- 13:25Speaker 4: taking your vehicle and putting out here on the fakebook
- 13:29Speaker 4: world and getting all the craziness that you're going to
- 13:32Speaker 4: go through. If you want to go through that, you
- 13:34Speaker 4: might if all the stars and moons lined up, you
- 13:37Speaker 4: might get that far left column number. But that's a
- 13:41Speaker 4: long shot, Dell.
- 13:43Speaker 3: One thing that I read here recently that I kind
- 13:45Speaker 3: of put my memory banks to share the next time
- 13:47Speaker 3: we had to show, We'll take a break in night.
- 13:49Speaker 3: If you want to call in, you're more looking to
- 13:50Speaker 3: give it to call three zero four three four five
- 13:51Speaker 3: fifty to fifty eight. Three zero four three four five
- 13:53Speaker 3: fifty fifty to our number. You can give us a
- 13:54Speaker 3: call this morning if you want to talk to Larry
- 13:56Speaker 3: Dawson from my we By Cars. We By Cars four
- 14:00Speaker 3: three four five fifteen to fifty eight is our number
- 14:02Speaker 3: this morning, and you can give us a call. But
- 14:05Speaker 3: there was this the story that was shared that I
- 14:08Speaker 3: read about. I had no way to vet it, but
- 14:10Speaker 3: I thought that it was that it was close to
- 14:13Speaker 3: what we talk about a lot where I thought to
- 14:16Speaker 3: share it would be instructive to people because you never
- 14:18Speaker 3: know the situation you're in. And you've mentioned on this
- 14:20Speaker 3: program many times about sort of the rolling the dice
- 14:24Speaker 3: that you have when you when you put something like
- 14:26Speaker 3: on Facebook or something like that you're trying to sell
- 14:27Speaker 3: your car, and then somebody contacts you they want to.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Sell your car. You don't really know who you're talking to.
- 14:32Speaker 3: You know, maybe you trust the Facebook account, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 3: or the Instagram whatever it is. Maybe you trust that account,
- 14:38Speaker 3: but you don't really know who you're talking to. There
- 14:41Speaker 3: was a story that was shared a from a I
- 14:44Speaker 3: don't know a young lady, but a lady who was
- 14:46Speaker 3: looking to sell a car that she had and she
- 14:49Speaker 3: decided to go through I think it was Instagram to
- 14:52Speaker 3: put pictures of her car on there and then try
- 14:54Speaker 3: to sell it. And she got some responses and things
- 14:58Speaker 3: like that, and then she got an account that was
- 15:00Speaker 3: super aggressive responding to hers like I love that car.
- 15:02Speaker 3: It's like when my sister had or something, and I
- 15:04Speaker 3: really want to get it. I can't remember. There was
- 15:06Speaker 3: some story attached to it where this person not only
- 15:09Speaker 3: bid the highest, but they were also like really interested
- 15:12Speaker 3: in getting the car and was really easy to work
- 15:15Speaker 3: with to set up a date to you know, exchange
- 15:17Speaker 3: paperwork or whatever it might be. Anyway, long the long
- 15:20Speaker 3: not to get into details because they don't matter. What
- 15:22Speaker 3: ends up happening is when she shows up to do
- 15:24Speaker 3: this whole thing with the car or whatever. It was
- 15:26Speaker 3: an X that she had fled from who had catfished
- 15:30Speaker 3: her by creating an alternative account on Instagram because he
- 15:33Speaker 3: wasn't able to find her for years, and this was
- 15:35Speaker 3: the way that he caught her into a parking lot
- 15:37Speaker 3: and now nothing happened to her. Of course, I guess
- 15:39Speaker 3: I don't know what happened to resolve the situation, but
- 15:41Speaker 3: it scared the Jesus out of her, and it made
- 15:44Speaker 3: me think. I was like, man, that is exactly the
- 15:46Speaker 3: type of story that Larry cautions against all the time,
- 15:48Speaker 3: because you don't know who's on the other end of
- 15:50Speaker 3: that internet chat, you know. I mean, maybe it's the
- 15:53Speaker 3: person that you think it is, and they'll do the
- 15:55Speaker 3: transaction the way it should be, and maybe things will
- 15:57Speaker 3: go find I'm sure that's happened who knows how many
- 15:59Speaker 3: times in the history of transactions. But what I just
- 16:03Speaker 3: mentioned that happens too, And there's only one way that
- 16:05Speaker 3: you can keep that from happening has to do business
- 16:07Speaker 3: with people you know.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Well, yes, that is true, and one thing about it,
- 16:12Speaker 4: and I pride myself on this. If you text me
- 16:17Speaker 4: or you call me and I'm not in a position
- 16:19Speaker 4: to take that, I promise you that I'll get myself
- 16:23Speaker 4: in position if nothing else, to text you back or
- 16:28Speaker 4: call you back and say, look, I'm kind of covered
- 16:30Speaker 4: up here. Could I have an hour or two, but
- 16:34Speaker 4: I will respond, and I do. Once again, I don't
- 16:36Speaker 4: understand not respond, especially in business or friendship. You text
- 16:41Speaker 4: me this morning, I don't know. Was it five forty
- 16:43Speaker 4: five six o'clock? I mean, how long was it until
- 16:46Speaker 4: I responded?
- 16:47Speaker 3: In fifteen twenty minutes something like that, maybe not even that.
- 16:49Speaker 3: I put my phone down knowing that you would respond
- 16:52Speaker 3: way before I needed to know the answer.
- 16:54Speaker 4: That's how I was taught and I don't stray from that.
- 16:57Speaker 4: And you want to get I bought a farm implement
- 17:02Speaker 4: last week to addition to my implements at the farm.
- 17:08Speaker 4: And it is people's knows that I have a farm
- 17:12Speaker 4: that I work. Really are that long story short. I
- 17:16Speaker 4: went into a store, a big store, a great big
- 17:19Speaker 4: store that sells farm implements. I come out of there
- 17:24Speaker 4: with nothing but a price. I got no information. I
- 17:29Speaker 4: didn't know anything about a gearbox. I knew nothing. I
- 17:32Speaker 4: knew a price. So I went to my office. But
- 17:37Speaker 4: I'm going to give a shout out to Darren Griffith
- 17:39Speaker 4: at Tractor Pros right off the Saint Auban's accident. I
- 17:43Speaker 4: kind of know Darren, but I really don't know Darren
- 17:45Speaker 4: that well. I called Dre and I said, Darren Larry Dawson. Yes,
- 17:49Speaker 4: they took my call. I said, I'm looking at a
- 17:53Speaker 4: farm implement of brushaw I gave him a number. He said,
- 17:57Speaker 4: drive over. He said, pull up to the door. He said,
- 18:00Speaker 4: we'll get on my golf cart and i'll show it
- 18:04Speaker 4: to you. Well, it's not that far, so I did.
- 18:08Speaker 4: I received more information about brush hogs in fifteen minutes
- 18:15Speaker 4: that I had no idea. I mean, he showed me
- 18:18Speaker 4: the model, the gearbox, the blade, on and on. I
- 18:22Speaker 4: bought it. I never even asked the price until the end.
- 18:27Speaker 4: I wanted information, So when he gave me a price,
- 18:30Speaker 4: it was a better price than the store that I
- 18:33Speaker 4: had just left. But all I got out of that
- 18:36Speaker 4: other store was a price I got to walk through.
- 18:39Speaker 4: I mean, I got all the information, and so I
- 18:42Speaker 4: simply said, I said, when can you have this ready?
- 18:44Speaker 4: Because they have to put gear on the gearbox and
- 18:48Speaker 4: you just can't you and I just can't pick it up.
- 18:49Speaker 4: I mean it's going to be attached to a tractor
- 18:51Speaker 4: to put on a loading, whether you're going to be
- 18:53Speaker 4: an attractor or a trailer, whatever you're going to bring.
- 18:56Speaker 4: And he said this afternoon. Well, by that time the
- 19:01Speaker 4: next day it was at my farm, attached to Mi
- 19:03Speaker 4: Caboda and I was brush hogging. And it started with
- 19:08Speaker 4: simply just asking. I didn't ask the price. I wanted
- 19:12Speaker 4: some information. I got price at one place. So you
- 19:15Speaker 4: think that price is almighty, well take that price. Not
- 19:18Speaker 4: having information, it was valuable. I mean I learned so
- 19:22Speaker 4: much about a brush hog.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You know what's kind of weird about that too. And
- 19:26Speaker 3: this memory comes from the Lord. It must be twenty
- 19:29Speaker 3: years ago now. But the owner of a business that
- 19:32Speaker 3: I used to manage had a hard time buying a
- 19:35Speaker 3: car one and he was extraordinarily wealthy, very very wealthy.
- 19:40Speaker 3: But he didn't act like it, or dressed like it
- 19:41Speaker 3: or anything else. In fact, I think he tried to
- 19:43Speaker 3: buy the car and he was wearing what he had
- 19:46Speaker 3: just dressed a deer down in he was covered in
- 19:48Speaker 3: blood and everything, you know, but he wanted a Porsche
- 19:50Speaker 3: of all things. But because he wasn't priced conscious when
- 19:53Speaker 3: he started talking to the people at the deal like
- 19:55Speaker 3: he just walked in one day, trust like, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 3: like a guy that just came from a deer so whatever.
- 20:01Speaker 3: But you know, he wasn't asking about how much does
- 20:03Speaker 3: this car costs? He was asking a bunch of other
- 20:05Speaker 3: questions about it, and nobody took him seriously. Nobody took
- 20:08Speaker 3: him seriously at the dealership. He like went to person
- 20:10Speaker 3: to person to person like talking to him about it,
- 20:12Speaker 3: and they just saw this guy, kind of messy looking
- 20:15Speaker 3: guy with like probably deer guts all over him or
- 20:17Speaker 3: mud or whatever.
- 20:18Speaker 5: They're like, man, what is this crazy guy doing?
- 20:19Speaker 3: He ended up walking across the street and buying I
- 20:22Speaker 3: forget what it was, a Jaguar or something I think
- 20:24Speaker 3: instead cash that day because he just wanted to buy
- 20:28Speaker 3: a car. And somebody lost out on that cell because
- 20:30Speaker 3: they just wentn't give him the time of day because
- 20:31Speaker 3: he didn't look the part and he wasn't price curious.
- 20:34Speaker 3: He wanted to know more about like the features of
- 20:36Speaker 3: the vehicle.
- 20:37Speaker 4: You never know what a conversation, a return of a text,
- 20:42Speaker 4: a return of a phone call can lead you to.
- 20:46Speaker 4: And it is just once again, Carvey Payton's secretary. She
- 20:52Speaker 4: asked me in the information. It was very important to her.
- 20:56Speaker 4: I answered it, and maybe six weeks from now, six
- 20:59Speaker 4: years from now, somebody say they want it. She said, hey,
- 21:02Speaker 4: how about Larry Dawson, because I will respond. I will
- 21:05Speaker 4: get back to you. And that's probably where I get
- 21:08Speaker 4: most my leads is from frustration, because I do not
- 21:12Speaker 4: advertise there's no there's no there's Larry Dawson in Larry
- 21:17Speaker 4: Dawson's reputation. But I could do come on the show
- 21:19Speaker 4: and try to spread the word. I'm at three oh
- 21:21Speaker 4: four five four five o two eleven. I have had
- 21:25Speaker 4: that number since nineteen eighty nine, so it's a pretty
- 21:28Speaker 4: easy number if you have a question. I was driving
- 21:32Speaker 4: to Snowshoe and Jerry Waters. It calls in here quite often.
- 21:36Speaker 4: He called me and I had just an ounce of
- 21:40Speaker 4: signal and I realized it was Jerry. I pulled over
- 21:42Speaker 4: the side road because I knew before I got to
- 21:44Speaker 4: Craigsville I was going to drop the call. He had
- 21:47Speaker 4: a question about a title he was selling a motorcycle.
- 21:50Speaker 4: I pulled over and took my time and I said,
- 21:52Speaker 4: Jerry this, you know, I shared the information that I
- 21:55Speaker 4: had knowledge of about his situation, and back in the
- 22:00Speaker 4: car and kept on going. Well, I mean, I was
- 22:04Speaker 4: helping someone and once again I my services are free,
- 22:07Speaker 4: and in this day and time, it's hard to get
- 22:10Speaker 4: somebody's attention free.
- 22:12Speaker 3: The one thing that you that you've really illustrated and
- 22:15Speaker 3: people could take a lot of, uh take a lot
- 22:18Speaker 3: away from this is the bread crumbs that you have
- 22:20Speaker 3: or let's i could call them more seeds that you
- 22:22Speaker 3: planned during your your your decades in business. You talk
- 22:26Speaker 3: about how your referrals or these these contacts are your
- 22:30Speaker 3: best referrals.
- 22:30Speaker 5: Are the people that you.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Just have conversations with that remember you later, that come
- 22:35Speaker 3: back with you later. That is a I mean, obviously
- 22:38Speaker 3: it's a successful style of doing business. It's this way
- 22:40Speaker 3: the business always used to be done, and and and
- 22:43Speaker 3: you're kind of a holdout on that type of thing.
- 22:45Speaker 3: But think about even somebody that works very hard, like
- 22:47Speaker 3: somebody in the what we call the gig economy these days,
- 22:49Speaker 3: like say you're working as a.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Driver for Uber and you delivery groceries.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Or something along those lines there there if if they're
- 22:55Speaker 3: if these businesses were were at the point where you
- 22:59Speaker 3: could trust where you could sow those seeds, Like if
- 23:01Speaker 3: you were a really good Uber driver or a really
- 23:03Speaker 3: good personal grocery shop or something like that, I could
- 23:06Speaker 3: conceivably see where that might work out in the future
- 23:08Speaker 3: for you, where you could plant those seeds, and you know,
- 23:10Speaker 3: people would be, hey, that this person does a great
- 23:12Speaker 3: job with this. The problem is is those businesses are
- 23:15Speaker 3: so transactional and so impersonal that nobody does it like that.
- 23:19Speaker 3: It's all a very generic you know, hey, George is
- 23:22Speaker 3: bringing your groceries. They like there's no contact involved with it.
- 23:25Speaker 3: A lot of the time you can opt out of
- 23:27Speaker 3: contact and you're like, hey, I don't want contact at all.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Just leave the stuff on my step and we're good.
- 23:31Speaker 5: You know.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I mean, if I was the person doing the delivery,
- 23:34Speaker 3: driving and the different things like that, I would not
- 23:36Speaker 3: want that at all. I would want to talk to
- 23:37Speaker 3: the person, shake their hand. Hey, I made sure that
- 23:39Speaker 3: I put the eggs in this bag for you, so
- 23:41Speaker 3: they stay called, you know whatever, Like you want to
- 23:43Speaker 3: provide the service to maybe get that service down the
- 23:46Speaker 3: line and get better tips, so on and so forth.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Nobody thinks like that now. It's all very transactional in nature.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Well, all businesses was built from day one successful business
- 23:57Speaker 4: that's been around for decades and decades, which is a
- 24:01Speaker 4: WHS West Virginia Radio, the race, the family. The businesses
- 24:07Speaker 4: start with a foundation, and if you build your fan
- 24:11Speaker 4: foundation on sand, you're not gonna make it. You might
- 24:15Speaker 4: make it for a while, but you're not gonna make
- 24:17Speaker 4: it for the long haul.
- 24:18Speaker 3: It's a great conversation we're having, as we do every
- 24:20Speaker 3: time that Larry Dawson is in studio, second Wednesday of
- 24:22Speaker 3: every month. Larry Dawson we buy cars. He buy cars,

- 26:18Speaker 3: You're listening to the Voice of Charleston five ed w
- 26:20Speaker 3: c HS. I'm del Cooper. Thanks for tuning in on
- 26:22Speaker 3: this Wednesday morning. Editor. At least this studio doesn't have
- 26:26Speaker 3: any windows, but when we came in this morning, it
- 26:27Speaker 3: looked like it was going to be a pretty nice date.
- 26:29Speaker 3: So hopefully that's going to maintain my gosh. Yeah, no,
- 26:32Speaker 3: wind doesn't here, No one doesn't here. It's a nice studio,
- 26:34Speaker 3: but there's no windows.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I'm a mushroom. You know you just said something's right
- 26:39Speaker 4: and that you you said that we are talking off
- 26:44Speaker 4: the air about a relationship and business that I have
- 26:47Speaker 4: had and kind of sort of ended yesterday because of
- 26:50Speaker 4: non response and a new business did the job I
- 26:53Speaker 4: needed to die. Now, I won't bore the listening audience
- 26:56Speaker 4: with what that was. But Dell just said, you know
- 26:59Speaker 4: it the end of a relationship, and I didn't end it.
- 27:03Speaker 4: It ended a non response, but a new one got
- 27:06Speaker 4: started by me simply walking across the street with it
- 27:11Speaker 4: to a company that did exactly what I was trying
- 27:14Speaker 4: to get done and didn't know me from Adam. I said,
- 27:17Speaker 4: could you walk over and look at this and maybe
- 27:20Speaker 4: maybe why you guys are in this area? I could
- 27:23Speaker 4: have this paving done. They did never asked them a price.
- 27:27Speaker 4: I said, this is how I'd like to do it,
- 27:29Speaker 4: and by the way, how much is this We sat
- 27:32Speaker 4: and talked. Now out of courtesy, I called bout go
- 27:37Speaker 4: to that has done this work and basically got blown off.
- 27:43Speaker 3: That's really something else, somebody that you've done business with
- 27:45Speaker 3: time and time and his father, Yeah, that's really something else.
- 27:48Speaker 4: So the end of probably my relationship is the beginning
- 27:55Speaker 4: of another relationship because they were eager for new business.
- 28:00Speaker 4: This one assumed they had it and just kept kicking
- 28:02Speaker 4: me down the road.
- 28:04Speaker 3: There is something strange that's happened, and I don't know
- 28:07Speaker 3: if it's because everybody got an attitude during COVID or
- 28:12Speaker 3: I don't know what the deal is with it. But
- 28:14Speaker 3: but there's something with entrepreneurs, with small business owners and
- 28:18Speaker 3: large ones. To believe me, the big places are terrible.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Now.
- 28:21Speaker 3: There is no such thing as customer service anymore. It's
- 28:22Speaker 3: all it's all like a it's all like a Russian
- 28:25Speaker 3: nesting doll. Another level, another level. Never you never talked
- 28:28Speaker 3: to a natural person anymore. But even with smaller businesses,
- 28:32Speaker 3: which in which I love, don't get me wrong, But
- 28:34Speaker 3: in the past you could always assume that sort of
- 28:37Speaker 3: level of community, pride in providing service and things like that.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Something happened within the last eight years or something. There's
- 28:44Speaker 3: been this switch where customers have become adversaries. Right where
- 28:48Speaker 3: did this come from? Where your customer is your adversary?
- 28:52Speaker 3: Is it the review culture online? Or what is it?
- 28:54Speaker 5: Why?
- 28:55Speaker 4: What? I refuse to participate? Yes, yes, I'm still a
- 28:59Speaker 4: person at community. My language may and my words and
- 29:04Speaker 4: pronunciation may not be exactly proper. I wasn't an English scholar,
- 29:09Speaker 4: but I can get out to you what I need
- 29:11Speaker 4: to say, and I got ears that really most people
- 29:14Speaker 4: tell me, he said, bile, he can hear, and so
- 29:17Speaker 4: I can understand what you're telling me. Let me tell
- 29:20Speaker 4: you something. When you start texting, that can be perceived
- 29:23Speaker 4: in the wrong way. Oh yes, And if you blow
- 29:26Speaker 4: a text off and you don't answer, that gets received
- 29:28Speaker 4: a whole lot worse. So it's a whole lot better
- 29:32Speaker 4: is to if you need a talk, it's texting, because
- 29:35Speaker 4: this is how I do it. Could you please call me?
- 29:38Speaker 4: Can you take a call? Because at the time you
- 29:40Speaker 4: may not be able to take a call, and I
- 29:42Speaker 4: do that a lot if I need to speak to someone,
- 29:44Speaker 4: I said, could you take a call? First of all,
- 29:46Speaker 4: I'm being Curtis, and I'm asking if they can put
- 29:49Speaker 4: time to the sides that we can communicate and they
- 29:52Speaker 4: know the subject, because you know, I am who I am.
- 29:56Speaker 4: But you are right, and I saw it coming like
- 29:58Speaker 4: a freight train because I head relationships. I have been
- 30:01Speaker 4: a small business person. I started that store in eighty
- 30:04Speaker 4: seven and a semi retired in twenty three. I'm doing
- 30:09Speaker 4: this as a hobby. As I told Fred, I'm kind
- 30:11Speaker 4: of a nonprofit. I just don't want to go backwards.
- 30:13Speaker 4: You know, I'm just hanging out. I didn't want to
- 30:16Speaker 4: go home. I didn't want to expire, So I'm gonna
- 30:19Speaker 4: take it as serious as I did January fifteenth, nineteen
- 30:22Speaker 4: eighty seven, as they opened up. I mean, if if
- 30:26Speaker 4: you need something addressed and if I can help you,
- 30:29Speaker 4: I'm going to try to do so. And I expect
- 30:33Speaker 4: it the other way around, because I give it. Now.
- 30:37Speaker 4: If I was one sighted and I didn't give, if
- 30:39Speaker 4: I blew people off, then I could understand getting it back.
- 30:43Speaker 4: But unless than my cell phone's down or bottom of
- 30:46Speaker 4: the Canal river, you know, and I can't read the
- 30:48Speaker 4: text which Mike Wewndall put out there the other day.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Mike's a great guy. He's lou Wendell s. He dropped
- 30:54Speaker 4: his phone in the river, and he had he went
- 30:56Speaker 4: on Facebook and said, hey, I dropped my phone in
- 31:00Speaker 4: the river, so all yousally have tried to contact me.
- 31:03Speaker 4: I'm in the bottom of the canal. Oh my goodness,
- 31:06Speaker 4: wise move. You know. I'm not saying that never happened
- 31:10Speaker 4: to me, because it happened to me one time. You know,
- 31:12Speaker 4: I'm a boater. I live on the Canal River and
- 31:14Speaker 4: phones do.
- 31:15Speaker 5: And gravity take some happen, things fall down.
- 31:17Speaker 4: These phones can survive a lot more than the old phone.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Them old ones was just I mean, it was.
- 31:22Speaker 5: Yeah, if you got it out of the water quick enough,
- 31:23Speaker 5: you could priace save it.
- 31:24Speaker 4: Yeah, but the canal is big river. But that's just
- 31:33Speaker 4: how I built it, and I expected on the return
- 31:35Speaker 4: because I give it, and i'll I'll be the last
- 31:39Speaker 4: man on this side of the fence, because that's just
- 31:41Speaker 4: the way that it's. It's in. It's in me. It's
- 31:45Speaker 4: it's a communication skill and it might be the only
- 31:48Speaker 4: skill I have. So I'm gonna, you know, I'm gonna
- 31:50Speaker 4: keep it sharp. And I just do not know any
- 31:53Speaker 4: other way of doing it that other than you know,
- 31:57Speaker 4: communicating by talking, and you know you do text normally
- 32:00Speaker 4: starts out that way. It's just beyond me. How people
- 32:05Speaker 4: gets from that keyboard to sell their merchandise and going
- 32:09Speaker 4: to have people to come to their house gathering information
- 32:12Speaker 4: that is going to be put in some type of
- 32:15Speaker 4: web based memory system that could be hacked, and the
- 32:18Speaker 4: take is going to have their social security numbers. It's
- 32:21Speaker 4: going to have so much information they're very, very vulnerable.
- 32:26Speaker 4: I went to the old system when when the Stevens
- 32:28Speaker 4: bought my store, they bought the computer systems. All I'm
- 32:31Speaker 4: back to manual man Yell's. We used to call it
- 32:34Speaker 4: a piece of paper and a pencil. It goes in
- 32:36Speaker 4: a locked file cabinet. It's for me and my eyes only.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Unlessen somebody throws a brick through the window, grabs the file,
- 32:45Speaker 4: gab it and drags it out of there and wants
- 32:47Speaker 4: to go through all those files. You're not going to
- 32:50Speaker 4: get to me.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Well, you know, the great thing is you're in a
- 32:52Speaker 3: position where you can run your business exactly the way
- 32:54Speaker 3: you want to. And so you're able to do that
- 32:56Speaker 3: exactly the way you want to and to have everything
- 32:58Speaker 3: when print out. I mean that has to be empowered. Frankly,
- 33:00Speaker 3: I mean it allows you to create that environment exactly
- 33:04Speaker 3: the way you want to and you don't have to
- 33:05Speaker 3: deal with the shenanigans if you don't want to.
- 33:07Speaker 4: When I'm talking one on one with someone, they know
- 33:10Speaker 4: that there is no one behind the curtain. You know,
- 33:14Speaker 4: this is this is the value. I drove way out Milton,
- 33:20Speaker 4: out some road. Met a guy that I bought a
- 33:22Speaker 4: truck from. I guess two or three years ago. I
- 33:24Speaker 4: kind of remember him, maybe barely. He had another truck
- 33:28Speaker 4: for sale. We sit here and talk for a long time,
- 33:32Speaker 4: and we got within five hundred dollars. I said, well,
- 33:35Speaker 4: look I'm trying to be fair with you, but this
- 33:38Speaker 4: is this, this is my valuation the vehicle, and if
- 33:41Speaker 4: you want to sell, you have my cell phone number.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Call me. I'll come back out roll by check, we'll
- 33:46Speaker 4: get the vehicle. Never heard from him. Now he may
- 33:48Speaker 4: got his other five hundred dollars, and good for him.
- 33:50Speaker 4: I understand that I bought it. If I run into
- 33:53Speaker 4: him to mark Abella's almost say hey, how you been
- 33:55Speaker 4: and talk to him. I'm not mad. But we communicated.
- 33:59Speaker 4: We didn't we leave each other, and we didn't ghost
- 34:02Speaker 4: each other. We sit there and talked, and I gave
- 34:05Speaker 4: him a suggestion. I said, if you want my offer,
- 34:09Speaker 4: just call me. Well, evidently he he may a not
- 34:12Speaker 4: sold it. Matter of fact, I asked the person referred
- 34:15Speaker 4: him to me if he sold it, and he said,
- 34:17Speaker 4: I don't think so. So I don't know. But I'm
- 34:20Speaker 4: not mad. I'm not upset. I mean, this is part
- 34:23Speaker 4: of doing business. Because there was a good conversation and
- 34:27Speaker 4: it was a sharing evaluations. It just wasn't the same,
- 34:31Speaker 4: and that happens, but you can't it's going back to
- 34:35Speaker 4: the old tractor implement. It was more than a price.
- 34:39Speaker 4: It was a service. And when when Darren took his
- 34:43Speaker 4: time attractor pros. That is the last set off I
- 34:45Speaker 4: want to give. They did a wonderful job, did everything
- 34:48Speaker 4: and was so informative, so informative because I learned things
- 34:53Speaker 4: about brush hogs that I thought I knew that I
- 34:55Speaker 4: didn't know. And there's these things called slip clutches. The
- 34:59Speaker 4: old ones I had bolts, and if you hit a stump,
- 35:02Speaker 4: it sheared that pin that bolt, and so you had
- 35:05Speaker 4: to go get a new bolt. Well, they got these
- 35:06Speaker 4: slip clutches in them. Now that keeps you from Hampton
- 35:09Speaker 4: climb off your tractor. Go get a bolt, a sheer
- 35:11Speaker 4: bolt or sheer pin, whatever you're gonna call it. I mean,
- 35:14Speaker 4: I didn't know that. I was old school, right, so
- 35:17Speaker 4: you know, but now I'm no expert. I only heard
- 35:19Speaker 4: what he said and I tried to retain most of it,
- 35:22Speaker 4: but it was uh and it wasn't. Once again, it
- 35:25Speaker 4: wasn't the selling factor of it as the information. The
- 35:28Speaker 4: sale came after, you know, I just said how much
- 35:31Speaker 4: is it? And an hour or later I took dare
- 35:34Speaker 4: in a check and a day later my younger brother
- 35:36Speaker 4: brought the trailer and picked it up. And I'm brushogging.
- 35:41Speaker 3: It really is something when you go that extra step
- 35:43Speaker 3: and when you're able to do that and you've really
- 35:45Speaker 3: carved out to this ability for you to be able
- 35:47Speaker 3: to to help people as you see fit and also
- 35:50Speaker 3: to fit situations that you know that that are resolvable,
- 35:53Speaker 3: you know, because some situations just aren't resolvable. And when
- 35:56Speaker 3: you're employed the way Larry Dawson's Auto seals were some
- 35:58Speaker 3: of those, you have to go through a process before
- 36:00Speaker 3: you could arrive to the conclusion that it's unresolvable, and
- 36:04Speaker 3: you know you have to do what you have to do,
- 36:05Speaker 3: but it might spin your wheel a little bit. You
- 36:07Speaker 3: can now be just like, hey man, that's unresolvable. You
- 36:08Speaker 3: don't have to go through that process, which is kind
- 36:10Speaker 3: of nice.
- 36:11Speaker 4: That's true. And when I get to an impass I'll
- 36:14Speaker 4: simply politely walk away and said, what we're We're not
- 36:18Speaker 4: going to be able to get together. I'm not going
- 36:19Speaker 4: to ghost you. You know, I'm not gonna tell you
- 36:21Speaker 4: something then never get back or you never take your call.
- 36:25Speaker 4: But it's your evaluation, my evaluation. We are too far apart,
- 36:29Speaker 4: right and I'm not saying you're wrong. Maybe I'm wrong.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Let me just take for argument sake, I am wrong.
- 36:35Speaker 4: See if you can go get that. But if by
- 36:38Speaker 4: chance you find that maybe you are too far, you
- 36:41Speaker 4: can come back. The door's never closed, you know, it's
- 36:45Speaker 4: just for right now, we're not going to continue on.
- 36:47Speaker 5: Yeah, that's good information.
- 36:48Speaker 3: As always with Larry Dawson from larr Dawson's autos were
- 36:50Speaker 3: from We Buy Cars.
- 36:51Speaker 5: Larry Dawston from We Buy Cars is.
- 36:53Speaker 3: A be wrapping up the conversation right now and Larry
- 36:56Speaker 3: will be back here on the second Wednesday of July.
- 36:59Speaker 5: Which will be next my Larry, thank you so much
- 37:01Speaker 5: for your time this morning. Appreciate it. As always.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Dave Allen with five eighty Lives up next with a
- 37:04Speaker 3: special show about the passing of Doug scaff You want
- 37:07Speaker 3: to tune in for that.
- 37:07Speaker 5: That's coming up next on five ADWC. Just the Voice
- 37:09Speaker 5: of Charles
