- 0:26Amber Kuhn: Hello TPR nation. This is Amber Kuhn. Thank you
- 0:29for joining me on today's Follow up Friday, where I'll be
- 0:33recapping this week's episode highlights and action items. On
- 0:36Monday, Matt was joined by Aaron Palmer, an advisor from
- 0:39Washington to talk about value adds, as well as a personal
- 0:43experience that changed his life. Matt And Aaron pointed out
- 0:46that advisors think value adds need to be super elaborate. We
- 0:50have so many available options that are fundamentals and they
- 0:53make a big difference for your clients. Aaron said during his
- 0:57review this year, he did an unclaimed property search for
- 1:00every client by going to unclaimed.org going to their
- 1:03state, and then entering the client's name, their spouse and
- 1:07their children's names to find as much property as we could to
- 1:10help them claim it. He's completely virtual, and he'd do
- 1:14this while meeting with his clients and doing a screen
- 1:17share. From there, he'd either help the clients claim it right
- 1:20there, or follow up with a letter on this what to do next
- 1:24and what they could expect. Aaron had a client who ended up
- 1:27finding about $10,000 from an old IRA. But for most clients,
- 1:31this is typically a smaller amount, but it only takes a few
- 1:34minutes, and it demonstrates to clients that you're thinking
- 1:38about more than just money that you manage, and they feel like
- 1:41they're being taken care of. This is a value add that any
- 1:45advisor could do. Aaron then shared his personal story of how
- 1:48he's been sober for 12 years after an experience he had on
- 1:52the trip, which he said changed his life. During the trip, he
- 1:55met a mother and her son who was battling cancer, who were on
- 1:59vacation because of a Wish granted by the Make a Wish
- 2:02Foundation. Aaron said that conversation inspired him to
- 2:05change his life through this, and with a presentation he did
- 2:09for the foundation, he shared how by making that wish for that
- 2:12little boy, it went further than anyone could have imagined, and
- 2:16how it saved his own life. Matt and Aaron spent some time
- 2:19talking about addiction in the industry, whether it's
- 2:22alcoholism or having addiction to working, and the impact it
- 2:26has for Aaron and with the experience he went through, he
- 2:29realized that after getting sober, his life truly took off.
- 2:33He pointed out that so many people struggle with this by
- 2:36keeping up with the good habits that he's learned. He's been
- 2:39able to stay sober for Aaron to be able to open up about his
- 2:43struggles and his experience. He said it was through both time
- 2:46and his faith that he got the confidence to do this and share
- 2:50it with so many people. Matt And Aaron pointed out that with this
- 2:54or any other thing in your life, you don't always need to
- 2:57reinvent the path, whether that's trying to get server or
- 3:00in your business, once you find someone doing something that's
- 3:04working, you need to follow that path. Aaron then went into how
- 3:08he runs his practice surge, how he did a fee increase, and how
- 3:11he's so intentional with his schedule, he Matt dug a little
- 3:15deeper into working with his team and what they focus on year
- 3:18to year, whether it's updating beneficiaries or going through
- 3:22who they haven't heard from in a while. Another value add he
- 3:25mentioned is printing off a detailed balance sheet that
- 3:29lists all accounts, mailing that to the client with instructions
- 3:32to then tuck that into their will. He also pointed out how
- 3:36anything he sends to his clients is in a bright orange envelope.
- 3:39He makes his clients aware of this so they know that when they
- 3:43get that it's something important. Things like these are
- 3:46simple, but they work and they make a difference. Let's get
- 3:50into action items. Consider raising your fees or
- 3:53implementing search if you haven't yet, and look at simple
- 3:56value adds that you can do, such as unclaimed property or the
- 4:00network statement, and giving clients instructions for them to
- 4:03tuck that into their well, Aaron recommends reading the book,
- 4:07who, not how, and if you feel an inkling of procrastination,
- 4:10that's something you need to delegate. On Thursday, Jamie was
- 4:14talking about the second stage of an advisor's career path,
- 4:17freedom. Now if you missed last week's episode, Jamie was
- 4:21talking about the growth stage. So this week, she wanted to talk
- 4:24about what happens when you've grown your practice and you
- 4:28either get to a point where you're complacent or you're
- 4:31burnt out, and what does that mean for you, your family and
- 4:34your clients? That's when you enter that freedom stage. Once
- 4:38you get to this point, you can start being discerning about
- 4:41your clients. You don't have to take everyone who walks in. So
- 4:45in Jamie's office, when they're going through their client list,
- 4:49they have a test for whether the advisor or the team is dreading
- 4:52meeting with a particular client. And this isn't just
- 4:55because you're about to have a hard conversation. It's that
- 4:59person every time that is taking up all your mental energy, even
- 5:03before you meet with them, instead of you focusing on the
- 5:06majority of the people who you want to meet with, they become
- 5:09your problem client. And Jamie said, You're setting yourself up
- 5:13for regulatory failure. Your problem client is going to be a
- 5:17red flag and send in a complaint. This is the client
- 5:20you need to graduate. Another thing that comes up when you're
- 5:23transitioning into the freedom stage is advisors struggling
- 5:27with that shopkeeper mentality, meaning you assume that things
- 5:30aren't or can't happen without your involvement. Advisors end
- 5:34up with guilt about nothing in the office, but with freedom,
- 5:37it's all about making sure you have documented systems,
- 5:41policies and processes in place. Jamie said that's a stepping
- 5:44stone between growth and freedom. Now, if you don't have
- 5:47these in place, you need to take everything you know or know how
- 5:51to do and document it so someone else can handle this. And if you
- 5:55need a place to start, she recommended starting with a
- 5:58communication policy, because you don't want your team looking
- 6:02at you as the easy button. And if you're dealing with the guilt
- 6:05physically in the office, Jamie said you can still have check in
- 6:09meetings. You can still see the call volume coming in. You can
- 6:13still have a pulse on what's happening when you're out of the
- 6:16office and when things come up. Take the time to do a guided
- 6:20discovery with your team to see if you're dealing with a process
- 6:23problem or a people problem. Make sure that everyone
- 6:26understands that they're part of everything that's happening in
- 6:30your practice. This is how you get to the freedom level,
- 6:33because at this point you need to be focusing on financial
- 6:37plans, business development, or meeting with clients, not just
- 6:40him the office. Jamie wrapped up by talking about the need to
- 6:44take action, and with the freedom stage, you'll never get
- 6:47to that point, let alone the enterprise stage if you aren't
- 6:51taking action. That wraps up this week's recap. So TPR
