- 0:00Dave Hamilton: Business Brain, episode 781 for Casual Friday, August 21st, Internet Self-Care Day, 2026.
- 0:10Shannon Jean: Internet self-care, that's interesting.
- 0:12Dave Hamilton: Well, you know, like making sure you're...
- 0:15Shannon Jean: Not doom-scrolling too much.
- 0:17Dave Hamilton: Oh, that could be... I took it on the other way.
- 0:21Dave Hamilton: Like, well, make sure your computer security is good. Yeah. But I think you're
- 0:26Dave Hamilton: probably spot on with this.
- 0:29Shannon Jean: Don't engage with trolls. Don't do scroll all night. I would think that.
- 0:33Dave Hamilton: No, I think you're right. I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's yeah,
- 0:36Dave Hamilton: yeah, yeah. I like that. That's good.
- 0:38Shannon Jean: Easy, easy, easy to do that.
- 0:39Dave Hamilton: Greetings, folks. Welcome to Business Brain. We are the show that I don't think
- 0:44Dave Hamilton: I did this in the last episode. I don't care anymore.
- 0:48Dave Hamilton: But we are the show where we take some ideas, we crunch them,
- 0:51Dave Hamilton: we dissect them, we use them to tune our business brains each and every time we get together.
- 0:56Dave Hamilton: Our sponsors include KeeperSecurity.com slash brain, where you can go get 60%
- 1:04Dave Hamilton: off personal and family plans of this great password manager.
- 1:08Dave Hamilton: And also Somnipods, three sleep earbuds from Fitnexa, where you can go to go.fitnexa.com
- 1:15Dave Hamilton: slash brain and automatically get $10 off. So we'll talk more about those in
- 1:19Dave Hamilton: a little bit. For now, here in Durham, New Hampshire, I'm Dave Hamilton.
- 1:23Shannon Jean: And I'm Shannon Jean here in Northern California. Yeah. And yeah,
- 1:27Shannon Jean: I think we did miss it. It's tough when we start talking about the day and then
- 1:31Shannon Jean: you get going and the topic
- 1:33Dave Hamilton: Rolled right in. It was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:36Shannon Jean: Yeah. That's okay. We don't have to do the same thing every time.
- 1:40Dave Hamilton: Um, I mean, in a sense, there are some things we have to do that we didn't.
- 1:43Dave Hamilton: And hopefully we don't get yelled at about it, but yeah, that's fine. Yeah. It's all good.
- 1:47Shannon Jean: Yeah. That's good.
- 1:50Dave Hamilton: Happy Friday to you, too, my friend. What have we got today?
- 1:54Shannon Jean: I want to talk about AI note-taking.
- 1:57Dave Hamilton: Okay.
- 1:57Shannon Jean: Because we've all been in those Zoom calls where it's like, boom,
- 2:01Shannon Jean: boom, boom. Here comes Fathom, and here comes Squirrel or whoever, and Firefly.
- 2:07Shannon Jean: Sometimes I go in those calls, and it's just me and all those AI note-takers.
- 2:10Dave Hamilton: I literally had a call the other day where it was me and Skylar.
- 2:15Dave Hamilton: She works for us at Backbeat. we were meeting with an agency rep and the reps note taker made it.
- 2:21Dave Hamilton: And 15 minutes later, we're like, well, I guess the, like our reps not going
- 2:26Dave Hamilton: to make it. Like, it's just going to, not going to work.
- 2:28Dave Hamilton: So yeah, we literally, we talked to the note taker. We were like, Hey.
- 2:32Shannon Jean: I had that too.
- 2:33Dave Hamilton: Yeah. Be careful in those moments that you don't wind up talking to your,
- 2:37Dave Hamilton: your teammates like randomly because you know, things are being recorded. Yes.
- 2:42Shannon Jean: Absolutely. Yeah. And I've come to the realization that it's,
- 2:49Shannon Jean: and I always mention it to people I'm talking, say, hey, I'm going to keep the
- 2:52Shannon Jean: transcript of this if that's okay.
- 2:54Shannon Jean: But on the localized transcription and AI agents, I'm liking those more right
- 3:03Shannon Jean: now. Things like Granola.
- 3:04Dave Hamilton: Yeah.
- 3:05Shannon Jean: And I'm using WhisperSync. I love, or WhisperFlow, sorry.
- 3:08Dave Hamilton: Okay, yeah.
- 3:09Shannon Jean: WhisperFlow is, I use it every single day. It's amazing. It's the most incredible
- 3:13Shannon Jean: text-to-speech app I've ever used.
- 3:16Dave Hamilton: Yep.
- 3:17Shannon Jean: Or speech-to-text, as I should say. And they've just rolled out note-taking.
- 3:25Shannon Jean: Yeah. And they're basically capturing your audio, right, from your localized
- 3:29Shannon Jean: machine. Just from your computer, sure. From your computer.
- 3:32Shannon Jean: And it's very... One thing I've really noticed, it's really good at the...
- 3:39Shannon Jean: The speaker recognition, knowing that, oh, it's Dave and Shannon,
- 3:43Shannon Jean: right? And then being able to pull that out. Yeah. And it's great.
- 3:47Shannon Jean: I love it. And if you're using Whisperflow, you definitely should check it out. I think you'll like it.
- 3:54Dave Hamilton: It does it...
- 3:57Dave Hamilton: It if like let's say there were there were three of us here so you and then me and then tim,
- 4:04Dave Hamilton: would it have any way of discerning that that there is a a third person a second
- 4:12Dave Hamilton: remote person that that like that it knows about.
- 4:16Shannon Jean: Yeah so what it does is it's doing a transcription sure right now like i have
- 4:21Shannon Jean: it doing it right now for the show i wanted to test it out yeah and then after
- 4:24Shannon Jean: when you're done it chews on it
- 4:28Shannon Jean: and it decides and says oh this is that person this is this person and you've
- 4:33Shannon Jean: identified so it's it's so far i've used it i think
- 4:38Shannon Jean: maybe three or four people in the call and it's identified each speaker okay
- 4:42Shannon Jean: great um and and i believe i have not done this yet you it
- 4:46Shannon Jean: you can go say oh this is dave yeah right go recognize that the whole time like
- 4:52Shannon Jean: some of the other ones but uh i like the localized part of it i don't normally
- 4:56Shannon Jean: need the video what i what i use and often
- 5:00Shannon Jean: you know benefit greatly from is having the transcript so i can you know parse
- 5:04Shannon Jean: through the data it's incredible
- 5:06Dave Hamilton: Dude that the transcript one of my favorite things to do we were just talking
- 5:10Dave Hamilton: on one of my calls i was on my business partner and we started,
- 5:14Dave Hamilton: talking about an idea that we had to enhance the website that we that we have right right and And,
- 5:22Dave Hamilton: I started taking notes and like that part, I think is valuable.
- 5:26Dave Hamilton: The things that highlight to me, like, all right, we're going to implement.
- 5:29Dave Hamilton: We were, we essentially started talking about a new software feature.
- 5:32Dave Hamilton: It happens to do with a website, but it really doesn't matter.
- 5:34Dave Hamilton: You know, it's just, we were talking about a software feature.
- 5:37Dave Hamilton: And so I took my own little notes knowing full well that.
- 5:41Dave Hamilton: I had a recording audio recording and not a recording a transcription being generated in real time,
- 5:49Dave Hamilton: that i at the end of it i took my notes,
- 5:53Dave Hamilton: and fed that into the llm and then i,
- 5:58Dave Hamilton: just to make life easier and to save on like token costs i went into the transcript
- 6:03Dave Hamilton: and cut out the parts that didn't have anything to do with this feature because
- 6:06Dave Hamilton: we talked for like an hour and a half and maybe only 20 minutes of it was this feature right so,
- 6:11Dave Hamilton: i could have given it all of it and said you know go and really that's all i
- 6:15Dave Hamilton: fed it at first i said we started talking about a new feature to do
- 6:20Dave Hamilton: x and i gave a like half a sentence description of it here are my notes from
- 6:25Dave Hamilton: the call here are the transcript from it which i uploaded as a file,
- 6:30Dave Hamilton: i said go through this and help me spec out you're making a lot of noise over
- 6:35Dave Hamilton: there so sorry i'm just telling you it's all no i needed to acknowledge it for
- 6:38Dave Hamilton: the people who are listening it's all fine sorry about that it's okay i got you and so um.
- 6:44Dave Hamilton: And and i said ask me questions the goal of this chat is going to be to create
- 6:48Dave Hamilton: a prompt to start a claude code session that will develop this feature and we
- 6:55Dave Hamilton: you know went it and it did it was like okay and give me a second and,
- 6:59Dave Hamilton: you know it came back and it was like hey all right uh i I think what you're developing is this.
- 7:03Dave Hamilton: I have these questions for you about it. And it was like, all right,
- 7:06Dave Hamilton: great. I'm ready to build the plan. Here's the plan. Here you go.
- 7:10Dave Hamilton: And like, that can be really valuable. It is really valuable.
- 7:14Shannon Jean: I totally agree. It is really valuable. Yeah. I agree.
- 7:17Shannon Jean: And I think that whenever I have calls with folks, I always end and I say,
- 7:23Shannon Jean: hey, I'm going to send you the transcript. Make sure you put it in whatever,
- 7:27Shannon Jean: you know, whatever AI you're using.
- 7:29Shannon Jean: And, you know, to pull out the valuable parts for you, the summary,
- 7:35Shannon Jean: the action items, all that kind of stuff. It's huge.
- 7:38Dave Hamilton: Now, Granola is, they were a sponsor for a little while. They aren't currently.
- 7:44Dave Hamilton: But one thing I really liked about Granola was the way that it would do the
- 7:48Dave Hamilton: transcript, but then also do a summary of the meeting at the end.
- 7:52Dave Hamilton: Does the Whisperflow note taker do the same thing? It does.
- 7:55Shannon Jean: Yes, it does. Okay, great. Yeah, gives you a summary, which I love.
- 7:58Shannon Jean: I think it's great. But I just think the localized version of those are just
- 8:06Shannon Jean: much, I think it's just a cleaner way to do it versus having this thing in your screen.
- 8:12Dave Hamilton: That logs in.
- 8:13Shannon Jean: Yeah, that logs into your calls.
- 8:16Dave Hamilton: Stay tuned for next week because I have another one to share.
- 8:22Dave Hamilton: Perfect. Yeah, but it does things a little differently and I have some more stuff.
- 8:27Dave Hamilton: Nice. Yeah, we'll either do it next week or we might do it in a minute here
- 8:32Dave Hamilton: because maybe that's a better time to do it.
- 8:35Dave Hamilton: I think it is, in fact. So we will do it today. In fact, I'm calling an audible. But...
- 8:41Dave Hamilton: Not quite yet, because the next thing that we want to do is tell you about our sponsors.
- 8:48Dave Hamilton: We entrepreneurs have a specific problem at bedtime, right? The business doesn't clock out when we do.
- 8:56Dave Hamilton: So recently, and actually just last night, I tested out Somnipods 3 from our sponsor Fitnexa.
- 9:03Dave Hamilton: These are sleep earbuds, right? And the thing that matters most is that they're
- 9:08Dave Hamilton: flat enough so that I can lie directly on them. I'm a side sleeper.
- 9:13Dave Hamilton: And for me, these stay comfortable with my head on the pillow.
- 9:17Dave Hamilton: I know that that's table stakes for a sleep earbud.
- 9:20Dave Hamilton: And it's important for me to mention that they hit this.
- 9:23Dave Hamilton: But the real prize is that the companion app that comes along with it,
- 9:26Dave Hamilton: the Fitnexa app, is awesome.
- 9:29Dave Hamilton: Genuinely good content, like lots of different options of different things.
- 9:32Dave Hamilton: They've even got some binaural stuff in there if you want to do that.
- 9:35Dave Hamilton: But, you know, nature sounds or different white noise, pink noise,
- 9:39Dave Hamilton: you know, all the different things right there.
- 9:41Dave Hamilton: And it's easy to get the sounds you want without fighting a menu at midnight.
- 9:46Dave Hamilton: They also filter out enough of the surrounding noise that I can actually wind down.
- 9:51Dave Hamilton: And here's the bonus I didn't expect. I'm a music nerd, as you know.
- 9:56Dave Hamilton: So I ran my usual earbud test playlist through these purely out of curiosity.
- 10:01Dave Hamilton: These are not like intended to be just music listening headphones.
- 10:04Dave Hamilton: But they sound great! And that's the Charmed Life, right? Protecting the eight
- 10:08Dave Hamilton: hours that make the other 16 work.
- 10:12Dave Hamilton: I can see myself using these on especially distracting days and also,
- 10:16Dave Hamilton: obviously, while I travel.
- 10:18Dave Hamilton: And you can too. Fitnexa is giving you, our listeners, $10 off of Somnipods 3.
- 10:24Dave Hamilton: Head to go.fitnexa.com slash brain, and the discount applies automatically.
- 10:30Dave Hamilton: You can also use code brain for $10 off. Go check it out. Go.fitnexa.com slash
- 10:36Dave Hamilton: brain, and code brain for $10 off either way.
- 10:39Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to Fitnexa and Somnipods 3 for sponsoring this episode.
- 10:44Dave Hamilton: And hey, quick question. Do you actually know how many of your passwords are
- 10:49Dave Hamilton: reused across your accounts right now?
- 10:51Dave Hamilton: I mean, we all know that in the early days, we would use the same password everywhere.
- 10:57Dave Hamilton: How many of those have you changed? Have you changed all of them? Right? I didn't.
- 11:01Dave Hamilton: And what won me over with our sponsor, Keeper, was the migration.
- 11:06Dave Hamilton: Importing everything out of my old password manager was shockingly painless,
- 11:11Dave Hamilton: which is not a sentence I expected to say.
- 11:13Dave Hamilton: And then their reused password detection just handed me a list.
- 11:19Dave Hamilton: Every duplicate right there.
- 11:21Dave Hamilton: Embarrassingly so in some ways, but easy to go fix.
- 11:25Dave Hamilton: One of mine had been in continuous service so long, it should be collecting
- 11:29Dave Hamilton: a pension. I'm glad somebody else isn't collecting a pension off of me because I didn't change it.
- 11:34Dave Hamilton: Keeper is a password manager that creates strong, unique passwords for all your
- 11:38Dave Hamilton: accounts, stores them securely in one place, and logs you in automatically across
- 11:43Dave Hamilton: all your devices, so you never have to remember, guess, or worry about getting
- 11:47Dave Hamilton: locked out of your accounts again.
- 11:49Dave Hamilton: Right now, Keeper's offering 60% off personal and family plans at KeeperSecurity.com slash brain.
- 11:55Dave Hamilton: This incredible offer is only available for you podcast listeners.
- 12:00Dave Hamilton: That's KeeperSecurity.com slash brain for 60% off personal and family plans.
- 12:06Dave Hamilton: And if you're running a team at work, check out Keeper's business plans.
- 12:10Dave Hamilton: Just make sure to use our link so they know that we sent you KeeperSecurity.com
- 12:14Dave Hamilton: slash brain and our thanks to Keeper for sponsoring this episode.
- 12:18Dave Hamilton: All right, so we were talking about your local AI note-taking agents.
- 12:24Shannon Jean: Yeah, and you were going to call an audible here.
- 12:26Dave Hamilton: I 100%. The new topic. Yeah, no, because I use Zoom.
- 12:30Dave Hamilton: I have a subscription to Zoom that we pay for here at Backend. And we use it.
- 12:34Dave Hamilton: Okay, well, you have perhaps one of the best AI note-taking agents.
- 12:40Dave Hamilton: Yes. Baked right into Zoom.
- 12:43Shannon Jean: And I use that too. Yeah, because it's kind of in the background,
- 12:46Shannon Jean: right? It can be. It doesn't come up in a...
- 12:48Dave Hamilton: I highly recommend you go in and turn on, there's a setting to have it start
- 12:56Dave Hamilton: that note-taking and the transcription, which then turns into the note-taking for every meeting.
- 13:02Dave Hamilton: Because I've been in a call and realized at the end that I didn't turn it on.
- 13:06Dave Hamilton: Oh, yeah. Absolutely turn it on. Just set the default so that it's on for everything.
- 13:11Dave Hamilton: And then at the end of the meeting it'll crunch and in the app and then also
- 13:16Dave Hamilton: in your email uh if you have it set that way you'll get a uh,
- 13:21Dave Hamilton: summary of the meeting and like the others it gives you your action items and you know,
- 13:27Dave Hamilton: a gen essentially an agenda a two a two did list like you know of your agenda
- 13:32Dave Hamilton: what you talked about and and then also any action items that you have or that
- 13:37Dave Hamilton: other people have, which is great.
- 13:39Dave Hamilton: And I always file those emails away just in case something happens to my zoom
- 13:42Dave Hamilton: database. At least I still have all of that stuff and it's wonderful.
- 13:46Dave Hamilton: But the thing that's really cool is that you can go back and query your meeting notes and.
- 13:55Dave Hamilton: With an LLM, with a chat interface. And so like we were talking to a potential
- 14:00Dave Hamilton: show that, or a show, it's not a potential show. It's a very real show that
- 14:03Dave Hamilton: we are potentially bringing on here at Backbeat, right? You know,
- 14:06Dave Hamilton: it's the preliminary conversations. We don't have them on board yet.
- 14:10Dave Hamilton: And, uh, and I was like, gosh, I, I, I know we talked about this,
- 14:14Dave Hamilton: but I can't remember. And I can't find in my notes, how many downloads per episode
- 14:18Dave Hamilton: this show does. And so I was like, wait a minute.
- 14:21Dave Hamilton: And I go in and I did this in their web interface, but I'm sure you can do it
- 14:24Dave Hamilton: in the, you know in the app interface i said how many downloads per episode
- 14:28Dave Hamilton: does this show have according to what we discussed in the meeting and it went,
- 14:33Dave Hamilton: it's based on the meeting discussion here are download numbers four you know
- 14:36Dave Hamilton: and it's like here's what happens in the first week here's what happens that's
- 14:38Dave Hamilton: awesome and here's who that who said which thing and why in the context of it
- 14:43Dave Hamilton: and i was like great do we have male female or age demographic data and it was
- 14:47Dave Hamilton: says nope that was not discussed in the meeting the conversation covered this and this and this,
- 14:52Dave Hamilton: but not that and you know and then obviously left it at that but you know it's
- 14:57Dave Hamilton: that we always talk about how valuable people.
- 15:02Dave Hamilton: Ai can be when it has your context
- 15:06Dave Hamilton: and this is that right you know you are literally feeding it the converse it
- 15:11Dave Hamilton: already has you're not feeding it you're feeding it the conversation in real
- 15:15Dave Hamilton: time and it's keeping it and then you can go back and query it which after a 90 minute meeting,
- 15:21Dave Hamilton: you know it's big it's even just reading through the summary is is you know,
- 15:26Dave Hamilton: time consuming i don't want to say it's a waste of time but it's time consuming
- 15:29Dave Hamilton: way better if you remember talking about something just ask zoom and it'll tell you yeah yeah.
- 15:34Shannon Jean: So are you downloading the transcript and then putting it in whatever llm you're using
- 15:39Dave Hamilton: No that's what i'm saying zoom does this automatically you already have this
- 15:44Dave Hamilton: if you're using zoom this is already done if you've had it do
- 15:49Dave Hamilton: the transcript of a meeting it already has this for you you can go back and query it right now,
- 15:55Dave Hamilton: that's cool it is And that, I think, is,
- 15:59Dave Hamilton: one of the things that levels Zoom up above these others.
- 16:02Dave Hamilton: And, you know, the reality is this is where...
- 16:07Dave Hamilton: The whole local versus, you know, cloud model, LLM. Yeah.
- 16:13Dave Hamilton: And actually, I guess a local model could probably do some version of this because
- 16:18Dave Hamilton: you have the data locally.
- 16:19Dave Hamilton: But, you know, they will hit limits very, very quickly in terms of the amount
- 16:25Dave Hamilton: of context they can hold.
- 16:27Dave Hamilton: Yeah, makes sense. Because you don't have the hardware resources to do that
- 16:33Dave Hamilton: on your computer, right? For sure. Yeah, that's the...
- 16:36Shannon Jean: No, that's a great tip. I haven't done it. I've done it where I've grabbed the
- 16:41Shannon Jean: transcript and threw it in Claude or chat GPT and queried it,
- 16:44Shannon Jean: but I haven't used there. So I'm definitely going to do that.
- 16:46Dave Hamilton: It's just right there. And this was one of those things where it was like,
- 16:49Dave Hamilton: oh man, like I'm going to look like, you know, I'm going to have egg on my face
- 16:53Dave Hamilton: if I have to go back to these people and ask them a question that we already
- 16:57Dave Hamilton: discussed and I didn't take notes on.
- 17:00Dave Hamilton: And the reality is I don't want to take notes while I'm having meetings,
- 17:04Dave Hamilton: like unless there's something that we're discussing that I am driven to write down.
- 17:09Dave Hamilton: Like if it's like a natural thing, then I'll do it. Fine.
- 17:12Dave Hamilton: But I don't want to be obligated to take notes during a meeting. I want to know.
- 17:17Dave Hamilton: I want to be my best present self and have a conversation.
- 17:21Shannon Jean: And yeah, and I just I'm no good at paper.
- 17:24Dave Hamilton: So I never take notes on paper. No, no, no. Oh, Shannon.
- 17:28Dave Hamilton: No, no, no. this is like in in the notes app or sometimes yeah yeah but that's the problem is like,
- 17:33Dave Hamilton: i know on my computer i have a an email open with it's just a draft email from
- 17:39Dave Hamilton: notes from the meeting that i had just before we did this call,
- 17:42Dave Hamilton: and it's like i gotta remember to go and like put that somewhere but yes it
- 17:47Dave Hamilton: turns out i also have i was a zoom meeting and so i already have it it's like it's good yeah i.
- 17:52Shannon Jean: Wonder if i mean if you i'm not huge i mean i've used it but i i don't it's not my
- 17:58Shannon Jean: Not what I choose to use all the time or my first go-to when I think of connecting
- 18:03Shannon Jean: and meetings is Google Meet.
- 18:05Shannon Jean: Yeah. I'm curious. They must have a similar thing.
- 18:08Dave Hamilton: I think they do. I hate Google Meet.
- 18:10Shannon Jean: Yeah, I'm not a big fan of it either. If you're a Google Meet person,
- 18:14Shannon Jean: send us an email, feedback at businessbrain.show, and let us know if they have
- 18:19Shannon Jean: this feature like that so we can talk about it.
- 18:21Dave Hamilton: Yep.
- 18:21Shannon Jean: Love it. Be good.
- 18:22Dave Hamilton: Love it.
- 18:23Shannon Jean: Yeah.
- 18:23Dave Hamilton: All right. What is our big takeaway from this week's Friday AI, my friend?
- 18:30Shannon Jean: I think the big takeaway is to analyze your transcripts, note-taking,
- 18:38Shannon Jean: whatever it is. And, you know, that stuff is gold, right? It's your data.
- 18:44Shannon Jean: And I think it also leads us into a topic to talk about next week is what happens
- 18:50Shannon Jean: if you put your data into an LLM and then you get it back? and now it's watermarked.
- 18:54Shannon Jean: So I think it'd be an interesting discussion to have on next Friday. Yeah.
- 18:59Dave Hamilton: Okay, that's fine. I think this watermarking conversation is candidly a waste
- 19:05Dave Hamilton: of time and therefore we will have it one more time.
- 19:08Shannon Jean: Yeah, one more time.
- 19:09Dave Hamilton: That's a good idea. That's good. But yeah, create and analyze your meeting transcripts.
- 19:14Dave Hamilton: That's what I'm putting as the big takeaway. And then what we will do is that
- 19:17Dave Hamilton: gets crunched down and expanded into our business blueprints,
- 19:22Dave Hamilton: which is like a business plan based on that topic and how you can apply it to your business.
- 19:27Dave Hamilton: So make sure to visit businessbrain.show slash blueprints so that you can get
- 19:33Dave Hamilton: your copy of that and keep living the charmed life a little bit easily,
- 19:38Dave Hamilton: a little bit more easily each week. I'll see you next week.
- 19:41Shannon Jean: See ya.
