- 1:00:00Welcome back to the podcast, everybody.
- 1:00:02Thank you for joining us.
- 1:00:03Today, we're gonna be
- 1:00:04diving deeper into the undertow.
- 1:00:06Last episode, we unveiled the undertow
- 1:00:08with Serena and Amanda, my co-host.
- 1:00:10And today we're gonna be diving deeper
- 1:00:12by talking about the wave maker
- 1:00:14and what we define as a wave maker.
- 1:00:16Maybe you are either a wave maker now
- 1:00:18or the next wave maker.
- 1:00:20We're gonna be talking
- 1:00:21about why it's important
- 1:00:22for wave makers to be supported,
- 1:00:24why it's important for them
- 1:00:25to be a part of the undertow,
- 1:00:26and why we're gonna be introducing to you
- 1:00:28some amazing people
- 1:00:29over the next little while
- 1:00:30to talk about ocean conservation.
- 1:00:33And it's really interesting
- 1:00:35because each and every one
- 1:00:36of us, Serena, Amanda, myself,
- 1:00:38we are wave makers in and of itself,
- 1:00:40and we are getting together
- 1:00:41to support other wave makers.
- 1:00:43That's what we focus on today,
- 1:00:44why it's important for
- 1:00:45them to be supported,
- 1:00:46why it's important for
- 1:00:47them to have a community
- 1:00:49like the undertow, and I
- 1:00:50can't wait to talk about it.
- 1:00:51So we're gonna reflect on our progress
- 1:00:53around the undertow and the wave maker,
- 1:00:55share a few behind the scenes insights,
- 1:00:57and of course, that'll
- 1:00:58give you a little sneak peek
- 1:00:59into how we're shaping
- 1:01:00this movement together.
- 1:01:03So let's get started on this episode
- 1:01:04of the "How to
- 1:01:04Protect the Ocean" podcast.
- 1:01:06Let's start the show.
- 1:01:10Hey everybody, welcome back
- 1:01:10to another exciting episode
- 1:01:12of the "How to
- 1:01:12Protect the Ocean" podcast.
- 1:01:13I'm your host, Andrew Lewin,
- 1:01:14and this is the
- 1:01:15podcast where you find out
- 1:01:16what's happening with the ocean,
- 1:01:17how you can speak up for the ocean,
- 1:01:18what you can do to live for a better
- 1:01:20ocean by taking action.
- 1:01:22Now on today's episode, like I mentioned,
- 1:01:24we are going to be
- 1:01:24talking more specifically
- 1:01:26about the undertow's wave
- 1:01:28maker, what a wave maker is,
- 1:01:30how you can become one
- 1:01:31unless you're already one,
- 1:01:32and how we are going
- 1:01:33to be supporting them
- 1:01:34through the undertow.
- 1:01:36I've been doing this
- 1:01:37podcast for about 10 years now.
- 1:01:38I'm coming up on 10 years this month,
- 1:01:40and it is something that I've seen a
- 1:01:43while, the wave maker.
- 1:01:45I haven't categorized
- 1:01:46them as wave makers,
- 1:01:46but I've seen these people who
- 1:01:48independently start projects,
- 1:01:49start projects like beach
- 1:01:50cleanups on a regular basis
- 1:01:52or a hashtag on the
- 1:01:53internet that goes viral
- 1:01:55or starts to pick up a lot of steam,
- 1:01:57starts a podcast or is a content creator
- 1:02:01or does something with a
- 1:02:02project that's above and beyond
- 1:02:04and maybe in the outer part
- 1:02:06of what your traditional marine
- 1:02:07conservationist could be.
- 1:02:08So that could be someone who's working
- 1:02:10for a nonprofit organization
- 1:02:12or someone who's working in government.
- 1:02:14But these are the people
- 1:02:15who kind of step outside
- 1:02:16the boundaries.
- 1:02:17These are side projects
- 1:02:18that become a full-time project
- 1:02:20or as somebody who's just
- 1:02:21doing something so incredible,
- 1:02:23it doesn't really fit within the confines
- 1:02:25of what we consider a marine biologist,
- 1:02:27marine conservationist, someone who does
- 1:02:29mindfulness with the oceans,
- 1:02:31or there's a number of
- 1:02:32business with the ocean,
- 1:02:33there's a number of different ways you
- 1:02:34can do stuff with marine conservation,
- 1:02:36but not everybody's
- 1:02:38supported the same way.
- 1:02:39And so today we're going to be diving
- 1:02:40into what a wave maker is
- 1:02:42and why did he help basically is what
- 1:02:44we're really going to be talking about.
- 1:02:46So I'm joined again by Amanda and Serena,
- 1:02:49my co-founders here at the undertow for
- 1:02:51this second episode.
- 1:02:52I can't wait for you to
- 1:02:53listen about the wave maker
- 1:02:55and I'd love to hear your feedback.
- 1:02:56So here is the interview
- 1:02:57with myself, Serena and Amanda,
- 1:02:59enjoy and I'll talk to you after.
- 1:03:01Hey Amanda, Hey Serena, welcome back to
- 1:03:04the how to protect the ocean podcast.
- 1:03:05Are you ready to talk about the undertow?
- 1:03:08We are always.
- 1:03:10Oh, wonderful.
- 1:03:11Like this is the second
- 1:03:12episode of our undertow series.
- 1:03:15This is an introduction
- 1:03:16to what the undertow is.
- 1:03:17We talked a lot about
- 1:03:18it in the last episode,
- 1:03:19but we're going to talk a
- 1:03:20little bit about like today,
- 1:03:22about the wave maker and what a wave
- 1:03:24maker is and what our
- 1:03:25community is supposed to build.
- 1:03:27So I'm looking forward to
- 1:03:28getting into all of this.
- 1:03:30But before we do, I know we just did it
- 1:03:31over the last episode,
- 1:03:32but why don't we remind each other or
- 1:03:34remind our audience who
- 1:03:36we are and what we do.
- 1:03:37So let's start with Amanda.
- 1:03:38Why don't you just remind the audience
- 1:03:39who you are and what you do.
- 1:03:42I'm so excited to have made some progress
- 1:03:45since our last episode.
- 1:03:47I'm Amanda Horn.
- 1:03:49I am a Canadian ocean advocate.
- 1:03:52I am a scuba diver.
- 1:03:53I'm a free diver and
- 1:03:55an ocean entrepreneur.
- 1:03:56And I am just so excited to be building
- 1:04:00this with you guys and just
- 1:04:02creating a place for everyone.
- 1:04:03And anyone who's been trying to navigate
- 1:04:05their pathway into
- 1:04:07taking action for the ocean.
- 1:04:08That's why we have the undertow.
- 1:04:11Awesome.
- 1:04:11Awesome.
- 1:04:12And Serena, how about yourself?
- 1:04:13I am Serena Gwen.
- 1:04:14I am also an ocean advocate scuba diver.
- 1:04:18New or a scuba diver though, then I'll
- 1:04:19say that Amanda, a free diver.
- 1:04:23And actually more recently now also a an
- 1:04:26ocean children's book author.
- 1:04:29Yes, very exciting.
- 1:04:31And I've been doing a strategy consulting
- 1:04:35on ocean innovation,
- 1:04:38how to build your strategies to
- 1:04:39incorporate or ocean
- 1:04:41solutions into your businesses.
- 1:04:43So this is just a part of the journey,
- 1:04:47but such a critical one that I've seen
- 1:04:49over the last 10 years or
- 1:04:51so in the innovation sector.
- 1:04:53So I'm excited to kind of
- 1:04:54bring all my worlds together.
- 1:04:57Absolutely.
- 1:04:57And it's so fun to be able to work with
- 1:04:59with both of you over the
- 1:05:00last almost last year, really,
- 1:05:02to be able to bring the undertow to
- 1:05:04everybody else, which
- 1:05:05is, which is amazing.
- 1:05:07Why don't we just admit it?
- 1:05:08Why don't we just go through just in case
- 1:05:10people missed last
- 1:05:11episode and I highly recommend
- 1:05:13people watch or
- 1:05:14listen to the last episode.
- 1:05:16But once you just go through the mission
- 1:05:18of the undertow, because we're going to
- 1:05:19be focusing on that today and really
- 1:05:22focusing on the wave maker, but it really
- 1:05:24comes down to the mission.
- 1:05:25So why don't you just kind of
- 1:05:26let people know what that is?
- 1:05:29Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:05:31So the undertow, we say that we are a
- 1:05:34mission driven marketplace for ocean
- 1:05:36knowledge and ocean action.
- 1:05:38And the biggest thing that I think all of
- 1:05:41us connected over was that once you
- 1:05:44connect with somebody about water and
- 1:05:47what inspired them to how that has shaped
- 1:05:49their personal life, their professional
- 1:05:51life and inspire them
- 1:05:51to take action for it.
- 1:05:53That seemed to be really the common
- 1:05:54thread of these incredible change makers,
- 1:05:57whether they were coming from the
- 1:05:58creative side, from the sciences, from
- 1:06:01policy advocacy, there was some sort of
- 1:06:03connection in their personal life that
- 1:06:05made them want to commit and dive in at whatever point in time.
- 1:06:06And for some people, that was very early
- 1:06:12on, like they knew right away that going
- 1:06:14into marine biology was the thing.
- 1:06:16But for a lot of other people, there
- 1:06:18seems to be a very dramatic pivot or
- 1:06:20water awakening, if you will.
- 1:06:23And so it's been, yeah, a really
- 1:06:25interesting and collective
- 1:06:29vision that it is coming together.
- 1:06:31It feels like we're building the thing
- 1:06:32that we all needed in previous careers as
- 1:06:34a place to convene and really catalyze ocean.
- 1:06:35Action. So the undertow's mission is to
- 1:06:39unlock 10 million new ocean connections
- 1:06:43by World Ocean Day 2030.
- 1:06:45But most importantly, as well as unlock 5
- 1:06:48million in ocean in investments for ocean
- 1:06:51towards ocean action, which is great
- 1:06:54because I mean, obviously we agree on
- 1:06:55this because we're driving this mission,
- 1:06:57but it's something that I feel is needed.
- 1:06:58And especially with these connections to
- 1:07:03help guide that awakening. I think a lot
- 1:07:05of people, once they get that awakening,
- 1:07:08I'm someone who's had it since I was a
- 1:07:09kid, always wanting
- 1:07:10to be around the ocean.
- 1:07:12But some of the people who are in their
- 1:07:14adult stage or even any stage of life
- 1:07:17where they're just
- 1:07:17like, what do I do now?
- 1:07:19And they feel overwhelmed. And then
- 1:07:21sometimes that leads to inaction. We want
- 1:07:23to lead them to an action that they feel
- 1:07:25comfortable with, which I
- 1:07:27think is really important.
- 1:07:28I feel a lot of people when I talk to
- 1:07:29them about the ocean, it's like, well, I
- 1:07:30don't know where to
- 1:07:31start. I don't know what to do.
- 1:07:32And then maybe I'll just forget about it
- 1:07:34and like move on with my life, but still
- 1:07:36get that little bit of anxiety.
- 1:07:38You know, we've heard that the term
- 1:07:39climate anxiety, ocean anxiety, and we
- 1:07:41want to get rid of that and start putting
- 1:07:44people on a path to guiding.
- 1:07:47So I love that. I love that. Actually, I
- 1:07:50mean, and so you've been doing that
- 1:07:51through through business and through, you
- 1:07:53know, on the on the business stand front.
- 1:07:56What was that that catalyst that really
- 1:07:59made you like switch? You talked a little
- 1:08:01bit about earlier about, you know, being
- 1:08:03a newer scuba diver.
- 1:08:04What was really that catalyst that made
- 1:08:06you like switch and then actually take
- 1:08:08action through, you know,
- 1:08:10your own personal career?
- 1:08:11Yeah, I think, you know, I think I should
- 1:08:12this and part of this story in the first
- 1:08:14episode, but I've always
- 1:08:18had a bias, you know, younger.
- 1:08:21I was like, oh, like I care about the
- 1:08:23environment. I remember doing like a
- 1:08:24little like project and
- 1:08:26like presentation on it.
- 1:08:28I started a little extracurricular
- 1:08:30volunteer thing about it.
- 1:08:33And then the pressures of life and
- 1:08:36responsibility kind of took over and I
- 1:08:39took a more traditional path and that
- 1:08:40part of me quieted down.
- 1:08:42Right. And I think over the last three or
- 1:08:44four years, as I matured in my
- 1:08:48professional life and my career, I really
- 1:08:50started to ask myself, like, what, what
- 1:08:52do I want to leave behind?
- 1:08:53What's what's the impact I want to make?
- 1:08:56I shared, you know, I've always been a
- 1:08:59snorkeller and a water lover and starting
- 1:09:03to see the differences in the coral life
- 1:09:06in my water experiences and then really
- 1:09:10asking myself, like, I want to I want to
- 1:09:12save this for my future family.
- 1:09:14How am I going to start doing that? I'm
- 1:09:16working all of these hours. I'm so tired.
- 1:09:18You know, like we kind of had I hit that
- 1:09:21wall and I had to ask myself, what am I
- 1:09:23dedicating that time and that legacy and
- 1:09:27that impact professionally into?
- 1:09:30And that's when I started to that was
- 1:09:31kind of like the tipping point, if you
- 1:09:34will, kind of like that personal trigger.
- 1:09:37And then to your point, Andrew, I'm one
- 1:09:40of those people that like kind of
- 1:09:42awakened later in life.
- 1:09:43And so I started diving into all of the
- 1:09:46information and the stories and, you
- 1:09:48know, what is it going to take to be able
- 1:09:51to take my kids snorkeling and
- 1:09:53diving and all of this stuff?
- 1:09:56And it was overwhelming. I connected and
- 1:10:01I was listening to your podcast,
- 1:10:03actually, you know, I was I was trying to
- 1:10:05like educate myself.
- 1:10:06And so I had internally awoken through my
- 1:10:10own passion and through my own love for
- 1:10:14the water and then being able to ask
- 1:10:15myself, OK, well, why do I care about it?
- 1:10:19And what do I want to do for? And for me,
- 1:10:21it was like, well, I'm working all these
- 1:10:23hours and I'm doing all this
- 1:10:24stuff in my professional life.
- 1:10:27Why don't I gear it a little bit more
- 1:10:29towards something that I want to share in
- 1:10:32the future with generations to come, my
- 1:10:34kids being one of them?
- 1:10:36So that trigger point happened. And then
- 1:10:38I Amanda and I connected over over this
- 1:10:42last year or a couple of years ago at you
- 1:10:44in Ocean Decade where I was like and I
- 1:10:46started like kind of getting lost in the
- 1:10:48science and all the stories and all the
- 1:10:51information that was out there.
- 1:10:52And I was like, I wish there was just
- 1:10:54like one place where I could learn about
- 1:10:56how people were starting to make those
- 1:10:58pivots in their lives, how they connected
- 1:11:00and made changes in their daily lives.
- 1:11:03And, you know, I wanted to start going
- 1:11:05plastic free and, you know, it's hard to
- 1:11:07tell what's not green washed and or blue
- 1:11:11washed and what is real and what isn't.
- 1:11:14But I learned a lot through your podcast,
- 1:11:16through the storytelling that I
- 1:11:18experienced with people
- 1:11:19who had shared their journey.
- 1:11:21And I just started to copy it and I was
- 1:11:23like, wouldn't it be great if it was just
- 1:11:24in one place? Like it wasn't wouldn't it
- 1:11:26be great if I could go somewhere I could
- 1:11:29listen to those stories and then I could
- 1:11:31actually make some changes where and when
- 1:11:34I was willing knowing that these people
- 1:11:38have dedicated their lives or are just as
- 1:11:40committed as I am and have started the
- 1:11:42research themselves.
- 1:11:43And so it's kind of like that trusted
- 1:11:46community crowdsourcing marketplace
- 1:11:48concept where we didn't see it out there.
- 1:11:52And so we said, can we create it instead?
- 1:11:56Yeah. And I think what's what's
- 1:11:57interesting about each one of our stories
- 1:11:59and how we all we all met is we all had
- 1:12:02our different projects that we were that
- 1:12:05we were doing. Right.
- 1:12:05Right. Like Amanda, you were on your
- 1:12:07entrepreneurship journey with and
- 1:12:10continue to be with with bringing sort of
- 1:12:13great products that are also
- 1:12:15good for the environment. Right.
- 1:12:18Having those values there, but also
- 1:12:19really helpful products for women and and
- 1:12:22and so forth. And I think
- 1:12:23that was that was really good.
- 1:12:24And then you're helping corporations
- 1:12:26really understand their relationship with
- 1:12:29water, their relationship with the ocean,
- 1:12:31protecting the ocean.
- 1:12:31And for me, we mentioned the podcast.
- 1:12:34We're on it right now to help drive that
- 1:12:36information there, guide people into less
- 1:12:39than that anxiety and just be like, look,
- 1:12:41if you just want to learn that this is
- 1:12:43where you learn, if you want to take
- 1:12:44action, you can take action.
- 1:12:45We all have what we call ourselves wave
- 1:12:48makers. Really, you know, this is where
- 1:12:50it really got like coin for us was just
- 1:12:53like we're each on this individual
- 1:12:55journey with different homes in space,
- 1:13:00you know, whether it be on the Internet
- 1:13:02space, whether it be the corporate space
- 1:13:04or the entrepreneurship space.
- 1:13:05But we didn't really there was really no
- 1:13:08space for wave makers to have an audience
- 1:13:12or build an audience or even provide the
- 1:13:15messaging as well as any sort of products
- 1:13:18and services. And so, I mean, I want you
- 1:13:20to talk a little bit about that wave
- 1:13:22maker aspect here with the undertow and
- 1:13:25say, look, this is
- 1:13:26what we want to be doing.
- 1:13:27We want to be supporting, you know,
- 1:13:29people who are doing very
- 1:13:30similar to what we're doing.
- 1:13:32Yeah, and I love that we've all asked
- 1:13:34this question like, are we wave makers
- 1:13:36yet? Like, have we actually done enough?
- 1:13:38But that's also kind of the beautiful
- 1:13:41thing about letting this community grow
- 1:13:43and evolve organically because the idea
- 1:13:45is whatever your superpowers, whatever
- 1:13:48your skill set is, the ocean needs it.
- 1:13:51So it's not to say this is exclusively
- 1:13:52only for people who are academics and
- 1:13:55researchers and working directly on the
- 1:13:57science because we
- 1:13:57need everybody together.
- 1:13:58So we started looking at how all of our
- 1:14:01paths kind of intersected. And like I
- 1:14:03said before, we're building the thing
- 1:14:04that we all individually needed in
- 1:14:07previous careers. And the thing that I
- 1:14:10like to challenge people when we refer to
- 1:14:11it as a marketplace is as an
- 1:14:13entrepreneur, biggest question I get is
- 1:14:16how are you going to find your customers?
- 1:14:16Find your customers who cares about
- 1:14:19swapping a more sustainable option? And
- 1:14:22my biggest dilemma when I was in
- 1:14:24marketing was I worked in wine. So we
- 1:14:27would always say just get liquid on lips,
- 1:14:30like get them to try
- 1:14:30it before they buy it.
- 1:14:31And if they can taste it, they're going
- 1:14:32to love it. But so often, those free
- 1:14:35samples, they're not only wasteful, but
- 1:14:37they're very expensive. And if you're not
- 1:14:39actually targeting the people who want to
- 1:14:41shop values aligned when we're speaking
- 1:14:43about ocean safe, water conscious
- 1:14:45products, solutions, services, there
- 1:14:48needs to be a place that has that group
- 1:14:51ready and waiting and
- 1:14:53willing to hear from you.
- 1:14:53And in my case, test something that looks
- 1:14:56very ugly, but is functional at an early
- 1:14:58stage. I'm very excited to be able to
- 1:15:02allow the community to test our early
- 1:15:05prototypes. So basically, wave makers are
- 1:15:08people who have really committed to the
- 1:15:13fact that the ocean or water has had such
- 1:15:15a profound impact on their life that they
- 1:15:16wanted to dedicate their
- 1:15:18work and their purpose for it.
- 1:15:19And they have been the initiator on
- 1:15:22whether it's on a project, maybe they're
- 1:15:25the head of an end, they're a founder of
- 1:15:27an NGO or they're the founder of a
- 1:15:29podcast or they have designed a new
- 1:15:32product and they're a founder.
- 1:15:33There are infinite ways to be considered
- 1:15:35a wave maker, but ultimately, it's
- 1:15:37somebody whose relationship to water
- 1:15:39radically changed their life. And now
- 1:15:41they're taking positive action in the
- 1:15:43ocean through a pathway of their own.
- 1:15:45And the goal is to be able to give you a
- 1:15:49place to come and deepen your knowledge
- 1:15:52of the different ways that people are
- 1:15:54connecting and taking action for the
- 1:15:56ocean and inspiring you to find somehow
- 1:15:58that maybe you could latch on to that or
- 1:16:00get inspired to start your own piece.
- 1:16:02But the other thing is we really wanted
- 1:16:05to be able to showcase who is working on
- 1:16:08what because there's so much duplication
- 1:16:11of effort. And it's really about
- 1:16:13empowering people to just be very clear
- 1:16:16on what their specific skill set is and
- 1:16:18what they could
- 1:16:18potentially lend and collaborate.
- 1:16:20And it's about how do we become more
- 1:16:23efficient when we're trying to
- 1:16:25collaborate and co design and network
- 1:16:28with each other and
- 1:16:29really connect with intention.
- 1:16:32And yeah, I think that's what excites me
- 1:16:35the most about it is having this
- 1:16:37connected network of incredible change
- 1:16:40makers who as we say are leading the way
- 1:16:43by making waves and wave makers we see
- 1:16:45that term and all the ocean puns thrown
- 1:16:47around a lot when it comes to branding
- 1:16:49and things in the ocean.
- 1:16:49But for us, it's so specific that it's
- 1:16:53pathways and the waterways that have led
- 1:16:55you to your path and purpose into the
- 1:16:57sustainable ocean economy.
- 1:17:00I'll leave it at that.
- 1:17:01I think you covered it off so great and
- 1:17:04the intentionality behind I know wave
- 1:17:06makers is thrown around, but we spell it
- 1:17:09as in W.A.Y. first because they're
- 1:17:12providing other ways for people to get
- 1:17:17pulled into ocean action.
- 1:17:19Whether that is by first telling their
- 1:17:21story and connecting on a human and
- 1:17:25emotional level to kind of drive that
- 1:17:29water awakening, if you will, whether
- 1:17:31that story is because they people want to
- 1:17:33find a way to sustainably travel or to
- 1:17:36make swaps in their everyday life to
- 1:17:39bring this to their
- 1:17:40company's vision and mission.
- 1:17:43And then providing those solutions. So
- 1:17:46Amanda, you've got your products. I've
- 1:17:48got the business and then the consulting
- 1:17:51side and the storybooks.
- 1:17:52And you've got the podcast, the media
- 1:17:55side of things covered off. And in
- 1:17:58between all of that are the everyday life
- 1:18:00changes that we've made through purchase
- 1:18:03swaps, through volunteer hours, through
- 1:18:06initiatives that we've either supported
- 1:18:08in various ways, whether that's like
- 1:18:11human resource, capital
- 1:18:14resource or otherwise.
- 1:18:15I think what's really important here when
- 1:18:18you are a wave maker and creating new
- 1:18:21ways for people to connect in its story,
- 1:18:25but also the work that you do because the
- 1:18:28other challenge that a lot of our wave
- 1:18:29makers face is SDG 14 is the lowest
- 1:18:33funded SDG of all of them.
- 1:18:36We have a fraction of the amount of
- 1:18:40capital that is being invested in climate
- 1:18:42solutions going to the ocean.
- 1:19:02And so we're going to be able to provide that to people who are interested in the future, whether that's being able to make
- 1:19:05those purchases of ocean safe products,
- 1:19:08whether that is volunteer hours, whether
- 1:19:10that is donations, whether that is
- 1:19:13finding ways to support in bigger ways.
- 1:19:24And so I think that's really important
- 1:19:25because it's going to be an everybody
- 1:19:26effort and we want to be able to provide
- 1:19:28that not only place to land that you know
- 1:19:31that platform that infrastructure to
- 1:19:32start centralizing things.
- 1:19:34We want to provide a community to drive
- 1:19:36that ongoing learning because I can
- 1:19:38assure you I'm not going to go back to
- 1:19:40school to become a marine anything.
- 1:19:46I think that's a simple path to taking
- 1:19:48action, whether that is everyday
- 1:19:50products, projects and or company
- 1:19:54initiatives, this kind of thing.
- 1:19:57Yeah, you hit the nail right on the head
- 1:19:58when you just said that.
- 1:19:59I've met a lot of people over my time
- 1:20:02where they get that awakening and all of
- 1:20:04a sudden, like, I need to go back and
- 1:20:06become a marine biologist. I need to
- 1:20:07become a science. I need to do four years
- 1:20:09of undergrad, even though I already did
- 1:20:10four years of undergrad, or maybe I need
- 1:20:12to do a master's or maybe I need to a
- 1:20:13PhD, which if that's their choice, I
- 1:20:15always say, go ahead, do that.
- 1:20:17But a lot of times people are well into
- 1:20:19their careers. They might have families.
- 1:20:21They might have financial obligations
- 1:20:24that they have to be there where that
- 1:20:25commitment and that sacrifice
- 1:20:26to go back to school is a lot.
- 1:20:29You know, it's a difficult thing. And I
- 1:20:31always tell people like, look, we have a
- 1:20:32lot of scientists. We have a lot of
- 1:20:34marine biologists out there. Obviously,
- 1:20:36we need more, but there's a competition
- 1:20:37for funding and it's not easy to get jobs
- 1:20:40when you're doing that.
- 1:20:41And we need more people in different
- 1:20:43places and different career paths,
- 1:20:47different sectors to really have that
- 1:20:49mindset of what can I do with my skill
- 1:20:52set right now to be able to put it on
- 1:20:55there? And I think that's where the
- 1:20:57guidance becomes a little wishy washy,
- 1:21:00for lack of a better term.
- 1:21:02And it's where do I go from here? How do
- 1:21:07I apply it? And do I need to join a board
- 1:21:10for a nonprofit, which that could be a
- 1:21:12great way to support your local nonprofit
- 1:21:14or do I need to start my own project?
- 1:21:16And I think over my time, I've done this
- 1:21:19for 10 years now, right? And with this
- 1:21:21podcasting, and I've been in the marine
- 1:21:23biology business for a long time, like
- 1:21:26almost more than 20 years.
- 1:21:28God, I'm old. This is crazy.
- 1:21:28But anyway, regardless, like I've been in
- 1:21:31this for a while and I've met a lot of
- 1:21:33people doing the podcast. I've talked to
- 1:21:35a lot of people and I've seen some great
- 1:21:37things from from people like from my
- 1:21:40guests and talking about different
- 1:21:42projects, but
- 1:21:43everybody's doing it on their own.
- 1:21:45You know, a lot of the times they there's
- 1:21:48what I've noticed is there's this
- 1:21:50category of people and doesn't happen
- 1:21:52with everybody and that's fine. But
- 1:21:53there's a category of people who are just
- 1:21:56they've got such a passion for what they
- 1:21:58want to do that. They just they do it on
- 1:22:00their own. They just go ahead and do it.
- 1:22:01And they may get funding another way,
- 1:22:03whether it's through Patreon or whether
- 1:22:05it's through a service
- 1:22:05or a product or whatever.
- 1:22:06But they do it no matter what at a
- 1:22:09sacrifice of their own time of their own
- 1:22:12lifestyle and or they change their
- 1:22:14lifestyle to do it because they have a
- 1:22:16real passion for it. But it doesn't fit
- 1:22:17within the mold of our traditional marine
- 1:22:21biology, marine conservation, nonprofit
- 1:22:23or even government model.
- 1:22:24And they may not get support through that
- 1:22:27through their own company or through
- 1:22:28their own whoever they're working for. So
- 1:22:30they started on their own, but they're
- 1:22:32all it's all individual. It's all on
- 1:22:35their own. And I feel like they're there
- 1:22:37and they felt like this for a long time.
- 1:22:39And when Undertow came along, I'm like,
- 1:22:40yes, this is this is it. There needs to
- 1:22:42be a place where people can come share
- 1:22:45their projects, share their missions and
- 1:22:47then also have that infrastructure to
- 1:22:49build a business around it and get
- 1:22:51supported financially through it because
- 1:22:53these are important things that could do it.
- 1:22:54And it doesn't only drive the next big
- 1:22:56wave of change that we've seen and and go
- 1:22:59beyond what we see the traditional join a
- 1:23:02non profit organization get paid very
- 1:23:04little. You know, there's nothing wrong
- 1:23:06with making money and still doing good
- 1:23:08for the ocean, you know, and I've been a
- 1:23:10big advocate of that for the last, you
- 1:23:13know, 1012 years and and I'm still going
- 1:23:15to be that for going forward.
- 1:23:16going forward. So I love to like once we
- 1:23:19started talking about the WaveMaker and
- 1:23:21defining what that is, I can see people.
- 1:23:24You know we have a list of people that
- 1:23:25you know we are going to invite and we're
- 1:23:28inviting it already to join as a
- 1:23:31WaveMaker and this is exciting because
- 1:23:33now we get to provide a place where they
- 1:23:37are supported, where they can share with
- 1:23:39each other, they can
- 1:23:40share with us. I mean
- 1:23:41we're all you know we've kind of coined
- 1:23:43ourselves WaveMakers because we've been
- 1:23:45doing this so we know a lot of the
- 1:23:46struggles, we know a lot of what what's
- 1:23:48necessary and I know and both of you
- 1:23:52ladies know too like building a
- 1:23:53community, being part of a community,
- 1:23:54doing something that may be different
- 1:23:57will really help support us and that's
- 1:23:59that's what I'm really excited about you
- 1:24:01know around this time like obviously the
- 1:24:03need for you know building that in for
- 1:24:06helping them build that infrastructure,
- 1:24:07having a community and building that
- 1:24:09community for them but also just being
- 1:24:11able to talk to somebody else who's
- 1:24:12gone through the same thing and share the
- 1:24:14woes and share the successes you
- 1:24:17know and support each other because like
- 1:24:19I don't know about you ladies but
- 1:24:20like there have been a lot of times where
- 1:24:22I'd be like am I is this right is this
- 1:24:24what I'm like should I really be doing
- 1:24:26this I spend a lot of time on this like
- 1:24:28is this what I really need to be doing
- 1:24:30and the answer is yes every time but
- 1:24:32sometimes it helps because we all the
- 1:24:34three of us talk about it's like no
- 1:24:35we're doing the right like this is all of
- 1:24:38us individually are doing what we
- 1:24:39need to do and then collectively like
- 1:24:41yeah this is what we need to do we need
- 1:24:42to help support through I think you were
- 1:24:44about to say so yeah like it's funny
- 1:24:46because we're early enough to that the
- 1:24:48beauty of this is our community and our
- 1:24:51way makers get to shape the rest of this
- 1:24:53infrastructure we're we're just the
- 1:24:56catalyst of this all right because we had
- 1:24:59such a desire to be like where do I
- 1:25:01get this information oh I met that person
- 1:25:04along my journey and I met that
- 1:25:05person along my journey and they're
- 1:25:06really cool and I'm like how do I keep
- 1:25:10track of them all you know how do I keep
- 1:25:11track of them all and the progress
- 1:25:13that they're making in the products are
- 1:25:15creating or the initiatives that they're
- 1:25:17kicking off how do I share that with
- 1:25:20people because you know as I dove into
- 1:25:23this sector people are like Serena like
- 1:25:25what is the blue economy like why the
- 1:25:27ocean and I start to share what I've
- 1:25:29learned over the last little bit they're
- 1:25:31like oh yeah you know what I've always
- 1:25:34had a connection to the ocean and I'd
- 1:25:36love to do something but like where do I
- 1:25:38start back to kind of like what people
- 1:25:40were saying you right and so now when I
- 1:25:42have those conversations with people who
- 1:25:44first off question why I made the change
- 1:25:46and to want to know how they can
- 1:25:49support me or want to make changes in
- 1:25:53their life and say like I'd love to help
- 1:25:55somehow but you know I'm too busy like
- 1:25:57can you just point me in the direction I
- 1:25:59can invite them to the the undertow and
- 1:26:01they'll have a place where they can hear
- 1:26:02more stories like mine probably
- 1:26:05strengthen their connection to the water
- 1:26:07learn a little bit more but also take
- 1:26:09that action right so infrastructure
- 1:26:12community the action pathways like
- 1:26:14they're they're all such a fundamental
- 1:26:18part of this community right now and we
- 1:26:21hope that everybody will participate in
- 1:26:23helping us continue to evolve it and
- 1:26:26continue to give them the experience that
- 1:26:29maybe they were looking for and so kind
- 1:26:32of put this on the back burner because it
- 1:26:35was overwhelming and there was too many
- 1:26:37options and it was hard to tell what was
- 1:26:40real versus you know on its way to being
- 1:26:42real versus maybe something that
- 1:26:46that could use a little bit more research
- 1:26:49yeah absolutely well I think I
- 1:26:53think also it's interesting too is like
- 1:26:54we I when I meet someone who is a wave
- 1:26:58maker or who we define as a wave maker I
- 1:27:00get so inspired I get excited I get
- 1:27:02giddy when it when I when I mean it like
- 1:27:04just the other day posted an
- 1:27:06interview I've had him on a number of
- 1:27:08times and dr. Andrew Thaler it's always
- 1:27:10doing these individual projects you know
- 1:27:12working with this you know local
- 1:27:13government you know being on and
- 1:27:14commissions and stuff like I spending a
- 1:27:16lot of time doing this stuff just for his
- 1:27:19local town you know of a small town
- 1:27:21getting over flooding and all this kind
- 1:27:23of stuff and he comes up with all these
- 1:27:25projects and you get inspired by it
- 1:27:29you're just like oh this is awesome and
- 1:27:31I think having wave makers in the
- 1:27:34undertow community will help I think
- 1:27:36inspire people who join the community who
- 1:27:38may not have that project just yet or
- 1:27:41that individual sort of like goal yet but
- 1:27:46might get inspired by what other
- 1:27:48people are doing but oh maybe I can do
- 1:27:49something similar or I've always wanted
- 1:27:51to do this and just finally pull that
- 1:27:53trigger and say yes like like this is it
- 1:27:56just like kind of what we all went
- 1:27:57through in a different pathway so man
- 1:27:59like you meet a lot of people you know
- 1:28:02who were doing different things in and
- 1:28:04outside of the ocean was there one point
- 1:28:06where you were just like so you met
- 1:28:07somebody and you were just like oh wow
- 1:28:10like this person is a wave maker like
- 1:28:12this person I would love to either work
- 1:28:15with this person or just get completely
- 1:28:16inspired in what they're doing yeah and
- 1:28:20so when I first was starting my company
- 1:28:25because I decided I need to pivot from
- 1:28:27the wine industry figure out how to be a
- 1:28:29marketer in the ocean space not gonna go
- 1:28:32be a marine biologist but I love
- 1:28:34scuba diving so maybe I can find a way
- 1:28:35for the ocean scuba diving to be in my
- 1:28:38life as a communications professional and
- 1:28:40so I needed to build a network I
- 1:28:42needed to talk to people who are in it
- 1:28:44but no idea the vastness of opportunities
- 1:28:47that existed and so I was trying to
- 1:28:53develop products and develop a brand I
- 1:28:56didn't have time to blog so I'm like I'm
- 1:28:57gonna start a podcast I just love
- 1:28:59documenting these conversations with
- 1:29:01people who's amazing again personal
- 1:29:04connection to water has inspired them to
- 1:29:06initiate something cool and it started
- 1:29:09as just a way for me to all be able to
- 1:29:11look back like once I had launched a
- 1:29:13business and think of all the cool
- 1:29:15intersections of people so like I talked
- 1:29:18to water some l.a.s who had like health
- 1:29:20scares and that was their path into
- 1:29:22educating people on the importance of
- 1:29:25clean safe drinking water and health
- 1:29:26and hydration I did a citizen science
- 1:29:29project of my own and I talked to the
- 1:29:30founder of that she was a Canadian she
- 1:29:32established a product project in
- 1:29:35Nusa Penida Indonesia and now has scaled
- 1:29:38that project to multiple sites
- 1:29:40all over Asia and being able to bring
- 1:29:43people along to educate pairing them up
- 1:29:45with marine biologists on the ground
- 1:29:47involving them in their coral research
- 1:29:49so I was meeting mermaids like I was
- 1:29:52meeting all these super cool people
- 1:29:53with interesting stories people who
- 1:29:55consistently felt like even though they
- 1:29:58were doing so much they felt like it
- 1:30:00wasn't of value and so it was also a way
- 1:30:03to remind people that whatever small
- 1:30:05action you are taking
- 1:30:07whether you've chosen now
- 1:30:09to eliminate plastic in your bathroom or
- 1:30:11shorten your shower
- 1:30:12time all the way up to like
- 1:30:14establishing a citizen science project
- 1:30:16whatever you're doing it's
- 1:30:18important and we need to bring
- 1:30:19awareness to it so that people don't feel
- 1:30:21irrelevant or
- 1:30:23undervalued and starting with
- 1:30:25your story and your connection and your
- 1:30:27why behind why you're
- 1:30:29doing your work and it's such a
- 1:30:31beautiful and sometimes complicated thing
- 1:30:34to have your personal life
- 1:30:35intersect so much with your
- 1:30:36work like because there's no separation
- 1:30:38sometimes but um it was
- 1:30:43also a struggle for me as I was
- 1:30:44trying to navigate who am I in this ocean
- 1:30:48space am I amanda the
- 1:30:49marketer am I an ocean advocate
- 1:30:51I'm not really a credible ocean advocate
- 1:30:53yet what do I need to become
- 1:30:55that how do I build products
- 1:30:57that people who work on the sciences
- 1:30:59would actually validate and want to use
- 1:31:02um so that's been a whole
- 1:31:04very interesting I don't want to be
- 1:31:05another greenwashing marketer that was my
- 1:31:07reason for wanting to leave
- 1:31:09um the industry and create real change
- 1:31:11from the outside and
- 1:31:12hopefully bring that back into supply
- 1:31:14chains and when you're doing all of this
- 1:31:17mission driven work and you're an
- 1:31:18individual or independent
- 1:31:20you have you wear a lot of different hats
- 1:31:21you've all these different
- 1:31:22projects doesn't matter what
- 1:31:24organization you work for it starts with
- 1:31:26you and what your connection is and then
- 1:31:28you're the sum of all of those
- 1:31:30experiences your own knowledge
- 1:31:32maybe you're not considered you don't
- 1:31:34consider yourself an expert but your
- 1:31:36lived experience and
- 1:31:37knowledge is just as important um in a
- 1:31:40different way so it's how did we create
- 1:31:42this organic ecosystem
- 1:31:44where people can show up as they are um
- 1:31:47leading with themselves leading with
- 1:31:49their personal story
- 1:31:50that's where people connect and those
- 1:31:52were the conversations that were having
- 1:31:53the most impact on me
- 1:31:55was when I can tell somebody like oh my
- 1:31:57first love is dance and now all of a
- 1:31:59sudden I'm meeting like somebody who is
- 1:32:00working with dancers underwater
- 1:32:02and playing with freediving techniques
- 1:32:04and doing this I don't know needing
- 1:32:07stuntmen and like who are the
- 1:32:10avatar freediving team like there are
- 1:32:12infinite intersections in
- 1:32:13ways that everything connects
- 1:32:15to water so that's what inspires me
- 1:32:17there's not one that stands out and I've
- 1:32:20been I have this running record of over
- 1:32:23like 200 names now of people that like
- 1:32:25you're away from here like anyone so um
- 1:32:29I'm so excited to see
- 1:32:30this grow and have people
- 1:32:32be inspired to refer and nominate each
- 1:32:35other and that's I think the
- 1:32:37thing that I want us to always
- 1:32:39be conscious of is that Serena, Andrew
- 1:32:42and Amanda like we are not the undertow
- 1:32:44it is this collective
- 1:32:47and it's everybody as individuals so
- 1:32:50three of us came together as individuals
- 1:32:52underneath this umbrella
- 1:32:54and anybody else who is taking positive
- 1:32:56action for water like you belong here and
- 1:32:59whether like it's as a wave maker or is
- 1:33:01as a community member
- 1:33:03like that's that power of small like
- 1:33:07individual collective action that is
- 1:33:08going to add up to a positive impacts
- 1:33:11yeah and I think the big thing here is as
- 1:33:14part of this community is collaboration
- 1:33:16right like that's a big
- 1:33:17thing we are from an industry
- 1:33:20no matter where you come from science
- 1:33:22business you know marketing
- 1:33:24communications it is a community that
- 1:33:27continues to talk about collaboration
- 1:33:29a lot of times fails with collaboration
- 1:33:32you know on a on an over you know just an
- 1:33:34overview site even in
- 1:33:36in the when you get into the weeds of it
- 1:33:37all and that is the the most
- 1:33:40frustrating part of working
- 1:33:41with an industry is the lack of
- 1:33:43collaboration and a lot of times it's not
- 1:33:45necessarily one or two
- 1:33:47organizations or people it's just the way
- 1:33:49the system is set up it's
- 1:33:51this it's you know people are
- 1:33:52competing for the same funding over and
- 1:33:55over again and people are competing for
- 1:33:57just different aspects of it and it just
- 1:33:59forms this me against you type of thing
- 1:34:02and I need to get ahead and and that's a
- 1:34:04big problem which we're trying to
- 1:34:06cut away you know in in the undertow with
- 1:34:09with wave makers is to collaborate there
- 1:34:11might be some wave makers that
- 1:34:13speak about the same things or have very
- 1:34:15similar missions and you
- 1:34:16know they're they might do well
- 1:34:18by combining might do well by supporting
- 1:34:20each other they might do well you know
- 1:34:22interacting with each
- 1:34:23other and still be able to
- 1:34:25succeed both of them or more than one or
- 1:34:27or however that might be and I think that
- 1:34:30is one of the the
- 1:34:31foundations that we've been
- 1:34:33wanting to discuss because we've all gone
- 1:34:34through it and and it sucks and when
- 1:34:37we're come together and we
- 1:34:39collaborate that's when we really start
- 1:34:41to start to really see
- 1:34:43change happen and I think that's
- 1:34:45something that I'm looking forward to
- 1:34:46seeing in the undertow and
- 1:34:48providing in the undertow and
- 1:34:50and it takes a lot from each individual
- 1:34:52to just be like yeah look I want to see
- 1:34:54you succeed I want you to do well and I
- 1:34:57think that's what it really comes down to
- 1:34:58when we see these wave makers get
- 1:35:00inspired like I wanna do something that
- 1:35:02helps you know build whatever business
- 1:35:04you have whatever services or products that you have.
- 1:35:04have what are their services or products
- 1:35:06that you have what can I
- 1:35:07do to help and let's provide
- 1:35:09a community for that. So I think this is
- 1:35:12this is really great in
- 1:35:14terms of of WaveMaker. Let's
- 1:35:16let's now people might be listening to
- 1:35:18this like like I think I'm a
- 1:35:19WaveMaker or I want to join
- 1:35:21the undertow as a community member or
- 1:35:24thing. I mean why don't we just talk a
- 1:35:26little bit about like
- 1:35:27how they can join and and what the next
- 1:35:31step. Wait can I jump
- 1:35:32in Andrew because I think
- 1:35:33I think you know you frame that up so
- 1:35:35well and and it's a
- 1:35:36great lead and and so like if
- 1:35:39we've talked about all the components so
- 1:35:41if we were to summarize
- 1:35:42this if you're a WaveMaker
- 1:35:43right what I'm hearing slash what I know
- 1:35:47because we're building
- 1:35:48this is we're going to be that
- 1:35:51that place for you that infrastructure
- 1:35:54for you to plug your years
- 1:35:57of work dedication research
- 1:36:00commitment to whether it's the products
- 1:36:02you've been creating the
- 1:36:03services the initiatives
- 1:36:07and the story that started at all yeah
- 1:36:10we're going to give you
- 1:36:12that place we're all going to
- 1:36:14be a part of this collective community on
- 1:36:16this mission to drive 10
- 1:36:18million new ocean connections
- 1:36:19and drive more funding five million in
- 1:36:21ocean action and we're
- 1:36:24going to create the action
- 1:36:27pathways for people who don't really know
- 1:36:29where to start to be able to
- 1:36:31start making those everyday
- 1:36:33changes in their lives in their personal
- 1:36:35lives in their communities and
- 1:36:37hopefully at at a later stage
- 1:36:39in the companies that they might
- 1:36:41represent and be advocates for and within
- 1:36:43so that's our WaveMakers
- 1:36:45and for our community side the 10 million
- 1:36:48of you hopefully we
- 1:36:49bring together because you're
- 1:36:51inspired by Amanda's story you're
- 1:36:53inspired by Andrew's story
- 1:36:55maybe you're inspired by mine or
- 1:36:58Amanda the the folks that you met the 200
- 1:37:01the list of 200 folks
- 1:37:02you have on your list
- 1:37:03Andrew the I don't know I don't even know
- 1:37:05what number episode
- 1:37:06you're on to be honest
- 1:37:08episode a million of the podcast that you
- 1:37:11brought through like our
- 1:37:13community has a place now to come
- 1:37:16be inspired by those stories learn build
- 1:37:19their ocean knowledge and then take those
- 1:37:22action pathways so now Amanda you know I
- 1:37:26I think this is a great
- 1:37:27site I wanted to summarize
- 1:37:29everything that I heard I think that we
- 1:37:31talked about it in pieces
- 1:37:32but Amanda over to you that's
- 1:37:34perfect excellent segue there's so many
- 1:37:38things to do um so we're
- 1:37:41excited because right now
- 1:37:43tomorrow I guess is uh the start or this
- 1:37:47week is the start of world
- 1:37:48ocean week or ocean month and
- 1:37:51we always reach this dilemma oh it's
- 1:37:53earth month like just do a social media
- 1:37:55post it goes so much
- 1:37:56beyond that like how are you now
- 1:37:58integrating and weaving in these
- 1:38:00conscious actions in your
- 1:38:01everyday life I love now when people say
- 1:38:04oh you're really into the
- 1:38:05environment I'm like well we kind
- 1:38:06of have to be and that's not like a trend
- 1:38:09it's not a hot new thing so
- 1:38:12we're excited that the first
- 1:38:14action that if you have no idea where to
- 1:38:16start join the community and
- 1:38:18that means that what you're
- 1:38:19going to have access to is you're going
- 1:38:21to hear and it gets to the
- 1:38:24chance to explore a new ocean
- 1:38:26connection every month um we're going to
- 1:38:29whether that's art that's
- 1:38:31music mindfulness travel
- 1:38:33conservation coral will get super
- 1:38:35specific depending on who
- 1:38:37the wave maker and what their
- 1:38:38story is but we invite you to explore and
- 1:38:41open your mind to a new way
- 1:38:43that you never thought life
- 1:38:44was interconnected to the ocean through
- 1:38:46the life and the lens of
- 1:38:47whoever that featured wave maker
- 1:38:49is as a storyteller that month and from
- 1:38:52there you'll be invited to
- 1:38:54shop around the marketplace
- 1:38:56whether it's something in action that you
- 1:38:58can take in your personal
- 1:38:59life um or if it's a solution
- 1:39:03maybe it's you work for your you're like
- 1:39:06looking for a b2b solution of a new
- 1:39:08plastics replacement
- 1:39:09to pull into your your supply there are
- 1:39:12infinite things that are
- 1:39:13going to appear on here all the
- 1:39:14way to immersive water experiences so you
- 1:39:17can get yourself in the water
- 1:39:19and really feel connected to
- 1:39:21what it is that we're talking about
- 1:39:23because reconnecting with
- 1:39:25nature I can tell is just
- 1:39:27driving people's new passion for saving
- 1:39:29the environment and once you go
- 1:39:32underwater you snorkel on a coral reef
- 1:39:35when that is alive and thriving you never
- 1:39:37forget it like whether you love spending
- 1:39:39time just by the water or on it it's
- 1:39:42physically being connected to it that is
- 1:39:44going to be the most inspiring and the
- 1:39:47best way that we can do in a virtual
- 1:39:49context um is to bring you as many
- 1:39:52different stories and perspectives as as
- 1:39:53we can and that's a whole other
- 1:39:55conversation on like building an online community and that's what we're talking about.
- 1:39:57um from a community and what this looks
- 1:39:58like from a design side but we know that
- 1:40:01community driven initiatives are the most
- 1:40:03effective and digital infrastructure
- 1:40:05underlies a lot of what we do how we can
- 1:40:08coordinate and collaborate in a more
- 1:40:10effective and efficient way and build new interesting social enterprise like business models that are actually going to help flow funding into the issues um and the sustainable develop goals that we that we care the most about so join the community that's that's a really important thing to want.
- 1:40:11and efficient way and build new
- 1:40:13interesting social enterprise like
- 1:40:16business models that
- 1:40:17are actually going to help flow funding
- 1:40:19into the issues and the
- 1:40:22sustainable development
- 1:40:23goals that we care the most about.
- 1:40:25So join the community.
- 1:40:27That's your first action.
- 1:40:28Come on in, start joining our monthly
- 1:40:30events, meeting other
- 1:40:31people whose lives and work
- 1:40:33have been inspired by water.
- 1:40:36And I guarantee there's no shortage of
- 1:40:38inspiration in this group of
- 1:40:40people that is lurking below
- 1:40:43the surface.
