Transcript
- 0:14Thank you.
- 0:49when that legislation passed in Massachusetts the manufacturers
- 0:54and all the states
- 0:55got together and agreed the one set of policies for making
- 1:02software available so
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: what that does um
- 1:14What that does is it allows for your laptop to communicate with
- 1:19the computer.
- 1:22It allows for the laptop to communicate with your computers in
- 1:25the vehicle.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So going back to what I was saying...
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: This is a J2534.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: This is a Cardac Pro 360.
- 1:36There's a lot of different manufacturers of it,
- 1:40but that's the one that I got.
- 1:42They run about $2,000,
- 1:43and they are the result of right-to-repair legislation in
- 1:49Massachusetts.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: When it passed in Massachusetts,
- 1:52the manufacturers got together with the states and agreed to
- 1:55one set of policies
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: governing right-to-repair
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: across all the states.
- 2:00And what it does is it allows your laptop to communicate with
- 2:04the computers in your
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: vehicle,
- 2:07and it allows you to reprogram your laptop using
- 2:12factory-supplied software.
- 2:13So the manufacturers had to supply their factory programming
- 2:19software to everybody,
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: and you can get it on nastif.org.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: You have to register, and you can download all of that software.
- 2:28The interesting thing is that you can really only run one
- 2:32software per computer.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: So if you're doing a lot of programming like I plan to be doing,
- 2:38you're going to either have to have a bunch of external hard
- 2:43drives for each
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: different manufacturer or a bunch of different computers.
- 2:47There's actually a company called Auto Rescue Tool and Battery
- 2:51or something like that.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: that provides a laptop that's already set up for that.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: So anyway,
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 3:00it's interesting that you can actually see the result of
- 3:03legislation in a product
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: that's available on the market.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Without that legislation, that product would not exist at all.
- 3:14Um,
- 3:14it came about in 20,
- 3:16the rights repair legislation passed Massachusetts in 2019.
- 3:19And that's why a lot of rights repair advocates are working on
- 3:22state levels because
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: they feel like if they get one passed at one state,
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: that the manufacturers,
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: instead of fighting it in every single state,
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: which would be too expensive,
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: they just go ahead and capitulate to the rights repair stuff.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: So the difference between automotive manufacturers and like,
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: farm equipment is there's no right to repair for farm equipment.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So you still have to take your vehicle,
- 3:47your piece of farm equipment back to the dealer if there's an
- 3:50electronic problem
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: and to be able to get programming.
- 3:53Whereas independent shops can purchase this type of equipment
- 3:58and be able to
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: program the computers in your car.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Now, most shops don't do this.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Very few shops actually do programming,
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: especially independent shops actually do programming in-house.
- 4:11They usually send it to the dealer or they get somebody to come
- 4:15in and do it,
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: which is the business model that I'm planning on using.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: It's not straightforward.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: All the manufacturers are different.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: There's issues with keys.
- 4:27Some of the keys have to be read into the computer and some of
- 4:32you have to have
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: special credentials on some manufacturers to read keys into the computer.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So, you know, like I said, it's not straightforward at all.
- 4:41This piece of equipment that I got actually has remote assist
- 4:45programming where you
- 4:46can just basically hook the J2534 up to the vehicle and
- 4:53somebody on a tech line on
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: the other end will program the vehicle for you,
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: which is pretty cool,
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: but it's really expensive.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: It's $150 to $180 depending on the vehicle.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So I think that's pretty interesting.
- 5:08The only reason that you don't have to take your vehicle to the
- 5:11dealer to get
- 5:11programming done and the only reason that I can even have the
- 5:15business that I have
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: is because of rights repair legislation.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: So, you know, maybe the government's not all bad.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: So anyway, we'll see y'all next time.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Peace, y'all.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Any questions?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: See y'all later.
