- 0:00Speaker 1: You are now watching four All All Nerds and on
- 0:02Speaker 1: this episode we review Supergirl. Hey, this is Tatiana King
- 0:17Speaker 1: and I'm here with four All Nerds to review Supergirl
- 0:20Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. It has been directed by Craig Gillespie
- 0:25Speaker 1: and stars Milly Alcock as Supergirl, David Cornso as Superman,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Eve Ridley as Ruthie, and also my boy Jason Momoa
- 0:34Speaker 1: as Lobo. From an overall perspective, I thought it was
- 0:38Speaker 1: I I did not necessarily think it was an incredible movie,
- 0:44Speaker 1: nor did I think it was a really bad movie either.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Let me give you the good about Supergirl. The greatest
- 0:50Speaker 1: thing about Supergirl is Milli Alcock. Her Supergirl portrayal is incredible.
- 0:56Speaker 1: She really reads the character with a lot of heart.
- 0:59Speaker 1: She plays the car with a lot of energy and fervor,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and I think people will like that about her rendition
- 1:05Speaker 1: of Supergirl. I think people will like her more grounded
- 1:08Speaker 1: version of Carzil. I do think that it's easy to
- 1:14Speaker 1: connect with the character, just in the sense of you
- 1:17Speaker 1: kind of already had a lot of lead up to her,
- 1:20Speaker 1: particularly in the Newest Superman film that came out, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: as well as if you're just a DC fan, you
- 1:25Speaker 1: already know that she's coming, right, You already know that
- 1:29Speaker 1: she was to be expected. And Millie Alcock herself as
- 1:32Speaker 1: a actress has a lot of good will from her
- 1:35Speaker 1: time as young Ranera Targarian in the House of Dragon series,
- 1:39Speaker 1: So that alone will already put her up when it
- 1:43Speaker 1: comes to enjoying watching her as Supergirl. That said, you
- 1:47Speaker 1: also get to see a lot of Superman, and a
- 1:49Speaker 1: lot more than I thought you would actually see in
- 1:52Speaker 1: this film. David Corusa also has a lot of goodwill
- 1:55Speaker 1: from his debut as Superman. Milli does an incredible job
- 1:59Speaker 1: in turn of how she delivers her character, how she
- 2:03Speaker 1: delivers the heartest Supergirl, the fact that Supergirl is the
- 2:08Speaker 1: no holds barred cousin of Superman, right, she not only
- 2:13Speaker 1: doesn't really hold back, she also more has more realism
- 2:17Speaker 1: to things, like even though she says she is good
- 2:21Speaker 1: and wants to do good things, you know she takes
- 2:25Speaker 1: to the step above where Superman would typically take things,
- 2:27Speaker 1: whether it's fighting, whether it's making decisions really the hard
- 2:31Speaker 1: decisions that soups may not make, that she will make
- 2:35Speaker 1: generally without hesitation. And I enjoy that about her. I
- 2:38Speaker 1: will say throughout the film that the things where Superman
- 2:41Speaker 1: would be more like kumbayaying about Supergirl was just like naso,
- 2:46Speaker 1: we just have to get this done and over it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And I really appreciate that about Millie's portrayal Supergirl. This Supergirl. Also,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you get to see her fighting prowess. I think that
- 2:55Speaker 1: the way they did the fightings was phenomenal. I do
- 2:59Speaker 1: like that again, and you get to see at least
- 3:02Speaker 1: a subset of her powers. You do get to see
- 3:05Speaker 1: some of her skill, some of her strength, and this film,
- 3:09Speaker 1: for me, it actually made me feel that Supergirl was
- 3:12Speaker 1: way more skilled, at least in hand to hand than Superman. Again,
- 3:16Speaker 1: not sure it's just because he just holds back or
- 3:19Speaker 1: because he's a corn fed boy from Kansas, but Supergirl
- 3:24Speaker 1: got hands and feet and everything else. So I really
- 3:27Speaker 1: appreciate that about how they displayed that in the movie.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And you know, when you're just seeing the trailers, you say,
- 3:35Speaker 1: of the fight sies look kind of tough, and some
- 3:36Speaker 1: of them really were. I would say between just the
- 3:40Speaker 1: overall portrayal from Millie Alcock as Supergirl and how they
- 3:46Speaker 1: told her backstory, where the strongest pieces of the Supergirl film.
- 3:50Speaker 1: You do get the version of Supergirl from the Silver
- 3:53Speaker 1: Age origin where Argo City a piece of Krypton that
- 3:58Speaker 1: survive the general explosion of the entire planet, and so
- 4:02Speaker 1: they lived for quite a while and she was able
- 4:05Speaker 1: to grow up within that space still carry on the
- 4:09Speaker 1: values and the history and the culture of Krypton. So
- 4:13Speaker 1: she's well versed in steeped in the Kryptonian language in
- 4:18Speaker 1: as mentioned, the background, the understanding, and she had a
- 4:22Speaker 1: full fledged family that she knew and grew up with,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and unfortunately, due to issues beyond her control, she had
- 4:29Speaker 1: to be pretty much rescued off the planet. So her
- 4:33Speaker 1: dad sent her away and sent her to Earth to
- 4:36Speaker 1: join her cousin kylel The fact that you get to
- 4:40Speaker 1: see Supergirl interact with Superman was really strong, and to
- 4:45Speaker 1: see that dynamic between them, not just the kind of
- 4:48Speaker 1: cousin brother sisterly type dynamic, but like really the major
- 4:53Speaker 1: differences in how they go about life and how they
- 4:56Speaker 1: determine how they're going to handle a situation. You really
- 4:59Speaker 1: get to see the cond trest there, and I really
- 5:01Speaker 1: appreciated that. Besides that, I had lots of notes, lots
- 5:05Speaker 1: of notes about this film, lots of notes just about
- 5:09Speaker 1: the overall approach to story, I found a story lacking.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The story is very very simple. Millie's trying to save
- 5:18Speaker 1: her dog, and throughout the process it slowly becomes a
- 5:21Speaker 1: little bit of John Wick in Space just starting a Supergirl.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Her entire mode is to do anything. In this film
- 5:28Speaker 1: really is generally about saving her dog. You are introduced
- 5:33Speaker 1: to Ruthie and her tragedy that happens to her and
- 5:36Speaker 1: how Supergirl gets intertwined into her life, and then after
- 5:41Speaker 1: that it just really becomes kind of a rope story.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And that's what bothered me the most. Like I was
- 5:47Speaker 1: super looking forward to this film being really compelling, doing
- 5:52Speaker 1: a different version of you know, a super person, right like,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and when I say different, I mean, for example, Superman.
- 5:59Speaker 1: This this more u and version of Superman had been
- 6:02Speaker 1: very colorful, very bright, and Superman puriods would tell you
- 6:06Speaker 1: probably the best Superman ever, the closest thing you'll see.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And for me, it really gave Guardians of the Galaxy
- 6:12Speaker 1: meets Superman. And for some people that's fine, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I had my questions on that, but it is what
- 6:18Speaker 1: it is. And then Supergirl was just not as bubbly
- 6:23Speaker 1: and bright, which is fine. And great. I appreciated the
- 6:27Speaker 1: again the more realistic approach to it, but it felt
- 6:31Speaker 1: a little Star warsy at times too. It felt a
- 6:33Speaker 1: little Star Wars y. It felt a little as mentioned
- 6:37Speaker 1: John Wick, it was just kind of a strange approach
- 6:42Speaker 1: to this story. And it was super simple. Not saying
- 6:46Speaker 1: simple can't be good. It's just it didn't offer anything
- 6:51Speaker 1: by way of making you intrigued by the story. Like
- 6:55Speaker 1: there were some throwaway villains, the main one being crem
- 7:00Speaker 1: Or Cream or whatever how you pronounce his name, play
- 7:02Speaker 1: by Matthias showing arts. It just was disappointing in that way.
- 7:07Speaker 1: It didn't deliver me anything new. It didn't deliver me
- 7:11Speaker 1: anything incredible or exciting. It was just kind of another
- 7:16Speaker 1: flat story about a hero that's not ready to be
- 7:21Speaker 1: a hero but then goes through a hero's arc and
- 7:24Speaker 1: then comes out in the suit and realizes they have
- 7:27Speaker 1: a responsibility and the end it was disappointing. I saw
- 7:32Speaker 1: a Supergirl at the world premiere in Brooklyn at BAM
- 7:36Speaker 1: that's a Brooklyn Academy of Music. So when I was
- 7:38Speaker 1: sitting there, I was sitting there, they were cast there,
- 7:41Speaker 1: there were lots of pressed, there was clearly a lot
- 7:43Speaker 1: of fans, and from the very beginning when the opening
- 7:48Speaker 1: credits started rolling, you do get a lot of kind
- 7:51Speaker 1: of fanboyism energy where people are just clapping at the
- 7:54Speaker 1: most I named things and I'm like, all right, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: we'll see how this goes. And I noticed something curious
- 8:01Speaker 1: as the movie went on that the applause, while loud
- 8:06Speaker 1: and boisterous at the beginning, started dissipating as the movie continued,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and then to the point where where there was one
- 8:15Speaker 1: major scene that was a win for the character and
- 8:19Speaker 1: it was met with kind of feeble applause. So it
- 8:22Speaker 1: felt like the film ran out of gas at some
- 8:25Speaker 1: point with people. Again, I just don't know if people
- 8:29Speaker 1: were just tired, if it was just the weather or
- 8:31Speaker 1: what it was, but I think it was because of
- 8:36Speaker 1: this storyline. When I think about the pacing of the film,
- 8:40Speaker 1: at times, the film just felt a little long. I
- 8:44Speaker 1: do wish for such a simple plot and simple theory
- 8:48Speaker 1: that they could have probably sped it up a bit more.
- 8:51Speaker 1: There wasn't too much exposition. There were plenty of times
- 8:55Speaker 1: when people were speaking, and as mentioned, when they were
- 8:57Speaker 1: talking about Supergirl's backstory and her world and where she
- 9:01Speaker 1: came from. That was cool. I appreciate that, especially if
- 9:06Speaker 1: you're just new to the space in general, new to
- 9:08Speaker 1: the character. That was absolutely needed. Like everyone also kind
- 9:13Speaker 1: of forgets a little bit better that this is not
- 9:15Speaker 1: just oh, Supergirl as Superman's cousin. This is Supergirl's origin story.
- 9:19Speaker 1: This is Supergirl's debut film, if you will, for a
- 9:24Speaker 1: lot of people who aren't necessarily comic book fans. So
- 9:28Speaker 1: I saw the strength in that. But besides that, it
- 9:32Speaker 1: felt very routine, and I think that is disappointing for
- 9:39Speaker 1: someone like Millie Alcock, who this is her vehicle to shine,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and she still shines. It's just it could have just
- 9:46Speaker 1: been done better. Eve Ridley does a great job as Ruthie.
- 9:50Speaker 1: She's a young character, young girl that essentially befriends Supergirl,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you know, against Supergirl's will in some ways. As mentioned before,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you get to see super Man a lot than expected,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and he's his typical bubbly, kind of silly, self jovial
- 10:08Speaker 1: positive right, and then you have your flat one note
- 10:14Speaker 1: villains that don't do much besides want to be quote
- 10:18Speaker 1: evil all the time. There's no other backing for them,
- 10:22Speaker 1: There's no other rhyme or reason to them. There is
- 10:25Speaker 1: no redeeming qualities or value. They're just there. But of
- 10:30Speaker 1: course you get a little bit of a foil when
- 10:32Speaker 1: it comes to the introduction of Lobo, and I will
- 10:34Speaker 1: say fans have been waiting for this for a long time.
- 10:37Speaker 1: The ones that have from the beginning, I have one
- 10:39Speaker 1: of them saying, Jason Momoa actually should be Lobo. He
- 10:42Speaker 1: fits that character much more by way of physicality, by
- 10:46Speaker 1: way of energy. Even Jason himself has always expressed that,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you know, he loved the Lobo character. And for me,
- 10:54Speaker 1: this version of Lobo read very true to the Superman
- 10:58Speaker 1: animated series I used to come on you be kids.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I liked it. I liked him. Jason Momoa as Lobo.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I thought it made sense. It made sense obviously to
- 11:08Speaker 1: the story, into the setting in which they were. It
- 11:10Speaker 1: also made sense in his portrayal, like he was the
- 11:13Speaker 1: quintessential Lobo.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He was.
- 11:16Speaker 1: He's Lobo's not a hero, he's not an antiero, He's
- 11:19Speaker 1: not any of these things. He just is. He just
- 11:21Speaker 1: does the things he needs to do for himself. If
- 11:24Speaker 1: you happen to benefit, good for you. If you don't,
- 11:27Speaker 1: not his problem. And he rides around you know, very
- 11:30Speaker 1: rock and roll, very much doing his own thing, and
- 11:35Speaker 1: he will pop in and out of the story whenever
- 11:38Speaker 1: it made sense in the narrative, and I appreciated that.
- 11:41Speaker 1: That's fine. So I had a good time at Lobo.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I'm glad Lobo was in the film. Beyond that, I
- 11:46Speaker 1: can't really tell you anyone else was really memorable in
- 11:50Speaker 1: this movie. There was not much else to it. The
- 11:54Speaker 1: dialogue was again besides the Supergirl and me really caring
- 12:00Speaker 1: about what she had to say, what she had to do.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I kind of didn't really care about what everyone else
- 12:05Speaker 1: was saying because it just did not feel like the
- 12:10Speaker 1: writing was that strong. What they did do, and I
- 12:14Speaker 1: think they did really too much of, was the over
- 12:19Speaker 1: reliance on kind of this girl power esque theme. And
- 12:25Speaker 1: the part that bothered me was that it came off
- 12:27Speaker 1: very white, very white girl girl power, lots of you know,
- 12:35Speaker 1: specific era alternative rock music. Nothing wrong with that, but
- 12:41Speaker 1: like it was like overly done. It was like every
- 12:45Speaker 1: time there would be a fight scene, it's like, Okay,
- 12:48Speaker 1: let's load up that rock song from the eighties and
- 12:51Speaker 1: watch the fight, or let's and it was the same
- 12:56Speaker 1: thing every single time, to the point where they were
- 13:01Speaker 1: just really using it at nauseum. It was diminishing returns,
- 13:06Speaker 1: so rather than being hyped for each fight, it was like, Okay,
- 13:10Speaker 1: someone's gonna say something foul to Supergirl, somebody gonna look
- 13:13Speaker 1: at her sideways, and then some rock music gonna start
- 13:18Speaker 1: and she's gonna start banging on people. And don't get
- 13:20Speaker 1: me wrong, the banging was great. It's just it was
- 13:23Speaker 1: the same thing. There was maybe five six fight scenes
- 13:28Speaker 1: where it was literally exactly the same entry point each time,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and at some point I was just like, are we
- 13:34Speaker 1: gonna be a little bit imaginative here? The whole girl
- 13:37Speaker 1: Power thing was almost patronizing, at least to me. There
- 13:42Speaker 1: was a lot of kind of corny stuff happening, like
- 13:45Speaker 1: lots of little smirks and weird approaches to handling chapters.
- 13:52Speaker 1: The music was i you know. The soundtrack was also okay.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It was to fully enjoy it only because of the
- 14:02Speaker 1: repetitive nature of how they entered into each scene when
- 14:07Speaker 1: it was an action scene. The effects were actually really
- 14:10Speaker 1: well done. This palette for Supergirl, when you talk about
- 14:14Speaker 1: like the color scoring and everything, especially when you compare
- 14:18Speaker 1: it to Superman, is much more muted, much more dark. Yes,
- 14:22Speaker 1: she has the very colorful Supergirl suit and you get
- 14:26Speaker 1: to see her don that suit and she looks good
- 14:28Speaker 1: in it. She looks great, and as mentioned, is just
- 14:32Speaker 1: a little bit different take than what you've seen before,
- 14:36Speaker 1: which you know, for a lot of people may be welcome.
- 14:39Speaker 1: For some people they may say, oh, they're kind of
- 14:41Speaker 1: towing that line between the previous DC you. I think
- 14:45Speaker 1: it was fine. I think it looked good, and as mentioned,
- 14:49Speaker 1: the special effects still worked for me. For example, there's
- 14:53Speaker 1: a scene when Supergirl is pretty much flying through enemies
- 14:58Speaker 1: left and right, and she she's doing multiple things at
- 15:01Speaker 1: one time. She's using her eye laser blasts, she's going
- 15:06Speaker 1: in on people on super speed. You know, she's absorbing
- 15:09Speaker 1: the rays of the sun. Like there's a lot going on,
- 15:12Speaker 1: but it looks good. Like they don't do shaky cam,
- 15:16Speaker 1: they don't really cheat with the movement. You get to
- 15:19Speaker 1: generally see everything that's happening, and when you can't really
- 15:22Speaker 1: see what's going on, it's because she's using the superspeed,
- 15:25Speaker 1: or it's because it's meant to make you feel that
- 15:28Speaker 1: things are happening in the blink of an eye. And
- 15:31Speaker 1: I appreciated that so there was not overuse, but there
- 15:34Speaker 1: was use of slow mode to enhance that feature set. Now,
- 15:38Speaker 1: when we talk about special effects, you got to talk
- 15:41Speaker 1: about how her powers were illustrated on screen, and the
- 15:47Speaker 1: fact that there are clear inconsistencies with her powers that
- 15:52Speaker 1: and what they choose or not choose to affect her.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So obviously she gets her powers just like Superman from
- 16:01Speaker 1: the Yellow Sun. If she's in any other type of son,
- 16:04Speaker 1: they have their own effects, right The level by which
- 16:08Speaker 1: those effects happen, meaning the strength or intensity or speed
- 16:13Speaker 1: by which these different environmental factors have on her clearly
- 16:17Speaker 1: will change depending on where she is and what she's doing.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But it wasn't necessarily applied consistently across the board, So
- 16:25Speaker 1: I think some people might have might see that and
- 16:28Speaker 1: have a little bit of questions about that, especially her
- 16:31Speaker 1: power levels. And it's interesting. I don't know why so
- 16:35Speaker 1: many superhero films do this besides just as a narrative
- 16:39Speaker 1: plot device, but almost nerfing the character's mid action just
- 16:45Speaker 1: to deliver a plot line. For example, Supergirl is Supergirl
- 16:52Speaker 1: when she's in the Sun. Right when she's in the
- 16:54Speaker 1: Yellow Sun. You can argue about whether or not she's
- 16:57Speaker 1: strong and a superman I don't know, but that she
- 17:00Speaker 1: is to me, she got more skill level. So you
- 17:03Speaker 1: would think that the regular deglar foot soldiers, all the
- 17:07Speaker 1: low level troops that she is fighting wouldn't have much
- 17:11Speaker 1: of an effect on her, that she would toss them
- 17:12Speaker 1: in the side, And most times she does, but sometimes
- 17:15Speaker 1: a couple of them land some blows or give her
- 17:17Speaker 1: a little bit of trouble, and it's just like, well,
- 17:20Speaker 1: why would that be the case? Right, Like she's either
- 17:23Speaker 1: fully charged up or fully aware of what's going on
- 17:26Speaker 1: and ready in complete battle mode, and it's just like,
- 17:29Speaker 1: why is the scrub getting one in on her? Right?
- 17:32Speaker 1: It's not even the main bad guy? Like I don't understand,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and that's has always been a problem for me and
- 17:39Speaker 1: something that I would question. Like Supergirl, and they show
- 17:42Speaker 1: her even when she's not fully charged, if you will,
- 17:47Speaker 1: that she got a level of strength that without trying,
- 17:51Speaker 1: So when she really don't need to try, why is
- 17:55Speaker 1: she having trouble with like level one villains? I don't
- 17:58Speaker 1: I don't understand that approach. It should be an easy
- 18:02Speaker 1: sweep generally speaking, right, and when it's not that way,
- 18:06Speaker 1: especially when they established that it should be that way,
- 18:09Speaker 1: you question, ah, are they just doing this so that
- 18:12Speaker 1: the scene is ten minutes longer than it really needs
- 18:15Speaker 1: to be because the story is really simple and a
- 18:19Speaker 1: bit flat, to be honest. It's also not really entertaining
- 18:24Speaker 1: all the time. There's a couple of like smirks and
- 18:27Speaker 1: giggles here and there, but generally I was silent. And
- 18:31Speaker 1: when I say silent, I mean I wasn't really emoting
- 18:34Speaker 1: or necessarily connecting with everything that was happening on screen.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And it even showed in the audience that I was in,
- 18:40Speaker 1: because they were fairly quiet throughout the screening, especially as
- 18:45Speaker 1: it went from the middle act to the end. It
- 18:48Speaker 1: was like, not really much in terms of even the
- 18:51Speaker 1: obvious jokes, weren't really getting last and weren't really getting
- 18:56Speaker 1: reactions from myself or other people. And I wonder was
- 19:00Speaker 1: that just the pacing fatigue? Was that just things weren't
- 19:04Speaker 1: that funny. I'm not sure overall, I would have to
- 19:08Speaker 1: give Supergirl a C plus B minus. While I do
- 19:13Speaker 1: think I would tell people to go see it, because again,
- 19:18Speaker 1: Millie Alcock did an amazing job and she's a great Supergirl,
- 19:23Speaker 1: I don't know if this is the correct vehicle to
- 19:27Speaker 1: have delivered a really compelling Supergirl. It's felt almost like
- 19:33Speaker 1: you could have maybe watched it online as opposed to
- 19:37Speaker 1: watching it on the big screen, almost like a side story.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And I don't think that was the intention, and I
- 19:43Speaker 1: do think that they would need to be a much
- 19:46Speaker 1: stronger showing the next time out, and much stronger writing,
- 19:50Speaker 1: much stronger dialogue, and much stronger plot. So with that said,
- 19:56Speaker 1: you can see this and more on four oll Nerds
