- 0:32Good morning, everybody. This is Gracelyn Keller with
- 0:34the Becker's Healthcare Podcast, and we are recording
- 0:37live at the pair issues roundtable.
- 0:39I'm currently joined by Christina Ott, who is
- 0:41the chief strategy officer at Quartz. So, Christina,
- 0:44thank you so much for being here.
- 0:46Let's have you start off by introducing yourself
- 0:48and sharing a little bit more about your
- 0:49role and organization.
- 0:51Sure. Nice to meet you. Good morning, everyone.
- 0:54Again, Christina Ott, chief strategy officer at Quartz.
- 0:58We are a multiple provider sponsored health plan
- 1:00located in the Midwest in Madison, Wisconsin.
- 1:03And so very excited to be here today
- 1:05and
- 1:06work with many colleagues across industry to learn
- 1:09more about all the innovations that are disrupting
- 1:12our industry.
- 1:13Wonderful. Well, thanks for taking the time. And
- 1:15let's start our conversation
- 1:17with, from your perspective, what is the most
- 1:20pressing operational challenge facing payers right now, and
- 1:22how are you addressing it? Sure. Great question.
- 1:26Right now, one of the biggest challenges
- 1:28really simply is affordability.
- 1:31As you know, medical costs keep rising,
- 1:33regulations are getting more complex, and at the
- 1:35same time, our members expect experiences that feel
- 1:38seamless
- 1:40and better than they can get from any
- 1:41other payer. And so that makes that tricky
- 1:43from an operational perspective.
- 1:46So old levers that, payers have used, like
- 1:49utilization
- 1:50management,
- 1:51prior authorization,
- 1:52cost shifting,
- 1:53are getting more and more difficult.
- 1:56So we're really focused on changing the role
- 1:57of the payer itself.
- 1:59Instead of just processing claims, we're looking at
- 2:01the opportunity to engage our members earlier,
- 2:05supporting them with primary care, and guiding members
- 2:07to the right care at the right time.
- 2:10When you reduce confusion and friction in health
- 2:12care, you often reduce the cost as well.
- 2:14So that's where we're focusing as the real
- 2:16lever right now.
- 2:18Wonderful.
- 2:19And there's a constant tension between keeping costs
- 2:21down and actually delivering a good member experience,
- 2:24especially as it comes to care coordination.
- 2:27So how is your organization balancing cost containment
- 2:30with improving member experience and quality outcomes, and
- 2:32where are you seeing the greatest opportunity for
- 2:34impact there?
- 2:36Yeah, that's a great question. We spent a
- 2:38lot of time at our organization
- 2:40asking ourselves that.
- 2:41And where, where do our members get stuck?
- 2:44That's really the focus that we've been
- 2:47spending time on. We also wanna know when
- 2:49customers talk about us, how do they say
- 2:51Quirks makes it easy for them?
- 2:53And so that's one of the biggest outcomes
- 2:56that we're trying to create the greatest impact
- 2:58for.
- 3:00And it's really helping someone get through the
- 3:02navigation of health care, really understanding when they
- 3:05should be proactive in their health care instead
- 3:06of waiting
- 3:08until they're in an emergent situation where certainly
- 3:10we will still support them, but really helping
- 3:12them navigate across the way. When our members
- 3:15feel supported and know what to do next,
- 3:18then we have the greatest outcomes to prove
- 3:20our total cost of care, but their total
- 3:22well-being and health.
- 3:24And digital engagement and transformation continues to accelerate
- 3:27across healthcare. So what technologies
- 3:29and AI are you
- 3:31right now and where are you seeing meaningful
- 3:33ROI as well as better engagement with members?
- 3:36Yeah. That's a great question.
- 3:38We've become much more disciplined about that. I
- 3:41think there was a race around
- 3:43digitizing
- 3:44and investing in shiny tools, and we're really
- 3:47trying to, again,
- 3:48reduce the friction for our customers, but align
- 3:51our systems intentionally.
- 3:52And so that will lower the total cost
- 3:55instead of having many systems
- 3:57doing various point
- 3:59solutions that still don't create that seamless experience,
- 4:02we've been focusing there. As it relates to
- 4:05AI,
- 4:06we're probably a little bit earlier in the
- 4:08journey, but we're really focusing on automating
- 4:11workflows that are manual
- 4:13and take a lot of resources, which does
- 4:15drive costs
- 4:16to optimize
- 4:18the overall,
- 4:19output of our organization.
- 4:22And finally, where do you see the greatest
- 4:24opportunity for AI to reduce friction in member
- 4:27communications and administrative workflows while maintaining that personalization?
- 4:31That's also a great question. And as a
- 4:33provider sponsored health plan, I think we have
- 4:35a great opportunity.
- 4:37We have so many communications
- 4:38from various systems going out every single day.
- 4:41So there's two things that I try to
- 4:43focus on for simplicity's sake. One is let's
- 4:46get a streamlined view of all the touch
- 4:48points in the communications and the journey. And
- 4:51I think, you know, certainly digitization and personalization
- 4:54can help with that. And then also, how
- 4:56do we automate things from an AI perspective
- 4:59where it matters
- 5:00and really think about the human interaction where
- 5:03it matters.
- 5:04Absolutely. Well, Christina, thank you so much for
- 5:06joining me today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 5:09Again, we are at the fourth annual spring
- 5:11payer issues roundtable. Thanks so much. Thank you.
