- 1:30Speaker 2: nlfurniture dot Org. Now time for two very special guests.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The Bengals Ring of Honor began in twenty twenty one
- 1:39Speaker 2: with a quartet consisting of three Pro Football Hall of
- 1:43Speaker 2: famers Paul Brown, Anthony Munos and Ken Riley, and a
- 1:47Speaker 2: fourth player who deserves to be in Canton, Ken Anderson.
- 1:51Speaker 2: The following year, Bengals fans selected Willie Anderson and Isaac Curtis,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and last year's inductees were Boomer Assiazin and Chad Johnson.
- 2:01Speaker 2: The fourth Ring of Honor class was announced today Thursday,
- 2:06Speaker 2: July eighteenth, and features Corey Dylon and Tim Crumrae. Dylan
- 2:12Speaker 2: was the Bengals' second round pick in nineteen ninety seven
- 2:14Speaker 2: and ran for more than one thousand yards in each
- 2:17Speaker 2: of his first six seasons. Along the way, he set
- 2:21Speaker 2: two NFL records. Corey broke Jim Brown's single game rushing
- 2:25Speaker 2: record by a rookie when he ran for two forty
- 2:28Speaker 2: six against Tennessee. Three years later, he broke Walter Payton's
- 2:33Speaker 2: record for rushing yards in a game when he went
- 2:35Speaker 2: for two seventy eight against Denver. While those records have
- 2:40Speaker 2: since been broken and are currently held by Adrian Peterson,
- 2:43Speaker 2: who had a two hundred and ninety six yard game
- 2:45Speaker 2: as a rookie for Minnesota, Dylan still has two of
- 2:49Speaker 2: the top seventeen single game rushing marks in league history. Unfortunately,
- 2:56Speaker 2: the team struggled for much of Corey's time in Cincinnati,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and he wasn't always a happy camper, But those squabbles
- 3:02Speaker 2: were more than twenty years ago and don't diminish the
- 3:06Speaker 2: fact that he is among the greatest players in team history. Corey, Congratulations,
- 3:12Speaker 2: I'm being chosen for the Bengals Ring of Honor. How
- 3:15Speaker 2: did you get the news and what does this honor mean?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Well, I got a personal call from Mike Brown himself
- 3:23Speaker 3: and he said, well, Corey, we got some good news
- 3:26Speaker 3: for you, and he let me know I was going in.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Saw Dude, that was a great day. I was actually
- 3:35Speaker 3: scramming around the house. I was just about to go
- 3:37Speaker 3: to the golf range, and then as I was getting
- 3:41Speaker 3: my golf equipment, man I just checked my phone and
- 3:44Speaker 3: I've seen the message and it was from five to
- 3:47Speaker 3: one three, and I'm like, uh, who could this be?
- 3:50Speaker 4: So he left me a message.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I called him back, man, and he told me the
- 3:54Speaker 3: good news, and dude, I almost broke down that day.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Man, that was one of those days. You know what.
- 4:01Speaker 3: That wasn't great news? Great news? And ay, it was
- 4:05Speaker 3: music to my ears. So I was, I was. I
- 4:08Speaker 3: was a happy man that day. Still am still am,
- 4:11Speaker 3: to be honest with.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You, it is richly deserved. Mike Brown, since you mentioned him,
- 4:17Speaker 2: has a very interesting memory of you. He recalls watching
- 4:20Speaker 2: you at practice and when you ran by, he said
- 4:23Speaker 2: it felt like the earth moved. He says that that's
- 4:28Speaker 2: the only time that's ever happened to him as long
- 4:31Speaker 2: as he's been watching football practices. How would you describe
- 4:35Speaker 2: your running style?
- 4:37Speaker 4: Aggressive?
- 4:39Speaker 3: That's how I would call it, man, This is I mean,
- 4:42Speaker 3: growing growing up, we played street football religiously. So man,
- 4:46Speaker 3: I'm and people got to understand, Man, I got two
- 4:50Speaker 3: older brothers, so they're like five or seven years older
- 4:52Speaker 3: than me.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I'm the youngest.
- 4:55Speaker 3: So in order to play with them, guys, I had
- 4:58Speaker 3: to be a little different, you know, they're not. There
- 5:00Speaker 3: was't gonna let me play with them if I was
- 5:02Speaker 3: gonna be crying and and can't go out there and
- 5:05Speaker 3: keep up with them. So, man, I learned early so
- 5:09Speaker 3: so that that little that that being running stout definitely
- 5:13Speaker 3: comes from them and playing with the kids in the neighborhood.
- 5:17Speaker 2: We could see opponents that didn't want to tackle you
- 5:20Speaker 2: in the third and fourth quarters. Did anybody ever say
- 5:23Speaker 2: anything amusing about that? No?
- 5:26Speaker 3: No, I think that was just kind of I am
- 5:28Speaker 3: oh man, Like when when the game starts getting late, man,
- 5:33Speaker 3: I'm I'm just getting warmed up, so you know, and
- 5:37Speaker 3: it's it's all about you know. I had a bag
- 5:38Speaker 3: of tricks with me too, so I was like, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 3: maybe the first quarter, first two quarters, you know, I
- 5:44Speaker 3: dance around you for a little bit. But when them
- 5:47Speaker 3: later quarters start start start coming, man, it's it's time.
- 5:52Speaker 3: It's kind of pounding ground. And that's what I was
- 5:54Speaker 3: known for doing.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Ry. You were voted in by Bengals fans. You are
- 5:59Speaker 2: the first running back selected for the Bengals Ring of Honor.
- 6:03Speaker 2: There was a period where you weren't sure how Bengals
- 6:07Speaker 2: fans felt about you.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Correct, Correct, I mean I was. I was on my
- 6:12Speaker 3: Hyaenus for about a decade, so I just came out
- 6:17Speaker 3: my CuPy Old a year ago. So yeah, man, just
- 6:22Speaker 3: just on how things ended, you know. I mean, it
- 6:27Speaker 3: wasn't the best of terms. I mean to me, it
- 6:29Speaker 3: wasn't It wasn't all bad, but it wasn't all good.
- 6:32Speaker 3: So and then, you know, for me, just like taking
- 6:38Speaker 3: a break.
- 6:38Speaker 4: From football for a long long time.
- 6:40Speaker 3: You don't you don't know how you gotta be received.
- 6:42Speaker 3: So at first, yeah, it was I wrote for them
- 6:47Speaker 3: a couple of people of fetus, But you know, that's
- 6:49Speaker 3: that's the nature of it. I mean, until you get
- 6:52Speaker 3: to understanding where I'm coming from, and you heard me
- 6:56Speaker 3: throughout this whole year, I think people kind of warmed
- 6:59Speaker 3: up to me and kind of got where I was
- 7:01Speaker 3: coming from. And ever since then things been good.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I think people understood. Even back then, they may have
- 7:08Speaker 2: been frustrated because they didn't want you to leave, but
- 7:11Speaker 2: you had the misfortune of being on some bad teams.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It got to you.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Are all the old wounds healed.
- 7:18Speaker 4: They're done, They're done.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I mean, just just alone, I think puts everything the
- 7:26Speaker 3: rest in you know what, as far as me and
- 7:30Speaker 3: organization go. I think we're moving forward in a better,
- 7:33Speaker 3: better spot, which that's what I wanted initially. So hey,
- 7:38Speaker 3: you won't hear from me, and I definitely don't think
- 7:41Speaker 3: you hear anything from them. So it is it's water
- 7:45Speaker 3: under the bridge, man, And I'm looking forward to seeing
- 7:47Speaker 3: these young Bengals go out there and try to win
- 7:49Speaker 3: a Super Bowl.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Ory.
- 7:51Speaker 2: You enter the Bengals Ring of Honor with Tim Crumrai,
- 7:54Speaker 2: who is the Bengals defensive line coach for your first
- 7:56Speaker 2: six seasons in Cincinnati. He was known as a play
- 8:00Speaker 2: for many of the things that you were known for. Toughness, physicality, relentlessness.
- 8:05Speaker 2: What do you admire and respect about Tim krumright?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Everything? Man?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Just what you mentioned, man, and I mean me and
- 8:13Speaker 3: him done has a lot of lot of deep conversations
- 8:16Speaker 3: other than football, man, And he was always someone I respected,
- 8:22Speaker 3: always someone who would listen.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Just a sound guy. Man.
- 8:25Speaker 3: He always gave me good advice man. So other than
- 8:30Speaker 3: his football skills, man, he's a real good person. And
- 8:36Speaker 3: me and me and Crumwright had an excellent relationship. Bible
- 8:39Speaker 3: was there in Cincinnati, Corey.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Let's talk about few specific moments during your Bengals career
- 8:45Speaker 2: beginning in week fourteen of your rookie year. In the
- 8:48Speaker 2: first half of that season, you barely got the ball.
- 8:50Speaker 2: You had thirty nine carries in your first day games.
- 8:53Speaker 2: But on that Thursday night in December, you had thirty
- 8:56Speaker 2: nine carries in the game against Tennessee. You set the
- 8:59Speaker 2: rookie rushing record at the time of two hundred and
- 9:01Speaker 2: forty six yards. Do you feel like that game established
- 9:05Speaker 2: you as a force to be reckoned with in the NFL?
- 9:08Speaker 4: Hey, that was just loo.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I just felt like I was doing my job. I mean,
- 9:14Speaker 3: I don't know about a force to be wreckoning with.
- 9:17Speaker 3: You know what, I was just happy getting getting the
- 9:19Speaker 3: opportunity to go out there and play and show what
- 9:22Speaker 3: I can do. And you know what, it turned into
- 9:25Speaker 3: one of those magical moments where, you know what, we
- 9:30Speaker 3: set a record and we were just clicking. Man, everything
- 9:34Speaker 3: was working. Take nothing away from Tennessee. I think there
- 9:38Speaker 3: were probably the third rate defense in the league. So
- 9:44Speaker 3: it wasn't easy, but that night we made it seem
- 9:48Speaker 3: a little easy. So and you know, the guys up front,
- 9:52Speaker 3: the Hags up front was man just giving me opportunities
- 9:54Speaker 3: to run wild.
- 9:55Speaker 4: And I took advantage of it.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I went back and watched the game. Se the offensive
- 10:01Speaker 2: line react when you broke the record was really cool
- 10:05Speaker 2: because they were so fired up to be part of it.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I mean, you know what, because we didn't even know
- 10:13Speaker 3: we were embarking on a record and Tod we were
- 10:16Speaker 3: over on the sideline and they were like, yeah, you're
- 10:20Speaker 3: close to a record, and I was like, well, hell,
- 10:22Speaker 3: let's go back in.
- 10:22Speaker 4: There try to get it.
- 10:24Speaker 3: So as well at that point, everybody knew the situation,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and you know what, they were just as fired up
- 10:30Speaker 3: as I was trying trying to chase down that record
- 10:33Speaker 3: mand and we got it. And dude, that was special
- 10:38Speaker 3: moment between not only me and the whole team, but
- 10:42Speaker 3: that offensive line and those offensive players. Man, something I
- 10:46Speaker 3: remember a lifetime, to be honest with you.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So you broke Jim Brown's record that night, and then
- 10:52Speaker 2: three years later, you broke the record for most rushing
- 10:55Speaker 2: yards in a single game that had been held for
- 10:57Speaker 2: more than twenty years by Walter Payton.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It was an amazing day.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It was the first game that the Bengals won at
- 11:03Speaker 2: then new Paul Brown Stadium exactly. The team was zero
- 11:07Speaker 2: and six at the time, you're facing an excellent Denver
- 11:09Speaker 2: team that wound up going eleven and five. They had
- 11:12Speaker 2: a top ten rushing defense, and you went for two
- 11:15Speaker 2: hundred and seventy eight yards. What are your most vivid
- 11:18Speaker 2: memories of that day?
- 11:19Speaker 4: You know what it felt like.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I know when you hear when athletes say like in
- 11:25Speaker 3: the zone, That's how I kind of felt.
- 11:27Speaker 4: You know.
- 11:28Speaker 3: It felt like everything was moving slow and I was
- 11:32Speaker 3: moving at a different pace than everybody else. And I
- 11:38Speaker 3: kind of noticed it early, like, you know, they were
- 11:41Speaker 3: over pursuing heavily. So what I would do is, you
- 11:45Speaker 3: know what, start in one direction and if I see
- 11:48Speaker 3: a cutback ray man, I'm gonna take it.
- 11:51Speaker 4: And it was working.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I mean by the time I cut back, man, the
- 11:54Speaker 3: holes were so wide up and I was just running
- 11:57Speaker 3: for daylight.
- 11:57Speaker 4: So it worked the whole game. It turned out to
- 12:02Speaker 4: be one of those.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Games again where you know what, up front, we were
- 12:07Speaker 3: gaping holes and all I had to do was just,
- 12:09Speaker 3: you know, make one cut and try to make it
- 12:11Speaker 3: happen to me.
- 12:12Speaker 2: It's one of those accomplishments that actually gets more remarkable
- 12:17Speaker 2: as time goes by. Because the Bengals had no passing
- 12:20Speaker 2: attack that day. Two pass completions in fourteen attempts in
- 12:24Speaker 2: the entire game. You had five runs in that game
- 12:28Speaker 2: of thirty or more yards. The Bengals had two all
- 12:31Speaker 2: of last year. You had five in that game. Does
- 12:35Speaker 2: it add to the satisfaction for you that the Broncos
- 12:39Speaker 2: knew what was coming and couldn't stop it.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, So, I mean that was that was us, Like.
- 12:47Speaker 3: We're gonna run the ball. You know, we're gonna run
- 12:50Speaker 3: the ball, and if you stop was a good job.
- 12:54Speaker 3: But you know what, we're gonna keep coming at you.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So and and that was our attitude, that was our identity.
- 13:00Speaker 3: That's offensive line.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Knew that.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I knew that, Like, yeah, we're gonna face some eight
- 13:05Speaker 3: to nine men front all the time, but and man,
- 13:09Speaker 3: we're gonna go out there try to endure our best
- 13:11Speaker 3: and try to get the win.
- 13:13Speaker 4: So it turned out good on that day. It turned
- 13:16Speaker 4: out real good that day.
- 13:17Speaker 3: So yeah, and all the success I had, man, it's
- 13:23Speaker 3: it's more it's more team success than anything, man, because
- 13:26Speaker 3: you know what, we were all prepared, We all knew
- 13:29Speaker 3: the situation and and none of us waivered. We knew
- 13:33Speaker 3: what we were, what we was gonna face going out there
- 13:36Speaker 3: and you know what, we got the job done.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I'll never forget the visual of you at the end
- 13:43Speaker 2: of that game on the sideline. You're on your knees,
- 13:46Speaker 2: your helmets on the ground, you appear to be sobbing.
- 13:49Speaker 2: What were your emotions in that moment.
- 13:53Speaker 3: I don't believe it, Like it didn't even it didn't
- 13:55Speaker 3: even appear to me. I had the many yards, you know,
- 14:02Speaker 3: I wasn't tired. I was just like, you know what,
- 14:04Speaker 3: I was more focused on winning the game than anything else.
- 14:08Speaker 3: So actually after that last run, coming to the sideline
- 14:12Speaker 3: and I see it, I see it on the jumble
- 14:14Speaker 3: trun and I'm like, oh wow, you know wow, that's unbelievable.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And then you know, and then I kind of felt
- 14:21Speaker 3: some type of way because I know, walk just passed
- 14:23Speaker 3: that year, and to me, man in a weird way, man,
- 14:29Speaker 3: I felt like some records don't need to be broken,
- 14:33Speaker 3: you know, and why me type things? So I was
- 14:37Speaker 3: always I was overwhelmed and emotional. But you know what,
- 14:41Speaker 3: ay turned out we got that that that win, that
- 14:46Speaker 3: was that was number one. We got the win and
- 14:49Speaker 3: then in the process we we accomplished a great record.
- 14:53Speaker 3: So that was That was a great day.
- 14:56Speaker 2: You got to seventy eight on only twenty two carries.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Ten of those carries were for two yards or less.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Do you ever look back and think, man, if I
- 15:05Speaker 2: had had thirty, I would have set a record that
- 15:07Speaker 2: would have never been broken.
- 15:09Speaker 3: That part, that part, and I do recall there was
- 15:17Speaker 3: one carry call back where I it was a thirty
- 15:20Speaker 3: yard game. So realistically, in my mind that could have
- 15:24Speaker 3: been like twenty three carries for three h eight something,
- 15:28Speaker 3: you know, something ridiculous like that three eighteen who knows?
- 15:33Speaker 3: So unfortunate that, you know what, we broke the record
- 15:38Speaker 3: as a team. I think we had like four hundred
- 15:40Speaker 3: and seven yards rushing.
- 15:42Speaker 4: That day and ultimately, man, we got the win.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Man, that's that the win starting off four to six
- 15:52Speaker 3: and getting your first win the other season in that
- 15:55Speaker 3: fashion amazing.
- 15:58Speaker 2: You actually did not have the longest run by the
- 16:01Speaker 2: Bengals in that game.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Peter Warwick had like an eighty yard.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely absolutely.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Corey Dylan is our guest. I am a firm believer
- 16:13Speaker 2: that you should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 16:15Speaker 2: I've made that case on this podcast before. You ran
- 16:18Speaker 2: for more than eleven thousand yards two of the best
- 16:21Speaker 2: games in history, you won a Super Bowl? Ring are
- 16:24Speaker 2: you hopeful that this honor might help?
- 16:27Speaker 4: Absolutely?
- 16:28Speaker 3: You know what? The funny thing. The funny thing about
- 16:31Speaker 3: it is, I was talking. I was talking to Adrian
- 16:34Speaker 3: Ross and Joey Porter. We was all on the line
- 16:37Speaker 3: one day and he said something to me that and
- 16:40Speaker 3: it struck me.
- 16:41Speaker 4: It was like, and we were talking about the we
- 16:44Speaker 4: were talking about the Hall.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Of Fame thing as well, and he said, how are
- 16:50Speaker 3: you supposed to get into the Pro Football Hall of
- 16:54Speaker 3: Fame when your own team doesn't hony, you know what
- 16:57Speaker 3: I mean? And I sat there and I thought about
- 16:59Speaker 3: it was like, damn, we got an excellent point. That
- 17:03Speaker 3: is there is true to that. So for this to
- 17:07Speaker 3: be actually happened for me, I think, I think it's
- 17:10Speaker 3: a it's a boost.
- 17:11Speaker 4: It definitely helps the case.
- 17:15Speaker 3: And and I hope, I hope.
- 17:18Speaker 4: I'm hopeful.
- 17:20Speaker 3: I'm hopeful that you know, this process will shed some
- 17:25Speaker 3: light to everybody case, I mean all the Bangles at least,
- 17:30Speaker 3: I mean, uh man, there's a lot of great players
- 17:32Speaker 3: that played for the Cincinnati Bengals. I don't I don't
- 17:37Speaker 3: know what the hold up is as far as getting
- 17:40Speaker 3: in but there's a lot of there's a lot of
- 17:44Speaker 3: us sitting there like trying to figure out the process
- 17:48Speaker 3: and hopefully hopefully we get in and see it, you
- 17:53Speaker 3: know what I mean that part of it. So yeah,
- 17:56Speaker 3: I think this this Elizabeth by starting it, Man, it's
- 18:02Speaker 3: that was great, man, This is this is this whole process. Yeah,
- 18:06Speaker 3: it may not happen when I wanted to happen, but
- 18:08Speaker 3: it happened right, and it's only it's only a plus
- 18:12Speaker 3: of helping us get that out of his jacket as well.
- 18:16Speaker 3: So yeah, I love it. I think it was a
- 18:18Speaker 3: great idea. I'm thankful they started it. And we'll see
- 18:25Speaker 3: you definitely see.
- 18:27Speaker 2: We talked about Tim Crumrai, your fellow twenty twenty four
- 18:31Speaker 2: inductee a little bit earlier. You also played with three
- 18:33Speaker 2: other members of the Bengals Ring of Honor. Right going
- 18:37Speaker 2: to ask you to share some thoughts about each of them,
- 18:39Speaker 2: beginning with your teammate, your rookie year Boomer asiasin.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Man Ah Man, he said something to me, Man that
- 18:45Speaker 3: I will never forget. Yeah, and.
- 18:50Speaker 4: It drove me, It kept me going. He was like,
- 18:55Speaker 4: he said, this is what he said to me.
- 18:56Speaker 3: He said, Corey, it doesn't matter around you when then
- 19:01Speaker 3: what matters is what you do while you're here. And
- 19:04Speaker 3: I just looked at him. I looked at him and
- 19:06Speaker 3: was like, Man, damn.
- 19:07Speaker 4: You're right.
- 19:10Speaker 3: You're absolutely right, and you know, so there's something that
- 19:15Speaker 3: I was like, Man, hey, do what you gotta do
- 19:18Speaker 3: right now. You know, it doesn't matter what brown you
- 19:20Speaker 3: went in. So that kind of that kind of put
- 19:23Speaker 3: things in perspective for me and I had ever since then,
- 19:26Speaker 3: me and Boomer been been real cool.
- 19:29Speaker 4: We used to run a second team together, so too.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Hey.
- 19:33Speaker 3: We kind of got our start at the same time
- 19:36Speaker 3: in ninety seven, Man, and and we went on a
- 19:39Speaker 3: great run Man, and it was it was It was
- 19:42Speaker 3: fun being a part of that.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Man. I wish you could have played more with us.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I definitely do. Man.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I was my rookie year was amazing, and I had
- 19:52Speaker 3: that guy leading us, leading us to the promised Land
- 19:56Speaker 3: that that that year, Man was something I always remember.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And he spoke from experience where the draft was concerned
- 20:03Speaker 2: because he was the second round pick and was pissed
- 20:06Speaker 2: off about it the rest of the career. And you
- 20:10Speaker 2: had the same chip on your shoulder from last year.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Round too, Yeah, Man, So a great guy, great leader,
- 20:18Speaker 3: man of wisdom as you can see. And man, it
- 20:22Speaker 3: was it was just fun fun being a part of
- 20:25Speaker 3: that man. Like I said, Man, I wish we could
- 20:29Speaker 3: have got a couple more years out of boom. Who
- 20:32Speaker 3: knows what happened in ninety eight, Man, But I'm always
- 20:36Speaker 3: enjoy and chairs that time and the opportunity I got
- 20:39Speaker 3: to play with that guy.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Man, one special.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Dude, former teammate number two in the Ring of Honor,
- 20:44Speaker 2: your close friend and one of the guys who paid
- 20:47Speaker 2: the way for you, Willie Anderson.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Ah. Man, Dude, what can I say about this guy? Man?
- 20:53Speaker 4: An awesome dude.
- 20:55Speaker 3: And hey, man, even in retirement, he's still opening opening
- 20:59Speaker 3: up holes for me. So Man, one great guy, ultimate
- 21:04Speaker 3: ultimate leader, great great guy to know. And dude, I'm
- 21:11Speaker 3: I'm I'm just honored to be even you know, I'm
- 21:14Speaker 3: I'm in there with these guys now, man.
- 21:16Speaker 4: And and it's well deserving. Man.
- 21:18Speaker 3: He deserves his he deserved his arm his Hall of
- 21:22Speaker 3: Fame rights too.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Man.
- 21:24Speaker 3: We were we're in this boat together. Man, we're trying
- 21:27Speaker 3: to figure a way to get to the get to
- 21:29Speaker 3: the finish line.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Man.
- 21:31Speaker 3: And for a guy to have every box and everything
- 21:35Speaker 3: checked right.
- 21:37Speaker 4: It's disappointed.
- 21:38Speaker 3: It's disappointing not seeing him get in there like everybody
- 21:44Speaker 3: knows he should. So I'm I'm an advocate for him.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I believe he's he should have been in there. And
- 21:54Speaker 3: like I said, he's he's been paving the way.
- 21:56Speaker 4: For a long long time, just on and.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Off the field for the Bengals. Man, he should be
- 22:04Speaker 3: honored in every aspect.
- 22:06Speaker 2: He's been a Hall of Fame finalist the last three years.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I think his day is coming, hopefully next year. There
- 22:12Speaker 2: weren't any offensive lineman pick this year this year, so
- 22:15Speaker 2: I think they will include an offensive lineman next year,
- 22:17Speaker 2: and it should be Willie. How hard did Willy work
- 22:22Speaker 2: to try to help convince you that Cincinnati Bengals and
- 22:26Speaker 2: the city of Cincinnati had great feelings about you and
- 22:29Speaker 2: that it would be good to reconnect with the franchise
- 22:31Speaker 2: in some way.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Oh, Man, if it wasn't for will I don't know, man, seriously, seriously, man,
- 22:39Speaker 3: Me and him talk, Me and him talk for a
- 22:41Speaker 3: long long time. Man, And it was him, it was
- 22:45Speaker 3: him who who convinced me, like, Cory is not what
- 22:51Speaker 3: you think. So and you know what, I took his
- 22:54Speaker 3: word for it, and I'm glad. I'm glad I took
- 22:58Speaker 3: his word for it.
- 22:59Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:00Speaker 3: So yeah, man, if it wasn't if it was for
- 23:04Speaker 3: Will reaching out and we having the deep conversations of
- 23:08Speaker 3: everything and you know, just just being us, having our
- 23:13Speaker 3: men and men talk.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Yeah, Man, who knows Man, So I owe him a lot,
- 23:19Speaker 4: o him a lot.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Your third former teammate that's in the Ring of honor,
- 23:24Speaker 2: Chad Johnson.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Oh, Man, I guess said Chad something else? Man, I
- 23:30Speaker 3: could get two words out of that guy. What when
- 23:32Speaker 3: I like, look at look at this man. Now, look
- 23:36Speaker 3: at him. Man, I'm so proud of him. Man. Everything
- 23:39Speaker 3: he's doing on and off the field, man is such
- 23:41Speaker 3: a such a beacon.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Man.
- 23:43Speaker 3: He's doing him and he's enjoying his life. Man, and
- 23:47Speaker 3: that's what it's all about. So Chad, from where he
- 23:53Speaker 3: started to where he's at now, I'm man, unbelievable, one
- 23:57Speaker 3: remarkable person, hell of a person as everybody knows. And
- 24:02Speaker 3: real cool dude. I mean we always been. We always
- 24:07Speaker 3: been cool, every single one of the us. We always
- 24:09Speaker 3: been cool, even though life took us on our different journeys.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Man.
- 24:14Speaker 3: At the end of the day, man, we all respect
- 24:17Speaker 3: each other's game and and respect each other as people.
- 24:21Speaker 3: So I'm I'm truly honored. I'm truly honored to be
- 24:27Speaker 3: going in after these guys.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Man. So yeah, man, it's gonna be a great day.
- 24:33Speaker 2: On the twenty thirty, After seven years in Cincinnati, you
- 24:36Speaker 2: get traded to the Patriots. Your first year with New England,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you set their single season rushing record. You still hold
- 24:42Speaker 2: that record. You won a super Bowl under Bill Belichick.
- 24:45Speaker 2: What did that season mean? After the tough times that
- 24:48Speaker 2: you would endure it up till then?
- 24:51Speaker 3: Oh man, it was just well, as you know, I
- 24:55Speaker 3: was hurt, so the year before I was hurt.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Man, it was just like.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Me coming back and being healthy and lasting the whole
- 25:05Speaker 3: year was satisfying to me. And then to top it off,
- 25:08Speaker 3: you know what, not knowing what to expect, and I
- 25:12Speaker 3: don't think people know how difficult it is like going
- 25:15Speaker 3: to a team that just won the Super Bowl. The
- 25:18Speaker 3: expectations is super high and you kind of you get
- 25:24Speaker 3: the feel of like you gotta you gotta integrate yourself
- 25:28Speaker 3: in the whole new system and.
- 25:30Speaker 4: And fill it out. Man. Was nothing. There was nothing
- 25:33Speaker 4: easy about that whatsoever.
- 25:35Speaker 3: So you know what, it turned out to be one
- 25:39Speaker 3: hell of a run and you know, actually getting up
- 25:42Speaker 3: there man, and integrating with them guys and learning their
- 25:45Speaker 3: ways and getting comfortable with the system. And dude, we
- 25:50Speaker 3: went on a run want to run and actually won
- 25:52Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. Kind of it mundicated the whole oh
- 25:58Speaker 3: three year where I was I was hurting and beat down.
- 26:00Speaker 3: I couldn't I couldn't go out there and prove my
- 26:03Speaker 3: point because of injury. So I think that made up
- 26:07Speaker 3: for the year I was hurt.
- 26:11Speaker 4: I let O three go.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I had to let that go. I mean, I was
- 26:14Speaker 3: rewarded and oh for I will take it.
- 26:17Speaker 2: You helped Tom Brady win one of the seven Super Bowls,
- 26:20Speaker 2: and back then he wasn't the goat as we think
- 26:23Speaker 2: of him now. I mean you were the heart and
- 26:26Speaker 2: soul of the offense of that twenty fourteen Hey.
- 26:29Speaker 4: But nobody will tell you that. No.
- 26:33Speaker 3: You know what we gotta saying, man, just doing doing
- 26:37Speaker 3: your job, man, And honestly, that's what I That's what
- 26:41Speaker 3: I was doing, man.
- 26:43Speaker 4: It's it's the way they lay it out for you,
- 26:45Speaker 4: is hey.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Man, everybody just worry about doing their job and everything
- 26:50Speaker 3: to be take care of himself and for the most part.
- 26:53Speaker 3: That's what we all did. But at the end of
- 26:56Speaker 3: the day, we all held each other accountable. So it
- 27:01Speaker 3: worked out to you know what. We fourteen and two
- 27:05Speaker 3: in the regular season. Then we went on the the
- 27:08Speaker 3: playoff runs against we got you know, super super talented
- 27:13Speaker 3: team with the coachs. We asked them out and then
- 27:17Speaker 3: we was in a heavyweight fight with the Steelers and
- 27:21Speaker 3: we got past them. They rumped us pretty good in
- 27:23Speaker 3: the regular season, so actually go up the hindsfield and
- 27:28Speaker 3: get some redemption up there with sweet and then you
- 27:32Speaker 3: know what, played a one tough, sound football team in Philly.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I mean, any red coach team is gonna be good
- 27:45Speaker 3: on both sides, man, and we squeaked one out by
- 27:49Speaker 3: a field goal down in Jacksonville. So you know what,
- 27:53Speaker 3: it brought my whole career, that little six year old
- 27:56Speaker 3: kid running around visualizing winning a Super Bowl, like every
- 28:01Speaker 3: level I've been through, winning that Super Bowl kind of
- 28:04Speaker 3: took care of all that. Everything I went through, good
- 28:07Speaker 3: and bad. It was in that one moment. One moment
- 28:11Speaker 3: solidified everything for me. So yeah, man, it was it
- 28:15Speaker 3: was It was special. It was a special moment for me.
- 28:19Speaker 2: For your last game was an AFC Championship game in
- 28:21Speaker 2: two thousand and seven. You retired at thirty two. I'm
- 28:26Speaker 2: sure you could have kept going. Why did you stop then?
- 28:30Speaker 4: Just tired? I was tired, man.
- 28:32Speaker 3: I mean at some point, man, I you know, even
- 28:36Speaker 3: going into that that that last year, I was I
- 28:39Speaker 3: was even I was contemplating, like, you know what, if
- 28:43Speaker 3: I get through this whole year healthy, man, I'm gonna
- 28:45Speaker 3: have to start making a decision, because, you know what,
- 28:48Speaker 3: there's more to life than football. So and I mean
- 28:53Speaker 3: like football has consumed majority of my life. I'm like
- 28:58Speaker 3: I hadn't accomplished a lot, and I wish I could
- 29:02Speaker 3: have went out with another Super Bowl.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Man.
- 29:05Speaker 3: I wish we were so close. Man, we were so close.
- 29:10Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure would we would have whooped the Bears
- 29:12Speaker 3: too or whatever whoever they played the coach I think
- 29:14Speaker 3: it was the Bears.
- 29:16Speaker 4: I wish I would have got out of there with
- 29:17Speaker 4: another woman, but it wasn't in my cards.
- 29:20Speaker 6: Man.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I just felt like, you know what, this is the
- 29:23Speaker 3: best time to step away from me. I mean, keep playing,
- 29:28Speaker 3: keep playing long enough and over overstaying your You're welcome, man,
- 29:35Speaker 3: You're gonna catch your injury.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Man.
- 29:36Speaker 3: So I've been fortunate enough and blessed enough that I
- 29:40Speaker 3: didn't really have no major injuries, and I just thought
- 29:43Speaker 3: it was the right time for me, and time to
- 29:46Speaker 3: go home and be with my young guarters and rebuild yourself,
- 29:50Speaker 3: you know, you know, find some find something else that
- 29:55Speaker 3: gave you, gave you that passion to want to be great.
- 29:58Speaker 3: So yeah, man, And as you can see, it took
- 30:03Speaker 3: me to last year to go.
- 30:06Speaker 4: To come back.
- 30:07Speaker 3: So I've been okay, man, I've just been trying to
- 30:11Speaker 3: be normal Corey and try to live my life accordantly
- 30:14Speaker 3: and man, and they keep my health up good and
- 30:19Speaker 3: things of that nature. Man, So it's been it's been
- 30:22Speaker 3: one hell of a journey. I wouldn't I wouldn't change anything.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I wouldn't change nothing, nothing about it.
- 30:28Speaker 2: How closely do you follow the Bengals now? And what
- 30:31Speaker 2: do you think A Burrow?
- 30:33Speaker 4: Oh?
- 30:33Speaker 3: Man, dude, thank you, thank you, mister Burrow. I'm gonna
- 30:38Speaker 3: tell you what man, I and I told I told
- 30:41Speaker 3: some others about this man. That man has literally changed
- 30:45Speaker 3: the perception of the Bengals by himself. So just for
- 30:52Speaker 3: that man, keep doing you, Joe, seriously, man, he's one
- 30:56Speaker 3: helbl of quarterback. I believe he will lead to the
- 31:00Speaker 3: Super Bowl soon. So and I can't wait for that day.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Man.
- 31:05Speaker 3: So I love the young man. Want to help a player,
- 31:09Speaker 3: great competitor, great leader. And you know what, me and me,
- 31:16Speaker 3: me and some of the old teammates. Man, we're sitting back.
- 31:19Speaker 3: We're just we're having fun seeing these young guys go
- 31:22Speaker 3: out there and and and and and put in work.
- 31:25Speaker 4: So it's it's awesome to see.
- 31:29Speaker 2: What was it like for you to watch Super Bowl
- 31:31Speaker 2: fifty six? Were you screaming at the TV when the
- 31:33Speaker 2: Bengals said took on the Rams?
- 31:35Speaker 5: Oh?
- 31:35Speaker 4: Man, I was.
- 31:36Speaker 3: It was a nailby I Man, I got anxiety. I
- 31:39Speaker 3: was like, man, come on, let's go, let's go. So
- 31:43Speaker 3: I know the magnitude of winning one, what it would
- 31:47Speaker 3: mean for the for the Bengals, So yeah, man, I was.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I was rooting for them, harm and it was very disappointing.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Comes down to the last play man and in the
- 31:56Speaker 3: Rams edge of Mountain.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Man.
- 31:57Speaker 3: So I was heartbroken. But I you what, man, We're
- 32:00Speaker 3: gonna have many more opportunities to get one.
- 32:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 2: The Bengals all time leading rusher, you have the most
- 32:07Speaker 2: one hundred yard rushing performances, you have the longest run,
- 32:10Speaker 2: the ninety six yard touchdown run against Detroit. Is there
- 32:15Speaker 2: anything of all of the accolades that means the most
- 32:18Speaker 2: to you?
- 32:19Speaker 4: You know what sticks out to me? Man?
- 32:21Speaker 3: And this and this shows the character of the team
- 32:25Speaker 3: and my teammates.
- 32:28Speaker 4: I think.
- 32:29Speaker 3: I think Baltimore was like on a fifty three gang
- 32:34Speaker 3: streak of not allowing one hundred yard rusher. Me and
- 32:38Speaker 3: the boys went down there and broke that, man, and
- 32:41Speaker 3: that sticks out to me. Of like, and now, listen,
- 32:46Speaker 3: in those fifty games the Ravens back then were they, man,
- 32:50Speaker 3: they were tough at they're stingy, they played. They seen
- 32:54Speaker 3: a lot of great running backs in that fifty game stretch.
- 33:00Speaker 3: And for us to go actually down into Baltimore work
- 33:04Speaker 3: and go down there, I know we took a loss,
- 33:09Speaker 3: but hell, for us to go down there, show up,
- 33:11Speaker 3: break they street. That sticks out to me. That that
- 33:15Speaker 3: show's character, you know what I mean? So that sticks out,
- 33:20Speaker 3: that sticks out the most. Yeah, I know, I got
- 33:22Speaker 3: the two forty six and the two seventy eights and
- 33:25Speaker 3: this and that, I that sticks out more than of
- 33:29Speaker 3: it to me.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Marvin Lewis was the defensive coordinator of those Baltimore teams.
- 33:36Speaker 4: Right right, Oh hey, trust me, I let them know
- 33:38Speaker 4: what when you got.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I'm sure you did.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I let them know. I let them know.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Your girls were young. I think your your oldest daughter
- 33:50Speaker 2: was just born around the time that you ran for
- 33:53Speaker 2: two seventy eight.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Yeses around three? Okay sound three? Yeah?
- 33:59Speaker 1: Does this, Honor?
- 34:01Speaker 2: Hey, you know, help you make the case to your
- 34:03Speaker 2: girls that see, dad was one heck of a player.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Hey, hey, hey, yeah, I'm I tell them all the time,
- 34:11Speaker 3: your dad was pretty good. I know you wasn't that.
- 34:15Speaker 3: I know you wouldn't, I said. I mean, I mean,
- 34:18Speaker 3: I said, you better go check out them highlights. Oh Dad,
- 34:21Speaker 3: I'm not gonna do that. So no, I don't they
- 34:26Speaker 3: they understand the My oldest definitely understand the magnitude of
- 34:31Speaker 3: getting into this ring, Honor. Not only that, I mean
- 34:34Speaker 3: just just my family, like my brothers and my whole
- 34:37Speaker 3: supporting cast. They they know like, this is this is
- 34:41Speaker 3: big time, this is this is it man, And you've
- 34:47Speaker 3: been waiting on this, this is what you've been waiting on.
- 34:50Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think people will get like you
- 34:53Speaker 3: don't get it sometimes until you it takes until you retire,
- 34:56Speaker 3: you you start looking back on all the great things
- 34:59Speaker 3: you did and some things you did wrong and all this,
- 35:03Speaker 3: and you start putting your own career into perspective. Man,
- 35:08Speaker 3: this this is solidifying my legacy and I and I
- 35:11Speaker 3: love it. This is this is this is one step
- 35:15Speaker 3: to getting that getting that that other jacket as well.
- 35:19Speaker 4: So we're all happy.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Man, That Dylan clan is can't be more happier than
- 35:26Speaker 3: they are right now.
- 35:27Speaker 4: So yeah, I wish my mom was here to see it.
- 35:31Speaker 5: Man.
- 35:31Speaker 3: I know she's looking down and and she's smiling too.
- 35:34Speaker 3: So it's gonna be a great It's gonna be a
- 35:37Speaker 3: great day on the twenty thirty.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Absolutely, Corey, this has been great.
- 35:42Speaker 1: I really appreciate your time.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Congratulations on this well deserved honner, and we look forward
- 35:46Speaker 2: to seeing you at halftime of that game at pay
- 35:48Speaker 2: Course Stadium.
- 35:49Speaker 5: Oh.
- 35:49Speaker 4: I will be there. Just indeed, thank you.
- 35:55Speaker 2: As I said in that interview, I believe that Corey
- 35:58Speaker 2: Dylan belongs in the profile Ball Hall of Fame. He's
- 36:01Speaker 2: twentieth all time in rushing yards, ranking ahead of several
- 36:05Speaker 2: Hall of famers including OJ Simpson, Earl Campbell, Terrell Davis,
- 36:09Speaker 2: and Floyd Little. In fact, Corey ran for nearly five
- 36:13Speaker 2: thousand more yards than Little. He's a four time Pro bowler,
- 36:17Speaker 2: a Super Bowl champion, holds the career rushing record for
- 36:21Speaker 2: the Bengals and the single season rushing record for the Patriots. Yes,
- 36:25Speaker 2: Corey rubbed some people the wrong way during his playing career,
- 36:29Speaker 2: but the Hall of Fame shouldn't be a popularity contest.
- 36:32Speaker 2: The stats don't lie, and Corey's rank with the best
- 36:36Speaker 2: running backs to ever play. The Bengals Booth Podcast is

- 37:18Speaker 2: draft lasted for twelve rounds back in nineteen eighty three,
- 37:21Speaker 2: and Cincinnati selected Tim in round ten with pick number
- 37:25Speaker 2: two seventy six. Overall, he ranks among the greatest late
- 37:30Speaker 2: round steals in NFL history. Crumrie was a two time
- 37:34Speaker 2: pro bowler who earned first team All Pro honors in
- 37:37Speaker 2: nineteen eighty eight, and the Bengals might have won the
- 37:40Speaker 2: Super Bowl that year if Tim didn't break his leg
- 37:43Speaker 2: in four places on the forty nine ers second offensive possession. Remarkably,
- 37:49Speaker 2: he was back in time for the season opener the
- 37:52Speaker 2: next year, and other than a couple of games with
- 37:54Speaker 2: replacement players during the nineteen eighty seven player strike, Crumrie
- 37:59Speaker 2: played in all one hundred and ninety three regular season
- 38:03Speaker 2: in playoff games that he could have appeared in in
- 38:06Speaker 2: his twelve NFL seasons, Tim, Bengals fans have spoken, they
- 38:12Speaker 2: have selected you for the Ring of Honor. What was
- 38:15Speaker 2: your reaction when you got the news.
- 38:17Speaker 6: Well, it's amazing coming from Mike Brown. I knew it
- 38:19Speaker 6: was Mike Brown calling right away, but we had little
- 38:22Speaker 6: trouble getting through. But finally we got through to Mike
- 38:24Speaker 6: and he said congratulations, and he's so proud of me
- 38:26Speaker 6: because his family for a long time. No, but it's
- 38:29Speaker 6: a great honor to be part of this deal, and
- 38:31Speaker 6: it's gonna be exciting, get a bunch of family coming in,
- 38:33Speaker 6: and it's going to be a great thing for the
- 38:35Speaker 6: city and my fans. I think the fans are great.
- 38:37Speaker 6: And thank you for once again the fans for doing it.
- 38:39Speaker 6: And then basically, thank you very much for the Brown family.
- 38:42Speaker 6: They are family to me. We have a lot of
- 38:45Speaker 6: history backing over the years, so it's so thank you
- 38:47Speaker 6: for them too.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Let's turn the clock back to the nineteen eighty three
- 38:52Speaker 2: NFL Draft, known as maybe the greatest quarterback draft of
- 38:56Speaker 2: all time, John Lway, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, and others.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Despite your college football Hall of Fame career at Wisconsin,
- 39:03Speaker 2: you lasted until round ten. Were you pissed? Were you confused?
- 39:09Speaker 2: What was going through your mind?
- 39:10Speaker 5: All the above?
- 39:12Speaker 6: Well, it was one of those deals that unfortunately I
- 39:14Speaker 6: was drafting the tenth round, too short, too slow, and
- 39:17Speaker 6: too late. Well, you can't judge heart and desire, and
- 39:20Speaker 6: I had to ship on my shoulder from day one
- 39:22Speaker 6: because I was drafted too late.
- 39:23Speaker 5: I thought I was going to go a lot earlier.
- 39:25Speaker 6: But I had some good people that saw me, dickle Bow,
- 39:29Speaker 6: Paul Brown, those people seen me play before and then
- 39:32Speaker 6: they picked me late.
- 39:33Speaker 5: But the rest is history.
- 39:35Speaker 2: I guess the Bengals first round pick that year was
- 39:38Speaker 2: Dave Remington, the center out of Nebraska. To this day,
- 39:42Speaker 2: the Dave Remington Award goes to the best center in
- 39:44Speaker 2: college football. You famously made his life a living hell
- 39:49Speaker 2: in that first training camp. What were you out to prove?
- 39:53Speaker 5: Actually it was the Oklahoma drills.
- 39:54Speaker 6: It was a tenth round pick, goings against number one,
- 39:57Speaker 6: and I didn't get a turn, didn't get a turn,
- 39:58Speaker 6: and then I turned to Jim McClair.
- 40:02Speaker 5: He hold on cowboy, hold on last one. Dave Vermonton
- 40:06Speaker 5: went up. I went up.
- 40:08Speaker 6: I had a good wrestling move, took him over backwards
- 40:11Speaker 6: and Forrest Greg started yelling to go again, go again.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Did it three times?
- 40:15Speaker 6: So if I made an impact on Dave Evermont to
- 40:16Speaker 6: the number one pick, I think I had a good
- 40:18Speaker 6: shot at making a team.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Dave Lapham says, you treated every practice like it was
- 40:25Speaker 2: a game. You had no neutral gear. What was your
- 40:28Speaker 2: thinking where practice was concerned.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Well, practice was part of the game for me because
- 40:33Speaker 6: I thought if I practice half speed, I'd play half speed.
- 40:36Speaker 6: It was Friday Temple. I have no Friday Temple. Yeah,
- 40:38Speaker 6: Friday Temple. Leave me in the locker room. No Friday.
- 40:41Speaker 5: But that was part of the That was part of
- 40:43Speaker 5: the thing.
- 40:44Speaker 6: And I want to say one thing before I get
- 40:45Speaker 6: too far into this about me practicing against Dave Lapham.
- 40:51Speaker 6: All those fine alignment made me a better player by far.
- 40:54Speaker 6: Because play practice against the best you go in a game.
- 40:58Speaker 5: It's easy.
- 40:59Speaker 6: So that one thing I'll make sure I say about
- 41:01Speaker 6: the offensive line I prated against when I play here.
- 41:04Speaker 2: How much of your approach came from wrestling and a
- 41:08Speaker 2: wrestling mentality?
- 41:09Speaker 6: Number one, It was easy when you go into wrestling
- 41:12Speaker 6: matches one on one and I thought, when I lined
- 41:14Speaker 6: up on an offensive lineman, if I beat him, I'll
- 41:17Speaker 6: be fine.
- 41:18Speaker 5: That's why mentality all the way through.
- 41:19Speaker 6: There's a long lot of stories on how I had
- 41:21Speaker 6: ability to hand placement by pummeling, hit movements, single take,
- 41:26Speaker 6: now on throwing your hip on a double, All those
- 41:28Speaker 6: little things wrestling really made important. I think if any
- 41:31Speaker 6: athlete now, high school, college, whatever it is, has an
- 41:35Speaker 6: opportunity to wrestle as a key, as a big edge
- 41:37Speaker 6: in football.
- 41:39Speaker 2: You led the team in tackles five times as a noseguard,
- 41:43Speaker 2: which is basically unheard of. The first time was in
- 41:47Speaker 2: your third season. When did you realize that you could
- 41:51Speaker 2: dominate at the NFL level.
- 41:53Speaker 6: Well, it was after probably my second or third season.
- 41:56Speaker 6: You have to understand, and I want to make this
- 41:58Speaker 6: very important. I played nose tackle straight up on the center.
- 42:01Speaker 6: That's two gap. I means eight two A gaps. That's it,
- 42:04Speaker 6: both sides of centers. The A gap had both gaps.
- 42:07Speaker 6: For me to have that many tackles, it's unbelievable because
- 42:09Speaker 6: it's the wrestling metality. I beat him, Well, here comes
- 42:12Speaker 6: a double, I flip my hips.
- 42:13Speaker 5: I'm good to go.
- 42:14Speaker 6: But making those tackles, it was game after game, and
- 42:17Speaker 6: I think the biggest thing is play every snap like
- 42:19Speaker 6: it's last, and you'll have success.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Play every snap like it's your last snap.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Everything came together for the team in the nineteen eighty
- 42:28Speaker 2: eight season. You went twelve and four, You advanced to
- 42:31Speaker 2: Super Bowl twenty three. What are your most vivid memories
- 42:35Speaker 2: of that season?
- 42:36Speaker 6: Well, we were just my wife and I sure we're
- 42:38Speaker 6: having a discussion coming down driving traffic and probably the
- 42:42Speaker 6: best memory is we were in a Boomer's size's basement
- 42:46Speaker 6: and we said we're going to super Bowl. We had
- 42:49Speaker 6: to in factor that everybody's in. There was no I,
- 42:52Speaker 6: it was we. We were all in the same place
- 42:54Speaker 6: and we all wanted to have success and go to
- 42:56Speaker 6: Super Bowl. Boomer was the MVP that year. It was
- 43:00Speaker 6: Boomer's ion in nineteen eighty eight.
- 43:01Speaker 5: He always says, I'm not paying the butt.
- 43:05Speaker 1: He may be right, sure El's here, she can attest.
- 43:09Speaker 6: No Boomer is on the He said, he he's a
- 43:12Speaker 6: great quarterback. I like playing the Boomer because he's got
- 43:14Speaker 6: the factor. He's a he's a coach's coach, and he's
- 43:16Speaker 6: a players player. I mean, you can talk to him easy.
- 43:19Speaker 6: The funniest thing about it his lockers right next to mine.
- 43:21Speaker 6: I said, well, when the press come around, Boomer's got him,
- 43:24Speaker 6: I'm gone. So but we have a good relationship now
- 43:28Speaker 6: and stuff like that. But actually him getting the Raguana
- 43:30Speaker 6: is a great honor too. I talked to him before
- 43:32Speaker 6: he went in. I was happy that he got in.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Also, yeah, he went into the Ring of honor last year.
- 43:36Speaker 2: What was his leadership like in that nineteen eighty eight season.
- 43:40Speaker 6: It was fantastic and he was always I mean I
- 43:42Speaker 6: actually when I was a defensive lineman, I'd always you know,
- 43:45Speaker 6: I would watch the offense, you know, I watched practice
- 43:47Speaker 6: and in the games and stuff. He can't really watch
- 43:49Speaker 6: too much. But actually when they had come off the field,
- 43:52Speaker 6: they're running off the field, running on the field as
- 43:55Speaker 6: a team, as a group. That's that's camaraderie, and that's
- 43:57Speaker 6: how the team is built. And the whole group of
- 44:01Speaker 6: offense and defense and special teams, it was us us,
- 44:07Speaker 6: not I us. And that's important how he build and
- 44:10Speaker 6: has success.
- 44:12Speaker 2: So a big part of your legacy is obviously what
- 44:14Speaker 2: happened in that Super Bowl, the broken leg, and your
- 44:18Speaker 2: remarkable recovery after it happened thirty six years later. Do
- 44:24Speaker 2: you think about it, do you dream about it? What
- 44:28Speaker 2: comes to mind when you think back to that unfortunately
- 44:31Speaker 2: gruesome injury.
- 44:32Speaker 5: I mask about it every day, every time, every time
- 44:35Speaker 5: we go to a function. How's your leg? My leg
- 44:39Speaker 5: is just fine. I had some great doctors. Doctor Michael
- 44:42Speaker 5: Welts took care of it. I wanted to.
- 44:44Speaker 6: I actually saw him last weekend and anyway, but he
- 44:47Speaker 6: did a good job and the surgery and stuff. But
- 44:48Speaker 6: The key on that was, I should say is in
- 44:52Speaker 6: my mind was the willpower I'm coming back. I didn't
- 44:57Speaker 6: miss a game, even with after I played five or
- 45:00Speaker 6: six years with that nail amount tibia. But the thing
- 45:03Speaker 6: is on that after that injury, you get you get
- 45:05Speaker 6: woken up a little bit. But it was just my
- 45:07Speaker 6: mindset and mental toughness. Every day when I was in
- 45:10Speaker 6: physical therapy, I'm coming back, I'm coming back. I'm coming back.
- 45:14Speaker 5: There was no doubt.
- 45:16Speaker 6: It wasn't easy. There was days it felt like you
- 45:18Speaker 6: know what, it starts with an S. I can't say it,
- 45:21Speaker 6: but no, that was That's one of the things that
- 45:24Speaker 6: people now can of recognize me for. But the thing is,
- 45:26Speaker 6: I want to recognize for the mental toughness.
- 45:29Speaker 5: Of my game.
- 45:30Speaker 2: I have the ability to use a beep button, so
- 45:33Speaker 2: feel free to use any language you would like. What
- 45:36Speaker 2: was the rehab like following that injury, because as you mentioned,
- 45:39Speaker 2: you were back for week one.
- 45:40Speaker 6: Well, actually I left Cincinnati went back to Claire, Wisconsin,
- 45:45Speaker 6: and that's where I did my physical slerapy. I started
- 45:47Speaker 6: out there and I was on crutches and one of
- 45:51Speaker 6: the craziest things, and I don't remember every moment of it.
- 45:55Speaker 6: But the craziest one was I walked behind a snowballer
- 45:59Speaker 6: instead of crutch walk behind the snowboard, not flowing snow,
- 46:03Speaker 6: just walking.
- 46:03Speaker 5: Behind it and stimulating that bone. Actually, it's like a.
- 46:09Speaker 6: Deer, a dog. They get hit by a car. They
- 46:12Speaker 6: step in that leg, step on that leg, step in
- 46:14Speaker 6: that leg. I did the same type of thing. Stepped
- 46:17Speaker 6: down it, step down it, step down it. And that
- 46:20Speaker 6: was the key to stimulating that bone to grow.
- 46:23Speaker 2: You famously refused to take painkillers in the locker room
- 46:27Speaker 2: after it happened. You wouldn't have gone to the hospital
- 46:30Speaker 2: if they didn't make you go in the fourth quarter
- 46:32Speaker 2: to try to avoid traffic exiting the Super Bowl. Why
- 46:35Speaker 2: was that so important to you?
- 46:36Speaker 6: Well, the most important part was, you know I had
- 46:39Speaker 6: a TV on. Male remember the game, and they said
- 46:43Speaker 6: we have to set it. We're gonna get paid if
- 46:45Speaker 6: we said it.
- 46:46Speaker 5: Well, I remember the game.
- 46:48Speaker 7: He goes, Nope, I said, said it without pain killers.
- 46:52Speaker 7: No pain killers. But what did the old cowboys do?
- 46:56Speaker 7: Bite a bullet the place, I should say, the placement.
- 46:59Speaker 7: I can't give you a ball, Well give me a tall.
- 47:01Speaker 7: Then I got a tall A tall he said it.
- 47:04Speaker 7: He said it and then actually I think it was
- 47:07Speaker 7: just before the third quarter started, mid third quarter says.
- 47:12Speaker 6: We have to the animals. Driver in the paramedics. They
- 47:14Speaker 6: were fantastic, they said, Tim, we're gonna have to get
- 47:16Speaker 6: you out of the locker room for traffic.
- 47:18Speaker 5: We have to eat hopital. But we have a problem.
- 47:23Speaker 6: I was kind of delirious. Still, what's the problem. We
- 47:26Speaker 6: have to go over speed bumps, all right? So the
- 47:31Speaker 6: first speed bump went mmm, man, second.
- 47:35Speaker 5: Bump went, WHOA, give me the drugs? Right, So it
- 47:43Speaker 5: was like he drug me up.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I had enough to so speed bumps. We finally learned
- 47:49Speaker 2: the thing exactly. I've learned Tim Camerid's weakness. After all
- 47:53Speaker 2: these years, What if anything do you miss about playing football?
- 48:00Speaker 5: Practice?
- 48:01Speaker 2: Practice?
- 48:02Speaker 5: I love practice. Practice is fun to me, and it was.
- 48:05Speaker 5: It was fun.
- 48:06Speaker 6: Their games are fun and probably the big The coolest
- 48:08Speaker 6: thing is you know, the super Bowl is the coolest thing.
- 48:11Speaker 6: Get introduced it. That's the coolest thing. Having an accomplishment.
- 48:14Speaker 6: I think, practice and a camaraderie. And it wasn't a
- 48:17Speaker 6: it wasn't a job for me. I had fun doing it.
- 48:19Speaker 5: It wasn't like it was a hardship. You ever go
- 48:21Speaker 5: to Wilmington and come out of the locker room sweating
- 48:24Speaker 5: like a you know what, that's got to be fun.
- 48:28Speaker 5: And I had fun because.
- 48:29Speaker 6: Actually, you know, we had a lot of good, good
- 48:31Speaker 6: camaraderie with my teammates and stuff, you know, and Chris
- 48:34Speaker 6: collins Worth unfortunately Turk sh owners not hearing, but he
- 48:37Speaker 6: was my roommate in college and stuff like this.
- 48:39Speaker 5: But uh, I had fun. I had fun practicing, and
- 48:42Speaker 5: I'd found.
- 48:42Speaker 6: The games and and actually the I would get so
- 48:45Speaker 6: fired up in the games that one time I remember
- 48:48Speaker 6: coming off and I looked at Jim Breach and I.
- 48:50Speaker 5: Said, was the score? He was, You know, no, I
- 48:52Speaker 5: don't cool it. What's the score?
- 48:54Speaker 4: He tell me.
- 48:55Speaker 5: I guess you didn't look up there? No, I'm not
- 48:57Speaker 5: looking up there. So focused on it.
- 48:59Speaker 6: But I miss I missed the games. And I go
- 49:01Speaker 6: to practice here once in a while. But still when
- 49:02Speaker 6: the season comes around, I.
- 49:04Speaker 5: Still get that itch.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Every offensive lineman you ever played with is thinking. Of course,
- 49:10Speaker 2: he said, practice is what he misses. If anybody's going
- 49:14Speaker 2: to say they missed practice, it was CRIMRAI.
- 49:17Speaker 6: That's probably right, because actually there were the guys that
- 49:21Speaker 6: price against Ay Anthony and all the guys Max, they
- 49:29Speaker 6: thought I.
- 49:30Speaker 5: Was crazy because it was hell of practice. Now I
- 49:32Speaker 5: was going wide open.
- 49:34Speaker 6: So and then, actually, the the funny of the stories,
- 49:36Speaker 6: a lot of the dvs go you were painting the butt.
- 49:38Speaker 4: Tim.
- 49:39Speaker 6: We have to watch the film on you running down
- 49:41Speaker 6: to damn field, get the tackle.
- 49:45Speaker 5: You got tackles right, all of a sudden you show up.
- 49:48Speaker 5: I said, Well, I guess I wanted to get there.
- 49:52Speaker 2: So you played twelve years for the Bengals and retired
- 49:55Speaker 2: at a relatively young age. When did you know that
- 49:58Speaker 2: it was your time to hang them?
- 50:00Speaker 6: Well, I was always a believer in my body, and
- 50:05Speaker 6: my body wasn't working correctly. I lost a step. I
- 50:09Speaker 6: couldn't get that left, but the leg I broke. I
- 50:13Speaker 6: couldn't get that step up. It wasn't coming fire. One fire,
- 50:16Speaker 6: one fire. And I got to the point there I
- 50:18Speaker 6: wasn't doing this stuff I used to do, And I said,
- 50:20Speaker 6: I want to be remembered as the best of the best.
- 50:24Speaker 5: That's why he hung it up.
- 50:26Speaker 2: You got a motorcycle at your retirement game. I know
- 50:30Speaker 2: that you loved riding your bikes after your playing days.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Whatever happened to that motorcycle.
- 50:36Speaker 6: Well, so actually I got the motorcycle on the field.
- 50:40Speaker 6: The person in nineteen ninety four was I retired. I
- 50:44Speaker 6: had fourst grag one year. I had him come back
- 50:47Speaker 6: and introduce me after one year that he's the most
- 50:49Speaker 6: impact coach I had. So anyway, I got the motorcycle,
- 50:53Speaker 6: drove it off the field into the tunnel and total security. Guy,
- 50:57Speaker 6: We're gonna win the game. Keep it here and I'm
- 50:59Speaker 6: doing a victory lap. What so we want to do
- 51:03Speaker 6: victory or okay, back out?
- 51:08Speaker 2: Why did Forrest make such a big impact on you?
- 51:11Speaker 6: Because when Forrest I had him one year and he
- 51:14Speaker 6: was kind of the I was young, but I watched
- 51:17Speaker 6: him coach and was mannerisms meaning his temperament, my way
- 51:23Speaker 6: or the highway type of deal. And when I ever thought,
- 51:26Speaker 6: I said, I coached on a coach like him, stern
- 51:29Speaker 6: to the point, no, bs, you get this way, we're
- 51:33Speaker 6: not going to work.
- 51:34Speaker 5: And I really respected Forrest Gregg for what he did
- 51:36Speaker 5: to means for his first year.
- 51:39Speaker 2: After living in Colorado for many years, you moved back
- 51:41Speaker 2: to Cincinnati a few years back. Bengals fans are delighted
- 51:45Speaker 2: to see you at various Bengals events. What's it been
- 51:48Speaker 2: like for you to be back around the franchise and
- 51:50Speaker 2: to see the current team led by Joe Burrow.
- 51:52Speaker 6: Well, this is the this is the reason we moved
- 51:54Speaker 6: back is for I could go to the football games
- 51:56Speaker 6: and stuff. I enjoyed the games and watching the games.
- 51:58Speaker 6: And one thing I'm going to say about Joe, he's
- 52:01Speaker 6: a fantastic football player, but he's a factor. He's got it.
- 52:05Speaker 6: He's got it. How did the rest is like, he's
- 52:08Speaker 6: got it. You just see on that mannerisms. I've seen
- 52:11Speaker 6: a lot of players.
- 52:11Speaker 5: Now he's got it. So that's so it's said as
- 52:13Speaker 5: simple as that he's going to be a great player
- 52:15Speaker 5: for a long time.
- 52:16Speaker 2: How quickly did you see it?
- 52:18Speaker 5: National Championship game? I know if you we get him,
- 52:23Speaker 5: we're set to go.
- 52:25Speaker 2: And you knew they were going to get him because
- 52:27Speaker 2: they had the number one pick. You're in the Wisconsin
- 52:30Speaker 2: Hall of Fame, You're in the College Football Hall of Fame.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Now you're going to be in the Bengals Ring of Honor.
- 52:35Speaker 2: How does this honor compare to some of the things
- 52:37Speaker 2: that you've been honored for in the past.
- 52:39Speaker 6: It's one of those things that you know, high school
- 52:42Speaker 6: and college I have a lot of honors and all
- 52:44Speaker 6: of those and this is kind of just a closure
- 52:46Speaker 6: for me.
- 52:48Speaker 5: We have to ring and honor, and there's one other
- 52:50Speaker 5: thing maybe we'll have someday.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Canton, one more to go, Tim, As I said at
- 52:56Speaker 2: the top, Bengals fans have spoken. A few years ago
- 53:00Speaker 2: the team celebrated its fiftieth season. You were chosen as
- 53:03Speaker 2: the third greatest player of all time by Bengals fans,
- 53:07Speaker 2: and they've spoken again, selecting you for the Ring of Honor.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Congratulations on this well deserved honor, and for being the
- 53:15Speaker 2: player that many consider to be the toughest in franchise history.
- 53:20Speaker 5: Here's the thing everybody asked me about my broken Leagan
- 53:22Speaker 5: super Bowl twenty three. You can quote this. You can
- 53:25Speaker 5: break my other leg and put me in the Super
- 53:27Speaker 5: Bowl again.
- 53:30Speaker 1: You would break the other one if you could play
- 53:32Speaker 1: in another, break the other one.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Here's a stat that Pro Football Hall of Fame voters
- 53:38Speaker 2: need to consider. According to Pro Football Reference, crumbrise oney
- 53:44Speaker 2: seventeen career tackles are the most ever by an NFL
- 53:49Speaker 2: defensive tackle, and he did it as a noseguard, taking
- 53:53Speaker 2: on double teams on virtually every snap. Here's hoping he'll
- 53:58Speaker 2: get strong consideration for a goal jacket and canton in
- 54:01Speaker 2: the near future. But in the meantime, Tim has two
- 54:04Speaker 2: honors to look forward to this fall. In addition to
- 54:07Speaker 2: joining the Bengals Ring of Honor, Mondovi High School back
- 54:11Speaker 2: in Wisconsin is retiring his uniform number. Tim war number
- 54:15Speaker 2: forty four back then as a fullback and linebacker. That's
- 54:20Speaker 2: going to do it for this episode of the Bengals
