- 5:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:16Speaker 7: If you look at any of our social media those
- 5:19Speaker 7: who are in the South Carolina crew, you have Trivida Harris, Latayan,
- 5:25Speaker 7: Michelle little John, and you have me Patrese Grimble, and

- 5:50Speaker 2: So we're not a group.
- 5:52Speaker 7: That's just coming to one spot. We are knocked down
- 5:55Speaker 7: two cities. Okay, let's say two states. By say we
- 6:00Speaker 7: knocked down we knocked down California, and we knocked down Texas,
- 6:07Speaker 7: and now we bring it to South Carolina. Okay, so y'all, no,

- 6:36Speaker 7: is gonna go up. But also remember that space is limited. Okay,
- 6:41Speaker 7: So you got it. You gotta get it together, okay.
- 6:44Speaker 7: And let me tell you one more thing before I
- 6:48Speaker 7: bring on my children's person, because you know, August were
- 6:52Speaker 7: all about the kids, and this is the last day
- 6:54Speaker 7: of August, so you know we gotta end it right you.

- 7:23Speaker 7: you want this opportunity to come up to another level,
- 7:28Speaker 7: just to get that little push, you want to be
- 7:30Speaker 7: there October nineteenth at the Mino Crosby Building off a
- 7:34Speaker 7: Piedmont Drive here in North Charlseta, South Carolina. Okay, so
- 7:40Speaker 7: on not a Saturday night. So you know, I have
- 7:43Speaker 7: to bring.
- 7:43Speaker 2: A new author.
- 7:44Speaker 7: Okay, it's all about the kids this month. And she
- 7:48Speaker 7: has a serious called young Janie. Okay, you guys. She
- 7:54Speaker 7: has the beautiful smile and she's so sweet, and I
- 7:57Speaker 7: am honored to have her with us tonight.
- 8:01Speaker 6: I am introducing author Cassandra Charles.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Hey, my sweetie, Hello, how are you? How are you?
- 8:11Speaker 2: I'm good, I'm good.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Thank you so much for having me tonight. I'm so excited.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I was like, oh, I can't wait.
- 8:20Speaker 7: So first, you know, you got to tell us a
- 8:22Speaker 7: little bit about yourself, So go ahead and give us down.
- 8:26Speaker 4: All right, So I know we're we're talking about children,
- 8:28Speaker 4: so I'll circle back a little bit. So I am
- 8:30Speaker 4: author Cassandra Charles. I am an urban romance and erotica author.
- 8:35Speaker 4: And I have about twelve books published books, and I
- 8:40Speaker 4: have six journals and when I and and I have
- 8:44Speaker 4: a line of novelty items. And I noticed that no
- 8:48Speaker 4: one under eighteen could read any of my stuff or
- 8:51Speaker 4: really appreciate it. And my stuff, I have nieces, I
- 8:54Speaker 4: have nephews, I have you know, I have all these
- 8:57Speaker 4: kids around me.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And I came up with this idea to do.
- 9:01Speaker 4: A spinoff of my just a backstory, my full catalog
- 9:07Speaker 4: is sent her around, looks the wrong way, sent her around.
- 9:10Speaker 4: This character here, Jamie Reynolds. So it's kind of the
- 9:14Speaker 4: It's kind of like the seven the Kevin Bacon Game
- 9:18Speaker 4: of books. So you have Jamie Reynolds, she's the main character,
- 9:21Speaker 4: and everyone interacts at some point in.
- 9:25Speaker 2: The book about her.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Whether it's a sixth book series or if it's a standalone,
- 9:30Speaker 4: it's some kind of interaction with her. X of an
- 9:33Speaker 4: ex of a friend of a friend knew her kind
- 9:35Speaker 4: of thing. So I was like, where do I go
- 9:38Speaker 4: if I try to get into the children's world. So
- 9:41Speaker 4: I came up with the concept of young Jamie. So
- 9:44Speaker 4: before she before she became Jamie Reynolds chronicles in the
- 9:49Speaker 4: urban romance and erotica, she was a young girl from
- 9:52Speaker 4: Brooklyn that Jesse used to be really curious and.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Just enjoyed life and kind of doing kid things.
- 10:00Speaker 4: So I always make a joke and say, so I
- 10:02Speaker 4: was raised in Brooklyn and born and raised in Brooklyn.
- 10:05Speaker 4: So it's kind of loosely based on like things that
- 10:08Speaker 4: I did growing up, what I used to love. I
- 10:10Speaker 4: used to love Tony's Pizza, which was my favorite pizza shop.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I love going to the park. I love, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 4: just kind of playing on the stoop with my sisters
- 10:19Speaker 4: and just doing those kind of free, you know, free
- 10:22Speaker 4: things that we did growing up.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So that's what this book is about.
- 10:25Speaker 4: And I think it's a little different because it's kind
- 10:30Speaker 4: of interactive. So it asks questions because I want kids
- 10:33Speaker 4: to be able to learn about themselves. So it says, Hi,
- 10:37Speaker 4: I'm Jamie. What's your name?
- 10:38Speaker 2: So it's allowing the kids to respond back saying, my
- 10:41Speaker 2: name is Cassandra Charles. You know I'm four. How old
- 10:45Speaker 2: are you? I'm four? So it just allows the kid
- 10:47Speaker 2: to kind of go back and forth.
- 10:48Speaker 4: And I always try to do things a little bit
- 10:51Speaker 4: different in my in my world as an author, so yes,
- 10:56Speaker 4: that's kind of my story again.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Born and raised in Brooklyn, is an avid reader.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I've been reading for a very very long time, and
- 11:02Speaker 4: I said, why not try this whole writing journey. First
- 11:05Speaker 4: book came out in twenty fifteen, and here I am.
- 11:09Speaker 4: I'm still in the business and I still love reading
- 11:12Speaker 4: and writing, and I'm really excited to continue my journey
- 11:16Speaker 4: and see, like how what's what I do next in
- 11:19Speaker 4: my life.
- 11:19Speaker 7: So okay, so let me stop you first of all,
- 11:26Speaker 7: talk about well brownded.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I know, I know what. No, I love that.
- 11:32Speaker 7: I love that that you take the whole family in consideration. Yeah,
- 11:37Speaker 7: I think that is beautiful. I really love that. You
- 11:43Speaker 7: know me, you gonna have to have a talk down
- 11:45Speaker 7: about your Robert books. But that's a different show exactly.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I know.
- 11:52Speaker 7: So what I understood that you wrote these books for
- 11:56Speaker 7: the little people in your life. What was their reaction
- 12:00Speaker 7: to Auntie writing a book for them?
- 12:04Speaker 4: I think since they don't know Auntie writes books for adults,
- 12:08Speaker 4: they don't know that side of me, they just thought
- 12:11Speaker 4: it was really really cool.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And I remember connected with my.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Niece and and she's eight, so she's not exactly in
- 12:17Speaker 4: the age range. My age range is from like five
- 12:19Speaker 4: and under. And I was like, do you like this character?
- 12:22Speaker 4: Can you this the young the little Jamie? I said,
- 12:25Speaker 4: can you can you relate to this character? And I
- 12:28Speaker 4: sent her like two different kids, and she was like, Oh,
- 12:31Speaker 4: I like her, She's pretty, she has here like me,
- 12:34Speaker 4: like you know.
- 12:34Speaker 2: It was like little key things like that.
- 12:36Speaker 4: So I was like, I'm you know, I'm writing a
- 12:39Speaker 4: book and they were like, oh, that's so much fun.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I want to write a book. So I don't think
- 12:42Speaker 2: they understood like what I was doing.
- 12:45Speaker 4: They kind of made it seem like I'm just writing
- 12:46Speaker 4: the coloring book and you can write my two kind
- 12:49Speaker 4: of thing. But yeah, so once they got done and
- 12:52Speaker 4: I showed them the finished product, and I'm like, remember
- 12:54Speaker 4: when we talked about this little girl here and they
- 12:56Speaker 4: was like, oh, she's so pretty.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Oh I like her shirt I told you to do.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Think I told him I was gonna do pink anywhere,
- 13:02Speaker 2: but like, oh, I told you to do pink. And
- 13:04Speaker 2: so I mean, I don't really think they grasp what
- 13:07Speaker 2: I do.
- 13:08Speaker 4: And I think I have a lot more family and
- 13:11Speaker 4: parents like appreciate, like kind of take me serious as
- 13:15Speaker 4: an author because now they can physically see something in color.
- 13:19Speaker 2: And I guess I'm not offending the family.
- 13:21Speaker 4: I don't really know, but but you know, it's it's
- 13:24Speaker 4: been fun, and you know, I try my best to
- 13:27Speaker 4: open up for feedback and ask questions and like how
- 13:31Speaker 4: long would the book be? And you know, would you
- 13:33Speaker 4: read a book like this? And what do you like
- 13:35Speaker 4: to do when you read a book? What do you
- 13:37Speaker 4: like to see?
- 13:37Speaker 2: And they're like colors and a lot of little things.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And you know, so I kind of followed, I guess
- 13:43Speaker 4: the advice of like a six year old.
- 13:45Speaker 2: And a nine year old trying to write this book.
- 13:47Speaker 7: So you had a little mini focus group.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I did.
- 13:52Speaker 7: But that's great because you actually took their their input
- 13:57Speaker 7: and I love that that shows them that, hey, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 7: someone's listening. And the fact that your character and y'all
- 14:05Speaker 7: know me. I say this every week since I've been
- 14:11Speaker 7: doing children's authors. I have a twenty one year old
- 14:17Speaker 7: son and a nine year old daughter. So when my
- 14:21Speaker 7: twenty one year old was nine, the books were The
- 14:27Speaker 7: Dog and the Little White Boy. Yeah, as all of
- 14:31Speaker 7: us were, you know, as we had to work with.
- 14:35Speaker 7: But I am so proud to be able to give
- 14:40Speaker 7: my nine year old daughter these little girls who look
- 14:45Speaker 7: just like her. Yeah, and the fact that some of
- 14:48Speaker 7: the characters have My daughter has locks, the characters have locks.
- 14:54Speaker 7: I am so honored to be able to read her
- 14:57Speaker 7: her book and she's able to relate that better than
- 15:00Speaker 7: my son. I usually have to get him books that
- 15:03Speaker 7: was comedy because he likes it made him laugh. But
- 15:07Speaker 7: I wasn't able to give him the books that I
- 15:11Speaker 7: felt that he would enjoy being an African American male.
- 15:15Speaker 7: So how does it feel to be a part of
- 15:21Speaker 7: this diverse error.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Well, I mean representation absolutely matters.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I think that is absolutely key, and I agree with you,
- 15:29Speaker 4: just to be able to see or have my books
- 15:31Speaker 4: along the shelves of like other authors and other black
- 15:34Speaker 4: and brown faces that looks like us. And I actually
- 15:37Speaker 4: saw a book recently with a black character with you
- 15:42Speaker 4: know when you have like the pigment, like your your
- 15:44Speaker 4: oh my goodness, like.
- 15:48Speaker 2: The spots and it was just so beautiful.
- 15:50Speaker 4: That it was like, you know, like, oh my gosh,
- 15:53Speaker 4: I can't think of what they're what they're called a bino.
- 15:55Speaker 4: It's like atino. It was just such another one had spots.
- 15:58Speaker 4: It was just such a beautiful and it was the
- 16:00Speaker 4: Imperfection book. So I love the fact that this is
- 16:04Speaker 4: a safe space for us to be unique and to
- 16:06Speaker 4: be different, and for us authors too.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Like I was excited to see that. I was like,
- 16:11Speaker 2: even though you know.
- 16:12Speaker 4: I don't know anyone in my circle that looks like that,
- 16:14Speaker 4: but that is a look that is normal for us
- 16:17Speaker 4: to see on a daily basis.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And it was just so beautiful.
- 16:20Speaker 4: When you talk about representation. It's so beautiful to see
- 16:23Speaker 4: that because, yes, growing up, we did not have that
- 16:26Speaker 4: at all. I know you're talking about from your son's
- 16:28Speaker 4: point of view. I'm talking about from my own point
- 16:31Speaker 4: of view. I didn't have that, you know, I mean honestly,
- 16:34Speaker 4: And I do believe me personally, and I don't think
- 16:36Speaker 4: I have low self esteem, but I do believe personally
- 16:40Speaker 4: I have a false perception sometimes of what beauty is.
- 16:44Speaker 4: And that's because growing up, I didn't see black and
- 16:46Speaker 4: brown faces as beautiful. I saw Barbie's and I saw
- 16:50Speaker 4: these other characters that you had to be skinny, or
- 16:52Speaker 4: you had to have long hair, or you know, you
- 16:54Speaker 4: couldn't really see your authentic self. So I love the
- 16:57Speaker 4: fact that we're pushing such a positive narrative on this
- 17:02Speaker 4: generation to be yourself, to be and black is beautiful.
- 17:05Speaker 4: And I'm telling my nieces and my nephew, I'm looking
- 17:08Speaker 4: at this little character and I'm just like, she's so
- 17:10Speaker 4: cute to me, Like she's beautiful, she has natural hair.
- 17:13Speaker 4: You know, she has representation. My parents are from Trinidad
- 17:16Speaker 4: and Tobago, so for the Trindadian's out there, hello, happy
- 17:19Speaker 4: Independence Day today. But she has on a Jidney bead
- 17:22Speaker 4: So for those who are from the Islands, you will
- 17:25Speaker 4: know the reason why a little black girl will wear
- 17:27Speaker 4: a Jitney beads or you know, little things like that
- 17:30Speaker 4: that represents a culture. Even in her bedroom she has
- 17:34Speaker 4: a little bit of a like a Trinidad. I didn't
- 17:36Speaker 4: flag in her bedroom. It's like little things like that.
- 17:39Speaker 4: I want people to look back and start pulling out,
- 17:42Speaker 4: Like my room looks like that. Oh I have a
- 17:43Speaker 4: flag too, And I just I think representation twenty twenty
- 17:48Speaker 4: four is as crazy as this world is.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I love the fact that.
- 17:51Speaker 4: These are some of the positive things that we can
- 17:53Speaker 4: definitely pull out because we didn't have this. We didn't
- 17:55Speaker 4: have natural back then. We have less fast and fair
- 17:59Speaker 4: as hard we have think so and we had red skill.
- 18:02Speaker 4: You know, we didn't have nude. So it's like to
- 18:04Speaker 4: see this now is a beautiful thing. So I'm super
- 18:07Speaker 4: excited to be a part of that journey with it.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Yeah, because we had what do we.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Have back then?
- 18:12Speaker 2: Well, Lord, I'm aged myself.
- 18:15Speaker 8: I had Sweet Valley High YEP and Babysitters Club now
- 18:21Speaker 8: even the babysitters Club Now I work at a public library,
- 18:24Speaker 8: so it's so cool to see the Babysitters Club with
- 18:28Speaker 8: all the different skin types this week.
- 18:33Speaker 7: Yes, and they even took it a step further. For
- 18:36Speaker 7: those of our kids that are reluctant readers readers, we
- 18:40Speaker 7: have crapping novels.
- 18:42Speaker 6: My daughter with tear about four or five of those
- 18:45Speaker 6: things up.
- 18:47Speaker 7: It is ridiculous how she does it, but she likes it.
- 18:52Speaker 2: And I think one of the characters name is Mia.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I think it's Mia.
- 18:55Speaker 7: That's that's one of her favorite characters. So what how
- 19:05Speaker 7: do you describe your ideal book reader.
- 19:11Speaker 2: For my children's book?
- 19:12Speaker 7: Of my book, I would be the adult book, but
- 19:17Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 19:18Speaker 4: No, I mean, honestly, I say zero to five because
- 19:22Speaker 4: really and truly the book is designed for a child
- 19:27Speaker 4: to learn about themselves. So I said zero to five
- 19:31Speaker 4: because I feel like the spectrum of learning styles are
- 19:35Speaker 4: so so different now. So you know, you may have
- 19:38Speaker 4: a two year old that knows how to say their
- 19:40Speaker 4: first and last name, they know what city they live in,
- 19:43Speaker 4: they know what state they live, and they know how
- 19:44Speaker 4: old they are. You may have a one year old
- 19:46Speaker 4: does stem and then you also may have not have
- 19:48Speaker 4: a person until they're four or five that know this
- 19:51Speaker 4: So my ideal applicant who can read, my ideal reader
- 19:57Speaker 4: is really a mom who wants to have their child
- 20:00Speaker 4: learn about themselves and the best way possible. And it
- 20:03Speaker 4: doesn't matter what age that is, because again, you can
- 20:06Speaker 4: start incorporating this book as early as a one year old,
- 20:09Speaker 4: even though they may or may not be able to speak.
- 20:11Speaker 4: They can relate to the colors on here, they could
- 20:13Speaker 4: relate to the character that looks like them. And again
- 20:16Speaker 4: it starts off with basic stuff like this book belongs
- 20:19Speaker 4: to and then the child will write it in. So
- 20:22Speaker 4: a two year old may not be writing, but a
- 20:24Speaker 4: five year old could be writing. So you'll write your
- 20:25Speaker 4: name in here, and then again it just goes and
- 20:29Speaker 4: it goes into she's introducing, so she's saying, hey, this
- 20:33Speaker 4: is my bedroom, and it says why am I keep
- 20:35Speaker 4: doing this? It says, Hi, my name is Jamie and
- 20:39Speaker 4: I'm four years old?
- 20:40Speaker 2: How old are you? So as a parent, you're reading
- 20:43Speaker 2: this to your child and you can say you're two.
- 20:46Speaker 4: And then when the child is able to write in too,
- 20:48Speaker 4: whether you spell a two, write in the number two,
- 20:51Speaker 4: they can write it in. So it literally will grow
- 20:54Speaker 4: with you as you from like a one year old,
- 20:56Speaker 4: two year old all the way up to five, because
- 20:58Speaker 4: then they will be like they will read for you.
- 21:00Speaker 4: There's also sight words in here that students will learn.
- 21:03Speaker 4: How loose, so there is I am those are sight words, yes,
- 21:09Speaker 4: so like little things like that are kind of incorporated.
- 21:11Speaker 4: And then I changed the colors from page to page.
- 21:14Speaker 4: And this is if you were born and raised in Brooklyn.
- 21:16Speaker 4: This is supposed to be like a Brooklyn stoop. It's
- 21:19Speaker 4: not exactly, but it's nice and colorful and it represents
- 21:25Speaker 4: a city that I am born and raised in. It's
- 21:28Speaker 4: just like the colors the Brownstone. This is supposed to
- 21:30Speaker 4: be like a Brownstone, and then it it and I
- 21:33Speaker 4: feel like even for parents, if you're.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Born and raised in Brooklyn, or you're a little.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Bit older like my like us, there's always that random
- 21:41Speaker 4: lady on the stoop.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yes, it kind of just grew up on the block.
- 21:44Speaker 4: She's reading her papers, she's drinking some tea. So it's
- 21:47Speaker 4: like a little kind of like funny characters. So my
- 21:50Speaker 4: idel reader is going to be a mom that is
- 21:53Speaker 4: excited to have her his or her daughter or son
- 21:57Speaker 4: learn about themselves, but also excited to pull out sight.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Words or have them reading and have them writing. So
- 22:03Speaker 2: it's all kind of fun things in here.
- 22:05Speaker 4: And then you know I did incorporate you know, like
- 22:08Speaker 4: I like pizza. It's my favorite thing to eat. Why
- 22:10Speaker 4: because most kids that's their favorite things to eat. But
- 22:13Speaker 4: you know it couldn't be. But then they go to
- 22:15Speaker 4: the park and she makes friends at the park and
- 22:18Speaker 4: she asks her friends like, Hi, my name is Jamie.
- 22:20Speaker 2: What's your name? So she's really.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Going up and she's learning about herself. She's excited. I
- 22:25Speaker 4: even have like a there's a part in here where
- 22:28Speaker 4: she was about to eat something and her mom said, wait,
- 22:30Speaker 4: you didn't wash your hands, So her and her sister
- 22:32Speaker 4: go into the bathroom and they sing a washing hand song.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Since I didn't have the ability to copyright washing hand song,
- 22:40Speaker 4: I just say on here, you and your child read,
- 22:43Speaker 4: read your favorite, sing your favorite wash your hand song together.
- 22:47Speaker 4: So it's also teaching them how to wash their hands.
- 22:49Speaker 4: It's teaching them how to interact with you. Try to
- 22:51Speaker 4: build that relationship between mom AND's daughter or son and
- 22:55Speaker 4: you know, father and son, et cetera. So if you're
- 22:59Speaker 4: a good reader and you want a child to learn
- 23:01Speaker 4: and be excited about themselves and again, you know, we
- 23:05Speaker 4: are in twenty twenty four and I hate to have
- 23:07Speaker 4: to even mention this, but it's really important for kids
- 23:10Speaker 4: at the earliest age to learn God. Forvid they get separated,
- 23:14Speaker 4: they know their full name, they know what city they're in,
- 23:17Speaker 4: they know who they live with.
- 23:18Speaker 2: You know, you're not.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Supposed to just say I live with my mom and dad. Well,
- 23:21Speaker 4: what's your mommy's name. You can't just say mommy. You
- 23:24Speaker 4: got to say, oh, my name is Cassandra Charles. So
- 23:26Speaker 4: those kind of things are in here as well, like
- 23:29Speaker 4: just kind of like elaborating what's your name, how old
- 23:32Speaker 4: are you?
- 23:33Speaker 2: What's your favorite color?
- 23:34Speaker 4: I mean they're introductory questions, but as a parent you
- 23:37Speaker 4: should continue building on it. Like it says I live
- 23:40Speaker 4: in the state, it says the state I.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Live in New Jersey. I mean I live in New York.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Where do you live?
- 23:44Speaker 4: And then the parents supposed to be responsible to say, well,
- 23:46Speaker 4: this is a city we live in, this is how
- 23:49Speaker 4: addressed we live in.
- 23:50Speaker 2: But things like that.
- 23:51Speaker 7: So so you I could see that you were very
- 23:54Speaker 7: intentional with this book. I was yes, even to the
- 23:58Speaker 7: handwriting lines that this seems like this would be a
- 24:03Speaker 7: great gift for someone who is a great Christmas gift,
- 24:12Speaker 7: great Christmas kiss.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Reason being because.
- 24:19Speaker 6: There's so much educational links in this book.
- 24:23Speaker 7: I see the color changes that you spoke of, very
- 24:26Speaker 7: intentional helping learn how to color, the writing part, especially
- 24:32Speaker 7: the lines, very intentional, the the scenes, the interaction with
- 24:41Speaker 7: the I mean, they can still writing this book.
- 24:43Speaker 6: I mean I don't want to.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I don't want to damage your book. But if I
- 24:48Speaker 2: was a parried.
- 24:50Speaker 7: And you gave that book to me, I would literally
- 24:53Speaker 7: take that book and get elaminated, because that is a
- 24:58Speaker 7: book that can roll with your child. Yeah, they're he'll
- 25:00Speaker 7: change one minute, they would like the part. Next minute,
- 25:04Speaker 7: I could like the part who knows they might even move?
- 25:07Speaker 7: And if they're five, they're gonna change the name of
- 25:10Speaker 7: fifty million times. But I love the fact of how
- 25:14Speaker 7: intentional you are with that book. So have you Well
- 25:21Speaker 7: let's save that question for later. What was the hardest
- 25:24Speaker 7: part about doing a children's book?
- 25:29Speaker 2: The illustration? Because you have a vision.
- 25:33Speaker 4: So the character that was how I you know, for
- 25:36Speaker 4: for those who are looking, that's how I kind of
- 25:38Speaker 4: like found my designer. I gave them like a mock up,
- 25:42Speaker 4: like I'm looking for an African American girl, pigtails, hoop bearings,
- 25:46Speaker 4: you know, kind of like semi rounded face, like did
- 25:48Speaker 4: it up?
- 25:49Speaker 2: So?
- 25:49Speaker 4: And then I just I paid like a few artists,
- 25:53Speaker 4: very around four artists, just to see what their vision was.
- 25:56Speaker 4: If I can just physically describe she needs to be
- 26:00Speaker 4: you know, she's four and she's you know, so I
- 26:03Speaker 4: physically described, and I was trying to see what they
- 26:04Speaker 4: came up with. And then I sent them some generic
- 26:07Speaker 4: like oh, someone like this is cute or I like
- 26:09Speaker 4: her here, but I don't like her cheeks, so and
- 26:11Speaker 4: I was curious to see what someone came up with.
- 26:13Speaker 4: So the design aspect was probably the most challenging part
- 26:17Speaker 4: because even if you got the main character the visualization
- 26:21Speaker 4: in your head, and then when you see it on paper.
- 26:23Speaker 2: You're like, oh no, it wasn't supposed to look like that,
- 26:25Speaker 2: And it's just it's.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Hard because you don't have anything to go off outside
- 26:29Speaker 4: of saying, I mean the New York scene. I was like,
- 26:33Speaker 4: it needs to be a New York a New York block,
- 26:36Speaker 4: and I'm like, you know, what is that? And then
- 26:38Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah, so it needs to be So it's
- 26:40Speaker 4: like these kind of elements was really difficult. But then
- 26:42Speaker 4: I sat with this and I'm like, you know, to
- 26:45Speaker 4: make a New York block into a cartoon like this
- 26:48Speaker 4: is good.
- 26:48Speaker 2: You know, this is great. So I really liked it.
- 26:51Speaker 2: You know, a purple hydrant.
- 26:53Speaker 4: You know. I added like pigeons in here, like sores
- 26:56Speaker 4: those I feel like once he did the mock up,
- 27:01Speaker 4: I think it just needed those elements of like, you know,
- 27:04Speaker 4: the a tree stump or a bird or a pigeon
- 27:08Speaker 4: or a trash can thinks little.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Yeah, but it took about I mean, I'll probably say.
- 27:16Speaker 4: And it was also my first book, so I plan
- 27:18Speaker 4: to use the designer for the rest of the series.
- 27:20Speaker 4: But I do want to make it just like how
- 27:22Speaker 4: the Jamie Renal Chronicles has twelve books around the adult version,
- 27:28Speaker 4: I want the children's book to have a similar thing
- 27:30Speaker 4: where I'm making a series of it, so it's always
- 27:33Speaker 4: gonna be within the zero to five age and it's
- 27:36Speaker 4: just going to be more serious. So the next one
- 27:37Speaker 4: I'm going to do, which hasn't haven't started it yet,
- 27:40Speaker 4: but it's gonna be a night time book. It's gonna
- 27:43Speaker 4: be like her routine at night, so it's gonna be
- 27:44Speaker 4: obviously brushing her teeth and saying her prayers or you know,
- 27:48Speaker 4: putting her bonnet on, you know, reading a bedtime story,
- 27:52Speaker 4: and and it would be even like a checklist inside,
- 27:55Speaker 4: like a mental checklist did you did you?
- 27:57Speaker 2: Did you brush your teeth? Check did you?
- 27:59Speaker 4: You know, just kind of like that, And I think
- 28:01Speaker 4: I'm always going to keep it kind of hands on
- 28:03Speaker 4: or kind of like interactive between people. But I think now,
- 28:08Speaker 4: so obviously the scene will be in her bedroom. We
- 28:13Speaker 4: already have the bedroom ironed out, so I feel like
- 28:15Speaker 4: the designer will be like, all right, we got.
- 28:17Speaker 2: The bedroom scene already.
- 28:18Speaker 4: All we now need to do is like a bathroom
- 28:20Speaker 4: scene or maybe switch up the angles a little bit.
- 28:22Speaker 2: So I'm hoping it's easier to continue moving on with
- 28:26Speaker 2: them with the journey.
- 28:28Speaker 4: So yeah, and then this in my mind, cause I
- 28:32Speaker 4: try to do things different, I think this is going
- 28:34Speaker 4: to be a double sided book.
- 28:36Speaker 2: And let me explain.
- 28:38Speaker 4: One side of the book is going to be a
- 28:40Speaker 4: morning and then when you flip it over, the other
- 28:44Speaker 4: side of the book would be a night.
- 28:45Speaker 2: So it's gonna be.
- 28:46Speaker 4: A morning read of like good morning, let's wake up,
- 28:49Speaker 4: let's brush our teeth, let's get breakfast, let's get up,
- 28:52Speaker 4: and then the night book the night side, so good night,
- 28:54Speaker 4: so it'd be like a good morning, Hi, my name
- 28:56Speaker 4: is Jamie. Good morning, or good morning, my name is Jamie.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Good night, my name is Jamie.
- 28:59Speaker 2: So like that.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Again, I haven't figured out all of it, but that
- 29:03Speaker 4: is kind of like the direction that I'm gonna go,
- 29:05Speaker 4: and it's gonna drop next year because I'm working on
- 29:08Speaker 4: a big project this year and.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I just want it to be done.
- 29:10Speaker 4: So once that's done, I can put my I can
- 29:12Speaker 4: get my head wrapped around. All right, let's focus back
- 29:16Speaker 4: on the kid's journal.
- 29:17Speaker 6: I love the double concept.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I love that.
- 29:20Speaker 6: I've seen it several times, but I've never seen it do.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Good at night.
- 29:26Speaker 6: I've seen it the character does this.
- 29:29Speaker 7: And then the character turns around that does another thing.
- 29:31Speaker 7: So I love the double concept books.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 29:36Speaker 7: How do you you have this very much on point
- 29:42Speaker 7: adult book? What would literary success look like for your
- 29:49Speaker 7: children's books?
- 29:52Speaker 2: That's a great question. I mean, I feel like you know,
- 29:57Speaker 2: and a lot of people may or may not agree
- 29:59Speaker 2: with this. It's not defined by the number of sales.
- 30:03Speaker 2: For me, it's not defined by a number of sales.
- 30:06Speaker 4: It's gonna be the impact it actually has on the community.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Like I want people to be excited that there's another
- 30:13Speaker 4: book coming out. I want people to when I do
- 30:16Speaker 4: book reads, I usually when I do children's reads, I
- 30:19Speaker 4: will pull a cat, like a little girl or a
- 30:21Speaker 4: little boy up there with me.
- 30:23Speaker 2: And I will ask some HOI my name is Jamie,
- 30:25Speaker 2: what's your name? My name is so and so so.
- 30:27Speaker 4: I like that, to me is a good level of
- 30:30Speaker 4: success because I'm teaching young.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I'm doing what the book is supposed to do.
- 30:37Speaker 4: And I still love meeting fans, I still love going
- 30:41Speaker 4: doing book reads.
- 30:42Speaker 2: So those kind of things.
- 30:43Speaker 4: If I can enhance it a little bit more, I'll
- 30:45Speaker 4: be happy with it and say it's successful.
- 30:47Speaker 2: But most people will not agree with this.
- 30:50Speaker 4: But like, I definitely don't come into the author's space
- 30:54Speaker 4: to be like rich, Like that's not my goal. I
- 30:56Speaker 4: really do this because I really love writing. I love
- 31:00Speaker 4: to express myself and it's such an outlet for me.
- 31:03Speaker 4: It's like a stress reliever for me that I accomplished something.
- 31:06Speaker 4: I did something and people are and I say impressed,
- 31:09Speaker 4: not that I need people to be impressed, but to
- 31:11Speaker 4: hear people hear that you have a series of children's
- 31:13Speaker 4: book they're like, wow, like that's inspiring, that's really really cool.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And you know, so I.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Don't really have like a like a true way to
- 31:25Speaker 4: say I've made it. I think doing podcasts like this
- 31:29Speaker 4: is enough for me selling, you know, having book sales,
- 31:32Speaker 4: having people buy it for Christmas, or being able to
- 31:36Speaker 4: sell it at my table and actually sell out those
- 31:39Speaker 4: things in itself. And I often bring anywhere between six
- 31:42Speaker 4: to ten books of the children's books, and it's usually
- 31:45Speaker 4: right next to the adult books. And it's cool to
- 31:47Speaker 4: see that adults who pick up a book at my
- 31:50Speaker 4: table has everything for everyone. And now I have children's books.
- 31:53Speaker 4: So that in itself is a level of success that
- 31:57Speaker 4: I did not think when I started this journey in
- 31:59Speaker 4: twenty fifteen that I will be here to say that
- 32:01Speaker 4: I have.
- 32:01Speaker 2: A whole line of books and journals and now with
- 32:04Speaker 2: children to see you.
- 32:04Speaker 4: So I'm not saying I'm successful already, but I feel
- 32:08Speaker 4: like I'm at a good level of success with my journey.
- 32:11Speaker 7: You are, you literally are successful because you you're an author
- 32:19Speaker 7: that I may not read any of your books, but
- 32:22Speaker 7: I will share every single time because you have that
- 32:25Speaker 7: genuine love for the art. I met an author and
- 32:30Speaker 7: it was not a good interaction. And she is a
- 32:33Speaker 7: New York bestseller. I will never read a book again.
- 32:36Speaker 7: I will never promet her book. But you have a
- 32:39Speaker 7: genuine love for it, so you're already successful. Somebody said,
- 32:46Speaker 7: do you have a book to wake up for work
- 32:49Speaker 7: on Monday morning?
- 32:50Speaker 2: I need that book? I need that book. Can I
- 32:57Speaker 2: get the book that I had a program today and
- 32:59Speaker 2: I'm sleepy? Book? Because that would be for me. So
- 33:07Speaker 2: here's my fun questions.
- 33:08Speaker 7: I send you guys questions all the time, and I
- 33:11Speaker 7: know you got your questions, my fine questions.
- 33:13Speaker 2: I did not send you all because I want you
- 33:15Speaker 2: guys to think on your feet.
- 33:18Speaker 6: So you have your character. Your young character is a person.
- 33:27Speaker 7: What children's actor or actress would be the character?
- 33:34Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, Oh my goodness, Oh my goodness, Children's
- 33:41Speaker 4: I feel like I'm trying to She's not a child anymore,
- 33:45Speaker 4: but she would have been perfect.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Okayoo, the little girl from Blackest. What's that little girl's.
- 33:51Speaker 7: Name, Marseille Marchay.
- 33:57Speaker 2: I don't know her last name?
- 33:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I think just because she was and I say
- 34:02Speaker 4: quirky very loosely. This is not I consider myself to
- 34:05Speaker 4: be quirky. So that's not an insult by any mean.
- 34:09Speaker 4: She had this quirkiness of huh and a little bit
- 34:11Speaker 4: of a sass, but she was you know what I'm saying,
- 34:14Speaker 4: and I feel like my and she was so genuine.
- 34:16Speaker 2: I mean yes, in the.
- 34:18Speaker 4: Very beginning she was very genuine, and towards the end
- 34:20Speaker 4: they kind of made her like she was you know,
- 34:22Speaker 4: she was like threatening Charlie and stuff.
- 34:24Speaker 2: But when she was really really young, she had this.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Pure innocence to her, And I feel like that is
- 34:29Speaker 4: definitely my character. Is just pure and innocent and just free.
- 34:35Speaker 4: And she had very supportive parents and she was like
- 34:38Speaker 4: they fostered learning and growing. And I liked her in
- 34:42Speaker 4: that whole character, that whole who she was as the
- 34:46Speaker 4: individual on the show.
- 34:47Speaker 2: But yeah, I like her. I'm trying to think, do
- 34:48Speaker 2: I know.
- 34:49Speaker 4: Of any other youngish characters I like her?
- 34:54Speaker 2: I think I mean when she was like a young
- 34:56Speaker 2: kid and not she's a grown woman. Jo your money game.
- 35:03Speaker 7: See if I could have choose a care a child star,
- 35:11Speaker 7: who I would have chosen? Oh God, what's the It's like,
- 35:23Speaker 7: I'm looking at the show. I'm looking at the show
- 35:25Speaker 7: right now as we speak. I'm looking at the show
- 35:30Speaker 7: Good Times, a younger version of Thelma.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Oh okay, okay, I chose that.
- 35:39Speaker 7: And then it was another one. I was looking at
- 35:43Speaker 7: the daughter off of Bernie Max Show, the Youngest One, Brianna.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Okay, that's a good one. And then also raving someone
- 35:53Speaker 4: when she was on the Cosby Show.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good one that It just came to
- 36:00Speaker 2: me that would have been to go on. She was Olivia,
- 36:02Speaker 2: Olivia on the Olivia.
- 36:04Speaker 7: Yes, so of course you know your character she needs parents. Okay,
- 36:13Speaker 7: who would her parents be? Hey, mom was an actor
- 36:22Speaker 7: and her mom was an R and B singer.
- 36:27Speaker 4: See my mind automatically goes to my favorite, my favorite,
- 36:31Speaker 4: my favorite R.
- 36:33Speaker 2: And B artist is Mary day Blige.
- 36:34Speaker 4: But I just can't see her in that motherly girl. Okay,
- 36:41Speaker 4: so it would be so her mom is an R
- 36:44Speaker 4: and B singer.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Yes, Oh lord, child, you brought me to the test today.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Who is I was gonna see all these questions.
- 36:56Speaker 6: Saying let me see so somebody say flex for the mail.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I can see that. Flex, I can see him, Okay,
- 37:05Speaker 2: I can I can see that. Yeah.
- 37:09Speaker 4: And then who would be the female? All right, guys,
- 37:12Speaker 4: come on, chime in. Who could be the female singer
- 37:16Speaker 4: R and B singer, Well, I feel like I'm dating myself.
- 37:20Speaker 7: Huh, we could you choose Flex's wife.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Not now Denise Denise? Yes, I don't know. I like him.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I'm trying to think.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I feel like.
