  Speaker 4: Football League is injury prone. And I bring it up because, well,

  Speaker 4: Jordan Tyson, who's a Saint selected number eight overall, he
• 3:28
  Speaker 4: has that tag. And that was like the only reason
• 3:32
  Speaker 4: that people were kind of cautious during the draft because
• 3:34
  Speaker 4: for me and for a lot of people he was
• 3:36
  Speaker 4: no doubt the number one receiver in this class. Now
• 3:38
  Speaker 4: he didn't go as a top receiver Tennessee, so wildly
• 3:43
  Speaker 4: enough they take a receiver at four. But if Tyson
• 3:45
  Speaker 4: would have been healthy, he probably would have been in
• 3:47
  Speaker 4: that spot. Now, he didn't miss a ton of games.
• 3:50
  Speaker 4: But he's had different injuries. He's had an ACL he's
• 3:54
  Speaker 4: had a shoulder, he's had soft tissue hamstring stuff, and
• 3:59
  Speaker 4: he's got labeled injury prone. And so like as a doctor,

  Speaker 4: like when you hear something like that, and look, rookie
• 4:05
  Speaker 4: Minni caamp, he did great the first day. We didn't
• 4:07
  Speaker 4: seem the second day, and it was like the Saints
• 4:09
  Speaker 4: like this is maintenance, this is like a plan, so whatever.

  Speaker 4: But when you hear somebody's injury prone, do you buy into.
• 4:16
  Speaker 3: That or is it like you just got bad luck.

  Speaker 5: Well, it's a great question, Like you said, it is
• 4:21
  Speaker 5: one we get asked a lot. It is one that
• 4:23
  Speaker 5: comes up all the time. And if you want my

  Speaker 5: opinion is there is a little bit of truth to
• 4:27
  Speaker 5: both the things you just said. Some guys really are
• 4:29
  Speaker 5: injury prone. Yeah, and then sometimes I do think there's
• 4:31
  Speaker 5: bad luck. And how do you kind of navigate through that,
• 4:34
  Speaker 5: and that's where it gets really really difficult. And I
• 4:36
  Speaker 5: think I think even with injury prone, I think there's
• 4:38
  Speaker 5: two categories there. I think you have a guy who
• 4:40
  Speaker 5: had a really bad injury, and then you worry about
• 4:42
  Speaker 5: that injury specifically, so somebody that has a say, you know,
• 4:45
  Speaker 5: one of the classic examples, there's two that I think
• 4:46
  Speaker 5: of that kind of went both directions. You think about
• 4:48
  Speaker 5: Marcus Lattimore, phenomenal in my opinion, of the best college
• 4:52
  Speaker 5: running backs you know during.
• 4:53
  Speaker 3: Our era, or could have in South Carolina.
• 4:55
  Speaker 5: South Carolina, had a dislocated knee, really bad knee injury,
• 5:00
  Speaker 5: ever ended up making the next level. This is a
• 5:01
  Speaker 5: guy who almost definitely is an NFL running back. I
• 5:03
  Speaker 5: mean I would I probably take away almost yeah, with
• 5:06
  Speaker 5: as good as he was prior to that injury, never
• 5:08
  Speaker 5: plays an NFL game, right, never able to because of
• 5:11
  Speaker 5: one injury which wasn't able to rehab it. And then
• 5:13
  Speaker 5: you look at the other side of that that coin,
• 5:14
  Speaker 5: you know, one of the classic examples, I bring up
• 5:16
  Speaker 5: a lot of Drew Brees who had a shoulder injury
• 5:18
  Speaker 5: and and literally one team did not clear him. The
• 5:21
  Speaker 5: Dolphins ends up a saint because of that. And if
• 5:24
  Speaker 5: you're the medical staff there, you know, you feel pretty
• 5:27
  Speaker 5: awful if you watch his career from that point forward.
• 5:30
  Speaker 5: So you have those guys, and then you have these
• 5:31
  Speaker 5: these other people that are that are maybe this more
• 5:33
  Speaker 5: you know, literally injury prone, predisposed to it for whatever reason.

  Speaker 5: They they have identified some specific genes that either protect
• 5:39
  Speaker 5: you from tending to ligament injury or increase your risk.
• 5:42
  Speaker 5: There there's guys that you see the repeated soft tissue
• 5:45
  Speaker 5: injuries like hamstrings, you know, in one or two hamstring strains. Okay,
• 5:48
  Speaker 5: that's one thing, but over and over you really got
• 5:50
  Speaker 5: to start asking yourself, you know, what's going on with
• 5:52
  Speaker 5: this guy? And and and sometimes maybe it's somebody that
• 5:55
  Speaker 5: doesn't do the right rehab in training, but sometimes there's
• 5:58
  Speaker 5: there's something to it for sure, and it's that's that's
• 5:59
  Speaker 5: a hard thing to figure out.

  Speaker 4: We always hear some guys, you know, Zion kind of
• 6:05
  Speaker 4: comes up in this conversation because he's had the soft
• 6:07
  Speaker 4: tissue like he's too explosive, like his you know, his
• 6:10
  Speaker 4: ham strings and all the soft tissue. They can't keep
• 6:12
  Speaker 4: up with how athletic and explosive and big he is
• 6:15
  Speaker 4: is their.
• 6:15
  Speaker 3: Truth to that.
• 6:16
  Speaker 5: I think there is, And I think that's something we've
• 6:18
  Speaker 5: talked about. For one, you know who talked about this
• 6:20
  Speaker 5: for you don't see a hamstring strain and typically and
• 6:22
  Speaker 5: somebody who's slow. You know, there's always a weird exception,
• 6:24
  Speaker 5: the guy who slips and falls and goes into a
• 6:26
  Speaker 5: split or something.

  Speaker 3: Yeah.

  Speaker 4: I always tell my story of the year, Nor's like,
• 6:29
  Speaker 4: you're not fast enough to pull your hamstring and back
• 6:32
  Speaker 4: out there.

  Speaker 5: And look, if you look at it, I will tell

  Speaker 5: you ninety percent in the hamstring injuries I see, especially
• 6:37
  Speaker 5: in young you know athletes, they're gonna be sprinters, They're
• 6:39
  Speaker 5: gonna be the wide receivers, the defensive backs, these big,
• 6:42
  Speaker 5: explosive type guys. Now he's big, but definitely explosive. Yeah.

  Speaker 5: And you look at a guy like Zion who looks
• 6:48
  Speaker 5: he's a genetic freak, at least from the standpoint off
• 6:50
  Speaker 5: he's he is big, he is fast, the guy can
• 6:52
  Speaker 5: jump out of the gym. I mean that just those
• 6:53
  Speaker 5: things shouldn't add up right, And and somewhere there's gonna
• 6:56
  Speaker 5: be just just physics that comes into play too. So
• 6:59
  Speaker 5: I think there's a lot of those factors that go
• 7:01
  Speaker 5: into it. I think we can overcome a lot of
• 7:03
  Speaker 5: it by doing really good rehab, having good medical practices,
• 7:07
  Speaker 5: and some of that you're going to get buy in
• 7:08
  Speaker 5: from the athletes. These guys who maybe have a little
• 7:10
  Speaker 5: bit more injury tendency, They really really got to do
• 7:12
  Speaker 5: their rehab. They really got to do things the right way.

  Speaker 4: But what about scheduling, Like so Jordan Tyson had a scheduled
• 7:18
  Speaker 4: day off and maintenance. Is that something that can actually
• 7:21
  Speaker 4: help like put them on a play because like at
• 7:23
  Speaker 4: the end of the day, like in a game, you're
• 7:25
  Speaker 4: not going to really have a maintenance plan. At least
• 7:27
  Speaker 4: if you do, it's it's not the best case scenario
• 7:30
  Speaker 4: for anybody involved. And so can you create a plan
• 7:34
  Speaker 4: that makes sense for the player to be able to
• 7:37
  Speaker 4: not put the strain on whatever it is, but also
• 7:40
  Speaker 4: make sure that he's ready to play, he or she
• 7:42
  Speaker 4: is ready to play.

  Speaker 5: You know, it's kind of a paradox that goes into that.

  Speaker 5: That's something we always talk about because you know that
• 7:49
  Speaker 5: chronic training, repetitive training.

  Speaker 4: Well, you know what I'm gonna say, to a point,

  Speaker 4: he's beneficial. You and I got calloused in old two days.

  Speaker 5: And I will tell you this, go back to that

  Speaker 5: era of sports. How many soft tissue injuries did you see,

  Speaker 5: especially after camp? So and I think we recognize there's
• 8:04
  Speaker 5: some truth that again look at look at basketball. Basketball

  Speaker 5: for me is the best example. I don't remember a superstar,
• 8:09
  Speaker 5: maybe outside of one freak injury, ever missed the playoff game.
• 8:13
  Speaker 3: You know, it happened.
• 8:13
  Speaker 5: It happened every now and then. But you go back
• 8:15
  Speaker 5: to the days of you know, you know, Michael Jordan,
• 8:17
  Speaker 5: Magic Johnston, Kareem, all these guys. Occasionally a guy has
• 8:19
  Speaker 5: a bad injury, one guy. How many superstars from all
• 8:23
  Speaker 5: these NBA teams right now are not playing because of
• 8:25
  Speaker 5: injuries and so and what's the one big difference. Well,
• 8:28
  Speaker 5: they are having all these maintens states, they're getting all
• 8:30
  Speaker 5: this time off, and I'm not saying they shouldn't, But
• 8:32
  Speaker 5: there is a part of me the kind of issue
• 8:33
  Speaker 5: there's well, there's a muscu skeletal callous and there is
• 8:36
  Speaker 5: a recognized phenomenon the chronic training. Now there is also
• 8:38
  Speaker 5: overuse injuries. So where do you find that that balance?
• 8:42
  Speaker 5: My personal opinion is I think there's more benefit to
• 8:45
  Speaker 5: doing more training, which isn't always a popular statement. That's
• 8:48
  Speaker 5: kind of how I see it. But on the flip
• 8:49
  Speaker 5: side of that, I do think you have to look
• 8:50
  Speaker 5: at your athletes as individuals. You have guys that you
• 8:53
  Speaker 5: realize like, hey, he is rehabing a hamstring or he
• 8:55
  Speaker 5: just had this. Yeah, it's probably good to get him
• 8:58
  Speaker 5: a day off. For this guy that's coming off of
• 8:59
  Speaker 5: an ankle injury. Do we really want him taking reps
• 9:01
  Speaker 5: on a full contact Tuesday when we really need him
• 9:04
  Speaker 5: playing on Saturday? You know? And there is you got
• 9:06
  Speaker 5: to find that line. I think there is a line there.

  Speaker 5: I do think modern sports we've just, like most things,
• 9:12
  Speaker 5: the pendulum sometimes swings too far.

  Speaker 5: I'm I'm the peak physical health I've ever been. Never

  Speaker 5: had a knee problem, never had a back problem. I

  Speaker 5: left like the last practice like like looking like an

  Speaker 5: old man, hobbling off the field just from running on

  Speaker 5: it for a week. And again, the turf back then

  Speaker 5: was way worse. It has gotten better.

  Speaker 3: But Joe played Virginia Tech.

  Speaker 5: That was uh well, that was the national championship. But

  Speaker 5: a couple years before that, we played Ohio State. Okay, yeah,

  Speaker 5: we played Ohio State. I think with the time we

  Speaker 5: end up finished season at two and they finished four

  Speaker 5: or five. They dropped down if the actually beat the time.
