- 0:19Speaker 1: today for today's Football at four, which, of course well
- 0:24Speaker 1: trade yesterday for the Eagles. Right before Football at four,
- 0:28Speaker 1: we touched on it with Jeff Mosher. But now that
- 0:30Speaker 1: the dust has settled, let's see what the Eagles secondary
- 0:35Speaker 1: looks like now with a new piece in the secondary.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan is here to explain on Football at four today.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Adam, welcome, Mike.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Let's do that because there's there's some information that's not
- 0:46Speaker 3: correct and we on our YouTube message board right a
- 0:50Speaker 3: community board's kind of funny. People are throwing a lot
- 0:53Speaker 3: of stuff out there, so which we're gonna We're gonna
- 0:55Speaker 3: help people learn this thing really, what it looks like,
- 0:57Speaker 3: the way the coaches and front offices look at it,
- 0:59Speaker 3: and where guys fit and so forth. So Michael Carter
- 1:02Speaker 3: is he's not a corner, He's a safety. Believe it
- 1:05Speaker 3: or not and a Nickel. So Michael Carter was a
- 1:09Speaker 3: safety at Duke. Talking to the Jets about him over
- 1:12Speaker 3: the years, they thought he had versatility to play inside.
- 1:16Speaker 3: First three years of his career with the Jets terrific,
- 1:19Speaker 3: probably a top five Nickel got the big contract extension,
- 1:23Speaker 3: and then they had the coaching change and in season
- 1:27Speaker 3: Robert Styler got canned, and then Michael Carter started getting
- 1:30Speaker 3: losing his job. Isaiah Oliver's a veteran corner, started cutting
- 1:33Speaker 3: into his role. And then this year the new staff
- 1:37Speaker 3: was down on Carter and they moved Jarvis Brownley over him,
- 1:41Speaker 3: who was acquired via trade by from the Titans a
- 1:44Speaker 3: month ago. So he was on his way out. They
- 1:47Speaker 3: didn't want him. They made it clear to anyone they're
- 1:49Speaker 3: trying to move him. They got next to nothing for them.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But you know what, he's a young guy, talented, real smart.
- 1:55Speaker 3: He's got to learn the scheme. Yet, I think we're
- 1:57Speaker 3: running a little bit too fast with Dejane moving to corner. Yes,
- 2:01Speaker 3: and their base defense at early downs that's where Degene
- 2:04Speaker 3: lines up. I'm not saying that de Gene might not
- 2:07Speaker 3: transfer over to corner more than Nickel. That might happen,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but let's just cool their jets first. Let's just let
- 2:14Speaker 3: Carter learn. The scheme we are understanding is he's not
- 2:18Speaker 3: playing corner. He's playing nickel, and they're probably going to
- 2:21Speaker 3: cross stream a safety. We'll see what happens in practice
- 2:23Speaker 3: this week, but that's our understanding. I think what happens Mike.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Well, as you know Adam. A lot of people associate.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Right, but it's not. It's it's really it's really I
- 2:37Speaker 3: call it like, okay, so Vic Vic and I don't
- 2:39Speaker 3: agree with one thing. He calls olb's edges. Well, Olb's
- 2:44Speaker 3: it depends what scheme you're in now. For VIC scheme,
- 2:47Speaker 3: Olb's are edges. Okay, that's what they are right in
- 2:50Speaker 3: the Steeler scheme, Like CJ. Watt is an edge rusher,
- 2:56Speaker 3: but they call him at LB. They do call him
- 2:58Speaker 3: a linebacker. I wouldn't call him line But the bottom
- 3:01Speaker 3: line is VIC calls Nichols Nichols because they're not. Although look,
- 3:05Speaker 3: you've watched Cooper Degene. He's no ordinary nickel. You'll see
- 3:08Speaker 3: him cover a tight end. He will cover receivers and
- 3:12Speaker 3: that's why they play him in base on the outside. Yes,
- 3:14Speaker 3: he's an ad in defender against the run, but it's
- 3:16Speaker 3: not like they drop back. He won't drop out to
- 3:18Speaker 3: cover somebody. So that the Nichols right now, Mike, let's
- 3:22Speaker 3: move on. Here are Dejene and Michael Carter mac McWilliams. Unfortunately,
- 3:27Speaker 3: Mike barn something on four scenes is not going to contribute.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I'm a little surprised by it what we've seen so far.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I that look, the fact that they trade Michael Carter
- 3:38Speaker 3: gave you the answers to test. Nobody has to guess
- 3:39Speaker 3: what's happened here. Mike mc mcgwiams is not factoring in.
- 3:42Speaker 3: He counts against the roster of fifty three, but he's
- 3:44Speaker 3: not playing. So you off season, get him into an
- 3:48Speaker 3: off season, full off season, see what happens. He's a
- 3:50Speaker 3: talented kid, he was like him, but he's not factoring.
- 3:53Speaker 3: So right now the nickels are Degene and Carter. No,
- 3:56Speaker 3: mccouba does not count as a nickel. He's not a nickel.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Now.
- 3:58Speaker 3: He can do it down the line. Who knows my
- 4:02Speaker 3: confuture years, but right now he's just as sae. If
- 4:04Speaker 3: you know, those are the nickels, let's go. Let's go
- 4:06Speaker 3: to cornerback. This is where people are confused. Mitchell Dejeene,
- 4:11Speaker 3: Jackson's got the concushion. We'll see if he gets cleared
- 4:13Speaker 3: for next week. And Ringo, those are your four who
- 4:16Speaker 3: are on the fifty three. Bennett's not on the fifty three.
- 4:19Speaker 3: He practiced last week, but they've not activated him yet.
- 4:22Speaker 3: He's going to be activated at some point before the
- 4:24Speaker 3: twenty one day window expires. Barges set back, of course,
- 4:28Speaker 3: with his parictorial strain. So look, they'll have five corners.
- 4:32Speaker 3: But here's the question, Mike, if you want to win
- 4:33Speaker 3: a Super Bowl, this is what I ask people, and
- 4:36Speaker 3: I know people in our message Fordric com Pulley mixed
- 4:38Speaker 3: on this one. We got the Ringo truthers or although
- 4:41Speaker 3: there are not a lot left, there used to be
- 4:43Speaker 3: about five hundred down about four or five of them.
- 4:45Speaker 3: They still believe the ones are holding on. They still
- 4:48Speaker 3: believe that that guy could be a starting quality corner.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Nobody who run the league believes that, but the truthers
- 4:54Speaker 3: believe it. So those people don't care about them Eagles
- 4:56Speaker 3: adding another quarter. They don't think they need to that
- 4:58Speaker 3: people really understand what Ringo is and isn't understand he's
- 5:01Speaker 3: got certain limitations. He's got three of them. Lower body's stiffness,
- 5:05Speaker 3: connected that with his transitioning, and he's real trouble stopping
- 5:08Speaker 3: and starting. That's he's a fourth corner. Really, if you
- 5:11Speaker 3: have your brothers, you could play him as your third
- 5:14Speaker 3: rather out of your fourth. He's starting right now because
- 5:16Speaker 3: they have nobody better. They're not good enough at corner
- 5:18Speaker 3: opposite Mitchell. That's that's a fact. That is why Degene
- 5:21Speaker 3: may wind up playing a lot more at corner than
- 5:23Speaker 3: Vick would like him not to, would like him to.
- 5:25Speaker 3: That's you got to do what's best for your football
- 5:27Speaker 3: to Whether Vic wants to do it or not, it's
- 5:30Speaker 3: his call, by the way, and eventually they if you
- 5:33Speaker 3: want to be a super Bowl team, you've got to
- 5:35Speaker 3: get a right corner who who could stand up and look,
- 5:38Speaker 3: let's let's put it, let's move this forward. We'll talk
- 5:40Speaker 3: more about this next week when we get ready for
- 5:41Speaker 3: Green Bay, which would be a great test of money night.
- 5:44Speaker 3: What if Ringo's starting right? Did you see what? Do
- 5:46Speaker 3: you see what Jordan Love did last week to the Steelers?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Did you see that tore them apart? Do you not
- 5:52Speaker 3: think David by the way, when they're happy, they be
- 5:54Speaker 3: receiver corps. They have the deepest receiver Recuier Slave, by
- 5:57Speaker 3: the way, is near the end of his great career.
- 5:58Speaker 3: By the way, he's not All Famer, but he was
- 6:01Speaker 3: a great Eagle. And what are better trades Howie Rhythm
- 6:03Speaker 3: has ever made. But look, they cut him for a reason.
- 6:05Speaker 3: He's near the end of thirty three years old. They're
- 6:08Speaker 3: struggling their back end. Loved to arm a part in
- 6:10Speaker 3: the fourth quarter. He was incredible. So it's a problem.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I'm just telling you that the right cornerback problem is
- 6:16Speaker 3: a problem if you want to win a Super Bowl.
- 6:17Speaker 3: So those your corners and your safety's are Macuba Black
- 6:20Speaker 3: and ship Sydney Brown is you know he he's averaging
- 6:23Speaker 3: seven snaps on defense a game. That kind of tells
- 6:25Speaker 3: you what the coaches think of him. And Marcus Apps
- 6:28Speaker 3: is back.
- 6:31Speaker 2: There are you dropped for half a second?
- 6:35Speaker 3: There?
- 6:35Speaker 2: You said, Marcus back is where we lost you?
- 6:37Speaker 3: Right right? Marcus Eps's back is their force safety. Uh
- 6:41Speaker 3: And they only play Sidney Brown seven snaps a game
- 6:43Speaker 3: on defense, so they have enough players there. I'm very
- 6:46Speaker 3: interesting what they're thinking is with Carter here, how he
- 6:48Speaker 3: factors in the safety. Do they need another one?
- 6:50Speaker 1: No?
- 6:50Speaker 3: But my sense is Vic has never been a big
- 6:54Speaker 3: Sydney Brown fan. Just based on his usage, it's clear
- 6:58Speaker 3: that he's not. And we're gonna see what they do
- 7:01Speaker 3: with Michael Carter this week. So that's that. I'm just
- 7:04Speaker 3: I'm very disappointed with mac McWilliams usage. It's clear it's
- 7:07Speaker 3: a practice issue. He's not good enough. I get that,
- 7:10Speaker 3: But boy, I know they like him. I just don't
- 7:12Speaker 3: know what's happened with them. Look, I wasn't expecting to
- 7:14Speaker 3: play a lot.
- 7:15Speaker 2: No, I agree with you.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I liked him too, and I thought he'd be a surprise,
- 7:18Speaker 1: but they just even haven't even activated him there. But
- 7:22Speaker 1: so it sounds like a lot of people initially saw
- 7:24Speaker 1: Carter figured well, he plays a lot of nickel slot
- 7:27Speaker 1: corner and that Degene could bounce to the outside. But
- 7:30Speaker 1: that's not necessarily how this will play.
- 7:32Speaker 3: It could be, but could it, Mike. I mean, realistically,
- 7:35Speaker 3: if they want to win a Super Bowl and they don't.
- 7:37Speaker 3: By the way, the trade deadline is Tuesday, we're not
- 7:39Speaker 3: rolling out a corner. I just definitely on They're definitely
- 7:42Speaker 3: the market. Other teams have told us that they're looking
- 7:44Speaker 3: at edge. But if they don't make a trade for
- 7:46Speaker 3: a true corner, what choice does Vic Havran If you
- 7:49Speaker 3: want to what, Mike, what would you do?
- 7:53Speaker 2: I love Degene at nickel corner.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I hate none out of that spot because of the
- 7:58Speaker 1: way he is up against the run and listen. I
- 8:01Speaker 1: can't really judge him as an outside corner because I
- 8:04Speaker 1: really haven't seen him do it enough. Like we all
- 8:06Speaker 1: just assumed that he's going to run and cover some
- 8:09Speaker 1: of these elite receivers.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Maybe he can't. I don't know that. I don't have
- 8:12Speaker 2: that answer.
- 8:13Speaker 3: That's fair, But Mike, what's your recourse here if they
- 8:15Speaker 3: don't make a trade. Are you comfort with Keiler Ringo
- 8:18Speaker 3: being a starting corner to the super Bowl?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Absolutely not Ringo to me, what are they going to do?
- 8:25Speaker 3: No? Ringo to me, don't understand. They don't understand. Like
- 8:29Speaker 3: but Jerry Jackson, come on, he can't. He's doing the
- 8:31Speaker 3: Animo's career. Like what we what are we talking about here?
- 8:34Speaker 3: That's my point, Mike, I hear you Degene as dynamic
- 8:37Speaker 3: as a nickel, But let's they drafted to play corner.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I get he changed, things changed, It's Okay, they changed
- 8:44Speaker 3: their mind based on need, and he wasn't ready to
- 8:47Speaker 3: play corner initially because he came in with an injury.
- 8:51Speaker 3: But you got to do what's best for a football team.
- 8:54Speaker 3: That's why. But I but this discussion, the reason why
- 8:56Speaker 3: I wanted to have it with you is that's why
- 8:59Speaker 3: it's not set in stone. We're just assuming that the
- 9:01Speaker 3: gene will transfer over to corner full time. I'm not
- 9:04Speaker 3: saying he won't play more there. But on your point,
- 9:06Speaker 3: he's so good in nickel, let's just see what happens.
- 9:09Speaker 3: The problem is, like they don't have a lot of choices.
- 9:11Speaker 3: None of them are very good other than Dejina corner.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And then you may ge a fair point he hasn't
- 9:16Speaker 3: He hasn't really played it in passing situations. He's played
- 9:19Speaker 3: it mostly in base down. So it's it's not easy, Mike,
- 9:23Speaker 3: But I wanted to walk through it because I think
- 9:25Speaker 3: people are sort of conflating things. And one guy's like, oh,
- 9:28Speaker 3: they've they've started back up before there in one or
- 9:31Speaker 3: other positions are one, so that that's okay. No, it's
- 9:33Speaker 3: not okay. That's not the way teams think. It's comical
- 9:35Speaker 3: when people think that way to their opinion.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So they do go make a trade.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Have you heard the rumor today which was what's the
- 9:44Speaker 1: latest one? Three first round picks for Miles Garrett?
- 9:49Speaker 2: That was? That was Charles Robinson.
- 9:51Speaker 3: It wasn't some like Charles is the front of mine.
- 9:56Speaker 1: He was on Nashville radio today and I don't know
- 9:58Speaker 1: that he was reporting it, but he was saying that,
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know, maybe I don't know, Josh, you have that audio?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Can you do? You have that cute up? If you do,
- 10:05Speaker 2: just let me know in my ear. But yeah, I
- 10:07Speaker 2: love to hear that.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I know charw Charles is a pretty responsible guy, so
- 10:12Speaker 3: maybe he was just speckling what it would take though.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So Josh has the audio here here.
- 10:16Speaker 4: It is rumor going around and I have not heard
- 10:19Speaker 4: it out of the Eagle, but I've heard it from
- 10:22Speaker 4: a couple of other I mean like high ranking people
- 10:24Speaker 4: and other teams that are clearly on the phones that
- 10:29Speaker 4: you know Howie Roseman and the Eagles are super hot
- 10:31Speaker 4: after Miles Garrett and how he'd give up like three
- 10:33Speaker 4: first round picks for him.
- 10:36Speaker 3: There you go, oh, all right, all right, So he's
- 10:39Speaker 3: hearing it from other teams. Look, Mike, they were in
- 10:41Speaker 3: on Michael Parsons. We know about that, Jeff, and I've
- 10:44Speaker 3: been saying on so many of our shows for two months.
- 10:46Speaker 3: They're they're they've not given up the hook to make
- 10:48Speaker 3: a trade. It could be Bradley Chubb. It could be
- 10:54Speaker 3: someone else available from another team. Bradley Chub's available, by
- 10:57Speaker 3: the way, play for victing two spots. Who knows, could
- 11:00Speaker 3: be Jaalen Phillips or Chop Robinson. So it could be
- 11:02Speaker 3: any It could be a number of guys. They have
- 11:05Speaker 3: enough players at edge once BG comes back. But I
- 11:08Speaker 3: say that, do we know what BG looks like yet?
- 11:10Speaker 3: He's thirty seven years old.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Nolan Dick says he looks okay, he looks okay. That's
- 11:14Speaker 2: what Vic said, right, Yeah.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I mean we don't know yet, but we even BG
- 11:19Speaker 3: said this no expectations because he doesn't know. It's it's
- 11:23Speaker 3: it's about having high end quality players and if you
- 11:26Speaker 3: could get that. Now people saying, oh, they they went
- 11:29Speaker 3: with average guys. That sir, jee Josh Schwetz on an
- 11:32Speaker 3: average player like well, first of all, he's a not
- 11:35Speaker 3: a great pass charger. He's better than average, just a
- 11:37Speaker 3: good football player. BG before he got hurt last for
- 11:40Speaker 3: the best game he got was that he had in
- 11:42Speaker 3: the last five years was against the Rams when he
- 11:44Speaker 3: got hurt, and Milt Williams was like, we have to
- 11:47Speaker 3: remember how many players the leaguers have lost on defense.
- 11:49Speaker 3: It's hard to make that up.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Agree, but you know, that would be interesting.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Three first round picks for Miles Garrett, who had five
- 11:57Speaker 1: sacks the other day in a game, and that would
- 11:58Speaker 1: probably look good in the field.
- 12:00Speaker 3: He's still lost, right, Yeah, Here's that's the point, though, is.
- 12:03Speaker 1: They still I listen, I said before he agreed to
- 12:06Speaker 1: sign that deal for forty million when he wanted to
- 12:10Speaker 1: get out of there because he said he wanted to win,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and then he signed that deal. So you know what
- 12:13Speaker 1: you reap with yourself, buddy.
- 12:15Speaker 3: They're terrible. They don't have a quarterback. They've had a
- 12:18Speaker 3: number of injuries on defense. But yeah, Mike, here's the thing,
- 12:22Speaker 3: obviously that a trade like that. The Eagles roster overall
- 12:26Speaker 3: is pretty it's young, which you like. Moles Goats probably
- 12:30Speaker 3: got three really good years left in him. They've always,
- 12:33Speaker 3: I know for a fact, they've always had a fascionation
- 12:35Speaker 3: with him. They really have. They they've practiced against him
- 12:37Speaker 3: a number of times played against him. He's still he's
- 12:40Speaker 3: the best defensive line, best age rusher overall in the
- 12:44Speaker 3: NFL based on everything that he does. Plays inside and
- 12:46Speaker 3: nickel if you want him to. But I mean, look
- 12:49Speaker 3: that Browns have made a clearer they're not traded him.
- 12:50Speaker 3: They met Andrew Berry made that clearer when he thore
- 12:54Speaker 3: off every team that called. They're not trading him. I
- 12:57Speaker 3: still believe that's the case. But man, and until they
- 13:00Speaker 3: get a quarterback, the Browns, they're going to be awful.
- 13:02Speaker 3: That's just the way it is, all right.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Lastly, the trade deadlines Tuesday. What other positions or position
- 13:09Speaker 1: do they need to address?
- 13:11Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. I don't know what to make
- 13:14Speaker 3: of Brett Toath, Mike, we you and I have not
- 13:16Speaker 3: talked about this yet. He was unbelievable in this last game. Mike,
- 13:22Speaker 3: It's one of the most amazing. That it's only one game,
- 13:24Speaker 3: let's make it clear. But I've not seen a guy
- 13:27Speaker 3: who was so poor before. He never showed any progress
- 13:31Speaker 3: on the field like in games. I'll talk about practice
- 13:34Speaker 3: and then looks like an elite player for one game. Now,
- 13:38Speaker 3: are the Eagles really going to buy in for one
- 13:39Speaker 3: game that this guy now is dependable to be Jergens
- 13:42Speaker 3: backup at center and be the top backup right guard.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I don't agree with it, but you know they I've
- 13:51Speaker 3: just known the way they think and Stout this is
- 13:53Speaker 3: Stout skuy Stout kind of found them. He certainly had
- 13:58Speaker 3: a hand in it from what I understand. So I
- 14:00Speaker 3: have of a stinking suspicion they think that that they're
- 14:02Speaker 3: good with Toth. It was Mike got I mean, it
- 14:05Speaker 3: was just amazing, the athleticism for folks who get to
- 14:07Speaker 3: watch the old twenty two. I watched it on Tuesday.
- 14:10Speaker 3: My mouth dropped. I couldn't believe it. I'm like, who
- 14:12Speaker 3: is this guy? I want to throw a transformation to
- 14:14Speaker 3: one game? It's real, by the way, I mean, what
- 14:17Speaker 3: he did was not it wasn't luck. It was just
- 14:20Speaker 3: it was amazing. So uh. I again, corner and edge Edge,
- 14:24Speaker 3: especially the Eagles, may think they could get away with
- 14:28Speaker 3: what they have a corner.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I don't.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I don't believe it, and I don't agree with it,
- 14:30Speaker 3: and other teams don't. But we'll see what happens. And
- 14:34Speaker 3: then other than that, Mike No, I mean, honestly, there's
- 14:39Speaker 3: nothing that they would need de tackle. They're okay with
- 14:43Speaker 3: I mean there, ty ROMs is starting to play a
- 14:46Speaker 3: little bit. You know, byer Young has been a nice
- 14:47Speaker 3: fine for them. They claimed off waivers last year from
- 14:49Speaker 3: the Raiders. They're okay there. But Edge, they got to
- 14:53Speaker 3: get that. They really need somebody else, Mike, can you
- 14:55Speaker 3: Jaalari chart which And by the way, the other thing
- 14:57Speaker 3: is if they were playing camel a true Edge else
- 15:00Speaker 3: when Glen's up in the ch he's not there, he's
