- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13In our current series, Imagining Work, we're asking
- 0:16a question.
- 0:17What story about work am I living in?
- 0:20Because there are lots of stories about work,
- 0:22but we want to live inside the story
- 0:23about work that God is telling on the
- 0:25pages of the Bible.
- 0:27So right now we're looking at key images
- 0:29from the Bible, and today's image is Friend.
- 0:37When we think about friends in the workplace,
- 0:39we often think of co-workers, maybe particular
- 0:42people that we connect with that we feel
- 0:44like are helpful to us in terms of
- 0:46the work itself and emotionally.
- 0:48And this kind of gets at two sides
- 0:50of the coin with friendship, and we could
- 0:52ask it in terms of what does it
- 0:53mean to love somebody else?
- 0:55Because at some level we know that our
- 0:57friends love us, they care about us.
- 0:58And a philosophical definition of love, this has
- 1:02been used by C.S. Lewis, by Dallas
- 1:04Willard, by others, is to will the good
- 1:07of the other person.
- 1:09So the person you're loving, you're willing, they're
- 1:11good.
- 1:12And that may be different than how we
- 1:14tend to use the word love.
- 1:15So Dallas Willard would joke like, when somebody
- 1:18says they love chocolate cake, like, no, you
- 1:20don't love chocolate cake, you're going to eat
- 1:22chocolate cake.
- 1:23You're not willing the good of chocolate cake.
- 1:25Chocolate cake, if it had consciousness, would be
- 1:27afraid of you, right?
- 1:27When you love somebody, you're not just using
- 1:31them for your purposes, like you're using a
- 1:32piece of cake to satisfy your appetite for
- 1:35delicious chocolatey goodness.
- 1:37You're seeking that person's good.
- 1:39You're willing, they're good.
- 1:41You're choosing to promote what is in their
- 1:43best interest as you have opportunity.
- 1:47But then when we think about how do
- 1:48we actually seek the good of other people,
- 1:50there's two sides to that coin.
- 1:52And this is an oversimplification, but we can
- 1:54think of it particularly in the work context
- 1:56as we either seek their good through productivity
- 2:00or we seek their good through presence.
- 2:04And we can think of examples of both
- 2:06of these things.
- 2:06So on the productivity side, there's a great
- 2:08example from this book about personality called The
- 2:11Road Back to You by Ian Morgan-Kron
- 2:12and Suzanne Stebbiel.
- 2:14And they're talking about a personality type that
- 2:17isn't always the most affectionate, somebody who maybe
- 2:19doesn't give you a lot of hugs all
- 2:20the time.
- 2:21And here's an example they give of how
- 2:24a father might show love.
- 2:26What, you wanted more hugs?
- 2:28Remember how after that hurricane, yours was the
- 2:30only house in the neighborhood with power and
- 2:32heat because years earlier, your dad brought a
- 2:34backup generator and regularly checked to make sure
- 2:37it was properly serviced and fueled?
- 2:39Sounds like a hug to me.
- 2:41So this gets at that productivity side of
- 2:44love, right?
- 2:45Maybe you don't have the most affectionate dad
- 2:47in the world, but he sure as heck
- 2:48gonna make sure that your home is taken
- 2:50care of in really practical ways.
- 2:52And that really is a way to show
- 2:54care for someone.
- 2:55And obviously in the work context, we experience
- 2:57this as well.
- 2:58At work, the first way we can be
- 3:00a good friend to our coworkers is by
- 3:02doing a good job at our job.
- 3:04That's what helps our coworkers in the practical
- 3:07sense of the work they're trying to get
- 3:09done during the work day as well.
- 3:12And sometimes somebody might be really emotionally attuned
- 3:16to us, but we actually don't feel loved
- 3:18because of the way that they're not able
- 3:20to respond to the practical things.
- 3:22So I remember an experience where a friend
- 3:24of mine, he was really tuned in to
- 3:26me when I was having a bad day.
- 3:28He was emotionally present.
- 3:29He was like, oh man, I'm so sorry
- 3:31you're going through that, right?
- 3:33But that friend also did not respond to
- 3:35an email I had sent him about an
- 3:36urgent work priority.
- 3:38And so later that day, I was really
- 3:39frustrated with that friend.
- 3:39I was like, you know, I love that
- 3:41you're so empathetic, but like what would really
- 3:44help me today is if you reply to
- 3:46that email on a timely manner, right?
- 3:47Now you're getting a sense of a little
- 3:48bit of my personality in that as well.
- 3:50Part of what helps me feel loved is
- 3:53when people are doing the work when we're
- 3:55pulling together as a team that actually literally
- 3:58helps me feel loved by my team members.
- 4:01And so that productivity side is an important
- 4:03side of how we promote the good of
- 4:05somebody else's we actually need to do our
- 4:07work in the workplace.
- 4:08We need to do our job well.
- 4:11But of course, there is the other side
- 4:12of the coin and I said sometimes we
- 4:14really need the hug.
- 4:16Sometimes we need somebody who's going to be
- 4:18empathetic, who's going to be attuned to us.
- 4:19And often our friends that work are those
- 4:22people who can tune into us and who
- 4:24can understand what's going on for us.
- 4:26How is this person feeling today?
- 4:29And one Hallmark of people like this is
- 4:31that they are willing to interrupt productivity for
- 4:34the sake of presence.
- 4:36Somebody has a lot of things on their
- 4:38to-do list.
- 4:39They have a lot of things that they
- 4:39need to get done, but they're willing to
- 4:42interrupt that productivity in order to pay attention
- 4:45to the person in front of them.
- 4:47And so there's a tension here between productivity
- 4:49and presence if you take the time a
- 4:51few minutes to really tune into somebody maybe
- 4:53you will reply to that email a little
- 4:55bit later than you otherwise would and so
- 4:57it takes discernment in the moment to know
- 4:59how long should you take to see how
- 5:01somebody is doing to check in with them,
- 5:03but we need both of these things in
- 5:05order to love our co-workers.
- 5:06Well, we need to love them by doing
- 5:09our jobs.
- 5:09Well productivity and we need to love them
- 5:11by being present to them being empathetic seeing
- 5:14what's really going on with them.
- 5:17And we both need these kind of friends
- 5:19at work too.
- 5:20This might be something that's a good exercise
- 5:22for reflection for you.
- 5:24Think about who in your workplace loves you
- 5:26really well by being productive and who in
- 5:28your workplace loves you really well by being
- 5:30present and maybe if you're lucky you have
- 5:33somebody in your workplace who loves you well
- 5:34in both ways and I think that's what
- 5:37we should aspire to to be people who
- 5:39love other people in both ways where we
- 5:41love people well by being productive.
- 5:43We love people well by being present.
- 5:45That's what makes us true friends of our
- 5:48friends at work.
- 5:50But in order to do that we need
- 5:51our need for friendship to be met more
- 5:53deeply and ultimately that need is met by
- 5:57our friendship with Jesus.
- 5:59Jesus is a friend to us in the
- 6:01middle of our workday and he's a friend
- 6:03in both ways.
- 6:04This might be novel for you to think
- 6:06about but Jesus is really productive.
- 6:09Jesus is good at getting things done and
- 6:11Jesus is also an expert in your field.
- 6:13Whatever your field is whether you're driving a
- 6:15bus or designing a machine or operating a
- 6:19machine or teaching a classroom Jesus knows everything
- 6:22there is to know about that and Jesus
- 6:24can help you with the productivity goals of
- 6:27your workplace.
- 6:28He can give you the insight the wisdom
- 6:29that you need to get the job done.
- 6:32But of course Jesus is also present with
- 6:34us.
- 6:35We think of the final words of the
- 6:37Great Commission in Matthew 28 when Jesus says
- 6:39behold I am with you always.
- 6:42Jesus really meant it.
- 6:44He really is with us always.
- 6:46That means he's with us in the details
- 6:48of our workday.
- 6:50And it's one thing to know that to
- 6:52know the theological fact that Jesus is present
- 6:55with us.
- 6:56It's another thing to remember it to bring
- 6:59Jesus presence into our conscious awareness during our
- 7:02workday.
- 7:04And so the question is how can we
- 7:05do that?
- 7:06How can we bring Jesus's presence before our
- 7:09mind and before our heart in the nitty
- 7:11-gritty moments of our day?
- 7:13The traditional Christian phrase for this is practicing
- 7:15the presence of God.
- 7:17That's a title of a book by a
- 7:19French monk named Brother Lawrence from several centuries
- 7:22ago the practice of the presence of God.
- 7:25But it's also found its way into many
- 7:28different contexts.
- 7:29And I just want to talk about in
- 7:31a really practical way.
- 7:32How do we bring the presence of Jesus
- 7:33before our mind at work?
- 7:35One thing is that boring and repetitive tasks
- 7:38can be our friend, right?
- 7:40They can help us in terms of remembering
- 7:42that Jesus is with us because they allow
- 7:44us the mental space to think about something
- 7:46else besides the task at hand.
- 7:48When you're doing a boring and repetitive task,
- 7:50you have that sort of back-of-the
- 7:51-mind space free.
- 7:53Great example of this is a woman I
- 7:56know named Lindsay.
- 7:57She is a gastrointestinal tech at a colonoscopy
- 8:00clinic and they rotate the duty of cleaning
- 8:04off the colonoscopy probes after the fact.
- 8:06So it is a literally crappy part of
- 8:08the job.
- 8:08So that's why they rotate it from person
- 8:10to person.
- 8:11But Lindsay told me that she has had
- 8:13the richest prayer times at work when it's
- 8:15her turn to wash those colonoscopy probes because
- 8:19it's a boring, yucky, repetitive task.
- 8:21It doesn't take that much mental effort to
- 8:23do the work of the cleaning.
- 8:25And so she has this freedom while she's
- 8:27doing that to pray, to be aware of
- 8:29the presence of Jesus, to pray for her
- 8:31co-workers, to pray about whatever is on
- 8:32her mind and her heart that day.
- 8:35Similarly, I think of someone I met named
- 8:37Larry who's an owner-operator driving trucks.
- 8:40And so he works in logistics, he does
- 8:42transportation, and he says that he will pray
- 8:44with other people while he's driving.
- 8:46Because, you know, the task of driving doesn't
- 8:48take all of his mental energy.
- 8:50He'll call a friend who he knows is
- 8:51free at the same time, and they'll pray
- 8:53over the phone while he's driving.
- 8:56So you can think about your own workplace.
- 8:58What are those opportunities you have when you
- 9:00have boring or repetitive tasks?
- 9:01How can you bring the presence of Jesus
- 9:03before your mind during those moments?
- 9:07And someone who's been a leader in this
- 9:09that's been helpful to me is a missionary
- 9:11named Frank Labach.
- 9:12He worked in the early 20th century in
- 9:14India and in the Philippines.
- 9:16He's primarily known for his work in literacy,
- 9:18helping people learn how to read.
- 9:20But he also proclaimed the gospel and helped
- 9:21people become followers of Jesus.
- 9:24But one thing that he practiced in his
- 9:26own prayer life is what he came to
- 9:28call the game with minutes.
- 9:30And his question was, how often can I
- 9:32turn my mind toward God while I'm even
- 9:35doing other tasks?
- 9:36And so eventually in his game with minutes
- 9:38was, can I bring God into my conscious
- 9:40awareness for one second out of every minute,
- 9:43right?
- 9:4360 times per hour.
- 9:45Now, that may seem really intense.
- 9:46Like, I'm nowhere close to that in my
- 9:48own life with God.
- 9:49You know, I may be a couple of
- 9:50times per hour, maybe every 15 minutes on
- 9:52a good day, I'm consciously remembering that God
- 9:54is with me.
- 9:56But this isn't meant to be something that
- 9:57inspires anxiety of, like, oh, I got to
- 9:59remember God all the time or else I'm
- 10:00doing a bad job.
- 10:01This is something that we can just lean
- 10:02into because Jesus is with us.
- 10:05We can receive his presence with us while
- 10:08we're working on other tasks.
- 10:10I think about how my wife, Katie, who's
- 10:13in grad school at the moment, she will
- 10:15be working on her homework in the living
- 10:17room while I'm reading a book or typing
- 10:20away on a blog post or something.
- 10:22And I'm not primarily focused on Katie's presence,
- 10:25but I'm aware of her presence even while
- 10:27I'm reading my book.
- 10:29I'm aware of her presence even while I'm
- 10:30writing my blog post.
- 10:31I know that she's there with me in
- 10:33the room.
- 10:34And I might, if I read something really
- 10:35funny, you know, I'm reading some Jane Austen
- 10:37novels right now and sometimes a character just
- 10:39has like a really witty line.
- 10:40I'll pause and I'll turn to Katie and
- 10:42I'll read the line to her, you know,
- 10:43interrupt her homework for a bit for a
- 10:45moment of laughter.
- 10:46Well, that can be what our relationship with
- 10:48God is like during the work day.
- 10:50That Jesus is present to us and we
- 10:52can just welcome his presence, remembering that he's
- 10:55with us during the day.
- 10:56And that allows him to truly be our
- 10:59friend.
- 11:00He is that good friend who's with us
- 11:02in the productivity of the work day and
- 11:04he's with us by his presence in the
- 11:06middle of the work day.
- 11:08And when we receive the friendship of Jesus
- 11:09in that way more and more, we can
- 11:11become a good friend like him to all
- 11:13the people around us.
- 11:17Lord Jesus, you are the true friend.
- 11:20You walk with us in our work day,
- 11:22you go before us and you're right there
- 11:24ready to be productive with us, to be
- 11:27present with us and all the tasks that
- 11:28we're tackling and all the relationships that we're
- 11:31facing and all the ways that we're trying
- 11:32to be a good friend to the people
- 11:34around us.
- 11:35We ask that you would be our friend
- 11:37first so we can rest in you, rest
- 11:39in your love and really love the people
- 11:41around us.
- 11:43Do your work in us as we do
- 11:45our work with you.
- 11:47Thanks for listening.
