- 0:01Speaker 1: On an otherwise uneventful Thursday afternoon in May twenty nineteen,
- 0:05Speaker 1: fifteen year old Kaylee Juga returned home from school with
- 0:09Speaker 1: her mother. They turned on some music, joked around, and relaxed.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Minutes later, a hooded figure dressed all in black entered
- 0:19Speaker 1: the house undetected through the open garage door. A doorbell
- 0:24Speaker 1: camera across the street recorded the sound of gunfire. Seven
- 0:28Speaker 1: shots rang out across the usually quiet, in peaceful neighborhood.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Moments later, the hooded figure ran from the scene, mother
- 0:38Speaker 1: and daughter still inside, fighting for their lives.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:48Speaker 1: There, I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just Thought Lounge. Today's
- 0:52Speaker 1: case is a heartbreaking story of youth obsession and ultimately violence.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Let's take a look at Just before two pm on Thursday,
- 1:16Speaker 1: May ninth, twenty nineteen, Stephanie Juga left her home in Kenosha, Wisconsin,
- 1:21Speaker 1: to collect her fifteen year old daughter, Kaylee from school.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Stephanie ran her photography business from the house, which allowed
- 1:28Speaker 1: her to do the school run both ways on most
- 1:31Speaker 1: days of the week. She and husband Nick had three children.
- 1:36Speaker 1: The eldest, Tyler, was already out of the house. Their youngest,
- 1:40Speaker 1: eleven year old Mason, attended a local primary school. At
- 1:44Speaker 1: roughly two twenty pm, Stephanie and Kaylee pulled into their drive,
- 1:48Speaker 1: opened to the garage door, and entered the house. Inside,
- 1:53Speaker 1: they played some music. This was their time together at home,
- 1:57Speaker 1: the time each day when just the girls are alone
- 2:00Speaker 1: in the house. They danced and joked around a few
- 2:05Speaker 1: minutes following their return, Kayleie went to her room to
- 2:08Speaker 1: get ready for a shift at her part time job.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Stephanie retreated to the master bathroom to finish drying her hair. Then,
- 2:16Speaker 1: at three pm, the sound of gunshots pierced through the
- 2:20Speaker 1: noise of the hair dryer, followed by screaming. At three
- 2:24Speaker 1: o two pm, Stephanie placed a call to nine one one.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Locked in the master suite, Stephanie was unaware of the
- 2:45Speaker 1: severity of Kaylee's injuries. She feared leaving the room in
- 2:49Speaker 1: case the shooter was still in the house. However, Stephanie
- 2:53Speaker 1: believed that she knew exactly who the shooter was, her
- 2:57Speaker 1: daughter's ex boyfriend.
- 3:00Speaker 2: My friend.
- 3:03Speaker 3: He is now old, are you Oh my god, Oh
- 3:15Speaker 3: my god, I know I'm getting him out. You don't
- 3:21Speaker 3: know where he is?
- 3:22Speaker 4: No, I did go, I mean, Stephanie could not say
- 3:36Speaker 4: for certain, though police would later learn that the shooter
- 3:39Speaker 4: had fled the house before the call to nine one
- 3:41Speaker 4: one was placed.
- 3:42Speaker 1: The attack was over. Uncertain of this fact, Stephanie nonetheless
- 3:48Speaker 1: left the safety of the bathroom and ran back to
- 3:50Speaker 1: Kaylie's room. There, she found her daughter on the floor.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Martine Cardio, Here, there's a lot of people coming a
- 4:14Speaker 5: lot and running her okay how.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Ye.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Deputies from the Kenosha Sheriff's Department arrived alongside e MTS
- 4:28Speaker 1: at the house swiftly. They found Stephanie Juga in the
- 4:31Speaker 1: bedroom with Kaylee. She had sustained a gunshot wound to
- 4:35Speaker 1: her left arm, just above the wrist. A second shot
- 4:38Speaker 1: had hit her right side. She had nonetheless been vigorously
- 4:42Speaker 1: performing CPR on her daughter. Kaylee was rushed from the
- 4:46Speaker 1: house to the front yard for further emergency treatment, while
- 4:49Speaker 1: Stephanie was taken to the hospital only a few blocks away.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Even with the rapid response and proximity of the hospital,
- 4:57Speaker 1: Kaylee's injuries proved too severe. She was pronounced dead at
- 5:02Speaker 1: the scene. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner found four gunshot
- 5:09Speaker 1: wounds to her chest and a fifth to the head.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Medical staff later speculated that even if a team of
- 5:16Speaker 1: surgeons had been physically present in Kayley's bedroom the moment
- 5:19Speaker 1: her attacker fired, they would not have been able to
- 5:23Speaker 1: save her. Stephanie Juga survived the attack after undergoing multiple
- 5:31Speaker 1: surgeries to her arm, chest, and abdomen. As soon as
- 5:34Speaker 1: she was able, she spoke to detectives about what had
- 5:37Speaker 1: transpired in the moments before she was shot. She described
- 5:41Speaker 1: hearing a blood curdling scream followed by a bang from
- 5:44Speaker 1: her daughter's bedroom. She rushed to check on her, and
- 5:48Speaker 1: standing at the threshold was her daughter's ex boyfriend, fifteen
- 5:52Speaker 1: year old Martise Fuller. She pleaded with him, stating, you
- 5:57Speaker 1: don't have to do this. He replied, I have to.
- 6:01Speaker 1: He raised his arm to his chest and fired. Stephanie
- 6:05Speaker 1: escaped behind her bedroom door, though she was pursued by
- 6:08Speaker 1: the shooter, who kicked it open. Then he fired once more.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Retreating further into the master suite, she managed to lock
- 6:16Speaker 1: herself into the bathroom. From there, she placed two phone calls,
- 6:21Speaker 1: the first to her husband, the second two nine one
- 6:25Speaker 1: one In the house. Investigators at first discovered six shell casings.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Later they realized that there had to have been seven shots,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and the final casing was located underneath of a console
- 6:41Speaker 1: table at the bottom of the stairs. There were droplets
- 6:45Speaker 1: of blood along the stairway, as well as one projectile
- 6:49Speaker 1: at the landing at the top of the stairs. Outside
- 6:51Speaker 1: of the bedrooms, debris from destroyed furniture became part of
- 6:55Speaker 1: the crime scene. After law enforcement blew open a locked
- 6:58Speaker 1: bedroom door to ensure sure that the shooter was not
- 7:01Speaker 1: hiding inside, he was not, Martise Fuller. If he was,
- 7:06Speaker 1: the shooter had fled the scene before they arrived. In
- 7:10Speaker 1: Kaylee's room, a cluster of casings in front of the mirror,
- 7:13Speaker 1: having fallen into the carpet, suggested that this is where
- 7:17Speaker 1: the shooter had fired. The downward trajectory of the shots
- 7:21Speaker 1: led investigators to pull up a portion of the carpet
- 7:24Speaker 1: where Kaylei was found, revealing a projectile lodged in the floorboard.
- 7:29Speaker 1: They believed that the final shot had been delivered at
- 7:32Speaker 1: close range, with the shooter standing directly above her. On
- 7:37Speaker 1: the sidewalk between the Juga House and Horizon Park, investigators
- 7:41Speaker 1: spotted a single bullet the exact kind used in the shooting.
- 7:45Speaker 1: They speculated that it had been dropped accidentally likely on
- 7:49Speaker 1: the way to commit the murder. Fifteen year old Kaylee
- 7:56Speaker 1: Juga was a varsity cheerleader. She played on the softball
- 7:59Speaker 1: team and was an honorable student at Bradford High School.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Kaylee excelled in anything she put her mind to. She
- 8:07Speaker 1: had a zest for life and was passionate about music
- 8:10Speaker 1: and dance. In their grief, friends and family members unfailingly
- 8:15Speaker 1: mentioned Kaylee's contagious laughter. She was known to start a
- 8:19Speaker 1: joke to send into uncontrollable giggles and have everyone in
- 8:22Speaker 1: tears without ever reaching the punchline. It was impossible not
- 8:27Speaker 1: to share in Kaylee's joy and laughter.
- 8:30Speaker 7: She wanted to make a room light up with her
- 8:32Speaker 7: smile anytime, or her laugh. Her laugh is you can
- 8:35Speaker 7: always remember her laugh. I can hear it all the time,
- 8:38Speaker 7: you know. It's just it's very memorable. She was such
- 8:41Speaker 7: a loving person. Kaylee loved cheer, she loved being with
- 8:46Speaker 7: her friends. She was just a bubbly person. She made
- 8:49Speaker 7: everything a great time.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Kaylee's fellow cheerleaders honored their friend with a special routine
- 8:55Speaker 1: followed by a moment of silence. The memorial was initially
- 8:59Speaker 1: blocked by the local school board, who claimed that for
- 9:03Speaker 1: legal reasons they could not proceed. It seemed that two
- 9:07Speaker 1: students under their authority were involved, Kayleie and Martise, and
- 9:11Speaker 1: they could not be seen favoring one side. My wife
- 9:15Speaker 1: was shocked trying to get CPERR to my daughter who
- 9:19Speaker 1: was murdered, and they can't do a moment of silence
- 9:22Speaker 1: or a five minute cheer, ridiculous. In the face of
- 9:26Speaker 1: overwhelming disgust of the decision, they altered course and the
- 9:30Speaker 1: memorial went forward.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Glad this was.
- 9:34Speaker 8: Able to happen, And I'm glad to see that everyone
- 9:37Speaker 8: came out for Kaylee and that I love her and
- 9:40Speaker 8: that I'll always miss her.
- 9:48Speaker 1: In the immediate aftermath of the murder, the shooter, believed
- 9:51Speaker 1: to be Martise Fuller, had fled. Despite what must have
- 9:55Speaker 1: been a rapid and chaotic encounter, Stephanie Juga was well
- 9:58Speaker 1: placed to identify him. Martis had entered the lives of
- 10:02Speaker 1: the Juga family a year before, when Kaylee first brought
- 10:06Speaker 1: her new boyfriend home. He was generally well received, Stephanie recalled,
- 10:10Speaker 1: believing he was a good kid, an athlete with plans
- 10:13Speaker 1: for college and a stable future. Martis played basketball and
- 10:19Speaker 1: was the quarterback for the football team, while Kaylee joined
- 10:22Speaker 1: the cheer squad. They made for a pitcher perfect young couple.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Over the next ten months, Martisse would have dinner at
- 10:29Speaker 1: the Juga household two to three times a week. He
- 10:32Speaker 1: stayed into the evenings to watch movies with the family.
- 10:35Speaker 1: He attended Kaylee's little brother, Mason's football games, and even
- 10:39Speaker 1: spent major holidays, including Christmas Day, at the Juga home.
- 10:44Speaker 1: But as time went on, the relationship between the young
- 10:47Speaker 1: teens developed an unhealthy dynamic. It seemed that Martis wanted
- 10:52Speaker 1: to be in contact with Kayleie constantly. She would keep
- 10:55Speaker 1: him on a video call while at home, even when
- 10:58Speaker 1: doing homework, watching TV, or messaging other friends. If she
- 11:03Speaker 1: was out, he would call and text incessantly, refusing to stop.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Even when Stephanie sat him down and explained that his
- 11:10Speaker 1: behavior was disruptive to the family. He rejected her assertion,
- 11:15Speaker 1: laughed it off, and kept calling. Meanwhile, the teenage rumor
- 11:21Speaker 1: mill was churning on social media. Accusations that Martise was
- 11:25Speaker 1: spending time with another girl found their way to Kayleie,
- 11:29Speaker 1: and it seems he responded by launching similar accusations at her.
- 11:35Speaker 1: The summer before the murder, a friend posted to Martise,
- 11:38Speaker 1: weren't you just hanging out with another girl yesterday? Kayleie
- 11:42Speaker 1: deserves better? On x which was still Twitter at the time,
- 11:46Speaker 1: Kaylee wrote, I didn't do anything. Can never believe me.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I swear to God. Sick and tired of this, the
- 11:54Speaker 1: assumed third party wrote me or Kayleie and LMAO, wait wait,
- 12:00Speaker 1: but you cheated on both of us and funny because
- 12:04Speaker 1: he was with me yesterday. At school, Martes's controlling behavior escalated.
- 12:15Speaker 1: An incident in the hallway in Bradford High School took
- 12:18Speaker 1: a scary turn when Martis blocked Kayleie and demanded that
- 12:22Speaker 1: she hand over her cell phone. School security had to
- 12:25Speaker 1: be called to de escalate the situation and physically restrain Martise.
- 12:30Speaker 1: The experience left Kayleie in tears. At that time, the
- 12:34Speaker 1: school instructed Martise to keep his distance. Their class schedules
- 12:38Speaker 1: were altered and an agreement was put in place. One
- 12:42Speaker 1: more outburst and he would be expelled, no more sports teams,
- 12:46Speaker 1: no chance of a scholarship. He was to have no
- 12:50Speaker 1: contact with Kaylie Juga. In February, he violated the agreement.
- 12:57Speaker 1: He cornered Kayllie once more. This time the incident was
- 13:01Speaker 1: witnessed by teachers. It was on camera. Martise nonetheless denied it.
- 13:07Speaker 1: He was expelled and reportedly furious. By the spring, Kaylie
- 13:16Speaker 1: had broken things off. She had first minimized the incidents
- 13:20Speaker 1: at the school, not wishing to get her boyfriend into
- 13:22Speaker 1: further trouble, But after the expulsion, Kayleie had had enough,
- 13:28Speaker 1: posting about someone assumed to be Martise taking advantage of her.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Start having respect for yourself and don't let that happen,
- 13:36Speaker 1: she wrote. Her ex boyfriend responded by stalking her every move.
- 13:42Speaker 1: On Twitter, she posted, keep lurking, Baby. He was spotted
- 13:47Speaker 1: walking back and forth outside of the Juga house in
- 13:50Speaker 1: the afternoons. Other times he lurked outside at night, secretly
- 13:55Speaker 1: looking towards Kaylee's bedroom window while the family slept, and
- 14:00Speaker 1: his phone calls continued. So Kaylee blocked his number. Martis
- 14:04Speaker 1: began calling her from friend's phones. Sometimes he would have
- 14:08Speaker 1: them speak with her briefly before handing the phone to him.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Kaylee began blocking those numbers as well. When out with girlfriends,
- 14:16Speaker 1: they agreed not to post selfies online, giving away their locations,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and they never shared their plans on social media for
- 14:24Speaker 1: fear that Martise would see it and turn up uninvited.
- 14:31Speaker 1: At the age of fifteen, Kaylee was forced to resign
- 14:34Speaker 1: from her first job at a local laundromat because she
- 14:36Speaker 1: felt unsafe being alone at work. The owner of the
- 14:40Speaker 1: business had made concessions for his young employee. Martis's phone
- 14:44Speaker 1: number was blocked from the business phone line, and Kaylee
- 14:46Speaker 1: was allowed to keep the doors locked when working alone,
- 14:49Speaker 1: unlocking the entrance only as customers approached and knocked to
- 14:53Speaker 1: be let in. Despite these measures, she was constantly on edge.
- 14:58Speaker 1: In April, she wrote to her first employer to Brian,
- 15:02Speaker 1: thank you for the opportunity to work for this company.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I appreciate you hiring me for my first job. Unfortunately,
- 15:09Speaker 1: due to the situation that has been going on in
- 15:11Speaker 1: my personal life, for my safety, I will need to
- 15:14Speaker 1: look for a job with multiple people around and where
- 15:16Speaker 1: he will not know where I work. Cayley went out
- 15:22Speaker 1: and found a new job and hoped that her ex
- 15:24Speaker 1: boyfriend would never find out where. Immediately after the shooting,
- 15:32Speaker 1: Kenosha police launched a manhunt for the fifteen year old suspect.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They found that he had not been living at his
- 15:38Speaker 1: mother's house for weeks, instead bouncing from one friend's home
- 15:41Speaker 1: to another, crashing on couches where he could. When law
- 15:45Speaker 1: enforcement track down his mother, Elise Fuller, she told them
- 15:49Speaker 1: that her son could not be the shooter because he
- 15:51Speaker 1: had been at her home from noon to three pm
- 15:54Speaker 1: that afternoon, the time period directly overlapping with the murder.
- 15:59Speaker 1: A friend of his Alexis, however, offered another version of events.
- 16:04Speaker 1: She told police that Martise had been at her house
- 16:06Speaker 1: the night before. She had given him a ride to
- 16:09Speaker 1: another friend's home at one pm that day, just ten
- 16:12Speaker 1: blocks away from the Juga household. Martis then asked to
- 16:16Speaker 1: be picked up at roughly the same location at three
- 16:18Speaker 1: point thirty. When Alexis did so, he was wearing the
- 16:21Speaker 1: same clothes, but now his white trainers were extremely dirty
- 16:27Speaker 1: and he seemed visibly upset. The next morning, Kenosha police
- 16:34Speaker 1: received a call from Martis's cousin and Shenise Andrews, who
- 16:38Speaker 1: lived in Racine. She told them that, to her surprise,
- 16:41Speaker 1: her young cousin turned up at her home at around
- 16:43Speaker 1: nine pm the night before. She allowed him to stay
- 16:46Speaker 1: for a few hours to see family, but when he
- 16:49Speaker 1: did not leave. She turned him in.
- 16:52Speaker 9: You know what you gotta do.
- 16:53Speaker 8: You can't keep waiting, you can't keep standing around here.
- 16:55Speaker 8: I know you want to see your family and everything,
- 16:57Speaker 8: but the time is almost up. Anything happen to you
- 17:00Speaker 8: at this point, he really didn't want to speak on
- 17:02Speaker 8: a situation. I was just trying to calm him down
- 17:06Speaker 8: and just trying to figure out what was going on
- 17:08Speaker 8: in your mind that you did something like that. Because
- 17:11Speaker 8: I know my cousin, he's fifteen years old. He is
- 17:13Speaker 8: not that type of person. I wouldn't wish this on nobody,
- 17:16Speaker 8: and I feel like I feel like how I am
- 17:19Speaker 8: with both sides of the family. I wouldn't want my
- 17:22Speaker 8: sixteen year old daughter getting shot and killed in her
- 17:25Speaker 8: own home and my fifteen year old cousin might get
- 17:29Speaker 8: sentsus for life. So right now is just my head
- 17:32Speaker 8: is everywhere.
- 17:34Speaker 1: At first, Anchonese told police only that she knew that
- 17:37Speaker 1: they were looking for her cousin, so she turned him in,
- 17:40Speaker 1: but that she did not believe that he was capable
- 17:43Speaker 1: of what was alleged. As detectives walked her from the station,
- 17:46Speaker 1: they appealed to her as a mother, how would she
- 17:49Speaker 1: feel if it had been one of her children if
- 17:52Speaker 1: it had been her six year old son or four
- 17:54Speaker 1: year old daughter that had been killed in their home.
- 17:58Speaker 1: This brought ansonese paw. She told them that she had
- 18:02Speaker 1: more information to offer, so they went back into the
- 18:05Speaker 1: station and sat down again. That is when she told
- 18:09Speaker 1: them that her cousin had offered her a full confession
- 18:13Speaker 1: the night before. Surveillance footage from the neighborhood on the
- 18:17Speaker 1: afternoon of the murder captured a sequence of events that
- 18:20Speaker 1: aligned perfectly with the information that Anteonie had already provided
- 18:24Speaker 1: to police. At just before two pm, Martise was dropped
- 18:29Speaker 1: off by Alexis at his friend's home in the subdivision
- 18:31Speaker 1: near to the Juga household. An internal camera captured him
- 18:35Speaker 1: by the front door, dressed in darkwa washed jeans, a
- 18:38Speaker 1: gray hoodie, white sneakers, and carrying a black backpack. He
- 18:43Speaker 1: was spotted leaving the house on a bike shortly after.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Between his friend's home and the Juca residence, there was
- 18:49Speaker 1: a house with a doorbell camera. That camera captured a
- 18:53Speaker 1: figure on a bike wearing a gray hoodie, dark pants,
- 18:56Speaker 1: white shoes, and carrying a backpack, traveling west in the
- 19:00Speaker 1: direction of Kayley's house. Across from their home is Horizon Park,
- 19:05Speaker 1: a largely open green space with a playground, walking trails,
- 19:09Speaker 1: and sports fields. It is lined with trees along the roadside.
- 19:13Speaker 1: If standing concealed within the tree line, the front of
- 19:17Speaker 1: the jugahome would be visible. Antonese explained that Martise had
- 19:22Speaker 1: left his bike amongst the trees, changed his clothing and
- 19:25Speaker 1: kept an eye on the house. His intention, he said,
- 19:29Speaker 1: was only to enter and shoot Kaylee once, maybe twice.
- 19:33Speaker 1: He told his cousin that he watched as Stephanie and
- 19:36Speaker 1: Cayley returned home and entered through the garage. He knew
- 19:39Speaker 1: their schedule. He knew that Nick would be at work,
- 19:43Speaker 1: that Mason would still be in school. From another camera
- 19:46Speaker 1: across the street, a figure, now dressed all in black
- 19:49Speaker 1: and without a backpack, though still wearing white shoes, approached
- 19:53Speaker 1: the house. They stayed close to the walls of the
- 19:56Speaker 1: neighbouring homes and moved directly underneath a camera positioned in
- 20:00Speaker 1: the corner of the Juca's garage before entering through the
- 20:04Speaker 1: open door. Had their camera system been working on that day,
- 20:07Speaker 1: which it was not, the attacker's chosen movements would have
- 20:11Speaker 1: avoided being captured at least by the Djuca family cameras.
- 20:19Speaker 1: After entering the house, there was a period of just
- 20:22Speaker 1: over one minute, approaching ninety seconds before shots were heard
- 20:26Speaker 1: ringing out. At first, there was just one sixteen seconds
- 20:31Speaker 1: passed before another was heard. Then the shots continued in
- 20:35Speaker 1: quick succession, seven in total. The attacker was inside the
- 20:40Speaker 1: house for a total of three minutes and forty seconds.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Then they were captured running from the garage and sprinting
- 20:47Speaker 1: back down the street in the direction they came towards
- 20:50Speaker 1: Horizon Park. The same nest doorbell camera that had captured
- 20:56Speaker 1: the hooded figure riding leisurely towards the park in our
- 20:59Speaker 1: Earth earlier, taking roughly eight seconds to pass by, now
- 21:03Speaker 1: also showed them returning. The rider was moving much faster
- 21:07Speaker 1: and passed the home in only two seconds, this time
- 21:10Speaker 1: traveling in the opposite direction. The returning figure again wore
- 21:15Speaker 1: the gray hoodie, suggesting to investigators that he had changed
- 21:18Speaker 1: back into his original clothing before leaving the area, just
- 21:22Speaker 1: as Antonie had said. The trip back was recorded at
- 21:26Speaker 1: three oh four pm, two minutes after Stephanie managed to
- 21:30Speaker 1: place the call to nine to one one. Martie Fuller
- 21:39Speaker 1: was charged with first degree intentional homicide and attempted first
- 21:42Speaker 1: degree homicide. He was scheduled to go to trial in
- 21:45Speaker 1: February twenty twenty. Before he did so, he managed to
- 21:50Speaker 1: get into further trouble. Prosecutors alleged that Martis, with the
- 21:54Speaker 1: help of certain family members, was attempting to tamper with
- 21:57Speaker 1: the jury.
- 21:58Speaker 10: We were monitoring some jail phone calls from the defendant.
- 22:02Speaker 10: The allegation is that the defendant got the names off
- 22:06Speaker 10: of a chart of the potential jurors. That the defendant
- 22:10Speaker 10: then memorized those names and made some assumptions about who
- 22:14Speaker 10: was related to those individuals, and then began to try
- 22:16Speaker 10: to contact people to get in touch with them. The
- 22:18Speaker 10: supreme seriousness of something like that is that it really
- 22:21Speaker 10: deals with the whole integrity of a jury trial.
- 22:25Speaker 1: At the same time, at a pre trial hearing, Martis's mother,
- 22:28Speaker 1: Elise Fuller, was arrested after an outburst in the courtroom
- 22:32Speaker 1: following an exchange of words. She was expected to be
- 22:35Speaker 1: charged with obstructing an officer. Exactly what words she used
- 22:39Speaker 1: in the courtroom were not reported. The murder trial eventually
- 22:46Speaker 1: commenced in May.
- 22:49Speaker 11: On May ninth of twenty nineteen, the unimaginable happened to
- 22:54Speaker 11: the Djuga family, A person that they shared Christmas Day
- 23:01Speaker 11: with that they opened their home and their hearts too
- 23:06Speaker 11: and let them share, let him share time with their
- 23:13Speaker 11: precious daughter, took her life.
- 23:18Speaker 12: And he looked at Stephanie Juga in the face after
- 23:22Speaker 12: all their time together and tried to take her life too,
- 23:28Speaker 12: And when she tried to reason with him, he told her.
- 23:31Speaker 11: Yes, I do and shot her twice.
- 23:36Speaker 13: Between March and May of twenty nineteen, Martis Fuller's life
- 23:42Speaker 13: was in chaos. He had been expelled from Bradford High School,
- 23:48Speaker 13: unable to play football and ultimately due to a fight
- 23:54Speaker 13: with his family, he found himself homeless. He was transient.
- 24:00Speaker 13: He didn't have a cell phone that had a cellular connection.
- 24:04Speaker 13: He was forced to rely on using Wi Fi when
- 24:07Speaker 13: he could have internet at various locations. He found himself baging,
- 24:13Speaker 13: relying on friends for rides. Because he was fifteen, he
- 24:18Speaker 13: couldn't drive. He didn't have a car. During this time period,
- 24:23Speaker 13: Martise was frequently frantic. He was overwhelmed. He was a
- 24:28Speaker 13: fifteen year old child trying to survive.
- 24:33Speaker 1: The prosecution told their case through a story of two timelines.
- 24:37Speaker 1: The first was Kaylee's reality, her attempts to get out
- 24:40Speaker 1: of a toxic relationship and keep herself safe. The second
- 24:45Speaker 1: was Martise's timeline, in which he grew progressively more angry
- 24:48Speaker 1: over his loss of control, first over Kaylee and then
- 24:52Speaker 1: over his own circumstances. This progression led to a series
- 24:56Speaker 1: of decisions in the week before the murder. First, he
- 24:59Speaker 1: spoke with multiple friends about acquiring a gun and ammunition. Ultimately,
- 25:04Speaker 1: he obtained both. He was photographed posing with his newly
- 25:08Speaker 1: acquired handgun seven days before he decided to use it.
- 25:12Speaker 1: He showed the gun to friends he bragged about it.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Three days before, he told a friend that Kaylie had
- 25:19Speaker 1: ruined his life and that he wanted to kill her.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Two days before, he searched her Facebook page trying to
- 25:26Speaker 1: locate her. He also took a bike from one friend
- 25:29Speaker 1: and then stashed it at another's home. At the location
- 25:33Speaker 1: only blocks from the Juga house, he began staking out
- 25:36Speaker 1: the street during the day and night, staring at her
- 25:41Speaker 1: bedroom window. On May ninth, the day of the murder,
- 25:46Speaker 1: Martise reached out to his friend Desiree, asking her to
- 25:50Speaker 1: do that hit with him. She knew what he meant.
- 25:54Speaker 1: He had mentioned it twice earlier in the week he
- 25:57Speaker 1: wanted Kayleie dead.
- 26:01Speaker 12: Did he make any suggestions about what he wanted to
- 26:06Speaker 12: do to his ex girlfriend?
- 26:10Speaker 11: Yes? What did he say.
- 26:14Speaker 13: That he wanted to kill her?
- 26:17Speaker 11: What did you say to that?
- 26:20Speaker 2: I listened?
- 26:21Speaker 11: And do you remember what his message to you was?
- 26:28Speaker 13: To do the hit with him?
- 26:34Speaker 11: What did you understand that?
- 26:35Speaker 9: To me?
- 26:38Speaker 13: The obvious.
- 26:40Speaker 11: The killer to kill the ex girlfriend like he had
- 26:44Speaker 11: talked about the day before.
- 26:46Speaker 13: Yes, he says, I'm so mad you need to do
- 26:49Speaker 13: that to her.
- 26:50Speaker 11: Say that again, I'm so mad you need to do
- 26:52Speaker 11: that to her? And what is the day and time
- 26:57Speaker 11: that that message was sent to you? Thursday at eleven
- 27:02Speaker 11: fifty two am.
- 27:04Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Desiree refused to take part, though she told no one
- 27:09Speaker 1: about the conversation she held with Martis until after Hayley
- 27:13Speaker 1: was dead. By the time she testified at trial, she
- 27:17Speaker 1: was already serving time at a juvenile facility for multiple
- 27:20Speaker 1: unrelated convictions. Investigators were able to locate the murder weapon
- 27:26Speaker 1: with the help of another one of Martes's cousins, a
- 27:29Speaker 1: man named Dontrelle Seymour. Dontrelle led police to a drain
- 27:33Speaker 1: sewer in Racine, where the fifteen year old had wrapped
- 27:36Speaker 1: the gun in a diaper taken from a family member's
- 27:38Speaker 1: house and dropped it in. Had they not been led
- 27:41Speaker 1: to it, detectives believed they would have never found it.
- 27:45Speaker 1: The same was true for his change in clothing, the
- 27:48Speaker 1: black hoodie and white shoes that Martise was thought to
- 27:51Speaker 1: have worn into the Juga house. Police were never able
- 27:54Speaker 1: to locate them, though after discovering how he had disposed
- 27:58Speaker 1: of the gun, they assumed these items were also likely
- 28:01Speaker 1: to have been dumped into a sewer somewhere between Kenosha
- 28:04Speaker 1: and Racine. There were too many to search. They did
- 28:09Speaker 1: recover Martis's other clothing and the black backpack that he
- 28:13Speaker 1: was seen carrying in the surveillance footage. These items were
- 28:16Speaker 1: still with him when Antonye turned him into the police
- 28:19Speaker 1: the following day. In outlining Martesse's mindset and his motive,
- 28:26Speaker 1: the assistant principal at Bradford High School testified to the
- 28:29Speaker 1: behavior that had led to his expulsion. Jill Schwenzen was
- 28:33Speaker 1: the school's disciplinarian. She routinely dealt with misbehaving teens, but
- 28:39Speaker 1: Martise Fuller, she said, was different. Even after years of
- 28:43Speaker 1: dealing with difficult and even violent offenders as a social worker.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Martise Fuller had scared her. She spoke of his anger
- 28:51Speaker 1: over being separated from Kayley at school. Then, after he
- 28:55Speaker 1: violated the agreement to keep his distance and learned he
- 28:58Speaker 1: would be expelled, called every office in the school repeatedly
- 29:02Speaker 1: trying to reach the assistant principle to have the expulsion overturned.
- 29:07Speaker 1: He would not accept her decision. She eventually hung up
- 29:10Speaker 1: on him.
- 29:12Speaker 6: He was very angry with me. He called me a liar.
- 29:16Speaker 6: He told me that I didn't know what I was
- 29:19Speaker 6: talking about or what I had seen. He put his
- 29:24Speaker 6: finger in my face. We had to take a break
- 29:28Speaker 6: for him to take a walk. Ultimately we had to
- 29:31Speaker 6: call dad to convince him to sign it. Did his
- 29:34Speaker 6: father com or did he just talk to him over
- 29:36Speaker 6: the phone. He spoke to him over the phone. I
- 29:39Speaker 6: had told both students that I was going to split
- 29:42Speaker 6: them up. They had several classes together and Martista not
- 29:46Speaker 6: want that to happen. And there was a day during
- 29:50Speaker 6: his suspension that he was calling every office in the
- 29:53Speaker 6: school building trying to get to me so he could
- 29:58Speaker 6: convince me not to change their schedu Jos students are
- 30:01Speaker 6: usually not very happy with me when they meet with
- 30:03Speaker 6: me because my job to do discipline. However, this was
- 30:08Speaker 6: an extreme case for me. I was scared.
- 30:13Speaker 11: You were scared of Martis.
- 30:14Speaker 9: Yes.
- 30:15Speaker 6: I explained to him that this is what was going
- 30:18Speaker 6: to happen. He kept trying to tell me that that's
- 30:21Speaker 6: not what Kaylie wanted, that that's not what he wanted,
- 30:24Speaker 6: that it wasn't as bad as what I thought. I
- 30:28Speaker 6: ultimately had to hang up the phone on him because
- 30:30Speaker 6: he would not stop talking.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Martes's defense team tried where they could to poke holes
- 30:39Speaker 1: into what seemed like an airtight case of his guilt.
- 30:42Speaker 1: One suggestion was that Stephanie Juga, in the chaos and
- 30:46Speaker 1: trauma of the attack, had misidentified her daughter's ex boyfriend
- 30:50Speaker 1: as the killer. Because of the ongoing conflict between him
- 30:53Speaker 1: and the family. It would have been natural to assume
- 30:56Speaker 1: it was Martis that she had encountered outside her daughter's room,
- 30:59Speaker 1: even that had been a complete stranger, they argued. After
- 31:03Speaker 1: this identification was made, investigators had not explored any other suspects.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Stephanie Duca's testimony, however, was compelling and did not leave
- 31:13Speaker 1: much room for doubt, and I went.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Running out of my bathroom through my bedroom and stopped
- 31:22Speaker 2: in the doorway of my bedroom. Facing me was Martis
- 31:31Speaker 2: with a gun.
- 31:33Speaker 11: Did you say anything to him when you saw him.
- 31:36Speaker 14: I did.
- 31:36Speaker 2: I stopped in my doorway and I looked at him
- 31:39Speaker 2: and I said, oh my god, Martis.
- 31:41Speaker 13: I said, please, you don't have to do this, and
- 31:44Speaker 13: he looked at me and he said, yes, I do.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Stephanie explained how she tried to render aid to Kelly,
- 31:56Speaker 1: but it had been too late.
- 31:59Speaker 11: So then I tried to start doing CPR as fast
- 32:02Speaker 11: as I could, and that.
- 32:06Speaker 14: Were you able to do that? Having been shot in
- 32:10Speaker 14: your own wrist at that moment, it was very painful,
- 32:14Speaker 14: but I didn't care. Trying to save her was more important.
- 32:18Speaker 11: Did your daughter die as a result of those shots?
- 32:21Speaker 11: She did, yes, right there on the lawn, or so earlier.
- 32:28Speaker 13: I think she died in her room.
- 32:35Speaker 1: And Chanice told jurors about the confession her cousin made
- 32:38Speaker 1: to her on the night of the murder. It was strange.
- 32:41Speaker 1: She said that he had arrived at her home that
- 32:43Speaker 1: night at all. He was family, but they had never
- 32:47Speaker 1: been very close. When he began telling her what had happened,
- 32:51Speaker 1: she just listened. Then she called the police early the
- 32:54Speaker 1: next morning.
- 33:00Speaker 9: The detectives was telling me to put my daughter and
- 33:04Speaker 9: their shoes and to see how it would feels about
- 33:08Speaker 9: you know, something happened, happening like that to my daughter.
- 33:15Speaker 15: Do you remember what additional things you told the officer
- 33:18Speaker 15: at that time? So what did you say that the defendant,
- 33:22Speaker 15: Martisse Fuller, had told you about what happened at the
- 33:26Speaker 15: Juga house that day.
- 33:29Speaker 8: Well, he told me that he was watching her house
- 33:31Speaker 8: for quite a while and that he knew what you know,
- 33:37Speaker 8: when her when she would be alone at her house.
- 33:40Speaker 8: And then he said that when he walked in, they
- 33:44Speaker 8: were listening to music and her uh Kylie was in
- 33:48Speaker 8: her room and what the door cracked or something like that.
- 33:54Speaker 8: And he said that he shot at her once and
- 33:57Speaker 8: he freaked out and he snapped and shut at the
- 34:01Speaker 8: mom twice.
- 34:06Speaker 1: The defense did not call any witnesses. Martisse did not
- 34:11Speaker 1: take the stand to testify. The state closed by outlining
- 34:16Speaker 1: the number of absurd coincidences that would need to have
- 34:19Speaker 1: taken place for his claim of innocence to be viable.
- 34:23Speaker 1: That Martise was unlucky enough to be misidentified at the
- 34:26Speaker 1: scene that his own cousin would know so many of
- 34:30Speaker 1: the details of the crime before investigators had uncovered any
- 34:33Speaker 1: footage or even completed an analysis of the crime scene,
- 34:37Speaker 1: and that the confession she outlined to them would later
- 34:40Speaker 1: be supported by so many facts.
- 34:44Speaker 15: What a horrible coincidence if you're an innocent person, and
- 34:48Speaker 15: then here's a horrible coincidence. It's a cousin of yours
- 34:55Speaker 15: who takes the police, who otherwise are never going to
- 34:59Speaker 15: find this gun to a sewer and scene where they
- 35:04Speaker 15: find the very gun. It is the murder weapon. Okay,
- 35:08Speaker 15: so you didn't kill her, but your cousin is able
- 35:13Speaker 15: to lead police to the murder weapon, which looks identical
- 35:18Speaker 15: to a picture we have of you with the same gun,
- 35:23Speaker 15: and to what your friend says is the gun you
- 35:26Speaker 15: showed him just days before the murder.
- 35:33Speaker 1: The last effort of the defense was to suggest that
- 35:36Speaker 1: whoever the shooter was, they did not have the requisite
- 35:39Speaker 1: time to leave the Juga home at three pm, run
- 35:42Speaker 1: to the park, change clothes, then be the same person
- 35:46Speaker 1: captured riding the bike in the opposite direction just four
- 35:49Speaker 1: minutes later. The timeline was impossible, they said. In rebuttal,
- 35:54Speaker 1: The state suggested the timeline was in fact flawless. It
- 35:59Speaker 1: was point three to two miles from the park to
- 36:01Speaker 1: the Juga house, which could be sprinted by a high
- 36:04Speaker 1: school athlete in less than a minute. Riding a bike
- 36:08Speaker 1: from the park to the house with a doorbell camera,
- 36:10Speaker 1: a distance of point one seven miles at the speed
- 36:13Speaker 1: the rider was going would take only thirty to forty seconds.
- 36:18Speaker 1: That left a comfortable two to three minutes to change clothing,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and the clothes they believed he was wearing would have
- 36:25Speaker 1: come off quickly, a black warmupsuit that was designed to
- 36:28Speaker 1: be pulled over other clothing. The jury returned with their
- 36:36Speaker 1: verdict in a few short hours.
- 36:39Speaker 16: The verdicts read as follows. We the jury find the
- 36:43Speaker 16: defendant guilty of first degree intentional homicide is charged in
- 36:47Speaker 16: count one of the information. We the jury find the
- 36:49Speaker 16: defendant guilty of attempted first degree intentional homicide is charged
- 36:53Speaker 16: in count two of the information, dated today and signed
- 36:57Speaker 16: by the four person.
- 36:59Speaker 1: The verdict was read, Martise looked to his family in
- 37:02Speaker 1: the gallery. The realization that at the age of sixteen,
- 37:06Speaker 1: he was likely to spend the rest of his life
- 37:08Speaker 1: in prison must have set in slowly. It took a
- 37:12Speaker 1: minute or two, but he tore off his face mask
- 37:15Speaker 1: and began to sob at his sentence. In hearing, Martise
- 37:41Speaker 1: had his attorney read a prepared statement. He wrote that
- 37:44Speaker 1: he was sorry for what had happened to Caylee, but
- 37:47Speaker 1: he was innocent of murder.
- 37:51Speaker 13: Truthfully, I am sorry about the pain you've all suffered
- 37:55Speaker 13: through that this, but through this, but more importantly the
- 38:01Speaker 13: loss of my ex girlfriend, Kayley, that I loved too,
- 38:05Speaker 13: So I am sorry. Despite the hatred that is against me,
- 38:10Speaker 13: I still am sorry. But I have to continue to
- 38:14Speaker 13: stand innocent because I am. And I know that I've
- 38:18Speaker 13: barely showed emotion throughout my time, but in all honesty,
- 38:23Speaker 13: it is because it's hard to have tears left to
- 38:27Speaker 13: cry knowing my mom lost a son, one of her
- 38:31Speaker 13: children too.
- 38:33Speaker 16: You said emotionless until the verdict was returned. You seem
- 38:38Speaker 16: to have no ethos, no regret, no sorrow, no empathy.
- 38:45Speaker 16: You are for you and no one else. You are
- 38:49Speaker 16: a very dangerous and a damaged human being.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Martise Fuller was given a sentence of life without the
- 38:57Speaker 1: possibility of parole. Is currently serving a sentence at the
- 39:01Speaker 1: Green Bay Correctional Institute in Wisconsin. Where his family visits often.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Just over five years after her death, on what would
- 39:14Speaker 1: have been her twentieth birthday, Stephanie spoke about the loss
- 39:19Speaker 1: and how much Kaylee is still missed.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Today we celebrate Kaylee even though it's not the same,
- 39:28Speaker 2: and this is our fifth birthday without her.
- 39:33Speaker 13: I mean, how can it be five birthdays without her?
- 39:39Speaker 2: And it just seems like everything.
- 39:40Speaker 13: Happened yesterday.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And that was the tragic case of Kaylee Juga. Thank
- 39:53Speaker 1: you for joining me, and a special thanks this week
- 39:55Speaker 1: to Tan Lewis, Cheryl McGrath and doctor Morse Diaries for
