- 0:01Speaker 1: That all right, anyone else have a first question and
- 0:03Speaker 1: I could go five five. No, So the Big the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Big twelve, and listen, we're we're college sports is in
- 0:13Speaker 1: a unique place.
- 0:16Speaker 2: In terms of where we are with N I L
- 0:18Speaker 2: and revenue sharing.
- 0:21Speaker 1: You know, we we believe that football is critically important Yukon,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and we believe that football could be very, very successful
- 0:30Speaker 1: at Yukon. You know. So I I understand those conversations
- 0:36Speaker 1: that are going on externally, and but I have very
- 0:40Speaker 1: little influence on those things. By the same token that
- 0:44Speaker 1: there's not the better fit than the Big East for
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yukon from the basketball standpoint, it's a perfect fit.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Between both parties, you know.
- 0:55Speaker 1: But I understand when those things are going on, just
- 0:58Speaker 1: the way college sports has changed and it's going to
- 1:01Speaker 1: continue to change.
- 1:03Speaker 2: After winning back to that shit, you have some influence.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'm just a coach man, I think, I think, But
- 1:11Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:11Speaker 1: The reason why we have been able to be as
- 1:13Speaker 1: successful as we've been able to be is.
- 1:16Speaker 2: That I haven't you know, even though you know, I
- 1:19Speaker 2: end up.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Doing a lot more things and showing up in a
- 1:22Speaker 1: lot more places in terms of media or things that nature.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I stay focused on recruiting. I stay focused on becoming
- 1:30Speaker 1: a better coach. I stay focused on running my program.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Things like those decisions that those are in the hands
- 1:37Speaker 1: of the president of our university, the you know, the
- 1:41Speaker 1: athletic director, Dave Bennett. Uh And for me, I just
- 1:44Speaker 1: try to focus on the day to day just trying
- 1:46Speaker 1: to make sure my program is at a championship level.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And I really you know, did I have conversations with
- 1:53Speaker 1: val while that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Was going on, Yes, I did, and uh, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: I expressed.
- 1:59Speaker 1: You know how part it was, uh, you know for me,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and or how much I love being in the Big
- 2:05Speaker 1: East with.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Her, and that.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Obviously it's a unique challenge with revenue sharing and TV
- 2:11Speaker 1: contracts and everything. Right now, you know, we're in a
- 2:16Speaker 1: very unique position because you know, we do believe that
- 2:20Speaker 1: our football program can become an excellent football party. You
- 2:26Speaker 1: pretty a good voice to the fact that the committee
- 2:29Speaker 1: only took three Big East teams last year and.
- 2:32Speaker 3: That you felt that they have really just vote on it.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Are there things that are different this year that.
- 2:37Speaker 3: You think will prevent that from happening again?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Well, I mean I could already see it in the
- 2:42Speaker 2: eight people.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I could already see it in the eight people,
- 2:46Speaker 1: the lack of respect that the Big East gets.
- 2:50Speaker 2: From that standpoint, I don't know what was great, right,
- 2:59Speaker 2: I mean.
- 3:00Speaker 1: You know, we should have five teams the minimum in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the top twenty. We should be obviously, you know how
- 3:08Speaker 1: I feel about the rankings based on what we were
- 3:11Speaker 1: able to do back to back years. Marquette should be
- 3:15Speaker 1: highly ranked. Crate should be highly ranked. The behavior should
- 3:18Speaker 1: be highly ranked. What Sean did with that roster, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: the fact that Sean's one of the best coaches in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the country. You know, So you got those four, you
- 3:26Speaker 1: got what Saint John's has done, what they are I mean,
- 3:28Speaker 1: we should all be ranked in the top twenty.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I don't know how many of those teams are ranked
- 3:32Speaker 2: in the top twenty.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Crate should we go into the season top ten, So
- 3:36Speaker 1: should Marquette.
- 3:37Speaker 2: But the league just you know, you know, we did.
- 3:43Speaker 2: We got buried by the committee last year.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That was clear once the tournament started to you know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: based on those results. So just not you know, I
- 3:54Speaker 1: don't know if we have a strong enough voice in
- 3:56Speaker 1: that room. I don't know who's representing us in that
- 3:59Speaker 1: room this year.
- 4:00Speaker 2: We're in the Big East.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Uh, I'm just focused on winn of my games, win
- 4:03Speaker 1: our games at Yukon, so we could play our way in.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But I guess when there's just a bunch of I
- 4:10Speaker 1: guess athletic directors or administrators or people you know from
- 4:15Speaker 1: the big football conferences in that room, there's not a
- 4:19Speaker 1: lot of people that are supporting what is the best
- 4:24Speaker 1: basketball conference in the country.
- 4:25Speaker 2: We are to begin this. Alex has always been overlooked
- 4:29Speaker 2: a little bit for awards. It's at least nice to
- 4:31Speaker 2: see him get some preseason recognition.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah, Alex, just Alex does a shitty job of drawing
- 4:39Speaker 1: attention to himself besides winning championships and uh accomplishing what
- 4:44Speaker 1: he's accomplished in his career. You know, if he was more,
- 4:49Speaker 1: if he did more tiktoks, and you know, if he
- 4:53Speaker 1: did more things to draw attention to himself, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: he would have solidified his preseason all amount and status
- 5:00Speaker 1: for the AP, you know, which to me is just
- 5:03Speaker 1: you're rewarding the wrong things if you don't reward a
- 5:07Speaker 1: back to back champion, two year starter, one of the
- 5:11Speaker 1: best players in the Big East, the guy that I'm
- 5:13Speaker 1: sure was up there in the voting with Culbrettter for
- 5:16Speaker 1: Big East Player of the Year, when the best When
- 5:18Speaker 1: when the best basketball conference in the country, You know,
- 5:23Speaker 1: like one of the two best players in the league
- 5:25Speaker 1: can't get more recognition and more notoriety. We just value
- 5:30Speaker 1: the wrong things in sports where we're valuing you know,
- 5:33Speaker 1: people that are social media creations. We don't value champions
- 5:37Speaker 1: and people that go about their business in the right way.
- 5:39Speaker 1: But that's probably a societal issue too.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Will you talk about the potential to make history? Have
- 5:46Speaker 2: you approached it and how much will that be?
- 5:48Speaker 1: I've talked about the historical nature of our season pretty
- 5:52Speaker 1: consistently because it's the elephant in the room that is there,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and you know, you can't hide from this opportunity. That's
- 6:02Speaker 1: why I've coached this team so hard. I've coached this
- 6:05Speaker 1: team harder than I've coached any other team that I've had,
- 6:10Speaker 1: because I know the challenge that lies ahead and the
- 6:14Speaker 1: level that people have studied us and how we play,
- 6:17Speaker 1: how we play, and how people are preparing to beat us,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and the target and just how relentlessly you have to
- 6:28Speaker 1: strive to improve to defend what we have right now.
- 6:32Speaker 2: What was the first time you want to mention it?
- 6:33Speaker 1: At pre first summer practice to make said in June,
- 6:42Speaker 1: this is where we're at here.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Everyone has signed on. I probably mentioned it.
- 6:46Speaker 1: In the recruiting process to the transfers and Leam McNeely, and.
- 6:51Speaker 2: The season that we're going to embark on is going
- 6:53Speaker 2: to be.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Rare in terms of what we can accomplish to literally,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you know, join those U c l A teams you
- 7:05Speaker 1: know from the you know history of the game, historical opportunity,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and how you can't give everything that you absolutely have
- 7:15Speaker 1: uh to reach that level of sport. That's why yesterday
- 7:19Speaker 1: was such a messy day in practice. You could see
- 7:22Speaker 1: I'm still upset right about the way things went and
- 7:27Speaker 1: how not up to preparing for that type of season
- 7:30Speaker 1: we were as a group collectively.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Dan, you've talked about how much you've motivated yourself from
- 7:34Speaker 3: putting more pressure on yourself for you to be courted
- 7:37Speaker 3: by an NBA franchise and not just anyone but one
- 7:40Speaker 3: of the marquee franchises in the sport over the summer.
- 7:43Speaker 3: How much does that drate you to do more with
- 7:45Speaker 3: the group you have now?
- 7:46Speaker 1: From the back, I think, uh, I think you you
- 7:53Speaker 1: look at the whole situation and it's uh it's validation
- 7:57Speaker 1: for I think the path I've taken to this point,
- 8:01Speaker 1: just all the benefits of of being a high school
- 8:05Speaker 1: coach for a significant amount of time, coaching at Wagner,
- 8:08Speaker 1: coaching at Rhode Island, taking all these proper steps along
- 8:11Speaker 1: the way that coaches the way coaches used to get
- 8:14Speaker 1: jobs like Yukon. Now they just kind of that's their
- 8:17Speaker 1: first job at this level. I just think I have
- 8:19Speaker 1: a lot of pride just in my journey to this
- 8:23Speaker 1: point and the validation of of that with that opportunity.
- 8:29Speaker 1: But more so, I don't think about it a whole lot.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I'm so obsessed with the next recruit that we're that
- 8:37Speaker 1: we want to get this practice that I've got at
- 8:40Speaker 1: four o'clock today that I'm like absolutely obsessing over how
- 8:44Speaker 1: how well that goes and how locked in I am.
- 8:47Speaker 3: On the opener, you've talked about Alex coming back in
- 8:50Speaker 3: his process for you guys to go through almost the
- 8:53Speaker 3: same kind of decision together and be each other, Sam
- 8:55Speaker 3: the Wards al Gorton, does that for be your relationship
- 8:57Speaker 3: with an advisors.
- 8:58Speaker 2: We have a unique connection. I think we're me and
- 9:00Speaker 2: Alex Caravander wired the same way we.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Think about our family, and then we think about basketball,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and then we go back to thinking about our family,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and then we think about basketball more, and then you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I may pray and then I'll think about basketball again,
- 9:18Speaker 1: or to my wife, and I mean, we just we
- 9:20Speaker 1: don't have a lot of extra space in our lives
- 9:22Speaker 1: for anything that doesn't evolve our pursuits in basketball and
- 9:26Speaker 1: our family. And that's why we're so connected at the hip.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And I don't know that I'll ever have a relationship
- 9:32Speaker 1: just these unique human beings I've had to coach a
- 9:35Speaker 1: chance to coach these last couple of years, the Klingings,
- 9:37Speaker 1: the Cam Spencer's, the Jordan Hawkins Andandre Jackson's. We just
- 9:41Speaker 1: if we keep getting the right type of people, we're
- 9:44Speaker 1: not gonna go anywhere.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Dan, did you watch any the Lakers game last night
- 9:47Speaker 2: or didn't have time for you? Did you have any
- 9:49Speaker 2: thoughts watching that? No, I went to dinner.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I went to dinner with my wife and my oldest son, Dandy,
- 9:55Speaker 1: who works for Scatari over in Jersey's in the coach.
- 10:01Speaker 2: How did your players respond to the whole Lakers process?
- 10:03Speaker 2: And then how's it to inform them that you're staying Yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 2: they were for a couple of days.
- 10:08Speaker 1: They were they were in a tough spot.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Uh so I actually got cut off there. Did you
- 10:15Speaker 2: have a better answer.
- 10:16Speaker 3: No.
- 10:17Speaker 2: We had a nice dinner and then I went. I
- 10:21Speaker 2: went and caught.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I caught the second half because I wanted to.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I saw some of the stuff that JJ was running
- 10:27Speaker 2: into preseason.
- 10:28Speaker 1: He was running some really really good stuff offensively, So
- 10:32Speaker 1: I tried to get back to my hotel room so
- 10:34Speaker 1: I could try to steal some things from him.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what all of us coaches are doing. So
- 10:41Speaker 2: do you think Bronnie would benefit from some G League time?
- 10:49Speaker 1: Sorry?
- 10:49Speaker 2: I forgot what you said because you apologies.
