Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily, body here. You're listening to five Minute
- 0:22Speaker 1: Friday from Hurdle, and I'm so happy you're here. That
- 0:26Speaker 1: really is an understatement. I feel slightly disconnected from the
- 0:30Speaker 1: hurdle community lately, which is odd because I'm at the
- 0:33Speaker 1: forefront of it. But for me, such a large part
- 0:37Speaker 1: of what I do is one way communication, and so
- 0:42Speaker 1: it really helps me when I hear from all of you.
- 0:45Speaker 1: When you're in my dms, when you're leaving reviews and
- 0:48Speaker 1: thoughts on the review page in Apple podcasts, when you're
- 0:52Speaker 1: commenting on the newsletter. All of this is a contributing
- 0:57Speaker 1: factor for me to feel as though I'm doing doing
- 1:00Speaker 1: something right. And I feel like you've been a little
- 1:02Speaker 1: quiet lately. So do me a solid. If you're listening
- 1:06Speaker 1: to this, tag the show on social hit up over
- 1:10Speaker 1: at Hurdle podcast DM me, say Hi, what's up? What's happening?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Email me? Even the email for Hurdle is hello at
- 1:18Speaker 1: Hurdle dot us. I want to hear from you, seriously.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It really does mean a lot to me when y'all engage.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And I know I did just mention the reviews, but
- 1:30Speaker 1: I am positive. There are so many people listening to
- 1:33Speaker 1: this who have not rated this show yet, I promise
- 1:37Speaker 1: you it takes less than one minute of your time.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm going to show a demo on the Socials on
- 1:44Speaker 1: the day. This goes up on how to rate and
- 1:47Speaker 1: review the show and my stories. But if you ever
- 1:50Speaker 1: want to and I are having trouble, let me know.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I got you. I got you. That's the summary of
- 1:56Speaker 1: what's going on, and it's also what I want to
- 1:58Speaker 1: talk about for five minute Friday today, is that I
- 2:01Speaker 1: got me. I was on the subway home the other
- 2:06Speaker 1: day and had this resounding thought about the importance of
- 2:14Speaker 1: continuing to show up and what showing up looks for
- 2:18Speaker 1: me right now. There have been times in my life
- 2:22Speaker 1: where showing up in the most important aspect for myself
- 2:26Speaker 1: was simply getting out of the bed in the morning
- 2:29Speaker 1: and moving my body. And I knew that if I
- 2:32Speaker 1: showed up for myself in that way, I would be
- 2:34Speaker 1: able to handle anything else that came my way throughout
- 2:37Speaker 1: the rest of the day. That's showing up. Showing up
- 2:41Speaker 1: for me right now is a layered version of that,
- 2:45Speaker 1: in that I know firmly with all of the balls
- 2:50Speaker 1: that I am juggling at this moment. Not only do
- 2:53Speaker 1: I need to show up and move my body in
- 2:55Speaker 1: the morning, but then that continues throughout my day in
- 2:59Speaker 1: different phases, through different actions and choices. For me, showing
- 3:04Speaker 1: up right now is choosing kindness when I feel as
- 3:08Speaker 1: though I am about to boil over. Showing up right
- 3:12Speaker 1: now means responding instead of reacting to someone that may
- 3:17Speaker 1: not completely understand what your point of view is or
- 3:21Speaker 1: where you're coming from. For me, showing up is choosing
- 3:25Speaker 1: the things that help me be my best, whether it
- 3:30Speaker 1: is through the way that I move my body or
- 3:32Speaker 1: perhaps sometimes removing myself from a hectic situation. Showing up
- 3:38Speaker 1: for me lately is truly pausing. It's pausing to the
- 3:43Speaker 1: best of my ability, so that when I execute, when
- 3:47Speaker 1: I communicate, when I do X or Y, I am
- 3:50Speaker 1: doing so in a way that would make me feel proud,
- 3:54Speaker 1: regardless of the situation. I don't want to just act
- 3:58Speaker 1: okay considering what's at play. I want to act every
- 4:02Speaker 1: day and present myself every day in a way that
- 4:05Speaker 1: makes me proud period. I say this with compassion as well.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I say this knowing that some days it feels a
- 4:13Speaker 1: lot harder to show up than others. There have been
- 4:16Speaker 1: certainly circumstances in my life where I have felt incapable
- 4:21Speaker 1: of showing up in a way that I once was,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and I have so much grace and compassion for that
- 4:27Speaker 1: Emily as well. But I know this to be true,
- 4:31Speaker 1: is that the beginning of showing up starts so small.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It begins with what is one small thing that I
- 4:40Speaker 1: can do in this moment that makes my current and
- 4:43Speaker 1: future self proud? And that's it. And then each day,
- 4:48Speaker 1: as you start to execute in that way, you'll realize
- 4:51Speaker 1: that you're starting to drift into this place of alignment
- 4:55Speaker 1: where your actions match up with your feelings, where you're
- 4:58Speaker 1: acting in a way where you you can answer the
- 5:00Speaker 1: question what's best for Emily, what's best for inserting my
- 5:05Speaker 1: name here? Sometimes showing up for yourself means letting down
- 5:09Speaker 1: other people, and no one wants to do that. But
- 5:13Speaker 1: ultimately this is a little lame, But I'm going to
- 5:16Speaker 1: say it. The ones who mind don't matter, and the
- 5:19Speaker 1: ones that matter don't mind, and that's it. So right
- 5:23Speaker 1: now I'm in a phase of really asking myself, how
- 5:26Speaker 1: do I show up in a way that makes my
- 5:28Speaker 1: current self and my future self proud? What small things
- 5:32Speaker 1: can I do? What small pauses can I take? Trust me?
- 5:37Speaker 1: It all adds up my prompt for you this week,
- 5:41Speaker 1: what does it look like when you show up for
- 5:44Speaker 1: yourself and what does that typically involve? What does it
- 5:48Speaker 1: look like when you show up for yourself and what
- 5:51Speaker 1: does it typically involve? And now a listener.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Question as a future off for summer break. I'm noticing
- 5:59Speaker 2: that I am and having a hard time slowing down
- 6:02Speaker 2: and not feeling like I have to do things all
- 6:06Speaker 2: the time and be productive. My question for you is,
- 6:10Speaker 2: when things slow down, how do you embrace the calm
- 6:14Speaker 2: and allow for that space before things ramp back up again.
- 6:19Speaker 1: This is a good question and candidly something that has
- 6:23Speaker 1: been an exercise for me, and that how does a
- 6:26Speaker 1: muscle strengthen you give it something to push up against.
- 6:29Speaker 1: How does your will strengthen you also give it something
- 6:32Speaker 1: to push up against. For me, this being okay with stillness,
- 6:37Speaker 1: being okay with the slowdown has truly been an exercise
- 6:42Speaker 1: that has required strengthening. And what I will say is
- 6:48Speaker 1: that when you get to a point where you can
- 6:51Speaker 1: appreciate the ebb and flow, then you can get a
- 6:55Speaker 1: little bit more comfortable with that stillness. Just because you
- 7:01Speaker 1: are in a slow period right now doesn't mean you
- 7:06Speaker 1: won't get back to that pace that makes you feel
- 7:09Speaker 1: a little bit more alive at times. And something I
- 7:13Speaker 1: do to really embrace these slower periods is I have
- 7:17Speaker 1: a list of things that I wish I had the
- 7:18Speaker 1: time to do. So there's books on there I want
- 7:22Speaker 1: to read. There are candidly things that I want to
- 7:24Speaker 1: write about, whether that is a prompt or reflect on
- 7:27Speaker 1: a certain memory. There are places that I want to go,
- 7:31Speaker 1: some of them that are absolutely free in New York,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and I've just never made the time, and so candidly
- 7:37Speaker 1: having this list makes me feel like I have options.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And it also circling back brings me back into this
- 7:46Speaker 1: deep gratitude for the opportunity to slow down, to find
- 7:51Speaker 1: the time. That reframe is really important when we think
- 7:55Speaker 1: about slowing it down instead of thinking this, this is
- 8:00Speaker 1: a time where I feel a little bit blah, a
- 8:03Speaker 1: little bit like what's going on? I'm lacking structure. What
- 8:07Speaker 1: if you looked at it as Wow, what an opportunity
- 8:11Speaker 1: to do the thing that I've been wanting to do.
- 8:15Speaker 1: What an opportunity to rest, What an opportunity to fill
- 8:20Speaker 1: my cup up and do the inquiry as to what
- 8:24Speaker 1: it would take for you to fill your cup up.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Embrace the rest. It's not easy. I get it. I'm
- 8:32Speaker 1: a little bit anxious with it too, but that list
- 8:35Speaker 1: has been a really helpful tool for me and also
- 8:38Speaker 1: that powerful, powerful reframe what an opportunity it is to
- 8:43Speaker 1: have this slower time. That's it for this week, Another
- 8:49Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
- 9:00Speaker 2: He
