- 0:22SPEAKER_00: The intro for the long-running NBC soap opera, The Days of Our Lives, proclaims, like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: You know this line is more than a great introduction to a soap opera, it's also the absolute truth.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The truth is that the sand in your hourglass is gonna run out one day.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: It's gonna run out in mine as well.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: We all have a limited amount of time on this earth, so what will be left after you're gone?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Certainly there will be social media posts, mementos, people's memories, and what you created, but those things can fade over time.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Your words, by contrast, can be immortal.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We all have the same amount of time in this life.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Life is never going to be ideal and things are not gonna slow down.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: There's always gonna be something happening.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And the truth is that you have to write in the midst of an imperfect life, in the mess and the muck of what's happening all around you.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: In the musical Hamilton, which came out a few years ago and happens to be one of my favorite musicals ever, Eliza Hamilton asks her husband, Alexander, why do you write like you're running out of time?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Well, that's a good question, not just for Alexander, but for you and I as well.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Because the truth is that we're all running out of time.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: The sand is running out on all of our lives, every single moment.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: You don't have an infinite number of days.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: You only have a specific amount of time on this earth.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Now, nobody knows what time that is, but none of us is going to be immortal except what we put into our words, which can live long, long after us.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So how will you spend the days you have, and what kind of words will you put down that people can remember long after you're gone?
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question Does knowing your life will come to an end someday motivate you to make the most of every day?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Why or why not?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you tomorrow.
