- 0:33thirteen hundred Zone Craig Wayne Cameron Parker, let's hear from
- 0:38Longhorn's women's basketball coach Vick Schaeffer and talk about First
- 0:43of all, there's what this is an introduction cam with Greg.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Thank you the commissioner. Yeah, Greg Sankie introducing Fix Shaeffer.
- 0:52Speaker 2: He was the first coach to speak today or you
- 0:55assumed me yesterday at the SEC media Days. And of
- 0:58course Fixed Safe was a Mississippi state beforehand, and him
- 1:02and Sinkie have this relationship. So you can kind of
- 1:04tell that these two gentlemen know each other very well
- 1:07because even in fixed statement opening statement, he does reference
- 1:10Reg sink I see all right.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Here's the commission leading into Vick's opening comments.
- 1:15Speaker 4: First coach of the afternoon is our first coach from
- 1:17one of our new member of universities, Vick Schaeffer. Vic
- 1:20is in his fifth year as a head coach at
- 1:22the University of Texas. His fortieth year of coaching is
- 1:26twentieth as a head coach. So Vic and I have
- 1:29intersected all along our career journeys. We first met when
- 1:33he was the head coach at sam Houston State University,
- 1:36literally driving the van first team back then lived that
- 1:41life for a while. He moved to Arkansas to work
- 1:44with Gary Blair as an assistant coach. Was at Texas
- 1:46A and M. Then we re introduced ourselves. I guess
- 1:50it was at the celebration event when we added.
- 1:53Speaker 1: A and M.
- 1:53Speaker 4: And he moved to Mississippi State, where he coached eight years,
- 1:56leading his team to two final fours. Today, October sixteenth
- 2:02is his thirty first wedding anniversary. So I knew I
- 2:06knew Vic when he was the head coach at sam
- 2:09Houston State and his wife was an assistant coach, Holly,
- 2:11at the University of Texas at Arlington. At his wedding,
- 2:15I'm reading he's saying all my exes live in Texas,
- 2:18so you can ask about that and Vic and I
- 2:21actually don't know this until I read this right now.
- 2:24He runs regularly and I got my four miles in
- 2:26this morning as well. So the university of Texas head
- 2:29women's basketball coach Mick Shaeffer.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Thank you, Commissioner. We have known each other a.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Long time, and we've obviously in our career pass have.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Come a long way.
- 2:43Speaker 5: I think, as the old saying goes, so excited about it,
- 2:49the opportunity to be here today as the head coach
- 2:52at the University of Texas, and excited to have Rory
- 2:55Harmon and Madison Booker with me too. Outstanding young ladies
- 2:59at are not only great players, but are two tremendous
- 3:03young ladies. So we're excited to be a part of
- 3:06this conference. I'm very familiar with the conference obviously, and
- 3:10as I've spent six years an assistant at Arkansas in
- 3:13it and eight years as head coach at Mississippi State,
- 3:16so back in some familiar stomping grounds.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah, he certainly is now.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Of course, Vick Schaeffer was part of a national championship
- 3:27program as an assistant under Gary Blair at Texas A
- 3:31and M. That was the twenty eleven team, and that
- 3:33was before the AGG He's got into the SEC, but
- 3:37there are other Gary Blair former assistants who are now
- 3:41coaching in the SEC. And he was asked about coaching
- 3:43against that coaching tree.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Well, yeah, coach, you know, I was with him fifteen years,
- 3:49and he's had several assistants throughout the throughout his career,
- 3:54and you know, there's a there's several of us out
- 3:57there that are still doing it and still still.
- 3:59Speaker 1: In this great game.
- 4:01Speaker 5: And you know, I think again, coach and I we
- 4:06were together a long time, won a lot of games together.
- 4:09We had some great, great experiences together both at Arkansas.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And at A and M.
- 4:14Speaker 5: And he's so special to me. I learned, you know,
- 4:21being with him fifteen years. He's a seven or eight
- 4:24time Hall of Famer. I mean, shame on you if
- 4:26you don't learn anything being around him. And I learned
- 4:30so many valuable lessons that you know, have allowed me
- 4:35to have any any of.
- 4:36Speaker 1: The success that I've had.
- 4:38Speaker 5: And so it's it's pretty special, you know. I think
- 4:42as a head coach now, I try to do some
- 4:45of those same things and mentor and developed coaches. I've
- 4:50had four former players on my staff forever. This year
- 4:53I only have two, but for the last four or
- 4:56five six years, I've had four former players on my staff,
- 4:59just trying to give them an opportunity to get in
- 5:01the game, and because I think that's that's our job,
- 5:05you know, as part of what we do as head coaches,
- 5:07and certainly coach was did that as well, so you know,
- 5:13he's still talked to him regularly. He's somebody that I
- 5:18love dearly. And again, he's somebody that I really appreciate.
- 5:23I'll tell you this about Coach Blair. Nobody knows the
- 5:25history of our game or appreciates the history of our.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Game more than that man, and he is.
- 5:34Speaker 5: He's just He's made an unbelievable impact in my life,
- 5:37and I'm forever grateful.
- 5:39Speaker 3: He was also asked how SEC women's basketball has evolved
- 5:46from the days when he was first starting out in
- 5:48the game as a coach.
- 5:49Speaker 5: You know, you have to remember when I got in
- 5:51the league, you had powerhouses. You know, Pat Summit's teams
- 5:55were Georgia with Coach Landers. You know, Joe Champion was
- 6:02finishing up his career and had some great teams at Auburn.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It was a monster league then.
- 6:10Speaker 5: And as a young coach, I can remember sitting courtside
- 6:14at SEC tournaments scouting and going and that's when you
- 6:19really as an assistant, you sit there and go, well,
- 6:22when I've become a head coach, I want my team
- 6:25to look like that team. I want my team to
- 6:27play like that team, and so I really have tried to,
- 6:31you know, throughout the course of that time. You know,
- 6:34you go from ninety seven to ninety eight. My first
- 6:36year at Arkansas we finished sixth, and we can paid
- 6:40it to the final four, you know, and to where
- 6:45we are today.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And you know, I.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Think it's a different time, in a different day, but
- 6:50I think it's you know, the parody that we have
- 6:53in our league right now is really incredible. Back then,
- 6:56you had some really dominant teams and then you had
- 6:59some some teams that maybe weren't you know, they couldn't
- 7:04beat those top teams. I think in our league right now,
- 7:06you've got on any given night, if you're not ready
- 7:09to play, you won't get beat, You'll get embarrassed. And
- 7:12so I think that's where the credibility of our league
- 7:15is tremendous. Coaches, Hall of Fame coaches. You've got future
- 7:19WNBA players, night in and night out. And so I
- 7:24think the you know, leaving the league that I just
- 7:27left to come to this one, all I did was
- 7:29jumped out of the frying panning into the grease.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So it's it's just a you know, it's a monster,
- 7:36and I think you've got to prepare for that.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I think that's why our conference and our coaches are
- 7:41so adamant about staying at sixteen games, because our league
- 7:46is that good, and yet every year we still have
- 7:51a large amount of teams making the NCAA Tournament because
- 7:54of that.
- 7:55Speaker 1: So it's, you know, it's a challenge in a night out.
- 8:00Speaker 5: But I think I've seen, I've been able to see
- 8:04front row an evolution of a conference. And again, I
- 8:08think the parody is what really separates us right now.
- 8:12Speaker 3: The two players he brought with it, Madison Booker, a
- 8:14National Freshman the year, Rory Harmon, who was a preseason
- 8:17All American last year before sustaining the knee injury. And
- 8:20he was asked, You've seen an awful lot from these two.
- 8:23What have you not seen from Madison Booker yet? And
- 8:28what can Rory Harmon bring.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Back to the team.
- 8:31Speaker 5: You know, I think last year I saw a little
- 8:34bit of everything for Madison, you know, as a freshman,
- 8:39as a young player early in her career. Having that,
- 8:42we'll be blanket in Rory Harmon, who's your point guard
- 8:46running your team?
- 8:48Speaker 1: And I said this earlier.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I thought, I thought Rory was really really good last year,
- 8:54was on pace to have a first team All American
- 8:56season as well. But I thought she created Madison and
- 9:00created a lot of opportunities for Rory, and of course
- 9:04Rory being a point guard, she creates opportunities for everybody.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And then when Rory went down.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Most of the time, y'all in basketball, when your point
- 9:16guard goes down, your two guard is who you might
- 9:20lean on.
- 9:22Speaker 1: We went to our three player in Madison.
- 9:25Speaker 5: But I knew after recruiting Madison her entire high school
- 9:30career and knowing my team that I had last year,
- 9:34Madison Booker was the answer.
- 9:36Speaker 1: It wasn't a tryout. That's who was going to be
- 9:40our point guard.
- 9:41Speaker 5: And while we had some bumps in the road along
- 9:45the way early, the kid has so much presence for
- 9:49such a young player, she had tremendous.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Presence on the floor.
- 9:56Speaker 5: She nothing rattled her her first three four minutes in
- 10:00that very first game against Baylor, when we only had
- 10:02three days to get ready, that was the worst of
- 10:06the worst. After that, I took her out, and then
- 10:10when we put her back in I never saw that again.
- 10:14She was just she was really ready to embrace the
- 10:18role that she was in. And so you have to
- 10:21give the kid a ton of credit what she was
- 10:24able to do leading that team. That team won thirty
- 10:28three games. In the history of Texas women's basketball, they've
- 10:32only won more games one time, and that's when they
- 10:34won the national championship in nineteen eighty six and they
- 10:38were thirty four to oh But that team would not
- 10:41have been that if it hadn't have been for Madison
- 10:44Booker embracing being the point guard. So now you fast
- 10:48forward to where we are now, Madison Booker, there's nobody
- 10:50more excited on our team that Rory Harmon's back than
- 10:53Madison Booker because she wants to go over there and
- 10:55get on the wing where she's really comfortable.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Just think that it allows us as a team.
- 11:03Speaker 5: We've got a lot of flexibility there, and we have
- 11:07a special freshman in Breonna Preston who's going to be
- 11:10an unbelievable point guard force.
- 11:13Speaker 1: But Rory just.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Rory's presence, how hard she plays, the energy that she
- 11:22plays with permeates through my team every day, every game,
- 11:28and I think she really is a settling influence on
- 11:33my entire team, and it gives my team a lot
- 11:36of confidence.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And I know this.
- 11:37Speaker 5: It gives her head coach a lot of confidence to
- 11:40know that we have her back on the floor leading
- 11:43our team. And so it's a really good feeling to
- 11:48know we've got great guard play.
- 11:52Speaker 1: You win with guard play in basketball. You have notes.
- 11:55Speaker 5: You can have all the size in the world, be
- 11:57if you don't have a guard play, you got no chance.
- 11:59We've got guard play this year, and I've got depth
- 12:02at guard play with Brie and Jordan Lee to exceptional freshmen.
- 12:10Leilophilia y'all is a monster. She's gonna be so good.
- 12:16Shay Holly has been the glued to my my program
- 12:20for the last few years. So I just named off
- 12:24five six guards that they're all gonna play every night,
- 12:28and they're gonna play a lot, and they're all going
- 12:29to impact our team.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And so.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I think our team, our future is in really good
- 12:37shape at the guard spot. And this year's team, we
- 12:41finally have some depth. I just haven't had it the
- 12:44last couple of years. And give those teams credit, they've
- 12:47learned how to stat of foul trouble and play play
- 12:49through some issues, but this year's team we finally have depth.
- 12:54Speaker 1: All right.
- 12:55Speaker 3: So there's from Vick Shaefer, Texas women's head coach. Well here,
- 12:58Rodney Terry coming up next, as well as more from
- 13:01Steve Sarcasian. We'll be back to wrap up our number
- 13:03two on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Phone.
