- 0:17Stay with us as we explore how to anchor this emotion to Jesus Christ and embrace
- 0:23his ongoing sanctification process.
- 0:25Welcome to Couples' Journey with Christ Jesus blog series entitled,
- 0:30Making a Guilt-Free Drop. Here's part one.
- 0:34It's another week to reflect on the matter of guilt. We briefly touched on this
- 0:38topic during the Week 29 blog series, Sleeping Well, where we discussed guilt
- 0:44alongside conscience and the role of the Holy Spirit.
- 0:47We posted the definition in Day 2, but if you missed that series,
- 0:51the link for Week 29 study guide is available in the caption.
- 0:55Guilt is an important emotion.
- 0:57It helps us recognize when we've fallen short of moral standards or our conscience.
- 1:02However, feeling guilty doesn't always mean we're comfortable with it.
- 1:07It often comes with a realization of our mistakes, which can be tough to deal with.
- 1:11While guilt is a crucial emotion, how we respond to it matters just as much.
- 1:16Sadly, many people struggle to navigate this emotion properly,
- 1:20especially in connecting it with God's purpose for us, to be transformed into Christ-likeness.
- 1:26It's a common mistake to use the concept of guilt and the idea of accepting
- 1:31the gospel as an excuse to overlook the ongoing process of sanctification, that is.
- 1:37Growing, and being transformed by the Holy Spirit. Yes, Jesus Christ paid for our sins.
- 1:43Our salvation is secure in Him, but submitting to His authority involves ongoing
- 1:48growth and holiness, especially through our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
- 1:53We've also taken time to understand how to respond when guilt suddenly shows up.
- 1:58Sometimes, the enemy will tempt us into falling into old responses,
- 2:02but the Holy Spirit's influence helps us move forward. This week,
- 2:07we're not just diving into guilt itself.
- 2:09We're focusing on how we can truly anchor this emotion to Jesus Christ.
- 2:14One of the most quoted verses when guilt hits is Romans 8 verse 1.
- 2:18Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 2:23We often use no condemnation when our mistakes or shortcomings come to light,
- 2:28or when guilt starts to creep in.
- 2:30Taking time to meditate on this verse more deeply can really help us navigate those feelings.
- 2:36Especially in marriage. The
- 2:37word condemnation here comes from the Greek katakryma, meaning penalty.
- 2:42In the biblical sense, it refers to a guilty verdict from God,
- 2:46resulting in eternal separation or death because of sin.
- 2:50It's about being judged as guilty and deserving of punishment.
- 2:54If we have already accepted Christ and committed ourselves to being his followers.
- 2:58Then this is our understanding of condemnation.
- 3:01We'll discuss below how this relates to the sanctification process.
- 3:05Because the world defines condemnation as feelings of guilt,
- 3:09shame, or harsh judgment, either from ourselves or others, there's often a disconnect.
- 3:15If we truly do not recognize God's authority, even if we've accepted Christ
- 3:20but still live in the flesh.
- 3:22Our definition of condemnation may focus on harsh judgments from others rather
- 3:27than the eternal consequences.
- 3:28So, how does this biblical definition of condemnation influence our journey
- 3:33of sanctification, especially as we immerse ourselves with fellow believers,
- 3:38perhaps even sharing a similar faith journey with our spouse?
- 3:41Since our faith journey is about continually growing closer to God through Jesus
- 3:46Christ and experiencing the spiritual realm via the Holy Spirit.
- 3:51We often think that when circumstances reveal our shortcomings or past sins,
- 3:56we should immediately fight guilt by claiming the gospel's truth.
- 4:00While standing on that truth is right, we must also remember that God is transforming us.
- 4:06When sin or its consequences are shown, whether through our own mistakes or
- 4:10external circumstances, the right response is humility before God's authority.
- 4:15Instead of blaming others, using guilt as an excuse, or passing the pain on
- 4:21to others, especially our spouse, we should turn to the Holy Spirit.
- 4:25Ask God to reveal areas where we need growth, and respond with humility rather
- 4:30than defensiveness or blame, recognizing that this is part of our sanctification process.
- 4:35If we truly claim to be followers of Christ and involved in a community of believers,
- 4:41when circumstances highlight our shortcomings or past mistakes.
- 4:45We should ask the Holy Spirit to help us respond correctly. We need grace for
- 4:50ourselves and others, to recognize what God is revealing, and to continue walking
- 4:55with humility and compassion.
- 4:57Ultimately, we're here to glorify God through a life that is being transformed.
- 5:02Navigating this won't always be easy. Our shortcomings and past consequences are real.
- 5:08But God's transforming work invites us to be humble and to fully embrace His authority.
- 5:14Sincerely doing this requires us to stay anchored in Christ and keep the Holy
- 5:18Spirit's influence active in our lives.
