- 0:32This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:34podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:36thirteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable.
- 0:39I'm currently joined by Lisa Scardena, who is
- 0:42the chief strategy officer at Providence Provider Solutions
- 0:45and Development.
- 0:46So Lisa, thanks for being here. And let's
- 0:48have you start off by introducing yourself and
- 0:50telling us a little more about your background.
- 0:52Thanks. Glad to be here. I've been with
- 0:55the Providence Health System for over twenty years
- 0:57in a variety of different roles,
- 0:59at the regional and system levels and
- 1:02have found that I just have a real
- 1:04passion for the work,
- 1:06with our physicians.
- 1:08I've served in marketing and strategy and business
- 1:10development roles. And a real highlight was, serving
- 1:13as chief administrative officer for the medical group
- 1:16in the Oregon region.
- 1:17And that's where I really came to appreciate
- 1:20the complexity of the practice environment and the
- 1:22pressures that the physicians and providers are under,
- 1:25as well as our operations leaders and looking
- 1:28for ways to to ease that burden,
- 1:31and just allow everyone to do their best
- 1:33work.
- 1:34That led me to provider
- 1:36solutions and development, PS and D. And we
- 1:39recruit for health care organizations across the country.
- 1:43We're wholly owned by Providence as an LLC,
- 1:46but we serve 30 other, partners across the
- 1:49country.
- 1:49And really matching
- 1:51physicians and providers into those settings
- 1:53is really just a a sacred moment of
- 1:56ensuring that the physicians and providers are set
- 1:58up for success and those organizations are set
- 2:01up for success, especially given all of the
- 2:03pressures with,
- 2:05challenges with the shortage and other and other
- 2:07things happening across the industry.
- 2:09Absolutely.
- 2:11And I'd love to hear about your growth
- 2:13strategy over the next year or two.
- 2:16Yeah. I'm I'm super excited, and I think
- 2:18that a lot of the sessions at the
- 2:19conference here have us looking beyond sustainability
- 2:22and into just wholly new transformation and how
- 2:25we're approaching our work given,
- 2:28the pressures that the industry at large is
- 2:30under.
- 2:30For PS and D, we're really thinking about
- 2:33new and different offerings for,
- 2:36that meet the needs of the physicians and
- 2:38providers in a better way as well as
- 2:40those hiring organizations.
- 2:42We've got some new offerings where we're leveraging
- 2:45some of our best practices and thinking about
- 2:47ways to
- 2:48kind of lower the barrier to entry, if
- 2:50you will, into working with us that,
- 2:54we've got a a new strategy that involves
- 2:57really leveraging some of our marketing
- 2:59assets,
- 3:00on behalf of our partner organizations in new
- 3:02and different ways. And really, at the core
- 3:04of it is that we really wanna meet
- 3:06physicians and providers where they're at and and
- 3:08help those organizations
- 3:10bring in the the the providers, the doctors
- 3:12that they need for their communities.
- 3:14Our mission is,
- 3:16building healthier communities one provider at a time,
- 3:18and that's what our recruitment teams are doing
- 3:20every day.
- 3:21And what is the most exciting or impactful
- 3:24initiative or project that you're working on right
- 3:26now?
- 3:27Well, I think I think what really has
- 3:30me excited is thinking about how
- 3:33the technology
- 3:34is really evolving
- 3:36and we're seeing lift from the application of
- 3:40AI.
- 3:41You know, I think that we've been in
- 3:42a a kind of we're all we've all
- 3:44been on a learning curve about the potential
- 3:46for AI, but we're hearing from the main
- 3:48stage here and in the sessions
- 3:50at Becker's about how we're seeing improvements to
- 3:53the practice setting for our physicians.
- 3:56And we are feeling the same thing on
- 3:58the recruitment side,
- 4:00where
- 4:00there are some proven technologies now
- 4:03that will ultimately enable
- 4:06our recruiters to deepen their relationships
- 4:09with the doctors. And that I'm really excited
- 4:12when we think about the application of technology
- 4:15to segment audiences,
- 4:17to allow us to reach out to our
- 4:19audiences differently
- 4:21in an in more meaningful ways with the
- 4:23information that they're looking for.
- 4:25If if we can use technology in that
- 4:27way, how can that then unlock
- 4:30more of a human connection
- 4:33along the way in the relationship building?
- 4:36Recruitment is just,
- 4:37as as is all of healthcare, but in
- 4:40the recruitment space, having that authentic connection with
- 4:43our physicians and providers as they're considering their
- 4:45next opportunity
- 4:47really requires that,
- 4:49deep connection. And and so how how we're
- 4:52marrying technology with that relationship orientation
- 4:56is the thing that I'm super excited about
- 4:58right now.
- 4:59Absolutely. And what is the most important thing
- 5:02health care leaders and executives should do right
- 5:05now to make sure their organizations are successful
- 5:07in the future?
- 5:08I think that's a great question.
- 5:10And
- 5:11what I'm thinking about is
- 5:14really the voice of the customer
- 5:17in our work.
- 5:18You know, some of the sessions from the
- 5:20main stage that were most inspiring to me
- 5:22is to think about
- 5:24behind the scenes,
- 5:26what are those financial models that we need
- 5:28to be considering.
- 5:30But front of mind is really,
- 5:33thinking about the patient experience, the provider experience.
- 5:38I think that what we've seen within PS
- 5:41and D within our own teams,
- 5:44and and it's been interesting even
- 5:46in challenging times, our engagement scores are up
- 5:50across our teams that there's a level of
- 5:53transparency that we've brought to our teams and
- 5:55a commitment to rounding with our teams.
- 5:58And, you know, we're we're working in a
- 6:02a virtual environment. And so to just take
- 6:04the time
- 6:05to, do that kind of rounding and and,
- 6:10find ways to bring feedback from the front
- 6:12line into problem solving
- 6:15has has really
- 6:17kind of energized our group, I think,
- 6:20over the course of this past year. And
- 6:22so when I think about the pressure that
- 6:24our leaders are under,
- 6:26not only is the rounding
- 6:28allowing for identification of problems that need to
- 6:30be solved, but I think it kinda just
- 6:32enlivens the workplace when we're just having real
- 6:35conversations and connecting with each other without
- 6:38agendas and and task lists.
- 6:41So so that's that's I know it's hard
- 6:43to take the time, but even Eric Wexler
- 6:46from Providence in the in the opening keynote
- 6:48talked about how he replies to every email.
- 6:51He's got his ear to the ground, and
- 6:53I really respect him for that because
- 6:55we can get caught up in in meetings
- 6:57and projects and and kind of forget about
- 6:59the opportunity to to just have that human
- 7:01connection.
- 7:03Absolutely. Well, Lisa, thank you so much for
- 7:05joining me this morning on the Becker's Healthcare
- 7:07Podcast. Again, we are recording live at the
- 7:09thirteenth annual CEO and CFO round table. Thank
- 7:12you.
