- Lucas: Hej again, Luna! Ready for another episode of Learn Danish with Fexingo? Luna: Hej Lucas! Yeah, I'm ready. What are we learning today? Lucas: Today, we're talking about sports. Very useful if you want to chat about what you do in your free time. Luna: Oh, I love sports. Well, watching them, mostly. Lucas: That counts. Let's start with a big one in Denmark: fodbold. That's football, or soccer. Luna: Fodbold. Fodbold. Lucas: Good. Fodbold is a compound word: fod means foot, and bold means ball. So foot-ball. Luna: Oh, that makes sense. Fodbold. Lucas: Exactly. Now, to say you play it, we use the verb at spille. At spille means 'to play'. Luna: At spille. At spille. Lucas: And if you want to say 'I play football', you say: Jeg spiller fodbold. Spiller is the present tense form. Luna: Jeg spiller fodbold. Jeg spiller fodbold. Lucas: Great! Now you try saying it like you're telling me a fact. Luna: Okay... Jeg spiller fodbold. Lucas: Perfect. You're a natural. Now, let's add another sport: håndbold. That's handball. Luna: Håndbold. Håndbold. Like fodbold but with hand instead of foot. Lucas: Exactly! Hånd means hand, and bold is ball. So handball. Luna: So if I play handball, I say: Jeg spiller håndbold. Lucas: Yes! Jeg spiller håndbold. Say it. Luna: Jeg spiller håndbold. Lucas: Fantastic. Now, one more: svømning. That's swimming. Luna: Svømning. Svømning. That sounds like swimming, actually. Lucas: It does. Now, with svømning, we don't use 'spille' because swimming isn't a ball game. We use a different verb, but for now, you can just say: Jeg kan godt lide svømning. Luna: Jeg kan godt lide svømning. That means 'I like swimming'? Lucas: Exactly. But let's focus on the basics: today we have fodbold, håndbold, svømning, and the verb at spille. Luna: Okay. So I can say Jeg spiller fodbold, or Jeg spiller håndbold. Lucas: Right. And you can also ask someone: Spiller du fodbold? That means 'Do you play football?' Luna: Spiller du fodbold? Spiller du fodbold? That's a question. Lucas: Yes. The word order changes a bit in questions. But for now, let's practice with a tiny story. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Okay. There's a person named Mikkel. Mikkel spiller fodbold. He spiller fodbold every Saturday. Luna: Mikkel spiller fodbold. Lucas: His friend Emma spiller håndbold. She spiller håndbold on Tuesdays. Luna: Emma spiller håndbold. Lucas: And Mikkel's sister, Sofie, kan godt lide svømning. She svømmer every morning. Luna: Sofie kan godt lide svømning. Lucas: Good. Now, can you say: 'I play football' in Danish? Luna: Jeg spiller fodbold. Lucas: And 'Do you play handball?' Luna: Spiller du håndbold? Lucas: Perfect! And remember, svømning is a noun. So if you want to say 'I swim', you'd say 'Jeg svømmer'. But that's for another day. Luna: Okay, I'll stick with Jeg kan godt lide svømning for now. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick round of repetition. I'll say the English, you say the Danish. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Football. Luna: Fodbold. Lucas: To play. Luna: At spille. Lucas: I play football. Luna: Jeg spiller fodbold. Lucas: Handball. Luna: Håndbold. Lucas: Swimming. Luna: Svømning. Lucas: Excellent. You've got it. Now, before we wrap up, let's do a small role-play. I'll ask you a question, and you answer. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Spiller du fodbold? Luna: Ja, jeg spiller fodbold. Lucas: Great! And spiller du håndbold? Luna: Nej, jeg spiller ikke håndbold. Jeg kan godt lide svømning. Lucas: Oh, very nice! You used 'ikke' for negation, which we've learned before. Perfect. Luna: Tak! So today we learned fodbold, håndbold, svømning, and at spille. Lucas: Exactly. Practice those, and next time we'll maybe learn how to say 'I run' or 'I cycle'. But for now, you're doing great. Luna: I love how simple these words are. Fodbold, håndbold... Lucas: They are. And that's the beauty of Danish compounds. Thanks for listening to Learn Danish with Fexingo. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Hej hej!
