- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with my friend Alana Rizzo. And Alana,
- 0:07Speaker 1: we've got a lot of Pennant Race action to discuss,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and I want to start off by talking about one
- 0:12Speaker 1: of my favorite things every September, unknown players contributing in
- 0:16Speaker 1: a big way to Pennant Race contenders. And who am
- 0:20Speaker 1: I talking about. Let's just use the al Wes as
- 0:22Speaker 1: an example. Leo Reevis sign is a minor free agent
- 0:26Speaker 1: January twenty twenty three for the Mariners. Last night walk
- 0:30Speaker 1: off home run Leo Reevis Jason Alexander, thirty two years old,
- 0:35Speaker 1: undrafted free agent Houston picks him up seven scoreless for
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Astros last night and a huge win against the
- 0:41Speaker 1: Blue Jays. And finally, Michael Hellman Texas Rangers. Weaver claim
- 0:46Speaker 1: in May two huge homers against the Brewers in the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Rangers sweep this week. More of this fun is coming, Alana,
- 0:54Speaker 1: but we've got some serious stuff to discuss as well.
- 0:57Speaker 1: We do.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Ken great to be with you is always on this Thursday. Yeah,
- 1:00Speaker 2: they're looking to the young guns to make things happen
- 1:02Speaker 2: for them, but when you look at the other teams
- 1:04Speaker 2: ken that are typically perennial postseason contenders. You have to
- 1:08Speaker 2: think just when things are going great, they went bad.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Tell me more about the Mets situation.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The Mets were at one point this season the talk
- 1:16Speaker 1: of baseball. They were forty five and twenty four early June.
- 1:20Speaker 1: They look like the best team in the majors. Their
- 1:22Speaker 1: record was the best in the majors. And then the
- 1:25Speaker 1: rotation disintegrated and now they are looking at a real problem.
- 1:29Speaker 1: You could see on June twelfth, where they were best
- 1:31Speaker 1: record in the majors. Their rotation at that time was
- 1:35Speaker 1: the best by ERA and now it ranks twenty fourth
- 1:38Speaker 1: in the ERA. I shouldn't say now, since then it's
- 1:41Speaker 1: twenty fourth in the RA. And you see their record
- 1:43Speaker 1: since June thirteenth, the fourth worst in baseball. Their lead
- 1:48Speaker 1: in the Wildcard race is down to two games and
- 1:50Speaker 1: effectively over the Reds. It's one game because the Reds
- 1:54Speaker 1: hold the tiebreaker. The Giants are also two games back.
- 1:57Speaker 1: But the Mets, as they approached the finale of their
- 2:00Speaker 1: series in Philadelphia tonight, they've lost the first three games
- 2:04Speaker 1: of this series. They are in a position that they
- 2:07Speaker 1: never wanted to be in and they are looking if
- 2:11Speaker 1: this doesn't turn around, then if they can't hold on
- 2:14Speaker 1: at one of the most disappointing seasons in their history.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Joe Sherman of The New York Post has written about this.
- 2:19Speaker 1: He has basically asked the question, would this be the
- 2:22Speaker 1: most disappointing team, because of course they've spent three hundred
- 2:26Speaker 1: and forty million on this club, brought in Juan Soto,
- 2:28Speaker 1: signed some starting pitchers, and yet here they are life
- 2:32Speaker 1: and death to reach the postseason, not exactly allow on
- 2:35Speaker 1: what they had in mind.
- 2:37Speaker 3: No doubt about that. And across town.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Can the New York Yankees we thought I wrote them off,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I said they're not even gonna make the postseason?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Shows you what the heck? I know what's going on
- 2:45Speaker 3: with the Yanks.
- 2:46Speaker 1: The Yankees look like they were in good shape a
- 2:50Speaker 1: week ago, actually a couple of days ago. What happened?
- 2:53Speaker 1: They started off that Houston Toronto six game set by
- 2:58Speaker 1: going four and two. Then they had Detroit, and of
- 3:00Speaker 1: course they've got another tough series in back of this one,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and yet in the first two games against Detroit their
- 3:07Speaker 1: bullpen has fallen apart. They again raise all these questions
- 3:11Speaker 1: that look to be resolved. Their bullpen was the thing
- 3:14Speaker 1: that they fix the most at the trade deadline, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: yet except for Bednar, it remains something of a mess.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It's inconsistent, to say the least. And I don't know
- 3:25Speaker 1: where it's going with the Yankees right now. The division
- 3:27Speaker 1: looks pretty much out of reach. They're three games back,
- 3:30Speaker 1: as are the Red Sox of the Toronto Blue Jays,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and they've got a series against the Red Sox coming up,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and that series is going to be really important toward
- 3:39Speaker 1: determining which team would have home field advantage in the
- 3:42Speaker 1: wildcard round, if indeed that's how this ends up, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: it's certainly trending that way. You just look at the
- 3:47Speaker 1: standings here. The Yankees and Red Sox both up two
- 3:50Speaker 1: and a half games over the Mariners in the wildcard race.
- 3:53Speaker 1: They hold commanding positions. In other words, it's just a
- 3:56Speaker 1: matter of which one finishes ahead of the other. And
- 4:00Speaker 1: as for the rest of the wildcard race, you see
- 4:02Speaker 1: what's going on there. The Rangers are a game and
- 4:05Speaker 1: a half and back of the Mariners. The Mariners, in turn,
- 4:08Speaker 1: are only a game back of the Houston Astros in
- 4:11Speaker 1: the Ale West, so we could be looking at a
- 4:13Speaker 1: hugely wild finish in the West. But for the Yankees
- 4:18Speaker 1: and the Red Sox, it's going to be a question of, all, right,
- 4:21Speaker 1: where does this series start and that series. You can
- 4:24Speaker 1: make the case either way. Yankees prefer being at home,
- 4:27Speaker 1: Red Sox prefer being at home. Maybe the Yankees be
- 4:30Speaker 1: better off on the road so their fans don't turn
- 4:33Speaker 1: on them if things go awry, But no, I would
- 4:35Speaker 1: expect that every team in the postseason, in the wildcard
- 4:38Speaker 1: picture would prefer to be at home. It's as simple
- 4:41Speaker 1: as that. Comfortable and all the things that come with
- 4:44Speaker 1: playing at home.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you always hear about I get to sleep in
- 4:47Speaker 2: my own bed. That makes a big difference. Ken, you
- 4:49Speaker 2: were talking about the Rangers and the Astros in the
- 4:51Speaker 2: Al West. The Rangers lost all of their studs, yet
- 4:54Speaker 2: here they are we're still talking about them in terms
- 4:56Speaker 2: of a possible postseason contender.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I mentioned Cody Freeman is another one. Dustin Harris had
- 5:03Speaker 1: a big hit for them last week, and Asuna has
- 5:07Speaker 1: been also a contributor. Young guy. It's incredible what has
- 5:10Speaker 1: happened with their team. For I would say five months,
- 5:14Speaker 1: they were arguably the most disappointing team in baseball at
- 5:17Speaker 1: least right there with the Braves. My other World Series pick,
- 5:20Speaker 1: by the way, this year, Rangers and Braves had that workout,
- 5:22Speaker 1: but because of all the injuries they had in late August,
- 5:29Speaker 1: Simeon Evaldi Seger, you thought there's no way they're done,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and yet they've drawn energy from those players I just mentioned,
- 5:36Speaker 1: the younger, less experienced players. They're going to get Seger
- 5:40Speaker 1: back probably next week. Adolie s Garcia might be coming
- 5:43Speaker 1: back as well, and once that happens, I assume they'll
- 5:48Speaker 1: be in a really good spot to challenge the rest
- 5:50Speaker 1: of the way and see where they end up. They
- 5:53Speaker 1: play at City Field Friday night. It's fascinating series ahead
- 5:56Speaker 1: of us there. Rangers at Mets will be started by
- 6:01Speaker 1: none other and former Mets ace Jacob Dekron.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It's gonna be an interesting I tell you what, it's theater.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You can't make this stuff up. Ken, So let me
- 6:09Speaker 2: ask you this question, because we just don't know. Does
- 6:12Speaker 2: this mean we're going to get an exciting, unpredictable October
- 6:15Speaker 2: or are we really just gonna get a random champion
- 6:18Speaker 2: Because it doesn't seem Ken, in the thirty teams that
- 6:21Speaker 2: there's one that really sticks out.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Alna, I totally agree with you, and it certainly appears
- 6:27Speaker 1: from this vantage point right now as we look at this,
- 6:31Speaker 1: that this could be one of the more wide open
- 6:33Speaker 1: postseasons in recent memory. Now, the one caveat I'll say
- 6:37Speaker 1: to that is the Dodgers suddenly seem to have found
- 6:40Speaker 1: their rotation. And I know it's come against two last
- 6:44Speaker 1: place teams, the Orioles and Rockies, and the Rockies are horrific,
- 6:48Speaker 1: But Yamamoto and glass Now and Otani and Kershaw, all
- 6:54Speaker 1: of these guys are pitching well. Oh and I forgot
- 6:56Speaker 1: Blake Snell. He was really good last night. If those guys,
- 7:00Speaker 1: if they can find obviously a lot of quality in
- 7:04Speaker 1: their rotation, that's gonna give them an advantage, and that
- 7:07Speaker 1: would in my mind perhaps make them the favorite. But
- 7:09Speaker 1: that said, we've watched the Dodgers all season, Alana. You
- 7:13Speaker 1: watch them as closely as anyone. They've been an enigmatic team,
- 7:18Speaker 1: a team that's been somewhat disappointing. And maybe now they're
- 7:21Speaker 1: rounding into form and things are going to be better,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and Mookie BET's certainly playing better. But I don't know
- 7:27Speaker 1: that I entirely trust the Dodgers. Their bullpen has been
- 7:30Speaker 1: a bit of a mess, so we'll see. But to
- 7:33Speaker 1: your original point, yeah, it looks wide open the American League.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Who knows Tiger's and the Blue Jays two best teams
- 7:39Speaker 1: jockeying for the best record in the league home field
- 7:42Speaker 1: advantage throughout the American League playoffs. I don't know that
- 7:46Speaker 1: either as invincible. Jeff Hoffman gave up another homer last night.
- 7:49Speaker 1: The Tigers looked good the last two nights, but they
- 7:51Speaker 1: were kind of coming off lethargic run there for about
- 7:55Speaker 1: two weeks. So yeah, it's looking really interesting.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Let me ask you this about the can I have
- 8:00Speaker 2: my own opinion on it, but I want yours and
- 8:02Speaker 2: your perspective. You Nobu Yamamoto through one hundred and twelve pitches,
- 8:06Speaker 2: That's a career high for him. He gives up the
- 8:08Speaker 2: home run to Jackson Holliday. I think Andy pai Has
- 8:11Speaker 2: could have made a better attempt to get that ball,
- 8:13Speaker 2: considering a no hitter was going on, but that's neither
- 8:15Speaker 2: here nor there. Would you have sent Yama back out
- 8:18Speaker 2: or did Dave Roberts, in your opinion, make the right
- 8:20Speaker 2: call of bringing in the pen.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I don't know. It looks bad because of the outcome.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That's the only reason that looks bad to me. And
- 8:30Speaker 1: I would have sent him out, of course. And I
- 8:32Speaker 1: know it's a career high, but my gosh, we count
- 8:36Speaker 1: pitches all the time alone, and we count everything in
- 8:38Speaker 1: this sport, and understandably, so it's that kind of sport.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It's very statistically driven. But no hitters are special. No
- 8:45Speaker 1: hitters are once in a career perhaps for most pitchers.
- 8:49Speaker 1: And Yamamoto had a chance there, of course you send
- 8:51Speaker 1: them back out. I don't even think there's any question.
- 8:54Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 8:54Speaker 2: See, I wouldn't have I think Dave made the right
- 8:57Speaker 2: decision because the next pitch, maybe one thirteen, maybe he
- 9:00Speaker 2: blows out his arm.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And you got to think that you would believe, you
- 9:03Speaker 3: would believe Ken Rosenthal that your bullpen could get one out.
- 9:06Speaker 2: That is neither here nor there, My friends, all right,
- 9:09Speaker 2: coming up here, don't forget to get your questions in
- 9:11Speaker 2: for Ken Grill and Ken is next. And by the way,
- 9:14Speaker 2: we have some breaking news right after.
- 9:16Speaker 4: This ftfam let's talk about fair Harbor. And if you're listening,
- 9:20Speaker 4: I hope that you watch this conversation at some point
- 9:23Speaker 4: because we're doing show and telcrats shorts. They can be
- 9:27Speaker 4: used as a bathing suit. And the liner, which we
- 9:32Speaker 4: call butter, is the game breaker. It's the playmaker because
- 9:37Speaker 4: it's different.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Your worn shorts that are not like this, and the
- 9:42Speaker 1: liner sucks. They are buttery on your butt.
- 9:46Speaker 4: I just came up with something for them. Your liner sucks.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Get Fair Harbor Liner, seriously give it a shot. I'm
- 9:55Speaker 4: not just saying this. The Butter analogy plays and ftfam
- 10:00Speaker 4: you know we're hooking you up. Fairharbor Clothing dot Com
- 10:03Speaker 4: slash foul twenty percent off when you use the code
- 10:05Speaker 4: foul on your first purchase. Once again, that's fair harbo
- 10:10Speaker 4: r Clothing dot com backslash foul for twenty percent off
- 10:14Speaker 4: your first purchase and use promo code foul.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Time to get those questions in for Ken Rosenthal. But
- 10:26Speaker 2: we do actually have some breaking news. Can you and
- 10:28Speaker 2: Britt Jeroli, both of the athletic of course, have some
- 10:31Speaker 2: Orioles news.
- 10:32Speaker 1: What is it? Well, you see it right there, and
- 10:34Speaker 1: it's interesting because some Oriel fans, perhaps we're wondering if
- 10:38Speaker 1: Mike Elias would be back at all, considering how disappointing
- 10:42Speaker 1: the team has been this season. It turns out the
- 10:44Speaker 1: team promoted him to president of baseball Operations last winter,
- 10:49Speaker 1: and now they're starting to build out their front office
- 10:51Speaker 1: under him. You remember last week they hired Danny Has,
- 10:54Speaker 1: national scouting Director to be a special assistant and their
- 10:58Speaker 1: plan right now is to hire a general manager under Elias,
- 11:02Speaker 1: so another executive to help things along for the Orioles.
- 11:06Speaker 1: This represents obviously a show of faith in Elias. That
- 11:10Speaker 1: show of faith came even before this disappointing season. And
- 11:14Speaker 1: this is a team that has played very well since
- 11:16Speaker 1: late May forty nine and forty one since May twenty eighth,
- 11:20Speaker 1: sixth best record in the majors, and they firmly believe
- 11:23Speaker 1: that if they get their pitching straight, which is happening
- 11:27Speaker 1: to some extent with Trevor Rodgers emerging, Kyle Bradish ninth back,
- 11:31Speaker 1: if they can get their pitching right, and they've got
- 11:33Speaker 1: to rebuild their whole bullpend this winner, then they can
- 11:35Speaker 1: be back to where they were in twenty three and
- 11:38Speaker 1: twenty four.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I really thought this team was going to make
- 11:40Speaker 2: a postseason push. Ken When this season started, it was
- 11:44Speaker 2: like they looked so good top to bottom.
- 11:46Speaker 3: What went wrong.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Starting pitching, and that was the failure of this club.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's the reason Brandon Hyde was fired as manager. The
- 11:55Speaker 1: starting pitching was just awful at the start of the season.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Charlie Morton was kind of the symbol of this all.
- 12:00Speaker 1: He found it and was good enough to get traded
- 12:02Speaker 1: to the Detroit Tigers, where he now is part of
- 12:04Speaker 1: their rotation. But they had injuries. Grayson Rodriguez was one
- 12:08Speaker 1: of them. They had disappointing performances. They just weren't good
- 12:11Speaker 1: enough in that part of it. And the other thing, Alana,
- 12:14Speaker 1: They've had some stagnation and regression among their young position players. Now.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Injuries are part of that too, with Rushman and Kowser
- 12:23Speaker 1: and others. Westburg's another one, but Donough Henderson hasn't been
- 12:28Speaker 1: as good. Jackson Howne really hasn't broken through yet. Now
- 12:31Speaker 1: they have Besiah, they will go into next season confident
- 12:35Speaker 1: that these guys are gonna bounce back. Progression as a
- 12:39Speaker 1: young player is not always linear, and we'll see what happens. Then.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's going to be an interesting team to watch.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Do you think that Adlee Rischmand is there next.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Year, Yes, no question. And he's there because Samuel Bissio
- 12:51Speaker 1: is not proven as a catcher. There are questions in
- 12:54Speaker 1: the industry whether he will ever catch, could be a
- 12:57Speaker 1: first baseman DH in the long runs. Short term, Rushman
- 13:01Speaker 1: is the better defender, and the Orioles believe he's going
- 13:04Speaker 1: to bounce back. Now. It was a difficult second half
- 13:07Speaker 1: of twenty four and a rough start to twenty five
- 13:11Speaker 1: before he got hurt. But Atli Ruschman, they still believe
- 13:15Speaker 1: and see as a centerpiece of what they're going to do.
- 13:18Speaker 2: All right, love the information there on the O's ken.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Let's get in a question from our chat. Bernie Suarez
- 13:23Speaker 2: wants to know he's talking about the Astros. Are the
- 13:25Speaker 2: Astros in trouble? The Rangers seem to be making a run.
- 13:29Speaker 1: The Rangers are definitely making a run. The Mariners are
- 13:32Speaker 1: playing better after their little lull six and fifteen whatever
- 13:35Speaker 1: it was. I don't know why that. I'd say the
- 13:38Speaker 1: Astros are in trouble, but there are clear questions there.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Their offense has been a disappointment, even after the return
- 13:44Speaker 1: of Jordan Alvarez. They rank something like twenty fourth in
- 13:47Speaker 1: the majors and runs per game, and remember the deadline
- 13:50Speaker 1: they reinforced the offense with Correa, with Jesus Sanchez, with
- 13:54Speaker 1: Ramon Urias. So for whatever reason, they have not clicked offensively.
- 13:59Speaker 1: They've had some pitching injuries too, just this week, Luis
- 14:03Speaker 1: Garcia on top of Spencer Arraghetty and then Josh Hater
- 14:07Speaker 1: that was a couple of weeks ago. He's out for
- 14:09Speaker 1: the rest of the season as well. So I don't
- 14:12Speaker 1: know that they're in trouble. They've got the pedigree still
- 14:15Speaker 1: to hold on in the Ale West, but it's a
- 14:18Speaker 1: lot closer than they ever imagined. It would be thinking
- 14:21Speaker 1: that with the deadline and with Alvarez coming back, that
- 14:24Speaker 1: they would ignite, and that really has not happened.
- 14:26Speaker 2: All right, let's talk about the Atlanta Braves. I really
- 14:28Speaker 2: thought that this was going to be it for the Skip.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I thought Brian Snicker was going to hang up the cleats,
- 14:33Speaker 2: if you will, longtime baseball man, great baseball mind. But
- 14:37Speaker 2: there are thoughts Ken out there that he is kind
- 14:39Speaker 2: of toying with returning in twenty twenty six. What more
- 14:42Speaker 2: can you tell us?
- 14:43Speaker 1: He addressed that yesterday with reporters who cover the team,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and somewhat surprisingly, at least to me, he said, you know, what.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I'm not sure that I want to step down just yet.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I'm maybe hungry to finish this thing off and turn
- 14:58Speaker 1: around what was a dis pointing season this year and
- 15:01Speaker 1: not go out on this poor note. Bryan Sticker, if
- 15:05Speaker 1: he wants to return, I believe will be permitted to
- 15:08Speaker 1: return by the Atlanta Braves. It seems to me the
- 15:11Speaker 1: job is his as long as he wants it at least,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you know, in a reasonable fashion. But it's going to
- 15:19Speaker 1: be really interesting to see what he decides, what he
- 15:21Speaker 1: and his family decide on just where he is. He
- 15:24Speaker 1: seems to be healthy, even though he's an older manager,
- 15:26Speaker 1: of course, and his comments yesterday indicate to me that
- 15:31Speaker 1: he hasn't lost that fire. That if anything, the fire
- 15:35Speaker 1: was lit even higher this season because of how intensely
- 15:38Speaker 1: disappointing it has been. So they're gonna be good next year.
- 15:42Speaker 1: They're gonna have the pitching back, and they're gonna have
- 15:45Speaker 1: all of their position players and all the things that
- 15:47Speaker 1: went wrong, I would presume some of them at least
- 15:50Speaker 1: are going to go right, and they'll make some off
- 15:51Speaker 1: season moves as well. So I can see Snicker kind
- 15:55Speaker 1: of wanting to taste that again and I take another job.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think when you've been in the business as
- 16:00Speaker 2: long as he has, it's so difficult to stop. So
- 16:02Speaker 2: many folks have a difficult time making the transition out
- 16:05Speaker 2: of the game, and they just don't know what to
- 16:06Speaker 2: do with themselves. Ken, we would be remiss if we
- 16:09Speaker 2: didn't mention that today is the twenty fourth anniversary, if
- 16:12Speaker 2: you will, of the nine to eleven terrorist.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Attack in the United States.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Do you remember what you were doing on that day
- 16:19Speaker 2: twenty four years ago? And first of all, I can't
- 16:21Speaker 2: believe it's almost been a quarter a quarter of a century.
- 16:24Speaker 2: But what do you remember about that day in particular,
- 16:27Speaker 2: and how did it affect you?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Of course I remember, and I was riding an exercise
- 16:34Speaker 1: bike and watching television, and that's how I saw the
- 16:37Speaker 1: whole thing unfold. I'm a New York native, so obviously
- 16:41Speaker 1: it hurt, but it hurt for every American and it
- 16:44Speaker 1: was just a terrible event. I'll be wearing the nine
- 16:47Speaker 1: to eleven Museum bow tie tonight for Phillies Meths broadcast
- 16:50Speaker 1: from Philadelphia, and next year we're going to have for
- 16:54Speaker 1: the twenty fifth anniversary Yankees and Mets playing on nine
- 16:57Speaker 1: to eleven, which will be an incredibly special night. And
- 17:00Speaker 1: I also remember the first game back, the Piazza game,
- 17:03Speaker 1: when we put the home run against the Braves. I
- 17:04Speaker 1: covered that game. It was really emotional. The World Series
- 17:08Speaker 1: that year with the Yankees playing the Diamondbacks was really emotional.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It's a time when I never want to revisit again, obviously,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and there have been a lot of dark days in
- 17:17Speaker 1: the country's history, including just some recently, but we all
- 17:23Speaker 1: remember it, and we all just want to make sure
- 17:25Speaker 1: that something like that never happens again.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember I was getting ready for work. I
- 17:29Speaker 2: lived in Denver, Colorado at the time. This was way before,
- 17:32Speaker 2: well not way before, but it was before I got
- 17:33Speaker 2: into journalism. And I remember my building. I was in
- 17:36Speaker 2: the hospitality industry at the time, and our hotel was
- 17:39Speaker 2: next to what is the World Trade Center in Denver,
- 17:42Speaker 2: So obviously it's not the same as New York, but
- 17:43Speaker 2: it was the World Trade Center there in Colorado. And
- 17:46Speaker 2: just remembering it felt to me ken like the world
- 17:48Speaker 2: had stopped. It felt so uneasy and such a time
- 17:52Speaker 2: of just questions and insecurity and wondering what was next.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And I remember thinking, and our gas price is going
- 18:01Speaker 2: to go through. I mean I was thinking all kinds
- 18:03Speaker 2: of different things about that, and then the reflection of
- 18:06Speaker 2: all the people that were, you know, that perished in
- 18:09Speaker 2: that having to decide whether jumping out of a tower
- 18:12Speaker 2: was better than you know, burning alive in a tower.
- 18:15Speaker 2: And it's just that horrific act on our country. And
- 18:19Speaker 2: to your point, I hope it never it never happens again.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But to all of those that were affected on that
- 18:25Speaker 2: day twenty four years ago, our thoughts are still with you,
- 18:27Speaker 2: of course, our prayers for you and the ones that
- 18:29Speaker 2: you've lost. I mean, a lot of those folks ken
- 18:31Speaker 2: would have been getting married now or seeing their grandchildren
- 18:34Speaker 2: now or whatever, and it's it's difficult, it's difficult to swallow.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So again we wanted to pay respect to that. We
- 18:40Speaker 2: appreciate you guys taking a moment to listen. We're going
- 18:43Speaker 2: to be right back after a quick break for Dude
- 18:45Speaker 2: and Dork of the Week.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Time for your weekly Arena Club segment where we see
- 18:50Speaker 4: what AJ pulls from a slab pack and we go
- 18:56Speaker 4: pull a little emerald pack. This week, AJ looking for
- 18:59Speaker 4: something big.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Always, I'm always looking for the big thing. Next big Thing's.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Got big money, big money, Baby. We've got a Dave
- 19:07Speaker 4: Winfield card from nineteen seventy four, seventy four tops card
- 19:12Speaker 4: from this Emerald pack. Estimated value three hundred bucks. You
- 19:16Speaker 4: could sell it back for two seventy sold sold. I
- 19:20Speaker 4: feel like you are into more of the current players.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Would that be accurate?
- 19:25Speaker 1: You like legend?
- 19:25Speaker 3: In my showroom, I have a Robin you out, I
- 19:27Speaker 3: have a Griffy Rookie car.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Think that's true? So I mean I have some older
- 19:30Speaker 1: vintage your players. Bob Gibson, Oh yeah, you have Gibson,
- 19:33Speaker 1: So I know.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I disagree Scott, but Dave Winfield for that amount of
- 19:37Speaker 3: money back, I'm reselling it.
- 19:39Speaker 4: And if you want to get your own pack or
- 19:41Speaker 4: new card, you can get twenty percent off your first
- 19:44Speaker 4: slab pack or card purchase at arenaclub dot com. Slash
- 19:47Speaker 4: foul dude, dude, dude.
- 19:57Speaker 3: All right, time for due to the week, Ken, who
- 19:59Speaker 3: do you have? Who is your and out performer this week?
- 20:01Speaker 1: I'm going to go with Mookie Bets. And remember it
- 20:05Speaker 1: was about a month ago, Alana when Mooki basically said
- 20:08Speaker 1: my season's over, at least from a statistical standpoint, I
- 20:11Speaker 1: won't have my usual season, and I'm going to just
- 20:14Speaker 1: play for the team. Well, since he said that, he's
- 20:18Speaker 1: been basically the Mookie Bets of old and right. Over
- 20:21Speaker 1: the past thirty one games, he's hitting three thirty three
- 20:24Speaker 1: with the nine to thirty one ops really hot in
- 20:26Speaker 1: his last seven games for nineteen batting average, four homers,
- 20:30Speaker 1: eight extra base hits, fourteen RBIs. That's in the seven
- 20:33Speaker 1: game period. So MOOKI good to see you back.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Yeah, welcome back, Muke. We appreciate you.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Marcus lynd Bett's MLB, which is so funny that his
- 20:42Speaker 2: initials are MLB. All right, my dude of the week,
- 20:45Speaker 2: it's not baseball. I appreciate you guys. Letting me go
- 20:48Speaker 2: off on a limb here the Denver Broncos. I'm born
- 20:51Speaker 2: and raised in Colorado, Denver Broncos football fan my entire life.
- 20:54Speaker 2: It's the only thing that keeps my dysfunctional family together.
- 20:57Speaker 3: One of our goals is.
- 20:58Speaker 2: To make sure that we're engaging community mbers three sixty
- 21:00Speaker 2: five days a year in the area and around the stadium.
- 21:03Speaker 2: And what they're doing is they have a proposed new
- 21:05Speaker 2: stadium plan still in Denver, Colorado. But what I love
- 21:09Speaker 2: about this is it all is privately funded. This is
- 21:11Speaker 2: not tax payer dollars. And what they're trying to do
- 21:15Speaker 2: is have a new football stadium surrounded by restaurants and activities,
- 21:18Speaker 2: very much like what the Montforts have done in Loto
- 21:21Speaker 2: with Coursefield and that unbelievable McGregor Square area.
- 21:25Speaker 3: They've done a really good job.
- 21:26Speaker 2: I rip on the Rockies a lot, but the Montforts
- 21:28Speaker 2: have done an amazing job with that and that's what
- 21:31Speaker 2: the new ownership group of the Broncos is trying to do.
- 21:33Speaker 2: So they are my dudes of the week. Go Broncos
- 21:36Speaker 2: were one to oh, and I'm glad the Chiefs are
- 21:38Speaker 2: zero and one.
- 21:39Speaker 3: But that's either here nor there.
- 21:41Speaker 1: One second you say the words privately funded.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Yes, privately funded.
- 21:49Speaker 5: That's me among owners well, public funds. Ask the athletics.
- 21:56Speaker 5: I don't know what's happening, but the Broncos, if you're
- 21:58Speaker 5: not going to take their tax dollars, you're going to
- 22:00Speaker 5: build a brand new stadium. I would love it if
- 22:02Speaker 5: you named it, you know, Alana Rizzo Field at Mile
- 22:05Speaker 5: High or whatever it is.
- 22:06Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Okay, my dude of the week is
- 22:10Speaker 2: out there. Candida's time for Dork of the week.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Okay, as usual, we have a plethora of candidates, but
- 22:26Speaker 1: I'm not going to let the Dodgers off the hook
- 22:28Speaker 1: for what happened last Saturday night at Camden Yards. This
- 22:32Speaker 1: was one of the more memorable games of the season,
- 22:34Speaker 1: if not the most memorable, and it was just a
- 22:37Speaker 1: shocking outcome. Let's go back to the details. For eight
- 22:40Speaker 1: and two thirds innings, Yoshinoba Yamamoto had a no hitter
- 22:45Speaker 1: at that point. After eight and two thirds, with one
- 22:47Speaker 1: out to go, the Dodgers led three to nothing. They
- 22:50Speaker 1: had a ninety nine point five percent chance of winning
- 22:54Speaker 1: that game. That was their win probability, ninety nine point
- 22:57Speaker 1: five percent chance, and the other point five came in.
- 23:02Speaker 1: They blew that game and detailed it a little bit.
- 23:04Speaker 1: It was a comedy of errors in a certain respect.
- 23:08Speaker 1: And it was so appropriate that the Orioles made this
- 23:10Speaker 1: comeback on the night they celebrated now Ripkin's thirtieth anniversary
- 23:14Speaker 1: of breaking Lou Garrig's record. That was the shock of
- 23:17Speaker 1: shocks again, the game of the year for me and
- 23:21Speaker 1: the Dodgers for losing it, the Dorks of the week.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and so am I because I was sitting there
- 23:26Speaker 2: tweeting it like, oh my gosh, if you're not watching,
- 23:27Speaker 2: you should probably tune in.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Blah blah blah.
- 23:30Speaker 2: And then it was like Jackson Holiday, which is so
- 23:32Speaker 2: ironic too, Ken that he the Holiday family requested permission
- 23:36Speaker 2: from the Ripkin family for Jackson to wear number seven
- 23:39Speaker 2: and then he breaks up the no no Andy Pa
- 23:42Speaker 2: has I don't know what the heck he was doing
- 23:43Speaker 2: in the outfield. Then you have to pray that your
- 23:45Speaker 2: bullpend can get one flipping out, and they couldn't. I
- 23:48Speaker 2: almost went to bed after the no no was I
- 23:50Speaker 2: was like, all right, well, no, No's over, I'm going
- 23:52Speaker 2: to go to bed, and I stayed up like and
- 23:53Speaker 2: I shouldn't have because then I just got pissed. All right,
- 23:56Speaker 2: My my York of the week, besides myself, is Philly's
- 24:02Speaker 2: Karen Ken. I mean, I know I'm not really going
- 24:04Speaker 2: out on a limb here, but my goodness, woman, what
- 24:06Speaker 2: are you doing? And now, I mean, just first of all,
- 24:09Speaker 2: I don't think that this woman should have lost her
- 24:11Speaker 2: job and people should be stocking her.
- 24:13Speaker 3: I mean, that's just ridiculous.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Okay, be the bigger person, but the way that she
- 24:17Speaker 2: handled this situation, my goodness, you, Karen. You Phillies, Karen
- 24:22Speaker 2: are my dork of the week. And I tell you what, Ken,
- 24:25Speaker 2: she's getting served. Karma is a is not a good thing.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I tell you that.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yes, And she did get a five thousand dollars offer
- 24:32Speaker 1: for that ball if she autographed it and said I'm
- 24:34Speaker 1: sorry in the inscription. But of course she's not going
- 24:37Speaker 1: to do that because that would identify her. People wouldn't
- 24:40Speaker 1: know who she is. Now, I'm with you a lot.
- 24:42Speaker 1: At one point I want to make here, the social
- 24:44Speaker 1: media witch hunt takes place in a number of different
- 24:48Speaker 1: ways at a number of different times. It's ridiculous. The
- 24:50Speaker 1: woman did something wrong. Okay, we all have our bad moments,
- 24:53Speaker 1: maybe not publicize the way this one was. But I
- 24:57Speaker 1: don't care for that at all, and that needs to stop.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I agree, completely leave her alone. She did a bad thing,
- 25:02Speaker 2: but you don't need to harass her. Kim, tell us
- 25:04Speaker 2: a little bit more about the Native Nations baseball team
- 25:08Speaker 2: and the article that you recently wrote.
- 25:10Speaker 3: This is interesting stuff.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I wrote it a couple of days ago and actually
- 25:14Speaker 1: worked on it for nine months on and off. What
- 25:17Speaker 1: it is is an effort by the former Major league
- 25:19Speaker 1: pitcher DJ Carrasco to build a national program for Native
- 25:24Speaker 1: American players that doesn't exist right now, and they took
- 25:28Speaker 1: a very dramatic first step recently by having the first
- 25:32Speaker 1: Native American team compete in the Babe Ruth World Series
- 25:35Speaker 1: in Branson, Missouri. Their long term dream is to build
- 25:39Speaker 1: out an infrastructure where you have a national program from
- 25:43Speaker 1: childhood up through adulthood for Native American players and then
- 25:47Speaker 1: ultimately to get a team into the World Baseball Classic.
- 25:51Speaker 1: That's complicated, it's going to take time. It's not something
- 25:54Speaker 1: that can happen right away, but it's certainly an appropriate dream.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And Alta we talk this and you mentioned it to
- 26:01Speaker 1: me off the air. Baseball is always looking for talent. Well,
- 26:05Speaker 1: here is an untapped source of talent, the Native American community.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Now we have some Native American Major leaguers, but the
- 26:12Speaker 1: point of this program is to identify the players, maybe
- 26:15Speaker 1: on reservations, maybe in rural areas, who don't get the
- 26:18Speaker 1: opportunities that guys like Ryan Helsley did and John Gray
- 26:23Speaker 1: did and some other players because those guys went to
- 26:26Speaker 1: public high schools, they went to college in many cases,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and they're in a different category. What they want to
- 26:32Speaker 1: do is create opportunities for players who are not getting
- 26:36Speaker 1: those opportunities now. And it's a wonderful idea. It's an
- 26:40Speaker 1: incredible program that DJ Carrasco is trying to start here
- 26:43Speaker 1: and is starting, has started, and we'll see where it goes.
- 26:46Speaker 1: But that was the point of writing it, and I
- 26:49Speaker 1: hope people read it to see just what's going on
- 26:52Speaker 1: here because it's kind of a cool effort and an
- 26:55Speaker 1: effort that really anybody can everybody can get behind.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I love it.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I love it.
- 26:59Speaker 2: What was the most interesting thing that you've found out
- 27:01Speaker 2: when you were spending nine over the course of nine
- 27:03Speaker 2: months to put this together, just that this.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Was happening really and that things were progressing, and that
- 27:10Speaker 1: DJ Carrasco, who is Native American but in a very
- 27:14Speaker 1: small way, but he's not a guy who is part
- 27:19Speaker 1: of a tribe really or anything like that. He's mostly
- 27:22Speaker 1: Mexican American. That's his greatest lineage, and this is his passion.
- 27:27Speaker 1: And there's a guy named Ryan Flynn who created the
- 27:30Speaker 1: baseball program, the national program in New Zealand, and they're
- 27:33Speaker 1: kind of combining on this, and these guys are incredibly
- 27:37Speaker 1: passionate about what they're doing. And they want to make
- 27:41Speaker 1: this as big as possible, so we will see what happens.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Dusty Baker had an interesting quote and Jacob Elsbury, Jacoby Elsbur,
- 27:49Speaker 1: I'm sorry, cannot be the last great Native American player.
- 27:52Speaker 1: There have to be some players there. I know they are.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Dusty has contributed time and money to the Native Nations effort,
- 28:00Speaker 1: and others are getting behind it as well. And again
- 28:03Speaker 1: we'll see where it goes. Alana. But it's a cool
- 28:06Speaker 1: thing that DJ Carrasco is trying to do.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I agree with you, and please if you take the
- 28:10Speaker 2: time to read it, that would be great. Learn more
- 28:12Speaker 2: about the Native Nations article. We want to say goodbye,
- 28:15Speaker 2: thank you guys for being here, thank you for watching
- 28:17Speaker 2: and listening. Foul Territory is next. Aj Pierzinski, Eric Kratz,
- 28:20Speaker 2: and Scott Brown welcome Will Salmon, Annisabo and Matt Barnes
- 28:24Speaker 2: to this show. We appreciate you guys. Ken is back
- 28:26Speaker 2: with a fresh new episode on Monday.
- 28:28Speaker 3: See you later.
