- 0:11Hell yeah, brother.
- 0:13Oh, this is nice.
- 0:14I wanna thank you.
- 0:15You're doing this, man.
- 0:15Thank you.
- 0:16This is awesome to sit down.
- 0:17Welcome into a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:20I'm your host Bubba Starts, and with me today is my brother Ryan, better known as DJ Julio.
- 0:25Julio, welcome to the show, brother.
- 0:27Thank you.
- 0:27Welcome to my house.
- 0:28Yeah.
- 0:28This is great.
- 0:29We don't get to do a lot of on-site, you know, shoots like this.
- 0:33So, when we got the opportunity, I'm glad that you jumped at it and and let us come in here.
- 0:37If you hear some meows in the background, we got some attention seeking cats.
- 0:41It's all good.
- 0:41I got one at home too.
- 0:42She makes appearances on the show already.
- 0:44So Nice.
- 0:45This is as comfortable as I get doing these interviews,
- 0:48man.
- 0:49And it needs to be
- 0:50that way sometimes.
- 0:51No.
- 0:52And I think it should be.
- 0:53Yeah.
- 0:53You know, what
- 0:53I what I tell a lot of people when they come on the show is, like, you know, just nobody's
- 0:57listening.
- 0:57Right?
- 0:57Nobody's not doing like, don't worry about all the cameras or the microphones or or what's
- 1:01what's going on around you.
- 1:03It's about the conversation, man.
- 1:04100%.
- 1:05And and we have such great ones.
- 1:06And probably some of the best ones we've had will never make it to tape anywhere.
- 1:10But, obviously, ten years you've been at the Surgess Buffalo Chip now.
- 1:15It was an incredible time, you know, a month and a half ago now.
- 1:19It's crazy that it's been that long
- 1:20It is.
- 1:21Since we left now.
- 1:23The memories are still fresh.
- 1:25You know, it's been for me, you know, I've been there.
- 1:29Right?
- 1:30I've been to the Chip.
- 1:30I've done a day.
- 1:31I've been to a concert and but I've never spent the whole week there.
- 1:36Right?
- 1:36And I didn't stay on the property, but I was there plenty when all the action was happening.
- 1:41Got to meet some incredible people, but a decade you've been there now running club chip,
- 1:45and obviously, you were a patron before that.
- 1:47Oh, yeah.
- 1:48Ten years of it.
- 1:49What's kind of the what's in of just a few words, what is the buffalo chip for all of
- 1:57those listening that have never been there and never experienced it?
- 2:00Like, at its essence, what is the Buffalo Chip?
- 2:04Home.
- 2:05For me, it's home.
- 2:07For for for people coming and visiting, it's a it's a reunion.
- 2:10It's friends and family that have seen each other from across the world.
- 2:15We have friends that fly in from New Zealand and come in from Alaska, out from Arizona, over
- 2:20from Montana.
- 2:21And it's it's nine days that we get to just be together like a family reunion, much like a
- 2:31family reunion.
- 2:32That's the best way to explain it.
- 2:34And I think that gets lost, especially because you're bringing in these large name bands.
- 2:38You you know, this year, Marilyn Manson was there.
- 2:41What a huge act that was.
- 2:43Five finger death punch put on an awesome show.
- 2:45Jason Aldine for our country fans.
- 2:49They just announced their first headliner for the twenty twenty six rally, and it was Lainey
- 2:54freaking Wilson.
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:55That's gonna be huge.
- 2:56Huge.
- 2:57Huge, man.
- 2:58So so happy that they did that.
- 3:00You know, there's a lot of bands I'd love to see.
- 3:02A lot of bands I'd love to see, but she's got such momentum right now.
- 3:06Right.
- 3:07You know?
- 3:07And it's it's really gonna put up you know, bring on you know, we're gonna get a lot of
- 3:12people there.
- 3:13Do you have yeah.
- 3:14A lot.
- 3:14I mean, it It's gonna be Kid Rock or bigger.
- 3:17I I think it might be even bigger because Kid Rock can be such a polarizing figure for a lot
- 3:21of other people, and maybe they just don't like his music.
- 3:24I don't know a single soul around that doesn't love Lainie Wilson.
- 3:27No.
- 3:28Me neither.
- 3:28Me neither.
- 3:29And and to talk about Bobby, Kid Rock, he puts on, you know, one of the best performances.
- 3:36Now we all know his music.
- 3:38We've seen his face for a hundred years, it feels like.
- 3:41But his his stage presence, the shows that he and then a lot of bands are.
- 3:46But I think Lenny's gonna outdo that.
- 3:47I think she's gonna she's gonna trump that.
- 3:49Well, and like you said, it's the momentum factor where, you know, kid rock twenty years
- 3:54ago on that rise, you know, coming out is different.
- 3:57Now he's kinda one of the OGs.
- 3:58Mhmm.
- 3:58Shout out to them.
- 3:59They had us for his his big tour, Rock the Country this year.
- 4:03They were out in Sioux Falls, so we got to see him, and the show was incredible.
- 4:06The pirate techniques, the screens, the video, man, like, is just unreal.
- 4:11I mean, as far as being a showman, he's made a career out of that and being outlandish, and
- 4:16and also by not giving a shit what anybody else thought about him.
- 4:19Right.
- 4:20You know, the one one of the things that impresses me most about him is he does that
- 4:23sober.
- 4:25He doesn't drink.
- 4:26He doesn't smoke weed.
- 4:27He doesn't do anything before his performance.
- 4:29He's completely sober on that stage, giving us 100% himself.
- 4:33Right.
- 4:33And I think that's important for young performers to know as well that if you're, you
- 4:38know, and they probably got a bad rep during the eighties.
- 4:42Right?
- 4:42The eighties and those hair metal bands and and guys were just getting totally, you know, shit
- 4:46faced before they jumped on and delivered their art.
- 4:49That that's not what it's about, man.
- 4:50You're out there to do a freaking job.
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:52Right?
- 4:53And I I noticed that early on in my career was like, can't be my best if I'm drinking in a
- 4:59purely physical manner.
- 5:00Yeah.
- 5:00I can't sing for three hours a night if I'm putting down booze and dehydrating my vocal
- 5:05cords and all of those things And it gets scratchy.
- 5:07In the press.
- 5:08Oh, yeah, man.
- 5:09And then you're wrecking yourself.
- 5:10And if you're trying to do that back to back nights or back to back to back to back to back,
- 5:13you know Exactly.
- 5:14Man, you can't party.
- 5:15So the only way to do it really is to do it, you know, at least when you're performing, to
- 5:19do it sober, to be putting down the water because you gotta be wanna give a 100% of
- 5:24yourself, a thousand percent of yourself into that one hour that you have with these people
- 5:29or, you know, maybe a two hour show.
- 5:31Right.
- 5:31And if you're dulling your shine as an artist in that moment, you're kinda losing out on a
- 5:37little bit of and you're doing yourself a disservice by doing that.
- 5:40Right.
- 5:41Right.
- 5:41No.
- 5:41And I'm not I'm not here to promote any kind of drug use while you're while you're playing.
- 5:48I don't I don't drink much.
- 5:50I don't I I I stay I stay semi sober if if you if you will.
- 5:55Semi sober.
- 5:56Yeah.
- 5:56I think Billy Striggs called it California sober.
- 5:59Right?
- 5:59Yes.
- 5:59100%.
- 6:00That's that that'd be the better better explanation.
- 6:02Yeah.
- 6:03And and I want people to to get to know you a little bit too, man.
- 6:08So, you know, you don't have to go all the way back to the beginning, but I know your
- 6:11upbringing has informed a lot of who you are as a man now, how you look at people, and how you
- 6:16treat people.
- 6:17Give us a little bit of the backstory, you know, DJ Julio before he was DJ Julio.
- 6:23That's a little shit.
- 6:27You know, my I grew up from broken home.
- 6:30Didn't have a great first father.
- 6:33My second father was great.
- 6:34He adopted me when I was five and brought me into music.
- 6:40He was in Wakefield, which you said you knew a little bit about Wakefield.
- 6:44South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, man.
- 6:46South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.
- 6:48I might be there one day.
- 6:49We'll see.
- 6:50Yeah.
- 6:50We're working on it, brother.
- 6:51We're working on it.
- 6:52But so I got to I got to experience music behind the scenes a long long time ago.
- 6:58I was five, six, seven years old, and that that's where it started for me is the grit and
- 7:07grime behind the scenes.
- 7:09That that's where it was for me.
- 7:10But I grew up I grew up in Sioux Falls.
- 7:13I was born in Leeds, South Dakota, not not far from where I live now.
- 7:18Moved over to Rapid City, bought a home in Blackhawk.
- 7:22I own a plumbing company.
- 7:24You know, I grew up.
- 7:26You can almost see the water towers from where we're sitting.
- 7:29Right over there in those trees, when I when we moved from Sioux Falls, we moved to Rapid.
- 7:34Second grade, probably third.
- 7:37We spent on Norwood Elementary, so I grew up on the North Side for a little while here in
- 7:42Rapid.
- 7:43Went over to the West Side, not to Blackhawk when I was 12, and this is where I've been
- 7:47pretty much since.
- 7:48Yeah.
- 7:49Just and you're a staple of a name out here in the Black Hills I mean, everybody knows you.
- 7:55And everybody knows you because your personality has put you out there.
- 7:58I I don't know a single person that would have a bad thing to say about you.
- 8:02You've always given so much of yourself to putting on other artists, to helping other
- 8:06people to get their art out there, and to get into shows, and you know, performing, yes, is
- 8:11one thing.
- 8:12But I feel like you you take your role as, you know, kind of a papa bear of the scene now.
- 8:17You take that very seriously.
- 8:19I I wish I took it more seriously sooner.
- 8:23We have a lot
- 8:24of great artists in the South Dakota area.
- 8:26West West River, for sure.
- 8:28East River's been blooming for years.
- 8:31You know, with the us over here are starting to show their faces, and I try to be.
- 8:36You know, we we get busy in life and forget our meaning sometimes.
- 8:40And as of recent, I've come back to that.
- 8:43I want others to shine.
- 8:45I want others to do their do their best, and I'm a hold you accountable.
- 8:49You know?
- 8:49If you want this and you say you want it and then you half ass it, make them mess with
- 8:55you.
- 8:55Right.
- 8:56I'm not gonna do it.
- 8:56And I think that's what people have been seeing from the seed projects the last year is that,
- 9:00man, we're an open door.
- 9:01But if you're not here to put in the work and you're not here to carry the speakers, you
- 9:06know, so to speak in Yeah.
- 9:07In any fashion that it might be that like, man, we ain't got time for you.
- 9:10If you're not putting in all of yourself and you're just here to capitalize off the
- 9:14platforms that we've built, well, there ain't no room for you here, man.
- 9:17We only got people we only got room for people that are gonna help us roll the boat.
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:21And I gotta see you hear you, you know, more than more than twice a year.
- 9:27You know?
- 9:28That's how I know you're you're invested.
- 9:30If I hear you once a month, I know you're invested into whatever we're doing.
- 9:34If it's a show that I'm gonna be a part of, I need to hear back from you.
- 9:37If I'm if it's a show I'm putting on, I need to hear from you if you're gonna be a part of it,
- 9:40and if I don't hear from you.
- 9:42Yeah.
- 9:42No hard no hard no hard feelings.
- 9:45I'm a slap your hand in public, and we're gonna be friends.
- 9:47That's that's just what we're gonna do, but we just won't work together in music because
- 9:52that's not a good fit.
- 9:53It's killing killing the friendship in the process.
- 9:55Right.
- 9:56Right.
- 9:56Well, and it you know, they always say that it's hard to hard to work with your friends.
- 10:00I I think I, you know, I disagree with that.
- 10:02It it kinda depends on who your friends are.
- 10:04Yes.
- 10:05I guess.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06You know, there's nobody that I would rather work with growing these things than my friends.
- 10:11Like, to me, that's what it's all about.
- 10:13100%.
- 10:14100%.
- 10:15I used to have a studio.
- 10:16Well, you guys can't see it.
- 10:18No.
- 10:18I wouldn't we wouldn't really call it a studio.
- 10:20But I I had my gear set up right over here for years.
- 10:24People could come and play.
- 10:25You know, I'm always here to play.
- 10:27I'm always here doing that.
- 10:29And as of the last year, I've well, since Rally, I put my stuff in my my trailers, and
- 10:35that's where it's at.
- 10:37Gonna sit back, and I'm gonna enjoy this winter, and then it's then it's hard pressing
- 10:41come the first of the year.
- 10:43Yeah.
- 10:44Yep.
- 10:44Well and and we know you'll be back at the Buffalo Chip for the twenty twenty six rally
- 10:49celebrating eleven years.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:53And I know it never feels like you've made it.
- 10:56I I and and that you don't take any of it for granted.
- 10:58I mean, you're texting them this week and being like, hey.
- 11:01Am I invited back next year?
- 11:02And, honestly, Damien's like, what
- 11:04the hell are you talking about?
- 11:05Right.
- 11:05Right.
- 11:06And and to be honest, I don't I I text very very seldom.
- 11:09I'll call you.
- 11:10Right.
- 11:11I've I've learned that about you over the course of the last few months.
- 11:15If you're important to me and it's important that we need to talk, I'm a call you.
- 11:18You know?
- 11:19And I called Damon, and, yeah, he said, you know we're just busy.
- 11:23Don't worry about life.
- 11:25Yeah.
- 11:25You know?
- 11:25And then they put a post up, which is an awesome post, and I love seeing that from them.
- 11:29And that's that's the other that's the other thing that I was gonna tell you.
- 11:33In a in a few short words, why the buffalo chip?
- 11:37When I say it's a family reunion, it's not separate families.
- 11:42You become almost ingrained.
- 11:47It's like it's it's 100% the words home the the words home.
- 11:53You're a part of it.
- 11:54They make you feel a part of it.
- 11:55The the Woodruffs, you know, behind the scenes, we got Mary, who I work directly with.
- 12:03There's the Chris, there's so many great people out there.
- 12:07The behind the stage people, they they just all make well, for me, they made me feel home.
- 12:14Right.
- 12:14And they made me feel at home with them this year.
- 12:17I was just on, you know, the content creator, which there were several 100 of us at the end
- 12:21of the day.
- 12:21You know?
- 12:21I went down to the creator party that they had at Camp 0.
- 12:24And for me, I knew a lot of people are gonna get caught up in the stuff that you kinda know
- 12:29about.
- 12:29Right?
- 12:29Obviously, the you know, you you have Burnout Alley.
- 12:32You have Bikini Beach, and you have the big concerts, right, and the main auditorium, you
- 12:38know, the amphitheater area.
- 12:39I really wanted to shine a light this year if I was gonna be there on the kind of dark corners
- 12:43of it.
- 12:44So I spent some time down at Cam 0, spent some time at the, you know, the sports complex down
- 12:48there, the Motor Sports Complex.
- 12:50Freaking awesome, man.
- 12:51Giant yeah.
- 12:52This six mile track that they're ripping the side by sides around the whole time, but not
- 12:57necessarily a lot of spectators just because it's hard to promote everything that you're
- 13:01doing when you're literally doing everything.
- 13:04All day long.
- 13:04Yeah.
- 13:05It's crazy.
- 13:06So I got to spend some time there for the Ultra four racing, and they threw me a freaking
- 13:11security shirt.
- 13:12They're like, get in the fucking side by side, man.
- 13:14We're cruising up to the top of the hill, take some shots, and do that.
- 13:17So we we we just had a ton of footage, man.
- 13:19I probably had a terabyte of footage that I freaking shot this this year and to capture all
- 13:24the moments, to capture all the things that people don't necessarily see because it is so
- 13:28overwhelming.
- 13:29Yeah.
- 13:29Right?
- 13:29It can be so huge and not everybody spends ever even if you stay at the campground, you're not
- 13:35in the amphitheater every night.
- 13:36Because you're probably gonna party too hard one night, and you'll be like, no no no.
- 13:39I gotta I gotta sleep tonight.
- 13:40Right?
- 13:41You're I'm gonna find one or two where I might get six hours of sleep instead of four.
- 13:45Yeah.
- 13:46Yeah.
- 13:46No.
- 13:46And and this year, it was being there every day, every you know, for the rally as a as a
- 13:52spectator, it is it is overwhelming.
- 13:55We would before before I got the contract, 10 rallies ago, so it was the seventy fifth, we
- 14:06would we would get up.
- 14:07We'd have breakfast, you know, with everybody, maybe go to the pond for a little bit.
- 14:12Some of us hop on bikes, go go rip the hills.
- 14:17And now being being the inside part of it, it's still the same.
- 14:24Nothing's changed.
- 14:25Except for now, when it's time to party, I get to be that party.
- 14:30Right.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:30I get to be at the big engine bar the big engine bar cheering cheering my other DJs on
- 14:36VIP Rob and whoever else might be with there with him.
- 14:40Oh, yeah.
- 14:40Big shout out to Rob.
- 14:42We're using his cameras to shoot this today.
- 14:44So, Rob, I appreciate you, brother.
- 14:46And I I can't can't thank you enough for for letting us use your equipment to to really give
- 14:51this interview the time that it deserves.
- 14:54I mean, I I do most of my stuff over the computer on Zoom or, you know, now we use a app
- 14:59called StreamYard that's allowed us to really increase our production value.
- 15:03We were live before recording this.
- 15:05I was at the Cinch playoffs Governors Cup on the main concourse, and it's the same thing.
- 15:10Just like you said, like, you are a part of the party.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:12And to be invited into these large scale events was just said, man, I was a shit kid too.
- 15:18You know?
- 15:18Like, to see us all where we've come and to be not just invited, but respected.
- 15:24And I think that's what I've really come to appreciate.
- 15:28As I get a little bit older, I'll be 40 in, you know, a few months and and accepting the role
- 15:32that I have as an elder statesman of the scene, not just our brand, but of everyone around
- 15:38here.
- 15:39A lot of people come to me for advice.
- 15:40A lot of these younger artists and even ones that have been around for a while.
- 15:44Hey, Bubba.
- 15:45What do you think about this?
- 15:46Or or you know, who who can I talk to in this area?
- 15:49Like, are a trusted source of information.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:52And I'm I'm so happy that I found like this.
- 15:55Right?
- 15:56This outlet to get all of it out there without having to take a 100 calls a day.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:00You know?
- 16:01That would be exhausting.
- 16:03No.
- 16:03And you do a great job.
- 16:04Yeah.
- 16:04I've been following you for years, and just now starting to be a part of it is is you do a lot.
- 16:12You're doing a doing a good job, so so pay yourself for that.
- 16:15Go Thank you.
- 16:16Your team.
- 16:16I hear you I hear you got an amazing team.
- 16:18Yeah.
- 16:18And we do.
- 16:19A lot of people behind the behind the scene, right Yeah.
- 16:23That are doing it and, you know, producers that have come on that I I didn't know most of these
- 16:27people six months ago.
- 16:28Right.
- 16:29But they've come in and have proved themselves worthy.
- 16:32They want to be here.
- 16:33Right?
- 16:34And that's kind of what we talk about.
- 16:35You know, I have a lot of friends that and I hope you guys are watching the show.
- 16:38And if you are, get a hold of me, man.
- 16:40Come on and do this with it.
- 16:41Like, this
- 16:41is they we're just having fun.
- 16:42Two dudes on a couch,
- 16:44you know.
- 16:44Right.
- 16:44Exactly.
- 16:45Talking.
- 16:45That's how it started one time, wouldn't it?
- 16:47Two dudes on the couch?
- 16:48Pretty much.
- 16:48Yeah.
- 16:49Wasn't there something with my podcast called that?
- 16:51Yep.
- 16:51There probably was.
- 16:52I'm gonna owe somebody some money for this one if it gets it gets a lot of views.
- 16:55They should have cost money because we just brought them attention.
- 16:58Right.
- 16:58There you go.
- 16:59I gotta start turning that narrative around.
- 17:00This isn't two dudes on a couch.
- 17:02We are two dudes on a Man,
- 17:07what what is it that keeps you going, Julio?
- 17:10I I mean, it's it's not the money.
- 17:12I mean, it is.
- 17:13We we get paid for what we do.
- 17:14I I get paid to perform and to show up, but it's never been about that to me.
- 17:19What is it for you that keeps you pushing and setting up shows?
- 17:23And and obviously, the rally is an easy one to get fired
- 17:25up for.
- 17:26Yeah.
- 17:26Right?
- 17:26It's easy to come out and to know that you're gonna be performing for thousands of people
- 17:30over the course of ten days, but to keep doing shows and setting up smaller things, and I know
- 17:36you had a pretty regular gig downtown in Rapid City for years.
- 17:39I don't know if you're still doing that, but That that unfortunately, we
- 17:45we we paid the price due to somebody else's bad day.
- 17:49We lost a good friend down there to violence.
- 17:53And shortly after, we went Loki.
- 17:58That's one of the cats.
- 18:00Yeah.
- 18:01You could come here too.
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:03You wanna be on the show, Loki?
- 18:05No.
- 18:05So that was a friend of yours.
- 18:06Yeah.
- 18:07I remember hearing about it.
- 18:08I I've been out of the Rapid City area for a while, but, you know, definitely something like
- 18:12that shakes up a community, and not just the city of Rapid City, but especially you and your
- 18:17crew.
- 18:17Yeah.
- 18:18And it it
- 18:19it was hard on the bar, and it wasn't it wasn't so much hard on the bar because of anything
- 18:24financial.
- 18:25It was hard on the bar because this young man was a good friend of ours, everybody at the
- 18:30bar.
- 18:32And just just the phone calls that the bar received afterwards, and it it it became
- 18:39evident in order to keep our staff safe and and the crowd safe that we were just we were gonna
- 18:46shut it down.
- 18:48And so that bar has been shut down since June '22.
- 18:58One of the twenty one or twenty two, we shut the bar down.
- 19:01And it's still empty.
- 19:02The the place is still empty.
- 19:03Nobody's doing anything with it.
- 19:04And and as far as live DJs, unless unless I'm creating a show, there's no weekend, you know,
- 19:13spot besides AB's in Rapid City that that a guy could, you know, bring that kind of a club
- 19:18scene to rap it again.
- 19:21I hope it I hope it changes because going downtown and listening to a DJ that that plays
- 19:27and mind you, I'd go down early just to listen to the other DJs.
- 19:31I'd go I'd walk down to the 445 and watch the live bands for a little bit and head over to
- 19:36Ignite or Cole, which is now Press Start, which, you know, they have music.
- 19:40I'm not sure if they're using DJs now or not, but they don't have much of a dance floor
- 19:44because of all the games.
- 19:45Right.
- 19:45It's a fun place to fun fun place to go.
- 19:47Don't get me wrong.
- 19:48No.
- 19:48And it's kinda sad that that corner just kinda isn't the spot anymore.
- 19:54Right?
- 19:54Because for so long, I mean, I remember when it was Dublin Square, and that's where we
- 19:57performed at.
- 19:58And before that, it was what was it called?
- 20:00The Arena.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02It's had many names that corner, but it was always the spot.
- 20:05And, you know, I know that they tried there with Cole, and Cole was great.
- 20:09As far as what I saw, you know, a little more upscale.
- 20:11Shout out to our guys, you know, DJ Stitch and and Oakley who ran that place for years.
- 20:17Yeah.
- 20:17Oakley.
- 20:17Always bringing that, you know, and it's been in the top 40 stuff.
- 20:20Right?
- 20:20They were what they were.
- 20:22Their crowd was who their crowd was going to be.
- 20:24Right?
- 20:24But, you know, you go across town and Bud Ugly's for years.
- 20:27Right?
- 20:28Was I had that spot too.
- 20:29Was the spot, man, for if you wanted, you know, real DJs.
- 20:33Shout out to Greg Cook, GOAT Boy, Full Throttle.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37Well and, man, what what they've built over there, over the last several years since they
- 20:42moved, you know, even farther out of town to that piece of property just north of the just
- 20:47north of Barabute there, man.
- 20:49Like, incredible.
- 20:50And the new stage and VIP areas that they built at full throttle now.
- 20:54I mean, obviously, we love the chip, but we got love for all these people that are coming out
- 20:58and bringing the party, man.
- 20:59Yeah.
- 21:00No.
- 21:00I you know, Mike Ballard and all of those guys over there, they're great people, you know, to
- 21:04me.
- 21:05I they may not be great people to other people, but to me, they've they've always treated me
- 21:08with respect.
- 21:09So nothing but love for them out there.
- 21:11Yeah.
- 21:12Home, I'm sorry.
- 21:12I'm by I'm I'm partial.
- 21:14Right.
- 21:14It's Buffalo Chip.
- 21:15So Right.
- 21:16And that's not
- 21:16to say that, like, I'm not gonna come out and check out your place.
- 21:19Right?
- 21:19And and me, I'm out there during the day Yeah.
- 21:21But I'm not coming back for some of the concerts at night most of the time.
- 21:24I was a little disappointed.
- 21:26I didn't go out for Hank Junior.
- 21:28Mhmm.
- 21:28I wanted to, but we have prior engagements.
- 21:30You know, for me, so much of what I'm doing now is to support operation combating veteran
- 21:34suicide.
- 21:35Right.
- 21:35Which is great.
- 21:36Being being the marketing director for them, and that's actually I I stayed with Charlotte
- 21:39and Casey last night because they had a bet going on at Kathmandu this weekend that I was
- 21:43supposed to be a part of.
- 21:45But, you know, two weeks ago, I got the the email from the Cinch playoffs that are like,
- 21:49hey.
- 21:49We'd love to have you on the concourse again, and we saw what you did last year.
- 21:53We thought it was great.
- 21:54You're not gonna turn that invitation down, man.
- 21:55Right.
- 21:56We're talking we were in front of, know, 15,000 rodeo fans this weekend.
- 22:00You don't get that visibility, often No.
- 22:03Or some people at all, and the chance to just stand on the concourse and to pass out flyers
- 22:07for what we do, but also the causes that we're supporting.
- 22:11It's like, that's our superpower.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:13Right?
- 22:13I'm able to turn all of that door to door marketing, you know, selling magazines back in
- 22:17the day Right.
- 22:18Into a real valuable, you know, skill right out there.
- 22:23Thousands of people walking by and just running that script, man.
- 22:25Support our nonprofit.
- 22:26Support our, you know, support operation better.
- 22:28It's support veterans.
- 22:29They were like, by the end of the night, it was just support veterans.
- 22:31Take this.
- 22:32This is how you're gonna help save a life today.
- 22:33Right?
- 22:33Donate a little bit of money.
- 22:35Check out what we're doing.
- 22:36Share that with somebody else and come and be a part of it.
- 22:38And that's kind of the point we're at now is that bringing in more organizations that are
- 22:43already doing things like, look, we just wanna be a a part of what you're already doing and
- 22:47supporting you in those causes.
- 22:49You know, the big dream is to build some housing units to really help these, you know,
- 22:55young men and and women mostly that are that are coming through struggling with, you know,
- 22:59suicidal thoughts and That's you hit something
- 23:04there before we lose it.
- 23:05Want Shopko, which is now Napa, was empty for several years.
- 23:10Why doesn't the city buy it?
- 23:13Why don't they use our tax dollars to put put a housing development to get, you know, a whole
- 23:17ass therapy session in there?
- 23:20Right.
- 23:20You come in this door, you get checked in, you get sober if you need to, you get education if
- 23:25you need to as far as finding jobs, how to find a job, how to do this, what what it looks like
- 23:29trying to buy a house, what it looks like trying to rent a house.
- 23:31Do you know how to do plumbing?
- 23:32What what we got all of these people in these big ass buildings that sit dormant for nothing.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:38Well, and
- 23:38that's why organizations like ours have to do what we want to do.
- 23:42Because I I feel like what happens and and I don't know that it's the root cause.
- 23:48Obviously, you're dealing with people that have seen some stuff that they're never gonna get
- 23:52out of their heads.
- 23:52Right?
- 23:52You're gonna deal with a lot of the PTSD.
- 23:55But those thoughts and those memories only come back when you're idle.
- 23:59Right?
- 23:59Idle hands are the devil's playground.
- 24:01Right.
- 24:01And if and I think what happens is that people get out of the military and you've been
- 24:06surrounded by a community.
- 24:07You've been around your people this whole time.
- 24:09You've lived on base or close to base and you've been around that.
- 24:12And then as soon as you're not active duty anymore and you're kind of thrown back out into
- 24:16the world, you don't necessarily fit in with everybody.
- 24:19You're gonna have a darker sense of humor than most regular people.
- 24:23Right.
- 24:23Right?
- 24:23I mean You've done a job that god bless you for doing it, but you had to do some horrible
- 24:30things in order to get the job done, and god bless you for doing it.
- 24:33That's I mean, that's what they need to know deep, deep down.
- 24:37Right.
- 24:37It was a job.
- 24:38It was hard.
- 24:39We all got hard shit.
- 24:40We deal with in our jobs.
- 24:43That I bless you for it.
- 24:45God bless you for it.
- 24:46Well, and how do we build communities for veterans that that is also including all of
- 24:53those things.
- 24:54Right?
- 24:54Not just building a housing unit for people to come and sleep.
- 24:56No.
- 24:57No.
- 24:57No.
- 24:57All the programs, all the get togethers, and having, you know, a lot of community built into
- 25:02the idea from the ground up.
- 25:06Right?
- 25:06Like all of that is built in.
- 25:07What I wanna do is I wanna build podcast studios in all of them.
- 25:10Get these guys and gals talking.
- 25:12Right?
- 25:12Get these veterans sharing their stories so people can see into those lives and you don't
- 25:16have to share all the gory details.
- 25:18Right?
- 25:18But at the end of the day, it becomes an archive for yourself and for the public to go,
- 25:25man, I I went through something like that.
- 25:28Right?
- 25:28And I think that's the important thing to drive through is like you're you sharing your story
- 25:33isn't for everyone.
- 25:34It's for that one person whose life it's going to change.
- 25:38Right?
- 25:38And that's kind of where I've seen a huge growth.
- 25:41I I say on my podcast, if I have the conversation, it changes one life and that life
- 25:44is mine Mhmm.
- 25:45Then it was a win.
- 25:46Win.
- 25:46And and no doubt, it's always been my life and the other person on the podcast.
- 25:51And then who knows what happens when it gets out there in the world?
- 25:53We have no control over that.
- 25:54No.
- 25:54No.
- 25:55That's a ripple.
- 25:55I mean, everything's
- 25:56a ripple.
- 25:57And that's speaking to who I was and who I am is is where I'm at today.
- 26:03How I got here today was nothing more than a ripple.
- 26:05Something happened in my life that pushed me this direction, and I had choice.
- 26:10I can live darker.
- 26:11I can live light.
- 26:11How am I gonna live light?
- 26:13I'm a be friendly to everybody.
- 26:14I don't care if I dislike you, hate you, love you to death.
- 26:18When I see you, I'm gonna treat you with respect because why not?
- 26:21You know, and now it works out.
- 26:25I get all the respect and the love in the world from the people at the Buffalo Chip.
- 26:29I go around my community here in Blackhawk.
- 26:31People know who I am.
- 26:32They shake my hand.
- 26:33They wanna they wanna say good day.
- 26:36Ten, fifteen years ago, it would have been heads down, and that guy's a dickhead.
- 26:41But we we live and learn.
- 26:44Yeah.
- 26:44And I think that's something that both of us have have really grown over the last ten,
- 26:50fifteen years of you know, I because early on, it's hard to be.
- 26:54It's about me.
- 26:55It's about what I'm doing.
- 26:56And over time, it's probably just part of getting older and having those experiences and
- 27:02growing as a man.
- 27:03Right.
- 27:03Right?
- 27:04To realize that having kids and raising kids probably affected me more than anything,
- 27:08honestly.
- 27:09You know, I I I went on the wrong, man.
- 27:12When I when I caught my charges and show, was like, fuck.
- 27:14I'm not going to prison.
- 27:15I wasn't thinking about my kids at all.
- 27:16I was thinking about me.
- 27:17Mhmm.
- 27:17Right?
- 27:17And then my son Mick was born down in Mexico.
- 27:20My daughter was conceived down there, and it was finally taking a hard look in the mirror
- 27:24and going, look, they didn't ask for this life.
- 27:26Right.
- 27:26And if you're gonna bitch and moan about the life that somebody else gave you, you know,
- 27:31without going too deep into my backstory on this episode, listeners of the show, you all
- 27:35know how to find it.
- 27:35You all probably know the story already, but it it was hard for me to be okay.
- 27:40Well, you're gonna do the same fuck up shit to your kids that that your dad did to you.
- 27:44Yeah.
- 27:44Right?
- 27:44And you're gonna give them all the same you're gonna give them all the same issues that you
- 27:48have.
- 27:49Like, do you stop that?
- 27:50And it started with personal accountability.
- 27:52Yep.
- 27:52It said, you made those choices.
- 27:54You're gonna go back and bite the bullet.
- 27:56You're gonna do your time, and and you're gonna come out a better man for it.
- 27:59And it was at that point that I started I almost just started demanding more respect for
- 28:04myself because I was like, look, you can frown upon the decisions that I made, but I I owned
- 28:09it.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10Right?
- 28:10I am who I am Yep.
- 28:11Because of owning it, not because of the things that I did, because I stood up and took
- 28:15accountability Right.
- 28:16Said, you know what?
- 28:17I'm gonna satisfy that to society.
- 28:19Right?
- 28:19I'm gonna do my time.
- 28:20I'm gonna get out regardless of how laws have changed in the last, you know.
- 28:24I mean, as soon as I got out pretty much the a few years later, the laws changed and now
- 28:28things I was doing would have never landed me in prison for two years.
- 28:31Right.
- 28:31But, you know, I I'm I don't sit back and look on that with regret either.
- 28:35I mean, prison brought me a wife, a trade, and a mission.
- 28:40Right?
- 28:40And that mission was to help other young men because that's all I saw in there.
- 28:43Right?
- 28:43Is these young men that were just lost.
- 28:45They didn't have a purpose.
- 28:46They didn't have a community.
- 28:47They didn't have any of that.
- 28:48Right?
- 28:49And, know, I think you got to start building communities where you're at.
- 28:53For you, that was obviously the DJ world, you know.
- 28:56But also, know, your dancers mean a lot to you too.
- 28:59They bring a lot to the show.
- 29:01And these young ladies, they got a story.
- 29:05Right?
- 29:05And they're coming from not great backgrounds, but they're out there doing their art form.
- 29:12Right?
- 29:12And and it's not all about just shaking their ass.
- 29:15No.
- 29:15Right?
- 29:15It's much more than that.
- 29:17They're they're family.
- 29:21They're sisters.
- 29:21They're I mean, they're some of them are younger than being too young to be my sister,
- 29:26but they're they're family.
- 29:28They come out.
- 29:29They they do work hard, and they work for tips.
- 29:32And when I when I say work, it's they they play.
- 29:36They play for tips.
- 29:38You know, they they talented bunch of girls.
- 29:41I I tried to there's video of me trying some of the things they do, and that's not great.
- 29:46I don't I can't do that.
- 29:47I can't dance that way.
- 29:50But it it adds to it's part of the show.
- 29:52Yeah.
- 29:53Right?
- 29:53Like, they're not up there because they, you know, because it brings them some, you know,
- 29:59personal joy always.
- 30:02Right?
- 30:02Like, it's hardest dancing seven, eight hours a day, man.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:06Like, it is work.
- 30:07No.
- 30:08It is.
- 30:08But it's part of the show, especially out at the Buffalo Chip, the biker culture to have
- 30:13them, but they really and especially the girls that you got on the team and the family that
- 30:18they're there to make it an experience for the people that are there.
- 30:21Yeah.
- 30:22Right?
- 30:22They take a lot of pride in that, and that's what I really saw this year as different from
- 30:27years past because it's hard to it's hard to capture that in a night.
- 30:30Right?
- 30:31It's hard to see that because there's so much input coming at you, but being there for the
- 30:35whole week and watching how they were supporting one another and, I mean, the
- 30:39blisters on the hands and on your feet and on, you know, your your body is giving out because
- 30:44you're tired, but a lot of your girls are doing they're performing sober as well.
- 30:48Right?
- 30:49It's not like we're out there partying.
- 30:50Yes.
- 30:51We are playing.
- 30:51Right?
- 30:52Our work doesn't look like your work.
- 30:54Most people watching this.
- 30:55Right?
- 30:55No.
- 30:56We get to have a really good time doing what we do, but we couldn't do the job and especially
- 31:01in a marathon that is the surges motorcycle rally, especially at the Buffalo Chip.
- 31:07If you're trying to be part of the if you're trying to party and put on the party at the
- 31:11same time,
- 31:11it just doesn't work.
- 31:12No.
- 31:12We've lost DJs and we've lost girls because of that.
- 31:15I mean, it's when I say lost, they you know, they're alive and living well.
- 31:19We just as much as it's a party up there, we have rules.
- 31:24You know, we have standards.
- 31:25We we wanna be able to I feel for the girls, they wanna dance and show how the music is
- 31:30making them feel to everybody that's looking around so then people can feel safe.
- 31:35You know, now I feel safe.
- 31:37This girl up here is showing me how the music's making her feel.
- 31:39I can too show the world how my how how I feel to this music.
- 31:43That's a great point that I never thought of it that way, but that's why the dancers are so
- 31:48important because if you didn't have them, nobody would dance.
- 31:52Well Right?
- 31:52They would be
- 31:53on them boxes, and they'd be tripping and falling.
- 31:55Yeah.
- 31:55Right?
- 31:55We would just not have to have the boxes up there anymore.
- 32:00And we would still get people dancing.
- 32:01You know?
- 32:01They they people are going to dance.
- 32:04The girls are there to show them that it's okay.
- 32:06Yeah.
- 32:06Right.
- 32:06It gives them the freedom.
- 32:07It gives them the confidence maybe to go out there because, you know, especially, you know,
- 32:11the girls are scantily dressed.
- 32:13Right?
- 32:14You know, it's part of the show.
- 32:15They're in swimsuits.
- 32:16Right.
- 32:16Basically, swimsuits.
- 32:17Right.
- 32:18You know, out out there doing their thing, but I never thought about the the mental side of
- 32:22that.
- 32:23That is you seeing them up there, you know, wearing their bathing suit and dancing and
- 32:29doing all the things that they're doing, that it makes you feel a little less stupid maybe to
- 32:34go out there and shake your ass on the dance floor.
- 32:35Right.
- 32:36Because nobody's watching you anyway.
- 32:37They're watching them.
- 32:38Right.
- 32:39Right.
- 32:39You know?
- 32:39What what a lot of people don't understand about that whole that the club, any club that
- 32:45you walk into.
- 32:45I mean, it's we're using the Buffalo Chip Club Chip as the model here.
- 32:51When you come up there I'm telling you a story.
- 32:53If I'm active in my set and I'm playing my music, maybe you don't know this, I don't plan
- 33:00a set.
- 33:01I don't put music in the in in lines.
- 33:03I don't do what you see all these DJs in, you know, Miami and Vegas and Tomorrowland and all
- 33:09the, I'm not creating a list of music.
- 33:12It's I'm gonna start here, and I'm gonna watch.
- 33:16And from what I see, I'm gonna tell the story to the next song, to the next song, to the next
- 33:19song, to the next song.
- 33:20Never know which one's coming next.
- 33:23In my storytelling, my girls, not my girls, the girls are dancing to that visually dictating
- 33:33what that story is to the crowd.
- 33:35Yeah.
- 33:36It's interpretive dance.
- 33:37Yeah.
- 33:37So when that happens, then
- 33:39it naturally it brings people that wanna hear the story together.
- 33:43And in my mind, that's what DJing is.
- 33:45When when I do this, I don't even when I was young, walking my my my very first mixtape I
- 33:51ever made, I was in fourth grade.
- 33:53I was recording, and I've said this before.
- 33:55So if you've heard me before, you've heard this story before.
- 34:00I would listen to the Hot one hundred.
- 34:01It was a radio station back back in I'm not gonna tell you how old that how how long ago
- 34:05that was.
- 34:07But I would record the songs, the entire Hot one hundred, and then I would take those songs
- 34:12and put them in the order I wanted them in to dictate what I wanted the mix to look like.
- 34:17And, I mean, it was it was a lot of fun.
- 34:20That was that was great.
- 34:20That was the first time I ever put a story together through through music.
- 34:24And if you go onto the YouTube, it's r d Horan on YouTube, h o r a n.
- 34:32There's a few that absolutely suck, and I like them up there.
- 34:36People are like, take them down.
- 34:37I'm like, no.
- 34:37Because I wanna show what it was and what it is.
- 34:40What it started like, what it is now today.
- 34:42And if you listen to my mixes that are on there, you'll hear a story.
- 34:45You've gotta find it.
- 34:46It's your it's your job to find it, but it's in there.
- 34:47Yeah.
- 34:48I love that because that's always what I've brought to music as well.
- 34:52And, obviously, we're we're different forms of the same art.
- 34:55Right?
- 34:55Yeah.
- 34:56Different in music.
- 34:57Right?
- 34:57You know?
- 34:58What what you saw of me playing out at Big Mama's yesterday was very much the same.
- 35:02I mean, I usually start with the same five songs, but even those songs tell the story of
- 35:05who I am.
- 35:06Right?
- 35:06Yeah.
- 35:06Starting off with a little fishing in the dark into Copperhead, but then immediately mixing in
- 35:10like more of me, which is the the Sublime and the mixing Steve Miller with a little bit of
- 35:16Shaggy in there.
- 35:17Right?
- 35:18And like being able to expose you to like, this is who I am.
- 35:20This is the stuff that I've been into.
- 35:22I I'm here to perform for you, but I'm trying to get a feel for what you're into without
- 35:27having to sit up here and go, what do you wanna hear?
- 35:28Yeah.
- 35:29You know, like Exactly.
- 35:30Because you're gonna shout a bunch of artists that maybe I don't know.
- 35:32Right?
- 35:32I don't know every song.
- 35:33That's not my job.
- 35:34Yep.
- 35:34Yep.
- 35:34That's not who I am, but I can get close and I can use that feeling out process to do exactly
- 35:40what you do.
- 35:40It's like, hey, man.
- 35:41I know I know they're gonna love this song.
- 35:42Right?
- 35:42They they love those.
- 35:43They will love those ones, then I know they're gonna have that some so I might go away from
- 35:47that for a little while, but I already know what I can come back to.
- 35:49Right.
- 35:49It's called I call it fishing.
- 35:51Called it fishing for years.
- 35:52Yeah.
- 35:52I know you said fishing in the dark, and, again, you'll hear on one of my interviews, I
- 35:55call it fishing.
- 35:56I fish the crab.
- 35:57I'll throw my rod out.
- 35:58My first song, I'll throw you know, I'll do my first jerk.
- 36:01That's my second song.
- 36:03Third jerk.
- 36:04Okay.
- 36:04I gotcha.
- 36:05Really in then.
- 36:06Yeah.
- 36:07It's it's till the dance is really
- 36:08good.
- 36:08Acting.
- 36:09What I was most impressed
- 36:10with yesterday, I've never heard it before, you know, but the way that you did it, you know,
- 36:14going from one song right into the next song on the one, on beat for those who don't know what
- 36:21that meant.
- 36:23And it just was it was like you were DJing but with the guitar.
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:27Yeah.
- 36:28Totally.
- 36:28It was like, I I I dig this.
- 36:30And I'm sorry I didn't stare at you.
- 36:32I can't you know, I put my back to you for only only one reason, and that's because I didn't
- 36:37want to make you nervous by any means.
- 36:38Yeah.
- 36:39And I I appreciate that.
- 36:40I don't know
- 36:40who gets nervous or who you get nervous around, but even when I watch out my DJ friends, I'll
- 36:45stand off to the side so they can't directly see me.
- 36:48Right.
- 36:48Right.
- 36:49Well, I appreciate that, but I'm in the zone, man.
- 36:51Yeah.
- 36:51And much like you are when you're up there, and that's why I wasn't afraid to put a camera in
- 36:54your face, so it'd be up above you and getting all the crazy shots
- 36:57that we got.
- 36:58Right.
- 36:58From the thing.
- 36:59And can't get to see some of that.
- 37:00Man, and we made a short promo reel just to get something out right away, but I have so much of
- 37:06this stuff to go back and to chop up.
- 37:08And I know Rob's got a ton of footage too, so we'd love to put it all together and to make a
- 37:12nice promo reel for for, you know, not just for the Buffalo chip either.
- 37:17It's for the fans.
- 37:18Mhmm.
- 37:18For you to see, hey, man.
- 37:19Come come come see what we do.
- 37:20Yeah.
- 37:21Right?
- 37:21Like, pay the the price of admission is worth it.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:24Right?
- 37:24Like, and and that's what I've always, kinda strived with the with the scene projects and
- 37:30with, you know, I've always been focused on the artist.
- 37:32Like, it it's not necessarily about the fans when I'm talking with you or when I'm talking
- 37:36with any other of the 200 plus artists that have been in our show over the last year and a
- 37:40half.
- 37:40Right?
- 37:41Right.
- 37:41It's about them.
- 37:42Should tell me your story so we can put it out there into the world.
- 37:45But for our coverage of like a rock the country or for our footage of the rally at all the
- 37:50venues we went to and especially the Buffalo Chip is to show the the fan side of it.
- 37:56Right?
- 37:57All of the vendors that are out there, the guys like Op One Vet who I got to form a
- 38:00relationship with, and, you know, the whole the whole Freedom Day celebration is incredible.
- 38:07Right?
- 38:07Like, to to have the vets, you know, represented on stage, the big presentations,
- 38:14it's again to be front row for, you know, my breaking down in tears because of what she's
- 38:18been able to do Mhmm.
- 38:19You know, as a former Buffalo Chip, you know, poster bottle winner.
- 38:23Right?
- 38:24And and but to get her continued dedication to the family and to raising money for veterans
- 38:30and just all the things you were doing.
- 38:31And to see her on stage being right there and capturing those moments of her overcome with
- 38:37emotion.
- 38:38Right?
- 38:38Because it's important to us.
- 38:39Like, it means something to us.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:41It means so much to us to be able to support these communities that that's what I was about.
- 38:47It's about supporting those other like you said, we all kinda have our own family, and
- 38:51then you come into the larger one.
- 38:53I have to imagine, know, to kind of equate it to the, you know, the native American tribes
- 38:58that used to be out here.
- 38:59They all knew each other.
- 39:00Mhmm.
- 39:00Right?
- 39:00You know, everybody wasn't at war all the time.
- 39:02No.
- 39:03A lot of times, they were they were in peace with each other and that, hey, that's yours and
- 39:07this is ours and this is how we live and they would get together in, you know, a a powwow or
- 39:11or whatever they would call them then.
- 39:13That's what we kind of identified as now, but Right.
- 39:15You know, we're very blessed in the Black Hills to to have that culture still represented and
- 39:21still very alive and well.
- 39:23And this is just a different family, a different family of families coming together.
- 39:28Yeah.
- 39:29And we get to do it, you know, every year that first Friday in August for the next ten days
- 39:34and celebrating with some of the biggest names in rock and country and the biggest names in in
- 39:41EDM right here in the Black Hills.
- 39:43And
- 39:44I would say I would say club.
- 39:45I have some friends that are EDM producers and music players, and those guys can get it.
- 39:51Yeah.
- 39:51Yeah.
- 39:52Club?
- 39:53Take me to the club.
- 39:54I'll take that I'll take that one.
- 39:57Well, I think that's a great point to cut it off, man.
- 40:00Take me to the club.
- 40:01Take me some t shirts.
- 40:02We need some t shirts, man.
- 40:05Yeah.
- 40:05Exactly.
- 40:06Awesome, man.
- 40:07Well, this is DJ Julio, my brother Ryan.
- 40:12Man, this has been great, and it's gonna be great again when we all get back to the Buffalo
- 40:16Chip.
- 40:17I wanna thank Damon and Woody, obviously.
- 40:20You know, you guys are at the top of it, but everybody involved with the Buffalo Chip
- 40:24family.
- 40:24Thank you for having me there as part of the scene projects to capture it.
- 40:29Special shout out to Cody.
- 40:31Cody Ertman, I put those kids on one of their first shows way back when they were in high
- 40:35school, man.
- 40:36Really?
- 40:36And
- 40:36now, yeah,
- 40:37I have tape from that somewhere in the archives, man.
- 40:40But him and his friends were still in high school and to now see to have him kinda return
- 40:46the favor.
- 40:47Yeah.
- 40:47Right?
- 40:47To put me on and to get me a pass to be there and the access, I definitely took full
- 40:53advantage of it, you know, and got out there to.
- 40:55Supporting bare knuckle fighting and getting to meet Cheyenne Bentlip and watch our South
- 40:59Dakota girl, you know, take a
- 41:01win home.
- 41:02She's such a badass.
- 41:03Yeah.
- 41:03And we've been we've been friends now, on Instagram since then and kinda always sharing
- 41:08her stuff and her journey, and can't wait to have her back.
- 41:11I hope we get to see her again.
- 41:13I hope BKFC comes back for the third year in a row.
- 41:15I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to.
- 41:18Oh.
- 41:18Hey.
- 41:19Maybe hopefully Connor comes back again this year.
- 41:21That'd be pretty cool.
- 41:22I got Assuming he's not president of Ireland by that point.
- 41:24Which he probably will be, which is fine.
- 41:26He can come over.
- 41:26He he'll be fine.
- 41:28More than welcome.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:29I got to meet him that year.
- 41:30Yeah?
- 41:30Yeah.
- 41:31He came up to the club, hung out for a little bit.
- 41:33That's incredible, man.
- 41:34Yeah.
- 41:34There's no remorse.
- 41:35As I thought he was.
- 41:36I mean, don't get me wrong.
- 41:37I wouldn't scrap with the dude.
- 41:38No.
- 41:38He was short.
- 41:39Yeah.
- 41:39I didn't realize he was that short.
- 41:40No.
- 41:41Well, he in what?
- 41:42He fought in the, the featherweight, wasn't it?
- 41:44That was the first one he came up, man, and, throws that concrete right hand, though.
- 41:50Would not wanna mix it up with him.
- 41:52No, sir.
- 41:53Will shake his hand and go away.
- 41:55Right.
- 41:56Awesome.
- 41:57Anything you wanna plug before I let you go, man?
- 41:59No.
- 41:59Just get your ticket to
- 42:00the Buffalo Chip.
- 42:02Find me on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube.
- 42:06Have fun.
- 42:07When words fail, music speaks.
- 42:09Listen to it.
- 42:10Yep.
- 42:11Come see us at Club Chip.
- 42:12That's where we're both gonna be, all week all week long during rally.
- 42:16Get your get your passes now.
- 42:18Yes.
- 42:18They're cheap now.
- 42:19Now.
- 42:19Do it.
- 42:20If you know you're gonna be coming out for Sturgis, the the clock is already ticking.
- 42:24They've already announced, the biggest headliner that they maybe have ever had.
- 42:28I know Skynyrd and Kid Rock and those are big, but We had is at the top of the heap right Ozzy
- 42:34Osbourne.
- 42:34Right.
- 42:35She's got some work to Right. Do
- 42:36Do She's got some work to do there.
- 42:37Yes.
- 42:38But also it wasn't Ozzy at the height of his career too.
- 42:40Yes, it was a big name, but Lainey is at the top.
- 42:43I mean, Grammys right now.
- 42:45Mhmm.
- 42:45And I feel like if the Buffalo Chip can start to bring in more of these artists that they're
- 42:49taught Jason Aldine this last year.
- 42:50Right?
- 42:50Yeah.
- 42:51And and starting to lean more into that country road because country is where rock music was.
- 42:55You know what we need
- 42:56around here?
- 42:57What's that?
- 42:57We need Lincoln Park.
- 42:59Oh, man.
- 42:59That'd be awesome.
- 43:00And we obviously know that that Chester is gone, but the the band is still
- 43:04Another dumb story.
- 43:05I played basketball with those guys.
- 43:06Oh, yeah?
- 43:07Chester Bennington, Mike Shinona, and exhibit when they performed in Rapid.
- 43:12The times you had.
- 43:13We need to start a podcast of our own that's just the DJ Julio memory bank.
- 43:17Yeah.
- 43:18That's what what do I remember now?
- 43:21Just kidding.
- 43:22Well, and you almost need somebody else to come in and be talking about it to bring them up
- 43:25because what you're gonna remember are are different than what most people would care to
- 43:30remember.
- 43:30For a lot of people, it's the it's the big names, and it's the those things matter.
- 43:35To us, those kinda get filed back in the archives and only get brought up Yeah.
- 43:38When the band comes up.
- 43:39You know?
- 43:40Yeah.
- 43:40You know Mike Liberatore or he he goes by Liberate or Riley Skier?
- 43:44No.
- 43:45So they're couple of the guys I was talking about in the EDM scene that just really know
- 43:50how to play, really know music, and that's one of my favorite times DJing.
- 43:54We did a three way, a Menage 12 music, if you will.
- 44:02Just did back to back to back.
- 44:04All three of us played at Synesthesia two years ago, three years ago.
- 44:09It was a lot of fun.
- 44:10Yeah.
- 44:11You know?
- 44:11And a and a special shout out.
- 44:12I'm glad you brought it up.
- 44:13Synesthesia, a great little festival been going on here.
- 44:17Was just a week or two ago.
- 44:18Right?
- 44:19It that's I
- 44:19think it's two weeks after the rally.
- 44:21So when however long ago that's been.
- 44:23Yeah.
- 44:23Yeah.
- 44:24Well, shit.
- 44:24That's been a month now too.
- 44:25It's crazy how fast the time moves and the dilation of time.
- 44:29Right?
- 44:29And I think you notice it a lot more as elder statesmen now Yeah.
- 44:34That it's just like it it can seem like it's so long and such a short amount of time in the
- 44:39same breath.
- 44:40And, man, I I've I've enjoyed the time that we've had here today.
- 44:44Yes.
- 44:44Getting to sit down with you in your home.
- 44:46I thank you for having me in here and and sharing your space, man.
- 44:50It's it doesn't look much different than mine.
- 44:52Crystals on the wall and Yeah.
- 44:54And plants in every window.
- 44:56You know?
- 44:56Shout out to the wife.
- 44:58Yeah.
- 44:59I I do my own decorating at the house.
- 45:01You guys can't
- 45:02see it, but the one thing I did in this room was I hung that TV.
- 45:07My wife has done all of this.
- 45:08She's she's great.
- 45:09Well Maybe in your b roll, you'll
- 45:11we'll hit a little we'll hit a little pan and get it in there for sure.
- 45:15Speaking of TV, this one might air on TruTV plus, our our new network that we've joined.
- 45:21And watching the scene projects kinda go from audio only less a year ago where it was only
- 45:27that.
- 45:28We went to video in January.
- 45:30The the the projects just passed a thousand uploads and a quarter million views on YouTube
- 45:35last week.
- 45:35Congratulations.
- 45:36Thank you.
- 45:37It's tough to come by, man, and not everybody gets a chance to do it.
- 45:40So I'm trying to take it all in stride.
- 45:42You know, it's not about us.
- 45:43It's about the artists that we support.
- 45:44We got a new show called Love Noise, every Wednesday at 9PM live on YouTube, Twitch, and
- 45:50all the other places where we're going, but, a chance to hear artists Yep.
- 45:56Yep.
- 45:56Every Wednesday nine nine central, so 08:00 out here.
- 46:00And it's a great time to meet new artists, not just the interview portion, but getting to hear
- 46:05their music and getting to hear the story behind that song.
- 46:08Right?
- 46:08Or the recording of it or just whatever.
- 46:10Right?
- 46:11And Right.
- 46:11It's just it's just a hang, man.
- 46:12It's this, but we do it every every week live on Zoom and and on our, you know, streaming
- 46:18networks.
- 46:19And it's just been fun, man.
- 46:21Building out this community has been the the the greatest blessing of my life to have this
- 46:25kind of opportunity too.
- 46:27Thank you for doing it.
- 46:27Well, thank you
- 46:28for being part of the scene,
- 46:29brother.
- 46:29I know you've built a lot of it, so appreciate you coming on the show.
- 46:33Appreciate y'all listening.
- 46:34That's DJ Julio.
- 46:35I'm Bubba Starts, and we'll see you at the club.
- 46:38See you at the club.
