- 0:00SPEAKER_05: Right, lads.
- 0:01SPEAKER_05: Quick things out of the way.
- 0:02SPEAKER_05: How was the weekend?
- 0:04SPEAKER_05: Mine wasn't bad, but uh pretty quiet, pretty quiet, so yeah, uh watched a bit of football and lost on uh lost on the football as well as I do most Saturdays.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I had a game, obviously, um over in Belfast, lost to one, disappointing.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: Ref gave a dodgy, a dodgy penalty for the first goal to get them back in it.
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, just got back into Glasgow yesterday to see the family and watched a bit of Scottish football, which we'll touch on later on.
- 0:30SPEAKER_04: Oh I top draw that I think we've got a listener.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: Go on, Azure Boy, because I think he's listened last week, googled Dylan's goal, and took a few uh hints from that that goal he scored on uh Saturday night.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Very similar, wasn't it?
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Two worldies by yeah, I've seen it, it wasn't it was a nice goal before, but yeah, it's rolling back the years, I think.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: It was uh one of them, wasn't it?
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: So many options, and you think too many options, so in the end you just go yourself on his left foot, great finish, and puts us into Dreamland, isn't it?
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: The third.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: But uh we said, and I've been on another podcast somewhere leading up to this saying there's a player in there because we've seen him a couple of seasons tearing it up, and he just needed a little bit of time to get going, and now he's got his belief he could be a key key player from now then the season.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: And what happens out in the cold, probably looking at a lone move, getting told it hadn't worked, and next thing he's he's suddenly our top player.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: You're gonna say it's belief, isn't it?
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Belief in yourself and self-confidence, it's makes you a different player, doesn't it?
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: And I mean, if he'd have gone through like that a while back, he would have passed, wouldn't he?
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but he's full of confidence.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: He probably passes right on the halfway line.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: Oh, I'm passing it, yeah.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: I'm putting a one-two and passing it weight.
- 1:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so fair play to him, and as we say, obviously we'll get onto it, but yeah, really good goal.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: Can we take credit then?
- 1:49SPEAKER_05: We'll take it.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: You will take credit.
- 1:53SPEAKER_04: Three in the middle had a hand in that victory.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:57SPEAKER_04: For those listening from the start, we've got a Johnny Brain update.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: So, to recap on the Johnny Brain story, we Skip had a night out shock after a Port Vale match.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: They didn't have a keeper the following weeks, and the transfer window was shut, so they needed to find some sort of free signing somewhere.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: So they didn't scour the loan market or whatever free agent market.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: Skip just had a nightclub experience, ran into an ex-goalkeeper he knew at Newcastle United, who was a Carlisle Lard.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Next thing, he's in Skip's car on the Monday morning, down he goes, and it's a trail for Portville.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: Ends up playing for what, three to four years?
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: Four years, yeah, got a got a very good move to Walshall as well, after it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: But what he did, Johnny Brain, he didn't ring in or anything, or he left a job at uh centre parks in charge of the archery.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: So our worry was that there's six, seven kids down there waiting for archery on the Monday morning.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: But we've had a message from Joe Thompson over the weekend.
- 2:56SPEAKER_04: Lads, absolutely loving the pod.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: Keep it up.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Just to put your mind at ease, I work at Centre Parks, and I was the one who got the call when Johnny Brainer called in sick when he was actually on a week's trial at Port Vale.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: I covered the archery session, so no kids' holidays were ruined for you.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: My uni housemate is a Vale fan, and he texts me saying, We've apparently signed some lad from Carlisle.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: Do you know him?
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: And I was like, Yep, I bloody work with him, and he's meant to be off sick.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: So the next day I go to work and the boss is like, Has anyone heard of Johnny?
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: Is he still unwell?
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: And we had to break it to him that he's now a pro footballer.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: The boss couldn't believe it, and he gets a photo of Johnny putting on the notice board saying, Wanted.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Has anyone seen this man as a joke?
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: It was still up there all these years later, up until COVID, when we had to have a mass clear out.
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: Wish I took a picture of it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: So my mind is at ease about uh the poor kids.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: The poor kids who were there for artery, and the kick the families had paid about a grand for three days.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: So from there now on, we can put the Johnny Brain to bed.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: He tossed work off, absolutely binned it off, went and got a career at Port Vale, still living in the Stoke area, isn't he skid?
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's got a new life down in Stoke, yeah, that's what I believe.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: I don't think he comes back up very often at all.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: Thank you to Joe Thompson for that text.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, thank you very much.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: Right, let's go on to our main stuff.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: Hello everyone, and welcome to episode three.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Three already of three in the middle, a podcast talking on all things colour united, football in general, honest opinions, and a few laughs, as well as upcoming episodes featuring some special guests.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: We've got a few booked in.
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: Again, thank you so much for the support we've had so far.
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: We really appreciate it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: As well as the questions we have in which we will come into soon.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: We've got a few in, lads, so we're going to go through them.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: Good.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: Keep sending them in.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: As I've explained to a few people, their question might be used further down the line or in a different episode when it fits into the topics we're discussing.
- 5:14SPEAKER_04: You are listening to me, Chris Lumsden, former Sunderland Barnes Lee and Carlisle United player, Dylan McGeok, ex Hibbs, Celtic, Sunderland, Aberdeen, Carlisle, and Forrest Green, as well as playing for Scotland as a full international and is currently playing his trade with Bellam United in Northern Ireland.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: The World Cup dream is still on for Dylan because he's still playing.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: You never know.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: You never know.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: Can only try.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: And completing the midfield is Roddy Collins' biggest mistake.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: Mark Skip Boyd, who's former former club, sorry, including Newcastle United, Port Vale, Collar United finally, Barrow, and he was part of the Gretna squad that went right through the Scottish Leagues around 20 years ago.
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: But that's a show in itself, isn't it, Skip?
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: Oh, you could have an hour on that, I'm telling you.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was uh that was some setup there.
- 6:01SPEAKER_05: Money flying, money flying about for logical.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: Doctor up front, wasn't there?
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: Big Doctor Duke, yeah.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: Used to score a hat-trick every week and drive home in the the chairman's what was it, Bentley or no?
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: He gave it the chairman, so the chairman, Brooks Mileson was throwing loads of money into Gretna, but he wanted to get in a Carlisle, he had a little stake in Carlisle.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: So he was dishing out these uh Chryslers all over the place.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: So Kenny Duca's got the Chrysler Chrysler Crossfire.
- 6:32SPEAKER_05: Is that the one Ryan Balduchino had the crossfire?
- 6:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because obviously he was Baldy, wasn't he?
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: You know, he he he was too good for the for the normal Chrysler car.
- 6:41SPEAKER_05: But Kenny Duca, Brooks Malsen said to him, he said, every time you score a hat trick, you can go him in my big sports car.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: Well, he scored about four or five hundred games, so most weekends just flying home in the sports car, yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: Dangle that carrot.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: I know, yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: I just remember all the all through the years, the you know, when Sky Sports put up the top scorers in every division, Kenny Duca was always the top, and every year they'd do a feature on him being a doctor and and and not giving up that job.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: But I got all the way at the Scottish Premier, yeah, done well.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: But they had to move to Motherwell's ground, didn't it?
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Killed it a little bit.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, once I got into the SPL, it was it was a different story.
- 7:12SPEAKER_05: Um but the going from the third, second, and and first, they're done they'd done really well in the they annihilated the leagues really.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: Mick Raz took over at some point.
- 7:21SPEAKER_05: Mick was there, yeah.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: Uh Paul Murray, Danny Granger.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: They were all there.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Danny Granger was there a long time, so was Gav Skelton.
- 7:26SPEAKER_05: Gav Skelton.
- 7:27SPEAKER_05: They were good servants to Gretner.
- 7:29SPEAKER_05: There was some people though absolutely fleeced it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, I played about five minutes in three years, so I could be in that category.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: Brendan McGill, bless him.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: We went into League One and Brendan still had contract, and Simo loved him.
- 7:41SPEAKER_04: He was getting off a three and a half year deal with Gretna on double money.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: Well, can I just tell you how I got my contract there?
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: Come on, then.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: So we played against a team called Dalbiti Star.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: Now, it's nothing against Dalbiti Star, but I don't know what league they're in.
- 7:53SPEAKER_05: So it was a preseason friendly.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: He played 45 minutes, I think, with about seven or eight nil up at halftime.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: And Brooks Malston just made a beeline for me and said, uh, do you want to sign?
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: I was like, Well, I'm I haven't got a club like but he said, I'll give you three uh deal on X amount of money.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: I went, I'll sign in the morning, and that was it.
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: Off we go.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he didn't need an agent, not good.
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: He was good like as I say, he had a little bit to do with Carl United, and it was always nice on a Friday when their envelopes came.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Anyway, right, bit of housekeeping, quickly.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: You want to get in touch?
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: Our Insta handle is at three in the middle eight, email threeinthemidle at yahoo.com.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: And a massive, massive shout out to our fantastic sponsor this week, GW Auto Repairs, based in Long Island Park, opposite Matalan, if you know Carlisle, who specialise in car, van, and motorbike MOT, servicing and repairs, as well as supplying and fitting tyres.
- 8:46SPEAKER_04: We all know Mike Wood, our lads.
- 8:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's a good guy.
- 8:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we know Mike, yeah.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: Coach is kidding, actually, a few things when I was up at Khalil.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, his boys in the academy, isn't he?
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's doing it.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: Good size, good power, great with his feet.
- 8:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he can play, yeah.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: He uh he saved me once, Mike, you know, before I went on radio.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: I think I had one of them mornings, you know, where you've got head loss about something.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: And I was going to fill my car up for when I got back from the radio, and I put I think well, mine's a diesel, so I put the petrol in the diesel.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: So I was googling, like, I can't remember what he's called.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: He comes out and sorts it, there's a specialist, but it's about 800 quid.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: Then it was 400, and then five nightmare.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: I just off the cuff rang Mike, he went, I'll have it sorted for you.
- 9:26SPEAKER_04: By the time I got back, I think it was Bradford away, car was on my drive, engine stripped, filled back up.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: Brilliant brilliant.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: So give him give him a look, get down there, get your MOT, service him, whatever.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: Tires now, as I've said.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: So thank you very much to Mike and GW Auto Repairs for sponsoring.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: As I've said, without this, it'd probably the pod can't happen, can it?
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: So we've had a lot of text about sponsoring going forward.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: So we'll be in touch when we can, and again, appreciate it.
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: So, as I said, we'll we'll answer some of the questions that have came in, we'll link it to what we've done and what we're talking about through this week, and then we'll go into football in general and we'll have a bit of crack and we'll see where it takes us, eh?
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: Let's do it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: Right, let's get straight on to Carlisle as we usually do.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: What a couple of games.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we say that.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: What the first episode that the the week coming up is going to be huge.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Um and to be fair, the the Rochdale game was disappointing.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: I think we we all know that that we can uh sat in and just let them dictate the majority of the game, but big reaction during the week at home and then to go away and beat Forest Green, who to be fair, they change they change their team every week, don't they?
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Sign about five players a week, but um to go down there, um a team that's in round about them and get a good one and sets it up nicely for the rest of the season.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I'm gonna just I think this is where we are now.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: Most of the top teams are probably better on the ball than us, more comfortable on the ball with us than us, um, comfortable going through the lines, bit of shadow play, they'll probably do a lot of it.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: But I just feel we're a typical team now.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: I think we've got some danger men, but we've got some big lads at the back.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: I thought McAdam and um Gilliad were excellent in midfield.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: I thought they looked proper midfielders, and then when your match winners are or doing stuff like that, I just feel you know what, let the other team have the ball if we can go up and score goals like that and then dig it out.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: That just might be the team we are.
- 11:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, they wanted a big response, didn't they?
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: They got it, they got the home win um against Gunthorpe against two two top sides and went to Forest Green and still wasn't sure what to expect, but the first half was was really, really good.
- 11:39SPEAKER_05: Um, I mean, obviously we're gonna talk about Audgy Boy's goal, that was that was phenomenal, but it comes down to confidence, doesn't it?
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: And and belief, and that goal's just a typical example of that.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: Like we said, it's a while back he'd have passed that early doors, but he went all the way himself because there's a there's a clip online of the dugout telling him to pass, pass, pass, and in the end they're like, they're all one by one, aren't they?
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: And then he scored, and so it was great.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: But yeah, but uh even in the second half when they've scored at a good time, I think, to make it 3-1.
- 12:07SPEAKER_05: And I was a bit worried, but they defended well, yeah, they defended well.
- 12:11SPEAKER_05: Um they did.
- 12:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously they were penned in, but that was gonna happen.
- 12:14SPEAKER_05: I think Forest Green are good on the ball, um, but they defended well and they're seeing it out, and I think just a really good week and get a bit of a good feel, uh feel-good factor back at the at the club.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think see what you're saying about like they found their kind of way and like what they are.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: Obviously, there's been grumbles this season about not attractive football and all this kind of stuff, do you mean and just getting results?
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: You kind of want a bit of both, obviously, if you can.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: Um but now I think the way they want to play now, and they've got some match winners who can travel up the pit so they can afford to be hard to beat, kind of get maybe the full team behind the ball into a low block, and then force teams to overcommit, and then you've got ball carriers who can and it's probably similar with Linny at the start of the season where he was kind of doing that, do you know what I mean?
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Like maybe more defensive and then give him the ball and he was going making something happen, and it was kind of not paping over the cracks, but the performances prun weren't as good then, but the goals have dried up, so yeah, hopefully he's he's the one now that can kind of keep driving that forward.
- 13:16SPEAKER_04: It's a funny one, isn't it?
- 13:17SPEAKER_04: Because Penny for Mark Hughes' thoughts should he have gone like that at Rochdale?
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: Because for me, we weren't kind of high block, we were, but once they played the second pass for a screen, we were on Armstrong's legs to get up there, and and then I thought Emilton looks a lot fitter now, looks sharper, he's covering the ground a bit more.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: But Wern, when Wern's in there, I think I know he scored, but you're probably taking out the creativity of a con Clark, but it's giving you a little bit more of a team perspective where I think the players like him in there because you can see what he's gonna get, and he does a lot of Armstrong's running as well.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so Armstrong's not running around doing everyone's from left to right, he's conserving a little bit.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: So when he is pressing, he's a lot more sharper.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's an honest player.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Like I've played with him, and obviously he's got quality, do you know?
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Both of them, both of them, yeah.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Stephen Welling as well.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: And he's an honest player, he works hard.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: If you if you give him a roll and tell him to do it, you'll he'll definitely do it.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: He won't shy away from it.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: And as you said, you've got Armstrong up there, you know that's what you're gonna get.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: You see the goal he gets, um, Wern's goal that he he shuts down that pass and nicks it.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Um his work rate in general's formula.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: He's gonna that's his he knows that's his game.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Do you know he's not behind him as a midfielder?
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: He's not gonna be like he's not gonna give you loads and loads of quality on the ball and that finesse finish and stuff, but the the work rate, that's what you're gonna get off him.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: And perfect for when you're playing against teams like Forest Green, and that's where probably the frustration against Rochdale was where they're gonna have a lot of the ball, they're gonna play past it in the middle of the pitch, and set and a half's are gonna take touches.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: If you can set up a trap where you can go have a bit of a go, yeah.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Don't care who you are.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: You see it, Barcelona Man Cities.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Sometimes when you have a bit of a goal, you can nick things in the final fourth and go get at them.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because you're saying that Saturday, didn't you?
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: But against Rochdale, you just thought they would just have to not nothing for if they did win it back for what they were gonna sort of do with it or like when they were gonna press.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: But forest green, I thought, especially the way you press for the for the goal for Words goal was.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: But see they set up the way they did against Rochdale.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: They they go they don't get their goals, no, definitely not.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Maybe maybe the the one when he's gone through himself, um but the ones where Armstrong's nicked and a few others, you don't get them goals because you're not in a position to go even affect the game.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: So it was almost like a mentality switch, or maybe bringing the team up of ten yards to get to even get close to center halves.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: Well, that's perfect because it takes us on to a question we had, and apologies, I'll I'll get out who it was next week.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: But afternoon, just to remind you of my question does the present team give too much respect to teams, forcing us to play safe, and how does this compare to the conference promotion team?
- 15:48SPEAKER_04: So, what we just passed on there, was you touching on was the Rochdale.
- 15:52SPEAKER_04: Did we give them too much respect by sitting off?
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: Whereas we've just seen against Forest Green and Scunt, where we were engaged and went 10 yards up the pitch, suddenly it's a different animal, isn't it?
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'll touch on it again.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: It was just a mindset of getting close to people and being effective.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: If you're gonna I would love that Rochdale game, like I would have loved to play in that game as a Rochdale player because you're getting loads of touches, nobody within 10 yards of you.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Um and you can say you're kinda you're you're letting them play in front of you, but they're controlling the whole game.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: And then what happens is you give away a sloppy goal, what do you do now?
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: How do you switch it up?
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: For a screen game, you're kind of on the front foot, you're nicking things, you know they're gonna just keep playing the same way, and you go three-not.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: The game's finished in the first half.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: So it's just that kind of mentality switch, I think, that it can and there's players as well, playing on a team like that.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know that you're kind of you're just waiting on the right opportunity to go press, then it's better for you rather than just being like, right, I hope we just sit in and we don't don't concede.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: Do you think that maybe come from after the Rochdale game where they thought, well, we need to maybe engage more or be a bit higher up the pitch because the plan against Rochdale just for me didn't.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: As a player, after that Rochdale game, I would have been like that's disheartening, yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Soul destroying that.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: I feel like as a player, you've got to think you're the best, don't you?
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: And we've not laid a glove for you.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: This is top I want to go and prove I'm the better than their midfielder who's top of the league.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I want to engage, but it was just pass, pass, pass.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: So, and even if we won the g the ball back against Rochdale, we still had two thirds of the pitch to that.
- 17:24SPEAKER_05: Just after the goal, I just thought there was no response.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: Like there was like you say, there was no change, it was just well, it's one-nil, we'll just we'll just sort of be happy with that sort of thing.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: And like you're like, well, you can't be.
- 17:35SPEAKER_05: And like when you're not about to question too much respect, Rochdale, I would say, yeah.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: Like I think they've gone there and thought, I think these are quite a bit better than us, and I don't think you've can't have that many.
- 17:44SPEAKER_04: They're national league players for a reason, aren't they?
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: So get in their face, force mistakes, make it a bit more of a battle.
- 17:50SPEAKER_04: And I think that's what we've done the last couple because even when we went to the Ultranum game, they had the ball too much, ultra and centre half.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: Next thing we turned it and we're up, and the belief comes.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: Forest Green the same.
- 17:59SPEAKER_04: They're ball players, but they look very, very shaky.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it doesn't matter who you're playing.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: Like you've got boys that are playing the Champions League and Premier League players, as soon as you get put under pressure.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: You see Liverpool a few years back with the front three day, they'd play Man City and stuff who like who refused to play over the halfway line, playing balls on their own box.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: See when they go press them, the opportunities.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: And there was a time when Liverpool were beating beating City quite often, yeah, because it was just like how m how good they press.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Um don't get me wrong, I don't think they're gonna turn Scala gonna turn into a team that's gonna go dominate these sort of teams on the ball, possession-wise.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but the last two games they've put themselves in positions where right you might have the ball, but as soon as you come into these sort of areas, we're gonna pounce on you and they they go and nick a few balls and score a few goals, and before this week looks looks bright, do you know what I mean?
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: To finish third.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: So yeah, just that kind of and I bet the boys are loving it as well.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: There's nothing better when you work on that front foot press and it comes up.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: You think, oh, they're gonna have a lot of the ball here, but I'm gonna be in the front foot.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: I used to shout go.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: So I was kind of like at go, and it's no better than kind of enthusiastically encouraging your wingers like Simon Hackney we used to have in Brenton.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: Go on, shut them down.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: I'd even shout, he doesn't want it, he doesn't want to get in their head.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: And the next thing, you even if the defender clears it off you and it's hit you and it's went out for a throw-in.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: What's the Carl crowd like?
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: They're up because you've you've pushed them and pushed them.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: And I think that's what Brunton Park's missed over the last few months.
- 19:26SPEAKER_04: Just that you know, you talked about with Kyle Bartley on the first pod we've done doing that tackle, Marvin.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: Marvin Parkley, sorry, hitting someone, uh making something happen, getting the crowd up, you know, even a little tussle, just something to get it up.
- 19:41SPEAKER_04: And I just feel at the minute, well the last few games, it's just being dead and everyone just waiting on something.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Have you seen the boy look on nine at Sunland when they went in the championship?
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's a perfect example of that.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: You know, and he's honest enough to do that.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: He's honest, yeah.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Like from the outside, you would probably hate him.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Like you just think, oh, he's annoying.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Did you play with him?
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: I did, yeah.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: So tell what what is he like as a lad?
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: He's actually a good lad.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Is a good lad, yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: Just some of the stuff, the kissing, and I think he does a lot for reaction, but it seems off the pitch, he is he just pulls on that mask, doesn't he?
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: On the pitch, off it.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: No, he's listening he's a good he's a good boy, and like he went through uni and stuff like that.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: He's still very now, he's not getting caught up on I'm a professional footballer and I'm gonna act like it.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: He's he's a normal kind of humble kind of person, um, but obviously he plays he plays to the the audience as well.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Like that that's part of if you told me that the team we played with in Sunderland, like in League One and stuff, going for the the league, that he was going to be the one that was still gonna be there four or five years later, captain and getting promoted to the Premier League.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: I'd have told you we're crazy.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: No chance, honestly, you're crazy on just pure ability and getting into the team and staying in the team.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: But he stayed there, he worked hard, and to be honest, he's probably the hard hardest player to play against in training.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Like, honestly, you don't want to go near him because he's strong, you run all day, you'll nutmeg him, you go by him, and sure enough, he comes right up beside you, putting pressure on you just constantly.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: He knew what he was good at.
- 21:07SPEAKER_04: It's the same as um when we asked ex-players now when uh sang for Sunderland and and Kevin Ball had been there a lot of years.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: The players who played with them when he first signed for Sunderland would like, if you said to someone we'd be captain in the Premier League, finishing seventh twice, it would never be Kevin Ball.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: But it works and works and works.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: We're gonna touch on academies later, but uh it all struck me, Dylan and Baalley after training they'd be out there.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: Um sorry, what's he Luke O'Neill?
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Luke, Luke after training every day, you you know, on the documentaries and stuff, he's there left foot, right foot, Baalley was the same, so so fair play to them.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: But I want to talk to you a little bit about perception.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: So when Forest Green scored on Saturday, the commentator said Savage has changed the game with his subs.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: And Martin O'Neill yesterday, the same squad who are motoring for.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Line up the league, getting going again.
- 22:02SPEAKER_04: Did he get it wrong then?
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: The first half?
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: Did Savage get it wrong?
- 22:06SPEAKER_04: Savage was getting a lot of praise for changing the game in the second half, but did he get it wrong initially?
- 22:11SPEAKER_04: Martin O'Neill, did he get it wrong?
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: Or do the players take accountability here and say, you know what, we should be doing better against the Carlisle United, we should be getting better against the Kilmarnock and not really having these changes to be made.
- 22:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean I mean Celtic especially, I think when they're 2-0 down, it's like the players have got to take accountability because I think when you look at both squads, they're far superior to them, but it's one of them where when you've got to do something, haven't they?
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: When it comes to half time and the scores not going the ways or the performances and going, they've got to do something.
- 22:50SPEAKER_05: And if they do get a little bit of reaction like Celtic yesterday, they come back and won Forest Green, the game turned on its head even though they only scored one goal.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: So did it turn on its head though, did it?
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: Because because for me watching, there was chances, but they weren't it was it was from the 18 yard box, it was blocked crosses, it was it was blocked shots, it wasn't tearing us open.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: And I've I've the reaction I'm getting is players uh sorry, supporters were like we're sitting back, but also if I was a player, I'd be kind of like, right, we've hit three goals, they're just coming at us, yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: It's the Alamo if we can get we can get a fourth and a fifth here, we've got to buy that time.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but I know that some supporters kind of get a bit worried and say this gonna because yes, if Forrest Green got a second, you're in big trouble.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: As a player, you know what's coming three in away from home, don't you?
- 23:35SPEAKER_05: It's starting the second half.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: You know they have to come at you, so you beat you prepared for it and you're ready.
- 23:39SPEAKER_05: And I thought they dealt with it well, but when they did score, I thought, aye aye, this could be.
- 23:43SPEAKER_05: And there's a couple of moments where they had a couple of chances and and those blocks and those saves, and and I think you've got to give them credit for the other side of the game because they've got they've got the three in a lead, and they've got into the second half with a with that lead, and they thought, right, come and break us down and and and get the get the goals back, and they got one early enough, but they still defended really well.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think obviously the managers needs to change it.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Do you mean Savage needs to change something, and you know they're going to come out in 10-15 minutes and try to get that goal early, which they did.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: And then, as you said, once one goes in, the second usually comes quite quick as well, and then it's panic stations.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: But to be fair, Kaleo, they they stuck by it and they defended well and managed the game.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: I think obviously Gabe put down a few times with cramp or whatever he put down whatever.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: That's so-called cramp.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Twice the game, but it's it's modern day football now, innit?
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: And yeah, they m they managed the game well, and you expect a big reaction, um which they gave them, and they came through it.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: So yeah, and the the Celtic one as well.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: We'll touch on it later with Scottish football, but I think he'd maybe got a team.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: I think Hatati's recently has been so poor, like there's definitely something up there.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: I think maybe at the end of the season you'll find out that maybe he was denied a move or something.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: It's very similar from uh Kyogre last year, where you could see for a few months he wasn't right, and then it comes out that like you get denied a move um somewhere.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: But yeah, again, made made changes.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: Um sometimes it's not even formation, it's just personnel.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: Get people on the pitch.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: The boy Tanetki come on, and right away 1v1s comes inside, whoops in the top corner, and the game just flipped on its head, um, which could have done against Carl.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's the exact same situation, yeah.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but they managed to defend well and stick stick with it.
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: No, two good, two good wins.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: Um Bean has to bring this up.
- 25:27SPEAKER_04: So, because we're talking old things, colour lettered, Tom Pyatech or Pyatic is very well is uh is brought a video out very good again by the media team, the new videos and the stuff they do with as you said, the the bench cam and things like that being fantastic.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: So he's brought out a video just assuring um supporters what they're about, what the plan is, etc.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: Uh, and it's threw up a bit of a debate.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: Um, some people are happy, happy how they've done the cro uh the ground up, happy about the new corporate boxes, which are fantastic.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: We've been an absolutely rent to them.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: Um should the owners be here more as a as a family as a controlling this club, should they be over here and around the ground a little bit more?
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: I can see the argument for both sides.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: I think if if Calais are the top of the league, there's no problem.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: It's the exact same situation, there's no problems.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: They're trusting people here on the ground to do the right things, and even my time there as well, like they've done a lot for the club and they still have and they still will.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: As you said, the changing rooms, the hospitality, the fan zones, everything about takeaway the football on the pitch, everything outside of that I think's been upgraded, and that's due to them.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Um the squad, the budget, everything's competitive, do you know I mean?
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: They're not cutting corners, really.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, I can see the argument that you would want to see them more often, and but obviously that's the way they run their business, do you know what I mean?
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: And um they've obviously got a business in the States which allows them to get involved.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: So yeah, the videos they try I think they they would probably say at the start they were probably too much in vocal all the time, so they've probably took a step back and tried to now kind of see it from a different perspective.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Now they've come out with a video and stuff, which has been good.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I think two things can be right at once.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: I mean I think you you would like as fans to see your owners quite often, do you know what I mean at the games, but you can understand why as well.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Sometimes if it is a wee bit negative and if they turn up for a game or two, you think well there's a pressure on Marcuse, or do you know what I mean?
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Like when they're gonna feel a lot about it.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: Like why are you here now?
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: What's going on in the middle of the city?
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: Well, calling you it doesn't happen without them focusing on the business in in the US, does it, as well?
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: It is, it I think what they've done tremendous off the pitch.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: It's a shame where we are on the pitch.
- 27:57SPEAKER_04: We've had two catastrophic diff relegations.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: I think that's always going to be a stick that can beat them with.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: But at the minute, you know, I was in at that hospitality the other day, you know, that the the the buzz around the club within the staff and directors and and people who work there, the Suzanne Kids, Nigel Clemens, it's good.
- 28:14SPEAKER_04: It's you know, Mark Tierney, it's a good working atmosphere, you can tell that, which is great.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, that I I'm okay with it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: It's a big, big last few months of this season.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: We'll talk about near the end of it, Carlisle again, about where we need them to finish and what it means.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: But yeah, that was just a you know, a few people in, and I can see the debates on the Twitters, the Instagrams and stuff about the videos and should they be here a bit more and should they be doing more fans forums.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: They've put a survey up, so it's up to them.
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: You know, if they look on the collar United website, there's a survey there now and and get your you get your thoughts in for that.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: So you can only do as much as you can do.
- 28:49SPEAKER_05: But like Dylan said, there if they're winning and everything's rosy on the pitch, then people don't really mention them, do they?
- 28:55SPEAKER_05: Um, but the the if if they lose a few games, fans want to vent about things, they're on there, and the owners obviously come into it.
- 29:01SPEAKER_05: But I do agree what they've done off the pitch is it's really impressive.
- 29:05SPEAKER_05: Um, but like it's just a shame what's happened off it, but they're in third position, they've had a good week, so hopefully they can kick on.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: No, as I said, a great atmosphere that Tuesday night.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: The most miserable person at the Tuesday Scunthorpe game, and I'll have to apologise, was me.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: Why?
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: Well, you seen my eyes last week.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: I had some sort of allergic reaction, and I promised I'd go to the game, and you know, when you're looking yourself in the car and going, I can't go in here, it's Tuesday night, it won't be that busy.
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: I'll get in, I'll get away with it.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: First person I see is Millie, second person I see is Helps, then I see Chilts.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: Did they all mention it?
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: Just all came over, and I've had to get out of the way.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: Go, listen, carry on eyes and that.
- 29:42SPEAKER_04: And I think in the end, even Millie's given us a cuddle.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: She knows how down I am about them.
- 29:47SPEAKER_04: So only managed seven plates, seven bulls.
- 29:49SPEAKER_04: You still don't know, the Lumi Burgers weren't on.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: Decent, haven't they?
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, very good.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Right then, so we're moving on.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: So this week we're gonna go into football in general, etc., soon, but we're gonna link it all together.
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: There's a bit to learn about ourselves now, your hosts.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: So, what I want to go through today, lads, is a little bit of our stories from our schoolboy days to our debuts, introducing our path up and down from YTS days, getting into that team, players we may have come against, how hard it was, how easy it might have been, pros we came up against, etc.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: So we'll just crack on, shall we?
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: Do you want to give us a little bit of your skip?
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: Yes, you can.
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: Um I mean, how far back do you want us to go?
- 30:33SPEAKER_05: I want to know how it came about you going to Newcastle United.
- 30:36SPEAKER_05: Um well assigned when I was 14.
- 30:37SPEAKER_05: Um just a local scout called Barry Robinson.
- 30:41SPEAKER_05: Um obviously I'm good mates with his son, and he uh obviously, so he's new as first since I was small and round.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: But he uh What school do you go to?
- 30:50SPEAKER_05: Inglewood junior.
- 30:51SPEAKER_05: Did Halty play with you?
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there was myself, Halty and Paul Reid in the same school team, yeah.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: Great move to Ray just didn't get me happy.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'd I'd uh I had professional careers, so but I mean Well, you got Rido at the back end of his career and the promotion push by get a bear on his back.
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah he's good to be fair.
- 31:08SPEAKER_05: Um but yeah, so obviously I went there at 14 and before that I I went to Carlisle when I was about eight and I was training with the under-twelves.
- 31:17SPEAKER_05: Um and uh when I got to about 13, 14, it was time to decide what I wanted to do.
- 31:23SPEAKER_05: My dad was sort of pushing for me to go on trial at Newcastle, so I went and obviously it went really well.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: But just before that I got offered a I got off a seven-year deal at Carlisle when I was just turned 14.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: So that was obviously two year schoolboy, two-year YTS and three year pro.
- 31:37SPEAKER_05: Who was the manager there at the time?
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: Oh, good question.
- 31:40SPEAKER_05: It was um it was Dave Wilkes who was the obviously in the youth team, and and um my manager was Matt Janssen's dad.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: Oh right.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: Um was a really nice bloke, and they were really putting the pressure on for me to sign for Carlisle, but when I obviously I went to Newcastle and and I signed there, and I still believe it's the best thing I did because obviously the calibre What was it?
- 31:59SPEAKER_04: Was that did you get offered the same deal at Newcastle, the seven?
- 32:03SPEAKER_05: No, no, I got offered a two-year schoolboy and two-year YT.
- 32:06SPEAKER_05: Did that change, didn't it?
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: It did change, yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: Um so obviously, remember when you split for your county.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: I don't know if it's the same in Scotland, but obviously I played for Cumbria, and then we played for Northumberland.
- 32:16SPEAKER_05: Um Northumberland players were always massive, like big units, well not you, but they're all units.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: So anyway, we we we played Manchester schools.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: We thought you were big hands off the farms and that.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: We played Manchester schools just before I left school.
- 32:32SPEAKER_05: Um obviously I played really well in the game, and Manchester United scouts approached my dad, and he just said, Look, my dad's well, he's just about to go to Newcastle, sort of thing.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: So my dad played it well to be fair.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: He rang, I think it was JC, John Carver.
- 32:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, just to let you know, by the way, United have been on the phone.
- 32:54SPEAKER_05: He did, he rang, and he went, uh just Man United have approached the boy.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: Well, they started panicking a bit.
- 33:00SPEAKER_05: Don't do anything, don't do anything, we'll ring you back.
- 33:02SPEAKER_05: So the next day, it was obviously the house phone, isn't it?
- 33:05SPEAKER_05: The house phone's ringing.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: Um my dad answered it, it's a big smile on his face, and he's like, You haven't got a two-year YTS, no, you've got a year's pro, uh, a year's YTS and three years pro, they've offered you it.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: Um, you've just got to negotiate your money, but they want to give you the big sign and on fee and all this.
- 33:21SPEAKER_05: So my dad played agent for me.
- 33:23SPEAKER_04: All from an absolute lap, where am I new?
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: Shout out just went, what's he up with?
- 33:26SPEAKER_05: He's had a good game.
- 33:27SPEAKER_05: Your boy's decent.
- 33:27SPEAKER_05: I think that was it.
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: Your boy's decent, that was it.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: Your uncle was there, where you drag it on.
- 33:31SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I um obviously that that that worked out.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: But when you uh when you went as a YTS, you turned pro on your 17th birthday, didn't you?
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: So did whenever you Well, if you got offered it.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: If you got offered it, yeah.
- 33:41SPEAKER_05: So I started YTS in the July of the pre-season, and my birthday's in October.
- 33:46SPEAKER_05: So I got the big signing on fee and the big wages at 17.
- 33:50SPEAKER_05: Did you have to still do the jobs?
- 33:51SPEAKER_05: Yes, yeah, you did.
- 33:52SPEAKER_05: Um there was like myself, Gary Caldwell, Brian Kerr, the lads come down from Scotland, and the Irish lads, um obviously all clubs wanted them.
- 34:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so when we all turned 17, and I don't think it was a good thing because there's such a big divide in money um with the local lads who are on the YTS money, and you've got lads on common over fortune getting signed, buying nice cars, and they're going to train them back in minibuses.
- 34:15SPEAKER_05: And I I it I mean, obviously, it didn't bother me because I was one of the ones on the big money, but it's it's not right when you look back and think about it, um, and it got mentioned a lot.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: Um you think that's really been capped?
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, 100%.
- 34:28SPEAKER_05: Especially at that age as well.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: Especially, I mean the sign-on fees I got was money I'dn't I I've never had before, and the wages I got, and it didn't do me any favours.
- 34:36SPEAKER_05: Well, we've heard back in the city.
- 34:39SPEAKER_05: It didn't do me any f it didn't do me any favours.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: And why 'cause you sort of think me, I thought I'd made it.
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: I thought I'd made it, and I was 17, I was in the youth team, and I hadn't, I was a million miles off making it anywhere.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: That's one of my big things, I think, when I've come down to England, and I see obviously the money's better in England and stuff like that, a lot of bigger clubs, but when it's Scotland, like a lot of the kind of YTS and their own pennies, yeah, they're on pennies until and then it's almost like once you make it there, that's when you start making money.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: So the the grit is like determined.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: But then we would play with Scotland, they'll play against like England and stuff, and you're hearing about Liverpool spent four million on this boy, he's on 15 grand a week, he's on 10 grand.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Like from 16, 17, 18 year olds, and you're thinking, What is that?
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: Obviously, if you've got a good head on you, then you use it wisely.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: But it's very easy at that age to to lose that kind of focus, to lose that determination.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: You think, Well, I've made it now, that's me.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: Well, I didn't, I sort of didn't listen.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: Um obviously my my mum and dad, and they were sort of saying, Look, what are you doing with your money?
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: And I was they sort of left me alone with it, and because they sort of trusted me to do the right things, but I never I was a I was a bit of a spender, um, I got I got a nice card and stuff like that.
- 35:46SPEAKER_05: And I just remember Gary Caldwell, um, he was the same age as me, and he sort of turned pro at the same time, but he didn't change at all.
- 35:54SPEAKER_05: Now look at the career he had.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he was so focused, he'd done extra.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: I never done extra, I went home, I was showing fills and horses, you know what I mean.
- 36:00SPEAKER_05: I didn't in the afternoons I was I was just yeah, sleeping, just having the easy life, easy life weekends, always going home, always going out, just making the wrong decisions.
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: Now I'm 44, I can't go back and be 17 again.
- 36:13SPEAKER_05: But you can try and help people who are coming up and through and getting these sort of like deals, and you think you look and I think they're a lot better advised now.
- 36:22SPEAKER_05: They've got advice left, right, and centre.
- 36:24SPEAKER_05: I don't even think they'll get the hands on the money.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: My money just literally went into my bank.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: I think clubs are more wise now, aren't they?
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: Even as you said, yeah, PFA get involved with a lot of talks and stuff at a young age, and then the clubs are actually probably working with the parents to be like, right, yeah, this is where the goals is like, definitely the agency as well.
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: Danny Graham's got um the Miley lads, yeah, and uh, he gets a percentage of his wage, it goes the rest goes into like a pot, which is perfect, as right it's right, yeah.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: But uh where did you stay in Newcastle?
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: First of all, I stayed in the Grove Hotel.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: So then let me tell you about this, right?
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: So I was a YT, a couple of getters above.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: So the Grove was already going, so we'd all go to college on a Thursday.
- 37:04SPEAKER_04: So Newcastle and Middlesbrough, Hartleypool, Dalton.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: We all went down to Middlesbrough and we jumped on this coach.
- 37:09SPEAKER_04: So we're coming from the hostel at um or homes with our mum and dads, and the Newcastle lads get on the and it's a Thursday, and they've been out on the Wednesday night because they're just living in a hotel, no one looking after them, was there?
- 37:21SPEAKER_05: No, nobody, just a hotel in the centre of Newcastle.
- 37:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was about a mile from the ground, and it was just carnage, it was, it was just like there's Irish, Scottish, there was myself, there's lads from Manchester, Liverpool, and we just got up to no good.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um it was good fun, mind.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: Don't get us wrong, it was a right laugh, but there was just some wrongins in in there, and yeah, I mean you had to be very, very, very disciplined um living in there if you wanted to sort of kick on and do anything.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: And remember Aaron Hughes lived there, but he soon got out.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: Um, because he was in the first team early 16, 16.
- 37:55SPEAKER_04: We he turned up at college and he was sponsored by a rover.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and he had a rover very, very quickly, and he was playing I think he was that he was in the squad for Barcelona away or something like that.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: That was his first day with Barcelona away.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: So see, you said he got out and went some.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: Do you think he done that for his own bat, or did he have someone with some sort of football knowledge?
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: He was a very, very sensible lad.
- 38:16SPEAKER_05: He had his head screwed on him, the Caldwell brothers, Brian Kerr, them boys were I don't know if it was come from advice or just from within themselves.
- 38:24SPEAKER_05: Um, but Gary and Stevie Caldwell, especially, they're so disciplined and in everything they'd done, they always done extra.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: And I was remember you just got called busy, didn't you?
- 38:31SPEAKER_05: Aye, yeah.
- 38:31SPEAKER_05: What are you doing?
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: That's busy staying round back in the afternoon.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: And you know what?
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: It's bloody hard in the dressing room of kids to be called busy and not and keep being busy and not cave in and say, I won't do it.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: If we took a bag of balls out of Sunland and I wanted to go and practice my left foot, Sam Easton, Darren Holloway, Paul Thurwell, Johnny Oster, Danny District, you busy twat.
- 38:52SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: And I just go you doing?
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: I'm actually just pumping them up out of it.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: Just keep them back in.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: You know what I'll have a crap left foot for life because I don't want these calling us busy.
- 39:02SPEAKER_04: It's mad.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: You can get the night out, you can get it tucked in.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: And as much as it's a team sport, especially at the ages, it's an individual sport.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: Like you're there fighting for yourself yourself, haven't you?
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: Your own profile.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Because how how many players did you play with in that team that have gone on?
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: Obviously, you've named a couple there, but like no lot of players go on and play.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: Do you know that they probably should have a lot of them fall away and then there's an excuse after excuse, but it's like, well, the work was ruined back then, do you mean when you were kind of I mean it's different for me.
- 39:32SPEAKER_05: Used to you got your debut, and so did you, but I never.
- 39:36SPEAKER_05: And I realised at about between 17 and 18, and this is hand on heart, I never ever thought I was gonna play for Newcastle.
- 39:43SPEAKER_05: I didn't, I just didn't think I was when I used to look at like so Rob Lee and Gary Speed and Kieran Dyer, I thought, I ain't as good as them.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: And but I still had I I had contract years left of my contract, so I didn't know how it was going to play out.
- 39:57SPEAKER_05: Um and then it got to like my last year, and you're training with the first team every day, but you're just a number, you're just on the other number, yeah, making the numbers up, or you're in the wall, or something like that.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: You're getting ball smashed at you on a Friday.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: In the wall, yeah.
- 40:09SPEAKER_04: And sometimes there was like yeah, sometimes like there was like four or five of us.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: When they're doing defending set players, you've got a good whip on your you come and curl the corner and thinking this corner might get us in the fire, you know.
- 40:18SPEAKER_05: But then you hit the first man twice and you've got them screaming.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: Lenny used to do that, and he used to be like I'm not joking.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: Um Slainey, Paul Slane talked about this.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: Lenny had them doing that when he was Lennon had him doing it, and he speaks about it on the podcast.
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: Um today he was making it was that bad they kept hitting the first man that he he told him to bring it into the edge of the 18-yard box.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's right, yeah.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: He's literally just like like dinking it into the boxes so boys could edit.
- 40:41SPEAKER_05: They used to do 11 against 11 on a Friday, and sometimes you never even got in the second 11.
- 40:45SPEAKER_05: So there'd be like three or four of us in the corner with Tommy Craig playing tutor.
- 40:49SPEAKER_05: That's when Arnie Run is time for me.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: And I'm thinking, what am I doing?
- 40:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_05: So when I went, but I've got a story about when I got released off Bobby Robson.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: So we had appointments with him.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: So Olivia Bernard, remember in the left back, he was before me.
- 41:02SPEAKER_05: So we passed each other on the stairs, and uh I've went up.
- 41:08SPEAKER_05: Bobby Robson's in his bare feet in his tra in his training gear.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: Remember them little putting machines where he used to put them in and spit it out?
- 41:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's lining a put-up in the office.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: So I've knocked on the door, he's like, one minute.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: So he's lining this put up.
- 41:20SPEAKER_05: I'm thinking, if he makes this put, I might get another, I might get another year.
- 41:24SPEAKER_05: And he's only missed it, hasn't he?
- 41:25SPEAKER_05: Go get it from and all that.
- 41:27SPEAKER_05: So he sat me down, he's like, Listen, ability, no problem.
- 41:30SPEAKER_05: He said everything else, not for this level.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: He said, But I'm gonna help you get a club.
- 41:35SPEAKER_05: And I thought, he's just saying that.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but he rang Brian Horton on my behalf.
- 41:39SPEAKER_05: Now he didn't have to do that because I'm I'm no use to him, never was, and I was getting released.
- 41:44SPEAKER_05: But he rang him on my behalf and said, Look, I'm gonna send him to you next week because you've got a reserve team game against Birmingham.
- 41:51SPEAKER_05: I think you should definitely have a look at him.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: Went down and then I got a deal.
- 41:55SPEAKER_05: And that was all for from him ringing Brian Horton.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: You've obviously seen something in you.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he wouldn't have done it for everyone, yeah.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: He probably knew that you were like a good kid, do you know what I mean?
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: And say maybe getting with a couple of boys and doing as you said, like maybe going out and doing stuff or no doing extra and stuff, but there was ability there and like a good person that you wanted to help, do you know what I mean?
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: And if you could just if we could just click, yeah, then they'd be a good player, do you know what I mean?
- 42:17SPEAKER_05: But the what I mean, one last thing before we move on to you two is when you get released, you do think it's the end of the world, but it's not, it's not, it's just another you're just on to the next chapter of your career, yeah.
- 42:29SPEAKER_05: And I'd like I I mean you I don't know who listens to this, but I worry about kids between the age of 14 and 16 now, and I think I worry about them because of social media, because that they get that built up, yeah, and when they don't get what they want or they do get released, the world comes crashing down, yeah.
- 42:47SPEAKER_05: And what's there for them?
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: And I just want them to know that it's not the end of the world getting released.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: Charlie Austen's just done one, hasn't he?
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: Charlie Austen's went virally.
- 42:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, see him fuming about Pet, he's going, he made it at 23.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: I remember.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: So this is the thing with Academies.
- 43:00SPEAKER_04: How many times have I been in the dressing room?
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: I would say four times.
- 43:03SPEAKER_04: I said, Kevin Kyle, seeing Gary Medine, let's just take them too.
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so Kevin Kyle comes into Sunderland, right?
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: And his touch isn't great.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: He in keep ball, you won't want him in your team.
- 43:13SPEAKER_04: But then you realise, don't you, football's played by different shapes and sizes.
- 43:17SPEAKER_04: Peter Reed went, we'll get his touch better, but we how do we play?
- 43:21SPEAKER_04: We get it forward, we get it in the box.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: We need someone like that.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: We don't want all these football players, and he's made it a 21-22.
- 43:29SPEAKER_04: Gary Medine, you go through this academy, all these lads who've done the same thing, same coaching.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: Neil MacDonald brings Gary Medine in.
- 43:36SPEAKER_04: Why'd you bring him in Gaffa?
- 43:37SPEAKER_04: Because he's different.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: So you've got a chance at any time, any level.
- 43:41SPEAKER_04: And the the the biggest one's Jamie Vardy, isn't it?
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: He just comes from absolutely nowhere.
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: Played against him, you know, for working at Halifax.
- 43:47SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, he was different level.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: Oh, he was only conference north, but was he different levels because of his pace, or was he his touch good?
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: His movement and his pace, and just new and just determination, just everything.
- 43:59SPEAKER_05: Nothing to do with.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: You just knew you just thought obviously you can hit the you can hit the back of it.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: I'll tell you what I'll I'll quickly do a question from Daz Gaffney.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: No Daz.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: Why are no kids coming through now in Premier League?
- 44:11SPEAKER_04: We know it's a money thing, but even at Carlisle, is it the coaching, not good enough coaching?
- 44:15SPEAKER_04: Or in lower leagues, the academy should be prioritised.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: So yeah, it's hard, isn't it?
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: Um I had a little spill, obviously, when I got injured at the last year in Kaleo, and I was doing a bit with Butchery up with the sometimes eighteens, and then even the last few months before I signed with Balomina, I was doing the under 13s with Kaleo, which was great.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: Um I'm really glad that they got me up.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: They knew I was doing my badges and stuff, so it was great for me, great for the kids.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: But I think the You can kind of it seems like we seem like dinosaurs a little bit when you talk about like oh back in my day and all this kind of stuff, but it generally was like yeah, kind of YTS and the youth teams was it was proper apprenticeships, do you know what I mean?
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Like they they put you through it.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: It wasn't like it was tough to get it.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: It wasn't easy going, was it not at all?
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: And if you did come at the end of it, you were you were a better person, a better player, a better person for it because you'd been through that and you kind of realised that this is what it takes to get to the sort of levels.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: When I asked something about the boots when I was in Carlisle youth uh the youth teams, uh this was with the 18, that they're not allowed to like clean boots now anymore.
- 45:21SPEAKER_03: It's like something like Carlisle.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: I it's like a thing where like I don't know if it's like a PFA thing or something to do with like working standards, but they're not allowed to like go take your boots and wash them and make sure they're clean for the first team players, which that was like a staple when growing up.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: And it was actually like used to be to you like that.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: Do you mean like you had a first team player, say you're Barry Ferguson or something, the captain of the Rangers when I was a youth player?
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: Say you had him, like obviously you were you were shitting at a bit, but you almost felt like part of something.
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: Do you mean like you're cleaning his boots?
- 45:51SPEAKER_03: Do you know?
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: And you you want to get there one day.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: Do you mean he's a midfielder?
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: Like, that's where I want to be.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: And you had like kit men like Jimmy Bell who was pointing in the direction, going, Well, this is what this is what it takes to get to that level.
- 46:02SPEAKER_03: We we people get good pros, don't you?
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: You get you look at it as hard too rubbish, well, not two youngins, first year pros, so they're not tipping you 300, are they?
- 46:12SPEAKER_04: Tipping us 20 quid and 25 quid.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: I think I had did I have Rob Lee's Diodorus?
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: I I can't remember he was on Darren Peacock's, but they were massive World Cup so they must have told some cleaning the biggest feat I've ever seen.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: The best ones for me, David Kelly.
- 46:28SPEAKER_04: We had to rip so he he was sponsored by Adidas, but he had Puma, so we had to rip the Puma off.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: We had to glue the Adidas World Cup sign on.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: Do you know Gary Hooper used to wear a new pair of boots every game?
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: I couldn't do that.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: His his boot boy would have been sound, he would have got a new pair of boots every week because honestly, he didn't have to clean them.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: He we're all sponsored by Nike by that point, the Celtic, and honestly, it was like a superstition.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: He had he used to get a haircut every Friday and watch him through his full credit selfie, he's hurt like not one hair out of place.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: It's the exact same for about four years.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Every Friday he used to go get a haircut, and the Saturday he would bring it in the butt he could have couldn't go now seeing the price of haircuts now.
- 47:03SPEAKER_04: Not just a daft tenor anything.
- 47:04SPEAKER_04: That's why I'm growing mate.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: Before we go into yours, Dylan, just a quick one.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: This was if you could start now, right now, would you go to a big hitter, get the best coaching, or would you start at like a Carlisle and get in the team and try and make your way now?
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Looking back.
- 47:21SPEAKER_05: My answer to that is I would still do what I'd done because of the education I got.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: Um I got Alan Irvine was moved team manager, and then I moved on to Tommy Craig, and I just felt that I learned so much off them.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: Um but at the same time I knew from quite early that I wasn't I believed that I wasn't gonna make it there.
- 47:42SPEAKER_05: Um so I was just sort of waiting to move on, which isn't great, but like I said, like I've told you in previous episodes, I never got a loan move.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: I just went from uh reserve team football right to Balkville.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it's hard because I was fortunate enough to come through, Celtic and Rangers um youth team, so the best like in Scotland there.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: So I was always kind of the best at my age at that group, even getting Scot like the Scotland youth teams right through.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: So I feel like it done me good because I got as you said, all the education working under Walter Smith's Neil Lennon's and playing with all these players and getting to see them on a daily basis, even your Simon Ferries and all these kind of boys that were just McGees and stuff a couple years ahead.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: So um Cal McGregor was out also in my my youth team as well.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: So I feel that I was fortunate that way to come through, but only if you're kind of if you're in the top two or three, maybe like me, Cal McGregor, I think probably the only ones that went on to play like at the top of Scotland, yeah.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, from that kind of Celtic youth days.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know if my Rangers team there's any even any that went like right to the top.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: So and then in the other bot you've got I played with John McGinn at Hibbs where he came through at St.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: Murr, kind of obviously a good club, but not as big as Celtic and Rangers came through.
- 49:02SPEAKER_03: But when he turned 17, 18, or maybe even 16, he got the chance to be involved with the first team, whereas I didn't until I was a bit later.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: Um so the fact that he was playing earlier, growing, maturing, and then obviously the rest is history, what he eventually went on and done after Hibbs and um down at Villa.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: So yeah, he he went the other route where he wasn't in it, the big massive clubs and getting the best education, but it served him well for eventually later on in life when he's he's kicked on.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's completely tough one, isn't it?
- 49:33SPEAKER_04: Um I would probably I think I'll just the the best one to tell is the Dean Saunders story, isn't it?
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: Dean Saunders' son was a crew, he's like 16, 17, banging in the goals in the youth team, and Tottenham offered him a deal which made he made a million pounds over five years.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: So Dean Saunders said, What do you want to do?
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: Like you've got this chance, even if you don't make it to Tottenham to get some money behind you, buy a house or whatever, secure a bit of your future, or do you take your chance of playing for crew, getting in the first team, which you will in a couple of months, and then getting a move when you've done like a hundred games?
- 50:09SPEAKER_04: So decided to stay, and about three months later, I think he ripped his Achilles, then he was on trial at Barrow literally a year later.
- 50:15SPEAKER_04: So Dean Saunders is like, why didn't I push him to go down and take that money?
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's a tough one.
- 50:22SPEAKER_03: I don't think there's a right answer.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: It's just not your own path in it, and you just try and navigate this way through.
- 50:27SPEAKER_04: Great question from Daz, who's very into youth team football around here, good coach as well.
- 50:32SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, didn't it just through yours, your choices of why you chose where you did and and how was it?
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: So my oldest brother um is three years older than me.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: He he was at Celtic um youth team, like through the development stage.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: So when he was always the training, I was kinda kicking the ball about the side of the pitch, as you do, a young kid.
- 50:54SPEAKER_03: Um and they just they basically just seen me, they knew obviously the family and stuff, and they seen me the way I was running about with the ball and said get him up like to the development stage.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: So I'd done that for a few years uh down at May Hill in Glasgow, and I think they just kind of kept me there until I was old enough to get into the kind of the team, so it was just a development phase, and then I can't remember maybe under tens or elevens or whatever it was, then they they they formed a kind of team that was go play seven asides and eventually eleven aside.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: So I'd done a few years of that.
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: Um what happens a few years later?
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: My oldest brother went in full time with Celtic, had a tough time with the coaches at the time, didn't enjoy it, really didn't really want to go to train in the morning and stuff like that I wouldn't say bullying, but he he felt like that at the at the stage that he was getting bullied a little bit and he wasn't one of the better players and he just kind of didn't want to be there.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: So the family, my dad and stuff made the decision to move him on and go somewhere else.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: Um, but what happened off the back of that was I was going to be leaving as well, which um was disappointing for Celtic.
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: My mum still had um like voicemails from like Tommy Burns and stuff, phoning in the house, being like we understand Darren's situation, but don't take it out on Dylan and stuff like that.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: He loves it here and how well we thought of him, which was amazing for him to like phone up and try to fight for me as well.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: So, but my dad obviously had that against him with his son that he didn't want me to eventually go work with the same kind of coaches.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: So Rangers for a year or two were always asking a question, would they ever come?
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: So once once I was moving on, it was a no-brainer.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: They they were right on the phone, and before you know it, I'm at Murray Park, um, which anybody that knows me and my family are big Celtic fans, like big Celtic fans, um, especially my dad.
- 52:38SPEAKER_03: So that when the news broke, did the kind of family and stuff that I was I was at Murray Park and it was it wasn't great to say lightly, but my dad wouldn't let my mum put the see what my training kit and stuff.
- 52:50SPEAKER_03: See if she washed it, she wouldn't let him he wouldn't let her put the stuff out the booth line out the back garden, yeah.
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: He was like, Don't put that outside, leave it in the like the radiators and stuff, and then that will get me a tumbler driver than a top one, yeah.
- 53:03SPEAKER_03: But um so that's that's where he's at, so yeah.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: But honestly, and I've said this countless times in my career, like I love my time at Rangers, absolutely loved it.
- 53:10SPEAKER_04: I could have signed for Rangers, could you?
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: Should have signed for Rangers, to be honest.
- 53:14SPEAKER_04: Went up when I was 13, flew us up.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: Um, Barry Ferguson was a couple of years above, so he was in the same hotel.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was and made a ridiculous mistake, didn't I?
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: First night, Protestant, a Catholic, I'm Catholic.
- 53:28SPEAKER_04: Did you?
- 53:29unknown: Oh fuck.
- 53:30SPEAKER_04: As I've said a few times, ginger hair, side parting, skinny as a rake, fixed brace, top and bottom.
- 53:37SPEAKER_04: Just come on, bullies.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: Here we go.
- 53:39SPEAKER_04: And I done well, done very well, and it was funny.
- 53:41SPEAKER_04: A couple of years later, ran into Barry again, and that well, four or five years later, played against them in that Ian Ferguson testimony, clocked us, and uh, we kept in touch a little bit.
- 53:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was it was intense, yeah, intense and good players.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: I thought it was I felt there were better players.
- 53:56SPEAKER_04: I'd been on trial a couple of places in England.
- 53:58SPEAKER_04: I thought were better players in Scotland.
- 54:00SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 54:00SPEAKER_04: I felt they wanted it more.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: That was a proper club, like I know obviously they're good teams in that now, but back then it was like proper men.
- 54:08SPEAKER_04: We were allowed to walk around every day, high rocks, and I'd say Durant and Gas and that's class.
- 54:13SPEAKER_03: Durant is class, um but yeah, so my time at Rangers, I loved it, even though obviously growing up a Celtic fan, they treated me so well.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: I was I went full time there, um, done my apprenticeship and stuff.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: They fought really high love me.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: I was up playing my reserves now and then.
- 54:27SPEAKER_03: What you did your apprenticeship at Rangers.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: Did you?
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was like, I thought you left Rangers.
- 54:31SPEAKER_03: No, I went full time.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: I went full time for three years.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: So I left full.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: What age is that?
- 54:36SPEAKER_03: So I went full technically, I was at full time at 15.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: Um they they had to have meetings with the school and stuff.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: I wasn't that's what they were gonna do with me.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: I was gonna go up 15.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: So I wasn't um applying myself as I should at school, and it was a decision like better and I went back to school one day a week and I was at uh my part the rest of the week.
- 54:56SPEAKER_03: So yeah, loved it.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: Um they really treated me well, as I said, played the reserve football and round about all these John Fleck was just coming on the scene and boys were getting chances.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: And I I could tell that I was always kind of if they needed a few players, I was always maybe the second choice or the third choice to go up with the first team.
- 55:15SPEAKER_03: So I knew that I was kind of getting there, even what fast forward a year or two, I was like 17.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: Um But what happened is I remember one morning my dad um said to me, He was like, You know your contract's running out in June.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: And because I'd been doing so well and I was enjoying it that much, but we didn't really think about it to be honest.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: Like we just kind of knew that we weren't worried, we just knew that we're gonna sign on again.
- 55:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: So what happens?
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: I speak to the Rangers and they were like, Oh yeah, yeah, we'll sit down and we'll get it sorted, like, no problem.
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: So fast forward a few a few weeks, and then I'm into the last six months of my contract, and what happens is we played Celtic at my um uh Battlefield, and Neil Lenny just took over the couple of months before.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: Gary Parker was the assistant, and they two were at the game, um, done really well, scored a goal, didn't celebrate, which I think Lenny loved it.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so but Water Smith and that and others, so scored the goal, um and then the next day called up to train me the first team with Rangers, and I remember we were doing the stretching and stuff.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: Durante comes over, the boss wants you, so I'm over, standing beside Water Smith, Durant, um, and Alan McCoy.
- 56:25SPEAKER_03: Kenny McDowell as well.
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: Do you know celebrate for yesterday?
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: How'd you done well?
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Oh, just my team in it and all that, and like next time you score against them, you celebrate, like kind of laughing and left it at that.
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: But obviously, um, so Celtic got on the phone and then just a quick one there.
- 56:40SPEAKER_04: We'll go on to my time next week.
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: But isn't it mental how you reach school one day?
- 56:46SPEAKER_04: And from my time, I was at school, and three months later I was sat in a dressing room with Chris Waddell, Chris Woods, Tony Corton, Paul Stewart, all England internationals, and I've literally left school three months ago.
- 56:58SPEAKER_04: And you're not even left school, but you're standing with interhand and that's it.
- 57:02SPEAKER_03: Like it's funny because just talk about the school.
- 57:05SPEAKER_03: Like, I d I wasn't great at school, I didn't really pay attention and all the homework stuff and whatever.
- 57:10SPEAKER_03: I just looking back, it's naive and it's silly.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: I would never advise us like kids now, or even my own kids, like get your education, like that's that's first.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: But I was in the mindset of I'm I'm gonna be a footballer 100%.
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: And I used to argue with teachers.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: I used to argue with teachers all the time about it.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: They'd be like, You need to concentrate.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Well, I'm that like I've already been offered this deal and now acting Billy Big Balls, but um it eventually worked out, but I wouldn't advise it.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: And and I remember the headmaster at the time was kind of on me all the time, do you know what I mean?
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: Especially when I was at school.
- 57:41SPEAKER_03: Well, you said you won't make it no, just like on me all the time, and I like just thought I was a little bit of an arse, do you know what I mean?
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: But and then what happens is Rangers want to take me out early, and John Gregg comes up to the school, and he's uh he's a blue nose, isn't he?
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: So next minute the school, the corridors are all getting swept and stuff like that.
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: They now all the fancy cutlies out, the teas, coffees, and all that, he's got his nice royal blue tag on it, and before you know it, he's got his arm round me, oh Dylan's this, Dylan's that absolute like all of them tickets in that top of it.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Um so I he he treated me really well after that, but um, yeah, just you're you're you're a young kid, don't I mean?
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: You just want to be a footballer, and then next minute you're you're standing with your Watersmiths, McCoist, and Ian Durant.
- 58:23SPEAKER_04: So how so how did the Celtic come about then?
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: Just so I've kind of skimmed through it, but basically after that game, Celtic took interest straight away.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: And Gary Parker was a big one on that.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: He he he was a technical player, and he could say, and I know we touched on it a couple weeks back, but um he was the one that was like we need to go sing this kid, do you know what I mean?
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: 17-year-old, and especially in the games, the Celtic Rangers youth team like smashing into tackles and streetwise, do you know what I mean?
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: That where I was brought up and stuff.
- 58:47SPEAKER_03: So they were on the phone and they wanted my parents to go over to Parkhead.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: I by this point I could talk to talk to clubs.
- 58:53SPEAKER_03: Rangers were desperate to get me in to get it signed, and I was stalling a little bit, and then they wanted to come over to Celtic Park to talk to them.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: But my mum's kind of well, my dad barred her for go to the games when I was younger because she just used to like scream at the side of the pitch, yeah.
- 59:08SPEAKER_03: Like, just couldn't couldn't take it, gets very nervous and all that.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: And so she was like, No, no way, I'm not gonna over to sit in front of Peter Lowell and Neil Lennon's and stuff, no way.
- 59:18SPEAKER_03: So they said, Well, we'll come to you, we'll come to the house.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: So Neil Lennon came came uh came to Milton where I'm from and um bit of that hoover was on, the hot point I was on.
- 59:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my mum is pranking.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: Like the neighbours were in helping cleaning up and that it was like proper.
- 59:33SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, I remember it.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: Oh obviously the young team up the end of the whole street end up knowing like where you're from, everybody knows your business, do you mean?
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: And they all knew they were coming, so big fancy black toot Range Rover comes in the street and down it comes, and everybody's all standing outside.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: Honestly, they're all standing outside and that like Chat Ig Lent Neil Lenny coming in, Peter Lowell and stuff coming out.
- 59:52SPEAKER_05: You have a dog call, Lenny.
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that's that's so that's the same kind of story.
- 59:56SPEAKER_03: So we sit for like an hour having a tea and coffee, talking about me and how much they want me to come, and um but to be honest, see, until that night I was I was staying.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: I was staying, man.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_03: I honestly I loved it.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_03: Well, even when they were there, I even when they were there, until they started speaking, even when I knew they were interested, they're coming to the house.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_03: I was almost like giving courtesy of but my agent was like, I thought he was gonna say up until the dog jumped on Lenny Plat We're getting an extra yeah.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: I could have killed the deal with it.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_03: I don't know how Lenny would have taken that the dog on uh Neil, but um no honestly I I I love my time at Rangers and I I the people there and the the coaches and the the players and stuff like I loved it.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: I I thought in the next year or two I'm definitely gonna be chapping at the door.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_03: Um but and then once I started speaking, it was a different story.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_03: Like Neil Lennon's saying like you come straight into the first team dressing room, you have your own place, like the big now the ducits in this dressing room and stuff, and um you'll be you'll be in every squad, like you'll either be on the bench, you're travel, or you'll be playing, like you're you're involved, like you're a first team player, like we're not gonna be around.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_04: How old were you then?
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_03: I was seven uh I scored my first goal 18.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: I think I was 17, turning 18, or I just turned 18, I was I was really young.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_03: So because I'm watching the games like the night before, do you know what I mean?
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Like your Scott Brown's and all these kind of boys, like Gary Hoopers and Samaras, and so to tell me that I'm thinking, right, my head's gone here.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_03: So anyway, we sit and go through it all, and then I'll leave.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_03: And they started speaking about all the logistics and stuff, my agent, and how it would look like, and then kind of what summed it up at the end was it was like, Oh, by the way, the dog, we've got a dog out the back garden, you want to meet him?
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: Big big ginger bulldog.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_03: Lenny, I'll get a picture, right?
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_03: And we'll we'll put it up, we'll put it up on the uh on the socials.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: I'll get a picture of it.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: Lenny Bulldog, American Bulldog, absolute tank, ginger called Lenny.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: He told that story on awful god.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_03: I was appreciated with my quality of that.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_03: So um but he took it well, yeah, the dogs in meeting everybody, and yeah, signed like a five-year dealer after you.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, five year deal.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: And then your debut came.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: So my debut came um so when I went after the summer, I'd done a pre-season stuff.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_03: Um I was recovering from my metal tarso, so I was about six weeks out, and then the first game I was on the bench a few times and I was itching my dad and that were going to all the games like thinking I was gonna go on, and they were really, really close games, so he never really threw me on.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_03: And then we played Motherwell away, 2-1, and it was the last couple of minutes, and he he shouted me up, so yeah, boom, all my family's all.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_04: Jenny legs are just fine.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_03: No, actually, I was alright.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_03: I was alright.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_03: I was I was I was confident.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously I was a bit nervous and stuff, but more about the kind of like oh I'll make my debut.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_03: But actually, I I always thought just give me the ball.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_03: Once the ball's at my feet, I'd I'll know what to do.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'll be all right.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: Like the more I think about it, the more I just once once I take a touch up the thing.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_03: But that was that was only a few minutes, and then my home debut comes comes a few weeks after, um, which obviously we spoke about with the goal.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: Um, we went three or four up early doors, and I'm doing star jumps and fucking.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: Did you get much publicity after that game?
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_03: The first one I got the goal all over you.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_03: That's when it changed.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's when it changed for me.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_03: Like nothing really changed up until then, apart from like your immediate family, like a base buzzing and stuff.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: Like, but they got a dog called Mourinho ready for the next meeting.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: But yeah, like nothing changed that much.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: Like, and my family were good that way, like they kept me grounded, I mean really, really grounded, and I wasn't getting carried away.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_03: I just lived my life normal, and then it was more the media side once once they scored the goal, and it was eventually one goal the season, and all this kind of thing.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_03: It was like right then the next one the kid because James Forrest the year or two before and the McGee's all this.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_03: Now you were getting kind of spoke about like that.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_03: So um I think like a week later I got called up to Scotland under 21.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_03: So there was this big push, which was which was good, but it was a big change for me where you go into your kind of restaurants and stuff, and you see people elbowing each other, going, That's that wee guy.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_03: Like getting recognised and stuff to deal with that.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_03: Don't get me wrong, it was all positive, like it was never any negative, even from Rangers fans, never.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_03: But even to to have to think like a wee bit anxiety sometimes when you kind of go places and you see like people looking at you and you you're like and my my misses used to kind of help like stop stop acting like that, do you know what I mean?
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_03: Like because she could see that I was just kind of like just not really acting myself, just kind of like focused and not trying to make an arse of myself or something, do you know what I mean?
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_03: Like just kind of being quiet.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_04: This is what you should have done, the Warwick Chippy skip from Newcastle United.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_04: I have two in the back.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_04: I got one eye shut.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: So that's that's two pathways, both a little bit different, isn't it?
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, it's a we'll do mine next week because we've got a bit more to talk about, but it's just fascinating, isn't it?
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_04: And it's probably fascinating for players, parents, and that to listen to these sort of things because there's so much you've got to weigh up.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_04: It's not just choosing the club, is it?
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_04: It's about what comes with it.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_04: But there are players who just are people who choose a club for who they are.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_04: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it's good for people listening to get a little bit of insight.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_04: So we'll quickly go on to well, we're not quickly going, but we'll go into football in general, and uh just a quick one for you, Dylan.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_04: Harvey Barnes, obviously he's playing for Newcastle United and doing very, very well.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_04: Just committed himself to England.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_04: He's got one cap but in a friendly for me.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_04: Is he gonna be in the England squad?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_04: Ask yours about that.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_04: Would he have gotten the Scotland squad?
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_04: I don't know, so that's what I was gonna put it.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, I think he would have gotten and I get the argument both sides because the squad that's been there and Steve Scott's he's built that kind of like a team kind of mentality.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: He's kept the same.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_04: Has he done a South Gate and made it like a club environment?
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_04: Scott's gonna be able to get it.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think I think Steve's I think you can obviously I speak to uh John McGinn a bit and he when he speaks about that you can tell like they're all They're all pals, do you know what I mean?
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_03: Like, there's not really a lot of changes every squad, maybe one or two with injuries or whatever, but there's that kind of when they meet up, it's like this is your team, do you know what I mean?
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_03: This is it.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_03: So I think you can see that with the results they've got.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_03: I get the argument that if he's coming in and it's taking someone's space who's been there for the last three, four years building towards this.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_03: How does it go down, sort of thing?
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_03: But at the end of the day, it's like seeing when that first game comes.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_03: Who's who's the best to have available to be playing these games to get results?
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_03: That's although it's good to have that kind of team morale and stuff like that, but you just want results.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, fans are watching it for a side.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_03: Would he would he play?
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: Would you would he I think he would.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_03: The boy I don't know, the boy Ben Doak.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_04: Carl L went in for him.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_04: Carl L had him nearly had him over the line about a year and a half when you signed.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_04: Some more nearly had him.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_04: What on law no?
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_04: On lawn, aye.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_04: When then I think Middlesbrough came in, something like that, and and Middlesbrough because they came in, someone else came in and he went a lot higher, but he was he was on his way.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_03: Just showed you, didn't it?
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_03: But um yeah, he done his hammy, so it depended.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_03: I think he would have been definitely involved.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: I don't know if well I would have started him and he's been flying, didn't he?
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Frank Sinclair done under the cosh, didn't he?
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_04: And a lot of them didn't play for Jamaica, and then Jamaica got in the World Cup, and then Robbie Earl himself.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_04: I think Dion Burton had already played, but a hell of a lot of Premier League players then went.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_04: And to be fair, under the Cosh went, they must have been rage in the Jamaica players.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_04: And I went, nah.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_04: They were just so proud that their country were going to the World Cup and embraced them with open arms.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_04: Whereas I would have been a bit like, fucking hell, absolutely not be pan in here.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_04: You're just coming from the coming to France, aren't you?
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_03: I know it depends who you ask though on it.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_03: If your place is getting took by somebody, it's just if you've done all the but I do think I do think he would have been involved.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_03: But it is disappointing.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: Like I think there must have been some sort of encouragement from his side for Steve Clark.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_03: I think he said that he's met him or something, he spoke to him.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_03: So there must have been something there, do you know what I mean?
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_03: Because it's just been a straight no if he wasn't interested.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: But to hold out for England, fair enough, because you see Declan Rice, what he done, do you mean he played for Ireland and then held out for England and now he's a big superstar.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_03: So I can see why he's doing it, but it could backfire.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_03: If he doesn't get in this England squad, then he's a bit stupid now, didn't he?
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_04: What about this one?
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_04: Player power.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_04: So it went two ways.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_04: Newcastle lads have got a meeting together to say, oh, this needs to be better, this isn't on the manager.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_04: Going to the director saying it's on us, we'll get it right.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_04: Managers being first class, and then you've got the other one.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_04: Reports coming out that the Forest players have gone to see their lunatic chairman and said we're not enjoying training, it's too tiring, it's too intense, too much hard work, too much hard work.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_03: I I get these players' meetings, and I've been involved in a few that I've got to be.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_04: So I remember John O'Shea has been quite honest about it.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_04: He went and seen the High Rocket Sunday about Decanio and said it was just too much.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_04: I've heard spoke to a lot of players who said it was just a bit too much.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_04: They never got dealt, did they?
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_03: No, I've heard SciFairy talks a lot about that.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_03: Every day I just feel like if you've got a few senior lads there who their heart's in the right place and they're not doing it for their own benefit.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_03: Because a lot of times these meetings and people are piping up, it's it's all to protect themselves.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_03: Let's be honest.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_03: Like, if you've got a manager that wants to play silky football and you're somebody that wants to get on the ball, you're gonna be pro manager, do you think?
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_03: Because it suits you.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_03: You don't want some dinosaurs coming in that's going to play full four.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: I enjoyed Williamson because it suited me.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_03: Whereas hating with no disrespect, fucking hating it when he got the balls out.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna like it.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_03: I'm not a character if we had a meeting and say I was in the other shoe and the other side saw it, and it was like, well, I'd like this manager because he wants to play football and it doesn't suit me, I would never really say it in negative because at the end of the day, it's no other job to decide who the manager's gonna be.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_03: But I do think there's instances where for the good of the the club and the team, if something needs to be said, like a Decanio situation where it's like, listen, it's not just for me, this is for I can see the effect on the squad.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_03: Something maybe you never have a word.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_04: Decanio worked at Swindon because the lower league players, you got them buying into it and they got results.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_04: Sunderland you differ different egos, isn't it?
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_03: Money is better, like you've you're Swindon, you've they're they're buying into it because they think, well, if I do well here, I'm gonna kick on and go on.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_03: Sunderland have already hit their ceiling, really.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_03: A lot of the boys, and it's like, well, I shouldn't be asked to do this, I shouldn't be asked to be on how many days.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_03: They not for this one is ridiculous, isn't it?
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_03: Really, like because you're working too hard.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_03: Now, is it like a few senior boys say, Listen, Gaffer, like we feel sometimes we're getting the games a bit sluggish.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: Now, there's ways of putting it across, and they maybe go, Do you know what?
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_03: I'm taking I'll take that on board that a sports scientist will be like, How do you feel?
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_03: Then you can maybe tailor it a little bit on a Friday and do a little bit less, but you're still getting the same work done.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_03: But to go and have meetings with the owners and be like, Oh, this is ridiculous and it's too hard, then Gaz Gaza's back on form, isn't he?
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_04: He's chirped up about it and said he just wanted to play football.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_04: He was the ultimate just wanting to play football, wasn't he?
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_04: And he says he would give everything, anything, and you would he would, wouldn't he?
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_04: Now looking at Gaza, he would give anything to play again, and he would just play for anyone.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_04: Be interested in when DeCanio's getting doing them runs though, but you'd like to think DeCanio would say, Right, you're a genius, Gaza.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_04: You uh do you want to hear a Gaza story?
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, go on, give me it.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_04: So playing the reserves for um Sunderland against Middlesbrough.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_04: What we spoke about last week, reserves was proper that game, wasn't it?
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_04: So I'm talking Sunderland v.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_04: Middlesbrough, you've got Danny Dichio in our team, you've got Alex Ray, you've got Gavin McCann, myself, Furwell, you know, whoever the number two goalkeeper is.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_04: You've got a proper team.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_04: Um George McCarty, left back, you're playing Middlesbrough, so you've got Alan Armstrong, Mikhail Beck, Gazza, Pallister, you know, Neil Madison.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_04: So we're just playing, and it's 1-1, it's it's a tough game.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_04: I'm up against Gaza.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_04: And I've got been giving the ball a bit of a hospital ball into us.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_04: I know he's behind us, and I know he can shove us out of the way at any time.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_04: And he's just gone left back, Ginger.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_04: I'm like, what?
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_04: Just trying to force him off.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_04: And as I say, he's the strongest player ever.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he played against he went left back.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_04: So I've just trusted him, and I've just blindly switched the ball out to my left back.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_04: And I'm thinking it's just gonna land at a middle spray as right wing as well.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and they're gonna go in and score.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_04: But I've looked and it's gone out to Paul.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_04: Remember Paul Heckenbottom?
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_04: Uh his manager of Preston now, it went to him in loads of space.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_04: He tapped us on the head, he went, Great pass, your passing's been good today.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_04: And then it was a throw in, he went, stop, and he went just like as someone was like just taking, he just went, try that.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_04: When you take that foot, that ball across your body, take it with the outside of your foot because you're going inside, outside, so it's taking two to just let it roll across you.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_04: This is mid-game, yeah.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_04: And I was just like, That is absolutely different, class.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_04: Like, you talk about all these pros who helped you.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_04: Jamie Redknapp helped me through a match once for for Sunland Reserves, and then the Barnsley manager rang Jamie Redknap saying, Should he pay the fee for me to take us?
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_04: And Jamie Redknap went take him all day.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_04: So, pro, I'd like to think I was one of them pros, but I doubt I was.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_04: It's like horrible.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_04: What young boy didn't know.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_04: Going back to that, we'll finish on this before we uh wrap up.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_04: In that same game, remember Jimmy Five Bellies, because I'm mate.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_04: So we're playing at New Ferrens Park, and all it is, it's an open, three sides are open, there's one like a bit like pennless ground.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_04: So there's changing rooms in a stand there.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_04: Jimmy Five Bellies just like in the terrace and like that.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_04: I think he was actually eating a party at the time, and you can see the car park and everything.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_04: He went, Oh Jimmy! He went, You better get that fucking video for me.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_04: Jimmy went, What video, Gaza?
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_04: He went, you know what video.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_04: Everyone else here has seen that video.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_04: You better go and get that video, and it better be here by the end of this match.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_04: He went, he went, go.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_04: Next thing, Jimmy's dropped whatever, and because it was an injury, you can see him running up to his car because it's like on a hill, so you can see him like flapping.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_04: And he tanners went, What video, Gaza?
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_04: He went, There's no video.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be going home now, flapping like fuck, looking for a video.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_04: You can just imagine in the front of his message lying out and he's got bust his video.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_05: He's done some things to him, as him over the years.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_02: He made his pause water over him and everything.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_02: He put like dog food in that and pies or something.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_02: A red and cat food or something.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_02: Alan McCoy says he's genius, doesn't he?
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_04: Because he'd done Gordon Dewry's car with a fish.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_04: And he went, right, that's us, Gaza.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_04: Why you brought two?
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_04: He went, because I'm gonna put it in an obvious place so we'll find it after a couple of days.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_04: I don't think that's it.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_04: But I'm gonna stuck this.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_04: And McCoy said he didn't even know this compartment existed in a car.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_04: Put it in there, and he went.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_04: So when he cleans out the first time, everyone thinks it's gone, it's still gonna be there.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_04: McCoy said, That is absolute genius.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_04: We'll uh right.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_04: Sorry about a couple of questions that we've not made, but we'll get on to them next week, I promise.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_04: Um so quick one, call our United at the weekend, you will at home, get out the traps.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_04: Let's give us a three or four-nil, keep this momentum going, keep the fans on board.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_04: Third's the place to be.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_05: It is, it is, yeah.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, they definitely want to finish third donor because it's that's what's up for grabs.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_05: Uh first and second is is disputed out of York in Rochdale, isn't it?
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_05: So, like I said, it's been a good week.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_05: Um get a big crowd down and uh take the game to Rochester to Yawville and try and get some some goals and and keep the run going, yeah?
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_03: Definitely, yeah.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_03: Just as you said, keep it going and that feel-good factor getting at the end of the season.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_03: This was the most important, isn't it?
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_03: The the few months back that they forgot about now.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_03: Now it's about building and getting that momentum going and getting into these playoffs, it could be huge.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_04: Put you on the spot.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_04: How you got the weekend?
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_03: Cool rain Friday night.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_03: Cool rain, big game.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_03: Friday night.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_03: That's uh yeah, that's uh a derby for us.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_04: At their players?
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_03: We beat them Are they Astro Sunday?
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_03: I believe so.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_05: I I believe so, yeah.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm glad you're asking because we've got the Cumbria and Derby.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_05: We've got Penrith at home Friday night.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_05: Friday night?
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: Friday night Friday night on the day.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_05: So bowls of food.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so it's Friday night for a reason.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_05: Carlisle United fans, yeah.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_05: Two games in two, uh two games in two days for you.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_05: Come and watch the come on then.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_05: So Carlisle United Carlisle City versus Penrith.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_05: Guilford Park.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_05: Burger Van's phenomenal is phenomenal.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_05: A lot of cold cans of lager, yes, and soft drinks, yes, and coffee and tea upstairs.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, and we're both I think we're onesie tenth and onesie eleventh in the league.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_05: Um so we're very European places.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_05: We're gonna try.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_05: Uh into Total Cup.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_05: Inter Total Cup, yeah.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I mean lads are bang up for it and we can't wait.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_05: So yeah, be nice if you know me.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_04: I'd ask for a freebie, but I don't want to pay my way there.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_04: You do, you do, good on you.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_04: Right, so I'll be there.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_04: So are you what you go on suit or tracksuit on the bench?
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_04: Just for listeners, Skip as assistant manager.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_05: Track suit, yeah.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_05: No, no, big jacket, it will be cold.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_05: Straight out after?
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_05: No, I'm going out in Morpeth on Saturday.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_03: Are you Matt and the Neil with the socks over the trousers?
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_02: He jumps like a bit of glasses.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_02: He does his chair because Kirk Kirk is the manager, he's just very serious.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_02: Kirk is too busy hammering someone, is he?
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_04: Big angry man.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_04: Thank you very much for that.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_04: Again, a massive shout out to our fantastic sponsor this week, GW Auto Repairs, based in Long Island Park, opposite Matalan.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_04: They specialise in car van and MOTs, servicing repairs, and newly added fit and tires.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_04: So cheers, Mike Wood.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_04: All the best to Isaac, the kid as well.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_04: Doing well in the academy.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_04: If not, he's got the garage to look forward to.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_04: You can be we'll be visiting him many a times.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_04: So thank you, everyone, and thank you to Mike for that sponsorship.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_04: Much appreciated.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_04: And we'll see you next week where hopefully Dylan and Skimp have had good results in the derbies.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_04: Fingers crossed, yeah.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, hopefully the best.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_01: Three in the middle was produced, recorded, and edited.
