- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Because our almighty beloved Brisbane Lions, our AFL team, won the premiership on the weekend.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: They're third in a row.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And that's like the Super Bowl.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It's like winning the Champions League.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It's a big it's a big fucking deal.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: You know, congratulations to the lads.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: It's um oh, he's got himself quite the tangle here.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: No, I'm good.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Uh spent a lovely Saturday afternoon with you uh and uh some of the friends of the show um celebrating, watching, uh fretting at various points about the uh about the result, but in the end getting keen with the outcome.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: More tense in a caravan park, I was.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you were there were points where I thought you may cry uh out of frustration, and then there were points where I thought you might cry out of celebration.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Shout out to our best friend of the show, Daniel Devitt, who in the last five minutes, which was the most stressful part of the grand final, decided to tell me fun facts about Kylie Minogue, where she's lived, where she lives now, and what she's doing.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I won't lie, it was a 10 out of 10 move that real I really enjoyed.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: It was um and while we're on the topic, an incredible pregame show from Kylie.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And you can get pregnant from pre-game.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: You keep talking while I fix this.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: You're really having yourself a real mare over there.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Uh Kylie came out um and did just hits from across the career.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Um, she had uh G-Flip as well, kind of doing a bit of a supporting role.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: She had Dom Dollar there doing some remixing.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Um, she had William Barton, who was on guitar at one point.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Just like Aussie icon for a very fucking good reason.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Very much so.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And known internationally, an icon of the gays, they're and girls.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: The girls, gays, and they, Sam.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I did it the wrong way, didn't I?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: But now I think very much an icon of the show uh after that Saturday performance.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Incredible.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It was very, very good.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Shout out Kylie.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And the she was literally spinning and flying around.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: She was.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I hate to be a hater, but Pink, get down.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Pink, know your role.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Know your role, play your role.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: But um, we'll get into the other adventures of the weekend shortly, mate.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But for now.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Should we tap into some new tunes?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Some new tunes, Sam.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: We should.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna keep the scarf on all episodes?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fuck it until I get hot, and then I'm like, I'll I'll take it off my biggest.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: It'll start itching your neck.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it will.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: But that's okay.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Um that's what I'm here for, you know?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Sam, quite a diverse cast of songs in my list this week.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Diverse.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: A plethora, if you will.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Yes, quite quite literally.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: My first song this week is from a band from I think Bristol.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: I wrote it down and then I put a question mark next to it because I wasn't 100% sure in the UK.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, the band is called My First Time.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: They're dropping quite like electronic dance punk kind of sounds.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, this song is called Every Version of You.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And it's quite post-industrial, nine-inch nails, but also something very 90s punky dance kind of sound.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I don't know how to describe it beyond that.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Dance punk, electronic thrown in there.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Crack a little listen to this bad boy sound.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Crack a fat.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: It's just like in your face.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Just like standing next to the speakers, just having your your ears absolutely blown to bits.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Come in.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: That sort of vibe.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I've stumbled across gold this week, Maximus.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Mate, we sent you down the mine and you've come back with a cartload of ore.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've got a crooked neck, but I've come back with coal.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I thought you had gold.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but there's coal mines.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Gold is obviously more preferable.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Maybe a ruby.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Put it between my toes in the river.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Much to unpack there.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Blood diamond.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: They were rubies, weren't they?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: For some particular reason I was thinking like Pokemon and Ruby and Sapphire, but I guess you can really tell.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: It's quite a lot of them.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: That's why he lost his virginity at 35.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And I can't wait to turn 35.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I'm counting down.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Only 34 years.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Oh fuck.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Alright, my first artist is Senobia.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: She is an artist from Sydney.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Uh the song is Swallowed by the World.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: She is on tour with North Lane in November.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: It's very sleep token.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Um, very kind of cinematic metal breakdown-y stuff.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna play you the breakdown.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Literally, which is just you know what I said.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: It's breakdown y, so I'm gonna play you the breakdown.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Um, fucking English language, eh?
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Time for MTB.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: But um, it's been a very nice find for me.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: It goes for six minutes fifteen.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So you're into if you're into a journey, you'll like this.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: But um, an artist that goes under the radar in the Australian scene.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Please.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Hit me with a change up there.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It's very sleep token.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Very doom.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Doom meets sleep token.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: She wears a mask and everything.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: What's with masked bands?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Sleepnot did at first.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Well they probably didn't.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say I'm sure there's someone who wore a mask before that, but in a little way, Sam, don't we all wear masks?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Mud Vein.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Um Shout out Plastic Skin, actually.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Phantom of the Opera.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Fant oh, he only wore half of one.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And then you could talk two-faced Batman.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not a mask at all.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: No, oil burn.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Uh acid.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Acid burn.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: In Dark Knight it was oil.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, Sam, my next song is um a bit of it's the next step in our dalliance with jazz that we've been having recently.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, dalliance.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: You're choosing some outrageous words today.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Red of fucking thesaurus this week.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Um, Sam, the this band is for also from the UK.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: It's from they're from London.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: They're called Happy Garden, and they're kind of doing like jazz, but it almost has some like breakbeady kind of drums in it, some loungy sort of sounds going in there as well.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and I found that this music has been really good for like that lock-in focus, get shit done kind of mentality.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Like really good, like background music when you want to like kind of something stimulating, but not like in your face.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, this song is called Reef Hike uh by Happy Garden.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: It's very croony, isn't it?
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: It is, it's very um what's the right word?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Like late night.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Late night, late night jazz bar, you know, a little lamp on the table.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: But it's happening as well, like there's energy.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: It's not just like, oh, let's go downstairs and punch a dance.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Cat's pajamas, Sam.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: I do like jazz in moderation.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: It's moderate jazz.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Like I want to dive into Miles Davis, but there's so much.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: I think almost all of those uh artists I feel like are big record artists because like there is so much that it's gonna be hard to sit down and go, like, I like this particular song or anything like that.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: So you need the the record to be the uh the experience.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: So there's different eras, like where do you where do you jump from a cliff from the city?
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: 1989 was a pretty good start, you know.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: That was a lot a real entry path in for Talisworth for a lot of people.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: On the eraser's tour, Sam.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Her new song is diabolically.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not great.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Didn't love it.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: So bad.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: You get that on uh some of the bigger jobs.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: It sounds AI.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: No, it didn't say not AI, it just sounds a bit mediocre.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: It's so bad.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not her best work, is it?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It's alright, she can fly to us and complain.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Um, my next one, Maxwell.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: We talked off air that we need to bring a bit of weird, and this one is a bit weird.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's called Complacent by the miscellaneous department.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Um think glitch pop, hyper pop, bit punky, bit rocky.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Think artists like Breakance.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Who is a mystery to the music industry, but he's back, which is sick.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Um, but I discovered this song ironically while listening to Brakans the other day.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I I don't really know how to describe it other than like glitch pop rock vibes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of things going into one, but let's let's do it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: It's a lot.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: It's kind of weird.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Hyper poppy, dancey, blow-fi beat, emo, vibey.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Sort of like metalhorns with a thumb.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Spider-Man.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Go web.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Uh Sam, my next song is shout out to friend of the show Johnny for introducing at least actually, definitely both of us to this band because we got we found about found out about them at the same time.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: The band is called Rocks Ferry.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: They are from Port Macquarie, right here in Australia, Sam.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And uh think Royal Blood meets DZ death rays, like fuzzy garage rock kind of sound.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: But this particular song, which is called Pretend, has a bit of like this kind of groove that they build into both the percussion and the play between the percussion and the guitar.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Then the harmonies just kind of help it like elevate that that little bit more.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: So yeah, this is Pretend by Rox Fairy.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like if Jet and Wolf Matter Wolf Mother Wolf Matter Wolf Mother.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Uh if Jet and Wolf Mother had a baby.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can kind of see that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: The fuzziness of Wolf Mother with like the the rockiness of Jet.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Yep, yep, yeah, yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: It's cool.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Uh my next one, Maxwell, is by an artist called Asava, A-S-A-V-A.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Um, and the song is called End Again.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of the love child of um sound.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Well, it sounds like the love child of Periphery and like Carmen Jacar.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Um Happy Metal meets metal.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, it's kind of proggy.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: It's big wall of noise, but the like really sort of soaring vocals.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: It's very cool.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I stumbled across this one accidentally.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give you a little bit of a taste at the end.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: The little climax, if you will.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Oh well.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Tell me to dinner, Sam.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: What are you talking about?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't date.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: I I protect my peace.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: It's right up there.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: It is right up there.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: That note kept going up.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: It did, you think?
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, he's reached the climax.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: No, he goes again.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: He goes again.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And honestly, credit to him.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: It's hard to do.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: The stamina on it, Sam.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Sam, what did you do on Friday?
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Um we saw Fuck, this guy's good.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: This guy's a professional.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: We saw Violence Soho, the return of Violent Soho to the Brisbane stages.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, we sure did.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And boy, was she packed, sweaty, and heaving.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: So was the show, Sam.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know who you're talking about.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Well, sometimes you just gotta No, I can't.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Stop it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: You're misbehaving tonight and making me look like a right knob.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Um, but we did, we saw Violence Soho.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: It was a great show.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, feels like forever ago that we saw them.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: What were your takeaways?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, my first takeaway was excellent set list.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Um, just primo, except they didn't play fur eyes.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Didn't play fur eyes.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: There were some notable absences.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I would have liked to see them play Evergreen from Waco.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: That was sick.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Um Muscle Junkie could have made it.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: The other song that I thought could have gone in there would be Neighbor Neighbor.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Um but I'd say other than that, they had a pretty much it was pretty packed with good stuff from like pretty much all the albums too.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Like they they had some some Waco, they had some everything is okay, they had plenty of Hungry Ghosts, uh including some deeper cuts at OK Cathedral.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Okay Cathedral, that outro was sick.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: With the with the whole outro, like extended jam kind of thing.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Um and yeah, I think just just an excellent here is the the history and the the breadth of um Vaughn Soho all in one.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: And god damn.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: You hear some of those riffs and you're like, yeah, there's fucking slaps.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Docalypso, even covered in chrome and Saramona said.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And then they did In the Isle as well.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, look, controversial.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Now I've seen him.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Not in a rush to see him again.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Wow, that is controversial.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: I think it was the like it was the the little it's the same experience I had when I was Oasis, which was hanging to see them.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Yep, glad I got to see them.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Do want to see them again, but I am happy to just like this has eased my burdens for a while, you know?
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it was the the lack of presence of them builds demand.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Now you've seen them.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: You've got the post show clarity.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: The um I want to shout out to whoever did their graphics and lighting as well.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Those were immaculate vibes.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Shout out to whom it may concern.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Dear Sir Madam.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: It was a great show though.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: But again, it's scratch the itch.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: If they announced it tour that they were doing in Jan, I think I'd be okay.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: They've got a few festival shows coming out.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't seen them on this headline run, definitely get out to see them at things like Rolling Sets.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Rolling Sets.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Um and a couple of those other ones into well into next year.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, just they have not missed a beat in the live show.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Betty Rays as well doing a very good um support slot.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Played a lot of covers.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Did yeah, they got it got a fair few covers in there, um, which I kind of fucked with.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Each their own.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: But um yeah.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: If you haven't, if you're an international listener who doesn't know who Violet Soho are, go and give them a listen.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Hungry Ghost is where I would start.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Um famous, very well-known and loved Australian band, particularly in Brisbane.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: 4122 crew.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: But um What is it about Brisbane producing just the cult classic bands?
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Your powder fingers, your violent sohoes, your other ones, your others, yeah, etc., you know, your et al's.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Savage Garden.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, I would say I wouldn't say they're cult classic, I'd just call them classic.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Like they they broke through and went.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Amity Affliction adjacent.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: They're from Gimpy, but anyway, anything north of Brisbane is considered Brisbane.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, tell that to some people who live in central and north Queensland.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Name one.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Name one person that lives in central Queensland.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Um, but we've also got some tour stuff coming up, Maxwell.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, landed back.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, that didn't land the first time.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Land on first time.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Well, that one, you know.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: That one was fucked.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: The joke, the joke is that.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: This is what he does to me, everyone.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: He goes on a rampage where he goes, I'm just gonna shoot in hope.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: I've got 50 balls, one of them will hit the net, and then I get looped into doing stupid shit, and it's just not a representation of who we are as a podcast.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Sam, let's get into some of these tours.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: I really licked my microphone.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Let's get into some of these tours.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Would you like me to?
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: No, actually, I don't.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: It would stink.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: It would absolutely reek.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Eureek up.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Fuck.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: We'll get onto the tours.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Sam, uh, I'll do the first one.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: The strokes.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Uh, we're teasing a an Australian The Strokes, Sam.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: I'll be getting onto that.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Anyway, the band, they're they're coming to Australia next year.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: They were teasing uh on a billboard just outside my house the other day.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: And um, I'll tell you what, it's a it's East Coast only.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Apologies, Adelaide and Perth.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Um, they're doing Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Uh 13th of February at Rivers Day, sorry, not Rivers Stage, not that at all.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: 13th of February at Brisbane Entertainment Centre, 17th of February at Rodlave Arena, and the 20th of February at Centennial Parklands in Sydney.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Um, just an absolutely like the Strokes, one of those bands that have diehard fans who will go see every single show.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And it's a pretty stacked lineup.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: They're bringing out Beck, Courtney Bunnett, and Promised Land.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: It February in Australia next year is stacked.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's pretty much non-stop hits.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: I think between you and I we could see a show every night.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Pretty, pretty much.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Probably there's probably a few nights where we're gonna have to do run-betweens.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Well, because it's ironic that you mention the strokes being here on February 13th in Brisbane, because the night before Lizzie McAlpine is playing Brisbane, who also just announced an Australian tour within the same week essentially, playing Adelaide Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and then going to Auckland.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Off the top of my head, you've got Lizzie, you've got the strokes, Day Seeker coming with Jutes, Silent Planet, and Sarge 6, you've got Citizen here, you've got Sleep Theory here, you've got President here, you've got Leon Bridges.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Leon Bridges, Pale Face coming with counterparts, you've got Empire of the Sun.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Empire of the Sun.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: It's forkin' stuck.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: And the shortest month.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And Dayseek is playing on Valentine's Day.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, people gonna get pregnant.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Uh Liz McAlpine is coming down here next year with Mila Bay.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Miller B.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Uh is it B?
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: I think it's B.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, I called it Bayer.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Oh well.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: It's so bad.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: You get that on the big jobs.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Uh uh that's Wednesday, 3rd of Feb in Adelaide at the Tebedon, the 5th of Feb uh at the Red Hill Auditorium in Perth, 7th of Feb at the TikTok Entertainment Centre in Sydney Sam.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: So yuck.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: The 10th of Feb at the City Mile Music Bowl in Melbourne, River Stage here in Brizzy on the 12th of Feb, and then the 14th over in New Zealand in Auckland.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: She's playing the River Stage.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Hope it rains.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's fucking grim.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: No, it'd be imagine seeing ceilings in the rain.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but also Riverstage in the rain.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, true.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Your hands will go pruney.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: That's I I nearly broke my ankle last time when I was at a show uh Riverstage in the rain.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but between you and your ex-girlfriend, you both break your ankles all the time.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Just out there stepping each other.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Just yeah, just doing ankle snapping all day long.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Just with Ashcroft in that last run towards the uh fucking Quay Cooper, really.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, and should we get on to the Australian Grammys?
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the if that's doing the Grammys a disservice.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say that is really gassing the Arya's ties, isn't it?
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Arya's famously not the most riveting content in the world.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: I I I would argue that it is the most riveting content in the world because it kind of is a shit show.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: It's so bad.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Aryas, we love you and we love the work that you do, but the the event, the aria's ceremony, can sometimes be a train wreck to watch in the best possible way.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: It's a mixture of D gra degrade celebrities trying to talk to really talented musicians.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: And then international that they've brought out who's like, The international being asked how amazing it is to beat the arias.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: You like the coffee, and they clearly don't know anything about the arias, they're just taking the you know the invoice, yeah.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: And then you've just got the people you haven't seen on the TV for 10 years becoming legends all of a sudden.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: You're like I'll say the Arias in my books is one step above the logies because I think everyone at the Arias like Australian music scene, very good, like that carries it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Everyone get like everyone acknowledges that the Australian music scene is primo, yeah, but the way we do Award ceremonies is not great.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: If you bring the high quality Australian talent of the music scene to the absolute best of the best cream of the crop Logies presentation style, you get the beauty that is the aria's.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: I just don't think Australians, and especially Australian creatives, don't do award shows very well.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: We're very humble as a people.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: We're like, no, no, not for me.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I prefer anonymity.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: Anonymity, sorry.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Um anonymity?
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the one.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: It's just, it's just a it's a it's a it's an honor to be anonymity.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: It's an honor to be in the room.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Um I think there is something charming about the arias in a way that like sometimes because you know, same that they'll do for the Grammys.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: They'll get like you know, two artists to come on and perform like one of the biggest songs from the year, and some of the like the mashups and the performances they do, same as like the Brit Awards as well, yeah, can end up being fucking cool.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: So um the arias, there is a charm to them, you know, in a way that I think that the Logies has no charm.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: The Logies is terrible.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: The Logies I don't think people watch Logis anymore.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: I think I I exclusively cringe watch the Logis.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's tough.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, tough wine.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: That's a tough wank.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Sam, should we get into some of the nominees?
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Where do you want to start?
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Let's start with some of the uh genre categories.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: We won't go through all of them because there are a hell of a lot of categories, but let's do some of the genre categories that we think will be the most important to our listeners.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Or you we can go back up to album of the year.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Go for gold, Sonny Jim.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Uh let's start with nominees for best hip hop or rap release.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, friend of the show, Baker Boy, got nommed for Janjay.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Um, Devourer got in there for volume two.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: If you don't cry, you'll laugh.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Sorry, if you don't laugh, you'll cry.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: I should get that right, shouldn't I?
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Hilt Up Woods uh in there for uh Never Coming Home, Blackprint from Miss Canina, and Nerve, Brizzy Boy in there with Growing Pains.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Sick.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Um early favorite.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, Baker Boy's album is fucking spectacular.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: I think Baker Boy should win it.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't be surprised if Hilt Up Hoods won it.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Miss Canina, though, that uh a lot of the material that she's been dropping recently, fucking good.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Fucking good.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Norman East for best hard rock heavy metal album.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk about this.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Cosmic Psychos, I really like beard.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: DZ Death Race, easy and out of control.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Carnival Inverses, Godspeed by these New South Wales, and Angel's Mess by Wax.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: As per Where's the Metal?
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, Carnival?
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: Famously, Prague.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: And very, very good band.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: I loved easy Death Race.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't you wouldn't see them on a metal lineup.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: I'd call them hard rock though.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: They're hard rock.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: These New South Wales, alternative.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Alternative wax.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: They're on the line between punk and alternative.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Cosmic Psychos, I think, are hard rock in the sense that they're like they're in their own little world, the cosmic psychos.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: But you and I did say like there's been a lot of good music dropping this year, but we were hard pressed to think of Australian bands dropping in that especially big nationally known metal bands.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Because it like North Lane's dropping, but it will drop out of season.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: They'll be nominated next year.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Um Thornhill dropped just before the window.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Don't get your knickers in a knot, but I agree, it's a bit weak.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Then best rock album, just regular rock, not hard rock as well.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Creature of Habit uh by Courtney Barnett, DMA's by DMAs, Glory by Friends of the Show, Teenage Jones.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: So not Teenage Jones, Teen Jesus and the Gene Teasers.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Uh Bellow Lip Bombs in There Again with Again.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: And then uh Sungazer by Tem Temper Trap.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I think there's I would say minimum four of those albums.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Very, very good.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: The DMAs album, great.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Teen Jesus, great.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Bellow Lip Bombs having a blow up.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Tember Trap wouldn't put in the rock category.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Corny Barnett's certainly not rock.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: I think definitely rock, but I just I that album didn't grab me that much.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I think there are probably other Australian rock bands that I think would go in there over Courtney Barnett.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Um Corney Barnett's music does nothing for me.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: I I like Kurt Vial.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Then you can't dislike Courtney Barnett that much.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: You don't mind a bit of MacDamarco as well.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Uh I like the idea of MacDamarco.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: But I can very much like Kurt Vile and not Corney Barnett.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: I think I think you should give Corny Barnett's debut record another go.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: It's like it's not bad.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: I don't mind it.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Sounds good.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: I'll look into it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: I'll bring it to fucking final club one time and make it work.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: No, you won't.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Um Best Dance, electronic release.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: You've got Nina Dirachi, Wanna Cry, Addicted to Base Dom Dollar, Afterthought, Tame Impala, Your Mate, Yes Boon, All I Really Want.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: And then you've got Actin' Tough, Dean Turnley.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Your mate.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Well, I think on Impact, Afterthought by Tame Impala is probably gonna win.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Although Dean Turnley's song was everywhere.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: I also think Nina Dirachi could, like she had an she swept almost every category she was in last year.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: She could keep the uh the keep the good times rolling this year.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: And I want to or handball you this one, Maxwell.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: But we're gonna talk about it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: The best alternative release.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Let me just find it.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: There it is.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Uh looking for people to unfollow by Eka Vandal, Things Take Time by Gang of Views, Red Star, Red Star Woo in the World, Wild Worldwide Scourge, sorry, uh by Genesis Usu, It's My Party by Meg Mac, and Deadbeat by Tamium Parla.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, I would like to see Genesis Usu take that one home.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: I think everything he's dropped recently has been fucking fantastic.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: But again, what is alternative classified as?
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Like, what is it?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Well, I think generally speaking, alternative classifies it as like is it mainstream rock?
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: No, then it's probably alternative.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah no, sorry, not even mainstream rock, but mainstream pop is probably a better.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: But this is where I get confused.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: And this is why I'd love to talk to the Ari Award categorists.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: You've got Tamium Parler being nominated for best alternative release for his Is Deadbeat the album?
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Deadbeat is the album, yes.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: So that's the album.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: There is a song also called Deadbeat.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: But then there's a song called Afterthought, which we just talked about, being nominated for Best Dance.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: So it all a lot of it comes down to which charts it charts in.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: It's so confusing.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: But there's there would be a uh there would be a uh you know, brand Bible somewhere in the backs uh backstage of the arias that's like this thick that says like if it can something can be in the you know top 40 chart.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: There's you know the top 40 chart is just the top 40, like what is the highest line stuff of all time?
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Then it gets into the category stuff, which is always there's always line balls about what is uh in or out for different categories, different genres.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: You know, I think to when um Old Town Road from uh Little Nas X.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: That was country.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Well, there was a whole thing about it because it actually got banned from the country charts, despite the fact that I would say quite obviously it's country.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it got banned from the country charts and then got readmitted to the country charts after there was an uproar.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: And so it all comes down to like some at some point it comes down to like here's a set of criteria.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Does it fit in this criteria?
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: No, then it doesn't fit in this chart.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: And probably some person just making a call.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it would be nice to just you know have fork found in kitchen rather than fork found in bathroom.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: But what about you know fork found in toaster in bath?
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: We've been there.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: But also like, you know, what's what about a what about like a pitchfork?
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: That's often found in the in garden shed.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very confusing.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: But um rounding it out, nominees for best or for album of the year.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: There's a few heavy hitters you've got Soul Star Boy Soda, DMA self-titled, looking for people to unfollow, Echo Vandal, Red Star Woo, and the World Wide Skurs.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: You also tripped on it.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Thank god.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was tough.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Just as a woo-suit, and then you've got Deadbeat Tamium Parla.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: I see Tamian Parler winning and him not being there to accept the award.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Very possibly.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Um Arias, Kevin here, did you know I'm just one guy?
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: I think Echovandal could be a real smoking, real dark horse on this one.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: I think um, very like huge overseas, uh, like massive overseas impact.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: And I think one of those albums that will sneak up on a lot of people.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: And everyone will be like, oh, I've loved Echo Vandal for the longest time.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Shut up.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: She is they are a band, but also she's the driver of a lot of it, I believe.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: She's been killing it overseas for a long time, and Australia's been sleeping on her.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: So I'd love to see her win.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: I'd love to see her sort of stuck.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Fuck you, Australia.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: I love it when artists do that.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: I don't think I don't I don't love it when an artist do that because I think two things two things can be true at once.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: You can be a big Australian artist and you can be successful at the stage.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: You don't have to say fuck you, Australia.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, true.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: You can it's funny though.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: You can be real and also be very good.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: But to do it on the Arias stage would be funny.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: I think it's funnier just to go fuck the Arias sometimes, but yeah, yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: It would be a power move just to not go.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Potentially.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: But also, again, if you're if you're up by album of the year, like I think you'd still be like Akavandal obviously had a lot of support from Triple J back in the day.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: Like, I think it's still a quite nice, you know, uh rounding it off moment for uh someone who has who who went through the Australian scene and then found success overseas.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: True.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Dancing two nominated for Song of the Year.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I can't wait for Dancing Three to come out, Sam.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: That's horrific.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, should we get to the suitcase, Maxwell?
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Let's um let's give it a little zippy zip, Sam.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: What kind of fucker are you?
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Maxwell, I've been doing a lot of thinking.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: I've been listening to some beautiful music.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, and it's just got me I want to start a conversation with you and our listeners.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Hi, listeners.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Listeners.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: How are you today?
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Um but I've been listening to a lot of Radiohead, a lot of Joji, a lot of um even Oasis a little bit.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Oh beautiful, beautiful music.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: From beautiful, beautiful people, Sam.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Evocative, atmospheric, makes you feel things sad.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Um so I want to talk to you about beautiful songs.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: One of the most beautiful songs of all time.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Sam.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: My first beautiful song.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: I think is beautiful because it shouldn't be beautiful.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: It's delicate, it's intimate, but it also has all these different weird things that make it not feel that.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: There's like a detuned piano, there's some hand claps, there's like quite a driving bass line.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: And if you were to tell me like all of that results in this quite cozy, nice, happy, beautiful song about the family dog, I'd be so surprised.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Um, but it does, and it's Charlie by More Rat.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Brisbane's own.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: All you gotta do is wait for me to get a lady in the lady, children.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very it's very nice.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: On paper, it shouldn't be that nice.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: It's so there's lots, there's so much going on.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Bit happening.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: I thought you'd bring like the modern the modern take, so why don't you take me through the rest of your you want to just keep going with this?
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: This next one uh from a Canadian band called Dizzy.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a similar like sonically quite similar to what uh you just said with Charlie, but I think on the back end it's beautiful, not because of what's going on, but just how simple and it just makes so much sense.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: It's so smooth and easy, like the the vocal line and the keys kind of all blend together.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: There's these nice harmonies.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: It's a song called Swim.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: Uh Sam, alright, this next one is uh a song that you and I often both talk about.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Not often, actually, we haven't talked about it in a while, but it's one that we've definitely connected about previously.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: I saw you studying it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: I know what it is.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Did you?
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Well, it's uh Claire de Loon by Fly Facility.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Hell yeah, brother.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Claire de Loon, the the piece by Claude Debussy, Sam, uh, is so iconic that trying to recreate it as like a chill electronic song is like an insane move to do.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, but Fly Facilities just they capture the vibe in this song.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: Like that it doesn't, it's there's parts that sort of recreate moments from Claire de Loon, but they don't try and like do that wholesale.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Honestly, not only one of the best or most beautiful songs of all time, arguably, I'm gonna say one of the best songs of all time.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: It is an incredible song.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: It's seven minutes that just has this beautiful, tender intimacy to it.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: It's fucking awesome.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Until Telstra attempted to ruin it, you fuck.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: But they failed because it just it just still works.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Ugh.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: And just on an album that's full of like otherwise quite like vibey club bangers, just to put seven minutes of like the most chill shit you ever heard.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: It just the way it builds and oh yeah.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, listen to it in the car.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, night time in the car when it's raining.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Fuck me up.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: I think I'm gonna do that when I go home because it was starting to rain.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Well, it was starting to rain when I walked in.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, there you go.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, hopefully you're all set.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: Driving over the story bridge.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Oh try not to veer off.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: This is it.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: We crash out.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: I'm feeling so beautiful.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: Fuck it.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: It'll be poetic.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Take me now.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: Uh Sam, this next one.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, friends of the show, Honey.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Um, this song is called Life.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: You only get one.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: And I think what makes this song quite beautiful is that it's more the lyricism than the song itself.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: It's quite a simple message.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: You only get one life, use it well.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: YOLO.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Enjoy it.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fuck it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Just be a goodish kind of person and treat yourself well, is kind of the uh the idea of this song.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: But the message is so simple, and I think the way that they use the instrumentation to like reinforce that message, like everything is really simple.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: It's like this piano, a little bit of like guitar and a little bit of harmonica, then just some like random percussion kind of thrown in there.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: They don't overdo it.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: It's simplistic in the arrangement, it's simplistic in the message, and I think that's what makes this so beautiful.
- 37:13SPEAKER_05: So good, it's so good, it's so good.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: So good, so good, so good, to score to the scene when you only get one.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Just hitting the old Bob Dylan at the end there.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: The Bob Adildo.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Uh Sam, I would say the opposite of Honey.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: This song is beautiful because it's so big and intense and over the top, full of stuff.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: Hell yeah.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: It's full of stuff.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Like a submarine.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Just fucking torpedoes.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: The so it's it's pipe organs, Sam.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: It's these big booming drums.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: It is Florence Welsh absolutely giving it a hell of a number on the uh on the vocals.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: And I think this is probably the closest I think you could get to like for me at least, like a religious experience in music, because like I feel like this is what it would have been like to like a medieval peasant and go into church.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Like, this is so outside your everyday that you're like, you're like, whoa, this is just intense, and like you have a like it just forces an emotion out of you.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: Uh this is Shake It Out by Florence and Sam the machine.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: Shake it out.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Yes, very very much so.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Her vocals are always fucked, though.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: She's so good.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: It's ridiculous how talented she is.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: It's forked.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: But really, like when you when you hear her music and you're like just how?
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Powerhouse.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: Powerhouse.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Powerhouse.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: If she was a house, she'd be in New Farm.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: The powerhouse.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: The powerhouse.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: If she was a tradesman.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: She'd be an electrician.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Very possibly.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: So what's what's beautiful you do?
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Well, I find some of the most beautiful songs of all time to be very sad and evocative.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: So you've gone from for a bit more of a a neutral playing field.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: I've gone for the fuck yeah, let's time to die.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: Let's reminisce on my own hand.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's reminisce on life and like think about all the happy and sad memories.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: I think sad music can bring out happy memories.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Or it's like a nostalgia or a reminiscing.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like a like a the like a melancholy, potentially.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna start with a radio head song.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Oh yes.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Um Let Down, which is from OK Computer.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: Um really has been in his radio head shit recently.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: When they hit right, they hit good.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: It's just a pity they released so much meh.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: But uh Let Down's gonna be one of their best songs.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: If you watched The Bear, it was in that.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Um, but I'm just gonna I'm gonna play you a little bit of a snippet of the the bridge.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Let me down.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: Sometimes Tom York needs to just call it Tom.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: Tom.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: Poor Tom.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Uh the next song, Maxwell, I think, is one of the best love songs ever written.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: And that is.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna play it to you.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: Play it, just play it for me.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: I'm surprised it wasn't in yours.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: Sing a new.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Man, I love parachutes.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: That is the album, correct.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Ding ding ding.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Um just romantic.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: Smooth, simple.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Most people's wedding song.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: Very most.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: We've taken a survey of a hundred people, and eighty percent of them have that as their wedding song.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Max will have something niche.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: The artist niche is gonna play.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Fuck yeah.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: She's sick.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: Um the next one again, a song that you ask anyone um who knows anything about sad, beautiful, melancholy music, they're probably gonna play this one.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: It's Lord Horen.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Lord Huron?
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: Horon?
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: Heron.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: H U R O N.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Huron.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: Like the lake.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Lord Huron.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Close enough.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: Lord Heron the bird.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's the night we met.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: You you'll know it instantly.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Very sad.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: Very beautiful.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Speaking of sad, the next one, one of my favorite songs of all time.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: I'm seeing him in December.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: I am or in November.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N' Roses.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: How good's retirement?
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: Um, it is Joji, famous for writing an emo anthem.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and this song, I'm gonna scream my little language out too.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Oh the last one, Maxwell, is um an artist I am surprised you didn't bring, to be perfectly honest.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: I was preparing for this.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: It's M eighty three.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: It's from Hurry Up We're Dreaming.
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, an unbelievable record.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Nearly perfect.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: I you know what?
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: I agree, in the sense that I think if you were to take the best songs out of it, you've got a perfect album.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: I think too long.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Nearly perfect.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: If you if you took probably I'd say the ten best songs off that record, and I'd be hard pressed to say which ten of the right the ten, but I feel like I could I could definitely get to like six, but anyway, and then put that as one record.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Well, a song that hits every time.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: My tears would be coming to C.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: Someone once described that album by saying that almost every single one of those songs could be the last song they play on Earth.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: It feels so dystopian and like end of the world.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: That's the perfect way to put it.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: Like the meteorite is hitting.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: This is what's playing.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Outro.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: Outro wait.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Probably not Midnight City, but your fucking bulk of it did though.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: Just going out to the saxophone solo at on the end of Midnight City.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: You've got reunion, where the boats go.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: Steve McQueen's got a vibe to it as well.
- 45:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a lot you could choose.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm sure people can do whatever they please with those ten beautiful songs.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Take that information, stick it up your jumper.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: Uh do it the way you want.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: I would recommend if an asteroid's gonna hit and wipe out the entire human uh population.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: M eighty three is a safe choice.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe three.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe three.
