Have you ever been to one? Luna: Oh, I love markets! The fresh smell of bread and flowers. But I need the right phrases to actually buy things. Lucas: Exactly. Anyway, back to the market! What's the first phrase? Lucas: Let's say you see some beautiful apples. You walk up to the stall and say: Ik wil appels kopen. That means 'I want to buy apples.' Let's hear it. Luna: Ik wil appels kopen. Lucas: Perfect. Now, the seller might ask: Hoeveel wilt u? — 'How many would you like?' But first you need to ask the price. So you say: Hoeveel kost een kilo? 'How much is a kilo?' Try that. Luna: Hoeveel kost een kilo? Lucas: Great. Now, imagine you want to taste one first. You can ask: Mag ik proeven? 'May I taste?' This is very common at markets. Luna: Mag ik proeven? Lucas: Yes. And if the price is too high, you can say: Dat is duur. 'That is expensive.' Let's hear that. Luna: Dat is duur. Lucas: Or you could ask for a discount: Is er korting? 'Is there a discount?' Luna: Is er korting? Oh, I like that one. Lucas: Let me play the seller. You come to my apple stall. You say: Ik wil appels kopen. Luna: Ik wil appels kopen. Lucas: That's three euros per kilo. Luna: Hoeveel kost een kilo? Lucas: Ooh, I just said it. But that's okay. Three euros per kilo. Luna: Mag ik proeven? Lucas: Of course. Here, try one. Luna: Yeah, they're good. But dat is duur. Is er korting? Lucas: Nice! You used two phrases. The seller might say: Sorry, geen korting. 'Sorry, no discount.' Luna: Ah, worth a try. Lucas: Absolutely. Let's practice the whole conversation again. I'll be the seller. You start. Luna: Ik wil appels kopen.
