- 3:02Speaker 6: is episode nine, a season one update. Truth will reveal itself.
- 3:17Speaker 4: In the fifteen months since Lee Clark's and Josh Story's exonerations,
- 3:21Speaker 4: we've spent a lot of time with both of them,
- 3:23Speaker 4: and we thought y'all want to hear from them too
- 3:25Speaker 4: about what life has been like since they were freed, and,
- 3:28Speaker 4: as is common for exoneries, life after release has been
- 3:32Speaker 4: filled with lots of high points, but also lots of Low's.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Life is not easy after being behind bars for twenty
- 3:37Speaker 4: five years, especially when you were a kid and you
- 3:40Speaker 4: went in. You'll hear later from Josh, Dory, Kevin and
- 3:44Speaker 4: Decenda caught up with him, but first we'll hear from
- 3:47Speaker 4: Lee Clark.
- 3:48Speaker 7: Hey, Hey, how y'all doing.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I caught up with Lee over the phone, so excuse
- 3:54Speaker 4: the audio, but I talked to him about what it
- 3:57Speaker 4: was like to be exonerated and walk free after twenty
- 3:59Speaker 4: five years behind bars.
- 4:03Speaker 8: That day right there, it was it was a fun day.
- 4:07Speaker 8: It was the most exciting day of my life. But
- 4:10Speaker 8: it was it was just sighting and also at the
- 4:13Speaker 8: same time, fish makes any sense to you, It was
- 4:14Speaker 8: a lot kind of being thrown to a blender that was
- 4:16Speaker 8: going wide open.
- 4:20Speaker 4: It was so crazy on the outside. I can't imagine
- 4:22Speaker 4: how crazy it wasn't there for you?
- 4:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean you're sitting there. I mean, yeah, all
- 4:27Speaker 8: of it is really good. I mean all the emotions
- 4:29Speaker 8: that were running through me was just nothing but pure joy.
- 4:31Speaker 8: But it's going into all of it like you've just
- 4:34Speaker 8: been thrown into a blender. I mean, it was. It
- 4:36Speaker 8: was a lot. It was a whole lot to take.
- 4:38Speaker 4: In that evening, all of Lee and Josh's supporters had
- 4:42Speaker 4: gone to the Flood County jail to greet them as
- 4:44Speaker 4: they finally walked out.
- 4:46Speaker 8: Yeah, it was late at night when we got out
- 4:48Speaker 8: of there.
- 4:49Speaker 7: Oh yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 8: I come out to them doors and my family was
- 4:52Speaker 8: standing out there. And the eruption I heard when I
- 4:55Speaker 8: come out to them doors and the first person that
- 4:57Speaker 8: I ran into that was standing there waiting on me
- 4:59Speaker 8: right run on the line with my grandmother. I'll never
- 5:03Speaker 8: forget that day right there him.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I got you, I got you.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Since then, Lee has been adapting to the reality of
- 5:21Speaker 4: having to restart his life from scratch. The last time
- 5:24Speaker 4: he was free, he was eighteen years old. It was
- 5:26Speaker 4: nineteen ninety seven, and life was very different.
- 5:30Speaker 8: Been doing good since I've been out. It's been a
- 5:32Speaker 8: bit of a challenge adjusting to certain things where they
- 5:35Speaker 8: are today. But I mean, thanks have been going good
- 5:38Speaker 8: with me though. I mean, it's been a lot of
- 5:40Speaker 8: stuff fast years since this went by. Had it really
- 5:42Speaker 8: belonged my mind? A lot of high points, A whole
- 5:46Speaker 8: lot of high points. I can't say that.
- 5:48Speaker 9: Does it feel like time's going faster now?
- 5:50Speaker 8: Oh, he's densively going faster for a little career. This
- 5:52Speaker 8: year that I've been out, I look back at it
- 5:54Speaker 8: during it seemed like a year. It seems like I've
- 5:56Speaker 8: been out lot through three months. I just wonder where
- 5:59Speaker 8: the year went to. But I had went through a
- 6:01Speaker 8: lot in the past year.
- 6:02Speaker 7: I lost my.
- 6:04Speaker 8: Grandmother her anniversary of hers It was just here, but
- 6:07Speaker 8: we'll go on for worse.
- 6:08Speaker 9: Sixteenth Yeah, you had nothing came to you easy.
- 6:12Speaker 4: You got home from being in prison twenty five years
- 6:15Speaker 4: and suddenly your caretaker to your diying grandma.
- 6:18Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, it's pretty real. But I'm glad I did
- 6:22Speaker 8: get spend a quality of time with it though. That
- 6:24Speaker 8: was good. I know something she wanted and I've been
- 6:27Speaker 8: wanting for a long time too. Even though we got
- 6:29Speaker 8: it under the circumstances, we got it and there I
- 6:31Speaker 8: was still thankful to get it though.
- 6:33Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm glad you were out for it.
- 6:35Speaker 8: Yeah, me too.
- 6:36Speaker 9: Do people recognize you around town?
- 6:39Speaker 8: Oh yeah, it seemed. Look here, where I go, I'll
- 6:42Speaker 8: run into people and thank you telling me, Oh, we
- 6:44Speaker 8: are much fodcast. We're so glad you're out, he said.
- 6:47Speaker 8: Where I go, I'll get it from everybody. It's just
- 6:50Speaker 8: it's good though. I love hearing it because I love
- 6:52Speaker 8: the people finally know the truth of you all say it.
- 6:55Speaker 8: I waited a long time for this to come out
- 6:57Speaker 8: and out to decide I can. I can't even tell
- 7:00Speaker 8: you how thankful I am. I mean, I just I
- 7:04Speaker 8: sit here and look at it. I still I just
- 7:08Speaker 8: wonder sometimes I can't just want to tell somebody to
- 7:10Speaker 8: paints made really really hard to make sure that I
- 7:12Speaker 8: ain't dreaming.
- 7:14Speaker 9: What's been the number one hardest thing.
- 7:16Speaker 8: Is the hardest thing for me? It has been money.
- 7:18Speaker 8: Since I've been out. That's been the hardest thing for me.
- 7:20Speaker 9: Just making ends meet, to survive day to day.
- 7:23Speaker 8: Yeah, because I mean I can't do it out here.
- 7:25Speaker 8: I mean not making the money I make it, and
- 7:27Speaker 8: I mean what I do. I mean that's that's because
- 7:29Speaker 8: I mean, I said I was sent somewhere for twenty
- 7:31Speaker 8: five years. I wasn't nowt here. It didn't good chance
- 7:32Speaker 8: to get no experience at all these jobs and stuff.
- 7:34Speaker 8: So therefore I can't go into a job. I can't
- 7:36Speaker 8: get through jobs making good money because I don't have
- 7:38Speaker 8: the experience. I'm making the experience now. But how many look,
- 7:42Speaker 8: we're talking about a year, how many we're talking about
- 7:44Speaker 8: people that have got fifteen twenty years experience under their
- 7:46Speaker 8: bills and being age I met forty five, I should
- 7:51Speaker 8: have that experience under my bill, but I don't. That's
- 7:54Speaker 8: what you deal with on daily basis though.
- 7:56Speaker 7: I mean it's I.
- 7:58Speaker 9: Know, when you first got out for a while, you
- 8:00Speaker 9: were working night shifts.
- 8:02Speaker 8: Yeah right there. It was not working at all. I
- 8:05Speaker 8: tried to night shit for three months and I felt
- 8:07Speaker 8: like I was turning into a zombie every time I
- 8:09Speaker 8: changed shit and getting ready to get off.
- 8:11Speaker 9: So what are you doing now.
- 8:13Speaker 8: Well, No, I'm working out really uh dollars.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Now.
- 8:16Speaker 8: I like it out there. I work maintenance out there,
- 8:18Speaker 8: drum maintenance and stuff. But I'm also thinking in back
- 8:21Speaker 8: of my mind the whole time I'm doing this job,
- 8:23Speaker 8: working this job, I feeling myself. Man, here it is,
- 8:25Speaker 8: you're forty four, fan me forty five. You should be
- 8:28Speaker 8: a supervisor somewhere. You should be maybe running your own
- 8:31Speaker 8: business somewhere. You're supposed to be doing something. And I
- 8:34Speaker 8: don't get me wrong, it's not I'm not complaining. I
- 8:36Speaker 8: mean i am, but I'm not, you know what I mean.
- 8:38Speaker 8: I'm thankful to have the job I've got, but still
- 8:40Speaker 8: I love to have something to make it a lot
- 8:42Speaker 8: more money. I mean, I love the lot the rest
- 8:45Speaker 8: of my life heading in right now, there's some things
- 8:48Speaker 8: in my life that I would like to be better
- 8:50Speaker 8: right now. Yeah, definitely. And my biggest thing is I
- 8:53Speaker 8: think it's probably everybody's biggest things, miss finances me. I mean,
- 8:56Speaker 8: it's it would be different than I've been out here
- 8:59Speaker 8: all these years. You know, I feel like it wouldn't
- 9:01Speaker 8: be different. I know it would be. I ain't convinced
- 9:03Speaker 8: that if I've been here all these years, i'd be
- 9:04Speaker 8: doing what I'm doing now. I'd have my own business
- 9:07Speaker 8: somewhere right now, doing my own thing, because I know me,
- 9:10Speaker 8: I know what kind of guy I am, so I
- 9:11Speaker 8: know what be successful somewhere right now doing something.
- 9:15Speaker 9: So I know you've done some traveling a little bit. Anyway.
- 9:19Speaker 8: Oh yeah, Well I went out the bingis out there
- 9:24Speaker 8: and the salaries conference after I first got out back
- 9:27Speaker 8: and I think it was Marshall last year went out
- 9:30Speaker 8: there that that was really good to go out there
- 9:32Speaker 8: and made all these honorees. It wasn't just from Georgia.
- 9:35Speaker 8: There were all over the United States, people from different states,
- 9:39Speaker 8: and just to meet the different innocent projects that were
- 9:41Speaker 8: out there and stuff. I mean, just being in the
- 9:43Speaker 8: room with all that stuff going on, it's mind blowing.
- 9:46Speaker 8: I mean you can't understand it till you're in the
- 9:48Speaker 8: room and actually feel it for yourself. And then we
- 9:52Speaker 8: went down there to Orlando, Me and Amanda went down
- 9:55Speaker 8: there with you and just sending them Kevin. We went
- 9:57Speaker 8: down there for the crime con down there. That was
- 10:00Speaker 8: a good experience right there.
- 10:01Speaker 9: Did you just call it crimea con?
- 10:04Speaker 8: That's what there was. It was it crimeos con wasn't. No,
- 10:07Speaker 8: it's not a crime, con is it. No? Oh yeah,
- 10:11Speaker 8: that's what it is.
- 10:12Speaker 9: Okay, And you're going You're going this year Atnnison's conference.
- 10:14Speaker 8: Right, yeah, that in New Orders. Yeah, yeah, it's gonna
- 10:17Speaker 8: be fun there and looking forward to that. But yeah,
- 10:20Speaker 8: I even went up to New York too, went up
- 10:22Speaker 8: there in a sing just sitting there, Kevin up her
- 10:24Speaker 8: saying their office up here, and we went uh. We
- 10:27Speaker 8: also went to Savannah, so saw you down there. That
- 10:31Speaker 8: was fun trip.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I asked Lee what his life had been like fifteen
- 10:35Speaker 4: months ago when he was still in prison and uncertain
- 10:38Speaker 4: if he'd ever be coming home.
- 10:40Speaker 8: Yeah, my days in prison, you spent citizen just the
- 10:43Speaker 8: day waking up, trying to force myself to go through
- 10:45Speaker 8: another day of this, telling them, I said, well, you
- 10:48Speaker 8: got to push yourself through another day of it, and
- 10:51Speaker 8: my brain sitting there telling me they want to do
- 10:53Speaker 8: another day of it. And I sit there and argue
- 10:54Speaker 8: with myself all day, back and forth, back and forth,
- 10:57Speaker 8: until around lunch time, I figne, got me about two
- 10:59Speaker 8: or three cups coffee, I go get my work out
- 11:01Speaker 8: in and if finally go get my shower, and you're
- 11:02Speaker 8: getting bet that's routine, and there ain't no routine, not
- 11:08Speaker 8: for an innocent man shitting mind bars. That is not
- 11:10Speaker 8: a routine to have every day. That routine ruight there,
- 11:13Speaker 8: drive and trazy. You got too much time on he hands,
- 11:15Speaker 8: too much time to think. You think about on everything
- 11:18Speaker 8: you missing out on, think about all the way he's
- 11:20Speaker 8: being done wrong. That's all you can think about, over
- 11:23Speaker 8: and over again. It's the endless cycle, never ends, but
- 11:29Speaker 8: thankfully though.
- 11:30Speaker 7: It is.
- 11:32Speaker 8: Some people though it.
- 11:34Speaker 9: Never ends for have you been listening to season two prou.
- 11:37Speaker 8: Oh yeah, I've been listening to it. And what happened
- 11:41Speaker 8: to Tie that went out? There was dead wrong? Jake too?
- 11:45Speaker 8: What happened about for them? But Tie? That was this
- 11:49Speaker 8: said wrong?
- 11:50Speaker 7: Right?
- 11:50Speaker 9: There can't be fixed.
- 11:52Speaker 8: No, it can't never be fixed. It can't be set
- 11:54Speaker 8: right the man. It's lost being took for him and
- 11:57Speaker 8: an innocent man sitting mind bars, and it's lost being
- 11:59Speaker 8: took from there's no I mean, there's nothing you can
- 12:01Speaker 8: do to make it right. You can't never make it right.
- 12:05Speaker 8: Nobody can't.
- 12:06Speaker 7: It's just that wrong.
- 12:07Speaker 9: What are your thoughts on Jake and what's happened to him?
- 12:10Speaker 8: I think it's a tragedy, So I think that's a
- 12:12Speaker 8: little tragedy. I look at Jake and I hear a
- 12:16Speaker 8: lot of Jay way he talks way where he was
- 12:18Speaker 8: when he was younger. Jake reminds me of me in
- 12:21Speaker 8: some ways. And but Jay said, California kid, that's a
- 12:24Speaker 8: lot of stuff we don't have in common. But I
- 12:26Speaker 8: do see some of something myself in it.
- 12:28Speaker 9: I did you. Y'all are very different people, but I
- 12:31Speaker 9: do see some similarities.
- 12:32Speaker 8: New Yeah, I see a little bit of myself in
- 12:35Speaker 8: him and some of the stuff I see in him.
- 12:36Speaker 8: And I just listening to stuff he said, take me back,
- 12:40Speaker 8: and it's been a I can't imagine what it's been
- 12:43Speaker 8: a lot for him because I sit there. I looked
- 12:45Speaker 8: at this, all the stuff. I mean, I know for
- 12:49Speaker 8: the fact that they were in love. You know what
- 12:50Speaker 8: I'm saying, Oh you knew you could tell you love
- 12:55Speaker 8: with now? I mean, and you know, I sit there
- 12:56Speaker 8: and I look at that right there, and I'm would
- 13:00Speaker 8: it feels about the love of woman because I got
- 13:01Speaker 8: one sitting wrapside right here. I love her something dearer
- 13:05Speaker 8: and I can only think or it would be like
- 13:07Speaker 8: being Jay Shoes. It's just sit behind the bars, knowing
- 13:11Speaker 8: that you didn't do it, and they excusing me of
- 13:14Speaker 8: killing her because I've been where he's at, so I
- 13:17Speaker 8: put myself in the shoes. So I tell you right
- 13:19Speaker 8: now that right there, because's real deep. It's like a
- 13:23Speaker 8: dagger in the hour.
- 13:24Speaker 9: Is it hard to listen to it?
- 13:27Speaker 7: Oh?
- 13:27Speaker 8: Yeah, it's real hard to listen to it. It's really
- 13:31Speaker 8: hard to listen to it when you know exactly what
- 13:33Speaker 8: he's going through, when you know where he's at because
- 13:37Speaker 8: you've been there. See, it's hard to listen to it.
- 13:40Speaker 8: My heart brace for it.
- 13:44Speaker 9: And first he's feeling the thing you didn't have to
- 13:45Speaker 9: ever deal with, which was the rape charge.
- 13:48Speaker 8: Oh yeah, you've got that jacket. I'm telling you what
- 13:51Speaker 8: it did for you in there. It ain't the fun
- 13:53Speaker 8: place to be. It markshes what it does. I've seen
- 13:56Speaker 8: it firsthand behind I've been behind the walls and I've
- 13:58Speaker 8: washed it firsthand and and action, and I know what
- 14:01Speaker 8: it does. And it's never pretty sad. And you don't
- 14:04Speaker 8: want to ask one place right there that teaches you
- 14:07Speaker 8: to build up walls. You don't never let that wall down.
- 14:12Speaker 8: You don't never want to let yourself build too much
- 14:15Speaker 8: open there because you already know the feeling of what
- 14:17Speaker 8: it feels about to have a snatch from me. And
- 14:19Speaker 8: when you feel that one time, trust me, you don't
- 14:21Speaker 8: want to feel it again. So you got to put
- 14:23Speaker 8: no walls so you don't have to feel it again. No,
- 14:27Speaker 8: you can't never let your yard down. You don't never
- 14:30Speaker 8: get a good night's sleep. You won't know where the
- 14:33Speaker 8: good night's sleep is.
- 14:34Speaker 7: I did not.
- 14:34Speaker 8: I didn't know what one was twenty five years. When
- 14:37Speaker 8: I walked out that first night, I said, oh God mighty.
- 14:40Speaker 8: When I laid down, I woke. I was such a
- 14:42Speaker 8: deep sleep. I woke next morning I was tripping out.
- 14:45Speaker 8: I was over my dad's laid on this blow up mattress.
- 14:47Speaker 7: I said.
- 14:48Speaker 8: I woke up flipping out. I said, what is that noise?
- 14:50Speaker 8: It took me minute the rich shirt. It was birds
- 14:52Speaker 8: outside Turkey. That's all hard.
- 14:55Speaker 9: I was sleeping on, like koffee, blow up bad in
- 14:58Speaker 9: your dad.
- 14:58Speaker 8: Don't blow up man? Yeah? Any better in the prison, man, though.
- 15:03Speaker 9: If you could tell something, that would it be.
- 15:05Speaker 8: I was just telling you I lose old man. I
- 15:08Speaker 8: know it's hard to hold on too. I know because
- 15:11Speaker 8: I went through it for twenty five years. Man, it's
- 15:14Speaker 8: real hard to hold on to and it gets real
- 15:16Speaker 8: thing it sometimes, but you gotta have faith, have hope. Man,
- 15:20Speaker 8: it's gonna it's gonna work out, and it. Don't never
- 15:22Speaker 8: give up, don't never stop fighting. I'll never stop fighting.
- 15:25Speaker 8: I'll never do that. I'll never give in on it.
- 15:28Speaker 8: I'll never stop fighting. You stay hit it, you stay
- 15:30Speaker 8: have faith. It's gonna work out. God knows. I mean never,
- 15:34Speaker 8: so many times I just want to give up going
- 15:35Speaker 8: the road, to slice my throat and it just let
- 15:37Speaker 8: myself to bleed to this right there in the floor.
- 15:40Speaker 8: That's what I wanted to do a lot of times.
- 15:42Speaker 8: But I didn't never do that. I stayed here, strong
- 15:44Speaker 8: about it, kept telling myself just one day at a time,
- 15:47Speaker 8: one day at a time, and I'm gonna make it.
- 15:49Speaker 8: I'm gonna keep it. I'm gonna make it. I'm gonna
- 15:51Speaker 8: do it one day at a time.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And now that he has a connection with the outside
- 15:56Speaker 4: the world and he knows people knows his story, I mean,
- 15:59Speaker 4: was that for you?
- 15:59Speaker 9: Was that?
- 16:00Speaker 7: Uh?
- 16:01Speaker 9: Was that a comfort? Just knowing even before we knew
- 16:03Speaker 9: where it was going, just knowing people.
- 16:05Speaker 8: Knew, just knowing the mean that people was gonna know
- 16:08Speaker 8: what I would had to say right here, and was
- 16:10Speaker 8: gonna hear my side of it, find me because nobody
- 16:13Speaker 8: never heard nothing from me.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Finally having the chance to tell their stories and to
- 16:21Speaker 4: have what happened to them he brought to light changed
- 16:23Speaker 4: everything for Lee and Josh and to change things for
- 16:27Speaker 4: some other people as well. So you mentioned your lady
- 16:34Speaker 4: a couple of times ago. How about you introduce us.
- 16:38Speaker 8: Okay, hold on this second here, can you get here
- 16:41Speaker 8: in here?

- 17:00Speaker 4: heard from her before. Her brother was Brian Bowling, the
- 17:03Speaker 4: boy that Lee and Josh were wrongfully convicted of killing.
- 17:10Speaker 9: So things have changed since uh season one, haven't there?
- 17:15Speaker 8: Oh?
- 17:17Speaker 9: Well, I know the two of you knew each other before, Yeah,
- 17:19Speaker 9: because we.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Talked about it.
- 17:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:23Speaker 4: And there was one thing that we left out of
- 17:25Speaker 4: the show that you told me about how he'd asked
- 17:28Speaker 4: you out and you said no.
- 17:29Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I need to tell you that. Yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 10: And he did way before everything, Yeah, way before everything that.
- 17:41Speaker 8: Was my wild days here though she didn't want nothing

- 21:57Speaker 4: When we first began investigating for season one, we had
- 22:00Speaker 4: had known something was not quite right with the way
- 22:02Speaker 4: her brother's alleged killers had been prosecuted. Things had not
- 22:06Speaker 4: entirely added up, but she'd never doubted that Lee and
- 22:09Speaker 4: Josh were guilty somehow of killing Brian.
- 22:13Speaker 9: I mean, you went from knowing that Lee killed your brother.
- 22:18Speaker 10: Yeah, and knowing that Payne was nowhere around had nothing
- 22:23Speaker 10: to do with it. And to be honest, I had
- 22:27Speaker 10: a lot, a lot of hate for Lee, and I
- 22:31Speaker 10: don't know, whenever I found out the truth and everything,
- 22:35Speaker 10: you know, all that hate turned to nothing but love
- 22:38Speaker 10: for him, and I don't know, it just kept getting
- 22:42Speaker 10: stronger and stronger, I mean, you know, and we wasn't
- 22:46Speaker 10: even talking or anything, and it just kept growing and
- 22:52Speaker 10: bamed there.
- 22:53Speaker 9: It was, I know.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I mean the first time I met, I was so
- 22:59Speaker 4: gratefully you talked to us, But it was hard for
- 23:02Speaker 4: you to relive this and hard for you to even
- 23:05Speaker 4: consider that people had questions about what was going on.
- 23:08Speaker 9: With this case. Yeah, and I know you were upset
- 23:11Speaker 9: at times that you always.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Coming to mind.
- 23:15Speaker 10: Yeah, I did, because you know, I was hearing things
- 23:18Speaker 10: for the first time.
- 23:20Speaker 8: You know that I had never heard.
- 23:22Speaker 10: Before because I was just seventeen when all that happened,
- 23:26Speaker 10: and Mom and Dad they tried to keep me shielded
- 23:31Speaker 10: from a lot of stuff. So there was a lot
- 23:33Speaker 10: of stuff that I didn't even know that had happened
- 23:36Speaker 10: or was even going on.
- 23:38Speaker 9: So you learned it with everyone else.
- 23:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I sure did.
- 23:43Speaker 10: And you know, I really opened my eyes up to
- 23:49Speaker 10: how things really was. I mean, it was to the
- 23:53Speaker 10: point that it made me seek for a little while.
- 23:57Speaker 10: But then whenever I had listened to everything, and at
- 24:05Speaker 10: that one point when I watched the video of Dallas,
- 24:09Speaker 10: you know that, right, there's what did the turning point
- 24:12Speaker 10: for me.
- 24:13Speaker 9: When Dallas was tasing the tied up in me at
- 24:16Speaker 9: the jail.
- 24:17Speaker 10: Yeah, Yeah, because you know, I guess I had to
- 24:21Speaker 10: see it from my own eyes to believe.
- 24:24Speaker 9: He was capable of doing that kind of thing.
- 24:26Speaker 10: Yeah, so I knew if he was capable of doing that,
- 24:32Speaker 10: then I knew he was really capable of doing what
- 24:35Speaker 10: he did.
- 24:37Speaker 9: And then of course heard about poor Charlie.
- 24:39Speaker 8: Yeah, poor old Charlie.
- 24:40Speaker 10: I mean that right there was just that was just
- 24:43Speaker 10: another heartbreak itself. I mean, yeah, I know Charlie mo
- 24:49Speaker 10: entire life.
- 24:51Speaker 8: I mean, it really hurt. He used him like he did.
- 24:56Speaker 8: You know, it just wasn't right.
- 24:58Speaker 10: And I'm glad we got in mine to come y'all
- 25:01Speaker 10: got him to come and talk with him, because that
- 25:04Speaker 10: right there, he made things so much.
- 25:06Speaker 8: Clearer for every company. Yeah, he still blows my mind
- 25:10Speaker 8: thinking about it today.
- 25:14Speaker 9: Now. I know that after you got out lead, you
- 25:17Speaker 9: didn't see Amanda for a while.
- 25:19Speaker 8: No, I didn't. Uh, it was a few months after
- 25:21Speaker 8: I got out. I think I've been out closer too much.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Do One night, le our uncle Michael, our aunt Sandy,
- 25:29Speaker 8: we all went out there to Third and we had
- 25:32Speaker 8: such a good time at night. It just things just
- 25:34Speaker 8: clicked for us. I mean that's when it started for us.
- 25:37Speaker 8: I really believe. I mean it did for me that
- 25:39Speaker 8: night at least.
- 25:40Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, it has been hard dating someone
- 25:45Speaker 4: he's been out of the world.
- 25:47Speaker 10: For so long sometimes, but you know, Kate kind of
- 25:52Speaker 10: got the hang of everything.
- 25:54Speaker 8: You know, I need to kick out at me on something.
- 26:00Speaker 4: But you've ever guessed this to be your life when
- 26:03Speaker 4: I just came to talk to you.
- 26:05Speaker 10: No, I never thought I would argue up and down
- 26:09Speaker 10: and said, Okay, what'll happen?
- 26:13Speaker 8: Everything has its place in time, and now.
- 26:15Speaker 6: It's the time.
- 26:17Speaker 8: Yes, it is. It is definite. I love her very
- 26:21Speaker 8: much and I love him a lot.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Well, it's been quite the year for both of you,
- 26:28Speaker 4: and I know things we're going to get easier as
- 26:30Speaker 4: the time goes on.
- 26:31Speaker 9: The first year is always going to be the hardest.
- 26:34Speaker 8: Oah, yeah, well at first one behind me tell you.
- 26:38Speaker 8: I'm telling you I enjoyed. I enjoyed it, but it
- 26:40Speaker 8: was a rough one. Note I ain't a lot. I
- 26:43Speaker 8: enjoyed it, but it gave me some knocks along the way,
- 26:46Speaker 8: and I do make some knots well in prison.
- 26:49Speaker 4: It was hard, but you had the same heart over
- 26:51Speaker 4: and over again for so many years. Yeah, and suddenly
- 26:54Speaker 4: you're out and You've got a new kind of difficult.
- 26:57Speaker 7: Yeah, oh, different ball of.
- 26:59Speaker 9: What navigating health insurance, navigating all like.
- 27:04Speaker 8: That was really croft. There's not even have any he assures,
- 27:07Speaker 8: that's been real filmer buried. Yeah, it's been a good year.
- 27:11Speaker 8: I just hope it he's getting murder.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Lee and Josh's case was actually the third case I've
- 27:19Speaker 4: worked on down in Floyd County. Before that, I'd also
- 27:22Speaker 4: worked on Mitcham Reeves's case for a series on my
- 27:25Speaker 4: podcast Undisclosed, though Mitcham had been released from prison before
- 27:29Speaker 4: I was born, so I couldn't help him much with that,
- 27:32Speaker 4: but I was able to help him find out who
- 27:34Speaker 4: had really committed the murder that he'd been sent to
- 27:36Speaker 4: prison for. The very first case I'd worked on in
- 27:39Speaker 4: Floyd County, though, was for Joey Watkins. That was season
- 27:42Speaker 4: two of Undisclosed back in twenty sixteen, and his case
- 27:46Speaker 4: had been slowly meandering its way through the legal system
- 27:48Speaker 4: since then. In twenty twenty two, his conviction was finally
- 27:53Speaker 4: overturned based on what we discovered while investigating for the
- 27:55Speaker 4: podcast years before, but Joey was still behind bar because
- 28:01Speaker 4: the Floyd County DA's office said they planned to retry him.
- 28:04Speaker 4: But it had been Joey who'd first introduced me to
- 28:07Speaker 4: Lee Clark. And yet now Lee was already home, well,
- 28:11Speaker 4: Joey was still behind bars. On the night that Lee
- 28:15Speaker 4: and Josh were finally released from the Floyd County jail,
- 28:18Speaker 4: there had been a welcome home dinner plan for them,
- 28:20Speaker 4: and we've been driving down there when my phone rang.
- 28:27Speaker 4: I remember we have from your dad's trap, drive down
- 28:30Speaker 4: there from jail, and my chance Joey called me.
- 28:33Speaker 7: Remember that?
- 28:33Speaker 9: Oh yeah, I remember handing my phone over to you.
- 28:36Speaker 8: I remember what I told him that. I told him, Look, brother,
- 28:39Speaker 8: he come and you gonna move out behind me Alba's
- 28:44Speaker 8: Correctional Training Center to refuse his pre call. You may
- 28:47Speaker 8: start the conversation.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Now, Hey, Joey, Hey, what's up? Brother?
- 28:54Speaker 8: Hey? What's going on?
- 28:56Speaker 7: You know who this is, don't you? No?
- 28:58Speaker 8: I don't know who?
- 29:02Speaker 7: Where you are?
- 29:03Speaker 3: Now we're driving away from the jail.
- 29:05Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, what's going on?
- 29:08Speaker 12: Brother?
- 29:09Speaker 8: Hoping to be where you're at.
- 29:10Speaker 7: You're going away, brother, You're gonna get here.
- 29:12Speaker 8: We're gonna get you here.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Watch walk out of these stam doors out just a
- 29:16Speaker 3: few more months.
- 29:19Speaker 8: Drama.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I didn't told you this before, man, and I'm gonna
- 29:22Speaker 3: tell it to you the rest of your life.
- 29:23Speaker 7: Oh all this to you, man, we did this.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Bull dog is sitting right beside me, right here, and.
- 29:29Speaker 7: She's a bulldog. She don't play the radio.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Joey told me at first, you didn't want to talk
- 29:33Speaker 3: to me. Yeah, you know, I was a little nervous
- 29:38Speaker 3: about talking anybody. You didn't want to trust nobody, did you.
- 29:40Speaker 8: I had a hard time trust a lot of people. Man.
- 29:43Speaker 8: You need to get out, man and do your think.
- 29:47Speaker 4: We almost didn't think they were gonna make it out
- 29:49Speaker 4: tonight because the courts order came so late.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Jail and the GDC were like, well, we'll wait till tomorrow.
- 29:56Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm glad you're I'm glad they made it too.
- 30:04Speaker 13: But yeah, hopefully, hopefully I won't before. Mind, how you
- 30:08Speaker 13: ain't the only brother You're coming.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Man, give it a few months, lee and I'll be
- 30:11Speaker 3: back here of the jail. I'm gonna be there waiting
- 30:14Speaker 3: on you, brother.
- 30:14Speaker 7: We're gonna have to shake the bar lousa.
- 30:18Speaker 13: I'm glad you're home, That's all I can say.
- 30:20Speaker 4: It was less than a month later, on January third,
- 30:28Speaker 4: twenty twenty three, when Joey's attorneys won him bond and
- 30:32Speaker 4: he came home too. Then in September, Floyd County decided
- 30:36Speaker 4: not to retry him and dismissed all charges.
- 30:39Speaker 8: And it is Jackal come to be just like that
- 30:41Speaker 8: over there he ride behind me.
- 30:43Speaker 9: He didn't believe you. I could hear it in his voice.
- 30:45Speaker 8: I knew it because I felt. Because one thing you
- 30:47Speaker 8: can't hide, you can't keep the truth of your favorite
- 30:50Speaker 8: And truth's gonna reveal itself.

- 31:39Speaker 15: Sometime in the early eighties, Ario Speedwagon's airplane made an
- 31:43Speaker 15: unannounced middle of the night landing.
- 31:46Speaker 16: This is my friend Kyle McLaughlin, the star of Twin Peaks,
- 31:49Speaker 16: and he's telling me about how he discovered a real
- 31:51Speaker 16: life Twin Peaks in rural North Carolina, not far from
- 31:54Speaker 16: where he filmed Blue Velvet.
- 31:56Speaker 15: What was on the plane was copious amounts of drugs
- 31:58Speaker 15: coming in from South America. Supposedly Pablo Escobar went looking
- 32:02Speaker 15: for other spots, quiet, out of the way places to
- 32:05Speaker 15: bring in his cocaine.
- 32:09Speaker 16: My name is Joshua Davis, and I'm an investigative reporter.
- 32:13Speaker 16: Kyle and I talk all the time about the strange
- 32:15Speaker 16: things we come across, but nothing was quite as strange
- 32:18Speaker 16: as what we found in Varnumtown, North Carolina.
- 32:21Speaker 15: There's crooked cops, brother against brother. Everyone's got a story
- 32:25Speaker 15: to tell, but does the truth even exist? Welcome to Varnumtown.
- 32:31Speaker 16: Varnumtown is available wherever you listen to podcasts.
- 32:38Speaker 17: Gather round, friend and join me by the fire. I
- 32:42Speaker 17: have a secret to share. When I was a child,
- 32:45Speaker 17: I lived with my grandma. She allowed me to watch
- 32:48Speaker 17: unsolved mysteries. Fast forward to two thousand and eight, my
- 32:52Speaker 17: freshman year of college, A series of armed robberies on
- 32:56Speaker 17: campus escalated into a serial rapist's reign of terror. That's
- 33:01Speaker 17: when I created my first crime podcast. In January twenty fourteen,
- 33:07Speaker 17: I picked up the podcast again from my college roommate
- 33:11Speaker 17: who fell for an underage girl online, to the chilling
- 33:14Speaker 17: story of a murdered nun in nineteen sixty nine Baltimore.
- 33:18Speaker 17: And in the Throwaway series, I share my own journey
- 33:22Speaker 17: of overcoming homelessness and how that experience led me to
- 33:25Speaker 17: unmask a serial killer and identify three of his jing
- 33:29Speaker 17: Do victims. This is foul play crime series where the
- 33:33Speaker 17: stories are real and the truth is waiting to be discovered.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Lee Clark and Joey Walkins both have faced a lot
- 33:52Speaker 4: of struggles since they came home. It's not been easy,
- 33:55Speaker 4: but things have been even harder for Josh.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Story difference between what you expected life would be and
- 34:02Speaker 6: the reality of it. What's the biggest shock for you?
- 34:07Speaker 7: Yeah, it's been hard and it's been eye opening.
- 34:09Speaker 12: The way of the world nowadays is totally different than
- 34:12Speaker 12: what it was twenty five years ago.
- 34:15Speaker 7: But then I think it was gonna be as hard
- 34:17Speaker 7: as it has been held though I'm not. I'm gonna
- 34:22Speaker 7: be straight up, I did not.
- 34:24Speaker 12: One thing it's been hard is when I have that
- 34:27Speaker 12: little job I learned from doing some double double shifts
- 34:32Speaker 12: and some twelve hour shifts is that my back is
- 34:35Speaker 12: not nowhere near as strong as it used to be.
- 34:38Speaker 6: Well, you went in at eighteen locked out, you were.
- 34:41Speaker 7: Forty three, forty three and a half.
- 34:46Speaker 6: It's a big difference from being eighty old, especially when
- 34:50Speaker 6: you've been in there and.
- 34:52Speaker 18: You've been out for fifteen months, and you know, J
- 34:55Speaker 18: Justin and I have spent some time with you and
- 34:57Speaker 18: we talk all the time. And I think it's been
- 35:00Speaker 18: hard to sort of hold the job and stuff because one,
- 35:04Speaker 18: you don't have any job experience, So you're starting off
- 35:07Speaker 18: in your mid forties, Yeah, without anything in your resume.
- 35:11Speaker 18: Talk about that.
- 35:12Speaker 12: Uh, that's that's been hard because even up here where
- 35:15Speaker 12: I'm at now in Atlanta, which is my new home,
- 35:18Speaker 12: it's still the same. You still have the same you know,
- 35:20Speaker 12: obstacles in your way, the same nor get in your face.
- 35:23Speaker 7: You don't have no experience.
- 35:25Speaker 18: Yeah, and so you guys are wrongfully convicted, wrongfully imprisoned,
- 35:29Speaker 18: and you get.
- 35:30Speaker 7: Out and there's no help at all, none, none, none,
- 35:34Speaker 7: whats so ever.
- 35:35Speaker 18: And I mean I remember being shocked by that when
- 35:38Speaker 18: it all happened.
- 35:39Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, I was too.
- 35:41Speaker 6: Really, one of the things that was eye opening for
- 35:44Speaker 6: me is that when you got out, it was hard
- 35:48Speaker 6: just to do basic things. It was hard to get
- 35:51Speaker 6: you an ID because I have an ID. You need
- 35:55Speaker 6: an address, but you didn't have an address. And then
- 35:58Speaker 6: you need a utility bill. But how can you have
- 36:00Speaker 6: a utility bill if you don't have an address? And
- 36:02Speaker 6: it just felt like this endless loop, and it took
- 36:04Speaker 6: so much effort and time just to get simple things
- 36:08Speaker 6: like an ID, like a copy of your birth certificate.
- 36:11Speaker 12: Like yeah, I was talking to my cousin Steve when
- 36:13Speaker 12: was riding around Rome. He was telling me a story
- 36:16Speaker 12: by somebody he knows that just got out and parole
- 36:18Speaker 12: went to a TC. He said, playing simply, this guy's
- 36:21Speaker 12: gangtually got more support, more services and getting more from
- 36:25Speaker 12: the state than we got and he's on parole.
- 36:28Speaker 18: It's it's really hard, right, And on some of your
- 36:31Speaker 18: most difficult days, you told me and just Senda that
- 36:34Speaker 18: in some ways, life on the outside has been harder
- 36:38Speaker 18: than being in prison.
- 36:39Speaker 7: At least I had a roof on my down head
- 36:41Speaker 7: and I knew my next meal was coming from.
- 36:44Speaker 12: But I got to thinking because regardless of whether I
- 36:48Speaker 12: don't have a roofo in my head or the next
- 36:52Speaker 12: mil come from I have the opportunity to better myself,
- 36:57Speaker 12: or in there you don't have that opportunity.
- 37:00Speaker 18: But they also don't have frozen margaritas in prison margaritas.
- 37:04Speaker 7: They don't have beautiful liver run around here.
- 37:06Speaker 4: But freedom has meant everything to Josh. But it has
- 37:12Speaker 4: been a hard road. At first, things were going pretty good.
- 37:16Speaker 4: He got a job, got a routine, Things were okay.
- 37:20Speaker 4: But without any kind of safety net or support structure
- 37:22Speaker 4: behind him, it didn't take much to have that all
- 37:24Speaker 4: fall apart.
- 37:26Speaker 18: I want to take you back for a second, back
- 37:28Speaker 18: to January of twenty three. Okay, okay, and Jasina and
- 37:34Speaker 18: I had helped you move into your new apartment, and
- 37:39Speaker 18: the three of us sat there and went over a budget, yes,
- 37:44Speaker 18: for how we were going to make this work. And
- 37:47Speaker 18: what I remember is this look in your face, like,
- 37:51Speaker 18: what's a budget?
- 37:52Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 37:53Speaker 18: Because you had never done that, You'd never been you'd
- 37:56Speaker 18: never been an adult on the outside. You lived at home.
- 37:59Speaker 18: And I think I knew at that moment, and I
- 38:01Speaker 18: think you knew it too, this is going to be
- 38:04Speaker 18: really hard.
- 38:06Speaker 8: Yah.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I remember it will.
- 38:07Speaker 12: We was sitting down on the police paper and I
- 38:09Speaker 12: was like, man, i't think I said, how am I
- 38:11Speaker 12: going to do this?
- 38:13Speaker 7: I just didn't really know what to do. And he
- 38:17Speaker 7: just gotten a poor I couldn't sustain it.
- 38:19Speaker 6: So you got out in January, like Kevin said, you know,
- 38:22Speaker 6: we helped you move into an apartment. You had a
- 38:25Speaker 6: job for a couple of months, things were going good.
- 38:28Speaker 6: You lost transportation, so you lost the job and it's
- 38:33Speaker 6: been hard since then. From my perspective, it's been hard
- 38:36Speaker 6: for you to get back on your feet. Like it's
- 38:39Speaker 6: really hard to get to a job when you don't
- 38:40Speaker 6: have transportation.
- 38:43Speaker 4: So it's been a hard fifteen months. Recently, with Jasinda's help,
- 38:48Speaker 4: Josh found a place of a shelter down in Atlanta,
- 38:50Speaker 4: where he's now hoping to rebuild his life from scratch.
- 38:54Speaker 6: The point is though, that like you're willing to work,
- 38:57Speaker 6: like you, oh yeah, you want a job I wanted
- 39:01Speaker 6: Johnson band.
- 39:01Speaker 12: I can't stand it because like how are you doing? No,
- 39:09Speaker 12: I'm rote man, I'm homeless, I'm homelesss. I'm homelesss.
- 39:13Speaker 7: So thank you.
- 39:16Speaker 6: And right now, like part of you trying to get
- 39:19Speaker 6: back on your feet and trying to become you know, independent.
- 39:22Speaker 6: You're in this new program, you're in the shelter in Atlanta,
- 39:25Speaker 6: you're going through some classes. You're headed towards getting a
- 39:29Speaker 6: voucher for your own apartment, hopefully a job.
- 39:32Speaker 7: No, I do.
- 39:32Speaker 12: I feel very hopeful in that because the program that
- 39:35Speaker 12: I mean actually helps people that actually get vouchers and
- 39:37Speaker 12: get get in that situation.
- 39:39Speaker 9: You know.
- 39:39Speaker 18: Let me ask you something. When you got out of prison,
- 39:43Speaker 18: where did you think you would be right now?
- 39:46Speaker 12: It's like I said, ern I thought i'd have a job.
- 39:49Speaker 12: I thought I had some money in my pocket. I
- 39:51Speaker 12: thought I had a home of a bilding. I thought
- 39:53Speaker 12: I have, you know, working on my future wife.
- 39:56Speaker 18: How really did and what do you want people to
- 39:59Speaker 18: know abou about how hard it is to have those
- 40:03Speaker 18: basic things in your life when your life has been
- 40:06Speaker 18: taken for two and a half decades.
- 40:10Speaker 7: It's very hard. I mean it's it's it's mind blowing
- 40:15Speaker 7: sometimes how hard it is. And I did not think
- 40:18Speaker 7: it be this hard.
- 40:19Speaker 12: Lee feels the same way as I that he didn't
- 40:21Speaker 12: think it'd be as hard as it was for him.
- 40:24Speaker 12: Jo always even mentioned that for me a couple of
- 40:26Speaker 12: times too. He didn't think it would be that hard.
- 40:28Speaker 12: Neither I really assured he didn't think it would be
- 40:30Speaker 12: as hard.
- 40:32Speaker 18: I think everyone walking around that doesn't lose time like
- 40:36Speaker 18: this in prison takes a lot of these things for granted, right.
- 40:40Speaker 18: You take relationships for granted, you take work history for granted.
- 40:45Speaker 18: And I feel like you've become this example that when
- 40:49Speaker 18: you're locked away for this long, it becomes that much
- 40:53Speaker 18: harder to get the basic things everybody dreams of in
- 40:56Speaker 18: their life.
- 40:57Speaker 12: It's almost like you've been born again and you're learning
- 41:00Speaker 12: how to live again, especially when you're in and never
- 41:03Speaker 12: done it begin with.
- 41:04Speaker 7: Because I mean I literally went from the high school
- 41:06Speaker 7: halls and the Shang gang malls.
- 41:08Speaker 12: My whole experience was that of a teenager, you know,
- 41:11Speaker 12: living at home and Mama Nette, and then I get
- 41:14Speaker 12: sent off into the concrete jungle.
- 41:16Speaker 18: You got thrown back out with nothing, and you weren't
- 41:20Speaker 18: prepared to go into this world.
- 41:22Speaker 7: No, I wasn't at all.
- 41:24Speaker 18: What I know because Jasinda and I spend time talking
- 41:28Speaker 18: to you, and we've seen you a bunch in the
- 41:30Speaker 18: last fifteen months, what I know is how scary this
- 41:35Speaker 18: is for you, and I know how mad it makes
- 41:37Speaker 18: you sometimes.
- 41:39Speaker 12: Well, it gets very frightening because all right, yeah, I'm
- 41:44Speaker 12: forty four going on forty five. That may not be old,
- 41:48Speaker 12: but when you haven't lived, it's very old. And I
- 41:52Speaker 12: don't know how much life I got left. They took
- 41:55Speaker 12: a lot of it already. Let's say, you know, down
- 41:57Speaker 12: the way, sometime we do get compensated to whatever, how
- 42:01Speaker 12: much time I got to enjoy it, you know, That's
- 42:03Speaker 12: what I'm looking at.
- 42:05Speaker 7: That's what's scary to me.
- 42:08Speaker 6: I was going to say, you know, it's been really
- 42:10Speaker 6: hard for you, but there have been some good times too.
- 42:14Speaker 7: Oh yeah, especially with y'all guys. It was awesome.
- 42:18Speaker 6: You had your first trip to New York City.
- 42:21Speaker 7: Yes, and I don't want to go back. Somebody, I
- 42:23Speaker 7: can't stand it.
- 42:25Speaker 6: I was on the plane with you when we flew
- 42:27Speaker 6: into New York.
- 42:28Speaker 12: Oh that was awesome. God, that was awesome. I'm like, hey,
- 42:31Speaker 12: look at this, we're sideways going over to Manhattan. I'm like, oh, man,
- 42:36Speaker 12: that's so great.
- 42:38Speaker 6: Another thing you did this year was we were able
- 42:42Speaker 6: to go to Nashville with you to record a song
- 42:46Speaker 6: in a studio.
- 42:48Speaker 4: While in Nashville, Josh got to professionally record a song
- 42:52Speaker 4: It's available on our YouTube page if you want to listen,
- 42:54Speaker 4: and you should. It's really good.
- 43:05Speaker 7: Brothers You.
- 43:08Speaker 17: Sister, way.
- 43:12Speaker 7: A Mother, Freedom Father.
- 43:18Speaker 6: What was the song you recorded?
- 43:20Speaker 12: It was Brother Juboss was written by Keith Whitley, performed
- 43:23Speaker 12: and made famous by Mark Champson up Back in the Night.
- 43:26Speaker 12: It's one of my favorite country songs of all the time.
- 43:29Speaker 12: The whole setup, you know, singing and recording and having
- 43:32Speaker 12: a guy from a well known country band playing the
- 43:34Speaker 12: drums bus that was never so cool, so neat, and
- 43:39Speaker 12: actually hear it playing, you know, I actually recording the studio,
- 43:43Speaker 12: I was like, whoa okay, And then when I heard
- 43:45Speaker 12: saw the.
- 43:46Speaker 7: Video itself, I was like, I'm good, very madly.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Georgia is one of only twelve states which there is
- 43:52Speaker 4: no guaranteed compensation for the wrongfully convicted. But there is
- 43:56Speaker 4: a way to obtain compensation. All you have to do
- 43:59Speaker 4: is I'm a member of the Georgia legislature that is
- 44:01Speaker 4: willing to sponsor resolution for compensation in your name, and
- 44:04Speaker 4: then had that bill passed about the House and the Senate.
- 44:07Speaker 18: So we're hoping that at some point you will get
- 44:11Speaker 18: compensated for the years that you spent in prison wrong.
- 44:16Speaker 18: Do you think about that?
- 44:18Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm hoping to you know, like I say, is
- 44:21Speaker 7: correcting or wrong?
- 44:23Speaker 12: Yeah, I won't feel fully that the wrong is being
- 44:26Speaker 12: corrected until that happens.
- 44:30Speaker 18: So the Jeff Titus case that just send us Susan
- 44:34Speaker 18: and I worked on. In the state of Michigan, the
- 44:38Speaker 18: state provides for compensation for someone that's been wrongfully convicted,
- 44:43Speaker 18: and Jeff has already received a payment from the state
- 44:46Speaker 18: of Michigan. The state of Georgia doesn't guarantee compensation for
- 44:50Speaker 18: someone who's spent time in prison wrongly, and so you
- 44:54Speaker 18: have to petition the state for that, and you know
- 44:57Speaker 18: that's a difficult circumstance. Lee has found a sponsor for
- 45:02Speaker 18: bill in the state House, and you're still looking for
- 45:06Speaker 18: a sponsor for bill in the state House. But talk
- 45:09Speaker 18: about how how it feels to know that you now
- 45:13Speaker 18: have to win compensation. It's not something that's simply provided
- 45:17Speaker 18: to you.
- 45:17Speaker 12: I don't think it's fair because especially if you know
- 45:22Speaker 12: and you even met that Okay, we screwed up and
- 45:25Speaker 12: you know where you well, we just took all these
- 45:27Speaker 12: years with these guys. Don't you owe us something? Because
- 45:31Speaker 12: I mean the situation. On the other foot, they feel
- 45:33Speaker 12: that way. So that's how I feel about it. I mean,
- 45:36Speaker 12: I don't think it's fair. I really don't. I mean,
- 45:40Speaker 12: like I said, I know where I would have been
- 45:42Speaker 12: at now that if not for the past courts centric
- 45:44Speaker 12: I know this, I would not be in some program
- 45:49Speaker 12: trying to survive and trying to get a roof over
- 45:51Speaker 12: my head. I had, like I said, either least them
- 45:54Speaker 12: out and if not college or maybe the music scene.
- 45:57Speaker 7: I'd have had a job working like my daddy, whether.
- 45:59Speaker 12: It's rush union, and I'd have been, if not, just
- 46:02Speaker 12: a regular worker a form by now making about forty
- 46:06Speaker 12: dollars an hour.
- 46:07Speaker 7: I know this, and I know now in my mind
- 46:09Speaker 7: about this and that opportunity was taken from.
- 46:13Speaker 18: Me, And how much of a difference would that money
- 46:19Speaker 18: make in your life?
- 46:21Speaker 12: I wouldn't be homeless, I'll be right now. If I
- 46:23Speaker 12: had that, I'll be on my way to follow having
- 46:26Speaker 12: a great life.
- 46:28Speaker 18: What do you think is going to happen in the
- 46:29Speaker 18: next year for you?
- 46:31Speaker 7: And I hope it gets better and I can.
- 46:33Speaker 12: I just starting to feel like a man, a man
- 46:38Speaker 12: instead of a teenage boy, which is what I feel
- 46:40Speaker 12: right now, and I set my path forward to, you know,
- 46:45Speaker 12: having a good life and everything else.
- 46:48Speaker 7: That's what I'm hoping.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Lee, Josh, and Joey are all home now. They're all free.
- 47:00Speaker 4: So eight years and four wrongful convictions later, I'm finally
- 47:03Speaker 4: done with Floyd County for now anyway. But it's good
- 47:07Speaker 4: to be able to go there and visit just for fun.
- 47:11Speaker 4: The night that we were lost down there in Rome
- 47:13Speaker 4: and we went to Gigoties and it was Mitcham and
- 47:18Speaker 4: you and Joey and Josh, and it was nice to
- 47:20Speaker 4: know that all y'a are friendly home.
- 47:22Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a good night. It was a good
- 47:24Speaker 8: night there.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Side note, that's also the night that after we were
- 47:29Speaker 4: the only ones left in the bar, Ethan Hawk Radley
- 47:31Speaker 4: walked in. I think he'd been hoping to get a
- 47:34Speaker 4: quiet drink by himself, but instead ended up drinking with
- 47:37Speaker 4: a bunch of recent xaneries. Anyways, it was good to
- 47:42Speaker 4: catch up with Lee and Josh again, and later on
- 47:44Speaker 4: the season we'll do an update with Joey Watkins too,
- 47:47Speaker 4: so you can hear how things have been for him.
- 47:50Speaker 4: But for now, Lee, Josh, and Joey are all continuing
- 47:53Speaker 4: the process of rebuilding their lives and doing their best
- 47:55Speaker 4: to make up for the years that were taken from them.
- 47:58Speaker 4: Oh and if there's any want in Atlanta who might
- 48:01Speaker 4: have a lead on need jobs that Josh could try
- 48:03Speaker 4: applying to, let us know. We'll pass them on to him. Well,
- 48:07Speaker 4: I'll be seeing you in a couple of weeks. And
- 48:09Speaker 4: New Orleans for the instance comments.
- 48:12Speaker 8: Definitely liking forward yet. Yeah, we will be there.
- 48:18Speaker 9: I'm glad you're home.
- 48:20Speaker 8: I'll feel appreciate it.

- 48:53Speaker 4: murder of an Ae Ramis, and we'll hear from Lewis's
- 48:56Speaker 4: mother about why she believes Jake and Tyre innocent, and
- 49:00Speaker 4: we'll also hear from a witness whose testimony was critical
