- 0:02Speaker 1: Cal Poly is in session. Students swarm through campus and
- 0:05Speaker 1: file in and out of classes. They're thinking about the
- 0:07Speaker 1: next chapter reading they have tonight, their next class, their
- 0:10Speaker 1: new dorm, their senior project, how to get to the gym,
- 0:12Speaker 1: what's for dinner tonight? Where's the nearest bathroom? Kate and
- 0:17Speaker 1: I know things can get a bit chaotic as a
- 0:19Speaker 1: student navigating the ins and outs of college life.
- 0:23Speaker 2: At cal Poly.

- 0:50Speaker 1: to write this down.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Welcome back to another episode of CP one and one.
- 1:03Speaker 3: And I'm so excited about this one because I feel
- 1:06Speaker 3: like it's going to be our most useful episode to date.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Totally Today, we'll be talking about how to find a
- 1:11Speaker 1: job on campus, in slow and anywhere else you may
- 1:14Speaker 1: be interested in working. The job hunt can be an
- 1:16Speaker 1: intimidating process, but with our expertise on finding a job
- 1:20Speaker 1: and with the help and advice of a career services
- 1:23Speaker 1: will help walk you through this daunting task.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Today, we're going to talk about how we got our jobs,
- 1:28Speaker 3: different types of jobs that you can get, interview tips,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and how to stand out while you're applying. We also
- 1:33Speaker 3: have a special guest, a career counselor, who will offer
- 1:35Speaker 3: some professional insight on finding a job.
- 1:38Speaker 1: As two girlies who love to shop and spend, we
- 1:41Speaker 1: understand the desire for money to fuel our consumerist addictions.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So bad, so bad, but also you know, to be
- 1:48Speaker 1: able to eat and live or have like an apartment
- 1:51Speaker 1: to live in and not to mention just this need
- 1:55Speaker 1: to build our resumes.
- 1:57Speaker 3: So that's why we want to share our insight on
- 1:59Speaker 3: how to find the right job for you to put
- 2:00Speaker 3: a little extra money in the bank or get some
- 2:02Speaker 3: valuable work experience.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So, Emma, what do you do for work? What I do?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Let's see, I mean I'm currently working three jobs, but
- 2:15Speaker 1: they're all actually through cal Poly. So I am teaching
- 2:20Speaker 1: a class here in the English one thirty four class professor. Yes,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and I do want to be a teacher. So it's
- 2:26Speaker 1: like perfect right up my alley, giving me that work
- 2:30Speaker 1: experience that I want building my resume, but also getting
- 2:35Speaker 1: money in the bank, like you said, So I'm doing that.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I'm also a TA for one of my professors, so grading,
- 2:43Speaker 1: lots and lots of grading. But that is also good
- 2:47Speaker 1: because I get a nice little paycheck. And then I
- 2:50Speaker 1: work at the children's center on campus, so I'm doing
- 2:54Speaker 1: those three little things right now.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I admire you so much for working at the children's
- 2:58Speaker 3: center because it seems like like it seems like a job.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I have stuck with these kiddo's for over a year now,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and we're in the throes of potty training, which is
- 3:09Speaker 1: its own you know, source of challenges. But no more
- 3:13Speaker 1: diapers for me. But Kate, I'm curious to hear about
- 3:16Speaker 1: what you do for work.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I work low key, like five jobs,
- 3:20Speaker 3: but I wanted to focus more so on the one
- 3:23Speaker 3: that's really paying me right now because a lot of
- 3:26Speaker 3: my jobs are actually more so for resume building and
- 3:28Speaker 3: work experience a lot of my ed M work and
- 3:32Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It's not paid, oh yeah, but but we let's do it.
- 3:37Speaker 3: We're working on love Yeah, I get free and mission
- 3:39Speaker 3: to events and everything like that.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So I'm not complaining. But right now I work at
- 3:44Speaker 2: Sunday car Wash.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Lovely go get.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah. No, literally everyone sings that to my face every
- 3:51Speaker 3: single time I tell them that I work at the
- 3:52Speaker 3: car wash. I want to talk a little bit about how,
- 3:54Speaker 3: like how I got the job, because I feel like
- 3:57Speaker 3: this is something that a lot of students are interested in,
- 4:00Speaker 3: just like this kind of like.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Retail esque work.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 3: So I saw on LinkedIn that they were hiring for
- 4:07Speaker 3: a position that it was higher up. It wasn't like
- 4:10Speaker 3: a member of like the hospitality team, which is what
- 4:12Speaker 3: I wanted to do, just like customer service and like
- 4:14Speaker 3: greeting customers and all that stuff. But I saw that
- 4:18Speaker 3: they were looking so I just sent an email to
- 4:21Speaker 3: the address on their website and immediately they got back
- 4:24Speaker 3: to me and we set up an interview time and
- 4:26Speaker 3: I was hired on the spot, which was so clutch. Sure,
- 4:29Speaker 3: and I've now been working there for a year, which
- 4:31Speaker 3: is really fun. I just celebrated my one year universary
- 4:34Speaker 3: with my one and only Sunday car Wash.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I love that, so I encourage you.
- 4:39Speaker 3: To just send the email if you find the address,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and just go for it, because I might as.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Well try totally. I mean, the way that I was
- 4:49Speaker 1: able to find, like my job was through since they
- 4:53Speaker 1: were through cal Poly. I mean some of them are different,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but more specifically the Children's Center. It was like I
- 4:59Speaker 1: went on the cow Poly website and looked up what
- 5:02Speaker 1: jobs they had, and I saw the Children's Center and
- 5:06Speaker 1: I was like, that is right up my alley. I
- 5:08Speaker 1: am definitely going to apply. I think it was also
- 5:11Speaker 1: listed on indeed dot com, and indeed was just so
- 5:16Speaker 1: easy to scroll through to like find jobs, like any
- 5:20Speaker 1: job was listed on their cow Poly jobs, jobs for
- 5:24Speaker 1: the businesses downtown, things like that, and I was just
- 5:27Speaker 1: able to like scroll through and be like, Okay, what
- 5:29Speaker 1: am I interested in working in? So that was helpful
- 5:32Speaker 1: for me to just like narrow down my like search
- 5:36Speaker 1: and find what I would actually be interested in, because
- 5:38Speaker 1: I think Indeed dot Com also has search categories that
- 5:41Speaker 1: you can then be like, oh, I'm interested in healthcare
- 5:44Speaker 1: or something like that.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I mean, gotta love job recruitment websites, right, so I.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Love also for like being a TA. That was something
- 5:52Speaker 1: like my professor just specifically like asked me. Yeah, so
- 5:55Speaker 1: it would also recommend to like our faithful listeners out
- 6:00Speaker 1: there just working on those relationships with like the people
- 6:04Speaker 1: in your life, because my professor specifically asked me to
- 6:08Speaker 1: work with them and be their TA. And that was
- 6:11Speaker 1: something like I wasn't in the market for a job.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I wasn't looking, but it was an opportunity that was
- 6:17Speaker 1: given to me through those working relationships.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Absolutely, and we're going to circle back to how to
- 6:24Speaker 3: actually find jobs later on, but right now, let's get
- 6:27Speaker 3: into what kind of jobs you can get more specifically
- 6:30Speaker 3: in Slow but also you know, outside of Slow because
- 6:33Speaker 3: we're both kind of on that post grad job right
- 6:37Speaker 3: now and it's really really scary. But yeah, first off,
- 6:43Speaker 3: let's just talk about on campus jobs. This is what
- 6:45Speaker 3: you're doing, yes, yeah, so you found that through cal Poly,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and like there's so many different places you can work
- 6:50Speaker 3: on campus. You got aside jobs which is like the
- 6:54Speaker 3: rec center, children's center as well, correct, yes, all that
- 6:57Speaker 3: fun stuff, campus dining, and then you also put here
- 7:00Speaker 3: like research projects.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so I did a research project over the summer.
- 7:05Speaker 1: So it's like that was another opportunity to just work
- 7:07Speaker 1: with a professor. But there's so many of those that
- 7:10Speaker 1: are available for all majors in all colleges, and you
- 7:13Speaker 1: just get a nice little stipend and it just goes
- 7:15Speaker 1: directly towards your tuition, or you can choose to just
- 7:20Speaker 1: get a check and then you're like you use it
- 7:22Speaker 1: for tuition.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Talk about productivity, I mean like if you're doing something
- 7:26Speaker 3: for your major while also making it Yeah, yeah, not
- 7:29Speaker 3: bank for seve, just making stipend, yes.
- 7:33Speaker 1: No, but it's nice because you get it in like
- 7:35Speaker 1: a lump sum. It's just I love seeing it. I'm like,
- 7:39Speaker 1: that was like gorgeous.
- 7:40Speaker 3: I'm just laughing that you use the term lump sum
- 7:42Speaker 3: lumps Okay. And then also we have freelance work as well.
- 7:46Speaker 3: This is kind of what I do. So one of
- 7:50Speaker 3: the jobs that I have right now is through this
- 7:52Speaker 3: travel company called smart Trip. I'm trying to get a
- 7:54Speaker 3: full time job with them after I graduate.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Okay, So sending thoughts in prayers for Kay please.
- 8:00Speaker 3: And pretty much what I'm doing is I'm trying to
- 8:02Speaker 3: get people who are studying abroad to use my promo
- 8:05Speaker 3: code whenever they purchase a trip through Smart Trips and
- 8:08Speaker 3: then I get commissioned off of that.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And also just creating your own business. Yeah, like I
- 8:13Speaker 1: know it seems really scary, but there's so many like
- 8:15Speaker 1: cow poly students who have like a side hustle business.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Like I know someone who makes cookies and cupcakes and
- 8:24Speaker 1: just sells them. I know people who like do haircuts,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and it's like something as simple as just having like
- 8:30Speaker 1: an Instagram account to be like contact me for this
- 8:33Speaker 1: and I'll I'll give you like goods.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Like absolutely.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I feel like the best example is probably Thrifty Beaches
- 8:39Speaker 3: because that was started by a student just selling like
- 8:42Speaker 3: thrifted clothes on Dexter Lawn and now they have headquarters
- 8:46Speaker 3: in downtown Slow right.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Well that's another thing, just Dexter Lawn in general, like
- 8:50Speaker 1: if you just go, I mean, I don't know the
- 8:52Speaker 1: logistics of how you can get a booth set up there,
- 8:54Speaker 1: but people be booth and all the time and selling things.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So it's today yeah, oh gorgeous.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So for up and up stuff, I mean yeah, So
- 9:03Speaker 3: there's lots of different things you can do.
- 9:05Speaker 1: There's also just off campus jobs like food service, retail
- 9:10Speaker 1: and just like paid internships. So there's definitely like so
- 9:15Speaker 1: many opportunities and different avenues you can go when looking
- 9:19Speaker 1: for a job.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, so now let's get into how to actually
- 9:23Speaker 3: find these jobs, because honestly, that's the most difficult part
- 9:27Speaker 3: totally just like you don't even.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Know where to start.
- 9:29Speaker 3: So I mean, for Sunday, like I said, I saw
- 9:32Speaker 3: it on LinkedIn and then I just like found the
- 9:33Speaker 3: email address and just went for that. And then I
- 9:37Speaker 3: actually had an internship I think two summers ago that
- 9:40Speaker 3: I got through my through the Journalism Department's Career Fair.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Oh so those yes, these employers like eat up cal Poly.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Students, so they do they're doing you guys are.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Just yeah, you really be out here doing the work
- 9:56Speaker 1: you are doing it become prepared.
- 9:59Speaker 3: So yeah, I got an internship at a PR firm
- 10:02Speaker 3: and that totally helped my career growth and I actually
- 10:05Speaker 3: got like some tangible work experience to put on my resume.
- 10:09Speaker 2: So that was great for summer jobs and stuff like that.
- 10:12Speaker 2: When I've worked.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Retail, like they'll just be stores that I really like
- 10:14Speaker 3: and I'll just walk in and be like, hey, are
- 10:16Speaker 3: you guys hiring?
- 10:17Speaker 1: Right?
- 10:17Speaker 3: Like I know it can be like a little scary,
- 10:19Speaker 3: but I mean it's worth it.
- 10:20Speaker 2: We'll just ask.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Yeah. The worst they can say is no, and it's
- 10:24Speaker 1: not you, it's them. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I've been rejected so many times that sounds so sad.
- 10:31Speaker 1: No, Yeah, I mean I totally agree with that. Just
- 10:33Speaker 1: like asking around and seeing, you know, if people need
- 10:36Speaker 1: help or like any services that you can offer them,
- 10:39Speaker 1: like I touched on earlier, Like I just looked at Indeed,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I looked at the cow Poly jobs. I know there's
- 10:45Speaker 1: Handshake out there that you can like go to, and
- 10:49Speaker 1: there's I even think there's like something called cow Poly Connect,
- 10:52Speaker 1: which I've recently been exploring. Even if you don't have
- 10:55Speaker 1: a specific job in mind, talking to friends and family
- 10:58Speaker 1: or just like fact good team members on campus, like
- 11:01Speaker 1: there's always someone out there who's looking for a little
- 11:04Speaker 1: extra help and you might be the perfect fit.
- 11:07Speaker 2: For that, exactly.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Like literally just send your resume out to a bunch
- 11:11Speaker 3: of places that excite you. You can DM people on
- 11:14Speaker 3: social media, like Ema said, there's different websites like LinkedIn, indeed, Handshake,
- 11:19Speaker 3: et cetera. And then just it's all about who you know.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, Networking definitely is a big My major.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah, my major also sends out like a weekly newsletter
- 11:29Speaker 3: with job opportunities, and I know that a lot of
- 11:32Speaker 3: other majors also do that, so yeah, I like scroll.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Every week I get a different email about a different
- 11:39Speaker 1: job opportunity. So yeah, Also just check your emails.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So which I know can be really hard, but I.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Know I don't even want to get into my email like.
- 11:49Speaker 2: List, guess how many I have in my box right now?
- 11:52Speaker 1: How many?
- 11:53Speaker 2: Seven?
- 11:54Speaker 1: What I'm a really diligent like email shop, I have
- 11:57Speaker 1: seven thousand.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Different ties of people in this world. Like, yeah, I
- 12:03Speaker 2: like when you said seven. I was like, oh my god,
- 12:05Speaker 2: me too, because.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I thought you've meant seven thousand. We maybe I'll pay
- 12:09Speaker 1: you to go through my email.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Okay, so let's go into interview tips because we've both
- 12:16Speaker 3: successfully secured jobs.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I don't know how, but we did it.
- 12:21Speaker 1: You listen to this podcast, you're like, they have jobs
- 12:24Speaker 1: or no, I feel that. I feel that, But surprisingly
- 12:28Speaker 1: we do.
- 12:29Speaker 3: What has worked for you in the past, what what
- 12:31Speaker 3: has made you feel confident? Like, have you gotten any
- 12:34Speaker 3: feedback from past employers?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Being human honestly works in your favor When you're like interviewing,
- 12:42Speaker 1: like being confident in who you are and then being
- 12:45Speaker 1: able to, you know, sound natural when speaking. And I
- 12:49Speaker 1: know it's so hard because for the most part you're nervous,
- 12:53Speaker 1: like when you're the people who are interviewing you, like
- 12:56Speaker 1: if you can relate to them, like find something that
- 12:58Speaker 1: you both like you share a belief or value system
- 13:01Speaker 1: or anything like that, and you somehow work that into
- 13:04Speaker 1: the conversation. That is what I find is like the
- 13:07Speaker 1: most successful for me in an interview, things like that,
- 13:11Speaker 1: Just being relatable going in, being confident in your skills
- 13:14Speaker 1: and abilities like that is what's gonna make you stand
- 13:18Speaker 1: out the most.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I mean I feel like being vulnerable has also worked
- 13:22Speaker 3: for me in the past because I feel like a
- 13:23Speaker 3: very common question that's asked is like think of a
- 13:26Speaker 3: time where you faced adversity or like a tough time
- 13:29Speaker 3: in your life, and how did you overcome it. Yeah, so,
- 13:32Speaker 3: like I haven't been afraid to like dig deep with
- 13:35Speaker 3: my possible future employer.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And then there's also some more like surface.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Level things that you wouldn't necessarily think about but are
- 13:41Speaker 3: actually very important on the day of the interview, Like,
- 13:44Speaker 3: for example, I cannot wear clothes that I know I'm gonna.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Be fidgeting with.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah, like I need to be wearing something super comfortable
- 13:51Speaker 3: that's like both professional looking and also like I know
- 13:54Speaker 3: I'm not gonna have to like pick at it right, Yeah, because.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I completely agree, And especially if I'm wearing a dress
- 14:01Speaker 1: or a skirt, just like even how I'm gonna be
- 14:04Speaker 1: sitting in the chair like legs crossed, but not over
- 14:08Speaker 1: the knee because you don't want to accidentally flash anyone.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Things like that.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Also, like the one thing that my dad told me
- 14:15Speaker 3: is like when an employer asks do you have any
- 14:18Speaker 3: other questions for me? Or is there anything else you'd
- 14:20Speaker 3: like to know, you need to have an answer.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't agree.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'm good I don't.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Given those questions, it shows you're interested in the job,
- 14:29Speaker 1: Like it's showing that you value the time. Also, like, yeah,
- 14:33Speaker 1: even though the interview is more to see if you're
- 14:36Speaker 1: qualified for the job, it's also an opportunity for you
- 14:39Speaker 1: to see if this company or this organization fits in
- 14:43Speaker 1: with your own personal like values, morals things like that,
- 14:48Speaker 1: like are you gonna fit in there? This is your
- 14:50Speaker 1: chance to ask Yeah totally. And part of that too,
- 14:54Speaker 1: I think is doing research on what the company or
- 14:57Speaker 1: the organization is. Again going back to the children's center,
- 15:01Speaker 1: they have a very unique teaching philosophy. So like, I
- 15:04Speaker 1: did research on how to like incorporate that in my
- 15:06Speaker 1: interview and be like this, like I know you guys
- 15:09Speaker 1: value x Y and Z. I too value X Y
- 15:13Speaker 1: and Z, and like, I've practiced this through this job
- 15:16Speaker 1: experience and this work experience and things like that. So
- 15:19Speaker 1: being able to like again just show your investment and
- 15:22Speaker 1: commitment to this job in this organization will go a
- 15:25Speaker 1: long way.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, but let's now get into how we've stood
- 15:30Speaker 3: out in pools of other competition, et cetera. We'll get
- 15:35Speaker 3: more professional details about this from the career counselor, but
- 15:38Speaker 3: like I'm curious to know, like, how do you think
- 15:40Speaker 3: you've been able to make yourself stand out against other applicants?
- 15:43Speaker 1: I think having work experience that is reflective of what
- 15:47Speaker 1: I want to do long term. That way, every job
- 15:50Speaker 1: I'm going into, I have proof of why I am
- 15:53Speaker 1: qualified to do this job because I have done similar
- 15:57Speaker 1: work in the past. Having intention with the jobs that
- 16:00Speaker 1: you are choosing to work really can go a long way,
- 16:03Speaker 1: and really matters to your employer.
- 16:06Speaker 2: That's a great tip.
- 16:07Speaker 3: I feel like I'm personally more so all over the
- 16:09Speaker 3: place when it comes to my jobs, but I know
- 16:13Speaker 3: that I like my thing that I try to do
- 16:15Speaker 3: is just always bring passion to the table. I convey
- 16:19Speaker 3: like a genuine care for the purpose of the job,
- 16:21Speaker 3: and that just immediately attracts employers. I always try to
- 16:25Speaker 3: bring like unique ideas to the table, and like it.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I always brainstorm before my interviews with like my friends
- 16:32Speaker 3: or my parents or whatever and just be like, let's
- 16:35Speaker 3: try to come up with something that this company hasn't
- 16:37Speaker 3: maybe thought of yet, right, I could introduce. Yeah, and
- 16:40Speaker 3: that goes a long way sometimes.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and no matter what job you get or
- 16:44Speaker 1: work experience you're like having, it's going to transfer to
- 16:48Speaker 1: your next job in some capacity. No matter what work
- 16:52Speaker 1: you're actually doing, there's a skill there, there's a lesson
- 16:56Speaker 1: there to be learned. So it's all it's all transferable.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Now we have Jade Moreno from cal Poly Career Services
- 17:04Speaker 3: to just give us a little bit more of a
- 17:06Speaker 3: sophisticated and educated kind of information about how to find
- 17:11Speaker 3: a job and just some good career tips overall, Hi,
- 17:17Speaker 3: what is your name and what is your position within
- 17:19Speaker 3: Career Services?
- 17:20Speaker 4: Hi, my name is Jade Moreno. I'm a career counselor
- 17:23Speaker 4: at Career Services. I serve as a lead career counselor
- 17:26Speaker 4: for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design And I'm
- 17:28Speaker 4: also a generalist.
- 17:29Speaker 1: What kinds of services does the cow poly Career Center
- 17:33Speaker 1: or the cow Poly Career Services provide?
- 17:36Speaker 4: Think of us as basically anything career related. So resumes,
- 17:40Speaker 4: mock interviews, you help with applying for CRAD school cover letters,
- 17:45Speaker 4: maybe you've never written one before, finding an on campus job, internship,
- 17:49Speaker 4: full time job search. Maybe you just want a network
- 17:52Speaker 4: and talk to people who are doing work that you're
- 17:54Speaker 4: interested in. So anything career related is what I would
- 17:57Speaker 4: describe is what our center does to support students.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Whenever I hear the word resume, immediately my heart's like
- 18:02Speaker 3: poo bom, boom boom, because I'm like, is mine right?
- 18:04Speaker 3: I don't know if like what this should look like?
- 18:06Speaker 3: So just real quick, like how long should a resume be?
- 18:09Speaker 3: And like what font size like should you be using
- 18:11Speaker 3: when you're creating a resume?
- 18:13Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:13Speaker 4: Really good questions I first want to start with. Resumes
- 18:16Speaker 4: are very subjective, but a general rule I would say
- 18:19Speaker 4: is take as an undergrad to keep it one page.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Definitely print it out to see if you can read it,
- 18:23Speaker 4: Like have different people look at it, because I've looked
- 18:25Speaker 4: at some and I'm like, WHOA, that's tiny font I
- 18:27Speaker 4: can't really readin. Yeah, as you're progressing here at cal Poly,
- 18:31Speaker 4: start taking off the high school. They really want to
- 18:33Speaker 4: know what you're doing at cal Poly outside of your classes.
- 18:36Speaker 4: So it's like be club involvement, maybe you're volunteering in
- 18:39Speaker 4: the community. Maybe you also can put class projects too.
- 18:42Speaker 4: A lot of students don't know that, like, oh, I've
- 18:44Speaker 4: actually done something a really cool project that's related to
- 18:46Speaker 4: that internship I'm applying for.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Kind of side question to that, what's the difference between
- 18:52Speaker 1: a resume and a CV, and like when and where
- 18:55Speaker 1: should you be using resume versus CV? Yeah, good question.
- 19:00Speaker 4: So resumes, as I mentioned, undergrad typically one page, but
- 19:03Speaker 4: a CV there's no length. You can have a couple
- 19:07Speaker 4: pages and you can put everything. It's usually to more
- 19:10Speaker 4: for like academic positions, research positions. So you'll see that
- 19:15Speaker 4: on grad school applications we'll say resume or CV, so
- 19:17Speaker 4: it's more academic related, but people use those words interchangeably,
- 19:22Speaker 4: but resumes think of it as one page. Cvs are
- 19:25Speaker 4: usually more extensive and there's no page length, and usually
- 19:28Speaker 4: for more academic positions.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Okay, so I mean you're already diving into some really
- 19:33Speaker 3: good topics that I feel like a student would really
- 19:36Speaker 3: want to know more about. So where can students find you?
- 19:39Speaker 3: And like, how do they make an appointment with career services?
- 19:41Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a couple different ways, so it depends on
- 19:44Speaker 4: the student's preference. Maybe you're I don't know a PCV
- 19:47Speaker 4: and you don't want to walk that far, so you
- 19:49Speaker 4: can schedule a virtual far Well, we're located by the
- 19:53Speaker 4: football stadium, so okay, it's a little far a walk,
- 19:56Speaker 4: so if you don't want to walk, you can schedule
- 19:58Speaker 4: a virtual appointment, or you can in person. And then
- 20:01Speaker 4: another thing, you can just hop into our virtual drop
- 20:03Speaker 4: in hours Monday through Friday. So the zoom link is
- 20:06Speaker 4: on our website. If you have an urgent question, drop
- 20:08Speaker 4: in would be perfect even for a quick resume review
- 20:11Speaker 4: and you're like, I don't have time to schedule, Just
- 20:13Speaker 4: talk to someone real quick and we'll get you connected
- 20:15Speaker 4: to resources.
- 20:16Speaker 1: It sounds like you offer one on one meetings, but
- 20:18Speaker 1: I know you guys do workshops as well, don't you.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Can you just kind of explain the different spaces where
- 20:25Speaker 1: you can access these resources.
- 20:27Speaker 4: I think going to our workshops is a great way
- 20:29Speaker 4: to learn a new skill. I recommend that students take
- 20:32Speaker 4: advantage of these workshops sooner than later, like don't wait
- 20:35Speaker 4: till your senior year, because you can learn new skills
- 20:37Speaker 4: related to your resume, learn all about the grad school process,
- 20:41Speaker 4: maybe salary negotiation. So you can come to these workshops.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Basically you'll come in in person. A lot of them
- 20:47Speaker 4: are in person, some of them are over zoom, so
- 20:49Speaker 4: if you can always listen in and we definitely get
- 20:52Speaker 4: some good attendance virtual as well. We also have info
- 20:56Speaker 4: sessions at career services, so you can come in again
- 20:59Speaker 4: virtual or person. I've been seeing quite a few that
- 21:02Speaker 4: are in person, and it's been pretty packed in our
- 21:04Speaker 4: conference room. But employers will come in and give a
- 21:07Speaker 4: presentation and you can ask and just learn about what
- 21:10Speaker 4: they do, so it's not necessarily they're there to Like
- 21:13Speaker 4: a career fair is an info session, so that's a
- 21:15Speaker 4: great way as well to learn about careers and to
- 21:17Speaker 4: connect with employers. I think a big thing that we're
- 21:19Speaker 4: known for in addition to career counseling. So when you
- 21:22Speaker 4: think of services, I think the first thing is like
- 21:24Speaker 4: career counselors. Yes, we have an awesome team eight counselors.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Another great resource that Career Services offers is our career fairs.
- 21:31Speaker 4: We host about ten a year. We just hosted our
- 21:35Speaker 4: all Career Fair and our Competing Career Fair a couple
- 21:37Speaker 4: of weeks ago. What I'd recommend for students who want
- 21:40Speaker 4: to go to our career fair is actually take a
- 21:42Speaker 4: look at the employer list. We have it available online
- 21:45Speaker 4: through Mustang Jobs. Take a look to see if it's
- 21:47Speaker 4: a good fit for you.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yeah. I remember I went to a career fair for
- 21:51Speaker 1: my first time ever last year as a third year,
- 21:54Speaker 1: and it was actually really fun and like productive. What
- 21:59Speaker 1: about on the interview side of that, if you have
- 22:01Speaker 1: any suggestions, I know Kate and I talked about it.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Yeah, knowing the job description really well because you want
- 22:07Speaker 4: to tailor your responses to that position. Sometimes students are like,
- 22:10Speaker 4: well I want to learn, I want to grow. Yes,
- 22:12Speaker 4: that'll happen, but focus on their needs how you can
- 22:15Speaker 4: help them. You know, ask intentional questions. So do you
- 22:17Speaker 4: prepare a couple questions that you do want to ask.
- 22:19Speaker 4: It's better to have questions rather than saying no, I don't.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Asking questions is going to demonstrate that you're really interested
- 22:25Speaker 4: in the candidate, and it'll.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Be it'll come off as a red flag.
- 22:28Speaker 4: If you're like, no, don't have any questions, They'll be like, what,
- 22:30Speaker 4: they're not interested in us, So you want to demonstrate
- 22:33Speaker 4: some interest. Another tip that I'd recommend is learning how
- 22:36Speaker 4: to use the car technique or the star technique.
- 22:40Speaker 1: You guys heard of that, No I have not that, Like,
- 22:43Speaker 1: tell me more, Yeah, I've been doing something in all
- 22:46Speaker 1: my interviews that I don't know about.
- 22:47Speaker 4: It's a great way to frame your responses. So we
- 22:50Speaker 4: have an awesome interviewing guidebook on our website. You can
- 22:53Speaker 4: google and find it there. But it's a way to
- 22:56Speaker 4: frame your responses when I when I coach students with
- 22:58Speaker 4: interviews that really helps them, they're like, Okay, I can
- 23:01Speaker 4: give my answers in this kind of formula. So CAR
- 23:04Speaker 4: stands for challenge, A stands for action, and are as
- 23:08Speaker 4: a result. So whenever possible, try to frame your answers
- 23:12Speaker 4: in that way, because you're going to give a concrete example.
- 23:15Speaker 4: So car technique is definitely helpful for behavioral questions. Behavioral
- 23:19Speaker 4: questions are sometimes like tell me about a time you
- 23:22Speaker 4: encountered conflict with a team member and how did you
- 23:24Speaker 4: resolve it. That's a behavioral question to assess your potential
- 23:27Speaker 4: with working with others. So that's a great way to
- 23:30Speaker 4: frame your responses when you're interviewing. They want to hear
- 23:33Speaker 4: concrete examples. So that's a great tip I'd love to
- 23:36Speaker 4: pass on. We have that in our interviewing guidebook. We
- 23:39Speaker 4: can also practice with you doing walk interviews. But if
- 23:41Speaker 4: you can practice that car technique, challenge, action, result, and
- 23:45Speaker 4: whenever possible, try to frame your answers that way. Interviewers
- 23:48Speaker 4: are going to love that because you're framing it in
- 23:50Speaker 4: a concrete way and you're walking them through it rather
- 23:53Speaker 4: than being really vague.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I'm so yeah, that's such a good tip. I hate
- 23:59Speaker 2: that up.
- 24:00Speaker 3: We've talked about like LinkedIn, indeed, all those online platforms
- 24:04Speaker 3: we talked about, career affairs, We've talked about just like Google, searching,
- 24:08Speaker 3: word of mouth, all of that. But do you have
- 24:10Speaker 3: any other tips of like how to just get that
- 24:13Speaker 3: process starting, because it can be really scary sometimes.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Absolutely. I remember feeling that when I was a senior,
- 24:18Speaker 4: like Meek, I'm graduating soon. It's coming up, like I'm
- 24:21Speaker 4: going to be in the real world, and like I
- 24:22Speaker 4: need a job.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Student loans are on my mind, terrifying.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Generally, what I'd recommend is have multiple approaches when you're
- 24:30Speaker 4: searching for a job, not just one job board, like
- 24:33Speaker 4: talk to your peers, talk to your faculty too. If
- 24:35Speaker 4: there's other job boards you can use. Definitely how Poly's
- 24:38Speaker 4: job board musting jobs, It's on your portal. There's filters
- 24:41Speaker 4: you can filter by location. It's helpful to know your
- 24:44Speaker 4: target location. And then a big part what I'd recommend
- 24:48Speaker 4: as seniors who are graduating a couple quarters from now
- 24:52Speaker 4: or maybe even next quarter, is start thinking about how
- 24:54Speaker 4: can you incorporate networking a bit more.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Okay, so we've kind of flown through all of these,
- 24:58Speaker 3: So before we wrap up, are there any other things
- 25:01Speaker 3: that you'd like to add?
- 25:02Speaker 4: I really want students to know that we're a welcoming place,
- 25:05Speaker 4: even if you're not even entirely sure what question to ask,
- 25:08Speaker 4: and you put in your appointment note, like just want
- 25:10Speaker 4: to connect and say hi. That's a great way to
- 25:13Speaker 4: start it. We're really good at asking questions making you
- 25:16Speaker 4: feel welcome. You don't have to have a perfect question
- 25:19Speaker 4: to meet with us to just get connected, and like,
- 25:22Speaker 4: I just want to learn more and talk about my interests.
- 25:25Speaker 4: And again, if you're feeling really lost or uncertain, please
- 25:27Speaker 4: come get some support.
- 25:28Speaker 2: You don't have to do that alone.
- 25:30Speaker 4: To connect with us. To make an appointment, you're essentially
- 25:32Speaker 4: going to log into Mustang Jobs, click on the career
- 25:34Speaker 4: counseling tab and you can schedule there, and you also
- 25:38Speaker 4: can find our virtual drop in zoom link and our hours.
- 25:41Speaker 4: All that information is on our homepage. It'll say meet
- 25:44Speaker 4: with a career counselor on the bottom right.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Yeah, well that was great, Thank you. I didn't realize,
- 25:50Speaker 1: like even just the word career what that all could encompass. Yeah, same,
- 25:54Speaker 1: and like you should, like even just talking about major,
- 25:57Speaker 1: like I guess major and career kind of becomes anonymous
- 26:00Speaker 1: when you're here. So it was really cool and very
- 26:03Speaker 1: very informative. So thank you so much for meeting with
- 26:06Speaker 1: us today and sharing all your lovely advice and expertise.
- 26:10Speaker 4: You're very welcome.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Thank you, Jade, Thank you.
