- 0:14going to delve into a monumental development.
- 0:17NASA and Axiom Space and SpaceX have signed an agreement for the
- 0:204th private Astronaut mission to the International Space Station,
- 0:24scheduled to launch no earlier than August of 2024 from the
- 0:27Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This represents a significant
- 0:31stride in making space more accessible, transforming low
- 0:34Earth orbit into a domain that transcends government led
- 0:37expeditions. Now this mission, called AX 4,
- 0:40is a part of an increasingly concerted effort to make space A
- 0:43more commercial domain, with NASA becoming one among many
- 0:47customers in the market. Axiom Space, SpaceX and other
- 0:50private entities are now boldly venturing where only governments
- 0:54have gone before, heralding a new era of space exploration.
- 0:58And this ambitious mission brings us one step closer to
- 1:02normalizing life in microgravity and making the final frontier
- 1:05place not just for exploration, but also for the business
- 1:09minded. But before we dive into all the
- 1:12intriguing details about this upcoming mission, we need to

- 1:33making the cosmos more accessible to the masses.
- 1:35It was set a new milestone. The two entities have recently
- 1:38signed an order to the 4th private astronaut mission to the
- 1:41International Space Station. Now this expedition, referred to
- 1:44as Axiom Mission 4 or AX4, is provisionally scheduled to lift
- 1:48off no earlier than August of 2024 from NASA's Kennedy Space
- 1:52Center located in Florida. Now, the anticipated milestone
- 1:56encapsulates the latest of NASA's endeavors to broaden low
- 1:59Earth orbit utilization beyond government backed missions.
- 2:02Phil McAllister, the Director of Commercial Space at NASA
- 2:04Headquarters in Washington, hailed the development.
- 2:07He highlighted that these orders mark critical stepping stones to
- 2:10creating a commercial space marketplace.
- 2:13With NASA as one of the many customers in axioms, Mission
- 2:17Four will aim to stay attached to the space station for up to
- 2:20two weeks. This specific launch date will
- 2:22be contingent upon the overall spacecraft traffic to the
- 2:25orbital outpost and other planning constraints.
- 2:28Now, to ensure a seamless operation, though, NASA and
- 2:30Axiom Space mission planners will synchronize inorbit
- 2:33activities for the private astronauts.
- 2:35This coordination will facilitate the team's
- 2:38interaction with station crew members and flight controllers
- 2:41on the ground. Michael Safradini, CEO and
- 2:43President of Axiom Space, expressed his company's
- 2:45enthusiasm for the mission. He stated each mission allows us
- 2:49to build on the foundation we were set for the world's first
- 2:52commercial space station, Axiom Station.
- 2:54Now, he affirmed that these ventures will play an
- 2:56instrumental role in the normalization of living and
- 2:59working in microgravity, and they would also promote
- 3:02commercial space activities, expand space access, and foster
- 3:06knowledge and experience related to working and living in space.
- 3:10To prepare for the AX4 mission, Axiom Space will propose 4 crew
- 3:14members to NASA and its international partners to
- 3:16review, and once approved, these individuals will become the
- 3:19prime crew members for the mission.
- 3:21These astronauts will undergo training with NASA international
- 3:24partners in SpaceX, and the training will familiarize them
- 3:27with the spacecraft systems, protocols and emergency
- 3:30readiness for the Dragon spacecraft.
- 3:32Now, Axiom Spaces partnership with SpaceX extends beyond
- 3:35training. The private aerospace
- 3:37manufacturer has been contracted to provide transportation to and
- 3:40from the International Space Station.
- 3:42This collaboration facilitates the integration of private and
- 3:45commercial stakeholders and space exploration advancing
- 3:48towards a more accessible space economy.
- 3:50This landmark partnership between Axiom Space and NASA
- 3:53consists of two main agreements, a mission specific Order in a
- 3:57reimbursable Space Act Agreement.
- 3:59The former encompasses crew supplies, cargo delivery,
- 4:02storage and inorbit resources for daily use.
- 4:05It also includes provisions for seven contingency days aboard
- 4:09the Space Station. Now, as part of the order, Axiom
- 4:12Space may offer NASA specific capabilities.
- 4:15These could range from a return of scientific samples requiring
- 4:19cold storage, to leveraging the mission commander's time for
- 4:21completing NASA science and performing tasks for the agency.
- 4:25The Reimbursable Space Act Agreement, on the other hand,
- 4:28outlines the services that Axiom Space will pay NASA to enable
- 4:31the mission. These services include crew
- 4:34training and use of facilities at NASA's Johnson Space Center
- 4:37in Houston and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
- 4:40Furthermore, SpaceX has similar reimbursable agreements with
- 4:43NASA Kennedy for launch services.
- 4:45Now, NASA's private astronaut missions are not new endeavors,
- 4:48though. Ex IM Space was chosen for the
- 4:50third private astronaut mission back in March, and the proposed
- 4:53crew members for this expedition are currently under review by
- 4:56NASA and its international partners, with a formal
- 4:59announcements expected later this year.
- 5:01Now this mission is set to launch no earlier than January
- 5:03of 2024. The selection of these private
- 5:06astronaut missions was made following proposals received in
- 5:09response to NASA's September 2022 research announcement.
- 5:12The missions were evaluated based on the providers ability
- 5:15to successfully execute a mission, NASA's capacity to
- 5:18support the proposed mission, and the missions contribution to
- 5:21NASA's goal of commercialization of low Earth Orbit.
- 5:25For over 22 years, NASA has facilitated a constant US human
- 5:29presence in low Earth orbit. The ultimate goal is to foster a
- 5:32marketplace in low Earth orbit, where NASA is among many
- 5:35customers in the private sector leads the charge forward.
- 5:39Now the strategy not only reduces the cost for government
- 5:42back space activities, but also allows NASA to concentrate on
- 5:45bigger things such as the Artemis missions, which is aimed
- 5:49at the Moon and eventually the Red Planet of Mars now.
- 5:52Meanwhile, Low Earth Orbit continues to be an essential
- 5:54training and proving ground for these deep space missions,
- 5:58contributing to the broader vision of space exploration.
