- 2:37Speaker 6: Hi you Russell Clark.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right Friday, Ramero personnel are end of Drummond.
- 2:43Speaker 6: Over b I'd like to talk to you, all right?
- 2:45Speaker 6: When'd you want to see me? Right now? Okay? All right?
- 2:47Speaker 6: Were looking at the captain. Okay, let's go where they
- 2:57Speaker 6: want to see anybody you know, Drummond will tell you. Okay,
- 3:05Speaker 6: how long you been on the job, bluh, about two
- 3:07Speaker 6: and a half months. How do you like it? Oh?
- 3:09Speaker 6: I like it fine?
- 3:10Speaker 7: Wife doesn't mean much of it. She wanted me to
- 3:12Speaker 7: stay at my own job. What was that selling insurance?
- 3:16Speaker 7: I likes to be home nice, doesn't like to be alone,
- 3:19Speaker 7: especially now. Yeah, she's expecting a couple of months, you
- 3:22Speaker 7: know how yet? Yeah that's cross you. Hey, I uh
- 3:27Speaker 7: put in a request for day work. Do you think
- 3:28Speaker 7: that's why personnel wants to see me?
- 3:30Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't think so why I should
- 3:32Speaker 6: like to get that day watch? Yeah? Not the way
- 3:36Speaker 6: you full of started? I did? Yeah he started and trapping,
- 3:39Speaker 6: didn't you bet?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 3:40Speaker 6: Huh I have nine months go ahead? Uh no, thanks,
- 3:47Speaker 6: I have to be on the job at six. Think
- 3:49Speaker 6: just gonna take right long. I don't know. Hi Friday,
- 3:52Speaker 6: Hi Friday, and let's situ waiting.
- 3:57Speaker 8: Listen to al Coleman, Lieutenant, Yeah, commit, This is offic
- 4:03Speaker 8: to Clark, Lieutenant drummon.
- 4:05Speaker 6: How did you say? Oh a Clark? Sit down? Thanks?
- 4:10Speaker 8: A couple of questions for you, Yes, sir, you were
- 4:12Speaker 8: on special duty at the Olympic Auditorium last night there, right, yes, sir,
- 4:16Speaker 8: for the fights.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Anything unusual happened out there last night? I wasn't very important, Lieutenant.
- 4:22Speaker 7: After the fight's drunk fell down the stairs, on my
- 4:25Speaker 7: way out of the outitorium, broke his arm. I took
- 4:27Speaker 7: him to Georgia Street and he took care of the arm,
- 4:29Speaker 7: and I drove him home, and he's pretty drunk.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Why didn't you book the man? I didn't think it
- 4:35Speaker 6: was necessary. How long you've been with the department, Clark,
- 4:38Speaker 6: two and a half months, sore?
- 4:39Speaker 8: Did you know he should have been booked for violation
- 4:41Speaker 8: of forty one to twenty seven a lamc oh man?
- 4:43Speaker 7: It was in pretty bad shape, Lieutenant broke an arm.
- 4:46Speaker 7: I guess I didn't think the law was that straight law.
- 4:49Speaker 8: I was there for a purpose. He decided to forget it.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Now you're in a mess right up to your neck.
- 4:54Speaker 6: I don't understand. You remember the name of that drunk
- 4:56Speaker 6: he took care of last night. Yes, her name of Stacey,
- 4:58Speaker 6: lives out in West LA.
- 5:00Speaker 8: What's the matter of time that drunk mister Stacey wants
- 5:02Speaker 8: to finally complain against you?
- 5:04Speaker 9: What for?
- 5:05Speaker 8: He claims you took him back to the auditorium, beat
- 5:07Speaker 8: him up, broke his arm, and robbed him of one
- 5:09Speaker 8: hundred and twenty eight dollars.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Crazy, he's lying. I didn't do that. Got his word
- 5:12Speaker 6: against George Clark. The fact seemed to favor him, but.
- 5:15Speaker 7: I can prove it whether there was at least a
- 5:17Speaker 7: couple of dozen people around it, there was a doctor, he.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Continued, Maybe you better take it from the beginning, Clari,
- 5:23Speaker 5: Exactly how did it happen?
- 5:24Speaker 7: I was right after the fight, so I was on
- 5:26Speaker 7: duty in the lobby and I saw a bunch of
- 5:27Speaker 7: people crowing around the foot of the stairs.
- 5:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 7: I went over to see what the trouble was, and
- 5:31Speaker 7: they were looking at this man lying on the pavement, Stacy.
- 5:34Speaker 6: A doctor was examining his doctor. Did he identify him yet? Yeah?
- 5:37Speaker 6: I asked her.
- 5:38Speaker 7: Was that identification? He showed it to me, Dave McK carr.
- 5:42Speaker 7: He was doctor, All right, yeah, go ahead. Well he
- 5:44Speaker 7: told me that he had seen Stacy fall down the
- 5:46Speaker 7: stairs coming out of the auditorium, said that Stacy had
- 5:49Speaker 7: broken his left time.
- 5:50Speaker 6: What'd you do then?
- 5:51Speaker 7: Well, the docs said'd be okay to move him. So
- 5:53Speaker 7: I helped him into my car and take him down
- 5:55Speaker 7: to Georgia Street. So drunkyard to stand up the attendants.
- 6:00Speaker 6: He took care of his arm. Well, they can tell
- 6:01Speaker 6: you all.
- 6:01Speaker 8: About this maybe, but they can't help you on his witnesses.
- 6:05Speaker 8: You could have beaten up Stacy, robbed him, then take
- 6:07Speaker 8: him into Georgia Street.
- 6:08Speaker 7: But I didn't, Lieutenant, Lieutendant, is Stacy's lying? What'd you
- 6:10Speaker 7: do when you left Georgia Street? Well, I drove into
- 6:13Speaker 7: Central and told him what happened. I told the watch
- 6:15Speaker 7: commander I was going to drive this Stacy home, and
- 6:18Speaker 7: he warned me about it. I guess I should have
- 6:20Speaker 7: known him better. But well, I swear to you that
- 6:22Speaker 7: Stacy's lying.
- 6:23Speaker 6: You should have known him better. Where'd you go? Out
- 6:25Speaker 6: to your left? Central?
- 6:27Speaker 7: I drove him home. On the way, he said he
- 6:29Speaker 7: was hungry, so I stopped. I bought him a sandwich,
- 6:32Speaker 7: some black coffee. Kept telling me what a nag his
- 6:35Speaker 7: wife was, said he was afraid to go home.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Go on.
- 6:38Speaker 7: Well, when I got himTo his place, his wife started
- 6:39Speaker 7: chewing me out. I just said, good night. That's it,
- 6:42Speaker 7: that's it, so help me. That's exactly what happened.
- 6:44Speaker 8: How about the doctor at the auditorium, the one who
- 6:46Speaker 8: saw Stacy fall. Did you get his name in the dress?
- 6:50Speaker 6: Well, no, no, Lieutenant, I didn't. I think it was necessary.
- 6:54Speaker 6: How about the crowd that was standing around, just about
- 6:56Speaker 6: anybody you know, no, no, no, I didn't. Just a
- 7:00Speaker 6: bunch of people coming out of the fights. And you
- 7:02Speaker 6: haven't got anyone to corroborate your story. But all those
- 7:04Speaker 6: people saw it. There must have been a couple of
- 7:05Speaker 6: dozen of me. What are their names? I don't know.
- 7:10Speaker 6: All I know is I didn't beat him up and
- 7:11Speaker 6: I didn't take his money. I tell you that Stacy's lying.
- 7:13Speaker 6: You could be lying. We got no proof either way.
- 7:15Speaker 6: I'm not lying, Lieutenant, I didn't do it. We might
- 7:17Speaker 6: believe you, Clark. That doesn't make any difference. If this
- 7:19Speaker 6: man files at two eleven against he's got to be
- 7:20Speaker 6: settling the court. But I didn't do it. I tell you,
- 7:24Speaker 6: I swear I did it.
- 7:25Speaker 8: In just a minute, Mike said it, mister Stacy. You
- 7:32Speaker 8: can hear the story the way we get it from
- 7:33Speaker 8: Stacey and his wife.
- 7:34Speaker 6: I'd like to hear it. I don't know why he's
- 7:36Speaker 6: doing this. Tell me I helped him all I could.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Look Gary Barriers, that's the one. Yeah, wait a minute,
- 7:45Speaker 6: mister Stacy. What's this all about? Clark? Mister Stacey, would
- 7:48Speaker 6: you repeat the same story I told us this morning? Please?
- 7:51Speaker 6: You know what I told you. Chief, You had the stenographer.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Take it all down. It's the same thing. Like to
- 7:55Speaker 6: have you repeat it in front of officer Clark. Here
- 7:57Speaker 6: he's in title. I know what you're charging with? Man
- 7:59Speaker 6: like that entitled to nothing? You want to be a
- 8:02Speaker 6: shamed of yourself? Fuck lady, your husband's line. Don't call
- 8:04Speaker 6: my husband a liar. You're not a policeman. You're a
- 8:06Speaker 6: hold of them all right? Wait a minute, I don't
- 8:07Speaker 6: know what the city's coming to.
- 8:09Speaker 10: CoP's going around beating up private citizensh don't we trust
- 8:11Speaker 10: if we can't trust the policeman? Just a minute, please, No, captain,
- 8:14Speaker 10: you should have seen my husband when that officer brought
- 8:16Speaker 10: him home last night. I'm all banded, face, all cut up.
- 8:19Speaker 10: He was hurt so bad he could hardly stand up.
- 8:21Speaker 6: He was too drunk to stand up. Don't get fresh,
- 8:23Speaker 6: all right, that's enough.
- 8:25Speaker 11: This cop got hold of me as I was coming
- 8:27Speaker 11: out of the fights, took me in back of the auditorium,
- 8:30Speaker 11: told me if I didn't hand over my wallet, he'd
- 8:31Speaker 11: booked me on a drunk charge.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Were you drunk, Stacy? I was not. Had a couple
- 8:36Speaker 6: of beers, that's.
- 8:36Speaker 11: All, and I wouldn't give him my money and beat
- 8:39Speaker 11: me up, broke my arm and took my wallet.
- 8:41Speaker 9: Had a man like you ever get on the police force.
- 8:43Speaker 11: He figured he'd cover up, so he took me and
- 8:45Speaker 11: had my arm fixed at the emergency hospital, and he
- 8:47Speaker 11: drove me home, threatened me all away.
- 8:50Speaker 6: He said, you tell anybody about this and I'll get you.
- 8:52Speaker 6: That's just what he said. I don't get it, Stacy.
- 8:54Speaker 6: You know that story is a pack of lies. Why
- 8:56Speaker 6: are you doing this to me?
- 8:57Speaker 11: It's the truth and I'm gonna press charges and get
- 8:59Speaker 11: my money back.
- 9:00Speaker 6: One hundred and twenty eight dollars.
- 9:01Speaker 4: What have you done with it?
- 9:02Speaker 6: We can take care of the question, Missus Stacy, don't
- 9:04Speaker 6: see you're doing it. Make him tell what's o money?
- 9:06Speaker 6: I haven't got it.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Don't talk back to.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Me, mister Stacy. You and your wife want to find
- 9:11Speaker 6: a crime report at this time? You want to press charges?
- 9:14Speaker 8: Romero, Yeah, take mister missus Stacey's down. The record bureau
- 9:18Speaker 8: haven't make out a report for two eleven and it
- 9:19Speaker 8: so all right way.
- 9:21Speaker 10: Please now listen, we're going to get action. If we
- 9:24Speaker 10: have to take this to the district attorney. We're not
- 9:26Speaker 10: afraid of the publicity. We'll go to the newspaper if
- 9:28Speaker 10: we don't get action.
- 9:30Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am, what's it, Cark? They're lying. I can't I
- 9:39Speaker 6: can't prove it, but they're lying.
- 9:41Speaker 8: You can see the position that puts us in. If
- 9:43Speaker 8: you're innocent, will do all we can. If you're guilty,
- 9:45Speaker 8: we'll see you get everything that's coming to you.
- 9:46Speaker 6: But they're lying. You know that not up to us.
- 9:49Speaker 6: The court's going to have to decide. That's it. That's it. Well,
- 9:55Speaker 6: there's no other way. Clad. We got forty five hundred
- 9:58Speaker 6: men in the department. We don't claim they're all saints.
- 10:01Speaker 8: Once in a while the bad top comes along and
- 10:03Speaker 8: pulls the caper and all of us get a black eye.
- 10:05Speaker 8: This book of rules is the only protection we got
- 10:07Speaker 8: against that. By failing to enforce the law, you have
- 10:09Speaker 8: violated your duty as a police officer at yourself in
- 10:12Speaker 8: a real mess.
- 10:13Speaker 6: Clark, like anybody else, should get a fair trial. I mean,
- 10:17Speaker 6: I'm dropped from the force.
- 10:19Speaker 8: Those people have filed the crime report, draw suspension pending
- 10:22Speaker 8: the outcome in the case after that.
- 10:24Speaker 6: If you're cleared and be your hearing before the boarder arrives.
- 10:28Speaker 8: Right through right now, you'll be booked for robbery and
- 10:30Speaker 8: assault in Hilton County Jail.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Case will be presented the Districttorney tomorrow. What kind of
- 10:36Speaker 6: I'll have to have your badge on the desk. You're done,
- 10:49Speaker 6: ID card? Yeah on the desk. Yeah, all right, Joe,
- 10:56Speaker 6: that's it, Okay, take them. Six pm.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Ben returned to the office and together we took rookie
- 11:09Speaker 5: police officer Russell Clark across the street to the Hall
- 11:11Speaker 5: of Justice at the County Jail booking desk on the
- 11:14Speaker 5: twelfth floor. He was booked on suspicion of two eleven
- 11:16Speaker 5: PC and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Was lodged in the cell block.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Investigating charges against a police officer involves exactly the same
- 11:26Speaker 5: procedures cases where private citizens are concerned.
- 11:29Speaker 6: Proved the suspect innocent or guilty, that's the job.
- 11:32Speaker 5: If Clark was innocent, looked like there was only one
- 11:36Speaker 5: way of proving that was somehow to find the unnamed
- 11:38Speaker 5: doctor who was supposed to have seen Stacy fall down
- 11:40Speaker 5: the auditorium stairs and then examined him afterwards. If Clark
- 11:44Speaker 5: was guilty, we had to find proof that his story
- 11:46Speaker 5: about Stacy falling downstairs was a lie. Besides that, we
- 11:50Speaker 5: had to find evidence that he beat up Stacy at
- 11:52Speaker 5: the rear of the auditorium that night, and then he
- 11:54Speaker 5: robbed him of one hundred and twenty eight dollars. Thursday,
- 11:57Speaker 5: April tenth, Ben and I checked in for work seven
- 12:00Speaker 5: forty five am and found a message from the jailer
- 12:02Speaker 5: on the phone board. Tack wanted to see us right away.
- 12:05Speaker 5: We met with him in the county jail interview room.
- 12:11Speaker 6: How you doing, not too bad? Don't let it sour you.
- 12:15Speaker 7: Huh, sergeant, you really think I rolled that character? I
- 12:20Speaker 7: want too in the truth. We check you out, good family,
- 12:24Speaker 7: You got a fine army record. No, we don't think
- 12:28Speaker 7: you did it. I just can't understand why he picked me.
- 12:30Speaker 7: I tried to help him all I could. Then he
- 12:32Speaker 7: walks in the next day with a frame story like that.
- 12:34Speaker 7: You got any idea why Stacey would pull something like
- 12:36Speaker 7: this on you, I don't know. I'm worried, Sergeant, believe me.
- 12:40Speaker 7: I can't afford to sit here missing my pay. We
- 12:43Speaker 7: lived pretty close to the budget with a baby coming.
- 12:46Speaker 7: I'm worried about the wife. I just don't know what
- 12:48Speaker 7: to do.
- 12:49Speaker 6: And you sure you told us everything about this that
- 12:51Speaker 6: you remember.
- 12:52Speaker 7: Well, that's the one reason I wanted to see. I
- 12:53Speaker 7: didn't sleep much last night. I kept trying to remember
- 12:56Speaker 7: the name of that doctor.
- 12:57Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I.
- 12:58Speaker 7: Remember once he did mention his name, and then when
- 12:59Speaker 7: I had for his identification, he showed me one of
- 13:01Speaker 7: his cards.
- 13:02Speaker 6: Any idea what his name was? Well, I'm not sure
- 13:04Speaker 6: of it.
- 13:05Speaker 7: As I remembered, it was some kind of a Swedish
- 13:07Speaker 7: or Norwegian name, something like Johnson Tolson, you know, something
- 13:11Speaker 7: with a son on the end of it.
- 13:12Speaker 6: It's on that card, and that doesn't errate down too much.
- 13:15Speaker 6: What is it going?
- 13:16Speaker 7: Well, I think I put his card in one of
- 13:17Speaker 7: the pockets of my other uniform shirt. That's why I called.
- 13:20Speaker 7: I wonder if you could check that for me. It's
- 13:22Speaker 7: at home? Sure, Where do you live out on Norwich
- 13:24Speaker 7: Road four eleven. It's right near the coliseum or eleven. Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 7: all right, we'll check it out for just ask the wife.
- 13:32Speaker 7: Cards should be in one of the pockets, Yeah, if.
- 13:33Speaker 6: You put it there.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Ben and I left the interview room at the County
- 13:43Speaker 5: Jail and drove out to the home of Officer Clark
- 13:45Speaker 5: on Norwich Road. We introduced ourselves to his wife and
- 13:49Speaker 5: told her what we were after. Her eyes were red
- 13:51Speaker 5: and looked like she'd been crying. She asked about her husband.
- 13:53Speaker 5: We told her he was all right.
- 13:54Speaker 9: They're making a terrible mistake. Sergeant Rust never did anything
- 13:57Speaker 9: crooked in his life.
- 13:58Speaker 6: He didn't do it.
- 13:58Speaker 12: I know he didn't.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Everything began to spreading it out. Missus law court will
- 14:02Speaker 6: have the final say.
- 14:03Speaker 9: I knew Uss shouldn't have left his insurance job. I
- 14:05Speaker 9: just knew it all this trouble.
- 14:07Speaker 5: How about that shirt your husband told us about the
- 14:09Speaker 5: when he wore that night at the auditorium.
- 14:11Speaker 9: Oh, yes, it's had a uniform shirt.
- 14:13Speaker 6: Can we see it please?
- 14:14Speaker 9: Yes, certainly, it's right this way back in bed. What's
- 14:18Speaker 9: so important about the shirt? Sergeant?
- 14:20Speaker 6: Your husband told us that there might be a card
- 14:22Speaker 6: in one of the pockets. I helped clear up.
- 14:24Speaker 9: Things should be hanging up here in the closet. I
- 14:28Speaker 9: always like to keep Russ's shirts on hangers. She keeps
- 14:32Speaker 9: a much nicer looking.
- 14:38Speaker 6: What's my this morning?
- 14:40Speaker 9: I sent it to the cleaners.
- 14:47Speaker 6: Clark's wife, Ben and.
- 14:48Speaker 5: I drove down to a dry cleaning shop a few
- 14:50Speaker 5: blocks away, where Missus Clark had left the shirt the
- 14:52Speaker 5: counter girl there told us that the truck had already
- 14:54Speaker 5: been by that morning and picked up the day's cleaning.
- 14:56Speaker 6: It was a store rule to check all garments for contents. Nothing.
- 15:01Speaker 5: We got the address of the main plant, the Great
- 15:03Speaker 5: Northern Dry Cleaners, a place down on Factory Street. Ten
- 15:06Speaker 5: fifteen am. We checked in at the main plant and
- 15:09Speaker 5: explained to the manager what we were. After we gave
- 15:11Speaker 5: him the tag number of her cleaning, Missus Clark gave
- 15:14Speaker 5: him the description of the shirt. We waited in the
- 15:16Speaker 5: manager's office while he made a search for the dark
- 15:18Speaker 5: blue wool police shirt.
- 15:20Speaker 8: How about this one, lady, it's the only blue wool
- 15:22Speaker 8: shirt picked up at your cleaners this morning.
- 15:25Speaker 9: Yes, that's Russa's shirt. That pocket sat there and mended it.
- 15:28Speaker 8: I'll check the pockets for you. I had to pull
- 15:30Speaker 8: it out of the tank. So wait, any in this
- 15:35Speaker 8: pocket by the other one? Yeah, look for yourself.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Nothing.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You are listening to drag nets the case history of
- 15:57Speaker 1: a police investigation presented in public interest by Fatima Cigarettes.
- 16:03Speaker 3: If you smoke a long cigarette, it will be in
- 16:06Speaker 3: your interest to listen to a typical case history of
- 16:09Speaker 3: a Fatima smoker.
- 16:11Speaker 1: It's the case of Northwest Airline Stewardess Geene Medisine. This
- 16:15Speaker 1: is her actual sign statement.
- 16:18Speaker 12: There's one thing I really look forward to after a
- 16:20Speaker 12: long flight, A good mild smoke. That's why I prefer
- 16:26Speaker 12: the new King Size Fatima. It's milder than any other
- 16:29Speaker 12: long cigarette I've tried. Yes, I agree it's wise to
- 16:34Speaker 12: smoke extra mild Fatima.
- 16:36Speaker 3: And so do more and more smokers every day. Actual
- 16:40Speaker 3: figures show Extra Mild Fatima has more than doubled its
- 16:45Speaker 3: smokers coast to coast. So enjoy extra mild Fatima yourself.
- 16:51Speaker 3: The King size cigarette, which contains the finest Turkish and
- 16:55Speaker 3: domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to make it extra mile.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You will prefer Fatima's much different, much better flavor. You
- 17:05Speaker 1: will agree it's wise to smoke extra mile Fatima.
- 17:10Speaker 4: It's wise to smoke extra mild Fatima, the best of
- 17:15Speaker 4: all long cigarettes.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Thursday, April tenth, shortly after noon, the daily newspapers were
- 17:28Speaker 5: on the streets, and the head on one of the
- 17:29Speaker 5: top front page stories read Rookie cops slugs rob citizen.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Ben and I went back to the county jail and
- 17:36Speaker 5: told Clark that we'd failed to find the card. He
- 17:38Speaker 5: could give us no other lead that might help in
- 17:40Speaker 5: clearing the case. During the next two days that followed,
- 17:44Speaker 5: Ben and I ran down every possible lead, no.
- 17:45Speaker 6: Matter how remote it was.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I made a thorough check on mister and missus Stacey.
- 17:49Speaker 5: We double checked back on Clark's record. For one full day,
- 17:53Speaker 5: we did nothing but phone doctors in and around the
- 17:55Speaker 5: city of Los Angeles. From a list of hundreds, we
- 17:57Speaker 5: came across three doctors who had been president the Fights
- 18:00Speaker 5: and Olympic Auditorium on the knight Stacey claimed he was
- 18:02Speaker 5: beaten up and robbed by Officer Clark. None of the
- 18:05Speaker 5: three had seen a man tumble down the stairway leading
- 18:08Speaker 5: from the balcony to the lobby. None of them had
- 18:10Speaker 5: seen any accident or had been called on to help
- 18:12Speaker 5: anyone professionally. Monday, April fourteenth, we met with Lieutenant Ralph Drummond.
- 18:17Speaker 6: No go, thanks good us, Ralph. We can't figure it's
- 18:20Speaker 6: almost to fact Stacy's line. Clark, what about him.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Well, there's still nothing to show that he didn't do it.
- 18:26Speaker 5: He had the opportunity, maybe he had a motive. He
- 18:27Speaker 5: needs money, you know who didn't How much you get
- 18:30Speaker 5: on Stacy. He and his wife run a second hand
- 18:32Speaker 5: furniture store in South Flower. It's a small business. Stacy's
- 18:35Speaker 5: quite a gamber. He bets on the fights. Yeah, he
- 18:37Speaker 5: checked around with some of the gang down at the auditorium.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Stacey's well known down there. He laid some pretty heavy
- 18:42Speaker 5: bets the night he claims Clark rolled him. How much
- 18:44Speaker 5: you got the dope there, Ben? How's it figure out?
- 18:46Speaker 8: He lost over seventy five dollars in small amounts. Add
- 18:49Speaker 8: to that the fact that he was doing some partying
- 18:51Speaker 8: that might have cut for the one hundred and twenty
- 18:53Speaker 8: eighties message. Stacey blew the role, was afraid to tell
- 18:56Speaker 8: his wife, so he cooked up the story against Clark.
- 18:58Speaker 6: Yeah, sure, maybe that could have been the way it happened.
- 19:00Speaker 6: What do you got on the other side? Not much? Well,
- 19:03Speaker 6: couldn't dig up anything against Lark. I don't know. He
- 19:05Speaker 6: doesn't seem like the type to pull something like that.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Maybe not. You still can't prove he didn't do it.
- 19:11Speaker 6: How about the papers you've been plugging for witnesses. Yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 6: here's the ad. Had it running in personals for four
- 19:16Speaker 6: days now.
- 19:19Speaker 13: Well, there's man for a stairwayitorium. Please call Michigan five
- 19:24Speaker 13: two one seventy five. No his Also, you know all
- 19:28Speaker 13: the possible doctors in town have been checked out too.
- 19:30Speaker 13: How about the local medical magazines? Got an add in there, raff,
- 19:33Speaker 13: nothing's happened. Well, one thing is sure, something's gonna happen.
- 19:38Speaker 13: News papers are scorching the kid in the department along
- 19:40Speaker 13: with him. Victim without a trial makes good reading in
- 19:44Speaker 13: the tabloids. There's one thing I can't understand that Clark's leveling.
- 19:47Speaker 13: There was a doctor the fight that might have looked
- 19:48Speaker 13: at Stacy didn't. Where's the doctor? We've had this thing
- 19:51Speaker 13: noised all around down.
- 19:53Speaker 6: Uh, give it a little more time. He might turn up.
- 19:56Speaker 6: I kind of like the Stacy angle. What do you mean?
- 19:59Speaker 8: Well, suppose we get in here. I think we could
- 20:01Speaker 8: break him down into question. No, I doubt that we
- 20:03Speaker 8: can't even get close to him. That wife of his
- 20:05Speaker 8: and that lawyer there with him all the time. He's
- 20:06Speaker 8: afraid to talk to us. Maybe if we passed the
- 20:09Speaker 8: word to his wife had been gambling. How far can
- 20:11Speaker 8: we go on that, Well, she might believe us, she
- 20:13Speaker 8: might not. You've seen what she's like.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I got an idea.
- 20:17Speaker 8: He sold her on a story, and she's tagging along
- 20:18Speaker 8: to get the one hundred and twenty eight dollars back,
- 20:20Speaker 8: And it gives me an idea.
- 20:21Speaker 6: You know, one thing we might have missed.
- 20:23Speaker 8: Yeah, we found out that Stacy did a little partying
- 20:25Speaker 8: before he went to the fights at the auditorium at
- 20:27Speaker 8: and I didn't.
- 20:28Speaker 6: We Yeah, go ahead. We checked out a couple of
- 20:30Speaker 6: the bars he was drinking at.
- 20:31Speaker 8: But we figured he must have parted away at least
- 20:33Speaker 8: fifty out of one hundred and twenty eight dollars.
- 20:36Speaker 6: He didn't spend that much at the bar. Oh well, sure,
- 20:38Speaker 6: he probably hit a few other places too.
- 20:40Speaker 8: That's what I mean. That's still a lot of money
- 20:42Speaker 8: to drink up alone. You figure a woman, maybe you.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Got any reason to think stay? She plays around? Just one? Yeah,
- 20:49Speaker 6: his wife Monday one pm.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Been a nice at the canvas of bars and small
- 21:01Speaker 5: nightclubs in the general area around the Olympic Auditorium. We
- 21:04Speaker 5: started with those where Stacy was a regular customer. We
- 21:07Speaker 5: failed to turn up any leads. Either of the bartenders
- 21:10Speaker 5: refused to tell us that they had no knowledge of
- 21:12Speaker 5: Stacy's running around with other women. We kept at her
- 21:15Speaker 5: another day passed, two days, nothing one of the newspapers
- 21:20Speaker 5: started a campaign against the brutality of police officers.
- 21:24Speaker 6: On Thursday, we.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Got a tip from a bartender to place out on
- 21:26Speaker 5: Washington Street, the Brown Cow. He told us that he
- 21:29Speaker 5: thought he saw a man answering Stacy's description in his
- 21:32Speaker 5: bar a few nights before, with a flashy blonde in
- 21:34Speaker 5: the late twenties. He said he didn't know Stacy too well,
- 21:37Speaker 5: but he knew the girl, and he knew the hotel
- 21:39Speaker 5: where she stayed. Her name was Sandra Gay, an acrobatic
- 21:42Speaker 5: specialty dancer of the Cheap nightclub.
- 21:45Speaker 6: We checked out her hotel, but she wasn't in.
- 21:47Speaker 5: We f word for to get in touch with us,
- 21:49Speaker 5: and we picked up a hammerger and a potato salad
- 21:51Speaker 5: for lunch and checked back in at the office.
- 21:55Speaker 8: How you doing, cal Not as good as you two?
- 21:58Speaker 8: I mean, don't you smell a proof self of blonde
- 22:01Speaker 8: named Sandra Gate. She's waiting in the next room. Won't
- 22:04Speaker 8: talk to anybody but you.
- 22:05Speaker 6: Thanksmando. Didn't waste much time, did she very few? George Strong?
- 22:17Speaker 6: Your name Sandra Gay?
- 22:20Speaker 14: Yeah, you a fella's been looking for me.
- 22:23Speaker 6: Drop by your hotel. We'd like to ask you a
- 22:25Speaker 6: few questions.
- 22:26Speaker 14: Yes, sorry, this is.
- 22:27Speaker 6: My partner sides with Meryl. My name is Friday.
- 22:29Speaker 14: I am can you prick?
- 22:33Speaker 9: What can I help you with?
- 22:35Speaker 6: Do you know anybody but the name of Gerald Stacy?
- 22:37Speaker 9: Miss Gay Gerald?
- 22:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I hate that name. Do you know any man
- 22:40Speaker 6: who calls himself man?
- 22:41Speaker 9: No?
- 22:42Speaker 14: I think that's a terrible name for man.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Joe.
- 22:45Speaker 5: The man we have in mind is pretty short, stocky bill,
- 22:48Speaker 5: dark hair, and he wears steel rimmed glasses.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Where's your hang out place out in Washington? The Brown
- 22:52Speaker 6: Cow supposed to have been seen with you, Gerald Stacy?
- 22:56Speaker 14: Oh, yeah, I think I know you have mean furniture business.
- 22:59Speaker 14: And is a place near the Brown Cat?
- 23:01Speaker 6: That's right? You know him?
- 23:03Speaker 14: Oh?
- 23:03Speaker 9: Pop, Sure, I know him.
- 23:05Speaker 14: I got together once a while.
- 23:06Speaker 6: He's a kick, pretty big spender.
- 23:08Speaker 14: Oh he's got Yeah. Last time we went out, he
- 23:11Speaker 14: was flying. He can kick it around when he wants to.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Oh, Pops, when's the last time you were out with
- 23:16Speaker 6: a miss game?
- 23:18Speaker 14: Maybe a week two weeks ago? The Tuesday night, I think, yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 14: Tuesday the eighth.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Is that about right? That must have been it?

- 24:02Speaker 5: Five pm, mister and missus Stacy were called to Lieutenant
- 24:05Speaker 5: Drummond's office. Arrangements were made to have Officer Russell Clark
- 24:08Speaker 5: brought over from his cell.
- 24:09Speaker 6: In County Jail.
- 24:10Speaker 5: At five point fifteen, Ben and I checked into the
- 24:12Speaker 5: Lieutenant's office. Stacy and his wife were already there.

- 25:05Speaker 14: All right?
- 25:07Speaker 6: Mister Stacy, you're a liar. This officer didn't break your arm.
- 25:12Speaker 8: I saw you fall down a flight of stairs at
