- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: 5, 6, 7, 8, Daisy.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Hi y'all, welcome or welcome back to y'all to read.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm your host Haley and this is a rather floral week we are having here on Gilmore to say in the Gilmore to say universe florals for spring ground breaking as they say, which I still need to see that movie.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: I very much want to, but all of that aside, it was recently the 25th anniversary of Love Daisy Centributors and
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: iconic episode.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: So not only did yesterday on the podcast, Tara and I did a scene analysis of the proposal and the Daisy scene from that episode.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: We also released our There Should Be Daisy's Merch collection this week.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: There are a few pieces and designs to choose from.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: My personal fav is that there should be Daisy's bouquet with the pink ribbon tied around it.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like you were walking
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: post to and she has all of the daisies everywhere and she handed you that bouquet and now it's on your shirt.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: I just love it.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's so cute.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: Everything in that collection.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: We just love love love so much.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: And as Tara would say, since she's not here, I will say it, you can go to www.killmoretosayet.com.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: to check it out.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: So we had our Daisy's collection on Monday, we had our Daisy analysis episode yesterday, and so in keeping with the Daisy theme today, on the podcast, I have author Lori Gilmore to talk about her latest release and the newly minted New York Times bestseller, the Daisy Chain Flower Shop.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: It is about a woman named Daisy, of course, and she works at the Daisy Chain Flower Shop because she is one in a long line of Daisy's.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: Her mother was a Daisy, her grandmother was a Daisy,
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's a Daisy Jane, if you will, and the town has deemed her shop cursed when it comes to love, which is difficult for a florist.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Inter Elliot, the handsome, divorced architect, who helps her prove to the town she isn't cursed with a fake dating scheme.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is the six-book and Lori's small-town dream harbour series.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: A bit about Lori Gilmore, Lori Gilmore is a number one Sunday Times bestseller in the USA today bestseller, who writes steamy, small town romance.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: Her dream harbour series is filled with quirky townsfolk, cozy settings, and swoonworthy romance.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: The first book in the series, The Pumpkin Spice Cafe, was featured on Good Morning America and was named The TikTok Shop Book of the Year 2024.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: In this episode, Lori tells me a bit about why she chose the pen name Lori Gilmore.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: We talk a lot about what she was most excited for in this sixth installment of her series.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: As well as her thoughts on that lazy, hazy, crazy, daisy proposal from one Max Medina.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: I loved that she watched that episode the night before a conversation just to be refreshed.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: It was so fun to revisit it with someone who had fresh eyes on the scene as opposed to I who have seen it many, many times, but realize we had a lot of the same feelings about it.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: She has some interesting insights that I really enjoyed.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: But let's just get into the episode without further ado, here is Laurie Gilmore.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: So, Lori, I'm so excited that you made some time to chat with me because you have been rather busy.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: 20-23 is when you released your first book in the Dream Harbor series and just earlier this month, you released book six and barely three years, do you do anything but sit at your dusk and write?
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when you say it like that, six books and three years that does sound insane.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: But no, I managed to get out.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: I do really love the desk from time to time.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: There was a spreadsheet involved.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: I've got my workout that I hit, that I've hit every day.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: But it's not so bad.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's really not as crazy as it sounds.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it sounds crazy to me to just like the thought of like having that much to write.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess when you enter this town, it just kind of feels like a little escape for you.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: What is sitting down and writing look like for you?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like, take us to your desk with you if we could be a fly on the wall.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first, the children need to leave the house.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: So they get on the bus and they go off.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's pretty key.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: And then I actually have a new office at my house.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: So...
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: I used to be crammed in the corner of my bedroom, like, so that's why, like, the first, like, you know, four bucks in this series were in.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then we re-did our addict.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: So now I'm, like, up in the addict, I call it the tower.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I'm going up to the tower.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I'm going up to the tower to work, like, locked up in the tower, but it's nice up here.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so I have a real live desk now on a real office, which is fun.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, there's a spreadsheet.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I know, like, how many words after write predi to get to get the book done.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I do try to be pretty, I don't want to say like, regimented, but I try to be pretty like, strict with that of sticking to that word count.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: And it all, I mean, typically there's a lot of like wandering around and procrastinating in the middle.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: But if I were to actually just sit here and write, it's like a couple of hours to get those words out.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: but there is a lot of wandering around in between.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: So that stretches, this stretches like that.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: What's your favorite way to procrastinate?
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there's a lot of cups of tea involved.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I just have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen making tea.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: There's pets around, so they need to be paid attention to, of course.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's just like good pet mothering.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, I have to do that.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take the dog for a walk.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: But that just feels healthy.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: You should do that.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: That feels like helpful for writing.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's like the other part of writing.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's the thing in there.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: We have to get out in there.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's part of all part of the process.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Do you find it hard like on some days versus others like hitting that word count and feeling inspired?
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Does the change of space help out at all or has that hindered it?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, for sure.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: Some days it's just flowing and I'm like, I am a genius and this is like, I, this is so easy.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: What a great profession.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so fun.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then other days it's like,
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: Giving birth or pulling teeth or whatever physical metaphor you want is it's like painful You're like somehow.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'm having to make all this up, and it's the worst thing I've ever done Yes, like what are words?
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: What are sentences like none of the sounds right everything everything that's coming out just sounds stupid and wrong
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I try on the days where it is flowing.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I'll try to, you know, like, pad my work kind of those days.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll do extra.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: So then on the painful days, I can tap out early and be like, okay, good enough.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: Good try.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: I passed you.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: Make thank you, past Lori for really gotten in here because that's what I'm saying today.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: Cause today is an happening.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: We're, of course, talking about your New York Times by selling series Dream Harder, which is really marketed, or at least was pushed to me as like being for Gilmore Girls fans, because it's this beautiful small town with all these lovely little couples, all these cute, little establishments, small businesses, if you will.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: And here you have for our listeners to learn about or to love it more, because when I posted that I was going to be talking to you, I got so many responses in my story of like, I love her, I love these books, and so very beloved by our community.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: definitely hoping to introduce more of our listeners to your books.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: But speaking of Gilmour Girls, Gilmour Girls came out in October 2000, which we were talking about before, 25, almost 26 years ago.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: What were you writing in the year 2000?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, probably like an essay for 10th grade English.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think I was in 10th grade in 2000.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was saying I hate that at 25 years, like, I don't like, that's gross.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like that this.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know if we're trying my viewers that doesn't seem right to me, but yeah, I was in 10th grade So I was probably writing an essay about a book that I hated because why did they always make us read such Oh, it's a pressing book.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: I was probably mad about whatever it was that I was writing
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: Were you like doing any sort of creative writing at that time?
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: Or were you not pursuing writing as a career then?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you knew you were in 10th grade, but was that like a hobby at all?
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's so crazy.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking about this because people will ask, you know, because some people have been writing their whole life and thinking is going to be a saying,
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: and it wasn't for me except I did find really old writing from when I was like eight and nine in like elementary school and in the about the author like they had a student about the author and I wrote that I wanted to be an author when I grew up.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh wow then that dream like died somewhere in 10th grade probably when I was writing these essays and so no I wasn't doing any creative writing at that time and it really wasn't I don't know at least in my school it wasn't
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was not doing it on my own and I didn't start doing it again until I was like a full grown like 30-year-old person.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: What brought you to it then?
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I was staying home with my kids.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: They were real little at the time.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I just needed something that wasn't about toddlers.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that was so fair.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that wasn't, you know, Paw Patrol or whatever.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: Good show, but you know, yes, I need a something different and so I kind of just started doing it on a whim like I always have been a reader, I was like reading and I kind of just started to see if I could do it and then I was like, oh, this is pretty fun.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: I can tell myself little stories like while the kids are napping and I can I've like something else to think about.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: during the day was just nice.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like I was plotting a book instead of like worrying about how much sugar my children were consuming or whatever, like worry of the day was happening.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: And so it was a nice escape for me.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: So that's kind of how it started.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: And then I got, you know, a little braver and started like showing it to other people.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: That's scary.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: That's the scariest part.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, a few select folks got the first three things and then I got.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: Little baby, little baby, little baby, did a little like cell publishing, things like that, and just kept going with it until we ended up here.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: And here we are, with Book 6.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: Can I tell you, speaking of Paw Patrol, I like absolutely wasn't going to say this, I didn't expect Paw Patrol to come up at any point in this interview.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: But whenever the mayor comes up in the Daisy Train flower shop, I can only imagine the mayor.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's really bad because I'm staying with my niece and nephew who are almost five and almost three.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's very topical.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: And so like when we talk about the mayor like in our house, we're talking about the mayor from Paw Patrol.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so when the mayor came up in this book, I was like, I wish so badly I can imagine any one else.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like I was trying to like insert Taylor Docie into this like someone that was another mayor.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: any any other mayor and I just couldn't.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so sorry that that's like what my brain is doing, but I get it.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: The mayor.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: I get it.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Those are the role characters they get in there.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: They get in there, you know, for some reason.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: I love that so much though.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: But speaking of the day-to-day conversation, something that it explores that I really loved was the history of the shop.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so my question for you is if you could leave a note for future you to read while she's writing, what would you say to her?
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, future me?
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, this is okay.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: You flipped it because I've gotten the question of what would you say to past you?
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I always say I would not tell her anything because I don't want to mess it up.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: Because like I like where I landed, I don't want to like mess up that timeline.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know!
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: Time travel plotlines are so tricky.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: I can't stop, did so.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, there's no time travel.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: You will find it one day.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: I will, yes, that's right.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: Future will happen.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, don't know me.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I just like, because I do have like a journal where I, you know, keep track of all these things.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: It is nice to like look back.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: I have one of those five-year journals.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know these where I like?
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: You write like the same day like every year for five years and so you can always see back so I love like looking back like I'll say to my husband I'm like two years ago today we were doing like whatever like it's just fun to see like what you were doing so I guess I would just like to like let my future self know like what life was like right now right this minute for me
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: maybe there's something that she's going through and you're like, you can write, you are good at this and you're hard writing days.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: There are days where you do feel like you know what you're doing, even though they're not every single day.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: So you talked about being a book lover, a big reader and that's what led you to writing.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: With Rory, we see her in her teens and her 20s and her 30s.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you could pick a book that would define your teens, 20s, and 30s, whether it was books that you read at that time, or books like in retrospect that you would apply to that time period, you can go either way with that.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_00]: But what books would you pick?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: What three?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: I would say for my teens, I just stinkly remember, so I read the handmaids tale for the first time when I was in my teens.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: I just like the first book that I was like,
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: like it like just rocked my whole like world view changed just how I saw things how I thought about the world's and it's one of the few books I've read because I'm not a huge reader but that one that will need it a reread.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: I had to really absorb it.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll say that one for my teens.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, what on earth was I doing in my 20s?
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: I read the Hunger Games in my 20s.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's another one.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's just so much you just remember where you were and why you were doing.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like it sat in your soul differently.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like I remember reading that one.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: I was working in like a preschool.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's like not at all like happiness is life, but I was like wanting to wear my hair and like a braid and like,
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: You're bad.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was influencing you.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: You were kind of going into battle every day.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was with this very small people and then for my 30s I will say the hating game for Sally Thorne because that was like my gateway into romance.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: which has been influential for this whole thing.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: But that was kind of the first modern romance that I read, that wasn't those kind of older, Fabio covered romances.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh, this is what romances now.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this is what we're doing.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: I like this.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: To that was kind of like my gateway into this whole world.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I loved it, and I still love it.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, do you like the adaptation of that one?
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: I thought the adabusion was great.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I love Lucy Hale.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, too.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, I was just asked who I would cast as Daisy, and I said, I would cast Lucy Hale.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: Don't think she would be a thing.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, especially after seeing the renderings of like the character illustrations that you have, I was like, that could be Lucy Hale.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: The other person that I was like kind of like a mix between Lucy Hale and like Gracie Abrams was kind of like, yeah, mixing in my mind.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: They're a little shorty, dark hair.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: So speaking to Rory and her love of books, Rory loves books, Lorelie is a coffee addict.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: What is something that you and your friends?
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: Or you, your family and your friends would know you for in the same way.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: I would never said no to a cookie, like at any kind of cookie we need to, I mean, that would be crazy.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: And like pasta and any form, like if we don't eat pasta at least once a week, I start to get like withdrawal symptoms.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's like really bad.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: What's your favorite kind?
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, it depends on the sauce, but I do like I love like a rigotoni or like a rotini in the spirals.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: I just really grip the sauce nicely.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I knew you had a preference.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I could go on.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: We could talk about positive hours.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my pasta podcast, I'll bring you back on that one.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but speaking of Gilmore girls and Lori Gilmore, some of our listeners and some of your readers might be surprised to hear that you write under a pen name and I do want to tell our listeners that I did ask you if we could talk about those and you're totally fine to talk about it.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: I know a lot of people get really
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: and see when it comes to revealing things like that.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: So I did want to confirm for the listeners that we were talking about this with approval, but your best-selling series is written under the name Lori Gilmore.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: What made you want to publish with a pin name and why Lori Gilmore?
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but also, at the time, I was also writing under my given name, my birth name, if you will, which is Melissa.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: which is how I found you actually.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: I got your fantasy novel in a maybe it was fairy loot.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: It was from his fairy loot boxes.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't know until maybe like six months ago that y'all were the same person.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Because I was like, I've read you like long before I learned that you were Lori Gilmore.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, oh my god.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Gosh, that's the same person.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: I had to like go back on my shelf.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, that's most up.
- 16:26[UNKNOWN]: You're a young.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that was me.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: That was a household started.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: That book was like my first traditionally published book.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it was a curse of a lot of wolves and it was under.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: Most of me turned in and it was more like pair normal fantasy-ish vibes.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: So then when we were like going to do a small town series, the kind of wisdom at the time was like, well, it's a different sub-jonger.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: So like, let's put it under a different name.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then we thought, because it was small town cozy and like, what is the quintessential small town?
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: It starts hollow.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: So we're like, let's give that little nod to readers of like, that's what you're going to get in these boxes like that same kind of feel.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: So Lori Gilmore was born.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: Can I tell you the amount of times that when we're on the podcast and I use the name Lori, because I'm like mixing all of their names up into one.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: That when I like heard the name Lori come, I was like, that's so perfect.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like, honestly, I'm accidentally saying it anyway.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: It just comes out anyway.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: So might as well.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: be the name.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I do like what it leaves like in terms of like the expectation for the reader of like where you're headed and like the dental nod to it which I love.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: But speaking of Gilmar girls, when did you first watch Gilmar girls and what is your relationship to the show?
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I watched it fresh out of the gate back a little tense grade me.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: So you were watching it like on the WB, like I, yes, network television with commercials and the whole deal like back in my day, old and mine.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I'd have to need to wait weekly.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we had to wait for episodes that was still been into working.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that's why I was watching it just as they were coming out.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember loving it at the time, loving the town, loving all the quirky weirdos.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: The town meetings were always my favorite part.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: Hence, why dream harbor, always has a town meeting and pretty much every book.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: So that's all the parts that really stuck with me.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: I was saying I don't really reread out some not a huge rewatcher so I feel like I probably over this I can't believe it's 25 years.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure I've rewatched at some point.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: But like at this point now it's been a while and then once I started writing this series I kind of like don't let myself rewatch it now because I'm like I don't actually want it too fresh.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want dream harbour to actually turn into Gilmore Girls fan.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because it's not really what it was meant to be.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: I want the vibes, but I don't want to like go full to someone too.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I guess I'm going to have to wait a while to like can fully rewatch it again, but Yeah, so I'm working on that.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm working on vibes and memories and just feelings that I had when I watched it.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember like finding it and why you decided to start watching it when you were in 10th grade?
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: It was different.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's, you know, the fact that I like centered around a mother and daughter I feel like it was kind of different.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: And just that they were these two really like smart, fast-talking women.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like I did rewatch the Daisy episode last night.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like, we're reminded.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh yeah, they were just like so quick and just that like wittyness between the two of them.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think just felt different at the time.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, all their fun, like, love interest coming in and out, like, I almost forgot, and then I was like, rewashing and saying, yes, it did have it's comforting, but also did have like the drama.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like it had, though, you know, oh, my gosh, who's gonna end up with who and what's gonna happen, which.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: is just fun.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, that was so much of like what it was hard at the time to like define it, which like now we have like no trouble defining where comedy, drama, all fits like we call the bear comedy now.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: But at the time it was like so hard to define what box it was going in because it was a drama.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like the most dramatic things were happening, but they were like punching you with jokes in the middle of it.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: It was quite hard to find where it fit, but I think that
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: happy the whole time.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, that can't work.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: Someone has to be sad.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's when I started raising the Daisy chain flower shop, immediately I was like, the cover is giving happy.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: And as I was going through these characters, I was like, where are you going to turn sad?
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: And they were sad.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_00]: They were already sad.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: They were sad really, really the moment that we met both of them.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, perfect.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: You're both sad.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_00]: I love this.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we need it.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: We need the full range, otherwise it's like not satisfying when you get to that happy ending.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like we all know we're gonna get there, but if it's like rainbows and sunshine the whole time, it's like hooking.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: So we didn't go through anything.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I've been like recommended books and people like, oh my gosh, this is just like stars hall.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: This is just like, go more girls than I go through it.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: And like nothing really happened to them.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, sorry, no one fought.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't, go more girls.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: No one yelled in the street.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: I can't do it.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: You want more girls to add the drama?
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm watching it.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_01]: Let's say that's like, yes, this is why we've got all this tension like yeah, exactly.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I did want to bring you speaking about the Daisy episode love Daisy's intributors.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to bring you on the podcast to talk about Daisy's.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, you have the Daisy Jane flower shop, but just recently it was the 25th anniversary of the episode love Daisy's intributors.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_00]: And we as of this episode airing yesterday, we would have done a scene analysis where we're breaking it down line by line analyzing the scene and talking about the daisies and seeing what happened even our merch as I was telling you this month is daisy themed.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: So we had to have you come on and talk about the sixth book in the Dream Harbor series, the daisy chain flower shop.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: But before we get into the daisies in the show, let's talk about your daisy.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: So for anyone who has not read a dream harbour book, especially for Gilmourkel's fans, what might they love about this series?
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I will just say first of all, if you haven't read the series, you can jump into any book, which I just feel like you're going to pour it.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to start at the beginning, because me as a reader, if I'm told, oh, it's a six-book series, but you have to start at the beginning, like, uh, I can't, that's so much work.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: So that was a more interesting thing.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: So you can jump in right here with Daisy if you'd
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, each book centers are out of different couples, so we've got the romance, like we're saying with Gilmore Girls out of it for me, it was like the funnest part, it was like, we're like an end up with, so we've got that, we do have, you know, there's always some drama, some will they will day with Daisy, it's like a fake dating, which did anyone fake, do you know Gilmore Girls?
- 22:49[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't, but they should have.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: I will say there was one scene where Laura like pretended to be with Luke to get out of a guy that Suki was trying to set her up with.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I will say that there was very briefly, but that was it.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so it's got to be dating.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: They do start off quite sad and heartbroken.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: So if you do like some sad, sad character energy, we've got that for you and Daisy.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, we've got all like plenty of quirky town weirdos floating around the background.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: They're the ones that have decided that Daisy is cursed.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: The Mayor from Paw Patrol has decided.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_01]: The Mayor Paw Patrol has dreams.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: And how to dream that there was a dark cloud over the flower shop.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so now everyone thinks that Daisy is cursed.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: That her like bad luck with love is rubbing off on the rest of the town, which is problem.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: It is a problem, but we have someone who's going to solve it for us.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: Before we get into it, when we saw Amy Shermeldo on a red carpet, and we asked her why she thought Gilmore Girls had been around for this long, and she said it's because it's about family.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: Can you sum up that dream harbor and like kind of what it means to you in that same way?
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: Game Harbor got a lot of found family, so I feel like everyone that comes into town kind of gets absorbed into the town and everyone is very concerned about everyone else for better or worse.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like in this book, Elliot, who's our hero, is very, he's lonely in the beginning.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's lonely inside.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: And he really doesn't have that connection with other people.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a daysy that kind of brings him into the town.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: And he really becomes a part of everything.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: So that's definitely in all of the books this feeling of like found family and like friends that become family.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I love books that have found family because I think that in different to TV, then to books, I feel like we just like feel more deeply about it just because we're in their head.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_00]: And so sometimes when they make a little found family, I'm like,
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm here too.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: You don't know anything about me, but I know everything about you.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm in it.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm here.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that there's something about that in a book that just feels so different than it does on a TV show because you're watching this play out and you start to adore them.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like you feel so much more connected to them in a book which I, that's one of my favorite tropes, if you will, is found family.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: But also, I do like that we see the Daisy chain, if you will, of Daisy's, of like,
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: this generation of daisies, which very much feels like the chain of lore lies or lie the first second and third, and maybe the fourth given the revival, if we're to believe that Rory gave birth to a lore lie.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_00]: I love the way that that all unfold, especially with daisy, who is the main character of course, from a long line of daisies.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: What is something that you think that she is excellent at and something that she needs to work at, to give our listeners a sense of who she is?
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's good at standing up for herself.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: So even though the town has decided that she is cursed, you know, she's still shown up to the town meetings, she's still telling everyone that they're being insane and that there is an occurs.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: So she's, you know, she's fighting for herself, fighting for her business, she's fighting to keep it all together, which is something that like attracts Elliot in the beginning too.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: But then I think she's presenting all that on the outside, but then the inside.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: She really isn't hurt by all of this and, you know, she doesn't feel like she deserves love.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like she thinks she's failed at it.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what she has to work on.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: And like that's quite hard to like have a whole town be like, you know what, I had a dream that you were cursed and so you are.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: I will think as feel bad about it.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_00]: He does feel quite bad about it.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: But it's too late.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: They've run with it.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's too.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like you can't you can't give information to these busy bodies like that and just like retract it.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: and then just pretend it didn't happen.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's not possible.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: But if you are interested in a curse, there is a lot more to it than we just see with the mayor.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: I will say, I will leave it at that because I thought that's where we were headed with that.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was just all a dream, but there's a lot more to be discovered about the curse itself and how it relates to a daisy.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_00]: Similarly, for Elliot, the divorced architect, who's just, he's quite sad, and he's quite lonely, restoring that in town, what is something that makes him a great partner for Daisy and what is something that makes him a perfect foil for her.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see, what makes him a good partner for Daisy?
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think, I mean, the whole book is just him showing her that she does deserve love, like he's so smitten.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's just there for her.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think in Lisa, like her exes were like, weren't there for her, he's just very supportive and just listens to her, you know, it's all we want.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: really.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_00]: He really shows up for her.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like he like immediately like you talked about her exes.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think that there's something about someone who just sees how to naturally love you like in like their day-to-day life.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's just so easy for him.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: That like her exes made her feel like maybe it was hard to do so.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, what do you mean?
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: This is so easy.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: I love you immediately.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: I love you day one.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: I just can't tell you it's exactly exactly and he like he goes out of his comfort zone to help her.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: So like you know he needs typically shy he doesn't put himself in the middle center of attention and he basically finds himself having a perform in front of the whole town this fake relationship.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: He's he performing or I mean, you know, but he doesn't have to do it in a bigger way Maybe then he would match a lot Absolutely, and what was the other happen that?
- 28:37[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I was like makes him a green whale.
- 28:39[UNKNOWN]: I think
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: him and Daisy are similar in a lot of ways when they start out because they are both kind of in this like low heartbroken place but he's kind of more like I said like Daisy's out there and kind of like fight the town and Ellie it's kind of more like introspective and just more like yeah like like let's figure it out between us like we don't need to you know we don't need to fight the whole town
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I feel like he's a lot more introspective, like he's a lot quieter.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_00]: He suffers internally a lot more, but he deserves it easy.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: But when I realized that they were both divorced in this, I was like, that's such a such an interesting way to bring these two characters together, like with the same wound and very different ways.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: I really liked that part of it.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_00]: But like noting that like all of these different books have very different characters, very different things going on.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: What were you thematically most excited to explore with this book?
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: Because like I said, it has a very cute cover, but it packs a bit of an emotional punch.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: What were you most excited to play with in this one?
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: We're getting more emotional as the series goes on.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe, I think.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_01]: Now that you say that, I'm like, yeah, we're getting in there.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the first one was pretty lie.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: It was pretty classic city girl comes.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: So this small town needs the flannel wearing man.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're keeping it, keeping it pretty basic.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, as we're getting into it, we're getting into our feelings.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is the first time I think that both characters are starting in
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, is that if doing grumpy sunshine I just did like sad sad sad.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: I was gonna say when I was like trying to like Class fight these characters.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, it's not like sunshine sunshine.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's like it's sad sad.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's exactly Thought I was like, I can't say that to her.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: She wrote sad sad.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_00]: I did I did I will admit it.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_00]: I wrote sad sad lonely lonely lonely lonely girl lonely boy
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, they're just lonely hearts and I don't know something about seeing the cover because I do get to see the covers often Like before the book is done and I knew her date in her name was Daisy.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: I knew the cover was going to be like so sun-trying and and happy For some reason in my brain that triggered like well, obviously she only wears black and obviously she's that like I was like I have to go Like I'm confused.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: You're like of course.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: She's never worn color in her life
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's beautiful.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she works in this like kaleidoscope flower shop, but she only wears black and she's sad.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I went opposite.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_01]: And then I just for fade dating, I feel like, okay, so they're pretending to date, but they have to have like a pretty solid reason for not actually just dating, because like then the whole time where he's asking yourself, like, well, why don't they just date for a real?
- 31:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I wanted them to, they really needed to be sufficiently broken in the beginning because it really takes them a long time to decide like, okay, actually, I can be in a relationship.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I think they kind of go from fake dating to kind of friends to lovers because they, like, become friends during this fake relationship.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: There's one, and it's not a spoiler, but there's like one part when she is kind of a void enough of him and finally confronts him about it.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: And she's like, that's not how I would treat my friend because we're friends, right?
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, yeah, we're friends.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, okay, we're switching it up.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: Fake dating, and now we're friends, and now we're going to become lovers.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: I like that there's kind of like that demarcation in the book of like a little bit of a shift, because in real life, fake dating doesn't make sense to me.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like unless it's like a PR relationship, like there's a book by AvaWouder called How to Fake In Hollywood.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_00]: And they get set up by like actually by their teams and they're having a fake relationship which I'm like totally, I believe that.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_00]: But like thinking if like my friend was like, yeah, I'm pretending to date this guy, I'm like,
- 32:22[SPEAKER_00]: what why like what what's going on like like why why is this happened like what is secured here I just don't understand but like when i'm in a book i'm like but that makes so much sense you have to fake date you can't tell anyone like and you can't date for real because you're too broken like that just doesn't
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's insane.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I keep saying, it's so fun in books and movies, but it will least realistic trope, I will say, I think.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's in who it does this?
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: Has anyone done this in their real life?
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: Would please write in, tell me, like, I'm dying to know any one of them will ever pay data.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's why like maybe it's one of my favorite like book tropes is because like it just doesn't make sense in real Unless it's like the like the Hollywood version.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's like the only book that I'm like, okay, that I get that that makes sense That one could have been probably has happened many times like when I found out that Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson they weren't actually together.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_00]: It was just PR for their movie
- 33:16[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh my gosh, I forgot that we'd really like, I really liked that pairing but we got played.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: Fake dating.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: So in real life it's not so great but in books do you have a book that like that you really loved fake dating in that like maybe in real life you're like, but in this book it was it was needed.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_01]: My favorite movie with fake dating is the proposal with Santa Roll at home.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: I love when they're like both out of the shed they're like naked and they like crash a new each other in the room.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, I forget about it.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: And like Betty White and that's so perfect.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_00]: What a treasure.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_01]: What's the thingy-be making blanket?
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like you have to put them there like get this off the bed.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: Get it away.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect, perfect example.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: So when it comes to like these small businesses that you're making do you do a lot of research Like did you do a lot of flour research when it came to this book to see kind of like how to fill out the shop?
- 34:15[SPEAKER_01]: I keep saying that I Accidentally like have now had to learn how to like keep small businesses afloat.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like I got like how this happened to me like I Not a small business owner.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a small business consultant at this point
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: like at this point I'm like I've got a cabinet going I got a bookstore so in this book Elliot proposes something but unlike Max Medina he does not propose marriage he proposes fake dating to combat the rumor of course that the flower shop is cursed when it comes to like it feels like it comes to love specifically like no one's doing their weddings with Daisy anymore was there anything in this writing process for this book that felt cursed for you that was like really hard to get right or something that just kept going wrong as you went through it or was
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: There's always the days that feel cursed.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will say fruit.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: So for some characters like if they've been in the background of the other books a lot, so like book five, those characters had been through the whole series pretty like upfront side characters.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: So by the time I got to their book, it was like it just fell out.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like I knew everything about them easy busy.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: This one, Daisy and Elliot are fairly new to town.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like we get a little of them in book five, but like not a lot.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I was really having to learn about them.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I did have to do a lot of figuring out of just like who the heck are these two.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: talking about Elliot and Daisy are both divorced.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: Though this love was right for them, the previous ones they thought were, but were not an ultimately hidden heartbreak.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: So stepping into that idea and Gilmore girls, Max of course proposes to lower a lie first in the middle of a fight, and then with a thousand-year-old Daisy's.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: But with that caveat, it's that lower-lie proposed
- 35:57[SPEAKER_00]: this idea of like a proposal should have a thousand LEDs used.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: How do you feel about like the proposal being in the middle of a fight?
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: And then ultimately it was her idea that he executed.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: Huh, when he proposed the middle of a fight, I like all thebly grown to like I was, oh my god, I was like, oh god, like this is not no option.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just what he says.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: Don't do this.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: What does it happen?
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: What is it happening?
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: I guys the side myself, but I will say side know I do love it when and I love you Comes out in the middle of the fight like when they're fighting like put like Rory when she's like I love you You idiot or whatever.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: I was like that at light that I'm okay with so I'll just say side No, but the proposal no that I did not I was like no, this is not okay
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think it's okay to say what you'd like in a proposal.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: I did give my husband a bit of an outlight.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, there was more of like, don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please don't please
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: but then for him to actually make that happen for you and for you to see it, especially with the tens of hundreds of thousands of yellow daisies that actually ended up in that scene.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_00]: That was not it.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: They can't, they cannot count.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: They lost count.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm like, oh, that's quite romantic.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: Because I had this idea and then he made it possible for me to see it.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: But it was in the middle of the fight that he had proposed.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, there's only one option.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's for us to get married.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: What is same thing to say?
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: What an insane thing to say.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_00]: Why would that be the only option?
- 37:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's either break up or get married.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, ultimately, that's what they'll do.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: They'll either break up with their get married.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: But right now, it seems like we're in the middle of problem-solving mode.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: And that doesn't seem like what the solution is.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_01]: Especially because the fight warb about that they keep doing this pattern.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they keep cycling through this ups and downs and breaks up.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: Breakups and I'm like, does he think like, well, if we get married, then it's just locked in and we're good to go.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: All of that disappears.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but when it comes to max, did you, did you like max or did you have any ill feeling towards him?
- 38:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think I was just like all and on Luke from day one and I will just say like I learned something about myself in this episode, right?
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: Because okay, here's a way learned.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, okay, Max, Grace, got all these flowers.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_01]: I like, wasn't it loud?
- 38:46[SPEAKER_01]: Luke, with his toolbox show, you know what I mean?
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: Fixing shit?
- 38:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yes, that's what I want.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_01]: We love those acts of surface.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was thinking, I was like, I clearly, this imprinted on me because like every man in Dream Harbor fixes things, lifts heavy things, like, look, they're whole purpose.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they're just, then he left the toolbox there.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like, him and Max get in that little, and then he just leaves the, I was like,
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, might you have a reason to come back.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's like that left a bigger like impact on me than the daisies.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: Ooh, okay.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I mean is like it's such a beautiful facade.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's such a beautiful image.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like can he back it up, can Max really?
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: At the end of that, having like just freshly watched that episode, knowing that she says yes and that leaves.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like she just gets up like at the end of one episode she decides that she wants to leave because she didn't want to try on her wedding dress Which is something that Emily said that like leading up to her wedding She also wanted to do was try on her wedding dress and so more like decides she didn't want to and so she just gets up and leaves in the middle of the night After the end of that episode that you watched, did you like it feel that coming or were you like no, she should say yes to this guy
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: No, I felt like I think if it's not an immediate yes, then it's a no, even in real life.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_00]: No, like especially, I feel like you would have talked about it before.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what am I supposed to mean?
- 40:10[SPEAKER_01]: Weirding.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: It was just like a formality.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_01]: It was like thanks for the rain.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like, weirding it was happened.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't in the surprise.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the day he did it was a surprise, but it wasn't like, oh my god, like you're
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, it was like, great, sweet.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for the jewelry and like, let's start planning.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna wear it forever for the whole life.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like I just, I can't imagine being surprised and I can't imagine being like not an immediate yes.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: So the fact that she didn't say yes right away, I was like, well, this is doomed.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is a demo from the start.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's also quite fascinating because, thematically, there's a pattern in Gilmore Girls, where all of the proposals take place during a fight.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like, they all, the result of a fight or happening in a fight between the two characters, which getting into the psyche of the Paladino's on that is a for a whole other episode.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_00]: We want to go beyond what is going on there.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_00]: But, I just feel like that's so, so interesting to approach proposals like that.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that is interesting.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I just don't think much like a baby doesn't save a marriage, like a proposal isn't going to save a relationship.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think unless the boys thought it was like specifically about, but no, I know.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_00]: I just, not during a fight.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I can't understand what the fight would be about in such a way that it's like productive to the relationship.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like now you're going to be together forever and now you have to problem software ever because that's famously romanticly that's what marriage is problem solving forever but like it seems like if it is the problem that we're solving right I don't say you're just like I know I know how to fix this like let's just get married the one option
- 41:45[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, and I have like I have like such mixed feelings about it because I always feel like Max kind of gives me the egg There's just something about him that like I can't quite get on board with that I've never been able to articulate in the way that you can't quite articulate Why someone gives you the egg?
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: I always wanted her to move on from him and she did
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thank goodness.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean the flowers were pretty but everything else nothing.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, in that vein do you have a team for worry that you remembered like was there one that when you were in high school that like resonated with you and like has stayed with you?
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I think Jess, I don't know what it is, but there is something about authors who write small towns, who they always are team Jess, every single time, like love that bad boy that rolls in town, like he's new there, he's like out of place, but there's something about her like.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's only her, and he likes to read everybody else book.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's like something about authors that like, especially like, you write small town, B.K.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_00]: Borsan writes small town, Hannah Bonham Young writes small town, all team Jess.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's so rare that I find an author.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like, even in general, like, it's a rare that I find an author that's not team Jess.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, first of all, I'm team Logan, but like, that's either here and we're there.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's a fascinating study though, no, I'm like, oh, that's so interesting.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: I know, and I really do think it comes down to like, he's the bad boy who reads, and like that is really appealing to like, introverted people, or like, not all authors are introverted, but like most of them spend a lot of time alone writing their books, and so it's like having one person who is fascinated by you.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a book in his back pocket.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like, book.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to book in another jacket.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and it's like super hard not to be team just because it's my love and to me.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like it's what we're resupposed to do when he wrote a sentence.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think he both know other options.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: They're really like, get out of your Dean, Adios, just as a ride.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: You were mentioning that you like having to look up like why they broke up.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jess.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I thought it was like, oh, yes, that tracks.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I couldn't remember.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, why did Tina and Rory break up?
- 43:51[SPEAKER_00]: And then I was like, yep, that makes perfect sense.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then he cheated with his wife.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_01]: So like, it, oh my god, I was going down the whole rabbit hole last night.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: When I was trying to remember all this, it was all coming back to me.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: And me about, my husband's saying next to me, he's like, remember all of it.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, oh, yeah, I was like, what is happening?
- 44:07[SPEAKER_01]: When did he watch it?
- 44:08[SPEAKER_01]: Did he watch it growing up?
- 44:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think so.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think he had a thing for a Lauren Graham.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's hard not to.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just what a beauty.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what's not to love there But I love that.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: I what are my favorite things is like couples watching go more girls together It's fun for everyone love that so much.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_00]: You were saying though that like you kind of gave your husband an outline for your own proposal What did that look like?
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, I mean it's like down PowerPoint
- 44:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're the presentation night, I don't do that.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: No, it was really just like, Joel, I did not want it in public.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't work.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: No, like, jumbo tron at the, what up, like, none at none of that.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: So people love that.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_01]: God bless, but not for me.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was like don't know that.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I mean, this kind of funny considering I write romance, but like a lot of like mushy words make me feel very embarrassed and square me inside.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, ladies don't like recite something like poetry or anything.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like to help me too much.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know I'm the light of your life.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to say it.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_01]: But just like summarize, like don't go too deep in.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was thinking about it after this episode and I was like, oh, it really was like a whole acts of service proposal because like he picked me up from the train so I didn't have to walk home.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then like he had clean the apartment and like he had made dinner and he had like bought flowers in the ring.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: And then it was like we're engaged.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: Were they daisies?
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: They were white hydrangeas.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, beautiful.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was really lovely.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: I need to say anything, machine.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_01]: We're good.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: We're getting married.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_00]: I love.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: So we had last September.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: We had Sangu Mandana.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_00]: The author of a Witches Guide to Magical in keeping on.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_00]: And we asked her what book she would recommend for Gilmore Girls fans.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: and she recommended your books.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: So now I want to ask you, what is a book you would recommend for Gilmore Girls fans?
- 46:05[SPEAKER_01]: Will you just mention Hannah Bowen?
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: Young, and I'm ready to go on a push right now.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I love her.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like, I mean, this one's so good already.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_01]: I just started it, but...
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I feel like she does those emotions so well, like I'm already like feeling emotional reading.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's one.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_01]: And like I just was like out of the woods.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a marriage and trouble, which like already were emotional, right?
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like right from the jump, but it's also funny.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like you were saying, you were just like, you were dealing with like all these like really intense feelings, but then like I'm cracking up because she's talking about like being afraid of getting
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: that I'm just like, oh no, relatable, you know, I am also afraid of that.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's a perfect title out of the woods.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get out of the woods.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_01]: Get out of there, girl.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like, danger.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll see her.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, her books, they have that.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: They have that, like, emotional range that, like, all the fields and
- 47:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, perfect.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I know that one, I don't remember which one of it it is, but one of her books has a dedication to Team Jess.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_00]: There we go.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_00]: She's done.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_00]: For you.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to read a book that also has the charm of stars hollow with a dash of spice, pick up the Daisy Chain flower shop this week.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: But lastly, Lloyd, what is next for you?
- 47:24[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, well, I mean, we can circle back.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_01]: We were talking about my pen name and that first wear wolf book.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm re-branded it.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: We're bringing it under the Lori Gilmore umbrella.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: So in September, it's coming back out as the big bed wolf.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: has a new cover.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_01]: And if you've read it, if you read it in its first iteration, the plot points are the same, but I've given it the Loregiel more treatment.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: So you have like a new town to come visit.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_01]: So maple hollow.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like a little spooky here in the dream harbor, a little weirder, a little, um, I mean there's more wolves.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: Spoiler alert.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_00]: No wearables and dream harbor.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_01]: Dream harbor.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_01]: All the time.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_00]: We know of that.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: We know of that one's revealed themselves.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: Never know you never know, but that's kind of what's next.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: So we, yeah, we're re releasing that one.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_01]: We just wanted like more readers to be able to find it basically combined my personalities.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then book two will follow shortly after.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_01]: So if you've read the first one in the original form, you can skip to book two if you don't feel like reading it again.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_01]: Or if you want to see kind of what the town is like, you can you can reread it.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, do you have book two or are you, is that what you're working on now?
- 48:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, coming very soon, I believe.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_01]: I just saw the like final cover and it's like so pretty.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, and they'll be three in that one total.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, oh, okay.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_00]: Exciting.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: So much more Lori, don't want it to look forward to.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, thank you so much for joining me and my listeners today.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_00]: I know that they are going to love this as much as I did.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully pick up the D.C. chain flower shop and then visit all of the other small businesses you've created along the way.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: So many entrepreneurs.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, my friend.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'd book loving besties.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much for joining me for another episode of Gilmour to Read.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you'd like to join the book club conversation, head over to Patreon where you can join for free.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: In May, we're still reading Crying in Hmart by Michelle Zoner with where you read I can follow a book club, and my next guest will be Lynn Painter.
