- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter eighteen Impurity. Thou art now like a sere leaf.
- 0:09Speaker 1: The messengers of death Yama have come near to thee.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Thou standest at the door of thy departure, and thou
- 0:18Speaker 1: hast no provision for thy journey. Make thyself an island.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Work hard, be wise. When thy impurities are blown away,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and thou art free from guilt, thou wilt enter into
- 0:35Speaker 1: the heavenly world of thee elect Riya. Thy life has
- 0:42Speaker 1: come to an end. Thou art come near to death Yama.
- 0:48Speaker 1: There is no resting place for THEE on the road,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and thou hast no provision for thy journey. Make thyself
- 0:57Speaker 1: an island. Work hard, be wise. When thy impurities are
- 1:03Speaker 1: blown away, and thou art free from guilt, thou wilt
- 1:08Speaker 1: not enter again into birth and decay. Let a wise
- 1:14Speaker 1: man blow off the impurities of his self, as a
- 1:19Speaker 1: smith blows off the impurities of silver, one by one,
- 1:24Speaker 1: little by little, and from time to time, as the
- 1:30Speaker 1: impurity which springs from the iron, when it springs from
- 1:35Speaker 1: it destroys it. Thus do a transgressor's own works lead
- 1:41Speaker 1: him to the evil path. The taint of prayers is
- 1:46Speaker 1: non repetition. The taint of houses non repair. The taint
- 1:53Speaker 1: of the body is sloth, the taint of a watchman, thoughtlessness,
- 2:00Speaker 1: bad conduct is the taint of woman, greediness the taint
- 2:05Speaker 1: of a benefactor. Tainted are all evil ways in this
- 2:11Speaker 1: world and in the next. But there is a taint
- 2:15Speaker 1: worse than all taints. Ignorance is the greatest taint. Oh mendicants,
- 2:23Speaker 1: throw off that taint and become taintless. Life is easy
- 2:30Speaker 1: to live for a man who is without shame, a
- 2:33Speaker 1: crow hero, a mischief maker, an insulting, bold and wretched fellow.
- 2:41Speaker 1: But life is hard to live for a modest man
- 2:45Speaker 1: who always looks for what is pure, who is disinterested, quiet, spotless,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and intelligent. He who destroys life, who speaks truth, who
- 3:01Speaker 1: in this world takes what is not given him, who
- 3:05Speaker 1: goes to another man's wife, And the man who gives
- 3:10Speaker 1: himself to drinking intoxicating liquors, He, even in this world,
- 3:17Speaker 1: digs up his own root. O man, know this that
- 3:25Speaker 1: the unrestrained are in a bad state. Take care that
- 3:30Speaker 1: greediness and vice do not bring thee to grief. For
- 3:34Speaker 1: a long time, the world gives according to their faith
- 3:40Speaker 1: or according to their pleasure. If a man frets about
- 3:44Speaker 1: the food and the drink given to others, he will
- 3:48Speaker 1: find no rest, either by day or by night. He
- 3:54Speaker 1: in whom that feeling is destroyed and taken out with
- 3:57Speaker 1: the very root, finds rapt by day and by night.
- 4:04Speaker 1: There is no fire like passion. There is no shark
- 4:08Speaker 1: like hatred. There is no snare like folly. There is
- 4:13Speaker 1: no torrent like greed. The fault of others is easily perceived,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but that of one's self is difficult to perceive. A
- 4:24Speaker 1: man winnows his neighbor's faults like chaff, but his own
- 4:29Speaker 1: fault he hides as a cheat hides the bad dye
- 4:33Speaker 1: from the gambler. If a man looks after the faults
- 4:38Speaker 1: of others and is always inclined to be offended, his
- 4:43Speaker 1: own passions will grow, and he is far from the
- 4:47Speaker 1: destruction of passions. There is no path through the air.
- 4:54Speaker 1: A man is not a somana by outward acts. The
- 4:59Speaker 1: world delights in vanity. The toetogetas the Buddhas are free
- 5:05Speaker 1: from vanity. There is no path through the air. A
- 5:12Speaker 1: man is not a surmona by outward acts. No creatures
- 5:17Speaker 1: are eternal, but the awakened Buddha are never shaken. End
- 5:26Speaker 1: of chapter eighteen.
